Twelve hearty souls decided an eating contest was a great way to kill a few minutes while attending the second annual Pickering Food Truck Festival. Starting at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7, six contestants lined up for the doughnut-eating contest, followed immediately by six in the corn-on-the-cob eating contest. At about 7 p.m., a pasta-eating-without-utensils contest was held. The first eating contest involved chowing down 14 Tiny Tom’s sugar doughnuts with- out having anything to drink. The contestants had to finishing eating all 14 before saying they were done. Radio personality Gary Bernarde urged the contestants to “own that doughnut.” Hemant Sharma of Pickering was the doughnut-eating winner. When asked why he took part, Mr. Sharma said, “Why not, right? We have a beautiful day and they’re giving away free food.” He entered the contest as soon as it was announced, he added. Kristen Gallacher of Pickering said, “I don’t know” when asked why she entered. She thinks she managed to eat about eight doughnuts. Shawn Daoust of Pickering said he took part “for my family, to try to make them proud.” One who was proud was his daughter Lily, 5, who said of her Dad, “He’s the best.” During the contest, when asked if they regretted taking part, two raised their hands. Mr. Daoust was one of two who raised their hands to express regret. “I needed a drink.” For the corn-on-the-cob contest, Mr. Ber- narde said “no tooth picks and no drinking” were among the few rules. Kristina Daley was in Pickering all the way from Jamaica. “It seemed fun, so I thought I’d try.” She reported she did enjoy taking part. Richard Poirier of Toronto was the winner and he took part “for fun. It’s a gorgeous day. Why not?” And, “corn is pretty easy to eat,” he added. The festival was held at the Esplanade Park over the weekend and drew thousands. There were a couple of dozen food trucks offering everything from jerk chicken, rotis and tacos to poutine and corn on the cob, accompanied with CORNdiments. Uday Jaswal, sworn in Tuesday morning in Whitby, said the service has to be responsive in addressing the kinds of tensions that have led to open conflict between communities and police in the United States. “I think policing in general is challenged right now. Public trust and confidence is a big issue,” said Deputy Chief Jaswal. Durham’s growing and diverse population “requires us to be innovative and rethink some of the services that we’re providing to residents,” he said. “It’s about the way we police -- it’s how we reach out to diverse communities. I think it has to be pro-active.” Durham’s new deputy joined Ottawa police in 1995 and in 2013 attained the rank of superintendent. In Ottawa he gained experience in uniform, investigative and administrative functions, according to a brief bio provided by Durham police. In Ottawa he was an active volunteer, most recently with an agency dedicated to youth services. A swearing-in ceremony Aug. 2 in the Dur- ham regional council chambers saw Deputy Chief Jaswal take his oaths in front of a pub- lic gallery packed with Durham police offi- cers, members of the police services board and family and friends, including his wife and daughter. Police Chief Paul Martin presented the deputy with his badge. “Well, deputy, it’s official,” the chief said. “Welcome to the Durham Regional Police Service.” Chief Martin said the new deputy arrives at a time when Durham police are working to strengthen ties with the community they serve. “Policing has become much more compli- cated. These are very different times,” Chief Martin said. “All we have to do is look south of the border for evidence of that.” Maintaining public confidence and avoid- ing the emergence of overt racial tensions present an ongoing challenge, the chief said. “We cannot for a second take that for granted,” he said. Among Deputy Chief Jaswal’s responsi- bilities will be operations support, which includes criminal investigations. His appointment means that Durham once again has two deputies; Chris Fer- nandes, a veteran Toronto cop, joined Dur- ham in January 2015. Fostering trust with community key goal for Durham police’s new deputy chief Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland OSHAWA -- Uday Jaswal, a former superintendent with the Ottawa Police Services, was sworn in as a new Durham Regional Police deputy chief during a recent cer- emony in the council chambers of Durham Region headquarters. