Dozens of LEGO robots whirred and whizzed as teams of students controlled them from the sidelines during the annual FIRST LEGO League Ontario East Provincial Championships on Jan. 17. About 400 students ages nine to 14 were on hand to compete, after qualifying in regional tournaments. They included the “Wagon Wheels” team from St. Bernadette Catholic School in Ajax, the only team from Durham to advance to the championships this year. Aidan Hartley, Emily Herron, William Cole, Alexander Correia and Meghan Hodgson -- who are in Grades 6, 7 and 8 -- have been working together during lunch hour and after school for months, to design, build and program an autonomous robot using LEGO Mindstorms software. The team, coached by Catherine Grant, Linda Rehill and Diane Van Hoof, created a robot that features a claw for picking up items, three wheels for sturdy balance and special sensors for optimum maneuverabil- ity. William said working on the robot is fun “because it has science and math all togeth- er.” “I like the way we use computer pro- grams to program the robot,” added Emily. The FIRST LEGO League program sees teams compete in three areas: robot games where their high-tech creations complete “missions” such as throwing a ball through a net or opening a door; a research project that requires them to present an innovative solu- tion to a problem; and a teamwork challenge. “It’s a nice marriage, you’ve got the research presentation which requires a lot of literacy and creativity...and on the other side is the science and technology,” says David Ellis, director of FLL Ontario. He says the teamwork challenge also encourages character education. “Coaches and parents often remark on how much their children have changed from being part of the organization,” he notes. And of course, it’s fun. There was plenty of laughter, hugs and high fives on Saturday as teams reunited with old friends and met new ones. Spectators gasped and pointed as the robots performed their tasks, their student creators watching each move intently. “It’s just amazing that these were made by elementary school kids,” says Carol Baker, who came to watch her grandson’s team from Toronto compete. Durham College president Don Lovisa says hosting the event on campus is “great fun” and a perfect opportunity to showcase what the local college and university have to offer. “This brings a whole bunch of smart, fun, engaged students to the campus, it’s a great audience to have. They get to learn a little bit about us and hopefully they get excited about maybe coming to school here.” The two highest scoring teams from the two Ontario championship events will go on to compete at the FLL World Festival in St. Louis, MO this spring. The revisions, to be adopted Feb. 1, are in line with pending provincial legislation and reflect concerns that people applying for jobs or volunteer positions could be adversely affected by the dissemination of information about past involvement with police, members of Dur- ham’s police services board heard Monday, Jan. 12. But police will still have discretion over whether or not to disclose information about an applicant being investi- gated for an offence involving a vulnerable person, even if no conviction resulted, Durham police records man- ager Sheri Crago said. “That will go to a supervisor for review,” Ms. Crago said. If it is found disclosure of the records are in the inter- est of public safety, the information will be included in background check results, she said. The new protocol was developed by the Law Enforce- ment and Records Managers’ Network, which consult- ed with agencies including the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, the John Howard Society and the Canadian Mental Health Association. Concerns have been raised about job applicants and prospective volunteers being adversely affected by the release of information about past involvement with police that did not result in charg- es or convictions. The new guidelines aim to strike a balance between providing information about individuals applying to work with vulnerable people and the rights of those applicants to privacy and the presumption of innocence, board members were told. Police may still decide to release non-conviction information if it is deemed appropriate to ensure the safety of vulnerable per- sons, Ms. Crago said. Release of such information would be the exception rather than the norm, board members heard. Police Chief Paul Martin reminded board members that crim- inal background checks reveal only information compiled by police, and is not a guarantee of the quality of an applicant’s character. “For us to give an agency an assurance this person is squeaky clean ... I think that’s a bit of a stretch,” the chief said. Durham police processed 40,000 criminal background checks in 2014, Ms. Crago said. The target timeline for completion is 10 days, but applicants with no criminal records can often be processed more quickly, she said. Page 6 - Today’s editorial It’s Coming... 