Parents, students and community members ask school board to address racial inequality Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com AJAX -- At a Durham public school board meeting that started with remarks on the importance of Black History Month, a group of parents, students and community mem- bers asked tough questions about racial inequality and violence at Ajax High School after a brawl in the school’s cafeteria. A group of 14 people addressed the Dur- ham District School Board on Feb. 16 follow- ing two violent incidents at the south Ajax high school on Feb. 9 and 10. Though they didn’t speak, the group included 16-year-old Grade 10 student Kian Sinclair and 16-year-old Grade 11 student Cainan Newton, two students facing 20-day suspensions and possible expulsions follow- ing a Feb. 9 lunch-time fight. In an interview after the board meeting, Cainan said the trouble started when he and Kian were waiting in line to order food on Feb. 9. “A girl, she came up from behind us and pushed all of us out of the way and then words were exchanged, and then she left and we thought the problem was over but then she came back with two more guys that were in Grade 12,” he said. “The girl came up to Kian and she punched him in his face twice and then a fight broke out and then at one point it was the girl and two of them versus Kian and then I jumped in because it was obviously unfair and then it was a big fight and then someone tackled me to the ground and there were three guys on me at the same time and then three other guys fighting him.” The female Grade 12 student who admits to throwing the first punch in the fight said her involvement wasn’t motivated by race but by verbal taunts from the boys. She received a 15-day suspension for her role. The fight was ultimately broken up by stu- dents and school staff. Camille Taylor, super- intendant of schools for Ajax, estimates roughly 12 to 15 people were involved. On Feb. 10, the students report a friend of theirs was again targeted and he was thrown into a glass door and suffered a cut requiring stitches. The boys and their families feel they were targeted for violence due to their race and describe a school where some black students are regularly harassed. “Kian has six fights in his Grade 9 year, suspended each and every time because of aggression from white students, because they’re calling him (racial slurs) walking down the hallway,” said Andrea Sinclair, Kian’s mother. “Us walking down the hallway, just normal- ly walking down the hallway, they assume you’re walking down the hallway like you quote unquote own the place, no sort of hos- tility has been pointed towards them until they started throwing around the ‘n-word’ last year,” said Cairo Brown, a 15-year-old Grade 10 student who was suspended for four days, following the meeting. “I also think it’s racially motivated because anything we do they put the word black to it and they gen- eralize all black people based on all of our actions.” Cairo said he jumped into the fight to try to break it up but was accused of encouraging the fight. Ms. Taylor spoke on behalf of the board at the public meeting and stressed her priority was the safety of all students. In an interview subsequent to the board meeting, Ms. Taylor said she couldn’t speak specifically about the students involved and how punishment was dispersed but said the assumption that black students were more harshly punished was “incorrect”. “Everyone might see their perspective and pieces in terms of the information they have but everyone involved in the matter doesn’t have all of the information,” she said. “What I can say to you is the outcome of this particu- lar situation involved multiple demographic groups.” In a school with just under 1,200 students, Ms. Taylor said it’s not an anomaly for fric- tion to occur from time to time, however she points to student-led social justice initiatives around race and diversity as examples of stu- dents working positively for their school. “Nothing moves as fast as people would like it to move, but I would suggest that there are enough good things happening in the schools generated by students and the staff that would move us beyond any friction that we are experiencing at the moment,” she said. Andrea Pemberton, the school’s principal, said following the violence there was a school assembly reinforcing the code of conduct and proactive steps have been taken to reassure the students and parents that Ajax High is a safe place. Students were also asked for feed- back in the classroom. “Right now I’m going through the student feedback we received,” she said. Ms. Pemberton said she is still finishing the investigation into the two incidents. “Anybody that ends up returning or com- ing back in the building, obviously getting them back on track and a transition plan for individuals who return, that’s important,” she said. Meanwhile, Durham police were called in and are running their own investigation. Sgt. Bill Calder said there have been reports of harassment at the school and police are look- ing to hear from all sides. “We’re continually monitoring it, we want to ensure the students and staff, everyone at the school, their safety comes first,” he said. Ms. Sinclair and Cainan’s mother, Colleen McDonald, have vowed to fight to get their kids back to school. “I’m going to