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Au g u s t 1 0 , 2 0 1 6 5 P Direct Access 905.420.4660 General Enquiries 905.683.2760 Service Disruption 1.877.420.4666 Customer Care Centre 905.683.7575 (24 hour line) customercare@pickering.ca pickering.ca @cityofpickering@cityofpickering Date Meeting/Location Time August24 CommitteeofAdjustment CityHall–MainCommitteeRoom 7:00pm Allmeetingsareopentothepublic. Well, all that work not only created construction jobs, it has resulted in the potential for 700 new jobs at the super mall. The mall is currently on the tail end of a $230-million renovation and expansion with grand opening ceremonies sched- uled for Sept. 29. With that date on the horizon, the Oshawa Centre is hosting a career exhi- bition on Saturday, Aug. 13 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The job fair which will include a mix of stores and restaurants looking to hire up to 700 full- and part- time workers. Existing businesses and 30 new commercial ventures will be looking for help at the fair. A little over 15 months ago, statistics revealed an alarming trend in Oshawa- area unemployment figures, especially in the youth employment sector. Things were looking bleak then but with the announcement of the job fair, it could take a turn for the better. The national numbers showed Can- ada lost 19,700 in April 2015 but the unemployment rate remained at 6.8. In the Oshawa census metropolitan area, which includes Whitby and Clarington, the unemployment rate rose from 7.5 to 7.9 per cent. In 2015, the Oshawa CMA had the fourth highest unemployment rate in the country with Windsor sitting in the top spot at 11.5 per cent. What this meant in 2015 was a loss of 1,700 full-time and 300 part-time jobs for young people. In the same time period, workers 25 and over saw a gain of 2,500 jobs in the Oshawa CMA. This is an uncertain time in Oshawa, and Durham Region, given the cloudy climate in the automotive sector. Unifor, the auto workers’ union, is in negotia- tions to hammer out a new contract with General Motors and help land another product for Oshawa. If these talks fail, GM could potentially cease to produce vehicles in its Oshawa facilities. And if that were to happen, upwards of 5,600 full-time jobs with benefits would be lost just at GM alone. More jobs would dis- appear at GM’s feeder facilities located across Durham Region. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen. Job creation is never easy to accom- plish. Governments at all levels attempt to make Durham Region an attractive place to locate but employment num- bers rarely spike in a positive manner. They tend to gradually increase. On the negative side however, if a big employer leaves, unemployment numbers spike immediately. There’s no happy medium. While 700 part-time and full-time positions, many likely without bene- fits or pensions, don’t seem like a huge number, it is a start on the road to more employment opportunities locally. And that’s not a bad prospect. Couple that positive news with the prospect of GM and Unifor reaching an equitable contract resolution, keeping work in the community, and 2016 could end on a more positive note than 2015. Publication Sales Agreement #40052657 columnBelize archeology dig leads way to a keen global perspective for Trent University Durham student For many people, a trip to Belize is characterized by a stay in a hotel with beautiful beaches and cold drinks served at a swim-up bar. Thanks to the Belize Field School, organized by Trent University’s Depart- ment of Anthropology, I recently had the opportunity to get to know this beautiful country in a much different way. Work- ing alongside Dr. Helen Haines, assistant professor at Trent University Durham this past Spring from May to mid-June, I stayed in lovely little house, which would be the equivalent of the Belizean version of a B&B or a hostel. I first heard of the Ka’Kabish Archaeo- logical Research Project (KARP) when I was looking to transfer into the Trent Anthropology program from another university. For me, it was an opportuni- ty to study more than just archaeologi- cal theory, but to experience first-hand the concepts that I had been hearing and learning about in the classroom. The chance to gain real-life archaeologi- cal experience in my field of study and to include real field-work on my resume is one that I couldn’t pass up. And, my time in Belize also counts towards a school credit, which is the icing on the cake. The experience as a whole was very ful- filling. For five weeks we worked Mon- day to Friday from 8:30 am until 4 p.m.; shoveling, troweling, screening, map- ping or setting units. On the weekends, we had the chance to go into the town of Orange Walk to ‘reconnect’ with the digital