Of this, $623,760 is going directly to Ajax-Pickering Hospital. Critics of hospital merger with Lakeridge Health coming to terms with changes; new sign revealed at special ceremony Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com AJAX -- A new sign at the Ajax- Pickering Hospital indicating the facility will maintain its unique identity although becoming a part of Lakeridge Health Network was revealed at a special ceremony on Dec. 9. “The focus is on Ajax-Pickering,” said Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dick- son. The sign, which says ‘Ajax-Pick- ering Hospital’ in large letters, and ‘Lakeridge Health Network’ in small lettering, was revealed a week after the Ajax-Pickering hospital and Lakeridge officially merged. Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Dr. Eric Hoskins ordered in April the break- up of the Rouge Valley Health System and amalgamation of the Centenary site with The Scarborough Hospital, creating a new health corporation in Scarborough. Dr. Hoskins also ordered the Ajax-Pickering hospital to move under the jurisdiction of Lakeridge. The merge officially took place on Dec. 1. The community, including physicians, had shared fears that the merger was real- ly a takeover by Lakeridge. But since the minister announced late last month cer- tain improvements to the hospital, such as the reinstatement of mental health beds in Ajax, and a guarantee that the assets of the Ajax-Pickering Hospital will maintain at the Ajax site, critics have become accept- ing of the changes. “I think we can all be pretty content and happy with the final outcome,” said Dr. Romas Stas , RVHS associate chief of staff and medical director of complex continu- ing care. Dr. Stas was concerned when he learned the Ajax site would simply join Lakeridge, rather than create a new health network in Durham. Other positive changes include adding two more Ajax-based members to the Lak- eridge board of directors for a total of five, and creating a new name for the board of directors, which is still to come. “He was able … to really not get us a new corporation, but basically give us all of the elements we would get in a new corpora- tion,” Dr. Stas said of the minister. Dickson at the event also announced Durham Region hospitals are receiving almost $1.6 million this year in addition- al funding to improve access to care and to reduce the length of hospital stays for patients and families in Durham. Of this, nearly $624,000 is going to Ajax-Pickering Hospital. Dickson has been working with Dr. Hoskins to advocate for an effective plan and increased investment for the Ajax- Pickering hospital that will serve not only Ajax and Pickering, but all of west Durham. “This new investment is a concrete example of our government’s commitment to the community in Ajax-Pickering and the broader west Durham Region,” he said. Copyright © 2016 Advertising Feature How to sell high: avoid these three mistakes when selling your Ajax/Pickering home DuRHAM region - When you decide to sell your home, setting your asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Depending on how a buyer is made aware of your home, price is often the first thing he or she sees, and many homes are discarded by prospective buyers as not being in the appropriate price range before they’re even given a chance of showing. Your asking price is often your home’s “first impression”, and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it’s imperative that you make a good first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds, and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a homeseller as pricing too low. Taking a look at what homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process. and on it’s own is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recent study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled “Homesellers: How to get the price you want(and need)”. This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken together, this information will help you price your home to not only sell, but sell for the price you want. Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM - An Ajax man faces numerous charges after a motorist collided with three other vehicles, including a police cruiser, while fleeing from cops Friday night. No injuries were reported following the incident, which began when an officer attempted to pull over an SUV that was being driven erratically on Taunton Road West at about 8:45 p.m. Dec. 9, Durham police said. The driver of the SUV initially pulled over but then sped away, turning south on Hwy. 412 where it collided with a transport truck and kept going, police said. As the SUV approached the ramp to Hwy. 401, police say the driver intentionally rammed a cruiser, then travelled west on the 401. Police ended the pursuit after the SUV collided with a third vehicle on Salem Road. But they managed to identify the driver, who was arrested as a friend arrived to pick him up near Kingston and Salem Roads. The