contact the Human Rights Commission, and make complaints to any and everyone possible who is going to listen to our plight and help get our children back into school,” said Ms. Sinclair. At the board, Ali Hasib questioned if the black students are being treated fairly and justly in the school. “I’d just like to remind the board and every- body here that violence begets violence, that is not the way to solve any problem, so please protect our children, protect our black youths at school,” he said. Several people discovered that their cell phones and wallets had been stolen while they were at the Tap and Tankard at 224 Brock St. S. in Whitby on Nov. 6. Employees noticed one suspect putting cellphones into a jack- et and notified police. Officers arrested the suspect and recov- ered five cellphones. Video surveillance inside the bar revealed that two suspects reached into purses that had been left unattended by their owners. One victim later learned that her credit cards were used to buy $269 worth of cigarettes and $28 worth of fast food later the same morning. My hands are slippery on the steering wheel and my legs are sticking to the front seat of my dad’s Olds Cutlass. I’m nervous. It’s the summer of ’82. I’m 16 and I’m tak- ing my driver’s test. The poker-faced instructor in the passenger seat has just asked me to parallel park on the main street of downtown Port Perry. No prob- lem. I’ve got this. I’ve been practising for the last two hours and only bumped one car. I pull halfway up beside the car in front of the empty space –- just like Mom showed me. I put it in reverse and peer back over my shoulder. And then I see them; my mom and my little brother standing right there on the sidewalk. Mom’s waving, like I might wave back and my brother is grinning like a Cheshire cat. I feel my teeth grind together as the instructor raises his eye- brows, his pen poised. I give it a little gas then lurch and jerk into the space, try- ing not to give the instructor whiplash ... Mom’s sparkling smile momentarily blinding me. Well, that day -- despite my cheering section on the sidewalk -- I became the lucky recipient of a full driver’s licence. However, I’ve never parallel parked since. I still drive downtown, pretend- ing I’m not a spaz and that this will be the day I will back into a tight little space like a pro. But, inevitably, I circle round and round until I find that easy space I can drive into. To my credit, my other driving skills are up to par. For instance, I’ve learned that tailgating doesn’t magically make that person in front of me go any faster. And I’ve learned that when I see a sign up ahead that says 50, I can actually use my powers of anticipation and take my foot off the gas instead of jamming on the brakes when I reach the sign. I’ve also realized that every vehicle I’ve ever driven comes with a handy little lever on the steering column that oper- ates my turn signals so I can let other drivers know my intentions. Now that’s cool. And I’ve figured out the mystery of merging. Getting on a highway is actu- ally way easier than parallel parking. You just need to give it gas and match the speed of the next motorist and voila you’ve merged -– unless you’re that guy –- still back there signaling and waiting for everyone to slow down and let you in. And if someone does let me in, I’m going to be polite and acknowledge this gesture with a nod or a wave. Because I’m not a jerk. Driving is like so many things in life. You need a little bit of skill, some com- mon sense and a whole lot of common decency. Just like parallel parking. It takes skill -– a skill I plan to learn one day. Maybe. -- Megan Denby is a local writer and the author of ‘A Thistle in the Mist’, a Scottish historical drama set in Scotland and Nova Scotia. megan Denby Guest columnist There is trouble in our hallways. Three high schools in Durham were reluctantly forced to deal with potentially life-threat- ening situations involving students last week. The most serious, and newsworthy of these, was a teenage girl who stabbed several people at Dunbarton High School. We have since learned that she was sui- cidal and felt this was her best option. Within hours of the ‘real’ threat an online threat was made about the same school while at St. Mary Catholic school and Eastdale Collegiate more threats came in. Durham police deemed them not worthy of lockdowns but they investigated and spelled out the dangers of this behaviour to the offenders. It would be fair too say almost 99 per cent of all threats never turn out to be serious, but when they are, it appears our schools and police are prepared to deal with them. The tricky part is how do we stop, or at the very least, curtail these threats? Education seems to be the best avenue. We as a society, that includes parents, classmates, teammates and not just edu- cators and law enforcement, must treat these threats as opportunities to disarm potential copycat behaviour. Students need to know that posting anything on line that could be considered a threat that will stick to them longer than they ever imagined. We hope that parents are continually monitoring what their teens are posting online but we all know that’s not possible: education and guidance on the topic are what parents must provide for their chil- dren. For the young girl who wanted to die and consequently