world again and share our photos and discoveries on social media or just to send a quick email to our friends and family. Throughout the visit, Dr. Haines was kind enough to organize some day trips to see a few other archaeological projects in northern Belize. We were taken to see the Lamanai Site, La Milpa, and spent a day at the beach of Corazol before seeing its ruins. But one of the highlights of the trip for me was the people that I met in the remote village of Indian Church. The warm and genuine villagers, their cul- ture and lifestyle sharpened my perspec- tive of Belize and of the importance of global travel as a whole. Simply put, the experience was an extraordinary opportunity, lend- ing way to not only practical expe- rience to set the stage for my future career but also incredible person- al memories that will last a lifetime. -- Marielle Filion is a third-year anthropology student at Trent University Durham marielle Filion Guest columnist du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Au g u s t 1 0 , 2 0 1 6 7 P For comments or concerns visit: www.ajaxrotary.org For more information on Pickering Ribfest 2017 visit: www.pickeringribfest.com Rotary Clubs of Ajax & Pickering Rotary Clubs of Ajax & Pickering Please be advised that the Ajax Ribfest held this past weekend at 180 Westney Road South, Ajax, was NOT IN ANY WAY affiliated with the Rotary Clubs of Ajax or Pickering. AUGUST13,9-5AUGUST14,11-4 SAVETHEDATE A young woman was driving a gold Acura on Aug. 2 at around 5 p.m. when it pulled out to make a left-hand turn from Krosno onto Bayly in front of a dump truck, according to wit- nesses. The victim, who was dead at the scene, has been identified by friends as Nadia Mohabir, 19, from Ajax. Two other passengers, one male and one female, both 23, suffered serious injuries. “It just looked like it had been put through a crusher,” Ms. Parnell recalls of the car. “It was terrible and if we had a light there, it wouldn’t have happened.” A 50-year-old Whitby man driving the dump truck was not injured. At least one councillor is asking for improve- ments to traffic safety in the area. “That intersection is a tough one to get onto Bayly Street, especially if you’re heading west- bound. There’s a lot of volume of traffic there,” says Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean. Since Bayly is a Regional road, he’s asked the Region of Durham to investigate installing a traffic light. “As tragic as this is, I think it’s incumbent to keep an open mind and look at it and see if it’s possible to create a safer road,” he says. According to Regional statistics, the inter- section of Bayly and Krosno averages around two collisions per year, which is not consid- ered high. A majority of the collisions in the area occur at the Liverpool Road and Bayly intersection, which averages 20 per year, and the Pickering GO Station. Bayly sees around 21,720 vehicles per day, which is typical for a Regional type A arterial road. Krosno carries roughly 3,000 vehicles per day. The evening peak hour, from 5 to 6 p.m., experiences the highest amount of traffic, around 1,340 vehicles in the eastbound direc- tion and 1,080 vehicles in the westbound direction. “Based on the count data we currently have, it does not meet a warrant (for a traffic control signal),” says Amanda Spencer, project man- ager of road safety. Intersection counts show a low amount of vehicles turning left from Krosno, as drivers are electing to use the signalized intersections at Sandy Beach or Liverpool. Ms. Parnell is one of them. “You couldn’t pay me enough money to left turn out of here,” she says. But she still believes a traffic light is warrant- ed. Ms. Spencer confirms the Region will con- duct a new study. “To do an accurate data would require new count data,” she says. She says the counts will take place in Sep- tember. Ms. Parnell hopes Coun. McLean keeps on top of this issue, as she’s sick of seeing acci- dents, damages to nearby houses and trees, as well as dangers when it comes to people crossing. “People are jaywalking all the time. It’s dan- gerous because the traffic is horrendous and people don’t do the speed limit,” she says. Ms. Spencer acknowledged people have complained about difficulty crossing the road there and have simply asked for a pedestrian crossing in the past. She says the Region has done a count and found there are not enough pedestrians to justify the installation, nor would it be rec- ommended for a roadway such as Bayly, with speeds that are moderate to high. We are told that yet another study is to be done on the possible Pickering