But as usage has increased, so has the need for more space at St. Paul’s On-the- Hill Community Food Bank. The volunteers who run the food bank are looking to find ways to help develop a sustainable plan to combat food shortages faced by Ajax and Pickering residents. The community -- residents, businesses, and service groups -- are invited to a meeting on Thursday, April 7 to provide insight. “We’re looking for people to come out who may want to partner with us, help sup- port us as we go forward,” said Ms. Jocz. Currently in 1,800 square feet, the food bank is renting extra units for overflow. There is no office, reception area or wash- room for clients. With 25 to 30 volunteers working on a given day, it’s crowded. In 2002, the food bank assisted 4,131 peo- ple. In 2015, that grew to 9,029. The food bank, historically assisting seniors on fixed incomes and single-par- ent households, is seeing more single men -- many laid off and at the age where rehir- ing or training isn’t an option. Even with a fixed income, many clients pay market value rent as there is a lack of social hous- ing in the area. An increase in hydro bills and higher food costs aren’t helping their situation. “We’ve had a drop in donations because I think in general the community is getting a little strapped itself,” said Ms. Jocz. The food bank receives most of its dona- tions around Thanksgiving and Christmas. “By July our shelves are bare and we’re going shopping,” said Ms. Jocz. This cuts into regular operating costs, which were $63,000 last year. Ms. Jocz hopes at the meeting, people will share ideas and provide input on improv- ing the food bank’s situation. Some options could include moving to a new location, or using a new space as a warehouse, but still distributing from the centrally located cur- rent location. “There’s many models that we would consider and see what works best for our clients and for the food bank in general,” said Ms. Jocz. The food bank is looking to partner with some local businesses. Benefits of compa- ny partnerships include raising communi- ty awareness, team-building exercises, and corporate tax receipts, where applicable. Financial donations can help toward pur- chasing food, operating the building, or go toward a larger purchase, such as new space. A company providing milk and eggs, or donation boxes that cost the food bank 98 cents each, could help offset major costs. “You can go big or you can go small,” said Ms. Jocz. “Small steps and big steps help.” The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Petticoat Creek Library, 470 Kingston Rd., Pickering. The Ajax mother of two was named Woman of the Year at Connect Women 2016 on March 2. The annual event cel- ebrates women in Durham’s business community. “It’s a great feeling, good to be recog- nized,” said Ms. Washington. Her charity of choice, Girls Inc. of Dur- ham, received $500 as a result. Atiya Siddiquei, the manager at the Muslim Welfare Home in Whitby, and Kim Copetti, owner of Copetti and Com- pany, were also finalists. Ms. Washington is manager of mem- ber services at Abilities Centre, and was part of the team before the doors even opened. “We wanted to make sure that we made sound decisions, policies, procedures and structure for the staff that would be joining us when the doors opened,” she said. Ms. Washington brought the Ontario Basketball Association’s head office and training facility to the state-of-the-art Whitby building. “It was a win-win for the both of us,” she said. She also founded Camda Sports Foun- dation Canada, a charitable organiza- tion that provides financial assistance to give at-risk youth opportunities to par- ticipate in healthy recreational activi- ties, academic counselling and mentor- ship programs. “I wanted to be able to give back to the kids that grew up vulnerable,” she said. Ms. Washington grew up in a commu- nity housing complex in Toronto. “I grew up poor, very, very poor,” she said. “My mom was very sick.” Ms. Washington’s mother, who loved her children, was diagnosed as being schizophrenic and bipolar. “At six years old I was a young lady,” Ms. Washington said. “I was cooking and cleaning and stuff.” But she chose to excel. “There was a word I learned at a very young age and it was ‘acceptance,’” she said. “Even today, if something doesn’t go right, I accept it and I keep moving.” Ms. Washington received a diploma in business management at Toronto School of Business and eventually became the first female Women’s National Basket- ball Association agent. In 2014, she also became an National Basketball Association agent in Cana- da. “It doesn’t matter where you come from; it’s how you finish your life and what you do with your life,” she said. Ministry spokeswoman Diane Naluz- ny