Nine ribbers will fire up their grills at Pickering Ribfest to serve ribs, chicken, burgers and more at the ninth annual event running from June 3 to 5. “It’s truly a community event and it’s extremely popular,” says Lon Harnish, Pickering Ribfest chairman. More than 70,000 visitors attended last year’s Ribfest, which is put on by both the Ajax and Pickering Rotary Clubs. “All the money that’s raised goes back into the community,” says Mr. Harnish. The event will feature an open-air mar- ket, a midway, entertainment and live music, including rock, jazz, blues and country. “The music is top notch,” says Mr. Har- nish. Musicians include Eagles cover band Hotel California and Beatles cover band The Caverners. Organizers work hard to make the event environmentally friendly; contain- ers, cups and even cutlery are recyclable or compostable. “I would say most of it gets diverted to compost or recycled,” says Mr. Harnish. Ribfest goers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or make financial donations to support the St. Pauls On-the-Hill Community Food Bank and the Salvation Army of Ajax and Pickering. It’s all taking place at Esplanade Park, One The Esplanade in Pickering, from noon to 11 p.m. on both Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4, and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 5. Entry, parking and entertainment are free. People are asked to leave their pets at home. Halal foods will be available. Visit www.pickeringribfest.com for more information. A 25-year-old Whitby woman remains in a Toronto trauma centre with serious injuries following the incident, which saw a Camaro slam into the front of a Tim Hortons outlet on King Street East at about 1:10 a.m. May 29, Durham police Sergeant Bill Calder said. The unidentified victim and another woman, a 19-year-old Ajax resident, were exiting the restaurant when the eastbound Camaro left King Street and slammed into the building, causing extensive damage to the glass entry. Police said a passing tow truck operator used his tow cable to pull the car from the wall and free the Whitby woman, who was pinned against the building. The driver of the Camaro and passenger weren’t injured. Charged with two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm is Daniel Shaw, 59, of Clarington. Police continue to investigate the possibil- ity street racing led to the crash, Sgt. Calder said. PICKERING -- More than 40 per cent of commercial motor vehicles inspected Thursday in a vehicle inspection blitz in Pickering were taken off the road due to safety concerns. On May 19, Durham Regional Police offi- cers were joined by staff from Waterloo Regional Police, York Regional Police, Peel Regional Police, Toronto Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of the Envi- ronment to conduct a commercial motor vehicle inspection blitz in and around Pickering. This initiative was part of National Road Safety Week. The team inspected 68 vehi- cles and took 30 out of service for safety violations, including improper brakes and insecure loads. Ten sets of licence plates were seized and 105 charges were laid. Inspection blitz takes 30 unsafe commercial vehicles off the road in Pickering du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 2 , 2 0 1 6 6 AP OP I N I O N It’s the unknown that makes life so much fun and wonderful column A friend posted a picture on Facebook recently. It was a class photo from my Grade 5/6 split year. A cute glimpse into the past. But for me, and, I suspect, a few others, it was much more than that. It was a rabbit hole beckoning me to step inside. I don’t guess anyone of my vintage can look at a class photo from 40 odd years ago and not become prey to a host of emotions. I found myself happily scan- ning all of those eager, young faces. Even through the fog of decades they were all instantly recognizable to me. And not only that, but each seemed to want to speak to me, to tell me a story from my past. And I wanted to listen. I wanted to enter the rabbit hole. Equally intoxicating was the fact that now, given the gift of the intervening years, I was able to tell some of these children’s futures. Here was the girl who would later marry and bitterly divorce a friend of mine. Here the smiling, opti- mistic face of a girl, completely unaware that her mother would take her own life in a couple of years. Here, the boy whose handsome face already hints at the sculpted beauty that would even- tually lead him into a brief porn career. And here the cherubic, innocent grin of a mousey little girl who would, decades later, astonish me with her beauty, intellect and charm as we chatted and caught up with one another in her home, our conversation heavily punctu- ated, at least for me, by an almost life- sized oil painting of my friend reclining nude. Then, of course, there is me. Goofy, uncool, square me. I like this kid. Part of me wants to tell him about the ride that awaits him. Wants to prepare his heart for the aches and the bliss that are coming his way in a thousand different measures. Wants to tell him that there is nothing to fear but that he will prob- ably spend a lifetime figuring that out anyway. Wants to tell him that when a woman brings you into a room with a nude painting of herself on the wall, that there might be something else besides reminiscing on her mind ... you idiot. But I know that I can’t and really shouldn’t tell him anything. Because it’s the unknown that makes the ride so much fun. It’s the hurt that makes the joy feel so good. The falling down that makes the getting up so rewarding. That anyway you