The Liberals and Conservatives are tied at seven per cent each in our unscientific poll of voter intentions, up from two per cent last week. The NDP is sitting at 86 per cent at the beginning of week six. There is still nearly six weeks to go until election day on Oct. 19, so those numbers could change over the course of the cam- paign. A second victim was pepper-sprayed during the incident, which was reported at about 3:20 p.m. Sept. 14, Durham police said. The confrontation appears to have arisen after the male victim, 39, and a female acquaintance confronted a young woman who was wanted by police, cops said. The young woman broke free and slashed the man, causing a serious injury to his arm, police said. The woman with the victim was assaulted with pepper spray by a young man with the female sus- pect. The woman fled the scene but was apprehended by police on Valley Farm Road. The male suspect took off on a bicy- cle. He’s white, about 20, with a slim build. He wore a white T-shirt and black shorts. Both victims were treated at hospital. Sheila Struthers, 18, of Radford Drive in Ajax, is charged with assault with a weap- on and weapons possession. She was held for a bail hearing. Several officers were involved in the transport of a person in the midst of a mental health epi- sode at Salem Road and Bayly Street shortly after 9 p.m. Sept. 10 when a motorcycle rider stopped beside a cruiser and nodded to the cop inside before weaving between other cruisers and speeding off, Durham police said. The officers were unable to engage the rider but did take note of his licence plate. Minutes later the speeding bike slammed into a Durham Region Transit bus as it made a turn at Harwood Avenue and Kings Crescent, police said. The force of the impact threw the rider, a 37-year-old Toronto man, an estimated 50 feet. The rider was rushed to local hospital, then transferred to a Toronto trauma centre where as of Friday he was listed in serious condition. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 905-579-1520, extension 5213. But there are two types of attack ads. The first engage in valid discussions on the issues: the Liberals’ ad criticizing how Stephen Harper has spent millions on the government’s thinly veiled CPC promotion ads; or maybe even the NDP ad which lists actual Conservatives’ misdeeds. Then there are “ad hominem” attacks. These are scurrilous, unsubstanti- ated attacks are aimed at demeaning the opponent without adding to the conversa- tion: “He’s just not ready.” As compared to whom? JFK was 43 when he became president. Mr. Harper never held any job before going into politics, and had never travelled outside North America. “Can’t afford” And, “Politicians like him never care when it’s our money.” Without qualifying the attacks by pointing to a single one of Tom Mulcair’s platform items. Enough said. One is reminded of the sev- en-year-old who, in a burst of intellectual rigour manages: “You’re stupid.” As you can see, the ad hominem ads are very much the domain of the Conservatives under Mr. Harper. Will use of this type of ad push the voter to join the ABC (Anyone but Conservative) party? It may. You decide. Dirk van der Werf Universal trip highlights quick summer Did I miss summer? It seems like just a few minutes ago my oldest son came home from university in Nova Scotia and the middle son returned from Trent. They have both returned to school so summer must have happened but it disappeared faster than the Maple Leafs chances at a Stanley Cup this year. The highlight of our summer was a week-long trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. I know, why would we go from ‘hot’ to ‘oh-my-God-it’s- hot’ weather? But when you have kids in university and high school, who are all working, you fit in a trip when you can. We had been to Universal before but this trip was solely to visit the two Harry Potter theme parks and they did not disappoint. For any Harry Potter fan they are a must-see. Ninety per cent of the attractions are set up to sell you merchandise but you don’t have to buy any- thing. Just walking around and seeing the stores and watching kids wearing their robes and using their interactive wands is worth the trip. So here are a few tips for anyone planning a trip to Florida and Universal Studios in the next while. • Florida drivers are crazy. They just turn left whenever they feel like it and have no concern about cutting off another driver. Making U-turns at any intersection is also a little strange. • Don’t buy Express passes at Universal. There is no need. For our four days in the park the cost would have been about $2,000 just for those pass- es. We quickly learned that single riders get on just as fast as Express riders. • When the sign says it could be 100 minutes to get on a ride, as it regularly was for the Minions ride, they mean 100 minutes. • Butter beer seemed to be a combination of thick syrup and sugar. Don’t buy more than