Copyright © 2016 Advertising Feature Valley Plentiful garden group grows thanks to City’s sustainable neighbourhood grant Fruit trees, benches, new signage and native pollinator garden among improvements Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- What began with just a small group of avid gardeners planting seeds eight years ago, has grown into an active space with more than 70 people of diverse backgrounds and all ages harvest- ing a wide variety of produce each season. And the 100-bed community gar- den continues to thrive in the heart of Pickering. “The garden is more than just a place to grow food; it provides an opportunity for people of all ages, cultures, and socio- economic backgrounds to come together, make new friends, learn, and reap what they sow,” said Carolyn Kasperski, Valley Plentiful Community Garden’s co-ordina- tor. “Through the City’s program we were able to help the environment, and expand and enhance the space for all residents.” On Sunday, at its annual Harvest Festi- val, members unveiled an enhancement project, which was possible after winning the City of Pickering’s Celebrating Sus- tainable Neighbourhoods program. The program challenges neighbour- hood groups to complete activities that make Pickering a better place envi- ronmentally, socially, or economical- ly. Groups are composed of immediate neighbours, schools, businesses, places of worship, and organizations. Valley Plentiful has been working with the City over the past few months on a community enhancement project valued up to $10,000 as part of its winning efforts from last year’s program. “The neighbourhood program reflects our community’s commitment to a sus- tainable future and showcases all that can be achieved through partnerships, includ- ing that of our Sustainable Pickering con- tributors,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. The project includes a large native pol- linator and fruit-bearing shrub garden, which contains 267 plants from 17 dif- ferent native species, and a wheelchair accessible picnic table and an ergonomic bench made from recycled plastic. New signage properly identifies the site, and benches constructed by St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School students from recycled ash trees allow people to relax in the garden. “Now we have somewhere to sit down,” Kasperski said. “The whole community can use those benches, too.” It’s common for members to spend extra time at the garden. “You usually go there to garden for 20 minutes and you spend two hours,” said Kasperski. Eight additional vegetable garden plots have allowed some people to move off the waiting list that currently holds the names of around 60 people. “So those were pretty happy people,” laughed Kasperski. Finally, the planting of 11 dwarf fruit trees will see apples, pears, plums and cherries come to fruition each year on site. The four-by-30-foot plots are just $20 for the year, and fertilizer and seeds are provided. “If people can’t afford the bed, we waive the fee,” Kasperski said. “We supply all the tools for the gardeners as well.” Although not part of the $10,000 com- munity enhancement project, the City had the opportunity last week to install rubber interlock around a raised garden bed to make gardening even more acces- sible. School boards say air conditioning comes down to money, parents worry about student health BY JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- A sweaty start to the school year once again has parents in Durham question- ing why many classrooms are without air conditioning. Ajax parent Heather Morrow says her daughters, ages 5 and 7, have been coming home from school “sweaty and sick,” on hot days. “They need to lie down as soon as they come in, they’ve been sweating for six hours straight,” she says. “How can kids be expect- ed to pay attention and learn in those condi- tions?” Cindy Wells is mom to two elementary school students and one high school stu- dent, as well as a kindergarten lunch super- visor at Stephen G. Saywell P.S. in Oshawa. She says indoor temperatures over the first few weeks of the school year were very uncomfortable. “It wouldn’t surprise me if the inside tem- perature exceeded 40 C,” Wells said in a let- ter to the Metroland Media Group Ltd., Dur- ham Region Division, written the first week of school. “Today many children did not feel well due to the heat and parents were called to pick them up. I would estimate about half of our kindergarten class left early due to the heat.” It’s not just parents who are raising the issue -- the Elementary Teachers Federa- tion of Ontario is calling on the Province to “review the education funding model” to address heat and humidity in classrooms. “While installation of air conditioning is expensive, there are significant costs in not fixing the