JACKY’S PLACE YOUTH
SHELTER OPENS IN AJAX
p.5 Teen accused in Dunbarton knife attack returns to court p.14 Special section: Food and wine
AJAX — Jacky’s Place, a transitional home for at-risk, homeless youth for up to one
year, is operated by Durham Youth Housing and Support Services, and celebrated its
grand opening. Charlene Saroyan’s mother had owned the house and the shelter is
named after her.

DURHAM -- It’s not always easy to transi-
tion from one phase of life to another.
That’s where Jacky’s Place comes in.
The home is a new initiative of the Dur-
ham Youth Housing and Support Servic-
es, which will provide transitional hous-
ing to youths between 16 and 24 years.

The house will serve as an “intermediate
step” for youths going from homelessness to
having a place to stay, said shelter manager
Adrianna Vanderneut at the opening of the
facility.
Located on Kings Crescent in Ajax, the
home will house up to five youths at a time.
Jacky’s Place is affiliated with Joanne’s
House, an emergency youth shelter also on
Kings Crescent.
Ms. Vanderneut said those who will stay at
Jacky’s Place must first complete a 30-day stay
at Joanne’s House.
As for prospective residents at Jacky’s
“maybe they’re missing some life skills,” Ms.
Vanderneut noted, such as not being able to
budget.
“We’ll work on a plan identifying areas they
feel they are lacking. It could be cooking skills
or getting back into school,” she said.
Ms. Vanderneut said in an interview the
residents “will come from a variety of referral
services.”
She described the house as “semi-individu-
al care.”
Ms. Vanderneut or a caseworker will work
with each resident to come up with a plan.
“We’ll come here and see how it’s going.”
Setting up the facility has been a goal of the
DYHSS for some time, Ms. Vanderneut noted.
“The idea always existed. It was our goal to
open a much larger place, a 50-bed transi-
tional place. It was a huge dream,” she said.
Fundraising drives were held and once the
“money was in the bank”, the organization
pursued a smaller dream.
“It was a long time coming.”
The organization receives funding from
Durham Region.
Youths staying at Jacky’s will pay rent and
how much depends on their circumstanc-
es. Someone receiving Ontario Works would
pay $376 a month, while someone receiv-
ing Ontario Disability Support Program will
pay $479. A resident with income other than
social assistance will have their payments
assessed on a case-by-case basis.
While living there, food, utilities, Internet
and TV costs are covered.
“They have very few expenses while living
here, other than rent,” Ms. Vanderneut noted.
She added there’s a great need for transi-
tional and semi-independent housing for
homeless youth in Durham.
“The youth we service often have difficul-
ty finding a place to live due to the shortage
of affordable housing. If they’re able to find
housing, they have difficulty maintaining it
for a number of reasons -- they’re on a lim-
ited income, they have no experience with
budgeting, and lack many of the necessary
life skills required to live independently. This
results in the youth being unable to manage
living independently and thus they return
to our emergency youth shelter, Joanne’s
House,” Ms. Vanderneut said.
Jacky’s Place is named for Jacky Bearance
(Saroyan), who owned the home prior to it
being sold to DYHSS.
Charlene Saroyan said her mother bought
the house with the idea of helping Charlene’s
brother, who was struggling with addiction
issues. The idea was to keep him busy doing
renovations to the home.
“It worked for a while,” Ms. Saroyan said. “It
kept him busy for a while.”
She and her sister Julie-anne wrote a let-
ter to the organization asking the home be
named after their mother.
In their letter, the Saroyans noted, “Our
mother is one of those very special angels
in the world. Her vocation was nursing and
this was her greatest passion and immense
source of pride. She nursed for over 45 years,
touching, caring and shaping people’s lives.
She considered herself a “practical nurse”
and she cared deeply about her community,
the people in it and that she could help. She
believed in preventative health, and that it
started in the community.”
Ms. Saroyan said during the opening cer-
emonies, “We’re honoured you called the
place Jacky’s Place. She was an ordinary
woman with an extraordinary life. We’re hon-
oured to carry on her legacy.”
For those looking for information on stay-
ing at Jacky’s Place, contact Ms. Vanderneut

Teen accused in Dunbarton High knife assaults completes assessment
DURHAM -- A teenaged girl accused of
injuring several people during a knife attack
at Dunbarton High School in February has
completed a psychiatric assessment, court
heard on July 19.
The teen, whose identity is protect-
ed under the Youth Criminal Justice Act,
appeared in the prisoner’s box in hand-
cuffs and said nothing during her pres-
ence in the Oshawa courtroom. Her lawyer,
Tom Balka, told the court his client com-
pleted the assessment and they now must
wait between five and six weeks to view the
report. “It’s important for all of us to review
it,” Mr. Balka said in court.
A girl was taken into custody by officers
responding to a series of attacks Feb. 23 at
Dunbarton, during which witnesses said a
girl armed with two knives made her way
through the hallways, slashing at victims.
She was restrained by staff members.
Five students and two staff members at
the Pickering school were hurt; none of the
injuries was life-threatening. The school
reopened the next day. A 14 year old was
charged with nine counts of assault with a
weapon, six counts of assault causing bodi-
ly harm, assault and possession of a dan-
gerous weapon.
The matter returns to court on Aug. 16.