stab people at Dun- barton, it’s obvious now that her online posts and past behaviour were cries for help. For the others, who get in the mood and decide to rant violently online they could get themselves into serious trouble because Durham police don’t just ‘police’ the streets — they are online as well. These three local schools lost classroom teaching time, police are wasting resourc- es, children are frightened, and parents are angry and alarmed. As a society, we can’t react to an online suicide threat nonchalantly and proceed with the idea that somebody else will take care of the person in crisis — we need to be the person that responds. Always err on the side of caution and treat every person making these online threats as serious and keep in mind that your decision could mean the difference between life and death. our opinion Online threats by teens need to be taken seriously Agree? Make up for missed RRSP contributions in the past:You’ll boost retirement savings and create a larger tax deduction this year or in future years. Pay off high-interest debt: Pay down credit card balances, personal loans or other expensive debt. Pay down your RRSP loan: If you borrowed money to make last years contribution, pay down the loan. The incident began about 5:30 p.m. Feb. 28 when an officer attempted to stop a speeding Cadillac on Con- cession 7, Durham police said. The vehicle accelerated away, reaching speeds of 140 kmh in an 80 km zone, police said. With the officer following at a safe distance, the Cadil- lac continued on until the driver pulled to the side of the road on Sideline 8. A man leapt from the vehicle and took off on foot across a muddy farm field, police said. After a 50-metre foot chase, the officer caught up and attempted to arrest the suspect. There was a struggle that ended when the cop wrestled the suspect to the ground. Douglas Cherry, 49, of Sideline 12 in Pickering, is charged with impaired driving and assault to resist arrest. Your Local Birding & Nature Experts Patrick Stewart Blunt talk with By Bill Brioux Y ou know him for his deep, melo- dious voice and commanding manner, both used to great effect during his many seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation as well as “The X-Men” action films. What you probably didn’t know about Sir Patrick Stewart—a veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company—is that he’s a comedian at heart. “I’ve always wanted to do more come- dy in my work,” says Stewart, who doesn’t look anywhere close to his 75 years. He gets his chance in Blunt Talk, his edgy U.S. cable comedy airing in Can- ada on Shomi. Stewart plays a British news anchor who lurches from scandal to scandal as host of an American news network hour. Think Piers Morgan meets “Mad Prophet of the airways” Howard Beale from “Network.” Stewart says he’s having the time of his life working on the L.A.-based series. He’s so into comedy now he head- lined last summer at Montreal’s Just for Laughs comedy festival, where his shtick was translated into the CBC special “A Knight of Comedy.” “I love Montreal,” says Stewart, who shot all of his “X-Men” movies in the Quebec city. While he says he’s “a long way from seeing myself as a stand-up,” he’s also started working out with the Improvised Shakespeare Company. “When you’re improvising, the funda- mentals are you live in the moment and you listen very carefully,” he says, sug- gesting the experience has raised his total acting game. He also gets his funny out through Twitter, where his 2.14 mil- lion followers know him as @SirPatStew. Stewart wasn’t always sold on comedy. He remembers seeing an interview with Laurence Olivier, his hero as a teenager. “He said, ‘It’s wonderful to hear an audi- ence gasp at what you’re doing or cry out or scream or sob, but nothing compares with making an audience laugh.’” The remark puzzled Stewart, who saw Olivier as “our great tragedian.” Now he gets it. “It is marvelous to hear people laugh. I like to think that my own life has got plenty of comedy in it.” His professional life certainly got fun- nier after he met Seth Macfarlane. The prolific producer/writer/actor heard Stewart was a fan of Family Guy and sug- gested having Stewart voice a charac- ter on his follow-up animated comedy, American Dad. Stewart voices deputy CIA director Avery Bullock. “He’s clearly an Englishman among a group of agents so stupid none of them has noticed he’s English,” says Stewart. “They’re not the smartest knives in the drawer.” Macfarlane also produces Blunt Talk but he doesn’t write it. That task falls to Jonathan Ames, the American novel- ist behind the droll HBO series Bored to Death. In preparing for the series, Stew- art and Ames, both living in New York, would meet in a coffee shop down 5th Avenue and sit for hours telling stories about themselves. They went over the plays they liked, books they’d read, and so forth. Stewart also wrote a back-story “bible” on Blunt for the writers, detailing what the character’s childhood was like. “Some of it based on my own experiences and some of it not.” Stewart’s own childhood read more like something out of Dickens. Born in 1940 in a poor household in Mirfield, England, he and his two older brothers always kept a sharp eye out for their strict father Alfred, a Regimental Sergeant Major in the British Army. “It was