one until you try it. • Service is tops at Universal as everyone does their best to make sure you have a great time. -- Managing editor Mike Johnston once again got on an airplane and survived to talk about it. Mike Johnston Managing Editor Come and gone Healthy, happy babies in Durham Region Even with the full weight of the law behind her, Anne Tapley was approached by a strange woman and reprimanded for doing nothing wrong. The Durham Region mother was in a cof- fee shop when her infant required feeding and she did the most natural thing in the world and began feeding her child. She was discreet, nursing quietly and mind- ing her own business when the stranger approached, tossed a blanket and scolded her, telling her she should be ashamed. Ms. Tapley’s experience was unpleasant, certainly, and one reason why the Dur- ham Region health department is rolling out a public awareness campaign to pro- mote the right of women to breastfeed their infants in Ontario anywhere and any- time. Residents might come across life- sized cardboard cutouts, being set up in locales across Durham, of real local moth- ers breastfeeding their children. The idea behind the initiative is to build support among residents from Pickering to Newcastle and up to Uxbridge and Scugog to recognize that public breastfeeding can and should be viewed positively. Indeed, the Ontario Human Rights Code explicitly protects women’s rights to do so. Nursing moms must be able to feed their children free of fear or concern that what they are doing might be perceived as wrong. And that’s where the larger community can show its support: by not interrupting or disturbing nursing moth- ers wherever they may be. Local busi- nesses can support the initiative by post- ing ‘breastfeeding welcome here’ decals in shop windows (obtainable through Dur- ham’s health department). In an open and inclusive society such as ours, asking women to cover up, or sham- ing them for doing what comes naturally, is inconsistent with our evolving values. There is nothing unseemly, and certainly nothing ‘dirty’, about a mother feeding her infant in public, whether on a park bench, in a restaurant booth, or on the sidelines of a soccer match. We encourage every resident and busi- ness owner to throw their support behind this initiative, welcome this perfectly nat- ural practice, and embrace new moms in Durham Region who simply want to feed their children and give them the best nour- ishment Mother Nature provides. For more information on the campaign, visit www.durham.ca/health and click on the Pregnancy, Parenting and Child Health link. For more information on breastfeeding resources in Durham, call the health con- nection line at 1-800-841-2729. Huey makes himself at home We have inherited a cat. I am not entirely a stranger to the experience of having a cat in the house. We had the odd cat around when I was a kid and I have even had cats and dogs co-existing under the same roof on a number of occasions since then. But my previous felines always entered the household as kittens. Malleable, imprint- able, accommodating kittens. Not so this time around. Huey, although a very nice, even affec- tionate cat, is a senior. And, like many seniors he is somewhat set in his ways. Having him in the house has been a little like having a rheumy-eyed, arthritic uncle suddenly move in. An old European man whose bladder keeps him up all night and who doesn’t think much of his other four- legged housemates. When he first arrived, of necessity, we kept him safely confined to a bedroom. That way the dogs could get used to his scent and presence and we could gradually assimilate him into the family. Our young- est dog, Dooley, is not a problem. He took a feline swatting as a puppy and has given cats a wide berth since. But Owen, our Lab/Dane cross, has the predatory drive of Donald Trump. Anything that looks small- er or weaker than him is fair game. We needed to go slow with this one. Explain- ing to my stepdaughter that Owen ate her cat was not a conversation that I wanted to have: “Ha ha, hey Ashley ... you wanna hear something funny?” At any rate, after a week or so, things seem to be working themselves out. Owen is still incredibly excited whenever he gets near the cat, but it’s more of a big dumb kid who wants to show the new guy all his stuff than a ‘Boy, do you look yummy’ kind of thing. Huey is no longer barricaded upstairs behind a baby gate. In fact, he has free run of the house. So far, however, he has elected to sit at the top of the stairs and stare bale- fully down at the two wagging tails. I call to him but he just looks at me as though I’m an idiot. “I am not comeenk down zer until you do somezink vis zos two cretins. Do you sink I am nutty in za head? Dogs...Oy.” The other thing I had forgotten about cats is that they are nocturnal. Huey may be ret- icent to make his presence known in the daylight hours, but he is more than happy to share