problem,” ETFO president Sam Hammond says. “Teaching and learning conditions are compromised, there are neg- ative health impacts for students and teach- ers including asthma, and mould and mois- ture issues can damage school infrastructure and materials.” The Durham District School Board cur- rently has full air conditioning in three ele- mentary schools -- C.E. Broughton P.S. in Whitby and Winchester P.S. in Brooklin, which run on a modified school year that begins in August, as well as Bolton C. Falby P.S, in Ajax. About 67 per cent of DDSB elementary schools have partial air conditioning, and 30 per cent have none at all. DDSB superintendent David Visser says when new elementary schools are built, the best they can do is provide air condition- ing in the library and administrative offices, a trend that started with schools built in the late 1990s. “That is the maximum that the allocation from the ministry will support without delet- ing anything else,” he explains, noting that the cool library “creates an area for reprieve” that classes can cycle through on hot days. Fifty-eight per cent of the DDSB’s second- ary schools have full air conditioning, the rest have air conditioning in some of the build- ing. The DDSB currently has $397 million worth of repairs and upgrades that need to be completed, which is why officials need to be “very strategic” with whatever money comes in, Visser says. “We are looking at the total needs of all our school inventory.” The DDSB is also making headway on introducing air conditioning to its portables. A new report says 36 per cent of 266 por- tables have air conditioning this year -- up from zero in 2013. The goal is to bump that number to 68 per cent by 2020. The Durham Catholic District School Board is even further ahead, with air condi- tioning in all 64 of its portables and all seven of its high schools. DCDSB superintendent Bob Camozzi says the board’s two newest elementary schools -- St. Kateri Tekakwitha C.S. in Oshawa and Father Fenelon C.S. in Pickering -- are also fully air conditioned, while the other 36 have air conditioning in the library and office. While it is “very cost prohibitive” to add air conditioning to existing schools, Camozzi said moving forward, all DCDSB schools will have it. “The key is that we now have very well designed schools that are more cost effective from an energy perspective,” he explained. Publication Sales Agreement #40052657 column Bless our first responders It’s my dinner break and I’m eating in the car, sneaking a few minutes to read my book in peace. Then I hear the unmistakable sound of a helicop- ter, the whup-whup-whup of the blades. I squint against the late afternoon sun and there it is –- the Ornge chopper, making its careful descent to the helipad. A feeling of dread fills my belly and, though I’m sitting, my knees go weak. Someone is hurt. And it’s bad -- bad enough to be airlifted. My mind spins back to 1986, to the sound of a telephone ringing in the mid- dle of the night. The caller’s a police officer and he asks for my dad. Panic takes hold as I stumble up the stairs to his bedside. I watch fear and distress play across Dad’s strong features, watch him rake his fingers through his disheveled hair. And I know. My little brother. My bratty, annoying, teenage brother. My cherished, little broth- er. The ride to Port Perry Hospital takes for- ever. I sit in the middle and hold Mom’s hand, feel quiet sobs rack her body. Then another endless trek on the dark highway to Oshawa hospital. The bright lights of the ER are unforgiv- ing. My brother looks bad; his blood so red in the stark glare. But he’s alive. I hear his apology to Mom, his garbled confes- sion. Her prized Camaro is wrecked -- as if it matters. The doctor asks my brother his name, his address. He gets the name right. But silence stretches as we wait for him to remember where he lives. ‘Met- ropolitan Toronto Zoo’, he finally says, his words strangely distorted. I smile and let my hot tears fall. My smartass little broth- er’s okay -- at least his head is. The relief is overwhelming and my knees threaten to give, the room starts to spin. I feel the steady arm of the nurse as she guides me to a chair. That night will stay with me forever. My brother’s tongue was almost bitten in two, his leg was shattered and he had multiple other injuries. But after weeks of rehabilita- tion, he healed; one leg a little shorter than the other and dozens of pink, shiny scars. But he was okay. And we still had him. But if the firefighters hadn’t worked tire- lessly that night to cut him free of Mom’s car and if the paramedics hadn’t stabi- lized and transported him to the hospi- tal and if the doctors hadn’t made critical decisions and ordered the right tests from behind-the-scene technologists and if the nurses hadn’t cared for