said that when he strode onto the parade ground,” Stewart once said, “birds stopped singing.” Stewart’s acting career began when a teacher at his grade school put a copy of Shakespeare in his hand and said, “Now, get up on your feet and perform.” Perform he did, through 16 seasons of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1966 through 1982. Ben Kingsley and Sir Ian Richardson were among his fellow actors there. He made his TV debut on the long- running British soap Coronation Street. Through the ‘70s, roles on Broad- way and British theatre were juggled with many TV appearances in The UK. He was still an “unknown British Shakespearean actor” to the Los Angeles Times when he was cast as Captain Jean- Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Gen- eration. At first he wasn’t crazy about the role or, especially, the crazy long hours required to crank out a U.S. sci-fi television series. Five feature films and millions of dollars later, Stewart came to embrace his place in the Star Fleet command, admitting the series, “changed everything for me.” He hopes things continue to change for the funnier with Blunt Talk. “It is endless days of fun,” he says of working with ensemble cast, includ- ing fellow Brit Adrian Scarborough who plays Blunt’s doting manservant Harry. “The experience is much more like daily reunions with dear friends than shooting a series.” Stewart with his Blunt Talk co-star, Adrian Scarborough. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 2 , 2 0 1 6 18 AP Nurse offers tips to prevent falls in elderly There are a number of ways to help seniors prevent falls, keep them safe Falls and trips unfortunately have become far too common amid the elderly popula- tion. However there are ways to overcome such accidents and prevent seniors from sustaining injuries and emotional scars. Falls are prevalent in our society but so are prevention methods. Prevention is crucial when it regards our health and well-being. There are a variety of measures you can take to ensure you and your loved ones are safe. Tips for fall prevention include: • Using gait or walking aids when possi- ble and necessary such as canes, walkers, wheelchairs or non-slip socks (grip socks) and using bars to grab onto in bathrooms, by the bathtubs or showers, and, if pos- sible, beside beds. Wearing glasses and hearing aids can also help in observing the environment and keeping in tune with what is around us. • Taking medications cautiously is anoth- er way we can prevent falling. Many older individuals are using more than five med- ications, which can contribute to feeling dizzy at times, thus causing falls. Speak to your physicians and examine the necessi- ty or limit some medications -- it can be of great benefit. Taking vitamins such as vita- min D and calcium can also keep bones strong, which can prevent breaking bones or fractures • How we move is vital in preventing falls. Most of the time, falls happen as individ- uals stand up too quickly or walk too fast from the bed to the bathroom, for instance. Taking the time to sit up and stay seat- ed until you’re feeling steady can make a major difference for your next steps. • Engaging in light to moderate exer- cise such as walking and yoga can help strengthen muscles and improve balance. -- Alicia Bose is a registered nurse and yoga teacher specializing in senior care in Cobourg. It is usually cooked with honey but try it with maple syrup – it’s delicious! Best served with rice or mashed potatoes. 2 pounds lamb, cut into 1-inch cubes 4 tablespoons tomato paste diluted in 7 cups warm water 2 tablespoons dibs rumman (pomegranate concentrate) 1 tablespoon lemon zest 4 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tablespoon dried mint 2 pounds quince, peeled and diced into 1/2-inch cubes 3 tablespoons maple syrup 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon black pepper In a large saucepan, stir together the lamb, the tomato paste-water mixture, dibs rum- man, lemon zest, garlic and mint. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook covered for 30 min- utes. Add the quince (a relative of apples and pears) and reduce heat to low, cover and cook for 30 minutes. Stir in the maple syrup, salt and pepper and cook uncovered for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve immediately. By Habeeb Salloum Make March sweet with Maple Syrup DEMONOW FOR FREE! Do you sometimes feel that you can hear well, but not fully understand what’s being said? This can be most evident in social conversations and watchingtelevision.Fortunately, there may be a solution for some people dealing with this type of hearing loss with the Audéo Venture hearing aid which has been designed specifically tohelpimprovespeechcomprehension without being noticeable in the ear. Poor comprehension in conversation can possibly be caused by undetected hearing loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochleathathear high-rangesounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss orworkplace noise.Hearing loss in the high frequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear making it difficult to hear consonants like s,f,t, k,h and g. Speech comprehension is even more challenging when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not consider themselves to have a hearing problem. They can hear deep