The hearing marked the final chapter in the trial of Sharon Baksh, who admits she killed the senior during a struggle in Ms. Rusnell’s Wayne Avenue apartment on June 1, 2013. Ms. Baksh, who lived across the hall from the 89-year-old Ms. Rusnell, pleaded not guilty to second degree murder when her trial began in February; she pleaded guilty to manslaughter last week. Lawyers for the Crown and defence sub- mitted a joint recommendation of 12 years penitentiary time. Ms. Baksh, who was arrested hours after the killing, will be given credit for the equivalent of more than four years of pretrial custody. Prosecutor Jinwon Kim urged Superi- or Court Justice Bruce Glass to give little weight to Ms. Baksh’s guilty plea, noting it came after a weeks-long trial during which her lawyers vigorously cross-examined wit- nesses, including her live-in boyfriend -- he called police after Ms. Baksh confessed to the killing -- and suggested he might have been the real killer. “Trying to blame someone else for some- thing you did is not accepting responsibility,” said Mr. Kim. “It’s not expressing remorse.” Ms. Baksh, 37, was in the midst of a days- long binge on booze, crack cocaine and other drugs when she broke into Ms. Rus- nell’s apartment with the intention of rob- bing the vulnerable senior, court heard. After Ms. Rusnell discovered Ms. Baksh in her home, there was a struggle during which Ms. Rusnell sustained more than 140 stab wounds, according to an agreed statement of facts. “That was the end of Ms. Rusnell’s long and well-lived life,” Mr. Kim said. “It ended in stark horror.” Court heard heart-wrenching statements from Ms. Rusnell’s children, grandchildren and neighbours. They described a kind, lov- ing woman whose dreadful death leaves a lasting void. Son Larry Rusnell said the killing left him devastated and struggling to fill the role of family patriarch to which he’d become accustomed. “I can’t help them to understand this senseless, brutal and horrific act because I can’t understand it myself,” he wrote. “This will haunt me for the rest of my life.” Nephew Greg Collins, a detective with Durham police (he played no investigative role in the case), said the crime has had an inestimable impact on his family. “Nobody should have to die this way,” he said. “Aunt Alletta was stabbed 149 times. Beaten and robbed. To support a drug habit. “This killer has robbed our family of any future memories that might have involved Aunt Alletta.” Family members speak out at sentencingfor woman guilty of killing Oshawa senior Metroland file photo OSHAWA -- Flowers and cards were left at the scene following the murder of 89-year- old Alletta Rusnell. Ms. Rusnell was killed June 1, 2013 following an altercation with a neighbour in their Wayne Avenue apartment building. (DQ Plaza) NewclientsReceive10%dISCOuNTOFF* Hamilton cabbie, worried about being defrauded of fare, called police on suspects PICKERING -- Two people were arrest- ed after a Pickering man was robbed of a ring he’d attempted to sell online Sun- day. Officers co-ordinated with securi- ty staff at the Rouge Valley hospital to arrest the two, who fled the scene of the robbery after pointing a gun at the vic- tim, Durham police said. The victim, 55, met with a person who had answered his Kijiji ad at a sandwich shop in the Dixie Road-Finch Avenue area around 3:15 p.m. April 10. When the woman grabbed the ring and ran from the shop, the victim pursued her and grabbed her arm, but was con- fronted by a man with a handgun. The suspects, who had hired a cab to travel to Pickering from the Hamilton area, wound up at hospital about an hour later when the woman complained of distress. The driver, worried he was being defrauded on the substantial fare, called police. Responding officers connected the two with the earlier robbery and enlisted the help of security staff to execute a safe arrest, said Sergeant Bill Calder. “We worked with security to quiet- ly move people away from the area,” he said. Cops seized an unloaded handgun and a quantity of heroin. Deshaun Young, 22, and 45-year-old Jennifer Moyer, both of no fixed address, are charged with robbery, use of a firearm during an offence and drug possession. Both were held for bail hearings. The ring has not been recovered, Sgt. Calder said. Results of a study showing the potential economic impact of a GO train extension for Durham Region were revealed last week. The numbers are staggering; they show that extend- ing and expanding GO Transit servic- es to Durham Region not make only makes sense but it will mean a boost to the local economy. The analysis suggests the project has the potential to generate $1.1 billion in transit-oriented, walkable urban development that would enable job creation (upwards of 21,000 perma- nent new jobs), the construction of 6,000 new homes and reduce the amount of CO2 emissions significant- ly. The proposed extension would add four new GO stations: a new station north of Hwy. 401 on Thornton Road South, one just