1/2 PRICE DAY • SAT. The incident occurred on Thursday, Jan. 15 at about 2:30 p.m., when a suspect went to the Bank of Montreal branch on Kingston Road and tried to cash a cheque for more than $900. Bank staff confirmed the cheque was a forgery and called police, Durham Regional Police report. The suspect was still in the waiting room when the first officer arrived, but bolted out a rear emergency exit when he spotted the officer. The officer chased the suspect across Kingston Road and through the parking lot of a car dealership before the suspect went into a wooded marsh area. Additional officers arrived and found the suspect hiding on a frozen creek, where he was arrested without inci- dent. Joshuah Anang, 23 of Torresdale Avenue in Toron- to, has been charged with fraud under $5,000, uttering a forged document and possession of the proceeds of crime. Pickering.ca/civicawards. The skate police are onto me I think I am in imminent danger of hav- ing my Canadian citizenship revoked. I’m not sure how this has happened, and I cer- tainly didn’t do it intentionally, but I’ve let a particularly important item slip from my life that is now threatening the veracity of my claim to be a native of this country. If I don’t act soon I am certain I’ll be getting a visit from government officials bearing extradition orders. The problem, unfortunately, is that not only has it been years since I’ve skated outdoors but I no longer even own a pair of skates. How do I explain that one when those thugs from Parliament Hill come to my door? Yes, I have been outdoors a great deal. I snowshoe and snowboard and I even ride my bike all winter long but…gulp…no, I don’t own a pair of skates. Thank God I still have a hockey stick. It hasn’t ever been used, mind you, but that’s only because it has Darryl Sittler’s autograph on it. That might buy me a little leniency. But these people are tough. When it comes to skates they don’t mess around. You can show them pictures of you tobogganing, cross- country skiing and eating beaver tails until the cows come home but it won’t cut any ice with them. Absence of skates is about as serious as it gets. It’s close to treason in this coun- try. Legally it’s called a 10-59 and it’s only slightly less egregious than a 10-60, ‘Fail- ure to remain polite and deferential’. I’ve seen people hauled out of their homes and sent straight to Los Angeles for that one. And trust me, the fact that I live only blocks from a pristine, frozen lake isn’t going to help my case one iota. I drove by there yes- terday and saw a whole gaggle of kids out gliding around and having the time of their lives. I parked the car and stared wistfully at them, happy childhood memories of fro- zen fingers and rosy cheeks rising up with- in me like steam from a mug of hot choco- late. And then I saw them. Two guys in suits and sunglasses tailing me in a black Crown Vic, hockey bags in the back seat. Feds. Skate police. I managed to shake them by driving through a road hockey game before the kids called ‘Car!’, but they’ll be back. I’m on thin ice and I know it. The way I see it, I’ve only got a couple of options here. I could try and buy these guys off. I’ve got a signed Jean Beliveau and a cell-o-wrapped, mint Stan Makita I could part with if push came to shove. It’d kill me but at least I could maybe stay in the coun- try for a while. Who’s kidding who though? Even if I managed to bribe these clowns, they’d only send more. And you can bet nothing short of box seats to a game seven Leafs Cup final would shake those guys. No, ultimately, if I want to hang onto my citizenship and all of the benefits inherent therein, if I want to stay living here in the finest, most beautiful country in the world, if I still want to truly call myself a Canadi- an, I’m going to have to lace ‘em up again. That’s a fact that there’s just no skating away from. -- Durham resident Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column. 10 Books adapted to films Let’s Talk Weigh in on topics of the day www.facebook.com/ newsdurham Poll FOOD TRUCK FRENZY: The success of last year’s Food Truck Frenzy event in Whitby has paved the way for another gastronomic go-around this year, with news that a bigger and better event is planned for 2015. Were the lines long...of course they were. Could they use some extra planning in how to manage those lines and parking? Of course. But last year was the first year and these sorts of things take some time to work out the bugs. I stood in line for an hour for a fantastic piece of gourmet corn on the cob, stood for a long time after for some ribs and a pulled pork sandwich and had a fantastic time. Last year I saw people being ticketed for parking along the street behind the event. A little unfair to plan an event to attract crowds and then have the Town use it as a money-maker in the form of parking tickets. Doug Archell: Maybe but probably not after last year. We went around dinner (the time when people actu- ally eat) and it was insanely busy, made worse because a bunch of the trucks were closed or out of stock, and we just ended up leav- ing after spending forever trying to score parking. Paul Van Alstyne: Not