toneswith no issue, and often put difficulty understanding speech down to unclear pronunciation. However, the time soon comes when problems with comprehension become annoying. Selecting places with shorter waiting lists could expedite process I was asked recently if I thought it was possible that the Community Care Access Centre was purposely delaying the placement of a reader’s mother into long-term care so that the government didn’t have to pay for her care. The reader’s mother is currently living in a retirement residence and the concern is that she may run out of money before she goes to long- term care. My answer was a resounding no. The CCAC has no vested interest in delaying someone from being admitted to long- term care. Yes, the CCAC is a government- funded organization but there is no great conspiracy to save the government money at the expense of our citizens. In the long run, it could end up cost- ing the government more money in care for this lady. If she is not in the right place and if her care needs go up to the point where they cannot be managed effectively in a retirement setting, there is a risk that something may happen where she goes into crisis and ends up in hospital. Her care needs may be even greater when she finally does get into long-term care. No. The more likely cause of the delay in her placement is the long wait lists that we currently have for long-term care beds. Once an application is made through the CCAC for long-term care, the family is asked to tour the facilities in the area where they would like their parents to live. Often the choice in location of facilities is made based on their proximity to fam- ily who may want to visit. They will be asked to select their top five choices and their parent will be placed on the wait list for those locations. If they have selected facilities that have a long wait list, then the parent may be waiting several months to a couple of years for a bed to become avail- able. If you are in a similar situation, my advice would be to contact your care co-ordinator at the CCAC and ask where your parent is currently on the wait list for the facilities that you have selected. If you think your parent needs to go to long-term care faster and the wait lists are too long, I would suggest beginning your tour again and try to select one or two facilities with a shorter wait list. In order to assist you, I have included the web page address to the CCAC report on wait times for the Central East CCAC which is the office that we would contact in the Durham Region: http://healthcareathome. ca/centraleast/en/care/Documents/ LTCH_Availability_Report.pdf For more information, please e-mail me at aseniorsfriend16@gmail.com -- Anne Murphy has worked for more than 20 years on the operations side of the health-care industry. Osteoporosis Canada recently released the first-ever national guideline on preventing fractures in long-term care homes, where fractures are significantly more common than among seniors in the community. The guideline, entitled Recommenda- tions for Preventing Fracture in Long-Term Care, offers healthcare professionals, resi- dents of long-term care homes and their families, guidance to help take measures to reduce immobility, pain, hospital transfers and improve the quality of life for residents at long-term care homes. “One-third of older adults who experi- ence hip fractures, and many others who experience different types of fracture, are residents in long-term care homes. Yet, in many cases, these fractures can be prevent- ed,” said Dr.Alexandra Papaioannou, lead author and Professor of Medicine, Division of Geriatric Medicine,McMaster University. The fracture rate for residents at long- term care homes is two to four times that of similarly-aged adults living in the com- munity. Fragility fractures, a type of frac- ture that occurs from normal activities, are a direct consequence of osteoporosis and can be devastating for long-term care resi- dents and their families. Fragility fractures inflict residents with chronic pain, immo- bility and even death, and have a debili- tating impact on the quality of life. In fact, nearly half the number of women living in long-term care residences who suffer a hip fracture will die within one year.Fractures from osteoporosis also have significant eco- nomic costs to the Canadian healthcare sys- tem and despite the availability of therapies, many residents are not being treated after fracture. The guideline outlines five strategies to prevent fractures in residents of long-term care homes. These include: vitamin D and calcium intake, hip protectors, exercise, multifactorial interventions to prevent falls and osteoporosis medications. Details at www.osteoporosis.ca. Guidelines aim to prevent bone fractures at long-term care homes du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 2 , 2 0 1 6 21 AP Entry LEvEL Position AvAiLAbLE Previous Sales/Customer ServiceExperience An AssetHowever, No Experience Required This is an Entry Level Position, butwe offer Advancement Opportunity Multiple Openings Available Call 905-440-3588 with your CompensationExpectations and Interview Availability Circulation Clerk - Casual Part Time Oshawa This Week 865 Farewell Ave, Oshawa THE COMPANYA subsidiary of Torstar Corporation, Metroland is one of Canada's premier media companies.