south of downtown Oshawa, one in Courtice, and one in Bowmanville. These locations are desperately needed and will make the commute through the GTA a smoother, faster one for Durham residents. At this time last year, the provincial government ramped up public tran- sit in and around the GTA. The two- way, all-day 15-minute GO train ser- vice or better on weekdays, evenings and weekends between Oshawa and Union Station, an all-stop service from Oshawa to Union Station, as well as express, non-stop service from Pickering to Union Station in the peak period for trips starting in Oshawa was welcome news. This study only reinforces the need to even more ser- vice expansion. This area is growing at an unprec- edented rate and with it comes infra- structure issues. Durham is lagging behind the rest of the GTA and if the members of the Liberal government can’t see that then they need to come out here to see how hard it is to travel into Toronto. Even finding a place to park at the current stations in Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax or Pickering is now next to impossible. Other municipalities have been granted expanded all-day, two-way GO Transit services and Durham has waited long enough. Durham Region needs action, not words, when it comes to expanding GO train service. The time to act is now. Social media transparency is not always a two-way street column The social media age we live in has been celebrated as a time of total transparency. Share. Post. Tweet. Blog. Link. Like. Millions of us every day voluntari- ly post our photos to Facebook, tweet our feelings, Instagram our meals, and Pinterest what we want. We share our lives with the expectation that others do the same. We tell stories about our identities and affirm others when they tell, too. The transparency relationship fos- tered by social media is often a two-way street: we watch and are watched, read and are read. But sometimes we for- get that it’s not just our friends who are watching and reading us. Social media companies monitor, mine and then assemble all of the con- tent we generate into data profiles, and then sell these commodities to advertis- ing firms in a market worth more than $100 billion. They claim to know us bet- ter than we know ourselves, but use trade secrets and legislation to make it tough for us to really know them. While social media companies turn our daily work of sharing into a source of their private profit, governments use post 9/11 legislation and new surveil- lance technologies to watch what we say and do online. They shine a light on the lives of citizens, yet often use vast bureaucratic classification regimes to keep us in the dark. Secrecy can be legitimate, but too often the secrecy of powerful organi- zations corrodes and corrupts democ- racy by enabling the few to abuse their power to sustain their wealth and status at the expense of the many. The reveal of the Panama Papers last week, millions of records detailing how global politicos and CEOs have evaded taxes for years by stashing cash in shady accounts, highlights just how rampant secrecy is and shows how secrecy in financial dealings aids and abets the most privileged, while regular citizens continue to pay. Leading the charge against secrecy are “open governments,” freedom of information acts, whistleblowers, hack- ers, investigative journalists, and orga- nizations like Wikileaks and Transpar- ency International. These transparency groups and initia- tives strengthen democracy by encour- aging citizens to hold the powerful to account, checking that words and deeds align, and igniting movements for change against corruption. Social media makes most of our lives more transparent than ever before, but the powerful few still try to keep big secrets. It is high time for the value, technologies and rituals of transpar- ency to be applied to everyone, not just you and your Facebook friends. Will social media transparency ever become a two-way street? -- Tanner Mirrlees is an assistant professor in the communication and digital media studies program, faculty of social science and humanities, at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. The new plaza announced for the Rossland and Harwood area will destroy a small old-growth forest. Who in this day and age cuts down 100-plus-year-old trees for anything, let alone more retail space and pavement? Shame on the Ontario Munici- pal Board for giving its approval, shame on the developer for even considering a woods as a good location, and shame on the Town of Ajax, which should have purchased the prop- erty outright as a permanent nature reserve. The developer apparently is conceding other property to the east for forest growth which is good only in the very long term. All the wildlife will be displaced. For the new area to grow to the maturity of the present woods would take 100 years. In 100 years would the plaza still exist? Would people still have cars to park? I doubt it. But, if saved, the forest would