Paving north Pickering roads Jason Liebregts / Metroland PICKERING -- Longtime Pickering resident Louis Mignault has been waiting for years for the City of Pickering to improve its roads in the north part of the city. He is pleased the City has approved a strategy to fix the roads in the area, particularly Westney Road. Council approves hard surfacing strategy for loose roads BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Longtime north Pickering resident Louis Mignault is pleased that he’ll have to wash his car a little less in the future thanks to a new roads strategy adopted by City council. “I have suffered for 30 years of that incredibly horrible dirt road,” Mignault said of Westney Road. The Northern Roads Hard Surfacing Strategy identifies existing loose sur- face roads to be upgraded to hard sur- face roads, from Taunton Road to the Uxbridge-Pickering Townline. Council adopted the strategy at its Oct. 17 meet- ing. Based on criteria such as maintenance cost savings, financial resources avail- able, average daily traffic, and resident concerns regarding road conditions, upgrades to five roads will be up for approval in the 2017 capital budget for a price tag of $11.6 million. GO enG Girl has increased number of female undergrad engineering students BY JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- For girls in elementary or high school, engineering may seem like a daunting career path. Mysterious even. What exactly, do engi- neers do? On Saturday, about 45 local girls in Grades 7 to 10 got an up close look at the annual Go ENG Girl event hosted by UOIT. “A lot of people don’t have any idea what engineering actually is. This demys- tifies it,” says Brittany McFarlane, UOIT’s program assistant for Women in Engi- neering “You use science and math. But it’s so much more than that. It’s about problem solving and creativ- ity and thinking about people’s needs.” Girls attending the Oct. 22 event had a chance to apply engineering concepts to every day problems, using littleBits cir- cuits to build an automatic pet feeder, and creating a waterproof roof that would sur- vive a downpour of water. GO ENG Girl launched in 2005 and has seen more than 16,000 girls attend events on university campuses across Ontario. The program aims to dispel stereotypes that discourage girls from pursuing engi- neering -- data from Engineers Canada shows that only one in five undergraduate engineering students is female. That number drops even more in the workforce. Since the inception of Go ENG Girl, the number of female students in engineering programs in Ontario has jumped from 15 per cent in 2005, to 21 per cent in 2015. Trish Jennett, 22, a fourth year engineer- ing student at UOIT, says programs like Go ENG Girl have a real impact. At age 12, she attended a similar event at Queen’s University, and it helped spark her interest. Now, she is an intern at global automo- tive supplier Magna, and hopes to pursue a career in quality control. “Most products you use every day, an engineer helped design or helped figure out how to make,” she says. “There are so many roles that engineers play, there is so much you can do with this career.” Natalie Maheu, also a fourth year engi- neering student at UOIT, initially wasn’t sure it was the right field of study for her. “Then I found out that so much of it is about solving puzzles and working as a team,” she says. “Those are things I’m good at...those are things a lot of girls are good at. To describe a girl, is to describe an engineer.” Visit www.onwie.ca for more informa- tion about the engineering profession and engineering programs offered in Ontario. Durham girls get a first-hand look at UOIT engineering program Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland OSHAWA -- Hayley Balson worked on waterproofing a roof during a workshop at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology recently. The Go ENG Girl program pro- vides an opportunity for girls in Grade 7 to 10 across Ontario to visit their local univer- sity campus and learn from women professionals, academics and students about the world of engineering. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Oc t o b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 6 3 AP Whitby Courthouse Theatre presents... AUGUST : OSAGE COUNTY by T r a c y L e t t s BY JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Police responded to the fatal stabbing of a woman in her Ajax home after a man called 911 and claimed he’d killed his wife, a murder trial heard Tues- day. Police arriving outside the Torr Lane residence on the evening of July 19, 2013, took Feraidon Ibrahem into custody after he emerged from the open doorway of the residence, Durham police Constable Josh Ferreira testified recently. “He said, ‘My wife -- she’s hurt upstairs’,” the officer testified. Police found the body of 31-year-old Nasira Fazli wrapped in a blanket on a second-floor landing, Ferreira