his interests with us at night. Kath- ryn has been startled awake on a number of occasions as a cat happily settled himself across her face and while I am very used to sharing my bed with a snoozing dog or two, I am completely unaccustomed to some- thing excitedly purring around my head at three in the morning. “Hey! Hey, you! Get up! This is incredible. There’s a car going by outside! You’re miss- ing it!” Even funnier was listening to him trying to get up on the bed. As a result of an inju- ry as a kitten, Huey is not the best jumper. But what he lacks in agility he more than makes up for in stubborn determination. I lay there in the dark, chuckling to myself, as he huffed and puffed and clawed his way up the side of the box spring. He sounded like Rosie O’Donnell trying to chin herself. “Umpfff…Hey! Pal? Little help here?” He does make me laugh. And I’ve always got room in my life for somebody or some- thing who does that. -- Durham resident Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m 7 APDuffy trial revelations. The life-sized displays of area moth- ers breastfeeding their children are one part of a new public health campaign that promotes the right of women to breast- feed anywhere, any time. “We all need to support moms breast- feeding in our communities,” said Kath- ryn Cuthbertson, public health nurse with the Durham Region health depart- ment. “The idea is really to promote the idea of breastfeeding in public spaces and bring awareness to a woman’s right to breastfeed, because the Ontario Human Rights Code protects the right to breast- feed any time, anywhere.” However that right is not always reflect- ed in the ideals of society, with media stories of women being shamed while breastfeeding by being asked to move or cover up popping up regularly. “We definitely hear about it in the media so I hope this raises awareness to the fact that breastfeeding is a completely normal way to feed your baby and I hope it gets people talking,” said Ms. Cuth- bertson, noting in addition to the cut- outs, the breastfeeding in public spaces campaign will include bus ads and other advertising in public spaces. She said residents and businesses can get behind the campaign and support breastfeeding by offering breastfeeding friendly spaces -- “breastfeeding wel- come here” decals for business windows can be obtained through the Durham health department -- and not interrupt- ing or disturbing breastfeeding mothers by asking them to move or cover up. Rebecca Munn, a mother of two from Ajax who is featured in the campaign breastfeeding her son Jameson, who was only about a week old at the time, while her daughter Sofia looks on, says she hopes the images inspire other mothers to have the confidence to breastfeed any- where they need to. “I think as women and as a commu- nity it’s our job to support other women, I feel like Durham Region is miles ahead in terms of supporting breastfeeding,” she said, noting she has used many of the breastfeeding resources available in the region, including having a public health nurse visit her home when she was hav- ing trouble breastfeeding with her first child and participating in breastfeeding support programs. “Having a public health nurse come to the house is absolutely amazing, finding a group of people who can support you is so key.” The campaign is a welcome develop- ment for Brooklin mother Anne Tapley, who was shocked to be reprimanded by a stranger while breastfeeding her daugh- ter at a Whitby coffee shop. “I had a bulky shirt on and my daughter was nursing quietly. In fact, I had gotten so good at nursing in public that it just looked like she was sleeping,” Ms. Tapley recalled. “This woman came out of nowhere, grabbed one of my little baby blankets off of my lap and threw it right over top of me and my daughter and told me I should be ashamed and to cover up. I was in com- plete and total shock.” Ms. Tapley said the woman walked out immediately after the confrontation, leaving her sitting there fuming. While she couldn’t respond at the time because she was so shocked, Ms. Tapley said she would have some choice words if a simi- lar incident happened in the future. “From that point on, I was ready if someone else ever had the gall to say something to me,” she said. “There is no reason for me or anyone to be ashamed of feeding a hungry baby anywhere. “After two children, having breastfed both of them exclusively, this was the only ignorant person that ever gave me grief.” Ms. Cuthbertson points to situations like Ms. Tapley’s as good opportunities to raise awareness. “I think that’s a great time to educate people on your rights, tell them ‘I have a right to do this’,” she explains. “A mom should absolutely never feel obligated to move from wherever she is. It’s really just a confidence thing to have the support to stand up for yourself and hopefully that’s something this campaign will give peo- ple.” For Oshawa mother Melissa