said, in an e-mail, “The 407EDG (East Development Group) is still working towards completing the construction in order that the ministry can open the high- way in the spring.” When the highway will open isn’t current- ly known, Ms. Naluzny added. The highway was originally slated to open on Dec. 18, 2015, but that was pushed back to the spring. The first phase extends the highway from Brock to Harmony Road in Oshawa and also includes a link between the 407 and Hwy. 401, running parallel to Lake Ridge Road in Whitby and called Hwy. 412. The second phase is extending the high- way from Harmony out to Hwy. 35/115 and includes a 401 link in Clarington in the area of Holt Road. That project is slated to be fin- ished in 2020. At the time the delay was announced, Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca said remaining work couldn’t be done dur- ing the winter. “Outstanding work that remains includes top coat asphalt and permanent pavement markings in some sections, final stages of bridge construction at some locations, and final safety reviews. Some of the outstand- ing work is temperature sensitive and can- not be completed in the winter months,” Mr. Del Duca noted in a letter to local offi- cials. Ms. Naluzny said, “With a project of this size and magnitude, delays can occur that are often not attributable to any one cause. The exact nature and responsibility for the delays will be reviewed in context of the contract at a later date. “The 407EDG is motivated to complete the construction. They intend to continue to work towards completion as early as pos- sible.” When asked if the 407EDG would face financial penalties, she noted, “The 407EDG is responsible for project costs including those associated with delays. From the Province’s perspective, the proj- ect remains on budget.” Once the highway is opened, she said commuters will be able to drive on the highway free of charge until tolling is imple- mented. “The timing of opening of Phase 1 to traf- fic will not impact the overall completion date of the Highway 407 East Project, which is planned by 2020,” Ms. Naluzny added. Send us a letter to the editor, max. 200 words. newsroom@durhamregion.com, Budget will impact seniors on medication DURHAM -- It’s heart-warming to see Middle-Eastern families such as the Dog- hoz clan arriving in Durham and being greeted with big smiles, open arms and helping hands. For almost a month Syrian refugee Ahmad Doghoz and his family have been getting used to being Clarington residents after fleeing Damascus and spending years living an uncertain, day-to-day exis- tence in Jordan. On March 13, the family’s arrival, made possible through the sponsorship of St. Francis of Assisi parish in Newcastle, was celebrated and Mr. Doghoz was clear- ly elated to be here. “There’s no words to explain” how thankful he is to be in Cana- da, he said. It’s a scene that’s being repeated in com- munities across Durham. Committees at local churches and other groups have put in a lot of time, effort and money to spon- sor refugee families escaping the brutal, five-year war in Syria and ongoing turmoil and danger in Iraq. The scenes these peo- ple have witnessed are too horrible for us to imagine. The losses they’ve suffered are unbearable. But in the face of such despair, they have arrived in Durham to be met by the people who made their trip possible and who are doing their utmost to ensure they can settle into life in Durham. The hope of a better future has replaced fear. And, when you think about it, that’s the overwhelming reason why most of our parents came to this country. Perhaps they left ruined Europe after the Second World War. Perhaps they fled one of the many conflict areas around the globe. Regard- less of their origins, they came to Canada first for the safety and security we enjoy here, and secondly for the promise of a new life for their families. This is some- thing that transcends nationalities and cultures, something we can all relate to. Make no mistake, this is a big move for the refugees, jumping into a future in a new part of the world. As with our immi- grant parents, it took a lot of courage. Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster was at the celebration for the Doghoz fam- ily, noting, “this is what community is all about; this is what Canadian values are all about.” How true. Canada is a big, beautiful, wealthy country. A place to be proud of. But its greatest strength is its people, not just willing, but anxious to help others, because they need our help and it’s the right thing to do. The Doghoz family and others are see- ing this for themselves. We can’t see it enough. -- Metroland Media Group Ltd., Durham Division The best of Canada, Durham on display for refugees Cost for medicine for seniors in Ontario doubled without warning, without consultation The recent Liberal budget nearly dou- bled the cost that most seniors will pay for the medication they need to stay healthy. This happened without con- sultation, without asking seniors and without any warning. This isn’t right, nor is it fair. An average senior in Ontario needs eight different kinds of medication, 1 in 3 need more than 10 medications and most are on fixed incomes. As a result of Kathleen Wynne’s latest bud- get, seniors making $19,500 will see their Ontario Drug Benefit deductible almost double and they’ll pay a dollar more for each prescription filled, start- ing this summer. For seniors on a fixed income, these costs are going to add up fast. For months, I have been talking with people across Oshawa about the impact of Kathleen Wynne’s decision to sell off Hydro One, and what this is going to mean for Ontarians. Seniors across our community have told me how carefully they have to plan their budgets. Increasing drugs costs will throw that planning into fur- ther chaos. I’m worried that as costs increase, we will see more and more seniors in Oshawa and Durham Region who will not be able to afford the medications they need to stay healthy. When people don’t take their medi- cations, it can lead to declining health and complications down the road. That will mean more seniors in hos- pitals -- waiting even longer for care -- instead of living in good health at home. During the most recent campaign, the Premier made a point to say that “[t]he reward for a lifetime of hard work should not be poverty in your golden years.” Now that the campaign is over, however, it’s seniors on fixed incomes who are going to be paying the price. Ontario’s New Democrats have been standing up for seniors and pushing hard to ensure they have access to the prescription drugs they need, when they need them. They’re the people who have helped build this province and they deserve respect. We should be expanding prescrip- tion drug coverage and protecting uni- versal access to health care, not cutting back the coverage that seniors need. Now is the time for all of us to stand up together, to protect the health of Ontario’s seniors. I hope you will join me by writing to the government or stopping by my office to sign our petition. In July 2015, two Pickering area dentists filed a fraud complaint against their office manager. Dur- ham police say the major crime fraud unit began an investigation and found that since April 2013, cheques payable to the dentists from dental patients were sto- len. Police say the cheques were deposited into a personal bank account. Cash payments from the dental offices were also stolen, police said. A lengthy investigation uncov- ered five additional dentists, with offices in Brampton and Brama- lea, were victims. Police say it was found that since September 2009, the seven dentists were defraud- ed of more than $160,000, and more than $48,000 in cash depos- its were taken. Jean Hakim, 39, of Artania Street in Oshawa, has been charged with seven counts of fraud of more than $5,000, two counts of theft of more than $5,000, three counts of fraud under $5,000 and three counts of uttering a forged document and forgery. The 13-year-old Ajax girl has been working as a legislative page at Queen’s Park and it’s something she enjoys. “Yeah. Just getting to be in the chamber. I have a front-seat view of the chamber while it’s in session,” Bianca said. “It seemed like a nice experience. My brother did it. He liked it, so I wanted to try it,” Bianca said, adding her brother Carlo was a page three years ago. She’s in the middle of her third week and she has one final week to go. “I go into the chambers when the house is in session. I deliver documents to MPPs. I bring them water and things like that,” said the Grade 8 student at St. Patrick Catholic School. As for how the MPPs act, “it’s a lot more yelling than I expected. I didn’t expect them to be yelling back at each other. It’s not all MPPs really.” When asked if it was tough, she, as a teen- ager, noted, “It’s kind of. I have to wake up early to get there. Some nights, I’m not back until late, like seven or eight.” She travels to and from on the GO train with her dad. She would recommend being a page to other Grade 7 and 8 students “because it’s like really fun. You get to make new friends. But for parents who may be facing sev- eral pounds to lose with countless options of fad diets on the table, how can a proper plan be developed for the entire household without negatively affecting a child’s view on food and nutrition? According to pediatrician Kerri Best of Port Perry, kids should always be reminded of the importance of balance and health- fulness while building