If you’re able to give, these organizations would appreciate the help. Toy Mountain Campaign The Toronto Area Ford Dealers Association is continuing with its holiday tradition of join- ing CTV’s annual Toy Mountain Campaign in support of the Salvation Army for the sixth consecutive year. Ford dealers from across the GTA will collect charitable donations of new, unwrapped toys from Nov. 17 through Dec. 21 in an effort to bring joy to thousands of deserving children this holiday season. This year, the 22 Toronto Area Ford deal- ers are aiming to collect more than last year’s total of 16,272 donations. While donations will be accepted through Dec. 21, every dona- tion of a new and unwrapped toy at a partici- pating Ford dealership by Dec. 15 will receive a ballot for a chance to win a new 2016 Ford Escape. Participating dealers in Durham include: • Formula Ford, 815 King Street West, Oshawa • Marigold Ford, 1120 Dundas Street East, Whitby DRPS 27th annual Food and Toy Drive The Durham Regional Police Service launched the 27th annual Food and Toy Drive on Nov. 13 at St. Bridget Catholic School in Brooklin. DRPS was joined by a group of students from the school to show their sup- port for the drive. Guest speakers included Chief Paul Martin, CTV News Anchor Ken Shaw, Chief-for-a-Day winner Anthony Scott, Santa Claus and the DRP musical band, The Heat. There were also musical performanc- es by students at St. Bridget. Local business- es, organizations and individuals can donate food and toys this month which are then picked up by volunteers, sorted and distribut- ed to members of the community. Donations can be dropped off at any DRPS division or any fire station in Oshawa, Whitby, Claring- ton and Ajax. Uxbridge Toy Drive • The 2015 edition of the Uxbridge Toy Drive has kicked off and new, unwrapped toys and cash donations will be accepted until Dec. 18. Donations can be dropped off at Canadian Tire, Walmart, Zehrs, Little Acorn, M and M Meat Shops, McDonald’s or Uxbridge Bruins games. Organizers hope to collect 2,000 toys, which will all stay in the Uxbridge area. For more information about the toy drive, visit www.uxbridgetoydrive.com. Stuff a Bug for Santa The Town of Whitby’s annual Stuff a Bug for Santa campaign kicked off this year at the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony at Celebra- tion Square outside the Whitby Public Library on Dec. 5. The campaign encourages dona- tions of new toys for less fortunate children in the community on Christmas morning. The campaign’s signature Volkswagen Bee- tle will again offer residents the fun of stuffing toys through the open sunroof. The Salvation Army distributes these to disadvantaged fam- ilies in the region. The ‘Bug’ is located at Iro- quois Park Sports Centre, 500 Victoria St. W., from Dec. 8 to 22 for donations. Royal Oak Food Drive The Royal Oak launched a food drive at its Whitby Shores location, 617 Victoria St. W., Whitby. It’s accepting all non-perishable food items to be donated to the Salvation Army. Cash donations will be matched by the pub. Scanga Food Drive The sixth annual Scanga Food Drive in Ajax kicked off Nov. 29. The food drive is in sup- port of St. Vincent de Paul (Ajax), St. Paul’s On The Hill Food Bank (Pickering) and The Salvation Army (Ajax). Drop off donations at Coffee Culture, 60 Salem Rd. and 3 Harwood Ave. S. in Ajax, or Petrina’s Billiards, 21 Har- wood Ave. S., Ajax. 2015 Toy Drive for Kids Whitby Toyota, 1025 Dundas St. W., in part- nership with Lakeridge Health, is filling a Tacoma with toys from now until Dec. 18. For more information call 905-668-4792. Chatterpaul’s Toy, Diaper, Coat Drive Chatterpaul’s Restaurant, 3500 Brock St. N. is hosting this event on Dec. 13 in the restau- rant’s parking lot. They will be collecting new and used toys, children’s coats/hats/mitts and diapers from 1 to 5 p.m. For more infor- mation call 905-665-7575. Mr. Dickson was admitted to hospital last week and he’s expected to be released sometime this week. A statement from his office noted, “For the last while Joe has felt rundown, suffer- ing from exhaustion, plus a lack of his usual high-powered energy. Joe attributed this to too many 100-hour work weeks, plus tired- ness from two election campaigns in 14 months.” Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- The opening of Hwy. 407 east of Brock Road has been delayed until the spring. Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca announced the delay, saying some work can’t be done during the winter. “Outstanding work that remains includes top coat asphalt and permanent pavement markings in some sections, final stages of bridge construction at some locations, and final safety reviews. Some of the outstand- ing work is temperature sensitive and cannot be completed in the winter months,” Mr. Del Duca noted in a letter to local officials. “Despite the tremendous progress, and being very close to completion, it is now apparent that the project will not be ready for traffic on the intended date,” he said. Durham Region Chairman Roger Anderson said he wasn’t surprised at the announce- ment. “Considering the winter they had, it doesn’t surprise me. The fact they’re only a couple of months behind does surprise me,” Mr. Anderson said. “I rather they open it up cor- rectly. Inspect it properly and not open it up and have it closed a month later. “It gives us a little more time to do road work to roads connecting to the 407. Not that we can do a lot in the winter. It won’t hurt us any, for sure,” Mr. Anderson said. The first phase of extending the highway east of Brock in Pickering to Harmony Road in Oshawa was scheduled to open on Dec. 18. The link between the 407 and Hwy. 401, running parallel to Lakeridge Road, was also scheduled to open then. Phase 2 will see the highway reach Hwys. 35/115 and another north-south link in Clar- ington. Mr. Del Duca said that project is on schedule to be completed by 2020. “The province awarded this contract in March, and initial tree clearing activities have recently started. You can expect to see addi- tional work including utility relocations and bridge foundations this winter,” he said. Motorists using the first (Oshawa) phase of 407 won’t initially be charged tolls when the highway does open, the minister added. “When the highway is opened in spring 2016, commuters will be able to drive on the highway free of charge until tolling is imple- mented. This will help commuters to become accustomed to the new roads,” he stated. Mr. Del Duca noted, “Construction began in 2013, and has seen significant progress, particularly this season when over three mil- lion tonnes of gravel and more than 370,000 tonnes of pavement have been placed. Many aspects of the project are complete includ- ing earth grading and most drainage features, placement of the 407 and 412 roadway except for the top coat of asphalt, and the majority of 407 and 412 bridge construction.” The Province and the 407 East Develop- ment Group “are currently finalizing details of a revised schedule targeting a spring 2016 opening. More details regarding a revised project schedule, including a new opening date, will be available soon, and I will share those with you as they become available.” YOUR CASINOTOUR SPECIALISTS! Then I cried. It wasn’t over all the money I could be spending but rather, as a middle-aged woman, it is a dream finally coming true. While on that merry-go-round of end- lessly looking for that elusive, full-time, well-paying job, I started to look around for alternatives. You have to adapt, no matter your stage in life. I figured out what I really, really wanted to be when I grew up and then started on that path to my end goal. Along the way I discovered something that was missing from my life. I didn’t even miss it when it wasn’t there. In fact, younger me would have thought older me was crazy. In order to apply for higher edu- cation, one might need to go back to high school to pick up cred- its or upgrade marks. ‘Ugh’ was the first thing that came to my mind. At first I heard that internal admonishing voice: “Oh, what have you done?” Then, as I was getting back into the learning groove, I realized that I was enjoying this. It is empowering learning new things. A boost to the ego receiving quality marks. In my mind, it is equal to a gold star. Similar to the Grinch’s heart that swells three times its size, my brain did much the same thing. There are so many ways to take a course, too. You can sit in an adult classroom or learn online. I attended summer school for a month that was teacher-led but fol- lowed online instead of the traditional classroom setting. I have also tried night school and online studies through the local school board. I liked learning through the board due to the fact that I received a hard copy of the book, for a refundable deposit, and access to a tutor. You just can’t take the old school out of this girl. People are fascinated, too, when I tell them I am going back to school. I like to think it’s not due to my age but to the fact that, deep down, we all want to flex our brain muscles. There is so much to learn! Do something spectacular for yourself today and sign up for a course. It feels amazing. Then post those report cards on the fridge like I do. It’s a visual reminder of how hard I worked and the swelling of pride that results from a job well done. Bragging rights earned. And they sell gold stars at the dollar store. -- Carla Bolton is a Bowmanville residents who hopes to hear some good news about her application. Carla Bolton Guest column Similar to the Grinch’s heart that swells three times its size, my brain did much the same thing. “ The Durham Regional Police Service’s Festive RIDE campaign is in its third week and so far the number of people drinking and driving is fairly consistent with last year’s numbers. Sixteen people were charged with drinking and driving offences last week. By comparison, 23 people faced similar charges during Week 3 of the campaign last year. What’s especially startling about this year’s campaign, though, is the fact that two off-duty police officers have been charged with drinking and driving. On Nov. 23 an