likely. Went last year. Took forever to find parking and when we finally got in, at least half the vendors were sold out. I mean literally no food left to serve. Krista Taylor: We wanted to go, but with a little one in tow, we didn’t because we heard the lineups were soooooo long... Joanne Carnovale I would like to go, but last year the lines were over an hour long, most of the trucks ran out of food, and I really didn’t think there were many options. I hope this year turns out bet- ter knowing now it will draw a big crowd. More Sample sizes would be good to, I was hoping to try a little of eveything, but all samples were gone... 10. To the editor: Re: ‘Whitby first community to lose door- to-door mail delivery’, news, durhamregion. com, Jan. 8, 2015. Has Canada Post considered likely ramifi- cations other than their bottom line: cost? For instance, since they are targeting “older residential areas of Whitby” where every square inch of space is accounted for, where exactly will they place the communal mail boxes? A hundred or so cars stopping every day by the side of the road to access mail seems to present a real safety hazard. It is not necessary to outline the many safety hazards that one can envision with this system. One really wonders if Canada Post’s minions even considered safety, or is that moot? Do they just, as seems typical for bureaucrats, opt for the short-term cost solution without considering possible out- comes? Apparently apartments and condos will not be affected and will in fact have special areas for parcel delivery as well. Homeown- ers, on the other hand, will need to schlep on down to the communal mail box to get a notice telling them that it’s necessary to schlep on further to the post office branch to pick up parcels. Well, that plan certainly seems biased toward a certain type of development for Whitby. In new residential developments space can be allocated via bylaws for a safe off- road communal mail delivery and pickup area. Not so easy to do in older areas where a multitude of safety problems will be cre- ated. Not only will these communal mailbox centres be unsafe, unsightly and dangerous but they will attract vandalism. Do these flawed bureaucrats ever look beyond their own inflated salaries? Chances are, not only have mortgage rates changed, but so too have your circumstances since your last term. “Too many Canadians focus solely on the mortgage rate when the real secret to saving money at renewal time is to consider term, amortization, and payment frequency,” says Erica Nielsen, vice-president of home equity financing at RBC Royal Bank. “Don’t automatically renew or you may be missing out on ways to save on your overall mortgage costs. Review your financial goals as you choose your next mortgage.” Homeowners often zero in on the interest rate of their mortgage as the top consideration when mortgage shopping, Nielsen points out. While interest rates have been at near or record lows for some time, be mindful that a future rate change may impact the budget for your home and lifestyle. Your comfort level with fluctuating interest rates may help you decide whether to renew your mortgage at a fixed or variable rate. From RBC, here are three ways to help you save on interest rate costs and become mortgage-free faster: 1. Up your frequency: Most people think of a mortgage payment as a monthly expense. Consider switching it to a bi-weekly accelerated payment schedule. By making a mortgage payment every other week, you’ll end up making one extra monthly payment every year. 2. Flexible payment options: Some mortgages offer a low rate, but contain lots of restrictive fine print. Secure a mortgage that offers both a great rate and flexibility, with features such as double-up payments, deferral options, and prepayment privileges. 3. Talk to a mortgage professional: Everyone’s mortgage needs are unique. A mortgage specialist can provide expert advice and help you with customized payment strategies, rate inquiries, moving your mortgage, or setting up the appropriate amortization period and term to help you achieve your personal financial goals. The girls, aged 14 and 16, were found work- ing as prostitutes at a Whitby hotel in Octo- ber of 2014, Durham police said. Cops say the girls were under the control of a man who took sexually suggestive pictures of them and posted them online, advertising them as escorts. A suspect turned himself in at a police sta- tion Jan. 15. Taylor Laughlin, also known as “Leo”, a 23-year-old resident of Bayfield Street in Pickering, is charged with several offences including living on the avails of prostitution of a person under 18, possession of child por- nography, luring a child and uttering threats. He was held for a bail hearing. Durham police have taken an aggressive approach to human trafficking, focusing on helping young women escape forced pros- titution. Police have established a dedicated human trafficking hotline -- 1-888-579-1520, extension 4888. newsdurhamnewsdurhamnewsdurham It’s Coming... 