For 27 years, the SiS organization has been working to ignite the passion of science, technology, engineering and mathematical studies in children, through workshops in which students are able to see, touch, and do science investigations in their own class- rooms. The half-day workshops are run by highly trained individuals and have a maximum of 30 children participating, in order to allow for a hands-on experience. “They get very excited,” Amy Schindler, SiS director of fund development and commu- nications, said in reference to children when they see the SiS presenters in their schools. Adams, a plant ecologist, started volun- teering with the organization two years after its inception, and it was run out of her Pickering home in the early days. “It’s hard to put words to it. Sometimes you have to stop and pinch yourself,” Adams said of the program’s success. For many years, before moving to its new location in Pickering, SiS was running out of an office located in Ajax. Adams noted the new space is 40 per cent larger than the previous space, but the charity is paying the same price for rent. “I know Ajax is a big part of your growth but welcome back to Pickering,” said Ward 2 City Councillor and Deputy Mayor Ian Cum- ming, who spoke on behalf of the City of Pickering. Adams said SiS loves being part of the tight-knit community in Durham and staff and volunteers are grateful to have been able to work together with teachers, schools, school boards and community partners to provide STEM (science, technology, engi- neering and math) enrichment to students for many years. Although the charity has grown and now offers its hands-on, discovery-based class- room and community workshops across Ontario and Southern Alberta, it remains a strong part of students’ learning in Durham. “Last year, our passionate presenters deliv- ered over 1,700 hands-on, discovery-based classroom and community workshops in Durham Region,” Adams said. The workshops run in around 130 class- rooms on an average day during the school year and the presenters make it easy for chil- dren to believe science is really for everyone. “The kids are completely pumped and energized,” she said. Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade executive director Kathy McKay said it’s no small feat to keep an organization running for this long. “Congratulations. You’re expanding. You’re going to do great things,” said McKay. She noted SiS has been a member of the APBOT for at least 10 years and has won a Businesses Excellence Award, even before there was a special category for not-for-prof- it organizations. One of the issues stressed in the speech was soaring hydro rates across the province. Her solution? The Province will elimi- nate the 8-per-cent provincial share of the 13-per cent HST as of Jan. 1. That will save the average household $130 a year. That’s a whole $10.83 per month. Do you think that’s going to help Oshawa resident Jeff Goodall whose most recent hydro bill was $101.15, more than double the $42.07 he paid during the same peri- od last year? That would still leave his bill at $90.32, significantly higher than what he paid a year ago. Or what about the City of Oshawa’s most recent hydro bill that Mayor John Henry dropped off to Oshawa MPP Jennifer French’s office. French is collecting hydro bills from residents across Durham Region to share with the Liberal government. She wants to demonstrate hydro rates are destroying family and business budgets. The City of Oshawa hydro bill was $151,000 for 12,639 streetlights. The 66,000 kilo watt hours of electricity cost the City $3,678.89. But there was a line on the bill that floored Mayor Henry. It was slugged ‘global adjustment’ and it was for $62,325.42. According to the Ontario Ener- gy Board, the global adjustment “reflects the differences between the market price of electricity and the regulated or contract prices that are paid to generators for the electricity they produce”. Mayor Henry said that streetlight bill means the City is spending about $700,000 a year in global adjustment fees for street- lights alone. He has a similar bill on file for the Legends Centre where the communi- ty centre used $8,600 in power and paid a $48,000 global adjustment. MPP French said by going through the countless bills brought to her office she is getting a clearer picture about the impact hydro rates are having on families and businesses. “We’re now getting it from businesses, we now have received it from a municipal- ity and you start to see that the individual in their townhouse is only part of the pic- ture and our streetlight bill in the City of Oshawa, those two things are connected.” Cities get their money through taxpayers so this ‘global adjustment fee’ is going to be paid by all of us. It’s a double whammy for residents in every municipality across Dur- ham Region and the rest of the Province. Getting rid of the provincial portion of the 13-per cent HST on hydro bills was a good start for Kathleen Wynne but it doesn’t even come close to solving the problem. How about reforming how the Province signs contracts with generators? Right now, the Province signs long-term contracts with electricity generators. Instead, the Province should make generators compete in auctions for the right to hold short-term contracts to generate electricity. Competi- tion is always good for pricing. And