off-duty officer was charged after a car was driven into a tree and abandoned. And just last week anoth- er off-duty officer was charged after being stopped by colleagues on RIDE duty. Given the years of public awareness campaigns police departments across the GTA have conducted, the Mothers Against Drunk Driving commercials running reg- ularly on television and the more punitive drunk-driving laws there’s no excuse for a driver to get behind the wheel of a car when intoxicated. But when a police offi- cer is charged with drinking and driving that runs counter to the message DRPS is sending to the public. Years of hard work done by the police can be erased by the poor decision of one off-duty offi- cer. When two officers are involved in two separate incidents though it shakes the confidence of the people the police are sworn to protect. We are all judged by our actions but none more so than police officers. The public doesn’t care if an officer charged with drinking and driving was off-duty. When something like this happens it makes headlines for all the wrong rea- sons. Despite these isolated incidents, DRPS will continue its Festive RIDE campaign in an effort to keep our streets safe for everyone. This isn’t something they do just during the holidays, it’s a program the police do throughout the year and for that they deserve credit. We can all do better when it comes to spreading the message about drinking and driving. Public awareness campaigns help but parents should talk to their chil- dren, teachers should talk to their stu- dents, we should all talk to one anoth- er about doing the right things when it comes to drinking. By all means, celebrate the holidays but do so responsibly. If you’re drinking, you’re not driving. Call a cab, use a des- ignated driver, take public transit or walk. Just don’t get behind the wheel of an auto- mobile. We all have a duty to lead by example and do the right thing. -- Metroland Media Group Ltd., Durham Region Division OUR OPINION Isolated incidents send wrong message about drinking and driving in Durham Agree? New Year’s Eve games for Durham families Keep kids entertained while waiting for the ball to drop DURHAM -- The days of champagne flowing at the strike of midnight may be over, but that doesn’t mean the party has to stop. Celebrate New Year’s Eve with your kids with some of these family-friendly games and activities. 1 . Party hats: Help kids make their own party hats with simple supplies from the dollar store such as bristol board, plastic tiaras, glitter, ribbons and glue. 2 . Photo booth: Show off those unique party hats in your home-made photo booth. Hang a bed sheet on the wall, gather some fun props, including those party hats, and snap away. 3 . New Year’s Eve bingo: Create bingo cards featur- ing festive staples such as balloons, streamers, con- fetti and noisemakers and have kids fill them out as they spot the elements on televised celebrations. 4 . Year-end photo scavenger hunt: Print out photos of your favourite memories from the past year and hide them around the house. Have kids collect all the photos and then go through them as a family to sort them into chronological order. Kids get to learn about the days and months of the year and everyone gets to reminisce about all the good times shared over the year, it’s a win-win. Create a cute bag or box for kids to store all the photos in after and they’re left with a cute yearly memento. Also feel free to add in non-photo memories such as tickets from that baseball game you took them to or the map from your visit to the zoo. 5 . Balloon pop countdown: Before blowing up bal- loons, print out instructions for fun activities such as blowing bubbles, painting or eating a cupcake and put them inside. Write times on the outside of bal- loons in increments of your choice, such as every half hour. Have kids pop the balloons at the appropriate times up to the time of the ball drop and enjoy the listed activ- ity. If you have little ones who can’t wait for midnight, set your clock to an earlier time zone and follow along with their celebrations on the Internet or a time-shifted cable channel so they can still experience the New Year count- down. Bonus, you get to tell friends you stayed up for the midnight countdown even if you crash early. WORLD VISION Give a gift with meaning by providing chil- dren and residents in developing countries with gifts that keep on giving. Founded in 1947, the Christian relief and development organization works to eradicate poverty and injustice in developing nations, cre- ating lasting change for families, children and communities. Its annual gift catalogue provides numerous options to spur devel- opment, eradicate hunger and improve access to resources. Items include chick- ens, goats, sheep, piglets, chicks, cows, bees and even fish farms, with options starting at $50, to help families cultivate food and earn income from products such as wool, milk and cheese. Shoppers can also directly impact chil- dren’s health by opting to fund medicines for clinics, immunizations for villages, counselling