testified. He said officers examining the woman, who was without vital signs, quickly deter- mined she’d been stabbed. Ferreira said that before arriving at the scene he learned from a dispatcher that a man had called 911, saying he’d killed his wife. Ibrahem admits he’s responsible for the death of Fazli, but has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Prosecutor Bren- da Green told jurors at the start of the trial they’ll have to decide if the killing was a planned and deliberate act. The couple entered into an arranged marriage in Afghanistan in 2010, and Ibra- hem joined his wife and their young son in Canada in April 2013, court has heard. Very quickly both were expressing disap- pointment, according to evidence entered at trial. Ibrahem, trained as a doctor in Afghanistan, wasn’t able to get accredi- tation here and struggled to find a job; entries in his journal show he felt resent- ment toward his wife. Fazli’s journals indicate she felt Ibrahem wasn’t the man she’d married in Afghani- stan. She had consulted a lawyer and was considering separation, court heard. A little over three months after Ibrahem’s arrival in Canada, Fazli was dead. The trial, before Superior Court Jus- tice Bruce Glass and a jury, continues in Oshawa. Publication Sales Agreement #40052657 column our opinion Large employers used to keep Dur- ham’s economic engine running but in 2016 it’s small- and medium-sized busi- nesses (SMEs) that keep the majority of us employed. In Durham Region, Statistics Canada’s Canada Business Count (2015) data shows small- and medium-sized businesses account for 34,072 jobs. As a group SMEs have considerable clout. Given their size these business owners are busy. Many work around the clock so time isn’t some- thing they have a lot to spare. Deadlines have to be met, orders have to be filled. Ask any owner or operator of such an enterprise and they’ll tell you, they don’t have the luxury of down time. The pace at which small- and medium- sized business operate is one of the rea- sons behind a finding the Business Devel- op Bank of Canada (BDC) discovered showing many of these companies don’t measure productivity. The BDC spoke about it at the Durham Region Business Summit, hosted by the Whitby Chamber of Commerce last week. “If it’s not as efficient, you’re leaving money on the table. In the long run, you can really hurt your business and it might not survive,” said Pierre Cleroux, the vice- president research and chief economist with the BDC. Cleroux said the BDC has a new free online tool at www.bdc.ca that will help businesses become more effi- cient and productive. He said business owners who do measure productivity see a 33 per cent increase in profits. This tool could not come at a better time for local SMEs. According to the Canadi- an Federation of Independent Business and the Institute for Competitiveness and Prosperity, two well-respected research organizations, Canada’s SMEs lag in pro- ductivity to our American neighbours. This impacts growth – economic, jobs and prosperity. The Durham Workforce Authority, an organization that develops local labour market research on behalf of the Provin- cial Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, said Durham Region continues to see SMEs be the engine of economic growth. This is consistent with the rest of the province. As such the majority of SMEs and could benefit from using the BDO tool as it allows them to compare their businesses with others in the same field. It can also show SMEs ways to reduce waste and become more efficient without necessarily having to work harder. The Canadian Federation of Indepen- dent Business says productivity is a key factor for economic growth. Productivity gains turn into lower prices for consumers, better wages for workers and increased competitiveness. In short it gives SMEs another tool in their tool boxes to becom- ing more successful. And when SMEs do well so too does Durham Region. Durham businesses need to measure productivity Paramedic partner is like family Gaining a sister-friend The other day I was driving and had one of those proud parenting moments I wish I could capture forever. My kids saw several paramedics outside of their ambulance at the hospital and my eight-year old said “Mommy, I want to be a paramedic.” After my initial maternal thought of horror and worry, my six year old piped up, saying “Yes, me too! And we can be partners!” Their conversation contin- ued by discussing how wonderful it would be to spend every day together, to work as a team, and to help people together. As my heart melted and their thoughtful chatter continued, I real- ized they were right about the impor- tance of times spent with a partner. Paramedics spend a quarter of our lives with our assigned partner, and a large chunk of that is spent in close quarters and a confined space, so you can imagine how lucky it is to have a partner who not only is a great profes- sional, but