Kyle Faller, the president of the Pickering High School Electric Car Club, unveiled the result of many years of hard work on June 4 to an excited crowd of students at the school. “We have been working on it for four years now and this is it,” Kyle, 17, said to the crowd that day. On June 6, the car competed in the Waterloo High School Electric Vehicle Challenge at the University of Waterloo, which encourages students to design and test their own electric car in an annual endurance competition. “We’re really proud of it,” Mr. Faller said of the car. “We really built it from the ground up. The bodywork is what we’re most proud of.” He was also pleased to report the team used an AC drive system. “Most other competitors will use a DC motor which is a little more basic -- you can pull the circuit offline,” he said. “We’ve completely made this circuit from scratch. It was pretty much up to us to see if it was going to work or not, and luckily it does.” The team made it past inspection at the competition and got the car on the track but “unfortunately not too far in we had an issue with the chain tensioner and our inverter unit and were unable to complete the race,” Kyle explained in an e-mail. But the team didn’t go home empty emp- ty-handed and was awarded Rookie Team of the Year “for the innovation and utter impressiveness of our car,” he said. The school received a banner, as well as hats and expensive batteries, which the team is expected to use in the competition next year. Kyle is graduating high school this spring, and will study mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo in September. He said he’s looking forward to being part of the Waterloo Formula Hybrid team. He said “this car will always be my first, my baby, and ingrained in my memory along with the people I built it with as I move forward with my career goals in the automotive industry.” The car was built with the help of about $5,000 in sponsorship money. AJAX -- Kyle Faller, left, president of the Pickering High School’s electric car club, drove out the fully electric, single seat, light- weight car that the students unveiled after four years of work. The students competed with their car at Waterloo University’s electric car race. Pachi dolls and tickets up for grabs this weekend Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com AJAX -- The Town is giving away Pachi dolls and tickets to the Pan Am Games, but you’re going to have to use some brain power to get them. The Town is giving away 80 Pachi dolls and four pairs of tickets to softball or baseball games being played in Ajax dur- ing the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games. The giveaways will be at four locations around the community and it’s all happening on Saturday, June 13. Pachi is the official mascot of the Games. Rachael Wraith, senior communica- tions officer for Ajax, said the Town has been providing hints about the locations and “the locations will be revealed 15 minutes before.” Twenty Pachi dolls will be given away at each location, along with a pair of tickets. “We’ve provided hints on the location and timing. People will be able to figure it out before Saturday,” she said. Visit the Town’s Pan Am dedicated web- site at www.panamajax.ca for locations on where hints can be found. With each location, a password is pro- vided and “to win, you have to provide the password,” she said. “Teams will be there waiting for people to arrive.” Town staff will be at the first location between 10 and 11 a.m. and the hint is it’s the official Pan Am Ajax volunteer sponsor. The hint for the second loca- tion is it’s an official food supplier to Pan Am athletes and Town officials will be at the location from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Teams will be at the third location between 12:30 and 1:15 p.m. and the hint is it’s the place where the torch relay began in Ajax on June 6. Those taking part can head to the fourth location between 1:30 and 2 p.m. and the hint is it reopened in 2011 and it’s a popular destination to cool off in the summer. The Town is also offer- ing free swimming at the outdoor Ajax Memorial Pool on Saturday. “It’s all free. It’s a great way to get into the spirit of the Games,” Ms. Wraith said. -- Metroland Media Group Ltd. is a signature sponsor of the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games Torch Relay, presented by Presidents Choice and OLG. The dog was on a leash. Suddenly, two dogs not on leashes came charging towards us. No owner was in sight at this point. I had to scoop up my granddaughter and try to hold on to the English bulldog. Not an easy feat. Shortly afterward, the owner appeared around the corner. I told him I was unsure of the dogs. He was obviously not pleased that I had yelled at his dogs. When I eventually turned around to go home, again one of the dogs came charg- ing