Durham university students highlight gender pay gap Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- It would be unthinkable for universities to hand out bachelor and “bachelorette” degrees. But local students say Ontario’s gender pay gap is evidence that the post-secondary education men and women receive trans- lates differently in the workplace. “Talking about the ‘bachelorette degree’ is an attempt to satirize the way women’s edu- cation is undervalued in our society,” says Shawn Murphy, vice-president of university affairs for the Trent-Oshawa Student Union. This month he is handing out fake “bache- lorette degrees” on campus as part of a cam- paign by the Ontario Undergraduate Stu- dent Alliance to raise awareness of the gen- der pay gap. He sums up the situation in one word -- “archaic. “It’s ridiculous to think that our univer- sities would issue his-and-hers degrees to graduates -- that would be degrading and obviously wrong,” Mr. Murphy says. “Yet research shows that your gender identi- ty has a very real impact on your ability to leverage your education in the workplace.” The gender wage gap is the difference between wages earned by men and women. It can be measured in various ways -- the most common methods are comparing full- time, full-year wages or comparing hourly wages. Statistics Canada data from 2011 shows the gender wage gap in Ontario is 26 per cent for full–time, full–year workers. That works out to women earning 74 cents for every $1 that their male counterparts earn. When part-time workers are included in the equation, the gap is 31.5 per cent. According to the latest available data, women in Ontario earned an average of $33,600 in 2011 while men earned $49,000. Female university graduates make an aver- age of $300,000 less over the course of their career compared to male graduates. “It’s incredibly important to make sure that the gender pay gap is a problem that young adults are aware of and feel empow- ered to have conversations about,” says OUSA president Jen Carter. “The gap is not shrinking the way one would expect, espe- cially given that more women than men are now graduating from university in Ontario.” According to the Ontario Pay Equity Com- mission, there are several factors that con- tribute to the gender wage gap. They include discrimination in hiring and promotion practices, fewer female workers who are unionized and women needing to leave and re-enter the workforce to care for children or other family members -- result- ing in loss of seniority and advancement. There is also the fact that jobs predomi- nantly held by women -- such as nursing, childcare and personal support work -- tend to pay less than jobs predominantly held by men. “The reason for this ... is the sense of undervaluation of the work that is primary engaged in by women,” says Jennifer Quito, a pay equity lawyer and member of the Equal Pay Coalition. “It’s because many of these are jobs that originated in the home. They’re previously domestic jobs that are now in the marketplace, but they’re still not valued appropriately by employers.” The gender pay gap has been narrowing since the Pay Equity Act was passed in 1987 -- at that time it was 36 per cent. However, advocates say this is still an issue that needs public awareness and action. In October, Premier Kathleen Wynne directed Labour Minister Kevin Flynn to develop a strategy to close the gap, saying that “women make up an integral part of our economy and society, but on average still do not earn as much as men.” Ms. Quito says solutions include ensur- ing appropriate pay for female-dominated professions, proper enforcement of the Pay Equity Act -- and a national childcare pro- gram. “When women have family responsibili- ties they’re constrained to part-time work or irregular employment. There is the instabil- ity of that work and the lack of opportunity ... those are not career track jobs,” she says. “Lack of childcare also reinforces the glass ceiling in ways that are not always so obvious.” For example, Ms. Quito says female employees who have to leave work on time to pick up kids or say no to overtime might lose out on networking opportunities or be seen as less ambitious. OUSA is encouraging students to engage on social media about their #bachelorette- degree and why they want to close the pay gap. Visit www.ousa.ca/paygap for more infor- mation. A bachelorette degree? OSHAWA -- Trent University Oshawa is working with the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance on a campaign to raise awareness of the wage gap between men and women. Shawn Murphy is a spokesman for the campaign at Trent Oshawa and will be handing out fake ‘bachelorette degrees’ with information on them. Toronto police said an additional charge of sexual assault was laid Feb. 16 against Wayne Marlon Jones, 53, of Ajax. Mr. Jones, a pastor at the United Spiritu- al Baptist Church on Midland Avenue in Scarborough, was scheduled to appear in a Toronto court Feb. 17. Mr. Jones was originally charged with sexual assault and fraud, relating to alle- gations that he exploited a woman to whom he provided counselling at the church between May 2011 and May 2013. The sessions included performing