slice it, life is pretty won- derful. Luckily for me, I think he already knows that. -- Durham resident Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column neil crone Enter Laughing our opinionour opinion Thieves are a predictable bunch pri- marily because they’re creatures of opportunity. Give one of these special people a chance and they’ll take advantage of you. Durham Regional Police were recently called regarding a wallet being stolen from an unlocked pickup truck in Whitby. Given the warmer weather the driver left his wallet inside the pickup. Seizing the opportunity of an unlocked truck a thief made off with the wallet. A suspect was later caught on video at two different gas stations using a card from the stolen wallet. That’s another thing about thieves. They’re not only predictable but the majority of them are also stupid. There are very few places, gas stations includ- ed, that do not have security cameras these days. If you purchase something or not the business where you shopped has you recorded. A second theft from a vehicle hap- pened earlier in April. Again the thief gained access to an unlocked vehicle and made off with a Home Deport cred- it card. The victim had no idea someone had been inside his car or that his cred- it card was stolen until he got the state- ment. The card was used eight times at stores across the Greater Toronto Area, for more than $7,500 in transactions. At this time of year a lot of men stop wearing fall and winter jackets so they have nowhere to put their wallets. As a result, many leave them in their vehi- cles. Thieves know this and will fre- quently walk the streets of neighbour- hoods checking for unlocked cars. It takes seconds to find a wallet, a laptop or a cellphone — anything of value — and then they’re gone. In some cases windows are smashed or locks jimmied if a thief spots some- thing of value inside a locked car. Most of the time if a thief cannot find anything of value inside a vehicle they’ll simply steal any loose coins out of your car. Consider yourself lucky if this is all that happens. Durham Regional Police Services want to remind residents to remove all valuables from their vehicles. It’s a smart practice now, during the warm- er months, but car breakins happen 12 months a year so it’s good habit to get into. And if you see anything suspicious happening in your neighbourhood do not hesitate to call police as soon as possible. You might not only save your neighbour’s property but you could also end up saving your own. -- Metroland Media Group Ltd., Durham Region Division Warmer weather offers crimes of opportunity across Durham Region Agree? The store’s partnership with the Clothesline program and the Canadian Diabetes Association means Value Vil- lage pays to support people with diabe- tes when people donate their goods at the store’s on-site Community Donation Centre or have their donation picked up at home by the Clothesline program, whether the items reach the sales floor or not. “The program funding we receive though our partnership with Value Vil- lage allows us to support those affected by diabetes in the Pickering area,” said Lynn Obermeyer, Clothesline regional director. “Not everybody is able to donate their time or money, but by visiting the store’s Community Donation Centre or scheduling a free home pickup with our team, the simple act of donating reusable goods becomes an easy way to support our community.” For more information, call 905-420- 1445 or visit www.valuevillage.com . The first phase of the extension, from Pickering through to Harmony Road in Oshawa, is due to open in late spring, said Kalvin Reid, a spokesman for the 407 East Development Group, adding an exact date isn’t available yet. It was origi- nally to open in December 2015. When Hwy. 407 and Hwy. 412, the link from the 407 to Hwy. 401 at the Ajax-Whitby border, are opened, Durham will benefit, says Kathy Weiss, director of economic devel- opment for Durham Region. “The extension of the 407 will improve transporta- tion infrastructure by helping to reduce traffic congestion through the GTA and Durham Region, resulting in efficient movement of goods and people through the area, specifi- cally Durham,” she said in a statement. “It will also provide stimulus for facilitating economic growth by providing a much-needed, high-capacity trans- portation system, and will add 800 acres of employment lands into the Durham Region inventory. Further, the 407 will provide direct major highway access to the proposed Pickering airport and surrounding employment lands, cre- ating an aviation cluster in Durham Region. “This is all in addition to the creation of thousands of con- struction and engineering jobs.” Thousands of Durham residents and businesses will have an alternative route to Toronto and areas to the west, includ- ing Pearson International Airport. And people and busi- nesses in Toronto and points west will have another way to get to Durham and points east. Lisa Hausz, the manager of business development and marketing for Ajax, said transportation options are top con- siderations on where a company decides to locate. “They’re always looking for land, labour and transporta- tion,” she said. Transportation options are not only for moving goods, but ensuring employees can get to work, she noted. “They all work together,” Ms. Hausz added. That’s important as traffic congestion in the GTA costs about $6 billion annual in lost productivity. Economic development is “broader than transportation options. What we promote is access to all of them -- rail, road,” she said. When a