An MPP for Whitby-Oshawa since 2006,
Christine Elliott’s new role as Ontario’s
first patient ombudsman may, in many
ways, be a more significant and perhaps
a more satisfying position in ensuring
that patients’ concerns are addressed
within the Ontario health system.
Ms. Elliott, 61, began her new position
on July 1. Ironically enough, the long-
time Conservative was appointed to the
$220,000-a-year job by Liberal health
minister Eric Hoskins. Kudos to Mr.
Hoskins for eschewing politics in order
to appoint the best person to advocate
for patients in Ontario.
And, his decision to appoint Ms. Elliott
was clearly the right one.
She comes to the position as a former
Conservative health critic and has served
as director or has sat on the boards of
Durham Mental Health Services, the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and
the Lakeridge Health Whitby Founda-
tion. She and her late husband, Jim Fla-
herty, co-founded the Abilities Centre
in Whitby, which provides programs for
people with disabilities.
“When this position came along, I was
really excited,” said Ms. Elliott, who has
always been interested in health issues.
“I thought, ‘Well, if you want to change
things, you have to step up to the plate’.”
So, what is it that a patient ombudsman
does? When patients aren’t finding suc-
cess with formal complaints to their hos-
pital or care facility, they can go to Ms.
Elliott, and she will decide which cases to
investigate. The role encompasses hospi-
tals, long-term-care homes and the prov-
ince’s community care access centres.
She will also file annual reports high-
lighting trends and problem areas for
patients.
As the first patient ombudsman, Ms.
Elliott has a lot of leeway to define the
position in her five-year term. But she’s
being cagey about her plans.
“It’s too early to say. We need a couple
of months of calls before we really know
(the issues),” she says.
But, make no mistake -- the calls will
come. One such area is the CCAC (Com-
munity Care Access Centres) system,
which has long been a source of com-
plaints for patients. The $2.5-billion sys-
tem is plagued with issues such as long
wait times for long-term health services.
With an aging population in Ontar-
io, another source of complaints will no
doubt be long-term care homes. The
complaint process for the homes works
through a central office in the Ministry
of Health and Long-Term Care. In 2014,
they received 3,300 complaints, of which
around 1,810 were investigated.
Ontarians will be watching, and hop-
ing, that the patient ombudsman is not
yet another layer of government bureau-
cracy, but one that actually finds solu-
tions for patients who are at their most
vulnerable when seeking help in the
Ontario health system. That said, howev-
er, Ms. Elliott has the experience to take
on this position and make it work well for
Ontarians.
We wish her every success.
our opinion
Christine Elliott’s appointment as
patient ombudsman the right move
Continuing education 2.0:

column
Not so long ago, the term con-
tinuing education, or con
ed as it’s commonly known,
conjured up images of retir-
ees taking classes in French cooking
or still-life painting. But these days, a
quick look at Durham College’s fall 2016
con ed course calendar -- released last
week -- shows just how far con ed has
truly come.
While a wide array of leisure and per-
sonal development courses are still
offered, more than 90 per cent of DC’s
school of continuing education courses
are academic. The school offers more
than 85 part-time academic programs,
giving numerous opportunities for stu-
dents to balance their lifestyles while
earning program credentials, including
diplomas and certificates, to upgrade
or augment their existing skills or work
toward a new career.
This evolution of the college’s con ed
programming is one more way in which
DC is putting the student experience
first. By offering programs in a variety
of accessible and flexible study options,
we’re giving all students the ability to
pursue their educational goals without
necessarily having to set foot in a tra-
ditional classroom. This includes offer-
ing many of our con ed programs online
because while evening and week-
end classes work for many, they often
remain out-of-reach for single par-
ents without childcare, members of the
’sandwich generation‘ whose time is not
always their own, or professionals jug-
gling full-time work with schooling.
So what does online learning look
like these days? At DC, it’s the same
high-quality courses and programs as
our in-class offerings, made available
fully online so students can make their
learning fit their schedules and not the
other way around. Our online instruc-
tors are subject-matter experts who pro-
vide a wide range of activities to engage
learners, including discussion boards,
videos, interactive practice, and links
to relevant web resources. Our focus is
on assessments that emulate the real-
world skills that employers are looking
for, such as strong interpersonal skills
and critical thinking. Consistent com-
munication within the course ensures
learners feel supported and connected
to the course content, their instructor,
and their peers.
Recently, in response to feedback
from prospective students, DC took
our social services worker and mental
health nursing con ed programs online
and we are thrilled to see them finding
a new audience in this format. As we
move toward the college’s 50th anniver-
sary in 2017, DC’s con ed team is con-
tinuing to encourage feedback from our
community -- we want to know what
courses or programs would inspire or
enable others to continue their educa-
tion. Contact us at coned@durhamcol-
lege.ca or 905.721.3052 to let us know.
We also offer the ability to live chat with
a con ed representative for more infor-
mation by visiting www.durhamcollege.