exor- cisms, police said. Toronto police said earlier this month they feared there may be more victims. The new charge was announced Tuesday. Mr. Jones is identified on the United Spiritual Baptist Church website as “Bish- op Wayne Jones”. A biography on the site said Mr. Jones was born in Trinidad and Tobago and immigrated to Canada in 1984. The site says he was ordained as a min- ister in 1987 and the following year “pas- tured” his own congregation, called the Mt. Ararat Spiritual Baptist Church. He was consecrated as a bishop in 1990, the site says. AJAX -- Wayne Marlon Jones of Ajax is charged with sexual assault and fraud. Police said a woman at a Toronto church was sexually assaulted when she was provided spiritual guidance, including exorcisms. Police suspect there may be more victims. Submitted photo Police blitz in Pickering sees 13 trucks pulled off road PICKERING -- More than 40 per cent of the commercial vehicles examined during a blitz this week in Pickering were pulled off the road over safety concerns, police said. Durham cops teamed up with Ministry of Transportation inspectors to conduct the two-day blitz Feb. 11 and 12. Of the 30 tractor trailers and dump trucks inspected, 13 were taken off the road, police said. The majority of the problems identified were related to faulty equipment, while four vehicles were found to have load security issues. Officers laid 43 Highway Traffic Act charges and seized one set of plates during the blitz. Durham Drug probe leads to trafficking charge, seizure DURHAM -- Trafficking charges have been laid against a north Durham woman accused of selling the powerful painkiller fentanyl from her home. Officers, acting on complaints from the public, conducted surveillance on a home in Beaverton, watching as a suspect left her house and got into a vehicle that pulled up nearby on Feb. 11, Durham police said. The cops watched as a drug transaction took place, police said. Police arrested a woman as she left the vehicle and found her to be in possession of cash and fentanyl strips. A search of the suspect’s home led to the seizure of fentanyl patches, cash and drug paraphernalia, police said. Lee Boles, 56, of Simcoe Street in Beaver- ton, is charged with trafficking a controlled substance. In my opinion, the decision to stand up against the ridiculous hike in tuition fees by groups like Drop Tuition and the Revo- lutionary Student Movement does every- thing but miss the mark. The last municipal election saw a turnout of a mere 29 per cent and with this level of apathy, people often find themselves a vic- tim of the system instead of being part of it. When young members of our communi- ty rally together to fight against any injus- tice, especially one that robs them of their futures for no other reason than to make a profit off their desire for a better life, they often become the catalyst for a greater tomorrow. As for the editorial stating that, “It’s not going to happen. Nor should it”; he should be reminded that the same comments were made decades ago when Tommy Douglas fought for universal health care. We simply should not be charging peo- ple to live, and in a society controlled and manipulated by the rich, one can’t live without an education any longer. David Purdy Durham health data project maps out possibilities Too politically correct for Bugs Bunny? Next to the mind-numbing, white-washed, ‘politically correct’ children’s programs of today, Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Toons are just plain brilliant ... as well as stereotypical, sexist and violent. Some folks are against their children seeing any sort of violence and though I don’t promote it, I’m not going to shelter my kids from a good old-fashioned cartoon. Bugs gets a daily screening in our living room before bed. Our giggles echo through the house as Bugs leads two hillbilly brothers in an out- rageous square dance that turns wildly slapstick. Is it violent? Yes? Is it funny? Yes. Do I love to hear my kids’ laughter? Yes. Over the years Looney Tunes have been edited, cut and censored to remove some of the ethnic ste- reotyping and violence. But thankfully what remains is a classic collection of cartoons that has stood the test of time. As a kid I remember wishing just once Sylvester would catch that smug little Tweety. Watching Bugs Bunny takes me back to a time when things were simpler and I am thankful this piece of history still remains so I can share it with my kids. Perhaps, in an effort to protect everyone and their feelings, things have gotten out of hand. Gone are the carefree days when we rode our bikes on back roads, scouring the ditches for pop bottles. Gone are the days of riding in the back of a pickup truck with our tanned legs hanging over the tailgate. Gone are the days when I lay in the back window of our old Ford, staring up at the starry night as we drove home from the cottage. In a world that has become so overly cautious as to ban tobogganing and ‘noisy’ backyard rinks, we are heading down a dangerous path where the only ‘safe’ pastime for our children will be to don a helmet, hide in the safety of their bedrooms and play video games. And so, before poor old Bugs, Yosemite