at me. The other was on a leash. I repeated my protection of my grand- daughter. This was the second such inci- dence I have encountered. Unfortunate- ly, I will no longer be able to use these lovely trails as some people think they are off-leash areas for dogs. These trails should be for everyone to use. Dogs need to be on their leashes. Pickering’s plan is almost 20 years old, although it’s due for a makeover this year or next. At present, Richard Holborn, the City’s director of engineering and public works, says cycling routes are being added “on an ad hoc basis” as roadwork is done. One recent example he cited was adding bike lanes when a portion of Glennana Road was re-surfaced, “because we had the pavement to do it.” But adding bike lanes in a piecemeal fashion is no strategy. It’s a different story in Ajax, one of four Ontario municipalities which in 2011 earned the Bicycle Friendly Communi- ties Designation from the Share the Road Cycling Coalition. Ajax has had a pedes- trian and bicycle master plan since 2010. It’s a plan that not only addresses cycling, but also making your way from Point A to B without the use of machines, so it also includes walking and rolling. Ajax has a 90-kilometre and expanding interconnected trail system and is home to a growing network of Ontario by Bike businesses. True, it doesn’t hurt that Mayor Steve Parish is an active and enthusiastic cyclist who leads the annual Trailfest. But cycling in Ajax is linked to its broader encourage- ment of healthy activity and environmen- tal responsibility. Road cycling is ever-popular, a sport that doesn’t require a gym membership or lots of fancy and expensive equipment, apart from the bike and helmet. It’s something young and old can do together and, unlike using a machine at the gym, you’re going places and seeing things. Pickering may be a bit slow off the mark in terms of an overall strategy, but it’s never too late to make strides in this direction and the good news is that more cycling routes are being added in the city. We encourage Pickering to update its plan or, better yet, create a new one as soon as possible, as is proposed. Stay tuned for public meetings and informa- tion centres as a number of new multi-use trails have already been floated. Our ini- tial comment on looking at the list is that linking trail sections is crucial and a num- ber of the routes being considered are incredibly short. -- Ajax Pickering News Advertiser Pickering could learn from Ajax cycling plan Oshawa’s Steve Burrows wins Arthur Ellis crime writing award Durham has another award-winning author. Last month, Oshawa resident Steve Burrows won the Arthur Ellis award for best first novel for A Siege of Bit- terns. “It’s a real thrill,” said the author, who was in the Northwest Territories on tour with his second novel, A Pitying of Doves, when the awards were announced last month. He added he’s amazed by the success of his first book, which mixed the world of crime fiction with the world of birders in England, courtesy of a police detective who solves murders and knows his birds. It’s shortlisted for another award, the Kobo Emerging Writers prize. It’s a good read, even if you don’t know much about birds. Mr. Burrows, who was born in Britain, came to Oshawa after six years in Hong Kong, where he was field editor for Asian Geographic. He received the Nature Writer of the Year award from BBC Wildlife. When he settled here, he decided to “have a bash at fiction,” he explained. Since the ubiquitous “they” said write what you know, he settled on birding. And an affin- ity to murder mysteries got added to the mix. He’s been a birder since he was a child growing up in the big English city of Birmingham, becoming interest- ed in nature when his parents took him on visits to the countryside to find greenspaces. Since he writes murder mysteries, he writes back- ward, in a way. “You have to have an end and know who done it and why and how it happens,” then fill in the rest of the story, he said. He originally planned a trilogy of birder mysteries but he’s talking with his publishers, Dundurn Press, about four or five books in the series. Mr. Burrows said he’s received great support from Oshawa Public Libraries and was delighted to spot his book in several locations when he walked through the Oshawa Chapters store at Christmas. He’ll be signing both of his books at the Oshawa Costco on June 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. He’ll also be at Blue Heron Books in Uxbridge from 2 to 4 p.m. on June 20. A message from Durham Tourism After a long winter in storage your sneakers and sandals are lined up at the front door waiting for a big day out. Indulge them -- and yourself -- with one of these fabulous ways to have fun and enjoy the great out- doors in Durham Region. 