air- port. One study begets another study to add to what seems to be a litany of stud- ies. All of the studies come at a cost and I suspect that this cost of numerous stud- ies, dating back to the original Pickering airport announcement (late 60s early 70s), must be a substantial cost to the taxpayers of Canada, provincial taxpay- ers and even municipal taxpayers who ultimately foot the bill for all said stud- ies. If we continue to fund one study after another, eventually one will find the study that tells you what you want to hear. I find it somewhat odd that of all the studies funded by the taxpayer not one has yet to prove the need for an air- port. Yet a community-based group such as Land Over Landings is having to foot the bill for a study to show the econom- ic impact if the proposed airport lands were left protected for agriculture. Certainly some level of government should be willing to at least share the cost of a study that proves the econom- ic viability to leave the proposed airport lands as agriculture. If one throws enough rocks at a win- dow, one just might break through. Mike Borie Pickering Pokemon Go beats Harry Potter this summer To the editor: Who hasn’t heard a funny story about Pokemon Go at this point? Its appeal is widespread; it’s popularity, contagious and the phenomenon, real for a select part of the population. I knew something was up when I asked my 12-year-old goddaughter to explain what this game was actually about. Being from another planet, I actually thought she might use words. Instead, she said, “Oh yeah,” like I had just reminded her to check it out. In a matter of moments she downloaded it and away she went, literal- ly. Since I never fully got an answer to my question, I was shocked when she left our world and entered another right before my very eyes. When she got up and sudden- ly began moving toward something that I certainly couldn’t see, my first thought was, “What have I done?” Kudos to Pokemon Go creators for tap- ping into three definite facts about this generation: we are easily captivated; we no longer see distractions as distractions and we are longing for community. When you mix these conditions with the right kind of creative mind, viola – you get Pokemon Go! It’s magic at its latest. Sorry Harry Potter, Pokemon Go beat you to it this summer. Renae Jarrett Ajax Here we go again with another airport study To the editor: Re: As One study is complete, federal gov- ernment orders second study on possible Pickering Airport, news, July 24 Is it permissible to open a letter with a sigh? How many times? How many stud- ies? How much money wasted before we look for another solution? Both these studies were launched by the previous government in July 2015. We hoped the new government would can- cel them or seriously alter their mandates. Instead, here we go again. Since the late ‘60s there have been ump- teen studies all on the taxpayers’ dime. And still no business case for an airport. Governments have come and gone -- more than 20 transport ministers have had this on their plate. Hanging around their necks like the proverbial millstone is the more apt description. We don’t seek to assign blame to any government. Over almost half a centu- ry, there’s more than enough blame to go around. Rather, we’re looking for a govern- ment with vision and the guts to stand up to the few remaining dinosaurs who refuse to see the writing on the wall -- airports are failing, climate change is upon us. Time to stop studying an airport to death, stop pouring taxpayers’ money down the drain. Let’s revitalize these lands through agri- culture, agri-business and tourism -- lead- ing economic drivers. Airports are ‘60’s mentality. Let’s aim for the future, put our money and resources into agricultural innovation and green technology. But imagine how the degree of dif- ficulty in raising a child would intensify for a young parent, many without their own home, a career, a spouse or even a job. For those young parents searching for answers, desperate for help or just someone to talk to, Rose of Durham is blooming with opportunities to make the transition into parent hood and the years ahead easier and more enjoyable. The Rose of Durham is a charitable, non- profit organization that offers more than 15 free programs and services to young parents in the Durham Region including individu- al counseling, teen mom school programs, prenatal classes and parent support groups. For client Shanyce, who has a two-year- old son, the Rose of Durham made her experience into motherhood, before and after, easier and more enjoyable. “They helped me