Sam, Sylvester and Elmer Fudd are altered any fur- ther to ‘protect’ innocent young minds, my family and I will enjoy some good old-fashioned humour before it’s gone. -- Megan Denby lives in Port Perry and is the award-winning author of ‘A Thistle in the Mist’ Megan Denby Guest column Cartoon culture Logic says we have to know where we are before we can determine where we want to go. A comprehensive picture of health in Durham Region communities is painted with the Region’s Health Neighbourhoods project, a pool of online data which exam- ines health status in 50 neighbourhoods across Durham, showing how health varies by where residents live. It includes 62 indicators in the areas of demographics, early child development and health. Indicators include population, educa- tion, births, breastfeeding, emotional matu- rity and social competence among children, and smoking, physical activity and obesity rates. Far from being a static collection of data, the project provides key information that could prove useful in a variety of ways, from business planning to preparing fund- ing applications, and identifying gaps in social services. The caveat will be that rel- evant agencies tap into the data and make it part of their toolkits in mapping out future plans. And so far, the project has been well received. Various community organizations with diverse mandates see value in the kind of data contained in the Health Neighbour- hoods project. Rose of Durham, which provides programs and support to young parents, views the data as a way to identify gaps in services and as being helpful in future funding requests. The Whitby library sees it as fitting into its mandate to facilitate community connec- tions, and suggests students, workplaces and people looking to move to certain areas now have a wealth of information at their finger- tips. Business leaders at the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade say they can use the data to promote Durham as a good place to do busi- ness, and identify which neighbourhoods certain businesses can find a need to fulfill. In short, the more we know about what’s going on in Durham -- or not going on -- the better equipped we are to help steer our communities in the right direction, and pro- vide services, programs, resources and fund- ing where they’re most needed to improve quality of life for all residents. Although the Durham health department has always had the information that’s dis- played in Health Neighbourhoods, having the data mapped out the way it is will help its own staff better understand patterns of health and disease, and help focus health promotion programs more effectively. Good health is the foundation of our col- lective well-being as a community. To begin with a clear picture of where we are today, and to share that wealth of information openly with all, is a catalyst to create the best future possible. For more information on the project, visit durham.ca/neighbourhoods or call 905-666- 6241 or 1-800-841-2729 Four-legged fiends make life better The problem with dogs is that the more you walk them the more they want to be walked. Like idiots, Kathryn and I made the inex- cusable mistake of exercising our animals regularly and vigorously. They have become used to daily snow- shoeing, bike riding and long walks with us through every season. Frankly, I don’t know what we were think- ing. The net result of all of this training, of course, is that if, for some reason, we miss a day, the two of them become like four- legged junkies going through withdrawal. Every time I get up from my desk, even just to go to the bathroom, the dogs rush to the front door thinking, ‘Surely this must be it! Walk time! God bless him, he didn’t forget!’ If I put my coat or boots on to take the recycling out they are there, waiting eagerly, with those damnably adoring eyes. “Going out? Awesome! Where we going?” If I need to put a sweater on because the house has become a little chilly, both dogs doggedly follow me up the stairs and into my walk-in closet, because they know, again, from years of daily routine, this is where I keep my snow pants and fleece clothing. Items that, when donned, always lead to doggie fun. And even if I do not move at all, if I sit at my keyboard, silently working for hours, they will cleverly position themselves on a couch or loveseat nearby where they feign sleep, heaving hugely dramatic sighs of bore- dom and throwing in strategically timed yawns and stretches until I simply cannot take it any longer. They are fiends. But clearly they must know something that we don’t, or more probably, that we continu- ally forget, because every time we let them get us outdoors or into that forest or onto that trail life gets better. Late this past Sunday afternoon, after a particularly hectic Saturday and most of Sunday in which dog-walking was unfortu- nately put on the back-burner, we realized we needed to get them out. But it was late. The winter light was fading, we hadn’t eaten yet…yadda-yadda-yadda. The dogs didn’t care. They just wanted to go. They were tuned into what matters. Lucky for us, this time we listened. We drove to a nearby forest, strapped on some snowshoes and, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the world was slowly cloaked in the crystalline blue of winter twi- light, we followed our happy, bouncing dogs into a snow-covered, magical world. Kathryn remarked that it was as though we had just stepped out of the Wardrobe and into Narnia. It was breathtaking. And transforma- tive. Grinning like idiots, we strode silently through that place; stress, worry and fixa- tion falling from us like the flakes drifting down from the darkening sky. The dogs leapt ahead, the younger of the two dancing back to us through chest deep snow, happily yipping his ‘I told you guys! I told you guys! Isn’t this cool?’ It was cool. It was probably one of the coolest moments of our lives. One that we would have missed, no question, were it not for the loving insistence and yes, wisdom of our dogs. -- Durham resident Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column. 10 Spring projects to plan now Let’s Talk Weigh in on topics of the day www.facebook.com/ newsdurham Poll HEALTH CARE CONTROVERSY: An Oshawa woman who was turned away from a walk-in clinic has complained -- though the clinic had patient rules posted -- and it all led to a spirited discussion on Facebook last week. A Tim Hortons gift card if you are the Featured Letter authorFeatured Letter Durham teens are under too much pressure To the editor: As society is drastically changing, adoles- cents are being put under more pressure than ever before. It has come to my attention, being a 17 year old, that many adults seem to believe that stress is the last thing on a teen’s mind when, in fact, for most adolescents, it is the exact opposite. With exam time and university accep- tances fast approaching, the need to be so-called “perfect” is constantly our main focus. Due to pressures from parents, teach- ers, peers and even the media, some might be feeling as if our best is just not good enough. Not to mention their added desire that we maintain athletics, social status, hob- bies, and grades all at once -- still finding time for proper rest and diet. If attention is not brought to this topic, the heath risks that stress imposes on ado- lescents will increase dramatically. Anxiety, depression and even obesity will continue to rise, causing the health of teens to plummet. All adolescents yearn for encouragement and support. At arguably the most important stage of their life, teens require a society where the definition of perfect is exactly who they are, not what someone else wants them to be. Tara Denobrega Whitby Blair Brophy: There are at least 10 other clinics she could go to in Oshawa. My husband goes to North Oshawa and I cannot, it’s really her own fault. It’s clearly posted. Jenn Harper: If it says walk-in clinic then people should be able to walk in and be seen. Change the name if you’re not a “walk-in” and make it “clinic”. We ALL know to look for the words “walk-in”. Jo-Anne Cawker: So what the heck would happen if, say, you went there and happened to collapse in the middle of that clinic? Are they going toss you over in the corner until you can come to, to make your way to some other clin- ic? That is not right at all. Julie Godwin-Kobrynovich: Walk-in clinics are there for people to access if their doctor isn’t avail-able, after hours or don’t have a family GP. If all clinics did this, where would one go who didn’t have a doc- tor?! It should be changed to “clinic” hours as someone mentioned above. Eva-Lynn Vanderstam: This is dumb ... I worked in a private clinic and they have the right to turn away whoever, whenever. End of story. If you’re THAT sick.. Go to the hospital. Camilla Forsberg: There is a dif- ference between a doctor’s office running an after hours urgent care for patients of their own clinic and a public walk-in clinic. Clearly this is not a public walk-in clinic. 1. Build a deck. 2. Install an enclosed porch. 3. Sweep out or replace your gutters. 4. Install skylights. 5. This was one statistic that stood out to her while looking through the health department’s new Health Neighbour- hoods project, which examines health status in 50 neighbourhoods across Dur- ham and provides a picture of how health varies by where residents live. It includes 62 indicators in the areas of demograph- ics, early child development and health. Indicators include population, education, births, breastfeeding, emotional maturity and social competence among children, and smoking, physical activity and obesity rates. “This is the first time that such compre- hensive health information has been avail- able in Durham Region at the neighbour- hood level,” said Ms. Pietrusiak. “Although the information will be most useful to health and social service organizations, anyone can access the reports, maps and tables.” People can view each indicator to see how it varies across neigh- bourhoods and compares to Durham Region. They can also look at each neigh- bourhood to see all 62 indicators profiled. The site provides access to an overview report, feature reports, a map viewer and indicator summaries, along with neigh- bourhood profiles for each neighbour- hood, the eight area municipalities and Durham Region as a whole. Anna Aitchison, Rose of Durham