company approaches the Town, she said trans- portation options are outlined. “We highlight the 407. We make sure they know where the ports are, the airports.” Companies will build transportation options into their business case, “options for moving product. When they look at the 407, it’s one of the options,” she noted. “We would like to see more truck traffic, but it’s not there yet with the pricing. It will become very viable in the future,” Ms. Hausz said. The importance of the highway isn’t lost on local officials. At a recent Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade meeting, Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan said, “The 407 could become a technology corridor linking like-minded businesses and institutions in York and Durham regions. “This becomes even more significant when the first phase of the Hwy. 407 expansion is completed later this spring. This critical investment in our infrastructure will help drive economic development across Durham Region,” Mayor Ryan said. “And with the 407 expansion, this intermodal hub would then have easy access to the Durham airport in Pickering, the 800 acres of employment lands in Seaton, the large commercial centres in Markham and Vaughan, and also Pearson Airport and its business parks,” he noted. “Access to a regional reliever airport, a municipal aviation airport, rail, water, six lanes of Hwy. 401, and now Hwy. 407 could transform Oshawa and Durham Region into a trans- portation and logistics powerhouse,” Mayor Ryan said. Environmental groups have opposed building the high- way, fearing it will perpetuate urban sprawl. Pat Valentine of Land Over Landings said the group’s con- cerns are primarily with the federal lands in Pickering. “We don’t think having a highway there will be enough to make an airport happen. There are so many reasons an airport can’t happen. I don’t think there’s a connection. There’s no business case for an airport and there’s never been a business case for an airport,” Ms. Valentine said. The highway would be a “boon for people on Brock Road. It will help with land south of the federal lands, with Seaton.” She noted the land south of the 407 is serviced, but “there’s nothing north, except 44 years of neglected farmland. That’s where we’re concerned.” Hwy. 407 in Durham has been on the books for decades and had been promised for years. When it finally made its way into Durham in the late 1990s, it ended at Brock Road in Pickering. And for years, that’s as far as it got. Extending it east of Brock out to Hwys. 35/115 has been a priority of local and regional politicians. With work wrapping up on the first phase through Oshawa, construction on the second phase to 35/115 in Clarington is under way and the timeline for completion is 2020. The second phase includes a 407-401 link, Hwy. 418, near Holt Road. Hwy. 407 gives Durham transportation options The extension of the 407 will improve transportation infrastructure by helping to reduce traffic congestion through the GTA and Durham Region, resulting in efficient movement of goods and people through the area, specifically Durham. -- Kathy Weiss, director of economic development for Durham Region “ du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 2 , 2 0 1 6 11 P 1900 Dixie Rd., Pickering •905-831-5632 Wh i t e s R d . Metrolinx is currently undertaking The Big Move transportation master plan, which focuses on the future of transporta- tion in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. A motion passed by City council at its most recent meeting notes enhancements for the Rouge Hill GO Station and the potential GO rail electrification on the Lakeshore East corridor, which runs parallel to the Picker- ing’s urban area, are intended to improve passenger service and help reduce road congestion and gas emissions. But council believes noise from the increased rail ser- vice will also result in a negative impact on the abutting residents and businesses. The motion says there are many innova- tive and creative measures that can be used to help minimize the impact of noise asso- ciated with rail service. These include fea- tures such as walls, living walls, trees, berms or a combination of them. Pickering council concerned about rail service noise du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 2 , 2 0 1 6 12 AP A Big Day birding in Durham Virginia rails and coots calling by moon- light in Cranberry Marsh. Whip-poor-wills screaming in the Ridges at dawn. Chim- ney swifts chittering over downtown Whitby when woodland songbirds have gone quiet in the heat of the afternoon. A lone bittern pumping its heart out from deep in the cat- tails as the sun goes down on an endless, glo- rious day. Big Day birding is a high point of the year for me, an exhilarating excuse to drop all pre- tense at being serious and go racing around the countryside at the peak of migration, try- ing to find as many species as possible in 24 hours. I do it for fun, because my team and I have been doing it for decades and like to keep challenging ourselves, and because in looking for my favourite birds I get to visit many favourite places in Durham Region. Darlington Park, searching for golden- crowned kinglets. Uxbridge forest, for broad- winged hawks and ravens. The Port Perry sewage lagoons for shovelers, pintail ducks and trumpeter swans, plus any shorebirds dropping in for a rest on their long, tiring flight to the Arctic. Burned into my memo- ry this year is a scene of three whimbrels -- large dark waders with long, decurved bills -- standing on wave-splashed rocks at Whitby Harbour, along