heavily-damaged SUV was found in a school parking lot nearby. Jonathan Murray, 26 of Gardiner Drive in Ajax, is charged with dangerous driving and driving while under suspension, fail- ing to stop for police, possession of mari- juana and three counts of failing to remain at the scene of an accident. Durham Festive RIDE impaired charges at 75 after four weeks Police seeing similar numbers to last year’s campaign Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- After four weeks, officers conducting Durham's Festive RIDE cam- paign have now charged 75 motorists with drinking and driving offences. Another 16 drivers were charged dur- ing the fourth week of the cam- paign, which saw more than 2,700 vehicles stopped, Dur- ham police said. There were 114 roadside breath tests demanded, and 18 drivers received three-day licence suspen- sions for registering warning blood alcohol levels. The 2016 campaign is seeing similar numbers to last year's; after the fourth week of the 2015 effort, 77 drunk driving charges had been laid. The number of three-day suspensions, 79, is the same as last year's. Publication Sales Agreement #40052657 column our opinion We are lucky to call Durham Region home and have access to such a unique mix of urban and rural communities. Our agricultural base in particular sets us apart from other GTA communities where sometimes it’s easy to for- get there’s another world beyond the sprawl. That’s why I’m so proud that just over three years ago, Durham College brought to life a longtime vision for an agriculture, culinary and hospitality-related post-secondary pres- ence in Durham Region through our Centre for Food. At the core of the vision was a man- date to live field-to-fork and sustainability -- and this has been evident in everything we do. In only a short time, that vision and the work we are doing have been widely recog- nized through a number of awards, and just recently we received one of the most influen- tial endorsements possible. The W. Garfield Weston Foundation announced a partnership with us that resulted in the renaming of our centre to the W. Galen Weston Centre for Food -- the only building in Canada that has been granted the use of Mr. Weston’s name in this manner. Mr. Weston, of course, is a global food industry titan. We are humbled by the trust the Weston family has put in our vision and centre, how- ever we also recognize this trust extends beyond the Westons to our Durham commu- nity. We know that students, the community and industry partners are counting on us to build upon our many early successes and see the CFF grow into a powerhouse of leadership when it comes to bringing together post-sec- ondary education, science, research and ser- vice excellence as it relates to food, agriculture, hospitality and more. Already, we have a full-service restaurant, Bistro ‘67, that is drawing rave reviews, a retail food store open to the public, bountiful gar- dens and agricultural fields, greenhouses, excellent applied research capabilities and much more. The best thing about the Weston Centre? Our students are actively involved in every aspect of its operations. When they are not in the classroom or lab, they are planting or harvesting fresh produce from the fields, preparing and serving in our restaurant, host- ing high-profile events and enhancing the CFF’s landscape through building projects such as the stone pathways and arboretum. How’s that for a living lab? Our students are studying in one of the most unique post-secondary food-related cen- tres in Canada and, in turn, giving back to the community through innovative agri-focused applied research projects, sustainable food production practices, and, fresh, healthy local food. Most importantly, we are meeting the growing demand for a new generation of pro- fessionals. However, we’ve only just begun -- just wait until you see what we have in store in the years ahead. -- Tony Doyle is the associate dean of the Durham College Centre for Food. Centre for Food serving students and Durham well Tony Doyle Guest columnist lETTEr To THE EDiTor Readers encourage donations to Joanne’s House To the editor: As Christmas grows closer, excitement and cheer grow for most but not everyone. In our society today, Christmas is a time for gift giving and for good food, although this stuff is not really important for some of us. People today focus more on giving and receiving gifts than helping out those who cannot afford anything at all. Winter is a very tough time for the home- less in the community, and now is the perfect time to help out the less fortunate. People who are less fortunate than some of us are desperate for some clothes and food to help them get through the cold Canadian winters, so please help and donate your old clothing today! This winter do something different and discover the true meaning of Christmas, put yourself in someone else’s shoes and consider donating to Joanne’s House in Ajax. Katherine Moroz and Stephanie Reed Whitby Letters should be