clinical supervisor, says the information helps the organization see holes and gaps through- out Durham and areas that need concen- tration. “It makes it easier to put together, it makes it more concrete for us,” she said. For example, the project shows that more babies are getting their well visits in Oshawa than they are in Pickering. “I personally was surprised at that one,” she said. Rose of Durham also plans to use some of the information when proposing fund- ing requests. The Whitby Pub- lic Library was so impressed with the project that it has post- ed the link on its web- site. “One of our strate- gic directions over the next few years is being a catalyst for commu- nity connections,” said Rhonda Jessup, the library’s public servic- es manager. She feels students, workplaces and even people looking to move to certain areas now have a wealth of information at their fingertips. “It’s such an amazing piece of research on local issues so we wanted to help get the word out,” said Ms. Jessup. Kathy McKay, executive director of the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade, also finds the project a useful tool. “The more we know about what we have the more we can promote it and make us a welcoming com- munity for busi- nesses,” she said. She said people looking to locate, relocate or pro- mote their busi- ness would bene- fit from the data. “That’s what businesses are doing. They’re looking for a need,” she said. For example, if someone is look- ing to open up a daycare, they can use the tool to find where younger families are liv- ing. Some of the project’s findings include: the highest concentration of pregnant teenage girls is in downtown Oshawa; income has a big impact on health; neigh- bourhoods with the lowest incomes tend to have poorer health; and, the neighbour- hoods in the downtown areas of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa tend to have lower incomes, more seniors and fewer young people. Ms. Pietrusiak said in general Durham residents enjoy good health, “however, it’s clear that health varies by where you live.” Although the health department has always had the information that’s dis- played in Health Neighbourhoods, having the data mapped out the way it is will help even its own staff to better understand pat- terns of health and disease, and to help focus health promotion programs more effectively. “I think just by getting some of this infor- mation out there, there’s going to be some projects that happen as people begin to work with the info in ways maybe we haven’t even thought of,” Ms. Pietrusiak said. The health department plans to update the information as it comes in and to include more indicators in the future. For more information on the project, visit durham.ca/neighbourhoods or call 905-666-6241 or 1-800-841-2729. (NC) Many of us envision the gutsy move to flip a house for quick financial gains – and some people are quite successful at doing so, say advisors in this field. For those with the time, energy and technical skills, buying a property to fix up and sell later at a higher price or to rent out for a period of time, can be a worthwhile investment. But do your research. “Challenges can quickly mount for the novice who chooses to invest in real estate,” says Lincoln Thompson, broker-owner with Royal LePage Gardiner Realty in Fredericton, New Brunswick. “But if you take the time to choose the right home and rely on the right people for expertise, your investment can pay dividends.” Thompson offers three recommendations for success: 1. Take note of the taxes. As the saying goes, the only things certain in life are death and taxes. Depending upon the municipal, provincial and federal taxation requirements for your area, sales tax and land transfer tax will apply at differing levels across the country. You could even be taxed based on the level of renovations if a lot of work has been done. Also, consider the personal or business taxation implications from the sale of the property or on rental income that is generated. An accountant and lawyer are two people you’ll want to bring in early before you venture into this realm. If you find the right home in the right location, taxes may not be a deal breaker, but be aware that paying them will cut into your profits. 2. Consider a joint venture, but choose your partners wisely. Each party should bring to the relationship what others within the deal cannot. For example, if you have trade or technical expertise but are lacking funds or financial expertise, you’ll want to concentrate on finding investment partners who bring these skills to the relationship. Don’t partner with people who have the same strengths and weaknesses as you. If you are lacking expertise in any area, including real estate, hire a real estate agent with experience in real estate investment within the location you are considering. An experienced agent will also aid in bringing together the right deal makers. 