still be a functioning wild place loved by all. You would think that all the high school kids who walk by the woods every day would be protesting to save it, or local residents would protest in some way. It is not the case. Most people probably are revelling in the fact that they soon will have a new place to shop. Such is the narrow thinking of most of Ajax. Peter Voth, Ajax Closing down BC Pickering Produce worries resident with lack of local produce To the editor: Each year as spring approaches, many area residents eagerly await the re-opening of BC Pickering Produce. This year they will wait in vain and watch as the market building is demolished to make way for a townhouse development. The Clarkson family own and operate the 32-year-old business, an entity which has contributed so much to the health, vitality and sustainability of this community. They have made every effort to find a suitable place in which to relocate the business in Pickering. Unfortunately the City (council and staff) has been unable to find a suitable site. With great interest, I read that the City of Pickering recently declared support for the Blue Dot Movement. When addressing coun- cil, Blue Dot member Chris Riddell noted “Pickering’s commitment to make decisions that protect and promote people’s right to a healthy environment.” I applaud this move by Council, however must note that although this may represent a step forward, the loss of BC Pickering Pro- duce has resulted in at least two very large steps back. Pickering residents need convenient access to high quality, locally grown produce and landscaping materials. Local farmers need an outlet for their prod- ucts. We need BC Pickering Produce. It is a vibrant presence in the downtown hub of the city and contributes greatly to the heart and soul of this community. Catherine Reidt Pickering Pickering council’s goofy math and repeated double talk To the editor: Pickering’s council in 2013 told residents that the Tillings operations centre was to cost $21 million. In March 2016, residents were told that the centre will now cost $26 million and our tax increase would be a mere 3.99 per cent. Pickering taxpayers are now told that the Tillings centre has been “gassed” reducing the overall budget to $35.1 million. Yet our tax increase remains at 3.99 per cent. Where is the corresponding reduction to our tax increase? Only Pickering council and their “goofy math” could remove either the original pro- posed $21 million or the now the increased $26-millon centre and still our tax increase remains at 3.99 per cent. Wait there is more, after extensive costly City planning, residents were originally told the Tillings Road location is the best for the city, we are now told that it has been moved to Clements Road, supposedly after further costly City planning. Good waste of tax dol- lars and planning, Pickering. What will be the new cost and location in 2017 when Pickering taxpayers will have to endure another year with another tax increase? Of course resi- dents will be fed a round of double speak by Pickering council and told that Pickering’s portion of the total increase with the added increase of the Durham Region portion really is within the yearly cost of living. Pickering residents should, by now, be well aware of this double speak from their council. All that residents know is that in the end the total taxes Pickering residents have to pay are far too high and whether or not the increase comes from the Region or from the City, the total cost imposed on them comes out of one pocket, that being Pickering taxpayer. Pickering council, the time has come to stop the waste, the overspending, the pay raises, the wasted City planning, and live within our tax means. Around 53 hectares in size, the forest is designated an environmentally significant area due to its ecological and historical importance. “It’s a very unique forest, and all in a tiny space,” says Altona Forest Stewardship Committee chairman Larry Noonan. Sitting within an urban centre, it’s a gem for people wishing to experience nature, but don’t want to go far. “I always call it a little jewel in the city, really,” says John Miseresky, committee co- chairman, who enjoys the forest during all four seasons. The committee is starting up a new sea- son of free guided hikes, which will run until February 2017. The first hike, on Sat- urday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to noon, will focus on frogs. Hikers may hear wood frogs, grey tree frogs, American toads, green frogs or even spring peepers, learn about their life cycles, and maybe even sneak a peak of them mating in the amphibian pond. “If they’re mating, it will be a marvelous experience because they ignore everyone when they mate,” says Mr. Noonan. Some of the other hikes, which are around two hours each of easy walking, will focus on animal tracks and signs, fall colours and wildflowers, insects and birding. “We’re going to be able to catch some of the migration,” says Natasha Gabor, com- mittee member. More than 120 species migrate through the forest and many call it home. The for- est’s residents include deer, coyotes, foxes, and, of course, many species of birds. The forest also provides essential habi- tat for a large number of plants which are common and not-so-common to southern Ontario, and contributes to the bioregion’s greenspace network. It’s connected to the environmentally protected Rouge-Duffins Wildlife Corridor on the north. The for- est also replenishes groundwater storage areas, and reduces the potential for damag- ing floods downstream. Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, which will also lead some hikes, is providing 100 trees and shrubs to help replenish the trees lost to invasive species, such as dog-strangling vine and emerald ash borer. “All are under attack,” Ms. Gabor says of the ash trees in the forest. A community tree planting will take place on May 14. “There are a lot of trees coming down,” says Liana D’Andrea, TRCA community engagement co-ordinator. Planting new trees add to the diversity of the forest and make it more resilient. But when you and your partner already have children, the planning process can seem downright daunting. Whether it’s your children, your partner’s children, or any combination in between, how can you make sure the kids aren’t left out when you walk down the aisle? Two Durham Region event planners shared their tips on how to include your children on your special day. Eva Vandersanden, an event planner from Annie Lane Events and Décor in Whitby, says it’s important to include children early on in the process to make the transition between the families easier. “[The wedding is] the merging of two families. It’s not just two people. It could be between four, six or eight depending how many kids are involved,” she says. Wanda Corbett, owner of Just For You Weddings and Events in Oshawa, agrees. “It’s important to show them the respect and trust right from the beginning and let them know they matter,” she says. Brides and grooms can accomplish this by letting the kids have a voice on what hap- pens on the wedding day. Both Ms. Corbett and Ms. Vandersan- den say the process can be as simple as let- ting the kids help choose the menu, décor, music or even get to invite a few of their own friends to the big occasion. They say letting the kids help will make the kids feel more involved and as if it is their celebration too. “The wedding is a nice party for the whole family,” says Ms. Vandersanden. Another way to get children involved is to give them a role, such as being a brides- maid or a flower girl. Ms. Corbett says to not be afraid to break traditional roles. She says she has been to weddings where older children have walked the parents down the aisle and given them away. “Traditions have changed so much. It used to be the father walking the bride down the aisle, you aren’t seeing just that anymore,” she says. Roles can also be as simple as letting the kids read a poem or speech during the cer- emony. They can also perform a song, a dance or play instrument at the ceremony. Ms. Corbett says never to underestimate what children can do. “Children are so smart at putting things together. They know computers ... so for them to do PowerPoint presentation of their family, they could do that easily,” she says. Ms. Corbett says the most beautiful way she has seen couples include children was during the wedding ceremony. Some options include writing the kids into the vows or having a family unity ceremony. One of Ms. Corbett’s favourite unity cere- monies is the sand ceremony. The sand cer- emony lets each family member choose his or her favourite colour of sand to pour into a clear glass container. After the sand is com- bined, the jar is shaken to create a unique pattern to be displayed as a unity reminder. Ms. Corbett says including the children in such an intimate part of the ceremony usu- ally has deep meaning that resonates with the child. She says the most touching cere- mony she has ever experienced was where the parents presented their six-year-old son with a ring of his own after the vows. “When they gave him the ring ... he cried. Everyone in that church cried, seeing that little boy cry.” Age can play a part in what the best role is for your child at your upcoming nuptials. Ms. Corbett recommends including chil- dren in the wedding process around the age of five, because kids at that age can under- stand the importance of the day. She says kids under the age of 10 can have simpler roles, such as saying grace or pre- senting the parents with a gift during the ceremony. Older children can do speeches or toasts. She says ultimately what role is best for your child depends on their comfort level and maturity. “It all depends on the individual kid, some kids are a lot more mature then other kids their age, while others aren’t ready.” FOCUS ON FAMILY FOCUS ON SENIORS FOCUS ON HEALTH FOCUS ON FOOD & WINE Tips on how to plan a