1/2 PRICE DAY • SAT. The Beer Store, a private retailer run by three major foreign-based breweries, made the announcement on Jan. 7, taking micro- brewers across the province by surprise. “It really came out of left field for all of us,” said Ian Mills, co-owner of 5 Paddles Brew- ing Company in Whitby. “We’re a small brewery now but we’re working toward get- ting into the Beer Store and the LCBO, and to have an avenue open up like that, it was just kind of weird; we didn’t expect it.” Established in 1927, the Beer Store was originally owned by a consortium of Ontar- io-based brewers but is currently owned by Labatt of Belgium, Molson Coors, controlled from the United States, and Sleeman, owned by Sapporo in Japan. It operates 448 retail stores across Ontario, including about 20 locations in Durham. Under the changes, Ontario brewers that sell more than five million litres a year would pay $1,000, and smaller brewers $100, to become owners and get one class E or class F share. They are also being offered a total of three seats on the 15-member board of directors of the Beer Store. Molson and Labatt would each have five seats on the board and Sleeman two seats. In a statement, the Beer Store’s owners said opening ownership makes sense for Ontario brewers and consumers because it helps the retail network continue to offer a low-cost advantage and continues to allow brewers to independently set the lowest average beer prices in Canada. “We heard from Ontario brewers that they wanted to participate in the management of the Beer Store and contribute to its future success,” said Stewart Glendinning, CEO of Molson Coors Canada. “That’s why we’re opening up the system and making it even more transparent.” But according to Ontario Craft Brewers, an association of about 50 small brewers, the changes do not address the main issue of improving access for consumers. “Our goal continues to be fundamental change to Ontario’s beer distribution chan- nels that will result in a doubling or tripling of the jobs currently created by the craft brewers as well as the ability to reach our full share of market potential,” said Cam Heaps, chairman of Ontario Craft Brewers. “We were not consulted on any of this and as such, we just do not have enough infor- mation to comment right now.” The move comes on the heels of the Ontario government’s threats to disman- tle the beer monopoly unless more money pours into the treasury and small brewers are given greater access to the market -- and shelf space -- largely dominated by main- stream brands Labatt, Molson and Sleeman. Mark Woitzik from the Brock Street Brew- ing Company, a new microbrewery opening in Whitby this spring, said the announce- ment is a step in the right direction but there’s still a long way to go. “It is a small step and it’s good that they’re taking this step to incorporate greater beer sales but the market should be opened up,” he said. “We’re not necessarily saying we want beer sold in convenience stores and stuff like that but craft brewers should have the ability to have their beer sold in commercially viable areas that aren’t necessarily the Beer Store -- maybe like a craft beer market.” Some craft brewers, including Jack Doak from the Old Flame Brewery in Port Perry, said the timing of the announcement makes him question the company’s motives. An article published in the Toronto Star last month revealed details of an agreement signed in 2000 between the publicly owned Liquor Control Board of Ontario and the Beer Store. Under the agreement, which is now subject of a complaint from Restau- rants Canada to the federal Competition Bureau, the LCBO is restricted from sell- ing beer in any size larger than a six-pack, which leaves more lucrative sales of 12- and 24-packs exclusively to the Beer Store. “I believe what the Beer Store is doing is they’re trying to get in front of it by saying, ‘No we’re the good guy here, we want to help the craft brewers, we want to give them access to a seat on the board or we want to be part of the conversation’,” said Mr. Doak. What he would like to see instead is per- haps a joint venture between Ontario craft brewers and wineries and greater consumer access to local products. “If you want to create an industry and you want to create jobs, allow the Ontario-pro- duced products to be sold in other venues, so maybe it is a grocery store chain that has a little bit more assurance of quality opera- tions, maybe it’s a Loblaws chain as opposed to a (convenience store).” The Beer Store has denied it is trying to head off being charged a fee for its virtual monopoly on beer sales by offering to open up ownership. “This is not related to that at all,” said Beer Store spokesman Jeff Newton. While Mr. Mills said he doesn’t expect the changes to affect 5 Paddles Brewing Co. any time soon, he believes this is just a taste of what’s in store. “It’s always been a big insti- tution -- there’s the Beer Store and there’s the liquor store -- but things are changing and there are more players...which is good.” -- With files from Torstar news service WHITBY -- Ian Mills packed up bottles of beer for a customer at the 5 Paddles Brewing Company. The Beer Store, a private retailer run by three major foreign-based breweries, announced earlier this month it will open its ownership to Ontario craft brewers. Jason Liebregts / Metroland HOW THIS IMPACTS YOU • There are currently 448 outlets of the Beer Store across Ontario, including about 20 in Durham. • Small Ontario brewers (who sell fewer than 1 million litres per year at the Beer Store) won’t have to pay a listing fee for stocking two of their products at the five Beer Store locations closest to their operation, giving consumers more local beer to choose from. • Brewers can also now swap out brands on shelves so that they can make special seasonal offerings twice a year at no additional cost, further improving local beer selection. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ja n u a r y 2 1 , 2 0 1 5 15 AP OFFERS END FEBRUARY 2 ND - VISIT CHOOSENISSAN.CA OR YOUR LOCAL RETAILER THE FASTEST GROWING AUTOMOTIVE BRAND IN CANADA Over the last 12 months in the non-luxury segment. º Check out some of the reasons why Nissan is CONQUER ALL CONDITIONS NO-CHARGE INTUITIVE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE†SYSTEM ON SELECT MODELS WITH SL AWD Premiummodel shown ▲ 2015 NISSAN ROGUE 2015 NISSAN PATHFINDER INTRODUCINGTHE ALL-NEW 2015 NISSAN MURANO ON PATHFINDER S V6 CVT 4X4 ON MURANO S FWD CVT AVAILABLE FEATURES INCLUDE: •DIVIDE-N-HIDE CARGO SYSTEM • INTUITIVE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE AVAILABLE FEATURES INCLUDE: •CLASS-EXCLUSIVE DRIVER SELECTABLE MODES (2WD LOCK, 4WD LOCK, AUTO) • CLASS-EXCLUSIVE AROUND VIEW ®MONITOR AVAILABLE FEATURES INCLUDE: •STANDARD NISSAN NAVIGATION SYSTEM WITH 8.0-INCH MULTI-TOUCH CONTROL COLOUR MONITOR • INTUITIVE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SELLING PRICE STARTING FROM NEW SELLING PRICE FROM WHICH MEANS YOU PAY AWD DISCOUNT FREIGHT &FEES $33,852◆–$2,000†=$31,852 $29,998**+$1,884 =$31,882◆ Platinum model shown ▲ Platinum AWD model shown ▲ † NO CHARGEAWD † ON OTHER ROGUE MODELS NO CHARGEAWD $2,000$65◆WEEKLY ON ROGUE S FWD That’s like paying only MONTHLY LEASE≠FROM $280 WITH $0 DOWN AT 1.99%APR FOR 60 MONTHS OR HCNI-0.H 8TIM WETSYN SOITAGIVAN NASSID NRADNATS WD model shownPlatinum A ▲ WD Premium SL Amodel shown▲ )OTU, AKCOD LW, 4KCOD LW2S (EDOE MLBATCELER SEVIRE DVISULCXE-SSALC Platinum model shown▲ ◆Lease payments of $65 on the 2015 Rogue must be made on a monthly basis and cannot be made weekly. NO-CHARGE AJAX NISSAN 500 BAYLY STREET WEST,AJAX TEL: (905) 686-0555 ‘It could have been worse’: Video shows wheel slamming into car on 401 in Ajax No one hurt in mishap Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Terrifying video of a loose wheel crashing into a car on Hwy. 401 in Ajax serves as a reminder about road safety, police say. The incident, caught on a driver’s dash cam as he travelled on the highway near Salem Road Jan. 13, could easily have been deadly, said Sergeant Kerry Schmidt of the OPP. “There were no injuries, amazingly,” he said. “It could have been a lot worse.” The video, posted to YouTube, shows the view from a man’s vehicle as he trav- els in the left-hand lane on a clear day. Out of nowhere a tire appears, hops the median wall, and slams into the Toyota’s windshield. Sgt. Schmidt said the wheel came detached from an Oldsmobile that was travelling in the westbound lanes. Both vehicles involved were taken for inspection by OPP, he said. Sgt. Schmidt couldn’t confirm if any charges had been laid, but said driving an unsafe vehicle could be among infractions cited if they were. Although there are stringent rules in place for commercial vehicles -- legisla- tion was passed in response to an alarming spate of incidents involving unsafe trucks -- they don’t apply to passenger vehicles, Sgt. Schmidt said. “Because it’s a car and not a commercial vehicle there are different standards,” he said. The incident highlights two principles motorists should always have in mind -- vehicle maintenance and keeping a safe dis- tance from other cars in traffic, Sgt. Schmidt said. Detached wheels are most common when motorists are switching summer and winter tires, or after a flat has been fixed, he said. It’s important to not just secure lug nuts during changes, but also to check on them after driv- ing for a time. “Take a look at those fasteners and make sure they’re properly tightened,” Sgt. Schmidt advised. “I’ve seen cars and trucks missing wheel fasteners.” The other lesson is to keep a safe distance from other vehicles in order to assure ade- quate response time in the event of a mishap. “Increase your distance,” Sgt. Schmidt cau- tioned. “You can have no time to react, so fol- lowing distance is a huge thing.” WATCH the video story @ durhamregion.com newsdurhamnewsdurhamnewsdurham It’s Coming... 