him and interpret- ed the doctor’s orders, inserted his IVs and given him hope, who knows? Maybe he wouldn’t be okay. Kids think they’re invincible, that it won’t happen to them. But it can happen to them. And it does. So wrap them in your arms, even when they don’t want to, talk to them about driving recklessly, even when they don’t want to. And in the end they’ll do what they want. But let’s never forget our heroes. For it’s the soothing voice of our first respond- ers whom our sons and daughters hear when they’re scared, it’s our doctors who make life-saving decisions and do their damnedest to save our children when they’re wheeled into the ER, it’s the reas- suring touch of our nurses -- our angels -- who comfort and heal as our babies lie in a strange place. And let’s never forget these same heroes will carry images of broken bodies and shattered lives forever in their minds. Bless their hearts. Bless our heroes. -- Megan Denby lives in Port Perry and is the award- winning author of ‘A Thistle in the Mist’, a Scottish historical drama set in Scotland and Nova Scotia. She is currently working on the disturbing sequel, ‘Lost to the Mist’. megan Denby Guest columnist our opinion When school started a few weeks ago the weather outside was beautiful, hot and sunny. While that may have been ideal had the kids still been off on summer vaca- tion now that they are back in the class- room it wasn’t quite as wonderful. In a word, it was HOT and for those schools without air conditioning it made for a miserable time for students, teachers and staff alike. The issue boiled over to the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario. The union is calling on the Province to “review the education funding model” to address heat and humidity in classrooms. “Teaching and learning conditions are compromised, there are negative health impacts for students and teachers includ- ing asthma, and mould and moisture issues can damage school infrastructure and materials,” ETFO president Sam Ham- mond said. The Durham District School Board cur- rently has full air conditioning in three ele- mentary schools -- C.E. Fifty-eight per cent of the DDSB’s secondary schools have full air conditioning, the rest have air conditioning in some of the building. Portables are another story. A report shows 36 per cent of 266 portables have air conditioning this year -- up from zero in 2013. The Durham Catholic District School Board has air conditioning in all 64 of its portables and all seven of its high schools. In an ideal world air conditioning would be installed in every school and portable across the Province. But air conditioning costs money and given the current fund- ing model it’s just not reasonable to have it installed in every school. If it was changes would have to be made, possibly modify- ing most, if not all, school years and cuts in other areas would have to happen. Heat and humidity is not something schools have to deal with on an extended basis. Yes, it does get warm as the school year draws to a close and sometimes Sep- tember is a bit sticky but for the most part air conditioning is not a need. We would argue it’s a want. As newer schools are built air condition- ing could more easily be incorporated into their structures than trying to retrofit exist- ing school buildings. Every school without air conditioning should operate with frequent water breaks and if there is a space, such as a library, that has air conditioning, classes should be rotated in and out of that room to give all students and teachers a break from the heat. The school year started off hot but is redoing the funding formula or eliminat- ing other programs, repairs or equipment for the sake of air conditioning worth it? We don’t think so. It’s not practical to install air conditioning in all schools du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 8 , 2 0 1 6 7 P Tel: 905.449.1115 • www Blinds, Shutters, Custom Draper Always FREE INSTALLATION and In-Home Consultation with our Interior Decorator Decorate your home for the holidays before the rush and SAVE With 50% Off Custom Made holidays before the rush and SAVE el: 905.449.1115 • www.feather yournest.me Custom Draper y & more TION and In-Home Consultation with our Interior Decorator holidays before the rush and SAVE With 50% Off Custom Made Window Coverings From TOCTOBER , 201 7-9 p.m. #speakupdurham DIVERSITY OPEN HOUSE EVERYONE WELCOME RSVP: SPEAKUPDURHAM@DRPS.CA JOIN THE CONVERSATION: Chief Paul Martin, Deputy Chief Chris FernandesChief Administrative Officer Stan MacLellan Discussion Focus: Diversity – Police and Community Relations Have a question please email speakupdurham@drps.ca For more information please visit www.drps.ca or follow us on twitter @drps #SpeakUpDurham DIVERSITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE Reserve 905-472-3085 herongate.com Herongate BarnDinner Theatre Save $12.00 off coupleOctober 14th, 23rd or 29th with this coupon Taser arrived, backing away and trying to commu- nicate with the man. The SIU investigates reports involving police that result in serious injury, death or allegations of sexu- al assault. SIU says police shooting of knife-wielding man in Port Perry justified BY JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- No charges will be laid against a Durham police officer who fatally shot a knife- wielding man during a con- frontation last January in Port Perry. Gerald Rattu was advancing while armed with a knife and imploring the officer to shoot him during the incident on the evening of Jan. 16, according to a decision released Monday by the Special Investigations Unit. The officer, who wasn’t named, considered alternatives to deadly force, but ran out of options as the confrontation with Rattu quickly unfolded in the driveway of the home on Waterbury Crescent, SIU direc- tor Tony Loparco concluded. “The officer was faced with a dangerous and dynamic situa- tion that unfolded quickly over a mere 52 seconds,” Loparco’s Sept. 26 statement said. “His decision to fire his gun was rea- sonable in the circumstances, and he only did so when he had no other options.” Rattu, 59, of Woodville, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest. The subject officer co-operated with the investigation, which included tak- ing statements from nine civilians and five witness officers, the SIU said. In the days following the shooting, the actions of police were criticized by Rattu’s girlfriend, Laurie Bailey, who said he was distraught and acting out of character. “He was a big teddy bear,” she said at the time. “He didn’t deserve this.” The SIU found the officer was respond- ing to a 911 call about a man armed with a knife who was trying to kill himself, and upon arrival at the residence encountered a young woman who emerged from a car and indicated people were in danger. As he approached the house, the officer became aware of Rattu, who walked down the driveway with a large butcher knife pressed against his own chest. The offi- cer drew his pistol and ordered Rattu to halt and drop the knife; Rattu refused and advanced while encouraging the officer to shoot, the SIU found. The individuals should live in Durham Region and must have knowledge of envi- ronmental issues and an interest in protect- ing and enhancing the region’s environ- ment. Post-secondary student membership is open to students living in Durham for the school year and enrolled full-time in a col- lege or university program. DEAC is a volunteer committee that pro- vides advice to Durham Regional council on environmental planning matters, along with being involved with awareness and outreach activities. Membership on DEAC exposes individuals, including students, to a broad range of environmental issues, as well as the functions of Regional government. Interested applicants have to submit a letter of interest, along with a resume, by Friday, Oct. 14. Post-secondary students should outline their knowledge of environ- mental issues, and how they feel they can contribute to the committee. Those selected will be expected to attend an evening meeting once a month at the Regional headquarters in Whitby. Individual submissions will first be consid- ered by the planning division before a deci- sion on the appointment is made by Region- al council. Submissions should be sent by e-mail to deac@durham.ca or mailed to: Brian Bridgeman, Commissioner of Plan- ning and Economic Development, The Regional Municipality of Durham, Planning and Economic Development Department - 4th Floor, 605 Rossland Rd. Woman charged with break-ins at seniors’ apartments in Durham ne w s d u r h a m ne w s d u r h a m ne w s d u r h a m DURHAM -- A Belleville woman has been charged in connection with break-ins at seniors’ apartments across Durham. Tips from the public led to the arrest after police released images of a female suspect who was captured on video in July enter- ing seniors’ apartments and stealing cash at a building on Perry Street in Whitby. Investi- gators believed the suspect was connected to up to six similar incidents in Whitby, Ajax and Oshawa. On Sept. 23, investigators arrested a woman at her apartment in Belleville. Angela Tracey-Hannah, 40, of Sidney Street in Belleville, is charged with three counts of breaking and entering. The investigation is ongoing and police want to ensure there are no other victims. Anyone with new information is asked to con- tact Detective Constable Rayner (ext. 1854) or Det. Sitaram (ext. 2741) of the Criminal Inves- tigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1854. As we age, we are often concerned about the health of our hearts, our brains and