Mayor Dave Ryan is seeking re-election. He was first elected to Pickering council in 1994 as Ward 1 City councillor and made the jump to mayor in 2003. His top priori- ties include jobs, transportation and health care. He finds himself in a rematch with former councillor Mau- rice Brenner. The two were separated by 1,700 votes in the 2010 mayoral race. Mr. Brenner is concerned about property tax affordability. Political newcomer Edoh Apaloo has a background in finance and law, and high property taxes are his main priority as well. PICKERING -- Dayna Gilbert, urban planner, and Katarzyna Sliwa, both representing Durham Live, spoke at Pickering council chambers. The City’s planning and development committee is considering a new staff report that recommends endorsing a rezoning application for the proposed Durham Live development, which could include a casino. After an exhausting debate that spanned two meetings, council’s planning and devel- opment committee voted 4-3 on Sept. 8 to endorse a re-zon- ing application from Pickering Developments Inc. “I think we made the right deci- sion,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “We had a positive staff report that says this is a project that will be beneficial for the City of Pickering.” See PICKERING page 10 Public open house on Rouge National Park in Pickering Sept. 16 PICKERING -- Parks Canada is looking for feedback from Pickering residents on plans for the new Rouge National Urban Park. An open house is planned for Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Pickering Recreation Complex. Residents also have the option filling out an online survey by Sept. 30. This summer, the federal govern- ment launched a public consulta- tion process for the draft manage- ment plan, a guiding document for managing the park over the next 10 years. In addition to setting targets and priorities, the plan lays out a frame- work for what the park will look like. A new City of Pickering report raises a few concerns about the draft plan. For example, the plan identifies six proposed park wel- come areas, however they are not easily accessible to Pickering resi- dents. Another concern is that a main multi-use trail in the park will pri- marily run north/south. The City report says there is a need to estab- lish east/west trail connections to provide convenient access for Pickering residents. Rouge National Urban Park will be Canada’s first national urban park and the Greater Toronto Area’s first nationally protected area. Legal Aid Ontario launches Durham family law centre Centre will help residents prepare for court appearances Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- Legal Aid Ontario has opened a new centre in Durham, offering legal help to Durham residents navigating the family court system. The new centre, located at 111 Simcoe St. N. in Oshawa, serves low-income and working families navigating the court sys- tem on issues such as separations, child custody agreements, child or spousal sup- port, restraining orders, domestic violence and change of support orders. Eligibility is based on income and rang- es from a gross income of $18,000 for a sin- gle person to $43,000 for a family of five or more. Province-wide, two-thirds of people who go to family court are underrepresented by a lawyer and the numbers in Durham are higher, as high as 70 per cent at first appearances. “It slows down the court process,” said Tom Tordoff, manager of Legal Aid Ontar- io’s Oshawa Family Law Service Centre. “Clients, if they’re underrepresented, the average client really doesn’t know what they need to put together in their docu- ments.” In many cases, the documents present- ed by clients are incomplete or poorly pre- pared. Mr. Tordoff said people put a great deal of extraneous information into their filings which are sometimes handwritten. “Typically the person is in a highly emo- tional state ... and most will write a long rambling story which the judge will have difficulty following or if it’s too long may not even read.” If there isn’t enough correct information, the judge is forced to adjourn the case to another day. Although there are six duty counsels working in the Oshawa court- house on family law cases, they aren’t able to do the preparation work for the cases. The service offered by the new centre includes a two-hour consultation with a lawyer before clients go to court, to help them get paperwork in order. For example, a parent asking for child support who has no idea what the other parent’s income is may simply leave the income line in the paperwork blank before going to see a judge. That’s too little infor- mation for a judge make a ruling. With help from the centre, the parent could either make a request based on the average income for the job of the other par- ent, which is information the centre would provide, or if the parent has no idea what the other parent does for a living, they would be advised to make an application based on minimum wage. “For the client it’s less stress, each court appearance adds more stress for the per- son, it doesn’t help the court, the courts are clogged right now,” said Mr. Tordoff. The client will get help in applying if they’re eligible for certificates to cover their costs or they may receive help in taking the case to mediation instead of the courts. “When you mediate it, you can end up with whatever’s best for your family and it might not be the standard the judge would have decided,” said Wendy Joy Bird, Legal Aid Ontario’s director general for the Dur- ham-Frontenac district. The Family Law Service Centre will be staffed by a lawyer, a legal assistant and there will be another legal assistant and duty counsel available at the courthouse. For more information