also who you enjoy spend- ing time with. I am fortunate that my partner is like family to me. I feel accepted for all of my ridiculous behaviours, my non- sensical chatter, my silly jokes, and my moods, emotions, quirks and man- nerisms. We’ve spent so much time together that she’s heard about every- thing from my childhood dreams and my challenges in life to my indecisive- ness about purchasing a bathing suit. I sometimes feel as though I am eight years old again, with no adult ego and self-consciousness inhibiting my per- sonality. Growing up I had a cousin who was like a sister to me, who I looked up to and loved and wanted to be around all the time because it just felt good. Now, I feel like I’ve gained another sister- friend through my partner. The feeling of being accepted through a place of non-judgement is so incredibly empowering, and through it all she seems to enjoy my compa- ny as much as I enjoy hers. I trust her decision-making, I know that she and I will do our best when we are called on to help, and I know that she’s got my back. She lives life with an open heart and open mind, and her fun-loving nature and radiance of positivity draw people to her. Her strength in charac- ter is inspiring, and I have learned a lot just by spending time in her presence. As my focus returned to my kids and I pulled into the driveway at home, I learned that both had dropped the idea of becoming a paramedic in favour of flying a helicopter, or perhaps becom- ing professional fishermen, and each agreed that it would be wise to choose separate jobs to facilitate meeting new people. I figure that’s a pretty good idea, too; you never know where you may find someone who becomes a part of your family. -- Angie Morrison is a paramedic for Northumberland Paramedics Angie morrison Guest columnist du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Oc t o b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 6 7 P Nest Wealth Traditional and hard to understand investment fees could be costing you up to 30% of your potential wealth.* Visit nestwealth.com ©Copyright 2016 Nest Wealth Asset Management Inc.“Nest Wealth”is the trade name of Nest Wealth Asset Management Inc. Staff plans to finish Westney within the next two years, and the others will fol- low. “At least we know which roads we’re looking at,” said Coun. Pickles. “We can rationale toward them, we can budget for them.” Mignault petitioned the City 15 years ago, along with 60 others, to do some- thing about Westney. “It was basically a country road slapped together and since it is a valley it gets a lot of water problems. Every time there is a bit of rain you get huge potholes and mud and of course in the spring when the ice melts it’s just a disaster area,” he said. The City maintains about 61 kilome- tres of paved roads in the area (which includes both northbound and south- bound lanes), and 104 kilometres of loose surface roads. “Particularly the cars were always filthy so it was very difficult to get to where you were going with clean clothes because you couldn’t help touching your car because it was caked with mud very often,” Mignault said. He said the mud would damage his brakes and his wheel balance. “The big advantage is we could always find our car in the parking lot,” he joked. The avid cyclist also packs up his bike and drives to the paved roads in Uxbridge so he can ride on a smooth surface. Mignault believes most of the City’s attention has been on south Pickering in the past and he’s pleased to see improve- ments taking shape in the north. The roads will not only provide better connectivity to regional roads and Hwy. 407 and Hwy. 7, but to Seaton employ- ment lands in the future as development continues in the north. The approval stems from a past motion brought forward by Coun. Pickles. “It’s been a while in the making,” said the councillor. “It’s a good strategy, it’s good work, it helps the City plan and will make a difference for residents in north Pickering as well.” The roads will be reconstructed, rather than resurfaced, due to the gravel base quality and thickness, which is currently inadequate. According to a staff report, the average operating cost for loose surface roads is more than four times that of hard sur- face roads. From 2011 to 2015, the average main- tenance cost for loose surface roads was $7,700 per kilometre and the operating cost for hard surface roads was $1,801 per kilometre. As an infectious diseases specialist, I see patients get very sick with influen- za when they are in the hospital -- and I even see some patients die. So for me -- as someone who sees all this and having studied all the research on the benefits and safety of the influ- enza vaccine -- I think it’s obvious that everyone should receive a flu shot. I know not everyone agrees, so I want to take some time to explain why I think it’s important for you to get a flu shot. Influenza is a virus that causes respi- ratory infections