our joints but give little thought to the health of our livers. Unfortunately, those who are between the ages of 41 and 71 are up to five times more likely to be living with hepatitis C -- a potentially life-threat- ening liver disease -- than people in other age groups, according to Public Health Agency of Canada. The results of a new online survey from the Canadian Liver Foundation show the majority of Canadians in this group (over 80 per cent) are unaware of their increased risk, and only one- quarter have been tested for the virus. More than 250,000 Canadians are cur- rently living with chronic hepatitis C, a blood-borne virus that attacks the liver. Yet it’s estimated that 44 per cent don’t know they’re infected. This is because the disease may have no obvious symp- toms until it reaches an advanced stage in which serious liver damage occurs leading to cirrhosis and even liver can- cer. Contracting Hepatitis C I’ve worked with countless patients who have contracted the disease unknowingly and lived several decades before being diagnosed. In many cases, they may have no idea how or when they were exposed. The most important and most appar- ent risk factor is exposure to improp- erly sterilized medical procedures, (including vaccination) in the 1940s to 1960s and even later in some countries. Other known risk factors include injection drug use (even once), tattoos or piercings before disposable equip- ment was introduced, having had a blood transfusion or received blood products prior to July 1990. Rarely sharing personal hygiene items with an infected person (e.g. razors, toothbrushes, nail clippers) may also result in transmission of infection. Canadians Who Are At Risk Researchers believe hepatitis C infec- tions spiked in the post-war years as a result of increases in medical proce- dures that used equipment (such as the use of non-disposable needles and glass syringes) that were not steril- ized using the methods in use today to prevent the transmission of viruses. Because of this, adults born between 1945 and 1975 have much higher odds of having hepatitis C. Those who have arrived in Canada from Eastern Europe, Latin America, countries of the former Soviet Union, and certain countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia where the hep- atitis C is more common are also at a greater risk of having the disease. Knowledge is Power All it takes to find out if you have hep- atitis C is a simple blood test available from your doctor. The test is covered by all provincial health plans. If you, or somebody you know, are a part of these-high risk groups, get tested with- out delay. Being diagnosed with any serious dis- ease can be a frightening experience, but thanks to research there are treat- ments that can cure hepatitis C. Today’s drug therapies are effective, easy to take and have few side effects. To learn more about hepatitis C and to take a hepatitis risk questionnaire in English, French, or Chinese visit www. liver.ca/couldyouhaveit. --- Dr. Morris Sherman is a hepatologist in Toronto and Chairman of the Cana- dian Liver Foundation du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 8 , 2 0 1 6 19 AP U6, U8, U10, U12, U15, U18, Women’s, men’s, Co-ed WINTERPROGRAM REGISTRATIONNOW OPEN pickeringsoccer.ca/registration 905-831-9803 1975ClementsRd.,Pickering psc@pickeringsoccer.ca PiCkeRing SoCCeR CenTRe Win AFreeentryinto ASeniorLeague. And as women, we sometimes get so focused on caring for others we forget that caring for our- selves is important to our families, too. But now is the perfect time to put your health and wellbeing first by booking your mammogram and Pap test. It’s no coincidence that you hear us talking a lot about the importance of screening for women’s cancers this time of year. October is Breast Cancer Aware- ness Month and National Cervical Can- cer Awareness Week is Oct. 17 to 21. We know that more than 9,000 women in Ontario will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. One in 150 women will develop cervical cancer. As the regional primary care screen- ing and prevention lead for the central east regional cancer program, I’m often asked why you should screen for cancer. The answer is simple -– cancer screen- ing can save your life. Having a regular mammogram can detect cancer early when it is more treatable. Cervical can- cer is almost entirely preventable with regular screening. Screening for women’s cancers is quick, easy and it’s free. The average mammogram takes just five minutes to book and less than 10 minutes to com- plete. A Pap test is a simple test that can be done at your family doctor’s office or a walk-in clinic or sexual health clinic if you don’t have a doctor. So there’s the why. Now, here’s the when. Women aged 50 to 74 who are at aver- age risk for breast cancer should have a