or to make an appointment, call 905-576-2334 ext. 10. See editorial, page 6 Gross income cutoffs There are family gross income cutoff for the Family Law Service Centre. That was the question debated at Pickering City Hall this week, after residents complained that a van driven by Ward 3 Regional Councillor Peter Rodrigues may be breaking election campaign rules. In a letter to the City clerk, concerned resi- dents take issue with the councillor’s bright yellow van, which has his photo and coun- cillor website information splashed across the side. Also taking issue with the van is Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles, who is run- ning against Coun. Rodrigues in the Oct. 27 municipal election. “I’m trying to play according to the rules. If the other person isn’t playing by the rules and has a competitive advantage over me, it’s not fair,” said Coun. Pickles. The City of Pickering’s sign bylaw states that election signs cannot go up until 25 days before the election, which this year is Oct. 3. But, City Solicitor Paul Bigioni said in this case, the van is above board. “A vehicle could be an election sign, it all depends what is said on the wrap or graph- ic image,” he said. “In the situation at hand, we have decided it is not an election sign. There is nothing about ‘election’ or ‘re-elec- tion’ written there.” Coun. Rodrigues is frustrated by the alle- gation, calling it “baseless and groundless.” He took aim at Coun. Pickles, saying his opponent is raising “petty” issues to garner publicity. “The thing people in Pickering care about is property taxes, they don’t care about the vehicle,” he said. “(Coun. Pickles) is trying to change the channel from what he’s been doing on council. He’s just worried about his consistent views to raise property taxes.” The Municipal Elections Act does not regulate election signs -- that falls to local municipalities. Pickering’s bylaw defines an election sign as a sign “promoting” a candidate in an election campaign. The rules don’t apply to wall signs asso- ciated with a candidate’s campaign head- quarters, but the definition does apply to “election pens, buttons, hats, T-shirts, etc.” There is no specific mention of vehicles in the bylaw. It’s not the first time the issue has caused confusion in Durham. In 2010 concerns were raised in Oshawa when council candidate Shane Kelly -- who is also running this year -- drove a car with a window graphic reading “Shane Kelly for Oshawa city council.” The word “elect” was covered by masking tape. Mr. Kelly had sought a legal opinion before putting the graphic on his car and was told it didn’t breach the bylaw, as long as the word “elect” was covered. However, Oshawa City staff said at the time that signs on vehicles must follow the same rules as more conventional signs. Several other candidates are currently driving vehicles adorned with their names or photos, including Oshawa Mayor John Henry and Oshawa Regional councillors Tito-Dante Marimpietri and Amy England. Coun. Rodrigues is also facing scrutiny for choosing to host his recent campaign kick- off event on City property, at the Pickering Recreation Complex. However, he stressed that he “paid out of pocket” to rent space at the facility. City Clerk Debbie Shields says there is no bylaw that speaks to the use of City facili- ties for campaigns, but Pickering does have a “clerk’s procedure” that prohibits candi- dates from using a municipal facility for any election-related purpose. “The Clerk can create procedures for things that are not included or need further clarification within the Municipal Act but, unfortunately the Province gives us no pow- ers to actually enforce those procedures,” Ms. Shields said in an e-mail. She said this clerk’s procedure was creat- ed to level the playing field. “As a (election campaign) contribution may take the form of money, goods or ser- vices the City took the position of not allow- ing candidates to use facilities at all,” she added. Coun. Rodrigues said the fact that he paid to use the space means he didn’t take advantage of his political position, calling the concerns “much ado about nothing.” ENTER WIN for a chance to SONYRX100CAMERA ...thenheadoutandstartsnapping CultureinDurhamRegion!>>RETAIL VALUE: $700 Toenter,visitwww.durhamtourism.ca/culturedayscontest Municipal election Durham voters do their talking on camera DURHAM - The municipal election is less than two months away and we wanted to see what residents were thinking as they get ready to cast a vote for mayors, councillors and school board trustees on Oct. 27. Pickles has raised concerns about potential election violations. He has raised concerns about Coun. Durham man accused of driving his car into restaurant OSHAWA -- An Oshawa man is accused of deliberately driving his car into the post of a downtown Oshawa restaurant. Police say it happened on Sept. 6. at 136 Simcoe St. S. near the Simcoe and John streets intersection. A man got into an argu- ment with several customers inside the res- taurant and the argument continued into the parking lot behind the building. Police say the man threatened customers while hold- ing a screw driver before he got into a white Dodge Charger and deliberately drove the car into a wooden post that supported a bal- cony for the restaurant. When police arrived on scene, the man was still in his car and he was arrested at gunpoint. Matthew Hurren, 22, of Wesley Drive in Oshawa is charged with uttering threats, pos- sessing a dangerous weapon and dangerous driving. He was held for a bail hearing. The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation are proud owners of the Great Blue Heron Charity Casino. GBH is a successful gaming facility that serves our communities well. Our