such as cough, sore throat, fevers, headaches, muscle aches. It is one of many respiratory viruses, but tends to cause the most severe infection. The “stomach flu” is not related and is usually a virus called “norovirus.” A flu shot is a vaccination. Vaccina- tions are a natural way of boosting the body’s immune system without getting the illness. They have been in use since the 18th century. It can be given into the muscle as a “shot” or as a nasal mist in children. You need to get a different influenza vaccine every year, because the influ- enza virus can change from year to year and the vaccine needs to be reformulat- ed regularly. The vaccine has been used by hun- dreds of millions of people, has been studied rigorously and has been shown to be very safe and effective (about 60 per cent on average). If I told you that there was a vaccine against heart attacks or stroke, would you get it? Multiple studies have shown that influenza infection can lead to heart attack or stroke (especially if you have risk factors such as diabetes) and getting the flu shot can prevent these serious conditions. As a parent, I advocate the flu vaccine because it keeps children safe. Babies are especially susceptible to severe disease. If your kids are under six months old they won’t be able to be vaccinated, so it’s important for people who spend time around small children to be protected so they don’t pass the virus along. In recent years, many studies have shown that get- ting the influenza vaccine in pregnancy is associated with improved outcomes for both mom and baby, since getting influenza infection in pregnancy can harm the fetus and the mom. If you have older parents or grand- parents, or know others with weakened immune systems, then the flu vaccine might be the best gift you can give them. These people do not respond to the flu shot as well as healthy folks and tend to get very sick as well. Studies have shown that if friends and family get their flu shots, they’re less likely to get sick. So, this year, give the gift of prevention —-- please get your flu shot. --- Daniel R. Ricciuto, MD, FRCPC, infec- tious diseases, infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial stewardship at Lakeridge Health. Submitted photo OSHAWA -- Dr. Daniel R. Ricciuto, infectious diseases, infection prevention and con- trol, and antimicrobial stewardship at Lakeridge Health. Safe travel for Durham parents and children doesn’t begin and end with car seats When I meet with families for car seat education and instal- lations, projectiles in the vehi- cle are always on the list of the safety topics we discuss. Caregivers are surprised to discover that those diamond- shaped Baby on Board signs that suction to the window become brittle, bend, warp and often crack over time, turning them into very sharp projec- tiles. Pull-down window shades that also suction to the win- dow have a metal bar at the top that the shade pulls down from. Anyone who has used them knows that they don’t stay on at the best of times and in the event of a collision, a side cur- tain airbag or the impact itself will launch the metal bar and window shade at the child and forward in the cabin. Some other common items that could injure an occupant in a collision are cellphones, purses, diaper bags, tools, hard toys, the family pet, sippy cups, bottles, and really anything that isn’t stowed or restrained. In a collision, even a light- weight object like a cellphone can cause injury because it increases its force when in motion. There is a general formu- la that allows us to estimate the impact of an object dur- ing a collision. Without getting into great detail, it basically is the weight of the object multi- plied by the speed the vehicle is travelling. That means that your half-pound cellphone in a 50-mile-per-hour collision would equal 25 pounds of force. Ouch! Families who have booster seats that do not latch into the vehicle (yes, some boosters do latch) should take note. When the unlatched seats in the vehi- cle without a passenger, in a collision they too become a dangerous projectile and could cause injury. A simple solu- tion is to teach booster riders to buckle up their empty seat each time they exit the vehicle to keep other passengers riding safely. It’s also important to teach children not to play with seat- belts. Many vehicles have seat-belts that lock when brakes have been firmly applied and also when the retractor is engaged by pulling the belt all the way out. A locked retractor can only be unlocked or disengaged by feeding the belt back up to the retractor housing. If a buckled child accidental- ly locks the seat-belt or worse wraps it around a body part, it will potentially hurt the child and in many cases the belt will need to be cut. It’s a good idea to keep a seat-belt cutter secured in your trunk or glove compartment in case of an emergency. -- Sandie Massie of Car Seat Connections is a child safety expert.