1. Treetop Adventure Get a new perspective on life with an obstacle course in the trees. If you haven’t yet checked it out, this is the perfect time to visit Oshawa’s Treetop Eco-Adventure Park. Walk, zip-line or climb  your way through the cool afternoon shade or even the moonlight. Yes, this month you can enjoy one of two special (and spooky) night climbs. To keep the adrenaline flowing by day, try combat archery or soar across the canyon zip. This is a unique way to have a heart-pumping adventure close to home. Visit www.treetopeco-adventurepark.com for photos and details. 2. Paddleboarding A cross between a surfboard, a kayak and a mini dock, the paddleboard is one of my favourite new ways to take my swim to the next level. On a calm morning I can take a soothing cruise across the water’s surface or use it as a platform for mid-lake yoga. It’s also the perfect stage for a serious- ly strenuous workout -- especially when a refreshing plunge is mere inches away. To give paddleboarding a try, rent equip- ment or take classes, there are two local companies ready to set you up: Port Perry SUP (portperrypaddleboard.blogspot. com), Zenfit (zenfit.ca) and Yogata (yogata. ca). Give them a call this month and try some- thing new. 3. Fishing Serious anglers know that with borders on lakes Ontario, Scugog and Simcoe and with major rivers starting in the Oak Ridges Moraine, Durham is a prime fishing desti- nation. Lake Scugog is prime location for wall- eye, jumbo perch, crappies and large- mouth bass. Lake Ontario and connecting streams are ideal for rainbow trout fishing year-round. Beaverton Harbour, on Lake Simcoe, is home to warm-water jumbo perch, cold- water lake trout, burbot, pike and white- fish. Durham’s many conservation areas also offer protected river fishing. As long as you have a valid Ontario fishing license and are following Ontario fishing regulations, which allow for specific fish to be caught during specific seasons and in certain areas, you’ll be set. For a full list of all fish and their respective seasons, visit the Min- istry of Natural Resources website at www. mnr.gov.on.ca. 4. Cycling I’m in awe of the fact that there are 350 kilometres of recreational trails in Durham. What an adventure it would be to explore them all. From the open road to waterfront trails to shady forest pathways, it’s easy to create your own perfect journey. Get a copy of Durham Cycle Tours map or the Dur- ham Trails website to discover the perfect route and nearby amenities. Surely you’ll deserve an ice cream break after all of that pedalling. For a list of Bike Month events happening across Durham Region this month, visit www.bikemonth.ca, or con- nect with @BikeMonth on Twitter by using #BikeMonth. 5. Golf Fun, challenging and a great way to get in a walk, golf is a classic summer sport for a reason. And with nearly 50 golf courses throughout Durham Region, you’ll be sure to find a course to suit your price range and ability. Head out with friends and stroll along the fairway while enjoying conversation and perfecting your swing. It’s also a great way to spend time as a family. It seems we’re nearly all related to an avid golfer eager to offer a few pointers to the novices. Find a course near you or explore greens farther afield and get out golfing this sum- mer. However you choose to stay active this summer, I wish you many happy days exploring the outdoors in Durham Region. As roads are improved in the City of Pickering, how to facilitate the growing number of cyclists is getting higher up on the priority list. In fact, cycling has become much more of an integral part of infrastructure in Pickering than it was 15 or 20 years ago. Mr. Holborn explained the City has a trails and bikeway master plan but it dates back to 1996, and staff plans to update it in the near future. “It’s still on our horizon to update that and bring it forward in 2015 and 2016 if you will,” he said. This plan will determine where addi- tional cycling routes are needed within the city, as well as connections to the future Seaton communities. “There’s no one-size-fits-all. You have to look at each road individually,” said Mr. Holborn. The City is involved in the Smart Com- mute program, which is celebrating Bike Month, taking place from May 25 to June 25. Pickering took part in Bike To Work Day at the end of May, and also wants its residents to know the benefits of cycling as a mode of transportation, as well as for sustainability and physical activity benefits. “There’s zero emissions from cycling,” said Chantal Whitaker, Pickering’s sus- tainability co-ordinator. “We are also encouraging people to do it because it’s a really unique way to dis- cover your community.” Ajax is making strides to encourage more and more residents to cycle on a daily basis. On the Town of Ajax website, it notes every day, Durham residents make 800,000-plus private car trips that are less than six kilometres. Ajax wants