3. Don’t buy a property without answering these basic questions: Can I buy it below retail market value? Can I do small renovations to increase the value? Is there an increase in demand for the area? Are there sales over list price in the area? What is the nature of the surrounding properties? What amenities and services are within walking distance? Do I need to purchase appliances? Can this property be rented? If so, what are the going rental rates for similar properties in the area? Real estate investment is a great way to supplement your income if you do your homework and set yourself up for success with the right expertise. Heading down the aisle in a church, a garden or in a tropical setting far from home? Bridal Desires has the latest styles, together with the personalized service you need, to nd the perfect t! Be sure to see the latest bridal fashion trends from top designers at the 2015 Spring Wedding Show. Discover for yourself why so many brides nd the perfect dress at Bridal Desires. For the Bride “Brides want glamour on their special day so they’re wearing gorgeous lace, lace and more lace this season,” explains Joanna Carter, owner of Bridal Desires. “Vintage- inspired styles and sweetheart necklines are making a splash and designers are introducing more fashion details from the past with appliques on the gown, beaded sashes, jewellery and more! Silhouettes range from a-line ball gowns, Cinderella-style ball gowns, mermaid and t-n- are to the latest trend -- the sheath-style gown for a simple silhouette!” Full length gowns with sweetheart necklines, one shoulder, bateau necklines as well as plunging backs for drama all receive raves from brides. Bateau and illusion necklines usually combine a sweetheart neckline beneath the sheer or semi sheer layer to give both a demure and sexy feel all at the same time. Simple clean styles with accessories that make a bold statement, such as a large beaded belt, make the gown pop. Brides are adding a layer of detail with sashes adorned with jewels and owers and gro-grain sashes to add texture. Brides love to mix textures for added dimension. “We are seeing a lot of lace paired with gro-grain sashes and lots of layers of elegant lace,” explains Joanna. “Sashes and belts adorned with beads and jewels or oral accents add drama to a sleek bridal style.” Lightweight, airy tulle fabrics create a dreamy and wispy e ect. Be sure to see the latest styles in everything from a bit of sparkle just on the bodice to full sparkle throughout the gown at Bridal Desires! For the bridesmaids Full-length gowns are more popular than ever for bridesmaids. For shorter cuts, just above the knee is the trend. Soft owing chi ons are the number one choice of fabric and full lace or mixing fabrics such as chi on and lace adds interest and dimension. People are enjoying more variety in necklines that are becoming more and more available. “We are seeing cap straps, bateau and illusion necklines in many wedding party styles,” Joanna says. “Dresses that are tted through the bodice to the natural waist then ow out are also very popular. You will also see a lot of draping and rauching through the bodice of the gowns.” Petal and blush-tone pinks, soft blues and greys create a vintage palette to blend with a heritage-style wedding. Soft corals, orchids, lavenders and black are also very popular. For destination weddings, vibrant colours such as fuchsias, rich corals, watermelons and watery turquoise are desired for their tropical energy. Don’t miss the fashion shows at noon and 3pm at the Ajax Wedding Show where you’ll nd all the latest styles and colours brought to you by Bridal Desires. Pre-planning is the key to a great event Steve meets each bride personally to ensure an exceptional personal experience. He stakes his reputation on delivering the best DJ for each event – every time! And, if you’re wondering if you can be sure which DJ will show up, no need to worry. You can always meet your DJ before the big day – with the added bonus that in case of a rare emergency, Steve will personally nd a replacement from his team of 8 party hosts. Smaller services can’t guarantee that kind of reliability. When you meet with Steve, you’ll discuss your musical tastes, the songs you have chosen for the formal dances and the diversity of your guests. Then he will assign one of their professional DJs that best suits your wedding needs. A 50 year old DJ will not show up for a crowd of 22 year olds! Clients rave about DJ Concepts “Family and friends still talk about the fun they had at our wedding with all the music and laughter. We ADVERTISING FEATURE Don’t take chances with your wedding reception. When deciding on a DJ there are so many factors to consider. “Experience is the number one thing to look for!” explains Steve Ernst, owner of DJ Concepts, formerly known as Sight and Sound, Durham’s favourite DJ service! “Knowing how to read a crowd so you can do the best job possible takes lots of experience. You should also ask to see a DJ’s music lists and online planning forms and make sure it’s their full-time career, not just a hobby.” Why is a DJ’s experience so important? Because your DJ is more than just playing music, he is your party host. Being able to create enjoyable memories for every guest is an art form that takes years of experience to perfect. Don’t trust your wedding reception to just anyone. Steve and his team of professional emcees and DJs are not your typical