the Province should follow through on its planned Hydro One sale. Private investors can bring cost discipline that would keep costs lower and the provincial regulator can ensure the private company passes on cost savings to consumers. These are just two ideas. To do nothing more is not an option. Financially ruining family budgets and driving businesses out of Ontario is no way to govern. Premier’s solution to soaring hydro rates doesn’t even come close to being enough Breaking barriers: Free humanities course opens doors Community outreach program returns to Trent University Durham for fall 2016 Did you know that if you’re try- ing to convince a friend to let you borrow their car, their answer is more likely to be ‘yes’ if they are holding a warm cup of tea in their hands? How about the the- ory that a rhinoceros horn may be able to detect poison in someone’s drink? Among many other topics, these are two that I can recall generating an enthusi- astic discussion during the Humanities 101 courses offered at Trent Universi- ty Durham over the past two years. By connecting professors and communi- ty members, the Humanities 101 pro- gram at Trent’s Durham campus offers a learning opportunity for residents in the Durham region who may be looking for a post-secondary experience. In 2014, Trent University Durham launched this free, ten-week, non- credit course to community members who might be interested in educational opportunities but are perhaps hesitant to apply to a traditional program due to financial barriers, intimidation, or vari- ous other factors. Lectures and discussions are led by Trent University professors who volun- teer their time for the program. Each week, topics of discussion range from the humanities and social sciences, such as Anthropology, English Litera- ture and Psychology, to Social Work and Child and Youth Studies. Assignments and tests are not required. It is the goal of the program to continue to connect Trent University Durham with the larg- er local community and make life-long learning accessible, and the campus a welcome place for neighbors across the Region. Trent University Durham works with community organizations who rec- ommend students to the program and the campus covers all costs associated with the course. If required by partici- pants, childcare coverage, bus fare, and writing materials are provided, as are refreshments each week and access to the campus library. The program was developed to ensure that participants enjoy the experience and are a true member of the campus community. As Humanities 101 begins for the third year, we look forward to welcoming new community members to campus for a unique and personal learning oppor- tunity right in their own backyard. The feedback from Humanities 101 alumni who have completed the program con- tinues to be positive and the Universi- ty is thrilled to be able to offer this out- reach program. Burlington man faces numerous charges DURHAM -- A disgruntled impaired driv- ing suspect further deepened his legal woes when he dropped his trousers in a Durham police station and challenged cops to a fight. The arrest -- and re-arrest -- were the cul- mination of a series of events that began at about 4:15 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, when citizens reported a suspected impaired driver on Bayly Street in Ajax, police said. Witnesses used their vehicles to block in a Subaru that was seen being driven errati- cally before it struck a metal construction fence at Harwood Avenue. Police arrested the driver and seized narcotics from the car. A suspect was pro- cessed at the West Division station in Pickering and upon his release was wait- ing for a ride home when he became agitated, swearing, chal- lenging officers to fight, and finally dropping his pants and exposing himself, police said. The man was arrested again and this time, he was held for a bail hearing. Sometimes, cracking open even a short novel can be daunting for a reluctant reader. Big blocks of grey text with few accompa- nying pictures can present challenges for a child who is ambivalent about reading at the best of times. Graphic novels, comics, trade paper- backs -- whatever you want to call them -- present material in such a way that they don’t even feel like reading. They are fun -- and that’s a big part of why kids devour them. Kids who hate reading reg- ular books will waste no time polishing off a giant classic comic like Bone. While comics are more accepted than ever as a valid literary art form, parents still need to remember to follow age guidelines. Just because a child likes Bat- man or Deadpool doesn’t mean certain titles will be age-appropriate. Remem- ber that comics aren’t just for kids and some can contain violence, swearing and mature content. Review the book first or, when in doubt,: ask. We’ve put togeth- er a handy, age-appropriate list of some of the best current titles out there, all of which are great for kids and their parents. Ages four to six • Tiny Titans by Art Baltazar and Fran- co Aureliani (DC Comics): This book is a fantastic introduction to superheroes, particularly the younger set of heroes, like Robin, Cyborg and Batgirl. The adult characters are often presented as just a set of legs -- not far off from what little preschoolers see in the world. • Owly by Andy Runton (Top Shelf Pub- lications): These ultra cute