DURHAM -- One-pot pasta primavera. The cooking time varies according to the
pasta you use.
Simple summer recipes
for easy living in Durham
Becoming a father has taught me a lot
about myself as a person. Lessons in love,
patience and understanding pop up on a
daily basis. None more true, however, than
time. Time with my wife and son, time with
friends and family, time to reflect, work
time, down time, play time, nap time and, of
course, time to eat. Parenthood is all about
managing and controlling time.
For this I have started to rely heavily
on quick and easy, one-pot dishes. They
require minimal effort and minimal clean-
up to provide you with maximum time to
spend doing the more important and more
fulfilling things in life. Here are two of my
favourite recipes to help get you in and out
of the kitchen quickly so you can catch all
those precious moments with loved ones.
One-Pot Pasta Primavera
This dish is the essence of a timesaver.
Throw everything into a pot, put it on the
heat, give it a stir and let it cook. The best
part is that all the flavour from the ingredi-
ents you use gets sucked right into the noo-
dle as it cooks. Use whatever kind of pasta
you like, I used rigatoni, just take note of the
cooking time allotted for your pasta because
each one is different.
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: approx. 12 minutes (varying)
Serves: 4-6
450 grams dry pasta
one half a large onion, small dice
2 pints cherry tomatoes, cut in half
3 cloves garlic, chopped fine
1 red chili, sliced or 1 tsp dried chili flakes
(optional)
1 bunch fresh basil leaves, torn
4 tbsp olive oil
4 cups water or chicken stock
200 g (approx. 1 cup) bocconcini cheese
2 tsp salt
black pepper to taste
Parmesan cheese, for serving
1. Place all ingredients in a large pot, stir
together and set over high heat.
2. Bring to a boil and set a timer for your
pasta depending on package recommenda-
tions. Leave on high heat for about 1 min-
ute, then turn heat down a touch to medi-
um-high, stirring occasionally.
3. Once it’s done, remove from heat and
let sit for 5 minutes to allow any remaining
liquid to cool and absorb and become the
sauce.
4. Serve hot with plenty of Parmesan cheese
and some crusty bread for sopping up any
remaining sauce.
TIP: For a really stringy, gooey, cheesy
pasta, try stirring the bocconcini cheese in
right at the end of cooking.
Fresh 5-Minute 5-Berry Sorbet
Store-bought sorbets are often wrought
with unnecessary ingredients, preserva-
tives, fillers and excess sugar. Sure, it’s con-
venient, but why not go the extra mile and
make you’re own much healthier version at
home in just a few minutes?
This recipe is a real timesaver when the
kids want something sweet, but you want
them to have something nutritious as well.
With just five minutes, three ingredients
and one appliance, you’ve got an instant
fresh-tasting sorbet that the kids will love
and you will be proud to serve to them.
I typically use frozen fruit because I always
have some in the freezer, but if you have
fresh fruit you can just throw in about 9 or
10 ice cubes to compensate. I used a four-
berry blend of blueberry, strawberry, rasp-
berry, blackberries and cherries but try
using whatever kind of fruits you and your
family enjoy.
Serves: 4-6
2 and one-half cups (300 g) frozen mixed
fruit/berries
three-quarters cup of milk
2 tbsp sugar
1. Combine all ingredients in a blender.
2. Start the blender on low and work your
way up to a high speed.
3. You may need to scrape down the sides of
your blender a couple times.
4. Do not overmix in the blender, as soon as
it’s come together, it’s done.
5. Serve immediately.
Tip: You can substitute the milk for a fruit
juice like orange or pineapple for those who
are lactose intolerant.
Berry fun facts: Berries are high in antioxi-
dants, probiotics, fibre and vitamin C, but
they are also known to help deter diabetes,
Parkinson’s disease and arthritis.