build an emotional attachment to my son through their pro- grams,” she said. “They also helped me become a better parent by giving me sup- port that is available on a regular basis.” According to Shanyce, her mother and sis- ter also used the services offered by Rose of Durham and their positive experience directed her to utilize the organization as well. Shanyce attended prenatal classes, the nobody is perfect parenting program, a breast feeding support group and individual counseling which offered coping and emo- tional support. “It’s challenging being a young parent,” she said. “Rose of Durham gives young par- Rose of Durham blooms with opportunities for young parents ents help that they may not be getting from their family and many different programs for free that they may have to pay for else where.” According to counsellor Janelle Smalls, Rose of Durham offers programs and sup- port for every stage, from prenatal to pre- school age. “We are a village, we believe in them and we give them love and support, for the first few years we are there,” she said. “We try to connect them to other supports in the com- munity and we build a support network for them to feel included and not isolated.” According to Ms. Smalls, young parents are so receptive to strategies and become more aware of what a healthy relation- ship looks like with their child after getting involved with Rose of Durham. “Many moms have moved onto college and university, started their own business- es, many have gotten married but one of best things is that as they progress as indi- viduals and reach their goals, they are able to continue working on that healthy attach- ment and relationship with their children,” she said. “You never stop learning as a par- ent and support is needed through every age.” Rose of Durham hopes to reach more and more young parents in the Durham Region. Parents ask Lakeridge Health experts about health concerns Every month local experts from Lakeridge Health field questions from Durham parents on everything from diet and nutrition, to behaviour and kids’ health. This month’s experts are pediatrician Dr. Javier Adrian Gutierrez and Dr. Daniel Ricciuto, physician lead in infection prevention and control. Q. My daughter, 5, has started waking up in the middle of the night again. Is there any way we can help her get back to sleeping through the night? -- Alexandrea, Oshawa A. You are not alone. The majority of children experience sleep prob- lems which can cause stress for both you and your child. Night awaken- ings are when a child wakes up in the middle of the night and cannot go back to sleep. Often the child will cry or call out for their parents, or physically get out of bed. One common mistake is allow- ing the child to spend the rest of the night in your bed. You should avoid this as it may cause dependency. The child should be comforted and brought back to his/her own bed. Eventually, they will learn to fall asleep by themselves. Here are some tips that I share with parents: 1. Develop a consistent bed- time routine. Bedtime routines can include: giving a bath, putting on pajamas, dimming the lights, night- time singing and story time. After- wards you can put your child in bed, give them a kiss good night and leave the room. Slowly decrease the amount of time you spend with your child before he/she falls asleep. 2. Create a welcoming sleep envi- ronment. Keep the room dark and quiet. Night lights are not recom- mended. Instead, keep the light on in the hallway with the door slight- ly open. This allows the child to go to the bathroom without the fear of the dark. You may give him/her a stuffed animal or blanket to offer a sense of comfort if your child becomes aware of separation at bedtime. I hope this helps. -- Dr. Javier Adrian Gutierrez Q. It feels like the kids are constantly getting sick. It’s hard for parents to stay employed with constantly sick kids. Is there anything we can do? -- Keely, Courtice A. As a father of three young chil- dren, I know what it’s like dealing with what seems like never-ending illnesses. Kids typically either get respiratory or gastrointestinal ill- nesses. Since almost all of these infections are viruses, antibiotics do not help and in some cases can lead to unwanted side effects. The way that kids play and interact at daycare or school makes it nearly impossible to prevent all illnesses, but there are a few things that you can do to help minimize the num- ber of infections. • It’s important to understand that viral upper respiratory tract infec- tions are common. On average, kids get about 6-8 colds/coughs per