DJs. They know how to create the style of party you want – so you, and all of your guests, can have a great time celebrating your special day. Helpful things to know before hiring a DJ: Does this DJ use professional equipment? Does he or she have back-up equipment and sta available in the event of a problem or failure at the last minute? Does this DJ know proper etiquette and procedure for your type of wedding? Does he or she take music requests from your guests? Can he or she act as a Master of Ceremonies during the party? Is this DJ able to provide references? Does he or she dress appropriately for the occasion? Does this DJ drink alcohol or smoke while on the job? How to choose the perfect DJ – Not your typical DJ! Speciality training courses, like the one Durham College firefighting student Adam Brunt was taking when he died on Feb. 8, are a popular choice for students who want to beef up their resume. “It’s a very competitive field right now, it’s very popular,” says Oshawa Fire Chief Steve Meringer. “They’re over subscribed at the college level, it’s hard to even get in. If you want to be successful in the recruitment process, you have to build your resume according- ly.” Chief Meringer declined to comment on the specific training Mr. Brunt was taking, but says there are many private firms that teach courses such as rope rescue, con- fined space rescue and water and ice res- cue. Those techniques are not part of the basic firefighting skills taught in college programs such as the Durham College pre- service firefighter program Mr. Brunt was enrolled in. The Oshawa chief says the very nature of the job means the training also has an ele- ment of danger. For example, at this time of year, Oshawa Fire Services often conducts its own train- ing out on the lake. “We start training in a pool ... but then we move on to ice. You have to replicate that environment,” he explains, noting that they are “very stringent” about safety. Brent Pearce, Mr. Brunt’s uncle and a Clarington firefighter for 16 years, says the 30-year-old Bowmanville man was train- ing with a Newmarket-based firm called Herschel Rescue. Terry Harrison, who identifies himself online as the main instructor and owner of the firm, could not be reached for com- ment. This is not the first time a student has died while training with Mr. Harrison. In 2010, a 51-year-old volunteer firefight- er named Gary Kendall was trapped under ice for several minutes during a similar training exercise on the St. Clair River near Sarnia. Mr. Harrison was acquitted in 2012 on a charge under the Occupational Health and Safety Act of failing to take reasonable pre- cautions to protect a worker. Richard Boyes, executive director of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, says companies that provide specialized fire- fighter training are not regulated. He stressed consumers need to do their “due diligence” when choosing a firm, including ensuring that trainers are quali- fied. While training in a frigid river or with a real fire involves a degree of danger, Mr. Boyes says it is crucial for firefighters to experience realistic conditions so they will be prepared in an emergency. “There ultimately comes a point where you have to be as close to real life as pos- sible,” he says. ne w s d u r h a m ne w s d u r h a m ne w s d u r h a m Durham firefighters say ‘real life’ training essential CANADATHE NEW APPRENTICELOAN $4,000 interest-free to help you complete your apprenticeship In addition to Apprenticeship Grants and tax credits, the new Canada Apprentice Loan offers up to $4,000 interest-free per period of Red Seal technical training to help you complete your apprenticeship. He chose the Uxbridge Bruins to help him achieve that. Proving that you can go back, the Pickering resident is back with the Jr. C hockey club, hoping that in his final year of junior, a long and productive playoff run lies ahead. “This is the place to do it,” said the 20 year old of joining the Bruins. “My first year here we lost to Lakefield in the Cou- gar Cup when we had the team to go all the way. This is our year for sure.” Spataro, a defenceman who played most of his minor hockey with the Pickering Panthers and one season with the Ajax-Pickering Raiders, played for the Uxbridge Bruins in the 2012-13 season, contributing 12 points on a goal and 11 assists in 37 games. He took the next step and elevated his game in 2013-14, join- ing the Lindsay Muskies of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. But when the Muskies struggled this season and were out of the playoff race, Spataro asked to be moved at the Jan. 10 trade deadline. After 86 games over a year and a half with Lindsay, he is back in Jr. C. and couldn’t be happier. “Before I came down, I told the (GM Dan West, a former Bruins coach) if I can’t be traded, I’d love to go back down. On a Friday night before our game, he told me and I was happy. “I can’t say anything bad about the organization. They did everything for me. But, I wanted to win. This is my best place.” Having a player of Spataro’s quality join the team for the stretch drive and play- offs made him a welcomed addition. “Anybody you can bring on board that’s going to