wedding with children www.thinkstockphotos.com DURHAM -- On her wedding day, a bride speaks with her flower girl. As a single mother considering post-sec- ondary studies, my head swirled from the start –- How will I afford this? Where will I find the time? Who will help me? Pursuing school as a single parent might feel like an uphill battle, but as someone who succeeded and survived, I’m here to tell you it can be done. Here are my top tips for success. • Consider all the options. Depending on your family dynamics and financial situa- tion, a combination of day, night and online classes might be a better fit than a full-time day program. Ask questions about course load, time commitment and available resources to make an informed decision. • Build a financial plan early. Create a budget to identify shortfalls and help min- imize a financial crisis during the school year. Work with your financial aid office to build a strong plan. • Apply for free money. Many financial aid options, like scholarships, bursaries and awards, don’t need to be repaid. Do your research and apply early to ensure you meet the deadlines to maximize your resources. • Find your village. When someone told me it takes a village, I thought, “I’m going to need New York City!” The saying is true, so create a reliable support system. This includes securing childcare. If cost is an obstacle, consider applying for a subsidy. • Expect the unexpected. Alarms won’t go off. Kids will get sick when you need to meet your study group. Life happens. Learn to adapt and don’t let surprises get in the way of your success. • Let go of the guilt. You can’t do every- thing –- and that’s okay. Get comfortable with delegating and ask your kids to pitch in where appropriate. • Use every resource. Schools offer numerous on-campus supports, from aca- demic help and financial aid to health plans and wellness centres. Get familiar with your local community resources, too. • Practise self-care. Maintain a healthy balance by scheduling time for school, fam- ily and yourself. Being organized will help you feel in control. And don’t be afraid to say no. Having a child while in college was not part of my plan, but it forced me to figure out how to align my goals and opportuni- ties. All single parents considering school should do the same. It won’t be easy, but it will certainly be worth it. Above all else, believe in yourself. Single parents are just superheroes in disguise. -- Celeste Coles is a financial aid officer and member of Team Experience at Durham College. Online condolences may be placed at www.mceachniefuneral.ca SCHEIRING, Evelyn (25 May 1931- 8 April 2016) of Ajax, Ontario passed away peacefully in the company of her loving family after a valiant struggle. Evelyn was tenth of twelve children born to Adolf and Annie Wolf in the Dundurn district of Saskatchewan. She attended a one-room school (Coates) then on to City Park Collegiate in Saskatoon for high School. Following high school she was employed as a telephone operator for ten years, then attended Saskatoon Teacher's College, graduating in 1962. Evelyn taught Grade 2 in Saskatoon, Ottawa, Scarborough and Kitchener. Meticulous, creative and insightful, with a great love of her students, she later embarked on a career of tutoring students with learning challenges. She was able to understand their struggles and developed special methods to help them overcome the "snags" in their learning process, with remarkable success. Evelyn was gifted with the ability to read people through concentration on tea leaves. She was a popular addition to the "House Next Door" tearoom in Pickering Village for a number of years. After her marriage, she lived in Innsbruck, Austria for a time. An avid gardener, her house graced the nicest blue morning glories ever! She also played her button accordion at church functions, being self-taught and proficient enough to have won a free trip to Scotland for herself and her mother at the tender age of four. She became known for her delicious homemade perogies. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents and siblings: Adolf, Matilda (Wieser), Wilhelmina (Hauck), Raymond (Ruth), Elizabeth (Paul), Arnold (Ethel), Edmund, Elmer and Leonard (Bridget). She is survived by her sister Orpha (Lennart Anderson) of Pickering, Ontario and brother Walter (Florence) and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Many thanks to the excellent medical staff at the Ajax-Pickering Hospital who gave it their best. Memorial Service to be held Friday, 15 April 2016 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 119 Church Street, Pickering Village, in Ajax, Ontario at 11:00 a.m. If you so desire, it was Evelyn's wish that any monetary expressions of sympathy be made to the Second Chance Animal Sanctuary or any local animal shelter in lieu of flowers. Online condolences may be placed at www.mceachniefuneral.ca MacGregor Auctions AUCTION SALE Sunday April 17th 9:00am (viewing 8 am) Located in Orono.