graphic novels about a baby owl and his friends, Wormy, Snaily, and Scampy the chipmunk, are wordless meaning they are great for pre-readers. Word balloons or talking between characters consists of symbols, making them open to your child’s imagi- nation. • Ordinary People Can Change The World by Brad Meltzer and Chris Elio- poulos: The history of everyday heroes like Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Albert Einstein, Lucille Ball, Jim Henson and Amelia Earhart told in adorable comic form. The text to panels of comics with word balloons helps readers learn how to read comics and the art evokes Bill Wat- terson’s Calvin and Hobbes series. • DC Superhero Girls (DC Comics): When this line was announced by DC Comics in 2015, it was meant to show young girls that the world of comics is open to them, too. It’s since become a massive success, with a line of action fig- ures, webisodes, an hour-long movie, and three novels to go along with two graphic novels (the second to be released Nov. 8). Ages six to eight • Superheroes: Teen Titans GO! by J. Tor- res; Spidey: Treasury Edition by Robbie Thompson, Brian Michael Bendis; Bat- man: Li’l Gotham by Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs: Teen Titans GO! expands on the younger heroes from Tiny Titans and ages them up so they are middle school to high school age. It also con- nects with the popular TV show. The Spi- dey: Treasury Edition collects the origin stories of both Peter Parker and the new Spider-man, Miles Morales, a great char- acter and a welcome addition to the Mar- vel universe. Batman: Li’l Gotham intro- duces kids to holidays via Batman and his rogues gallery of villains. All the charac- ters are cute and not scary at all. • Disney Comics: Star Wars: Jedi Acad- emy by Jeffrey Brown; Disney Princess Comics Treasury; Uncle Scrooge by Carl Barks: Star Wars: Jedi Academy is a kid- friendly version of Star Wars, written and illustrated by the same author who cre- ated Darth Vader and Son and Vader’s Little Princess. Disney Princess Comics Treasury is a giant comic adaptation of all your kids’ favourite Disney movies. The Uncle Scrooge series collects the original comics from the late 1940s to early 1960s. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 1 4 , 2 0 1 6 13 AP 905-279-4500 •www.keyassets.ca Do you have room in your heart and your home? Torres: Princeless is a welcome and empowering story about a young black princess who saves herself. Zita the Spacegirl features adventures in space, aliens, and clean, yet whimsical art. Ages eight to 10 • Superheroes: Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Ms. Marvel (Marvel Comics); Leg- end of Wonder Woman and Study Hall of Justice (DC Comics): Squirrel Girl and Ms. Marvel offer really fun -- and funny -- comics with relatable characters. The Legend of Wonder Woman introduces kids to Wonder Woman, while Study Hall of Justice is a detective-style mystery star- ring child versions of Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman. • Independent titles: Lumberjanes and Adventuretime (BOOM! Studios); Smile, Drama, Sisters and the Babysitters’ Club by Raina Telgemeier: Lumberjanes fol- lows a group of young girls at summer camp, while Adventuretime comics are based on the zany TV show. Pick up any- thing by Raina Telgemeir and you won’t be disappointed -- in fact, all of Telge- meier’s slice of life graphic novels have made it to the top of the New York Times’ best sellers list. • Classics: Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi and Bone by Jeff Smith. These two almost always make top kids’ comics lists and for good reason: they are classic tales that stand the test of time. Ages 10 to 12 • Superheroes: Harley and Ivy, Batman: Mad Love (DC Comics); Totally Awe- some Hulk (Marvel): Who doesn’t love Harley Quinn these days? Start out with her origin story in Batman: Mad Love, which explores the tumultuous relation- ship between her and the Joker. Parents can use this as a conversation starter on healthy versus unhealthy relationships with their kids. For lighter fare, pick up Harley’s adventures with her BFF, Poison Ivy in Harley and Ivy. Tons of kids love the Hulk and the newest version, Ama- deus Cho, is younger, funnier and a lot more relatable for tweens. • Independent titles: Mouse Guard by David Petersen; Nimona by Noelle Ste- venson; Roller Girl by Victoria Jamie- son: Mouse Guard is a classic story about sentient mice warriors in medieval era. Nomina starts out as a fun tale of a vil- lain’s sidekick, but does get pretty dark, so keep in mind the age guide. Roller Girl is a sweet tale about a girl who finds fun and friends in a roller derby. Ages 13 to 15 • Superheroes: DC Bombshells, Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka, Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott (DC Comics); Spider-man/ Deadpool, Young Avengers, The Mighty Thor, Vote Loki (Marvel): DC Bombshells is one of the best introductions to super- hero comics for those who don’t even like them -- and, of course, for those who do. Starring a huge lineup of female charac- ters and set in the Second World War, this title is one to read for both parents and teens. On the Marvel side, the teen years are the perfect time to get into Deadpool comics. Start off with the super funny Spider-man/Deadpool. The Mighty Thor and Vote Loki have political