to change that and has the Ajax pedestrian and bicycle master plan, approved in 2010. This plan includes a comprehensive strategy of policies and guidelines for active transporta- tion, namely getting around by walk- ing, cycling, rolling or by any means that uses muscular power. Due to Pickering’s outdated plan but a need to build cycling infrastructure, the City chooses where to add in cycling routes as reconstruction and resurfacing of roads comes up. “Right now we’re just doing it on an ad hoc basis,” said Mr. Holborn. “When we resurfaced Glenanna Road from Pickering Parkway to Dixie Road we actually put in some bike lanes on the road because we had the pavement to do it,” said Mr. Holborn. Other roads in the city that have paved bike lanes include: a two-kilometre stretch on Rosebank Road from Shep- pard Avenue to Finch Avenue; another stretch of the same distance on Fairport Road from Sheppard Avenue to Finch Avenue; and on Twyn Rivers from Ash- wood Gate to the city limit for 1.2 kilo- metres. Mr. Holborn said if the City doesn’t think it can accommodate a bike lane, it’s looking at off-road multi-use trails instead. “We’ve done that on Pickering Park- way. We’ll do that on regional roads as well,” he said. The city has multi-use paved shoul- ders on several streets, including: a 1.2-kilometre stretch on Rougemount Drive from Toynevale Road to Rosebank Road and on Oakwood Drive from Toy- nevale Road to Rougemount Drive for .8 kilometres. Other areas that have off-road multi- use trails include the Waterfront Trail from the Ajax/Pickering border to Scar- borough for 12 kilometres; the Trans- Canada Trail for 14 kilometres on and off mixed surfacing and the West Duffins Trail for 3.5 kilometres. “We have a beautiful Waterfront Trail. You can go all along the lakeshore. There’s lovely scenery and shops,” said Ms. Whitaker. Mr. Holborn said since people have different opinions on whether bike lanes would benefit a specific area of Pickering, the City plans to consult resi- dents on their thoughts when the cycling plan is updated. Residents should stay posted for pub- lic meetings and information centres as part of the planning process. Visit www.bikemonth.ca/events for a list of cycling events happening through- out Durham during Bike Month. Cycling and the city HOW THIS IMPACTS YOU • The City of Pickering plans to update its trails and bikeway master plan. • The public will be consulted as the City plans more cycling routes throughout Pickering. • Cycling benefits a person’s physical health, the environment and allows residents to see their community in a new light. Trustees voted June 1 to strike an ad hoc special education political action committee. Changes to how the Ministry of Educa- tion funds special education means the DDSB stands to lose $1.5 million over four years. “Those cuts impact our students who have special needs and the programs and services which we can provide to our most vulnerable students,” says Scu- gog Trustee Carolyn Morton, who made the motion to create the committee. The DDSB plans to cut several special education programs for the upcoming school year, including three out of four learning strategies classes and all five kindergarten language classes. Behaviour intervention classes will be reduced from five to two. At the same time that provincial fund- ing is dropping, Trustee Morton says the number of DDSB students who need extra support is increasing. About 17 per cent of DDSB students have identified learning needs, which works out to 12,000 children. “We need to raise government and community awareness about what is happening,” she says. The political action committee will likely include trustees, members of the board’s special education advisory com- mittee and members of the public. Its goal will be a political action cam- paign to pressure the Ministry of Edu- cation to “right size” the DDSB’s special education funding. The 2015/2016 school year is the sec- ond of a four-year change to how the ministry funds special education. “The ministry will say we have right amount of dollars...but the recent change means some boards are win- ners and some are losers,” says Oshawa Trustee and Board Chairman Michael Barrett. “For example, the Peel board got additional funding, and some of that is coming out of money that we gave up. The reality is, we have more kids in our board that have been identified, but we have less dollars.” Ministry of Education spokesman Gary Wheeler said in an earlier statement that the government is increasing over- all funding for special education and that the DDSB is projected to receive more than $95 million for the 2015/2016 school year -- an increase of 80 per cent since 2003. “In response to requests from school boards across the province for more effective funding, the ministry devel- oped a more fair and equitable way to distribute one