no more than 200 words. We reserve the right to edit for length, libel and community standards. How to submit a letter to the editor: Mail 865 Farewell St., Oshawa, l1H 6N8 EMail newsroom@durhamregion.com FaX 905-579-2238 Just over a year ago it was announced with much fanfare that Ajax was donating land on Harwood Avenue for a new, larger and better Grandview Children’s Centre. “There’s not much more important than our health system and nothing more impor- tant than our children,” Ajax Mayor Steve Par- ish noted then. Grandview is the only facility of its type in Durham to provide various therapies to chil- dren with special needs. Grandview currently is located in Oshawa where it has been for the past 63 years. The current site, with 28,000 square feet of space, was built to handle 400 children. It now helps 5,600 children and 2,600 more are on a waiting list. The new 68,000-square-foot building will cost $44 million. In 2009, Grandview started plans for the much-needed renovations. In the past year Grandview and its support- ers have done their job by keeping the need for a new centre in the forefront while sup- porters have raised $7.5 million of the $10 million they are committed to raising. Grandview staff has visited each Durham municipality to explain the need for a bigger facility. And while Oshawa politicians aren’t thrilled with the move, they understand the need for it. What’s missing from the equation is the go ahead and funds from the provincial govern- ment. Pickering-Scarborough MPP Tracy Mac- Charles says all Durham MPPs are behind the project, so what is the hold up? That Grandview and its families have had to wait for more than one year is unacceptable. While the provincial Liberal government plays around with hydro bills and tries to fig- ure out ways to get the Ontario voters back on their side for the next provincial election in 2018, thousands of parents in Durham are waiting for a much-needed facility to help their kids reach their full potentials. Each day those parents hope for the good news, the day the Province says yes. Each day that passes they are disappointed. Orion Robitaille is a perfect example of what can be achieved when Grandview helps a young child. Orion, five, has autism. Thanks to a variety of therapies, his mobility and speech are getting better but he is not in class- es as much as he should be because of the lack of space which also means a lack of staff. Durham’s three Liberal MPPs, MacCharles, Ajax’s Joe Dickson and Granville Anderson in Clarington must do all they can to push Grandview’s plight with their leader and her cabinet in the new year. We don’t want to wait until a month before the next election to hear funds have been approved for Grandview. Kids such as Orion need the help now. What the words of the honourable min- ister fail so eloquently to convey is the whole truth. The merger of Ajax-Pickering hospital with Lakeridge is no marriage of mutu- al convenience but an appalling shotgun wedding. Instead of a willing bride, Dr. Hoskins will deliver Ajax-Pickering hos- pital to be another voiceless waif in the Lakeridge harem. Once the die is cast, it is irretrievable. The dowry the Right Honourable Dr. Hoskins will deliver to the eager Lak- eridge groom is only the lifeblood of the people who worked so hard to bring these health-care services to west Dur- ham. Speak now, west Durham, or forever hold your peace. There will be no future liberation, no amicable divorce. We learned that lesson with Rouge Valley. It will be business as usual for Lak- eridge and leftovers for west Durham, as usual. But wait. Is that a growing discontent, a nascent ground swell that I hear? The people of West Durham are rebelling! It is the government that is revolting. Brian Densham Ajax Resident hopes Pickering airport never takes flight To the editor: Re: ‘Gary Polonsky did his job on airport lands report’, editorial, Dec. 8 Your editorial regarding Gary Polon- sky’s report on the economic devel- opment of the airport land in north Pickering begins by saying that an air- port “would be a huge economic boon ... and should proceed.” Having grown up in the flight path of Malton and Pearson airports, I’m hop- ing that this never becomes a reality. I frequently ride my bike in this lovely area designated for a future airport and I shudder at the thought of aircraft noise, traffic congestion, hotels, bill boards, fast food joints, gas bars and transport truck terminal parking lots. Years ago I deliberately moved to Dur- ham Region to get away from all of this “progress” that you and most politicians seem to embrace. “They paved paradise ... and put up a parking lot.” Thank you, Joni Mitchell, for these words, but most people aren’t listen- ing. AJAX NISSAN 500 BAYLY STREET WEST,AJAX TEL: (905) 686-0555 Durham raising water, sewer rates Durham looking at a combined 3.6 per cent hike Keith Gilligan KGilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Turning on the tap or flush- ing the toilet is expected to