Heavy water contained inside reactor; no impact to public, environment PICKERING -- Thousands of litres of radioactive heavy water leaked in a reac- tor at the Pickering nuclear station Friday. The incident happened in Unit 7, which was undergoing a scheduled mainte- nance outage, at about 4 p.m. on Nov. 21. A valve on the moderator system opened inside the reactor building, Ontario Power Generation reported on Twitter. “Workers noticed the leak, a radioactive leak of heavy water in the reactor build- ing,” Neal Kelly, a spokesman for OPG, said in an interview. “The building is designed to contain the leak, which it did. All the water was contained.” Mr. Kelly noted there was “no impact on station staff, the public or the environ- ment.” The cause of the leak is under investiga- tion, he noted, adding 6,900 litres of heavy water leaked. That works out to about one-third to one-quarter of the amount of water in a backyard swimming pool, Mr. Kelly point- ed out. “The workers fixed the valve and returned the unit to its pre-event condi- tion,” he said. When the leak was discovered, OPG notified the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, which regulates the nuclear industry, the City of Pickering and Dur- ham Region. “Anything we have to change going for- ward with our procedures, we’ll definitely do that,” Mr. Kelly added. A report on the incident will be written and filed with the CNSC. A 16-year-old Pickering boy has been charged in connection with the incident, at Yoon’s Conve- nience on Kingston Road at about 6 p.m. Nov. 20. Durham police said the incident began when a sus- pect entered the store with a knife and demanded cash. The bandit leapt over the counter and struggled briefly with a clerk, police said. The employee fled the store while the suspect grabbed a golf club and tried to smash open the till, police said. The worker and a man who happened upon the scene held the door to the store shut, hoping to keep the suspect inside until police arrived. But the suspect shattered the door with the golf club, then reached through the door and stabbed the witness in the hand. Cops arrested the suspect after a brief struggle. The witness was taken to hospital for treatment of a cut to his hand; the clerk was cut by flying glass but did not require medical attention, police said. A 16-year-old Pickering boy faces numerous charg- es including robbery and weapons offences. His iden- tity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The charges came in just three nights, as Durham cops launched the program Nov. 20. Stops were set up in Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa and Claring- ton. Police stopped 1,063 vehicles and administered 52 roadside breath tests. In addition to the 15 impaired charges, 11 drivers received three-day suspensions for registering warning readings. We will also be featuring the people and volunteers associated with Durham Hospice, the active role they take, the training, the friendships and emotions involved. UXBRIDGE -- Many of the details over the past 13 years are a blur to Karen Guest, but the day she found out she had cancer is as vivid as if it were yesterday. The day started like most others, report- ing for work in the morning; but a doctor’s appointment was scheduled in the after- noon, a followup one week after having a lump removed from her chest. “I couldn’t think who to call because I was just blown away with bad news,” she says, recounting that day while sitting comfortably in a chair of the home she shares with family in Uxbridge, an IV drip attached. “I remember my cheeks going numb. My face felt numb as if I’d been smashed into a wall.” It wasn’t what she envisioned when she came to the area from New Brunswick as a 21 year old, the youngest of a family of seven, with three brothers and three sis- ters. She moved in with one of her sisters in Newcastle, “I came up, saw the lights and thought there was more life to offer me up here,” she recalls. Within a couple of years she married and was living in Scarborough, but after a couple of break-ins to the home, the fam- ily moved to Stouffville. Karen and her husband, Paul, now divorced, had three kids, Brooke (now 32), Jeremy (31) and Emma (21). Following the divorce she moved to Mount Albert, where her life took a wrong turn some 13 years ago. “One day I was reading my daughter a book when she was just little. I reached over and my wrist hit a lump in my breast,” she recalls. A doctor’s appointment followed, a mammogram and then a biopsy. The news was good. “(The doctor) said I was one of the lucky