portion of special educa- tion funding so that boards can be more responsive to the needs of their local students with special education needs,” he said. “School boards are responsible for using their total funding allocation to provide the special education programs and services to meet the needs of their students.” The new committee is expected to start meeting this month. For example, in 2007/2008 the DDSB rate was 6.6 per cent, com- pared with a provincial average of 4.5 per cent. “Right now, we’re sta- tistically similar,” says DDSB super- intendent John Bowyer. “Both the province and DDSB numbers are being reduced.” In 2012/2013 there were 2,722 DDSB students suspended -- 2,082 in high school and 640 in elemen- tary school. New data shows that number dropped to 2,373 in 2013/2014. Mr. Bowyer says one reason the DDSB’s rate has traditionally been higher than the provincial average, is because local administrators have been trained to complete paper- work for all suspensions -- even those lasting one day or part of a day -- something not all boards do. A suspension means students are removed from school for a speci- fied period of time ranging from one to 20 days. A school principal is the only one with the authority to issue a suspension. There are situations when princi- pals may consider suspension for a student, such as threatening bodily harm, being under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, swearing at a person in authority, vandalizing school property and bullying. In other situations a principal is required to issue a suspension. Those include having a weapon at school, sexual assault, hurting some- one to the extent that they need medical atten- tion, selling weapons or illegal drugs or giving alcohol to someone under 19. Mr. Bowyer says the DDSB is reducing suspen- sions by using a new “progressive discipline” model, which aims to reinforce positive behav- iour and help students make good choices. “We progressively use different strategies and ideas in order to try to re-engage the student in a positive matter,” he notes. The report says anti-bullying initiatives, credit recovery programs, mental health supports and specialist high skills majors for high school stu- dents are also helping to decrease suspension numbers. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 1 1 , 2 0 1 5 17 P Actinic KeratosisStudy Dry,rough, scalyskinspots? The move could be a precursor to a province-wide strike in September. High school teachers in Durham were on strike for about six weeks, starting on April 20. They, along with counterparts in Sudbury and Peel Region, were ordered back to work in late May. The Ontario Labour Board will now appoint a conciliator to sit down with the teachers’ union and the Province. If an agreement isn’t reached, the union could then request a ‘no- board report’, which could lead to a strike. In recognition of National Flag of Can- ada Day in February, it was announced that Mr. Noonan was one of 50 Canadi- ans who would get the flag. He recent- ly received it, along with congratulatory letters, including one from Prime Minis- ter Stephen Harper, at a ceremony at the Petticoat Creek Library. The retired school principal and vol- unteer is heavily involved with the Altona Forest in Pickering and is a pro- ponent of the Rouge National Urban Park. He serves on park committees, con- tributes to many environmental initia- tives, and leads various groups on local hikes. Mr. Noonan answered five questions from the News Advertiser. Q & A Q: How did it feel when you learned you were one of 50 Canadians to receive the flag? A: When I was informed that I was one of the 50 Canadians to receive a Cana- dian flag commemorating 50 years of our national flag, I was surprised and then very pleased to be honoured in this way. It was a very humbling experience. Q: Why have you chosen to dedicate so much of your time to contribute to local environmental initiatives? A: A lot of what I do is connected to stu- dents or teaching about the environment. I am a retired teacher and principal and I have always enjoyed teaching and coach- ing. I coach sports teams but also student teams who compete in environmental competitions such as an Ontario Forest- ry Association’s Tree Bee, which is a tree identification and conservation competi- tion for Grades 4 to 6. My St. Monica team is the current provincial champion in Tree Bee. It is very rewarding to see students, young and not so young, appreciate nature and take ownership and care about the well-being of the nature around us. Q: What has been the most rewarding part of volunteering in the community? A: The rewards of volunteering are great. Some of these are watching and helping people learn and become interested in acquiring more information about nature. I help people find volunteering opportu- nities so they can get more involved