1/2 PRICE DAY • SAT. In the big picture, anyone who has inten- tions of returning to the hockey club next season has a month to leave a favourable impression in the memory bank of GM/ head coach Paul Coffey. Confirming that he has committed to being back behind the bench next season, Coffey issued a stern warning to those on the roster who may be entertaining the idea of coasting through the final stretch of the season. “Nothing is a given next year. Those guys have to realize these next 12 games, you are trying out for next year too,” said Coffey. “You’re not just trying to make the playoffs, you’re trying out for next year. “Every game you play you are being test- ed. Your coaches are watching. Your peers are watching. Teammates are watching. That’s a consistency we need to get. “Some guys are giving it every night. If guys just think it’s automatic they are going to be back next year, they might be back, but they won’t be as high up the totem pole as they think they are going to be because I have a good memory. I don’t forget.” The Panthers dropped a pair of games on the weekend, 6-1 on home ice to Stouffville on Friday, Jan. 16 and 5-3 to Orangeville the following day, extending their losing streak to three games. Against Stouffville, the Panthers were down 2-0 heading into the third, but sur- rendered four in a row to fall back 6-0 before Mark Tenuta scored with just 27 seconds left in the game. Goaltender Aus- tin Washkurak started, but was pulled in the third period. “I thought we played really well until the third period,” said Coffey. “The first peri- od shots were 19-8 (for us), second peri- od 17-10, we had trouble scoring goals. Stouffville are a pretty good team, they came out in the third and got a goal pretty quick, then it kind of fell apart.” Unable to attend the game in Orangeville due to another commitment, Coffey wasn’t overly pleased with the game report he received in the 5-3 loss. “The feedback I got was terrible start, and not enough guys willing to compete. That’s what you get at this level. Everybody is tired. It’s back-to-back games, but you have to be ready to go.” Blake Coffey scored in the first period for the Panthers, while power-play goals came from Riley Devine in the second and Bran- don Salerno in the third. Eric Pitcher got the start in goal and faced 40 shots. Through 42 games, the Panthers are 16-20-1-5, sitting ninth in the North-East Conference, two points back of both New- market and Wellington for one of the final eight playoff spots. With a roster a couple of players under the limit, the Panthers will have to go with what they’ve got the rest of the way, which causes a bit of a comfort level on the roster that Coffey isn’t com- fortable with. “I think what’s happening here is we don’t have any moves we can make as per not playing guys if they’re not playing well. I think some guys are taking advantage of that. I don’t think it’s fair. “We have a couple of guys in their last year and you would hope as a team they would owe it to them to get them in the playoffs.” The next three games will be key for the Panthers’ playoff chances, hosting Missis- sauga on Friday Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m., then visiting Stouffville on Jan. 24 and Newmar- ket on Jan. 29. Stern warning issued to Panthers PICKERING -- Pickering Panthers’ Riley Devine chased after the puck during Ontario Junior Hockey League action against the Stouffville Spirit, at the Pickering Recreation Complex. Sabrina Byrnes / Metroland Pickering atom selects find winning formula Reach championship game of tournament held in Milton MILTON -- The Pickering Panthers atom select team participated in its first tourna- ment of the season with some heart-stop- ping action. This team had yet to win a game before the tournament started. After a loss in their first game of the tournament, they pulled together for a 6-0 victory in the second game, a decisive first win. They then faced a must-win situation against a team from Milton. Down 1-0 late in the third, the Panthers pulled their goalie and tied it up with 45 seconds on the clock. Keeping the goalie on the bench, the Pan- thers did it again with 27 seconds remain- ing. Now it was Milton’s turn to pull their goalie, but to no avail with the Panthers winning 2-1 and moving on to the semis. It’s not easy to top that game, but the semifinal against Oakville proved Pickering could do it again. Down 2-1 with less than a minute to go in the game, the Panthers again pulled their goalie and got the tying goal. With no OT for the semi, this one went straight to a shootout. The first three Panther shooters all scored while the Pan- ther goalie stopped all three of the Oakville shooters. Unfortunately the Panthers came up a little short in the final, taking home silver, losing 3-1 to Stoney Creek. What a great tournament for a team that had never won a game until then. Team members include Toby Wallace, John McFater, Nicholas Pagniello, Blake Morrison, Greg Bonnie, Steven Subra- tee, Shane Bowser, Dylan Nicolle, Chris Naughton, Jake Bennett, Graydon Ander- sen, Liam Malloy, Jackson Blellock, J.D. Archbold, Nicho- las Coughlan. Coaches are Ryan Ben- nett, Kevin Malloy, Mark Pagniello, Trevor Nicolle. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ja n u a r y 2 1 , 2 0 1 5 18 AP LAWLAW Comprehensive legal programs at triOS prepare you with a rich and thorough educational experience.