for children from war-torn soci- eties, clean water, education and school lunches, eco-friendly stoves, winter cloth- ing for children, fruit trees and even short- or long-term meal plans for children. Gift cards are also available so recipi- ents can choose their own gifts to give, and other gift items such as jewelry, scarves and Christmas ornaments are also available to give out closer to home while still benefit- ing those in need abroad. HBC FOUNDATION Celebrate Canada’s rich history while helping those in need right here at home with the Hudson’s Bay Company Foundation’s 11th annual Heritage Charity Bear. This year, the bear, which hon- ours an adventurer who helped shape the history of HBC and Canada, is named after Scot- tish physician Dr. William Fra- ser Tolmie, a highly regarded botanist and agriculturalist who helped found Fort Nisqually on Puget Sound. Sales of the Tolmie bear, which is available at the Bay, select Home Outfitters and online at www.thebay. com, benefit the HBC Foundation. Dedicated to improving the lives of Canadians by supporting organiza- tions and initiatives that contribute to healthy families, strong communities and sports excellence, the HBC Foundation has donated more than $77 million since 2005 to organizations including the Canadian Olympic Foundation, Canadian Paralym- pic Committee, Beauty Gives Back, Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Habitat for Humanity Canada. “The HBC Foundation’s Heritage Charity Bear is a beloved program that reflects that company’s rich history and heritage while supporting some very important causes,” said Stephanie Thorn- bury, VP of communications and commu- nity investment for HBC. “This annual program provides a vital source of funding for the HBC Foundation to support charitable programs across Can- ada and we’re proud to continue in this tra- dition of giving back through this wonder- ful initiative.” With only 12,500 bears in production, shoppers should hurry if they want to see this charitable teddy under the tree. It was a moment of childhood magic and one my mother loved to watch. For her, the weeks of shopping, the late-night wrapping with meticulous care culminated in one precious moment when her children’s faces would light up with joy. One Christmas was different. Overly excited and unable to stay in bed, I ventured forth at the ungodly hour of 5 a.m. with my still-sleepy sister in tow. I knew better than to disturb my parents so early, but waiting any longer was unbearable. So with the wisdom of a six year old I decided we would sneak downstairs to see what was under the tree. Surely, a single glance could do no harm. Anyone who knows young children like- ly sees where this story is going. The sincere “just one peak” easily became “Oh, look!” which led to “Let’s play with one toy.” Not sur- prisingly, that turned into “I wonder what’s inside all the presents under the tree?” My mother found us that morning asleep on the sofa, likely exhausted from the adrenalin rush of rabid unwrapping. I can only imag- ine the disappointment she felt as she looked down at shreds of torn Christmas paper, rib- bons and bows strewn about, and a random selection of presents no longer possessing gift tags. Perhaps her greatest disappoint- ment was seeing the Easy-Bake Oven already unpacked with the little cake mix packages laid out on the floor. In our moment of impul- sivity my sister and I had robbed our mother of the opportunity to watch us open the one gift we had wanted for so long. It’s perhaps no surprise that this memo- ry remains firmly engraved in my mind, but it isn’t the unwrapping of presents or play- ing with toys that I remember most. In fact, I barely recall the moment I saw the Easy-Bake Oven. What I remember most is my mother’s disappointment -- the look on her face when my sister and I awakened on the couch, the combination of surprise, sadness and tearful eyes that let us know we had let her down. My sister and I were banished to our bed- room for much of Christmas morning to con- template the error of our ways. When we were finally allowed to come downstairs, the room had been tidied, my mother had regained her composure, and my father had done a valiant job trying to match gifts with recipients. My mother fortunately found humour in the situ- ation and Christmas Day was saved. When my own daughter was older, I shared the story of this Christmas misadventure to explain the importance of giving but also the importance of receiving. My mother gave me that Easy-Bake Oven as a way of saying, “I know you. I love you. And I hope you will make wonderful memories with this gift.” By not receiving the gift with thoughtfulness and care, I failed to respect what the gift meant to her. In a sense, I missed out on the best part of the present. As we enter the holiday season, let’s remind our children not only about the joy of giving but also about the importance of receiving. Let’s help them learn to receive gifts with mindful consideration of the giver, and to show thanks not only for the gift but also for what it represents.