Batryn- chuk, who has been breastfeeding her son for the past 21 months, feeding in public has been a positive experience. “I haven’t had a bad experience so far; no one has given dirty looks, stares or anything,” she said. “It’s been really great. Even telling peo- ple that I’m still breastfeeding my son hasn’t made anyone bat an eye. I’ve also never used a cover.” Ms. Munn said she hopes that the cam- paign will help every mother have a simi- lar experience to Ms. Batrynchuk’s. “If I can do this and be a part of this campaign and show that I can do it, then anyone can do it,” she said. “I wasn’t ner- vous about it all, more excited and hope- ful that more people will get involved. I think whether you’re a breastfeeding or formula mom, just by being there to support everyone is how you can get involved.” For more information on the campaign, visit www.durham.ca/health and click on the Pregnancy, Parenting and Child Health link. HOW THIS IMPACTS YOU Health Canada and organizations such as the Public Health Agency of Cana- da, Dietitians of Canada, the Canadian Paediatric Society and the College of Family Physicians of Canada recom- mend breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a newborn’s life, with sustained breastfeeding recommend- ed up to two years old and beyond. Some of the benefits of breastfeeding include: • Protection against diarrhea and dehy- dration in infants • Lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome • Protection against obesity into adult- hood • Promotes brain, jaw and tooth devel- opment DURHAM -- A new Durham Region Breastfeeding in Public Campaign encouraging the acceptance of breastfeeding in public spaces includes life-size cutouts of real Durham Region moms breastfeeding. The cutouts will be located in various public buildings around Durham Region, including libraries, community centres and more. Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario President Sam Hammond said in a press conference on Sept. 14 the work-to-rule action “will escalate in the coming weeks unless OPSBA (Ontario Public School Board Association) and the government don’t return to the table. We are prepared to escalate our action unless they come back to the table in the next couple of days.” Since the work-to-rule began, elemen- tary teachers have stopped taking part in field trips, fundraising, board meetings and teacher training. The teachers will be allowed to continue participating in voluntary extracurricular activities. The Province reached deals with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation and the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association. Education Minis- ter Liz Sandals said of the latest deal offered to ETFO, “What is on the table is essential- ly an elementary ver- sion of the tentative agreement we have achieved with OSSTF.” The three-year deals with the high school and Catholic teachers include a small wage increase, an extra professional develop- ment day and retains current class sizes and prep time provisions. Mr. Hammond said, “Elementary teachers’ conditions are different than a high school teachers.” The latest offer “doesn’t address the unique needs of elementary teachers. Our (local) presidents solidly support us. We’ll continue to work-to-rule,” Mr. Hammond added. “A student who is six years old has dif- ferent educational needs than a student who is sixteen. Anyone with children knows that’s true. As a result, elementary teachers’ working needs will be different than secondary teachers, so the impo- sition of a cookie-cutter deal just won’t work,” he noted. The latest round of negotiations broke off on Friday, Sept. 11 after seven days of bargaining. Premier Kathleen Wynne said “the concern that I have” is that elementary students may see “some disruption” at their schools. “We’ve been very, very pleased to be able to come to ... tentative agreements with the secondary school teachers and the English Catholic teachers,” she said. “The onus is going to be on ETFO and on the leadership of ETFO to explain why (those deals) ... are not good enough for their membership,” the premier said. But Ms. Wynne refused to speculate on whether the government would take the deal directly to ETFO members as a final offer. “I’m not going pre-empt the process.” Ms. Sandals added that she would not “speculate” on next steps. “It’s really going to be up to Sam Ham- mond and ETFO to explain ... why they would reject what everyone else is accepting.” Mr. Hammond said he won’t negotiate through the media and he urged the Pre- mier and other government officials to “stay out of the media and get back to the table and bargain.” He said working conditions and not salary is the key to the bargaining. -- with files from Torstar News Service Sam Hammond Ajax Eid fundraiser to help Syrian refugees Event takes place Sept. 18 DURHAM -- The Durham Region Mus- lim Moms and Hayat HR are hosting Eid-Al-Adha Mela with a