year! Coughs routinely last several weeks. • Teaching and performing good hand hygiene with soap and water or even alcohol-based hand rub several times a day and especially after using the bathroom or before meals can help to prevent many dif- ferent illnesses, including respirato- ry infections and diarrheal illnesses. • Good respiratory etiquette -- such as coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the arm instead of the hand -- can help to reduce the spread of germs. Using tissues only once and then disposing of them and per- forming hand hygiene afterwards can also prevent spreading infec- tion. • There is also some research sug- gesting that lack of sleep may lead to more viral infections -- so make sure that you and your kids are well rest- ed, especially during the “cold” sea- son. I also tell my patients about the importance of vaccines. Vaccina- tions are safest and most effective way to boost the immune system to prevent illnesses, including poten- tially life-threatening infections such as whooping cough (pertus- sis) and measles. Vaccines can also help to prevent respiratory viruses such as influenza (the flu shot is rec- ommended every year), and bacte- rial illnesses such as streptococcus pneumoniae, which is a cause of pneumonia and meningitis. Vac- cinations against rotavirus, a virus that causes diarrhea, has led to a significant decrease in the number of cases of this infection and has reduced the number of children who need to be admitted to hospital for this infection. When your children are sick, over-the-counter cough and cold remedies may be harmful in chil- dren and should not be used. If you have questions about medications for your children, please visit your healthcare provider or pharmacist. -- Dr. Daniel Ricciuto Ajax & Pickering Locations8 Salem Rd. Materials: • Three corks per boat • Rubber bands or white glue • Felt, foam or fabric for the sail • Toothpicks or wooden skewers for the mast • Stickers and other decorations • Washi tape or decorative tape for the flag Directions: Secure three corks together using either rubber bands or white glue. If using glue, allow several hours to dry before putting the boat in water. Trace the outline of a sail on felt, foam or fabric and cut out. Poke holes in the top and bottom of the sail and secure to the boat using a toothpick or skewer. You can simply wedge the mast between the corks or add some glue for more stability. Decorate your boat with stickers, glitter, paint and whatever else strikes your fancy. Use a small piece of washi tape or decorative tape to top the mast with a flag. -- Jillian Follert has worked as a journalist in Durham Region for 12 years and is passionate about telling local stories. KIRKLAND, Lara Anne (Nee Fowler) January 14 1982 - July 26 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Lara Kirkland at her home in Brooklin, Ontario. She was much loved by her husband Bruce, daughter Dahlia, parents Bill and Jocelyne, sister Sophie Trimble and husband Mike, in-laws James and Barbara Kirkland and Bruce's sister Lorna Justice and husband James and Lara's niece and nephew Katie and Liam. Lara was born in London, England before moving with her family to Ajax, Ontario at age 6. She attended Southwood Park Elementary and Ajax High Schools, University of Windsor and Durham College before entering the field of real estate marketing. Lara developed deep and lasting friendships at every stage of her school and working lives through her empathy, humour, open-mindedness and easy-going approach to life. Her warm smile, gregariousness and generous disposition attracted all who met her. Lara was diagnosed with brain cancer in February 2011 and endured multiple surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments before learning in early 2016 that it had spread. She showed remarkable strength, patience and grace throughout her life and during her illness. Lara enjoyed the outdoors, with camping and hiking her particular favourites, sharing her joy with her friends and family. The arrival of daughter Dahlia 3 years ago brought great happiness to Lara and Bruce in the midst of her illness. She will provide a constant reminder of Lara's warmth and spirit. A bench will be installed in her memory on the Ajax Waterfront. A celebration of her life will be arranged at a later date. Contributions may be made in her memory to Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre, Oshawa @ www.hearthplace.org STANOJEVICH, Katrina Lauren - Passed away at home in her sleep at the age of 27 years on August 4, 2016. Mona was born and raised in the beautiful