ones. It came back. It’s not cancerous,” adding that over time the lump would get bigger and shrink, but not to worry. The doctor suggested coming back for a fol- lowup three years later. “A year later the lump was getting big- ger and bigger,” she says. “The girls were starting to tell me it looked like a third breast growing out of me. So, I went back to the doctor and told him I just wanted it removed.” She returned a week later after working the morning, to receive some unexpected news. “I was hit with it. It was cancer.” In one year the lump which she was ini- tially told not to worry about had spread cancer to her lymph nodes and two to three spots in her breast. “I was angry because it was a mistake they made,” she says bitterly. “I did my job. I found it when it was only the size of my thumbnail. They let it grow, not me. “If I didn’t go back for the three years like they said, I’d be dead probably.” The fight was on. A double mastecto- my and hysterectomy followed. There was chemotherapy and radiation. Lots of treatments. A decade, the benchmark to be clear, almost passed. If the first time she heard she had cancer was unexpected, the sec- ond time was devastating. “They said if I make it 10 years I probably beat it. A month before 10 years was up I started not feeling good. I went back and (cancer) was in my bones everywhere.” She was given two and a half years to live. With that time frame, her time is up. “I went through everything,” she said of the range of emotions after 10 years had almost passed from the original diagno- sis. “Why me? The anger. There is still a small bit of anger there and it will always be there because they messed up, not me. “Because of their mistake, I’m losing my life.” At the urging of her family, she turned to Durham Hospice for some support. Amy Jefferies has been her volunteer since the spring of 2013, and the two embrace with a warm hug just prior to the interview starting. “I got Amy and I love her to pieces,” says Karen. “I tell her everything and I depend on her. I look forward to her visits every week.” Recently, as sick as she’s been, Karen travelled back home to New Brunswick with her sisters to visit her brother Garth, who is having some health struggles of his own. `It was suggested that if she could make the trip, she should go. “It was just wanting to go down east where I grew up and see everything,” she says, her voice trailing off. Karen has come to terms with her ulti- mate fate, but she remains defiant to this point, and won’t change. “I try to set goals,” she says of coping. “My son is getting married (in July), so I’ve got a long-term goal there. Goals are good. Set them far enough that you want to reach them. You don’t want to give up before you reach it.” That’s one goal she’s vows to achieve. “Oh I hope so,” she says with optimism. “My son told me I’m going to dance with him, so I better.” UXBRIDGE -- Karen Guest, front, and Durham Hospice caregiver, Amy Jefferies. Ms. Guest is terminally ill with cancer but is making plans to attend her son’s wedding next July. Celia Klemenz / Metroland‘‘One day I was reading my daughter a book when she was just little. How can judg- ment be passed? Even if Mr. Chapman was lying in a hospital bed with the exact same diagnosis, how is allowing the medi- cal community to control your last months and days with drugs (that end up killing you) considered harder and a more digni- fied and moral way to die? When will people think outside of their own judgments? It is not about what you would or wouldn’t do. The real question is whether Canadians should be able to exercise the right to have access to physi- cian-assisted suicide. Do we keep animals lying around until the brutal end? No, we would be called inhumane if we did that. I have no idea what I would do if I had the same diagnosis as Brittany Maynard. It is irrelevant what I would do. It is rele- vant, however, that a law be passed in my own country allowing myself and all other Canadians the choice to access this right. Alisa Arbour Follow your passion and leave your mark A little advice: Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something (unless it’s illegal, of course). I know it sounds trite, but it’s true. If you follow your instinct and passion and are truly committed to something, it will happen for you. Back in 2001, I was at the CFL and had a young man by the name of Eric Holmes calling me on a regular basis. He really wanted to work at the Canadian Football League. He started calling in late October and we were in the midst of planning for that year’s Grey Cup in