and give back to the environment in appropri- ate ways. Q: What message do you have for young people who are interested in the envi- ronment and want to make a difference themselves? A: The message is get involved. This can be as simple as making sure that they help their families recycle everything possi- ble or it can be volunteering on commu- nity cleanup days or planting trees where needed on tree planting days. For those who want more involvement, they can par- ticipate with a local stewardship commit- tee such as the Altona Forest Stewardship Committee. Q: What are some of your favourite plac- es to take in nature in Pickering? A: I have three favourite places to take people to see nature in Pickering. One is Altona Forest. I or other members of the Altona Forest Stewardship Commit- tee have led hundreds of school children, Scout or Guide groups, as well as many adult groups on hikes into this forest. Hikes are announced in the News Adver- tiser. Another favourite place is the Rouge Park which can be accessed from a num- ber of Pickering entrances. We are very lucky in Pickering to be neighbours to the Rouge National Urban Park. This park will provide numerous opportunities to enjoy nature and get involved. Seven conducted hikes are offered every week in the Rouge. Then there is the very popular Seaton Trail which goes from Rossland Road west of Brock Road to Hwy. 7 near Green River. Shoes that don’t bend or twist will provide the support your child needs. • Make sure the base of the footwear matches the length and shape of your child’s feet. If his or her feet are too wide or his or her heel or toes hang over the edge, they are not right. • Don’t buy shoes with “room to grow”. Shoes that are too long or too wide may cause or aggravate underlying foot problems. • Never pass shoes down from child to child as the wear patterns created by the first child will not properly support the next child’s unique foot shape and needs. • If your child insists on flip flops for everyday wear, look for features that provide more support, such as supportive footbeds, adjustable straps, thicker soles and deep heel cups. www.newscanada.com RonaldJ.Klein,D.P.M. Dreams, visions, deep self-examina- tion and conversational exchanges with like-minded souls are the fodder for her acrylic-on-canvas paintings. The titles of her works -- Never Lose Hope, Passion, Redemption, Emerg- ing, Mysterious, Unbound -- provide a window to the meaning she derives and reflects to her world in conceiving and creating them. Born of Russian lineage into a fam- ily of professional architects in Uzbeki- stan, Malitskaya studied painting, draw- ing and composition at art college in Tashkent. After a brief stint at freelance graphic design, she continued her stud- ies at the National Institute of Art and Design. Following a period of continued art experimentation -- and, ultimately, feel- ing frustrated by the conservative restric- tions on painting subjects and artistic expression in her native land -- Malits- kaya decided to broaden her art horizons by coming to Canada, to Ajax as a live-in caregiver in 2012. Once her committed work period here was finished, Malitskaya applied for and received permanent resident status and began to work at freelance graphic design and making fine art in earnest. She is in the process of fashioning a cir- cle of artists, friends, resources and dis- play opportunities in efforts to support her burning drive to express her deepest feelings and learnings to a wider audi- ence. Her first exhibition experience was in early 2013 at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto in a group show called Mixed Art and Music. She followed that up with participation in the Colour of Life group show at Cultural Expressions Art Gallery in Ajax in November of last year. A small solo show at Stevenson Farm B and B fol- lowed early this year. And in April Malits- kaya collaborated with photographer Stephen Milne to create a series of pho- tography-based artworks for the Dark Room 4.0 exhibition in Toronto. The diminutive, passionate and viva- cious artist is highly excited about her potential to engage in making and show- ing art in her adopted land. She plans to look for opportunities to paint and create outdoor and pub- lic installations, her ideal fantasy proj- ect being the creation of a mural in a Toronto subway station, an installation that would fulfil her wish to reach a wide audience who would never see her work in formal gallery circumstances. It was a bit of deja vu for the team in reaching the gold-medal game against St. Edmund Campion, a team St. Mary faced three years ago in the final. History repeated itself this time around, as St. Mary lost 6-1 to St. Edmund Campion, who have won five of the past seven OFSAA championships. “Our boys played their hearts out the entire tournament and never gave