Cause at the Audley Recreation Centre in Ajax. Durham police issue more than 1,000 tickets during annual safety blitz near schools Region-wide Back In The Zone initiative targets speeding, distracted driving DURHAM -- Dozens of motorists, including one accused of drunk driv- ing, were charged when Durham police conducted their annual back-to-school safety blitz last week. The Back In The Zone initiative saw cops monitoring traffic at school zones throughout the region from the first day of school Sept. 8, until Sept. 11. Officers were on the lookout for dangerous behaviours including speeding and distract- ed driving. During the week officers issued 1,017 tickets, including 543 speeding infrac- tions and 25 dis- tracted driving charges, police said. In addition, a 37-year-old Whitby woman was charged with driving while exceeding the legal blood alcohol level after being stopped for speeding in a school zone in Port Perry on Sept. 8, the first day of school, police said. Last year’s blitz saw more than 1,200 tickets handed out to drivers. 7 5 M i l n e r A v e. , T o r o n t o |w w w . g e r v a i s r e n t a l s . c o m 9 0 5 - 4 2 6 - R E N T |1 - 8 8 8 - G E R V A I S Anytime,Anywhere,Anyway... DURHAM -- The taxman scam is back, and Durham cops are warning residents to be on guard against it. Police issued an alert Friday to inform residents that attempts to defraud citi- zens by way of phone calls are continu- ing “at an alarming rate”. One scam making the rounds right now has fraudsters claiming to be Can- ada Revenue Agency reps and making demands for immediate payment of outstanding taxes. Threatening victims with arrest, the criminals demand payment in the form of prepaid credit cards, electron- ic money transfers and, most recently, money orders, police said. Seven such incidents were reported in the Pickering-Ajax area on Friday, police said. “No reputable company or organiza- tion will advise you to make payments in these ways,” police advise. “If you receive such a call, hang up and report the call to police.” Cops advise residents to be on their guard, and to pass along words of cau- tion to vulnerable people such as seniors. Case in point the Pickering Panthers, who started the Ontario Junior Hockey League season with a pair of losses, but could have just as easily produced a couple of wins. Opening on home ice at the Pickering Rec- reation Complex, the Panthers lost 5-4 to the Newmarket Hurricanes on Friday, Sept. 11, and were blanked 3-0 by the Lindsay Muskies on Sunday, Sept. 13. In the loss to Newmarket, the visitors scored the winner with just 1:47 left in the game. Against Lindsay, the Panthers failed to score despite holding a 43-25 shots on goal advantage. “We were right there in both games. Friday there was only 1:47 when they scored,” said head coach Matt Carroll. “Sunday (Lindsay goaltender Boyd Diclemente) saw a lot of shots. We started to give him traffic and he stayed on. On some rebounds he made a couple good saves. We had our chances but he was pretty hot. “This weekend I had us winning four of the six periods through those two games.” In the loss to Newmarket, Doug Carter, John Hudgin, Owen Scuralli and Blake Cof- fey netted goals for the Panthers, who were even 1-1 after the first but down 4-1 through two periods. Getting blanked by Lindsay in the second game isn’t something Carroll expects will happen too often this season. “We keep telling our guys we are going to get four a night,” he said. “When we look around we have a lot of talent and skill. A lot of guys can put the puck in the net. “What we’re trying to teach them is to keep the puck out of our net. I think we are going to get three or four a night and that will be enough to win. If we can keep it down to one or two a night, we are going to have success.” The key will be exercising patience early on, rotating players in and out of the line- up and alternating goalies for the opening 16-20 games, Carroll added. One of the players who would have espe- cially liked a reversal of outcome in the Lind- say game was Mackenzie Heber, who was traded from the Muskies to the Panthers in the summer. Last season, his first in the OJHL after graduating from the Ajax-Pick- ering Raiders, where he captained the team coached by Carroll, Heber had a goal and two assists in 42 games. “I was very excited. I couldn’t wait to get back home, especially my home rink and where I’ve always grown up and played,” said the 19 year old, who has been named an assistant captain. “It’s great being able to play and having people in my hometown coming to watch me.” While the mood in the dressing room would have been significantly different with a couple of wins, or even a split, Heber said it’s way too early for any concern or panic. “Everyone was mad and disappointed, but it’s only two games into the season. You can’t get down on yourself,” he said. “Everyone knows it’s a long road. There’s 54 games in the season and that’s only two of them. We know we are going to be a good team and there is nothing to worry about.” The Panthers will get two more cracks at it again this weekend when they host Stouffville on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m., and Burlington on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. PICKERING -- Pickering Panthers’ Doug Carter made a move against Newmarket Hurricanes’ Nick Kalpouzos during their Ontario Junior Hockey League season opener at the Pickering Recreation Complex. The Hurricanes beat the Panthers 5-4. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland Panthers come up empty in openers Braxton Stone- Papadopoulos is Olympic bound PICKERING — Braxton Stone-Papado- poulos has booked a ticket to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The Pickering wrestler and member of Team Impact finished fifth in the 63kg weight class at the senior world champion- ships in Las Vegas, automatically qualify- ing her for next year’s Olympics. Fresh off a bronze-medal win at the junior world championships in Salvador, Brazil in August, the 20 year old started with a bye into the round of eight. In her opening bout, Stone-Papadopoulos domi- nantly beat Giedre Blekaityte of Lithuania 14-4. In her next bout she was against Yekaterina Larionova (KAZ). Stone-Papa- dopoulos fought back to win the quarter- final 10-6. With the win, she automatically qualified in her weight class for Rio. In her semifinal match against Japan, Stone-Papadopoulos lost the bout by fall, but moved on to fight for a medal in the evening’s bronze-medal final. Stone-Papadopoulos met Yulia Tkach Ostapchuk of Ukraine. The Ukrainian wres- tler put two points on the board first, and the first period stayed that way until the half. In the second half, with Ostapchuk up by six, Stone-Papadopoulos became more aggressive, earning two and then another two points. At 6-4 with 30 seconds to go, another point for her opponent’s cautious wrestling was awarded to Stone-Papado- poulos. In the end the Ukrainian wrestler managed to stay out of trouble for the final seconds and Stone-Papadopoulos settled for fifth. The Panthers came out on top to win their pool, defeating the Leaside Flames 3-2, Toronto Eagles 4-0, Kent Cobras 9-1 and taking a tight loss to the Don Mills Mustangs 2-1. In the semifinals, the Panthers faced the Humberview Huskies and dominated the game. Their 2-1 victory secured them a spot in the finals and a chance at a rematch against the undefeated Don Mills Mustangs. Hungry for another crack at the Mustangs, the Panthers fought back from an early two-goal def- icit. The Panthers stayed focused on the task at hand and tied the game 2-2 in the second period. In the third, the Panthers took an early lead, but the Mustangs quickly answered with a goal of their own. The back and forth continued, with the Panthers put- ting another one in the back of the net, only to have the Mustangs tie it up with 1:06 to go in the third. The game ended in a tie, leading to a three-on-three overtime bat- tle. After only one minute of play, the Panthers finished the job with a breakaway goal. The Panthers’ entire lineup moved the puck, the forwards were hard on the forecheck win- ning most of the battles, the defence got the puck out of the defensive zone, and the goalies made key saves throughout the tournament. In the end, it was the solid team play that proved to be the key ingredient in winning gold. Team members include Ethan Minogue, Ashton Smith, Mitchell Drummond, Carter Long, Dan- iel Crimi, Ryleigh Horlock, Jacob York, Jaden Carducci, Nico Groza, Declan Younis, Nicole York, Ethan Joseph, Brandon Morsillo, Blake Heselden, Justice Smith, Cali Tierney and Hunter Casey. March 15, 1935 - September 11, 2015. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Camilla, a woman of character and grace. Camilla laughed easily and sang constantly. She had a great love of art, theatre and classical music. But by far her greatest love was the unconditional love of family. Camilla was the loving mother of Christine, Steven (Christine) and Maurice (Laura). The cherished Granny of Breanne, Joshua, Adam, Eric, Laura, Julian and Cameron, and the adored Great Granny of Maurice, Nicholas, Elijah and Zayne. Always ready for company with a fresh pot of tea and homemade coffee cake. For this and so much more, we grieve and find great comfort surrounded by those she left behind. Forever in our hearts. Visitation will be held Sunday September 20, 2015 from 2pm to 4pm at LVIV HALL, 38 LVIV Blvd, Oshawa. A Celebration of Camilla's life will be held at CHRIST CHURCH, 81 Hillcroft St., Oshawa, Monday September 21, 2015 at 11am. Followed by light refreshments. Safe Families Safe Pets - Durham is a new program that lets a woman fleeing abuse get her pet out of the house as well. The program needs volunteers to foster the animals while the women stay in shelters until they get a new place to live.