Montreal. So I had to keep putting Eric off. Not on purpose -- I just didn’t have time. I told him to call me back in early December once the Grey was out of the way and like clockwork, he did. So we met. I was instantly impressed by three things. One, he was from Oshawa and I thought it would be cool to have another person from Durham Region at head office. Two, he was in the sports management program at Brock University so he obviously was serious about his chosen career. Three, and most importantly: he was undaunted. He really wanted this and made it clear. It also helped that he was a mature young man, knew what he wanted and knew what he had to sac- rifice to get there. So I hired him and let me say I don’t regret it one bit. In fact, it was the best hire I ever made. I put him in a position to succeed and he did just that. Any assignment he was given, he took control of and saw it through to completion. On time. In perfect working order. With nary a grumble. What more could you ask? Well, young Eric was named director of commu- nications for the Toronto Argos and is celebrating his 10-year anniversary with the club this year. A huge milestone. He’s won a pair of Grey Cups in that time. And all of it came by way of passion and hard work. On the eve of his first Grey Cup win, he called me at home just to say thanks. In the middle of all the madness, he found the time to make that call. It just confirmed my belief that he was a class act. If you have a fire burning in your belly and a pas- sion for something, as they say in the ad Just Do It. Follow your heart and leave your mark. -- Shawn Lackie worked in television for more than 20 years until he got his dream job as VP communications for the Canadian Football League. He lives in Port Perry. Shawn Lackie Guest column Making your mark B utting out of the tobacco black market Ontario’s move to fight contraband tobacco sales serves two important purposes. The crackdown on contraband tobacco sales and the “underground economy” will help the provincial government squeeze additional revenues into the provincial trea- sury, and will force citizens who flout the law by purchasing illegal tobacco products to reconsider, particularly if there are steep fines associated with the crackdown. We’re not talking chump change here: the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation estimates that the Ontario government foregoes up to $1.1 billion in revenues annually from the province’s lucrative contraband market. Looked at another way, analysis shows that Ontario has seized 239 million illegal ciga- rettes, 3.4 million untaxed cigars and 97.8 million grams (9,800 kgs) of untaxed fine- cut and other tobacco products since 2008. Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sou- sa’s announcement on the issue last week during the Wynne government’s fall fis- cal update, signalled that the past practice by successive governments of looking the other way is over. Considering that the Province still has a $12.5-billion hole in its budget while prom- ising to balance the books by 2017-2018, the government’s hand was forced. The expec- tation, should the government make gains in its crackdown on illegal tobacco sales and smuggling, is that it could reap up to $700 million in lost revenue. In that con- text, it proves the old adage about necessity being the mother of invention. But smokers across the province are com- plicit in sustaining the black market through the purchase of contraband tobacco. And, Public Safety Canada asserted in a 2009 executive summary that the largest quan- tity of illicit tobacco in Canada is primar- ily centred in operations based on Aborigi- nal reserves and territories located on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border. It’s clear that the Province must address the issue if it is to reclaim lost revenue. But Durham residents who choose to smoke must also make a personal and abiding decision to stop supporting the black mar- ket. For the sake of a few dollars in savings they are essentially contributing, howev- er indirectly and incrementally, to higher taxes and ongoing deficits in Ontario. Finally, however, the provincial govern- ment must be held to greater account and do a far more competent job of being fis- cal stewards on behalf of Ontarians. Years of waste and scandal linger -- a prominent factor in ongoing deficits -- that won’t be remotely addressed through a crackdown on the underground economy. There is much room to improve, certainly, on both fiscal files. Charles Manson meets his match Well, the cafeteria of California’s