play big minutes, play against top lines every night. You can’t be upset with what he brings to the lineup. He brings a captain’s mentality,” said head coach Geoff Hodgkinson. The two go way back, as Hodgkinson coached Spataro with the Triple-A Raid- ers for a season. The familiarity helped. “I’m big on relationship building,” said Hodgkinson. “As a coach my philosophy is about getting to know those guys. There are 23 personalities and you have to find out what makes each one tick. Guys like Spataro know when to turn it on. He’s a good person. Down to earth, knows what he wants to do with life. That’s all you can ask.” Walking into the dressing room as a 20-year-old veteran had a different feel to it then the first time when he was a young rookie. But paired with captain Carter Vahey, Spataro has given the Bruins a solid shut-down pair on defence. “It felt like I never left. They welcomed me back,” said Spataro. “A lot of guys from my first year are still here. Even the new guys brought me in like I was family. “From a maturity standpoint, definite- ly on the ice with my patience with the puck is different. In the room I used to be that kid that looked up to the 20 year olds. Now the younger guys kind of look up to me. It’s kind of cool how the transi- tion works like that.” Because he was acquired at the trade deadline, Spataro isn’t eligible to return as an overeager next season with the Bruins. The Dunbarton graduate, who is taking part-time courses in business commerce at UOIT, is hoping to join the Ridgebacks hockey team next sea- son when he enrols at the university full- time. After finishing the season with 11 wins in their final 12 games to clinch first place, the Bruins earned some time off after earning a first-round playoff bye. They will play the winner of a best-of-five series between fourth-place Port Perry and fifth-place Little Britain in a best- of-seven semifinal. The other semi will pit second place Lakefield against third- place Clarington. The Bruins finished the season 30-9-3, besting second-place Lakefield by four points. BOWMANVILLE -- Michael Spataro is back with the Uxbridge Bruins after spending close to two seasons with the Lindsay Muskies. The veteran defenceman wants to close out his junior career with a Jr. C championship. Jason Liebregts / Metroland Hockey Pair of lopsided losses eliminates Pickering Panthers from playoff race Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- In their final two games of the season, the Pickering Panthers will be hop- ing to avoid a trend that has developed in the past two games. Out of the playoff race and now playing out the string in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, the Panthers have been on the wrong end of a couple of lopsided scores to a pair of the top teams in the North-East Conference. In Kingston on Thursday, Feb. 12, and home to Trenton on Sunday, Feb. 15, the Panthers went down by identical 9-1 scores, running their current losing streak to four games. In Kingston, the Panthers dressed just 12 skaters, with a couple of injuries and university exams contributing to the short bench. Against Trenton, the visitors were up 5-0 by the end of the first period , 6-1 after two and cruised from there. “It’s not like we were lackadaisical, or tired. We were skating well, we had some good chances. We’re playing a pretty good hockey team there,” said head coach Paul Coffey following Sunday’s loss to Trenton. “Second period we tied them one all. Wheth- er they let up, that’s not a concern of mine. I thought we had a good second period. “The third period is what it is. I think we competed hard until the end. What are you going to do?” Cam Palmer had a third-period marker for the Panthers in the game against Kings- ton, down 8-0 at the time. Captain Mark Tenuta closed out the second period scoring on home ice with a goal against Trenton with the Panthers trailing 6-0. Prior to the four-game losing streak, the Panthers were locked in a battle for the sev- enth or eighth playoff spot in the conference with Newmarket and Wellington, but have fallen out of the race and are mathemati- cally eliminated. The Panthers are five points behind Wellington and seven back of New- market with just two games to play. With a record of 19-25-1-7, the Panthers will host Milton on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m., then head into Toronto to face the Jr. Canadiens in the final game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 21. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Fe b r u a r y 1 8 , 2 0 1 5 29 AP HEALTHCAREHEALTHCARE Improve your life and the lives of others.Improve your life and the lives of others. • Pharmacy Assistant • Personal Support Worker • Community Services Worker • Medical Office Assistant • Addiction Worker • Physiotherapy Assistant / Occupational Therapy Assistant • Medical Transcriptionist • Pharmacy Assistant • Personal Support Worker • Community Services Worker • Medical Office Assistant • Addiction Worker • Physiotherapy Assistant / Occupational Therapy Assistant • Medical Transcriptionist Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify.Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify.