with six ruddy turnstones sil- houetted against the sky. Finding 158 species of birds between two a.m. and twilight isn’t bad, I guess, though it’s ten less than we had last year. We’ve wit- nessed massive changes to the landscape over the years, due to alterations in agricul- tural practices and the relentless spread of housing and lawns. This year great scars from the 407 expansion gouged our route, erasing woodlots and fencerows where screech-owls hunted and kingbirds and cuckoos nested just last summer. Every year it’s harder to find certain species, and there’s less song. We used to hear east- ern meadowlarks throughout farm country, but this year noted just a handful. Most pas- turelands where bobolinks and upland sand- pipers used to live have been plowed up and seeded with corn. Once we could stop beside any freshly tilled field and hear horned larks singing, but this year, to my dismay, we didn’t hear a single one. And where marsh harriers would fly low over rolling grasslands, hunt- ing on the wing, a common sight, there were none at all. I was deeply moved to finally spot one, a ghostly presence at Reach Marsh at twilight, our last bird of the day. A recent motion passed by council states that despite the provincial government implementing the Stronger Protection for Ontario Consumers Act last April to address aggressive and misleading door- to-door sales tactics, Ontarians continue to experience unsolicited, aggressive and misleading sales tactics at their doors from companies seeking to sell home energy products. It says the agents acting on behalf of these companies misrepresent their pur- pose or identity, often posing as utility inspectors and government agents need- ing to gain access to the homes of Ontar- ians. The Province also implemented a ban on door-to-door sales for electricity and natu- ral gas contracts by passing the Strength- ening Consumer Protection and Electrici- ty System Oversight Act. But council wants to see a ban on all door-to-door sales in the home services sector, specifically relat- ing to heating, ventilation and air condi- tioning equipment, water heaters, water filtrations systems and other related home energy products and services. You’d be surprised how much you can learn in just a short amount of time. How about making a power shake, per- forming soccer tricks, saving energy, doing henna art, growing the perfect tomato or landing a whopper fish? That’s just a sampling of the many pursuits that were on display Saturday, May 28 when the Pickering Public Library hosted its How- To In 10 Festival. At booths throughout the library experts dispensed knowledge and advice on an array of subjects ranging from recreation and culinary interests to getting involved in the community. The event served as an outreach platform to provide information on community ser- vices, but also to simply foster interest in a variety of topics, said those involved. It was the perfect venue for Information Durham, an organization that connects resi- dents with the many services they require. “What we do is connect people to pro- grams and services in Durham,” said Infor- mation Durham representative Hannah Tuer. Links to a wide spectrum of services for issues ranging from housing and family sup- ports to education and legal matters are pro- vided via the organization’s busy website and staff. “We get thousands of hits a month and hundreds of calls a day,” Ms. Tuer said. “It’s nice for people to know there’s someone to help them, and that we’ve got their back.” At a table covered with bright lures, rods and reels and information pamphlets was Colin Sears, who travels the province for the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, promoting the joys of fishing. He provided basic tips for Landing The Big One, begin- ning with getting fishing line on the rod, picking a lure and choosing the right knot to affix it to the line. The Fleming College student said that once neophyte anglers are set up, they take it from there. And many realize the appeal of fishing right away. “It’s just basically to get them outside and to try fishing,” Mr. Sears said. It’s the belief of the OFAH that if people get involved in fishing, they’ll make themselves aware of the principles of nature conservan- cy, he said. It’s all about promoting and pre- serving Ontario’s great outdoors. A particularly bustling display was host- ed by staff from Pickering’s Port Restaurant. How to make a great cocktail was the prem- ise, and there was a lineup, because, well, cocktails. “Yeah, we’re pretty popular,” said a smiling Laura Knorre, who along with fellow staffer Deana Pirita demonstrated the construction of summertime libations like red and white margaritas, as well as the Strawberry Smash, a signature recipe at Port. People dig cocktail recipes because they involve drinks and relaxing, of course, but also for the infinite possibilities, Ms. Knorre said. You can be creative, and the results can be most pleasing. She took us through the construction of a Strawberry Smash, starting by muddling some arugula (not a typo), then adding an ounce each of strawberry syrup, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup consisting of sugar and water. Splash in two ounces of tequila, shake, and pour. Marvellous. Of course, the pursuits on display Satur- day would take much more than 10 minutes to ultimately master, but the key is sparking interest, then letting people run with it. Mr. Sears at the OFAH fishing display summed it up well. “We teach them the basics,” he said. “Then they can go and do it on their own.” A world