Corco- ran State Prison must be abuzz with plans these days. Not escape plans, mind you, but wedding plans. Charles Manson, the 80-year-old convicted serial killer, cellblock line dance champion and one of the joint’s most eligible bachelors, is finally tying the knot. Twenty-six-year-old bride-to-be Afton ‘Star’ Burton must be one special gal to lure Chuck into swapping one ball and chain for another. Heartthrob Manson, or Chuckles, as he’s known inside, is no stranger to female atten- tions. Prison authorities say Manson gets an enormous amount of mail from female suit- ors, many of whom are intelligent enough to address a letter and figure out correct postage. Seems a lot of gals are suckers for that dead-eyed, remorseless killer look. Up to this point Chuck has resisted their mono- syllabic, incorrectly punctuated charms. But that all changed when his ‘Star’ arrived. So smitten is the octogenarian Romeo that he has papered the walls of his prison cell with every letter his fianceé has ever writ- ten him, even the very early ones printed in crayon. Undeterred by naysayers who point to the whopping 54-year age gap between the two, the happy couple is still very much intent on making it legal. Gosh, these two sure are something. It’s not often in this day and age that you come across two people who are able to look beyond all the decades of differences and see only their shared rage and psychosis. It must be love. Meanwhile the two are said to be up to their swastika-tattooed eyebrows in prep- arations for the big event. Details are still forthcoming but it looks like Charles will be sporting a smart, Nazi grey tux with death’s- head cummerbund and jackboots while the comely Star has opted for a stunning, long-sleeved, floor-length gown in electric- chair blue from Donatella Versace’s ‘Soli- tary’ collection. The couple has asked Ivan ‘The Shiv’ Pinkowski to be Best Man while Frank ‘Big Agnes’ Caldwell will be holding Maid of Honour duties, provided he is out of ‘the hole’ in time. Lefty Burkowitz was to be the ring-bearer but he seems to have gone missing after ratting out the Fenucci broth- ers’ contraband hooch operation. Charles and Star say to bring your appe- tites folks, as the event will be catered by not one but three of the hottest prison food ser- vices in the state: On the Lamb, Fryers with Priors and the exclusive Bread Man Walk- ing. The jailhouse will definitely be rock- ing that night as well with entertainment provided by such prison notables as Stoolie Andrews, Shank Sinatra and the ever popu- lar Snitch Miller and the Cheese-eater five. Things are a little more up in the air when it comes to the lovebirds’ honeymoon plans, however. Charles had booked the sumptuous Capone Suite in Protective Cus- tody for the wedding night nuptials until he was informed that, as a life prisoner with no current parole date, he’s ineligible for con- jugal visits. Luckily for these two starry-eyed kids, neither one of them can even spell the word conjugal, let alone understand what it means. And finally, guests are notified that Charles and Star are registered at Williams- Sonoma, Pottery Barn and Aces Guns ‘n’ Ammo. High on their wish list are such items as a hacksaw, file, and ‘anything pointy’. Congratulations all. -- Durham resident Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column. 10 Coldest temperatures recorded in Canada Enter Laughing Neil Crone Actor, comic, writer Let’s Talk Weigh in on topics of the day www.facebook. com/newsdurham Poll HELLO WINTER: Although Durham Region escaped the worst of the storm that swept through last week, our neighbours across Lake Ontario suf- fered several feet of accumulation. Karhleigh Vicky Gangemi: I’m a new driver and even I wasn’t thrown off by a few flurries. Just take your time, leave earlier and be extra care- ful. You’ll get there when you get there. Doesn’t hurt to have winter tires. See people going 100 on hwy 2 in the 70 zone Mariah MacPherson: I live in south Oshawa and the plows have gone by about 5 times since this afternoon, so I think we are good to go ....they are pretty prepared Jenn Hurley-Cairns: For 5 centime- ters? Ridiculous. Jennifer Hazzard Lewis: What hap- pened in Buffalo has made me real- ize that I need to get some supplies in the house in case we get a storm like that. 1. Feb. 3, 1947 Snag, YT -63 C 2. Ms. Lumb started working as a gener- al duty nurse at the hospital, which had just expanded from 38 beds and 12 bas- sinets. She eventually became an obstet- rics supervisor, a relief night supervisor and a relief head nurse. “You wore many