casino is a financial asset not only for Durham, but also for Ontario -- GBH is now the largest employer in north Durham Region and generates 1,100 well-paid jobs and a source of revenue for the province. Overall, GBH contributes more than $250 million annually to the regional econo- my. Unfortunately, the success of the GBH is threatened by potential new casino devel- opments as the Ontario government moves forward with a plan to “modernize” gaming. The cash-strapped provincial government has tasked the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation with finding opportunities to generate revenue. This puts GBH at risk. If gaming is expanded in Ajax or a new casino is approved and built in Pickering, then GBH stands to see a decrease in visi- tors and casino revenues that have bene- fited the people of Durham. In other words, more casinos will jeopardize GBH’s ability to remain a financial contributor to both the regional and provincial economy. I am deeply concerned about my com- munity’s future prosperity. We believe that local residents’ views on gaming must be taken into account by government. That is why we commissioned Abacus Data –- one of Canada’s most respected polling firms –- to find out what the residents of Ajax and Pickering think about the issue. Abacus Data conducted a telephone survey of 500 residents in Pickering and Ajax. The results are clear: new casino development and expansion are not wanted in the region. The question is, what will the Ontario government will do next on the gaming file? -- Kelly LaRocca is Chief of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation Kelly LaRocca Guest Column Gaming It’s not the Internet, it’s the people To the editor: Re: ‘Non-celebrities can be exploited by nude photo leaks, too’, Reka Szekely social media column, Sept. 4, 2014. Just what we need, more laws to regulate the content of what people place on the Internet, social media and e-mail. I am reluctant to say that if a person takes a nude, compromising or sexually explicit picture of themselves and places it on electronic pathways then they, and they alone, are responsible for the conse- quences. I am a ‘baby boomer’ and when I and my partner(s) got naked it was for each other’s pleasure, not the entire world in perpetu- ity. Had we posted any pictures of those adventures, all our children, grandchil- dren, friends, employers, neighbours and anyone else with Internet access could now enjoy them. We do not need more laws to regulate the Internet, we need a law to regulate people who have absolutely no common sense or intelligence. They alone should bear the burden of their actions, and not place the blame on others. Richard Carter Pickering Durham family law centre meets dire need It’s true that sometimes you have to spend a little to save a lot, even when it comes to family law in Durham Region. Legal Aid Ontario’s new legal centre offer- ing assistance to low-income residents to navigate the dense and complicated fam- ily court system will bring greater efficien- cy and a much higher level of preparation for local families struggling with domestic legal difficulties. The new centre will focus on such issues as marital separation, child custody agree- ments, child and spousal support, restrain- ing orders, domestic violence and change of support orders. And it’s not as if Legal Aid’s effort is a frill. Studies show that up to 70 per cent of Dur- ham residents are under-represented by a lawyer and are often woefully unprepared to participate in complicated family law cases during first appearances, a crucial step in the process. Provincially, the aver- age is about 65 per cent. In the simplest terms, notes Tom Tordoff, manager of the new Legal Aid centre, it slows the process. That means fewer cases are examined in a timely fashion, more appearances are required of average citi- zens, and more money is spent over the long term. The new centre is set up to limit those delays, increase efficiency, and compe- tently assist low-income families who would most benefit from simple, clear and expert advice about how to proceed. Eligibility is based solely on income, which ensures that residents most in need of legal advice and assistance will be able to more confidently navigate the system. Services offered by the new centre include a two-hour consultation with a lawyer to help clients prepare necessary documents and other paperwork. As well, clients can be offered advice on mediation to address mutual family issues that would avoid more formal court proceedings. This is an initiative that is laudable on many levels. It addresses backlogs in fam- ily law cases. It supports the needs of low- income families and individuals. It ren- ders timely and expert advice to residents at a vulnerable, stressful time in their lives. Finally, it levels the field for those with- out the financial means to take back some measure of control in their lives. Credit is due to Legal Aid Ontario for launching this new centre. The services it offers are clearly required, the people it hopes to assist will be better off for it, and experts in Ontario’s family law system will be more accessible to those most in need. For more information or to make an appointment, call 905-576-2334 ext. 10 A deep and abiding love like no other I was conversing, recently, with a dear friend of mine. He has no children and is of an age and station in life where the appearance of children, barring any Tony Randall miracles, is probably unlikely. I suppose I must have been talking about my own kids because that’s what I seem to do, you know, a lot, and he won- dered out loud to me what the rest of his life would look like without kids in the picture. I remember mouthing some