market town of Salisbury, England on 1 February 1923. She was predeceased by her parents Edward King and Marcelle Fremaux (France), her sister Joscelyn (John) Gilder and brother David (Molly) and, by her son Julien who died in 1976 at age twenty two. She leaves behind her children John (Dagny), Larry (Julia), Suzanne (Richard) and Lucienne (Philip). She was a caring grandmother to Dana, Lori, Marc, Alexander, Arthur, Réka, Lisa, Bill, Stephanie, Alicia and Tim as well as fifteen great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Mona also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews and their families in England, Scotland, France and Northern Ontario. Mona was truly a product of another, gentler time. She did not drive a car and never in her life wore a pair of pants or shorts and last wore a swim suit the day war was declared in August 1939. At that same time she had just completed high school and went immediately to help the war effort. At age eighteen, she went to work at the headquarters of Southern Command at Wilton, Wiltshire. She toiled there four long years doing many tasks included writing correspondence for General Burnett-Stewart (aide-de-camp to King George V). Mona was so dedicated to studying German language in her spare time that, following government fluency tests, was offered a position by the Foreign Office at Whitehall that required her to sign the Official Secrets Act. She was sent to Bletchley Park where, for the last eighteen months of the war, she worked in the linguistic section of the famous code breaking facility that helped end the war. After the war, and a hastily arranged wedding, Mona became a WWII "war bride" after being swept off her feet by a dashing young French- Canadian paratrooper named Adrien Rossignol. Mona settled into her new country where she remained the rest of her life. After the birth of their five children, Mona was left to raise her family alone. Her life was difficult but she managed to raise her children with determination, kindness and patience that was bolstered by her strong belief in the Roman Catholic faith. As her children grew to adulthood, Mona began a twenty year career at McLean-Hunter publications. She pursued her intellectual interests with great passion and remarkable powers of concentration. Mona mastered sewing and four types of needlework, was an expert baker, grew her own vegetables. She loved studying languages, most recently tackling Russian. Her library of over two thousand books was dominated by gardening, needlework and a remarkable collection of over 800 cookbooks. As a longtime member of her community in Bay Ridges and the Holy Redeemer Parish, Mona was blessed with the caring support of her neighbors and friends in the Pickering area. After a four year battle with age and time, Mona finally took her last breath with her daughter Suzanne by her side. During those last years, despite great challenges with the complete loss of independence and autonomy, being wheelchair dependent and though almost totally blind and very hard of hearing, Mona's intellectual functioning, curiosity and memory remained entirely intact to the very end. She continued to have a sense of humour and sharp wit until her last day. The family greatly appreciates the loving care provided by her companion Kathy Ferguson and all the fine staff at Cedarvale Lodge in Keswick, Ontario. Mona will be deeply missed. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church (796 Eyer Drive, Pickering) on Thursday, August 11 at 11am. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery (355 Taunton Road, Whitby) arrangements entrusted to McEACHNIE FUNERAL HOME (905-428-8488) Online condolences may be signed at www.mceachniefuneral.ca VENDORS WANTED DURHAM CRAFT & GIFT SHOW Durham College 2000 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa October 21, 22 & 23, 2016 Your one-stop shopping for ultimate gift giving this Holiday Season For Booth Information Call Susan 905.215.0444 or Email: sfleming@durhamregion.com DELIVERY ROUTES AVAILABLE:AJAX/PICKERING AE464 77 Falby Court 42 papers AV335 Styles Cres, Mansbridge Cres, Abraham Court 34 papers AV350 Gillett Dr, Luce Dr, Todhunter Cres 35 papers AV362 Snowling Dr, Bellotti Cres 52 papers AV363 Snowling Dr, Brider Cres 50 papers AL826 Rolfe Ln, Nayor Ln, Pootle Ln, Annable Ln 28 papers AQ407 Knowles St, Galea Dr, Clarepark Crt 33 papers AQ409 Horton St 34 papers AX806 Ainsbury Ave, Weatherby Ave, Pickett St 47 papers If you are interested in a Route that isn’t listed please call (905)683-5117 and have your name put on a waiting list.