hats,” she recalled. She remembers fixing sandwiches late at night if patients got hungry and riding in the ambulance with them if they had to be transferred to another hospital. “It’s a pleasure to see how we’ve moved forward,” she said. On Nov. 21, The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation celebrated the 50th anniversary of that expansion that helped the hospital evolve into what it is today, an acute-care community hos- pital with a modern 24-hour emergency department. The hospital, which sees more than 60,000 patient visits per year, became Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering after merging with Centenary Hospital in 1998 and has experienced large renova- tions over the years. “Let this be the beginning of the next 50 years,” Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan said at the celebration. The hospital this year also marks 60 years since it officially opened on Har- wood Avenue. The origin of the hospital can be traced back to a one-storey wooden building on King’s Crescent in Ajax, built during the Second World War. This 30-bed emer- gency hospital was run by Defense Industries Ltd. as part of the munitions plant operated by the Canadian gov- ernment. When the war ended, the plant and the hos- pital closed, but the community ral- lied to raise the funds needed to open the Ajax-Pickering General Hospital. In 1954 it opened, incorporating the orig- inal wooden building, which had been relocated to Harwood Avenue. Ten years later the hospital was expanded. At the recent celebration, retired nurses and health-care staff, as well as auxiliary members and current staff -- dressed up in 1960’s-style outfits for the occasion -- sift- ed through doc- umentation and photos of the hospital’s past. “These are very precious photo- graphs,” said Ms. Lumb. “Some are one of a kind.” Ms. Lumb had worked at the hos- pital for nearly 30 years when she retired in 1993. “It was a lot of fun in those days,” she said. “We worked hard but it was a lot of fun.” Dr. Romas Stas recalled joining the hospital in 1972. “The emergency department consist- ed of four rooms,” he said. While health care and services have advanced over the years, the foundation hasn’t changed. “The one thing that remains the same is people get sick and people get care,” he said. The hospital today features a wide range of programs including obstetrics, pediatrics, surgery, mental health and regional cardiac care. And just as it did at the start, the hos- pital continues to rely on the loyalty of the communities it serves, enjoying generous support for annual fundrais- ing to make state-of-the-art equipment possible for the medical staff to care for patients. In 2011, the hospital was able to pur- chase an MRI machine after the com- munity rallied to raise $5 million. “We are very fortunate in west Dur- ham to have this incredible health-care facility with great staff, physicians and volunteers,” said Joan Wideman, chair- woman of the Rouge Valley Health Sys- tem board of directors. More than 23,000 people have put their names forward to get involved with the Games spanning the Greater Toronto Area. In Durham Region baseball and softball will be played in Ajax at the President’s Choice Ajax Ballpark (Audley Recreation Centre), while weightlifting and boxing take place in Oshawa at the General Motors Centre. For the Parapan Am Games bocci and judo will take place at the Abilities Centre in Whitby. Tracey Vaughn-Barrett is the Ajax co-chair- woman of the Pan Am Games and while she’s happy so many people have come forward to volunteer at the Games, it’s difficult to know how many of these people will be helping ‘inside the fence’ and who will be available to volunteer ‘outside the fence.’ Being inside the fence means the volunteer will be inside the ballpark. Outside the fence volunteers will be dispersed throughout Ajax, Oshawa and Whitby, helping visitors and residents enjoy their Pan Am experiences. Those are the vol- unteers Ms. Vaughn-Barrett wants to make sure there are enough of. “We need as many volunteers as possible to deliver a successful event,” Ms. Vaughn-Bar- rett said. Organizers are hoping to attract about 1,200 volunteers for Ajax while Oshawa will be look- ing for about 400. Unlike the ‘inside the fence’ volunteers who are required to work 12 shifts, each eight to 12 hours in length, the ‘outside the fence’ volun- teers will only be required to work four hours per day. “You don’t have to be an expert at any spe- cific thing,” Ms. Vaughn-Barrett said. “All you have to have is a great attitude and be