of knowledge in just minutesat Pickering library’s How-To In 10 Festival Chris Tanouye photo PICKERING -- Rose Sanchez, left, and Deb Toner, right, worked on painting a shirt at the The How-To in 10 Festival and Roadshow put on by the Pickering Public Library. ESSENTIALS SERVICEBIKES BRANDS WE CARRY The Big M originally opened in 1965, and seven years ago Chris Papatheodorou reopened the drive-in style joint. He is proud to be continuing his father Ted’s tradition of offering delicious, original recipe, award winning homemade hamburgers. The restaurant’s blueprint for a better burger includes a toasted soft bun (that are delivered fresh daily), a seven ounce freshly grilled beef patty, topped with crisp iceberg lettuce, sliced beefsteak tomato, a slice of red onion, pickles, ketchup and yellow mustard. To make your burger even better, you can add on cheddar cheese, Canadian bacon and/or peameal bacon. Customers also love their famous steak on a Kaiser, homemade onion rings, French fries, sweet potato fries, homemade chicken souvlaki and The Big M chicken Caesar salad as well as the tasty Greek salad. While you are here, you can also enjoy one of the signature milkshakes, a soft ice cream cone or a sundae. When you visit The Big M, it’s like taking a trip back in time. The restaurant offers an authentic 60’s vibe. The combination of great food and outstanding customer service will have your coming back time and time again. “We pride ourselves on our 40 plus year tradition of serving the Bay Ridges area, which is why we’ve gone back to the restaurant’s original feel,” Chris says. “We offer high quality food and a good time – plus, you can’t get a better hamburger or steak on a Kaiser anywhere else.” It’s no surprise that that the restaurant was voted in as number one hamburger in Ajax and Pickering. Crawford & Sons: Fixing Basement Leaks Right the First Time Water can damage anything it comes across, including carpets, flooring, furniture, drywall, electronics and more. At the first sign of water entering your basement, it’s time to call the experts. Trying to repair it yourself can lead to delays and more damage being done. You want to work with professionals who will repair your basement leak right the first time. The first step in repairing a basement leak is pinpointing where the problem is. Every home is unique, and there isn’t a one-size-fits all solution for every type of leak. You need someone with experience who can determine the source of the water and come up with the right solution. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for over 35 years and has been in over 15,000 homes in Durham Region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine and I’m still learning,” he says. Once the source of the leak has been determined, Gordon will devise a solution that will be both successful and cost efficient. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Sometimes, the best solution is to stop the leak from inside. This will also avoid having to dig up any landscaping. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board is a very good solution,” says Gordon. “It’s extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping.” It’s important to fix the leak as soon as you spot it, as the longer you leave it, the more damage it will do. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one. You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation. For more information, call Gordon at (905) 686-6880. In the past, athletes have relied main- ly on static stretching (long stationary holds) of major muscle groups before physical exercise. Recent studies have shown that these static stretches can actually have a negative effect on explo- sive movements, performance and strength output during sport. These studies have shown that hold- ing muscles in a fully stretched posi- tion for 10-30 seconds or more actually inhibits the ability of the muscle to per- form at max capacity as this lengthens the muscle fibres for a short period of time, resulting in a decreased contrac- tion capacity. The same research has shown that dynamic stretching helps to prepare the body for max capacity performance activity involving running, jumping, throwing or kicking activity. Dynamic stretching uses momentum to propel a part of the body through a general range of motion used in the spe- cific sport being played. Basically you are moving as you stretch to warm up before competing. Why does dynamic stretching help? Moving while stretching helps to increase blood flow to the musculature as it lengthens and shortens. Increased blood flow brings an increased amount of available oxygen at the cellular level of our muscle fibres. Increased oxygen cre- ates an environment where our muscles can contract quicker, stronger, and for a longer period of time. An example of using dynamic stretch- ing could include a soccer player warm- ing up hip musculature by swinging the leg forward and backward numer- ous times, followed by swinging the leg inside and outside. This helps to get the player’s hips warmed up in a multidirec- tional function, preparing the athlete for maximum performance. Following physical activity is a good time to utilize static stretching. After contracting our muscles repetitively for a long period of time the muscle fibres shorten and can become slightly broken down depending on the intensity of the practice or game. Traditional stretching, holding for 10-30 seconds or longer, helps to nor- malize muscle fibre length, regulate blood flow and minimize build-up of post-exercise by products in our body.