a regular routine with moderation in how they eat as well as in how they spend their time. “We should be wary of trends. Many are not based on sound scientific principles and can compromise our health,” she said. “Our children emulate patterns that they see in our lives, we have to be careful not to produce a generation of chronic diet- ers who never learn to eat in a healthy, bal- anced way because the trend in their home is always changing.” According to Dr. Best, many fad diets are low in calories, fat or food groups, elimi- nating important building blocks that a child’s body needs to grow, develop and perform. “Not getting enough calories could stunt growth, not enough calcium could lead to osteoporosis,” she said. “Fad diets that use special drinks, powders or herbs might not be safe for young growing bodies and psy- chologically, fad diets can lead to eating disorders.” It has been shown that vegetari- anism, parental dieting, parental endorse- ment or encouragement to diet and peer group endorsement of dieting correlate with unhealthy weight control behaviours in teens, she added. “Lifestyle habits develop throughout childhood and are especially established during the adolescent years, alterations in the eating habits of children and teens could have lifelong implications for dys- functional eating,” she said. “The Cana- dian Pediatric Society recommends dis- couraging fad diets, fasting, skipping meals and dietary supplements to achieve weight loss.” Dr. Best recommends families who may take on a new way of obtaining nutrition, after researching that it is the best fit for their family, see it through, maintain it and make it a new routine, as long as it is healthy and sustainable. “The focus should be healthfulness over weight loss,” she said. “Bottom line, fami- lies can choose to eat paleo, gluten-free or vegan, as long as they don’t take it to the extreme. Ensure a varied diet that provides adequate nutrition for children and inte- grate these new foods and ideas into daily life and supplement with essential vita- mins and nutrients.” For Doctor Natalie McCulloch, of Pickering, fad diets are not something she recommends to her patients. “In my practice I always try to educate about healthy lifestyle changes, something that is balanced, healthy and sustainable,” she said. “Anytime the word diet or fad are thrown around, generally people will only follow this for a certain period of time and they may lose weight but generally speaking they gain it all back and have not learned the tools necessary to eat healthy. A balanced lifestyle plan is what I would recommend for families.” And for Dr. McCulloch, a balanced life- style is engineered by a whole foods diet, which includes vegetables, fruits, beans, legumes, lean meat, egg, nuts and seeds. How should we treat cradle cap? I’ve heard natural oil can be used, what kind? -- Nikki, Brooklin A. Cradle cap is redness and greasy yel- low scales on the head. It can also be red patches and greasy scales on the face, ear, neck and in the diaper area and skin folds. It’s quite common in babies. The good news is that is not itchy for them and it usually goes away on its own. Because cradle cap can take a few weeks or months to heal, many people try to speed up the process. I suggest to par- ents: • Washing the area with baby shampoo and using a soft toothbrush or fine-tooth comb to remove scaly skin • Putting a small amount of oil (such as petroleum jelly, vegetable oil, mineral oil, olive oil or baby oil) on your baby’s head to loosen scaly skin. You can leave this on overnight, if needed. Next, brush the baby’s scalp gently with a soft brush to remove scales. Then wash the area with regular baby shampoo (not baby sham- poo with medicine in it). If your baby still has cradle cap after you try these things, talk to your family’s health-care team. In rare cases, the doc- tor might do a skin biopsy to rule out con- ditions that have similar symptoms to cradle cap. -- Dr. Javier Adrian Gutierrez. Q. My health question is the flu shot ver- sus the nasal spray, are they the same effectiveness? What are the flu-related admission rates for kids this year -- are they up or down? -- Amanda, Oshawa. A. Healthy kids over two can either get the nasal spray vaccine or the flu shot. The nasal spray vaccine is easily adminis- tered and is a great alternative for people who don’t like needles. The spray con- tains live viruses. The viruses are weakened and have lost most of their disease-causing properties but it means there are more restrictions for who can receive it. It’s best to talk to your doctor or phar- macist about the best option for you and your family. The flu season is late this year so there is still time to get vaccinated against the flu.