wel- coming. If you can smile, we can find a role for you.” Volunteers working ‘outside the fence’ don’t have to be 16 years old like the ‘inside’ volun- teers. They only have to be 14. Ms. Vaughn-Barrett said many of the volun- teers will be information ambassadors in the community. Their task will be to direct people and hand out information so visitors and resi- dents know what is going on throughout the two-week event. “Training is provided and we’ll make it as easy as possible,” she said. Students looking for volunteer hours can make good use of this opportunity but anoth- er benefit is the OSAP breaks the Ontario government has made for this event. Stu- dents who volunteer will be eligible to receive OSAP interest- and payment-free grace peri- od extensions or reduced pre-study contribu- tions. “The OSAP benefits for students are amaz- ing. This is a great benefit for them,” Ms. Vaughn-Barrett said. Another area where volunteers will be required is for the Torch Relay that takes place over the course of 41 days leading up to the opening of the Games on July 10, 2015. About 50 volunteers will be needed locally for the Durham part of the relay. “It’s another way to engage in the Games,” Ms. Vaughn-Barrett said. Laura Tegelberg has been charged with co- ordinating volunteers for Ajax. She said for those volunteers who have already registered there will be information going out in the near future. For anyone else who would like to get involved she can be reached at 905-619-2529, ext. 7271 or e-mailed at laura.tegelberg@ajax. ca. Visit www.panamajax.ca/volunteer to vol- unteer online. Two new benefits are available in 2015-2016 and include: • A waiver that exempts students from the pre-study period contribution (a contribution from the money you earn up to 16 weeks prior to the start of their studies). • A longer grace period before they need to repay their OSAP loan or interest charged on that loan if they complete their studies on or after March 1, 2015. Pre-study contribution period waiver • Students are expected to work for up to 16 weeks prior to the start of their studies. A contribution is calculated based on the money they make and is included in calculating how much OSAP they receive. • If they complete their volunteer assignments at the Games, they could be eligible for a waiver of their pre-study contribution -- which means that their earnings during the summer would not be factored into their overall OSAP financial need assessment. To be eligible to receive this benefit, students must: • Be a full-time student at a postsecondary school approved for OSAP • Be enrolled full-time in studies anytime between Aug. 1, 2015 - July 31, 2016 • Complete their volunteer assignments for the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games One-year grace period Students are not required to make payments on their OSAP loans for the first six months after they complete their full-time postsecondary studies. After this grace period, they need to repay the loan. However, for those who volunteer at the Pan Am Games they can apply to extend this grace period for another six months if they: • Are finishing full-time postsecondary studies on or after March 1, 2015 (and not returning to postsecondary studies) During this grace period, Ontario will pay the interest on both qualifying students’ Ontario and Canada Student Loans meaning they wouldn’t be required to make any payments on their full-time OSAP loans for one year after leaving postsecondary studies. AJAX NISSAN 500 BAYLY STREET WEST,AJAX TEL: (905) 686-0555 Number of drivers impaired by drugs is up, police say DURHAM -- With the holiday season fast approaching, the Ontario Provincial Police will be out in force with its annual Festive RIDE program. The campaign will begin province-wide on Nov. 24 and run until Jan. 2. While the number of motorists who continue to drive while impaired by drugs and alcohol is small, according to the OPP, which patrols all provincial high- ways within Durham Region, the harm they can cause is impossible to calculate. The OPP is urging the public to drive only if sober and to discourage oth- ers from get- ting behind the wheel while impaired. “The OPP goal is to get through the holiday season without losing a single life to impaired driving. We will use a combination of public education and focussed enforcement to drive home the message that impaired driving on Ontar- io roads is never acceptable,” said OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes. While common perception may be that the Festive RIDE program targets those driving under