mammogram every two years. Women who are over the age of 21 who are -- or have ever been -- sexually active should screen for cervical cancer by having a Pap test every three years. But if you have questions, talk to your family doc- tor. He or she will be able to provide you with more information about when to screen for these women’s cancers. And if you know you’re overdue for a mammogram or a Pap test, now is a great time to get booking them. Oct. 20 is Cancer Care Ontario’s provincial Day of the Mammogram. A number of Ontar- io breast screening program sites in our region and across Ontario are offering longer hours of operation and inviting more walk-in appointments. If you’re eligible for a mammogram, you can book one at any OBSP site by calling 1-800- 668-9304, or visiting www.cancercare. on.ca/justbookit . To book a Pap test, call your family doctor or visit www.cancer- care.on.ca/paptest to find a clinic near you. Take the time to make screening for these women’s cancers a regular part of what you do to stay healthy, because your health and wellbeing matters -- and it matters to the people who love you as well. --- Dr. Onye Nnorom is the regional prima- ry care and cancer screening lead at Lak- eridge Health Make October more about you and get screened for women’s cancers Dr. Onye Nnorom Guest columnist Support Groups Wednesday, October 12 AjAx Caregiver Support Group 10 a.m. 12 p.m. Pickering Village United Church, 300 Church street north, ajax. Cindy, 59, passed peacefully at home with family in the early hours of Saturday, September 17th. Cindy was the best friend and dearly loved wife of Larry Harding, cherished mom to her two daughters - Jamie Otter and husband Fred, and Jessie Harding and partner Dave Hodgson - and beloved daughter of Muriel "Babe" and the late Art Smith. Cindy will be forever missed by her treasured granddaughters Averie and Brynlee. She will be fondly remembered by her sister Karen Munroe and her husband Don, nieces Tracey and Kelly and other family members. She is also survived by siblings Larry and Robin. Her work was a passion. As a long-time employee of Scotiabank, Cindy helped countless people achieve their goal of home ownership, and recently saw her own dream project completed: a beautiful house on 85 acres of farmland. Some of her happiest times were spent at the family cottage, making memories with those she loved. Though she is gone too soon, she lives forever in the hearts of everyone she touched with her smile, laughter and drive to help others at any opportunity. Visitation will take place at BARNES MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 5295 Thickson Rd. N. Whitby, on Thursday September 22nd from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. On Friday, a service to celebrate and remember Cindy will be held in the Barnes Chapel at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Spinal Cord Injury Ontario or a local charity of your choice would be appreciated. Messages of condolence and shared memories can be left for the family by visiting barnesmemorialfuneralhome.com. SMITH, Joyce Swinton (nee Cross) - With great sadness the children of Joyce Smith announce her passing on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Meaford General Hospital in her 93rd year. Beloved wife of the late Harry M. Smith. Daughter of the late George and Charlotte Cross. Predeceased by her siblings Allyn, Dorothy and Marjorie. Loving mother of Lynda and Art, Sharon and Wayne, Cindy and the late Ted, and David and Trish. Loving grandmother of the late Scott Gregory and survived by Cameron (Darlene), Erica, Lisa, Kerri (Tim), Katie (Brandon), Matt, Lesley (Isy), Douglas, Jordyn and Jocelyn. Loved great grandmother (GG) of Alison, William, Sarah and Connor. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Will be missed by all family pets, particularly Abby. Joyce was a long-time member of the United Church of Canada and currently a member of Grace United in Thornbury. Actively involved in the UCW, a Sunday School teacher, C.G.I.T. and Explorer leader and choir. A recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award. Joyce was actively involved in the Ajax community. Five years ago Joyce made a decision to move closer to family in Thornbury. She embraced the new community and enjoyed her many interests. The family will receive friends at the McEACHNIE FUNERAL HOME, 28 Old Kingston Road, Ajax (Pickering Village), 905-428-8488, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, September 27th and on Wednesday, September 28th at Pickering Village United Church, 300 Church Street North, Ajax (Pickering Village) from 12 Noon to 2:00 pm with the funeral to immediately follow. The family would like to thank the staff at Meaford General Hospital and Dr. Naomi Klages for their exceptional care.