aspects to them which are appropriate for this age group. • Independent titles: Archie, Afterlife with Archie, Sabrina: the Teenage Witch, Betty and Veronica, Jughead, Josie and the Pussycats: Don’t knock Archie Com- ics! The entire line has gone through big changes. Afterlife with Archie is a dark title where Archie’s world meets zom- bies and Sabrina: the Teenage Witch is a seriously creepy homage to classic hor- ror comics. The main Archie title by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples reinvigorates the series with a fresh, current take and Betty and Veronica are no longer sniping at one another after a boy. -- Elisabeth Pfeiffer is a local first-time mom and freelance journalist. He was a much-loved husband, dad, granddad, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. Bob will be forever missed by his wife, Sirkku; sons, Michael (Blythe), Lorne (Kelly), Jesse (Shannon) and Jamie; grandchildren, Michael, Jacob, Ethan and Rachel; brother, Dave (April); sisters, Barb (Ron) and Gail (Louis); and dear friend, Ann. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Alta and Ford, and his sister Pauline. Born in Nova Scotia on August 8, 1945, Bob moved to Toronto at the age of 18. He loved sports and spent many years coaching hockey and baseball. Hockey was his passion and he was known as Coach Bob for decades, first with the North Toronto Hockey Association and then the Pickering Hockey Association. Throughout his life, Bob gathered friends wherever he went. He loved to spend his summers at Six Foot Bay where he was busy helping friends or playing his music on the deck. Heartfelt thanks to our many friends and neighbours who have expressed such love, support and kindness at this difficult time. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 1st at the East Shore Community Centre in Pickering from 3-7 p.m. Online condolences may be left at www.aftercare.org NICOLL, Kenneth Gordon (Ken) September 2, 1927 - September 9, 2016. Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. Much cherished and loved husband of Madeline (Maddie). Loved and adored father of Ken, Jeff, Kim (Randy), Kelly (Tim) and adored grandfather of Brett, Derek, Ryan, Shannon, Kenny, Kayla and Danielle. Will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour, love of music, amazing singing and drumming abilities, bringing pure joy to so many and his love of his family. May you rest in peace our dear "DAD". We miss you so much and love you with all our hearts. A private Family celebration of life will be held in Ken's Honour. In memory of Ken, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society. www.kidney.ca and www.cancer.ca ZEH, Konrad July 21, 1936 - September 1, 2016 - We are sad to announce that Konrad passed away at Ajax-Pickering Hospital September 1, 2016. He is survived by his adoring wife Teresa (Teri) Cordes, son Mark, and granddaughter Samantha. And predeceased by son Brian in 2013. Konrad was a brother, brother-in-law, father-in-law, uncle, nephew and cousin, neighbour and friend to many. Konrad was born in Germany and came to Canada in 1953. He was an active resident in the Bay Ridges area in Pickering, Ontario, since the early 1960s and a former member of PESCA, LACAC and United Way Board of Directors. In 2001 he retired from the Printing industry, typesetter turned proof-reader and became an avid motorcyclist, specifically sidecar motorcycles. He and Teresa enjoyed many adventurous trips in that sidecar and made countless friends on their travels. Konrad was a man you did not forget. He will be remembered as he was in life - - unconventional, frugal and practical. And in keeping with that, no formal service will be held. A remembrance celebration will be held on Sept. 17, 2016. Contact family for details. In lieu of flowers donations to Rouge Valley Ajax-Pickering Hospital for staff education is requested by family. McAVOY, Frank June 2, 1922 - September 9, 2016. This year, the doctors, nurses & volunteers are excited that the tournament’s proceeds are supporting a new and innovative program housed at our hospital, but whose impact will be felt throughout our community. Every year, over 30,000 people in the CE LHIN visit their family doctor because of shoulder pain, making it second only to low back pain in terms of disability and costs. Patients often experience 12 to 18 months of unresolved pain and discomfort before being referred on to an orthopaedic surgeon. During this time, many patients remain without a concise diagnosis, while receiving unnecessary diagnostic tests, ineffective medication and physiotherapy, only to return to their family doctor several times before being referred on to a specialist. Designed and led by RougeValley’s own shoulder surgeons, The Shoulder Centre is transforming the way shoulder pain is treated: redefining and shortening the patient journey, increasing the ease and access to consistent and quality care, as well as addressing system inefficiencies that challenge health service sustainability. It’s a fantastic choice for many reasons. Louie Di Tacchio and his team from Progress TravelPlus has been helping couples plan fabulous, awless destination weddings for more than 30 years. And, he loves it! He can help you, too! Here are a few tips he suggests: Enjoy a stress free planning process With destination weddings becoming more popular, many