the influence of alcohol, the OPP is also reminding the public that driving while impaired by drugs other than alcohol can be just as dangerous and is against the law. OPP Drug Recognition Experts (DRE) will be working over the holiday season to remove drivers from the road. According to an OPP release, offi- cers have seen an increase in drivers impaired by drugs. In 2014, up to the end of September, a total of 5,685 impaired charges were laid by the OPP, which is down 17 per cent from the same period in 2013 which saw 6,842 impaired charges laid. However, for the same period, there was a 32 per cent increase in the number of drug impaired driving charges. The OPP is asking the public to join the Festive RIDE conversation on Facebook (facebook.com/ontarioprovincialpolice) by sharing stories, thoughts and person- al experiences with impaired drivers and driving. The club’s losing streak in the Ontario Junior Hockey League reached five over the weekend with a 7-3 loss to Durham rival Whitby Fury on home ice Friday, followed by a 3-1 loss in Aurora on Sunday. “We’re a little snake-bitten right now,” said GM/head coach Paul Coffey of his team’s struggles. “We went into Aurora and played real well. That’s arguably the best team in the loop. We played well. We just can’t score goals right now. We will though.” Against Whitby, the power play was click- ing for the Panthers, who scored on three of eight chances with the man advantage. Bran- don Salerno and Doug Carter scored power- play goals in the first period and Matteo Con- dotta added another in the second for the Panthers, who were down 3-2 after the first period and 5-3 through two. Aurora was up 3-0 after two periods of Sun- day’s game before Brian Hurley netted one for the Panthers in the third to get them on the board. The Panthers were also busy on the trade front last week, dealing goaltender Jordan Cartney and forward Joseph Mitchell to Hamilton. With little flexibility with avail- able cards to sign players, the deal was a cash transaction. “I looked at our roster when I took over and I said, ‘Where are all these players? Where are all the players we signed?’” said Coffey. “We signed them and they’re not here any- more. I don’t even know where they are. “Now we’re in a position where we can’t get rid of anything and get something back.” The Panthers did manage to sign Justin Bennett, a 16 year old from Stouffville who has been practising with the team this sea- son. He had three points in five OHL Cup games for his Vaughan Kings minor midg- et team last season, and was selected in the 14th round by the Barrie Colts in the OHL draft back in the spring. “(Barrie Colts head coach) Dale Hawer- chuk is a good buddy of mine and Dale loved him, loved his character,” said Coffey in describing Bennett. “He’s the type of guy who could be a Barrie Colt as some point.” The Panthers sit at 9-12-1-3, and have slipped four points back of a playoff spot. They will be in Lindsay on Friday night, and home to St. Michael’s on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. PICKERING -- The Pickering High School senior girls’ basketball team lost in the OFSAA AAAA gold medal game 71-45 to Campion. The team finished the season with a record of 33-2. Submitted photo Silver for Pickering at OFSAA Basketball team loses 71-45 in Quad-A championship game Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Bad timing. In a game when the senior girls’ basket- ball team at Pickering High School needed its best for last, it didn’t get it at the OFSAA AAAA championships in Guelph. The No. 1 seed at the provincial tournament came up one victory shy in its amazing season, falling 71-45 in the gold-medal game to Campion. Head coach Mike Gordensky summed up his team’s troubles in the final game in one word. “Us,” he said when asked what the differ- ence was in the final. “We saved our worst game of the year for the OFSAA final. We were mentally and physically out of it. “We played scared, nervous and (Cam- pion) played really well. Their role play- ers stepped up and made big shots. Once we got down we didn’t know how to react. We’d only been down a couple of games all year. “We played our best game of the year the night before in the semifinal and our abso- lute worst game of the year in the final. It was night and day. I didn’t expect that at all. (Campion) played great and we didn’t.” Pickering had a pretty easy run to the final, putting together four wins in a row to reach the championship game. They got 19 points from Rachel Woodburn and 10 from Nikita Telesford in the opener for a 44-33 