cost you more in 2017. Durham is looking at a combined 3.6 per cent increase for water and sewer users. For a homeowner using 50,500 gal- lons a year (229,577 litres), the increase means an extra $31.72 annually. Water rates are increasing by 4.9 per cent and sewer rates by 2.3 per cent. The water and sanitary sewer systems operate on user fees and not from prop- erty taxes. Finance commissioner Jim Clapp said with decreased water consumption "unfortunately, we have to increase the rates. The main driver of the budget is the increase in capital costs." Speaking to Regional council's com- mittee of the whole on Wednesday, Dec. 7, Clapp noted the water and sewer bills are issued quarterly and the increas- es means water rates would go up by $5.27 and sewer rates by $2.66. Clarington Councillor Joe Neal tried to have the increase cut to two per cent, saying a 3.6 per cent rise "is a little high. "I would suggest it's a reasonable amount to increase," Neal added. He noted the water and sewer operations have an approxi- mately $10 million surplus in 2016. Clapp said the surplus was caused by the dry summer. "Seasonal usage was extremely high. I hate to call it a bonus, but that's what it was." Clapp argued against a two per cent increase, saying, "This is not a yearly snapshot. We're talking about a plan. If you're cutting something here, you're cutting something in the future. Quite frankly, we've cut it back as much as we could, given taxpayer fatigue." "The only reason we had a surplus was because people were watering their lawns," Clapp said of the dry summer season. Committee members turned down Neal's request. Council will vote on the matter at its meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Jim Clapp Me t r o l a n D Du r h a M real estate Press Run 183,750 December 14, 2016 *Independently Owned & Operated EXCLUSIVE! FOCUS ON FAMILY FOCUS ON SENIORS FOCUS ON HEALTH FOCUS ON FOOD & WINE Thinkstock photo DURHAM -- Winter means spending a lot of time indoors, a great opportunity to share quality time in the kitchen with children. Parents can help kids beat the winter blahs BY JAMES MACKINNON, TISH SHEPPARD AND JANE RYAN Recent forecasts are predicting that we are going to have a long and cold win- ter, so with that in mind how do we beat winter boredom and energize our chil- dren? Here are some ideas: Go Outdoors Bundle up in layers and head outside to enjoy a variety of winter activities. Try something new such as: • Go for a walk and look for animal tracks; • Go skating on a pond; • Try snowshoeing; • Go cross-country skiing or downhill skiing; • Make some hot chocolate and go tobogganing; • Help a neighbour shovel snow; • Make coloured snow by putting food colouring and water into a spray bottle; • Go for a nature walk –- take a flash- light and gather pieces of nature that you can use for artwork; or • Build a snow fort with your recycling box or different size containers. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Activities Encourage hands-on learning. Break open your LEGO, straws, toothpicks, blocks and/or Popsicle sticks and build structures. • Build a bridge out of Popsicle sticks; • Make a volcano; • Build a tower with a deck of cards; • Discover robotics; • Create a problem and have your child build a solution -- for example: Sally is at a play and can’t see the stage. What can you do to help Sally see the stage? Art Gather your craft supplies and have some fun by painting, drawing, colour- ing and creating art. Make sure to dis- play the finished artwork on your walls to brighten your mood. • Look to your recycling box for inspi- ration and turn empty egg cartons into 3D flowers; • Make family Christmas cards; • Make placemats for your table –- have children draw a picture of their favourite summer activity; • Buy some paint and canvas from a bargain store and host a painting party; or • Make bird seed ornaments and hang on trees in your yard. Cook Together Winter is a great time to gather as a family and try new recipes. Have your kids find new lunch recipes to try. • Teach your children how to bake -- let them measure out all the ingredients; • Let older children learn how to cook -- designate one day each week where they plan the menu and cook the meal; • Give older children a $20 budget and let them plan and cook a healthy meal that includes an item from each food group; or • Make healthy and fun snacks -- use cookie cutters to make shapes for your sandwiches and/or fruit. Listen to Music Nothing beats the winter blahs more than listening to some great music. • Host a dance party; • Go to the library and borrow different types of music; • Learn how to play an instrument; Writing Winter is a great time to write down your ideas. Keep a journal or make a goal card (what do you want to achieve this year) and keep it in your wallet, pencil case or lunch bag (a spot that you look every day). • Start a book club -- meet every two weeks to talk about a book; • Read a book together and have your child change the ending; or • Write a fun song, parody or jingle about having fun in winter. Re-live your favourite summer activities • Go camping in your living room. Pitch a tent, sleep in your sleeping bags, sing camp songs and make s’mores; • Build forts out of blankets; • Have a beach day; or • Have a picnic lunch in your living room. -- James MacKinnon, Tish Sheppard and Jane Ryan are teaching and learning con- sultants with the Durham Catholic Dis- trict School Board. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 1 4 , 2 0 1 6 14 AP Wednesday, December14 No rain checks and no price adjustments. This odds and ends Christmas tree is one holiday craft that lets your little one go crazy with the sticky stuff. It’s easy and fun to make, perfect for kids of any age and can be customized to use whatever craft odds and ends you have lying around the house. We used red and green buttons, tiny beads, pom poms and a bit of glitter for the star. But anything would work -- sequins, bits of tissue paper or ribbon, cotton balls, feathers, jewels. My four year old loved pouring the glue into the Christmas tree outline, he couldn’t believe I let him use half a bot- tle! He also had a blast sprinkling the deco- rations on and was amazed when every- thing stuck to the board after drying for a few hours. Odds and Ends Christmas Tree Materials: Small white canvas (available at most dol- lars stores) Green and yellow yarn White glue Buttons, sequins, beads, glitter, etc. Markers or crayons Directions: - Draw an outline of a Christmas tree and star on the canvas - Pour white glue along the outline of the drawing and affix green yarn to the tree area and yellow yarn to the star, let dry - Pour white glue into the yarn outlines, enough to fill completely - Sprinkle decorations liberally onto the glue, allow to dry several hours - Use markers or crayons to draw a tree stump -- Jillian Follert has worked as a journalist in Durham Region for more than 12 years and is passionate about telling local stories. She lives in Oshawa with her husband and their two unbelievably handsome boys. Ron Pietroniro / Metroland DURHAM -- This Odds and Ends Christmas Tree is a an easy, inexpensive holiday craft that kids of all ages will enjoy. Little kids will love that it requires lots of glue. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 1 4 , 2 0 1 6 15 AP Royal Lepage Signature Realty Brokerage Independently Owned and Operated Office:416-443-0300 Direct 416-574-3333 Email:louisesabino@royallepage.ca Web:www.LouiseSabino.com “YOUR HOME . When guided correct- ly, it will allow you and your family to feel mentally and physically accomplished with your results. It starts with the parents. Parents build the environment in which children grow and develop. We need to ensure that “drive-through” food or pizza delivery does not make up the majority of your weekly meals. Many of us fail to real- ize that 80 per cent of your fitness goals as a family is what you eat. I am not saying your family has to go on a diet but what will work is to start with small changes to your nutrition. Consistency is key. To get your family on board and to turn this into a lifestyle so it’s not “robotic”, the best thing to do is designate 1-2 days where you order pizza and make sure that instead of greasy toppings, you pick a few healthy options, and instead of pop, have natural fruit juice or water. With 1-2 days already covered, this allows you as par- ents to come up with home-cooked meals that will be far better for you and your family when trying to reach your fitness goals. Exercise like you mean it. Your workouts don’t have to be long. If you have 15-20 minutes, then you can complete an awesome workout that will have your clothes fitting exactly how you want. Here is a great workout to get you started: Warm-up: complete 2 sets • Jumping jacks –- 30 seconds • Jog on the spot -– 30 seconds Workout: Complete each exercise as many times as you can for 20 seconds. Try not to take a break between exercis- es. When you’ve completed all four, take a one-minute break and do the entire set again. How to complete: 5 sets/no break/one- minute break • Pushups • Squat jumps • Lunges • Mountain climbers Make this a lifestyle. Now that you have a guide on how to promote fitness in your home, the key is to stay consistent. It’s much easier for kids to get their exercise in. Whether it’s during recess, gym class or after school sports. Making sure your kids stay active, and not sitting in front of a TV screen, tablet or computer screen too much will help tre- mendously. For parents, allow your kids to see you taking time to go for a walk or join a local boot-camp class at Evolution Fitness Training to get guaranteed results and do something for yourself. Your kids will grow and follow your example; allowing fitness to become part of who they are. -- Sheldon Scott is the owner of Evolution Fitness Training which specializes in fat- melting boot camps. He lives in Courtice with his lovely wife, three kids and dog.