resorts and venues now o er complete packages that include the services needed for your big day. From o ciates and orists to catering and the special touches, all of the research is already done for you! Naturally, this makes the process much easier for our clients, and in return they’re more stress-free, calm, and able to enjoy the planning process. Avoid the ‘snowball guest list phenomenon’ When planning a wedding, most of our clients experience the ‘snowball guest list phenomenon’. is happens when your manageable guest list rises as your big day gets closer. Before you know it, your list has grown by 50%, you are stressed and the expenses are adding up! A destination wedding is a big time and money commitment for your guests and it reduces the actual attendees to those willing and able to invest that time and money for travel. You’re also more likely to keep your guest list to your nearest and dearest. Disappointed that some family and friends won’t be a part of the big celebration? You still have the option of throwing a local post-wedding party with friends and family who were not able to attend your nuptials. More a ordable is is everyone’s favourite reason to opt for a destination wedding. Not only do you get a beautiful backdrop for your ceremony and reception, but it all comes at a much lower cost than hosting your wedding at a traditional hotel or banquet hall venue! Due to your limited guest list, the total you spend on per person costs is dramatically lower. You’ll then be able to restructure your budget to splurge on photography and videography, decor, or even keep the savings for the future. Destination weddings are quickly becoming a practical option for couples who want to celebrate their special day in a unique and intimate way. Progress TravelPlus o ers planning and coordination expertise and will help make your destination wedding vision a reality. For planning and coordination, from A to Z, the Progress TravelPlus team can cover it all, wherever you want to be married! Why do you want a destination wedding? Ajax Pickering News Advertiser Fall 2016 One of the most memorable parts of your wedding is the reception. Finding a venue that meets all of your needs without breaking your budget doesn’t have to be a challenge. By considering these aspects for each venue you’ll be ahead of the game! 1. Food & Services ere are so many questions to ask when looking for the perfect venue: What does the venue o er?; How involved is the venue with the coordination of your day?; Does the venue stand behind the food and service that they advertise?; Is a menu tasting included with your booking?; Will you be able to sample the choices and make changes or substitutions to the menu?; How are dietary restrictions handled? Be sure to ask for referrals from people who have tried the food and witnessed the service rst-hand. e most honest review will come from someone who has attended, or even hosted, a wedding at that location. e Ajax Convention Centre has an outstanding reputation for top notch service and delectable food. eir in-house team of chefs create personalized menus all the time and are fully equipped to accommodate dietary restrictions of all kinds! A menu tasting is included with each wedding package and guests are always amazed by the menu choices and the quality of food. 2.Cost When looking at a reception venue be sure to ask what is included in the price quoted and what extra charges may pop up on your bill. Some venues charge extra for cutting the cake and chair covers. You may also want to ask if there is a time of year or day of the week that is o ered at a discounted rate. Remember to nd out if the HST and gratuity fees are already included in the package price or if they are additional? Be very aware of that a price per person that does not already include the tax and gratuity will be a much higher cost per person than advertised – usually 25% to 30% more. If you’re shopping for venues based solely on the costs involved make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Wedding packages o ered by the Ajax Convention Centre are all-inclusive – which means tax and gratuities are included in the price. Also included in the advertised price is the room rental, the cake cutting, chair covers, the complete open bar, hors d’oeuvres, late night bu et and many other features. ere are no hidden fees and the list of available upgrades is short because so much is already included in each package. 3. Location ings to be aware of when choosing a venue include: Is the venue easily accessible to your guests?; Are there nearby hotel amenities for both out of town guests as well as local guests?; Does the location allow for an onsite ceremony to cut the travel time down for your guests?; Is parking included or is it an additional fee?; Does the venue include maps for your invitations?; Is the venue accessible to cabs or driving services? e Ajax Convention Centre is conveniently located right o highway 401 at the Salem Road exit. Within the same parking lot, there is a Hilton Garden Inn and a Homewood Suites by Hilton – two fabulous hotels – to make travel arrangements simple and a safe night possible for everyone. Discounted rates are available to clients of the Ajax Convention Centre and maps for invitations are available from all locations. ere is also ample parking at no additional cost.