win over 11th-seeded Innisdale, then crushed No. 16 seed St. Max Kolbe 56-25 to finish out the opening day Thurs- day. In the quarter-finals on Friday, Wood- burn again led the way with 17 in a 49-17 victory over eighth-seeded Northern. In the semifinal, the game Gordensky described as the best one of the season for his team, Pickering beat No. 4 seed Loyola 62-40 on the strength of 13 points from Woodburn to lead the way. Pickering fell behind 23-11 in the open- ing quarter and was down 37-28 at the half to third-seeded Campion in Satur- day’s final at the University of Guelph. Still within range after three quarters at 48-35, Pickering had a disastrous fourth quarter, out-scored 23-10 in the 71-45 loss. Wood- burn, for the fourth time in five games, led the team offensively with 17 points. “They were in a state of shock and extremely disappointed in how they played,” said Gordensky of the under- standable mood following the game. “It’s tough losing, but we’re not 25 points worse than Campion. “It’s obviously disappointing because it’s the last game and the one you remember the most. Our only loss to a high school team was the last game of the year.” Pickering was certainly worthy of its No. 1 ranking heading in to OFSAA. They entered the provincial championship after going undefeated in LOSSA league play, and beating Dunbarton for the title. They also collected three tournament cham- pionships by winning at the University of Windsor, Notre Dame Classic and Centen- nial Lady Colts Classic. The only loss of the season prior to OFSAA came to Bill Croth- ers, an elite school of excellence, in the final of the St. Mary Tip Off Classic. Ironically, Pickering had played Campi- on earlier this year, winning in the semi- finals at the Centennial tournament, but the tables were turned in the OFSAA final. Despite not winning the last game of the season, Gordensky listed off the team’s accomplishments, keeping the big picture in perspective. “When you look back at the whole sea- son, and even the last two seasons, a fourth place at OFSAA, second at OFSAA, this year we were 33-2, we have six losses in the last two years, two LOSSA gold med- als. You can’t be unhappy,” he said. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • No v e m b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 4 28 P Oshawa Generals just keep finding ways to win Brian McNair bmcnair@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- It seems not to mat- ter who’s in and who’s out of the Oshawa Generals lineup this sea- son; the bottom line has almost always been the same. They win. The Generals have achieved that bottom line 19 times in 22 games this season, and own the best win- ning percentage in the Ontario Hockey League with 39 points, slightly better than the Erie Otters, who also have 39 points but in 23 games. Sunday’s win, their eighth in a row, may have been the most impressive yet for the Generals, coming in the absence of a sus- pended Hunter Smith and despite the fact their top scorer, Cole Cas- sels, was ejected midway through for a check-to-the-head major that will likely lead to a suspen- sion. The short-term ramifications of Cassels’ offence didn’t much faze the Generals, who killed off the five-minute penalty, tied the game shortly after on a Josh Sterk goal and won it 3-2 over the Owen Sound Attack thanks to another monster effort from Michael Dal Colle, who scored twice in the third period. Dal Colle put the Generals ahead twice, first on a lucky bounce and finally on a tremendous effort that saw him weave in from beyond the blue-line and rip a wrist shot past the glove of Attack goalie Jack Flinn with 13:39 remaining. Afterward, Dal Colle admitted he tried to ramp up his game in the absence of Cassels and Smith, who was slapped with a one-game suspension from a fight in Friday’s 6-4 win over the Belleville Bulls. “Those are two great players, some of the best players in the league, so when they’re out, some guys have to step it up, and I was trying to lead the team, and lead the younger guys,” he said. “The crowd was great tonight, great atmosphere. To get that win against a great Western Confer- ence team with some key play- ers out is huge for our confidence right now.” The Attack came into the game with a record of 12-5-1-4 and fresh off consecutive 3-2 wins over two other East Division teams, the Kingston Frontenacs Friday and Belleville Bulls Saturday. Two more home games are on tap, 7:35 p.m. Friday against the Niagara IceDogs and 2:05 p.m. on Sunday against the Barrie Colts. Friday’s game is the annual Teddy Bear Toss night.