up,” said head coach Scott McDavid in an e-mail. “We had so many injuries but they didn’t quit once. The entire St. Mary community is so proud of them winning the silver. There were so many parents, teachers and prin- cipals that showed up to watch them play their hearts out.” St. Mary recorded one of each result in pool play, with a win, loss and tie to their credit. They beat St. Michael’s College 5-1, tied Cameron Heights 2-2 and lost to St. Edmund Campion 7-1. The win and tie were enough to place St. Mary second in their pool, advancing them to the quarter- finals. In the playoff they beat Michael Power/St. Josephs 3-2 in a shootout, then needed dou- ble overtime to prevail 2-1 over Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the semifinals, advancing them to the gold-medal game. Submitted photo St. Mary Monarchs win soccer silver at OFSAA ‘Bad Boy’ getting anxious as title fight nears Brandon Cook to box at Ajax Community Centre on June 27 Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- These are anxious days for Bran- don Cook. The ‘Bad Boy’ is counting the days until he steps into the boxing ring on Satur- day, June 27 in what is expected to be an electric atmosphere at the Ajax Commu- nity Centre, as he fights in his hometown for the WBA Intercontinental champi- onship against Austria’s Gogi Knezevic in a 12-round super welterweight (154 pounds) fight. “This next week, we have to go hard. It’s go big or go home. This is the hardest I’ve ever trained. I feel really good. I’m get- ting anxious,” he said on Tuesday, June 9 during an evening meet and greet at the OLG Slots at Ajax Downs, one of the sponsors of the show. “All the work I’ve been putting in comes down to this fight. I need to win this fight. I want to be at the top. If I win this, we are going to get a big fight. I’m putting every- thing on the line for this show.” Cook, who holds both the NABA Cana- dian middleweight (160 pounds), and Canadian super welterweight (154 pounds) championship belts, had to relinquish both titles to take this fight, which, with a win, would continue his ascent up the world rankings. He carries a 14-0-0 record with eight knockouts into the championship bout. In Knezevic, 35, Cook will be facing a seasoned veteran with a lot of experience against quality fighters. The Austrian is 28-5-1 with 12 knockouts and has been in the ring for nine title fights over the course of his career. Cook’s trainer, Mike Guyett, has a game plan in place, and is well aware of the credentials Knezevic has. “I put the game plan together, it’s orchestrated by the both of us, but he has to get in there and execute,” said Guy- ett. “I expect (Cook) to go in there and do what he always does, dig hard to the body, keep his hands up tight. “He has to perform at his best to win this fight. This is a big step up. He’s going to have to perform at his best to beat this guy.” Despite watching a little bit of film on his opponent, Cook, who turns 29 on June 13, puts all of his faith in Guyett. All I have to do is listen to him and usually it all works out,” said Cook. “It’s worked out 14 times. The 15th time it’s going to be the same.” Cook has spent much of his career fighting at the Hershey Centre in Mis- sissauga, but has always wanted to fight closer to home. His following of support- ers is huge, with all 1500 tickets expect- ed to be sold before the fight date. Cook alone has sold 500 tickets for the upper seating area at the ACC, and will have a number of fans at tables closer to ring- side as well. The Ajax Boxing Club member hasn’t fought since September of last year, tak- ing time off to heal a bothersome wrist injury. While much is riding on this fight, including future opportunities, the Ajax resident isn’t nervous. That phase won’t kick in until he arrives in the dressing room on fight night. “I get nervous when I get into the dress- ing room because it’s a waiting game,” he said. “I’m usually the last fight and I have to wait. As soon as I’m in (the ring) I know how hard I’ve trained so I know I’ll be ready.” According to the website boxrec.com, there hasn’t been a professional boxing card in Durham Region since March 1969 in Oshawa, a span of more than 46 years. Cook’s fight will be the main event of the evening that will include five fights, featuring Ryan Young, Tim Cronin, Josh O’Reilly and Cody Crowley on the under- card. Since sur- face refinishing doesn’t require weeks of messy construction, in just 2-3 days, your kitchen and bathroomswillbebeautifulagain. “Kitchen counter tops are the new WOW factor for homeown- ers! We also refinish cupboard doors and the transformation is simply amazing! We use an HVLP spray system, NOT a paintbrush, and the topcoat lacquer is the same that kitchen man factur- ers use.” Compare refinishing to the cost of replacing or re-facing and you’ll see that you can save money.