FOCUS ON COMMUNITYBerry season in full swing in Durham
Versatile fruit can be
enjoyed in many ways
Ontario’s berry season begins with straw-
berries in June and July, followed by rasp-
berries ripening from July to September.
Enjoy berries on their own, add them to
salads, breakfast cereal and yogurt or create
delicious desserts like this trifle from the
Ontario Berry Growers Association.
For a fresh strawberry taste, try this sim-
ple strawberry gelato. Heat 1 cup of sugar
and 1 1/2 cups water until sugar dissolves.
Combine 3 cups pureed strawberries, 2
tbsp. finely chopped lemon zest, and 3 tbsp.
fresh lemon juice with cooled sugar mix-
ture. Freeze until firm.
Raspberries are great paired with many
foods, including chocolate, fish, chicken,
meats, or lamb.
An easy raspberry vinaigrette can be used
to dress salads or vegetables, or to marinate
grilled meats or fish.
Make your own raspberry vinegar by
soaking 3 cups of fresh raspberries in 1 1/2
cups of vinegar. Let sit for 1/2 hour. Strain
vinegar by pushing raspberries with the
back of a large spoon against the strainer.
In a small bowl, whisk 1/4 cup of the rasp-
berry vinegar, 1 clove minced garlic, 1 clove
shallot minced, and 1 tbsp. of rosemary
finely chopped. Slowly whisk in 1 cup of
fruity olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

about berries and farm locations in your

Fresh Berry Trifle
Ingredients: 2 cups vanilla wafers (about
45 wafers), broken into pieces
2 tbsp. orange juice
3 cups fresh Ontario berries
2 pkg. vanilla instant pudding
3 cups cold milk
1 pkg. white chocolate, melted
3 cups thawed whipped topping
Directions
Place broken wafers into 3-L glass serving
dish; sprinkle with orange juice.
Top with layers of berries.
Prepare the pudding mixes as directed on
pkg., reducing milk to 3 cups.
As pudding begins to thicken, beat in
chocolate with wire whisk until well blend-
ed.
Gently stir in 1-1/2 cups of the whipped
topping; spoon over the layer of berries.
Top with the remaining 1-1/2 cups
whipped topping and additional fresh ber-
ries for garnish. Cover. Refrigerate for at
least 30 minutes or overnight.
Editor’s note: Substitute vanilla wafers
with 3 cups of angel food cake cubes.

A hearty cold salad to enjoy
on a hot summer day
By Habeeb Salloum
According to historians, the lentil was
one of the first food plants to be brought
under cultivation by man in the Middle
East. In that part of the world where civi-
lization began, this legume has been a part
of the diet for millennia.
As a food, only bread and rice are
believed to have been on the human menu
for a longer period.
Lentils continue after thousands of years
to be a major part of the diet in the Middle
East.
Growing up on the farm in southwest
Saskatchewan, none of our neighbours
had ever tasted let alone heard of lentils.
Yet our family thrived on it since my par-
ents, when they immigrated, brought this
pulse with them. Strange as it may seem,
today Saskatchewan is the largest exporter
of lentils in the world.
This lentil salad is a vegetarian food par
excellence that puts meat dishes to shame.
Lentil Salad
Serves from 8 to 10
1 cup green or brown lentils, washed
6 cups water
5 tbsp. olive oil
5 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 bunch green onions, chopped
2 large tomatoes, diced1/2-inch cubes
1 cup cooked chickpeas (canned ok)
1 cup finely chopped parsley
1 large red bell pepper, finely chopped
1 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. pepper
Place lentils and water in a saucepan,
then bring to boil. Cover and cook over
medium heat until tender (about 20 min-
utes), but still intact and slightly firm, then
drain and allow to cool, saving water for
soup if desired. In a salad bowl, add the
lentils then gently combine the remaining
ingredients.
Serve immediately.
DURHAM -- For millennia, lentils have been a diet staple in the Middle East.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH,
THE WORKER
O Glorious, St. Joseph, model of all
those who are devoted to labor,
obtain for me the grace to work
conscientiously, putting the call of
duty above my natural inclinations, to
work with gratitude and joy, in a
spirit of penance for the remission of
my sins, considering it an honor to
employ and develop by means of
labor the gifts received from God, to
work with order, peace, moderation
and patience, without ever shrinking
from weariness and difficulties, to
work above all with purity of
intention and detachment from self,
having always death before my eyes
and the account that I must render of
time lost, of talents wasted, of good
omitted, of vain complacency in
success, so fatal to the work of God.
All for Jesus, all through Mary, after
your example, O Patriarch, St.
Joseph. Such shall be my watchword
in life and in death. Amen.

MemorialScholarshipin2016!
The $1,000 scholarship requires participation in minor hockey within
the Ajax community while encouraging strong academic achievement
and active involvement in the community.
Given continued growth in the value of the fund, a $1,000 donation
was also made to “Their Opportunity” in June 2016 to further support
youth hockey programs in Ajax/Pickering.