plat- itudes about him being such a terrific guy that he would always have nieces, neph- ews and cousins around if he ever need- ed a little-person hit. And I meant what I said. He really is a wonderful individual and has a beautifully natural rapport with kids. My own two boys think the world of him. But even as I spoke, I confess to feel- ing a little sad about his situation. I know there are many wonderful peo- ple who lead wonderful, complete and satisfying lives without children in the program. I, however, am not one of them. Rightly or wrongly my children have always been, and continue to be, every- thing to me. I don’t think I’ve ever loved or ever will love anything as much I love the two of them. Love for a child is something that exists in your very DNA. It sparks from the first life-altering moment you lock eyes with the little person you’ve created and it kindles until the day you die. It’s a fierce, consuming kind of love. And it burns you. It burns you to tears again and again and again. And not just when they are little and vulnerable and so much in need of our love and protection. But all throughout their marvelous lives. Ask any one of the millions of red-eyed parents who said goodbye to their col- lege-bound children this past week. Ask a new grandparent. Ask my own mother and father who, even though painfully estranged from two of their grown children, still harbour a love for those lost boys that is monumen- tal. Everyone should love this deeply, this ferociously. I may be wrong but I am not certain that a love like that exists in a life without children. One may deeply love a partner or spouse, one may love and cherish a friend and one may love a pet. I have experi- enced all of these loves and understand their abiding power and importance but I did not conceive my spouse, friend or pet. I am not responsible for them being here and, outside of feeding my dog and teaching him to heel, sit and stay, I do not carry their well-being and development on my shoulders. Neither have any of them entrusted such to me. With children it is different. It is a love that is beholden, a caring that lasts a lifetime, a concern that never ends. When my friend posed that question regarding his future, I silently contem- plated my own life sans offspring. I tried to picture an existence devoid of everything my two beautiful children have given me and the short answer is; I couldn’t. -- Durham resident Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column. 10 Iconic Video Game Characters Enter Laughing Neil Crone Actor, comic, writer Let’s Talk Weigh in on topics of the day www.facebook.com/newsdurham Poll The issue of banned foods at elementary schools in Ontario was the focus of a long Face- book conversation last week (see poll at left), with views on both sides of the issue. Here’s a sample of what people were saying: A Hamilton school has banned milk, eggs and pudding cups after an allergy com- plaint. Your thoughts? du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 1 0 , 2 0 1 4 9 AP Chris Vale: My 6 year old has a severe egg allergy but I wouldn’t go so far as to ban them outright from school. Kids are smart enough to know what they can and cannot eat. Eventually, it gets to the point where of what can you send your child to school with. Say someone may have an allergy to bread, what are you going to say, sorry you can’t bring sandwiches to school then?? Kids do have to eat. BEHIND THE LENS PORT PERRY -- When the Provincial ladies softball champi- onships were held in early August at Fowler Park there was plenty of opportunities for action photos of players sliding into snag a base. Sometimes it’s not the dust and close calls but the smiles on the faces of players who played the game well that makes the photo. And the sidelong glance of the opposition team player in the background just adds to the image. CELIA KLEMENZ / METROLAND Eat those foods at home 3% Oh, come on! 84% If it saves a life, OK13% 10. Super Mario Source: http://www.therichest.com Connie Coll: If schools are going to continue to ban foods, it is time they took responsibility for feeding stu- dents while at school. That way they can assume responsibility and accountability for the safety of all students. It is easy to set rules that you don’t have to do the work to implement. Debbie Hannah: Pretty soon the children will have nothing they can take for lunch. Although I do under- stand, maybe the schools should find alternative eating rooms for lunch for those who have these allergies. Carole Thajer: I’d like to know why no one in any of my classes from kindergarten to grade 12, ever had an allergy. No one had a reaction to any food. No one had an asthmatic attack come to think of it. I’m 56 by be way. Do the math. Kelly O’Sullivan: There seems to be many “theories” about why the increase and prevalence in food aller- gies, as well as the question of geog- raphy (North America seems to have more food allergies) however, one theory is that 56 years ago children were more likely to die from having such an allergy. Therefore the problem wasn’t as visible. However, I do agree that more research is needed to identify WHY there are more food allergies today. Robyn Connolly: It’s understand- able why they are not allowing these foods but it is making it extremely hard for kids to bring food to school. Maybe the school can start some sort of lunch program that is free of all these allergens to make lunches a bit less complicated? I would rather pay for that then try to figure out what I can and can’t send, and still give variety to my children. Katherine Verhage: When you have very picky children and a low budget, it makes it difficult to provide healthy lunches ... As a parent with a severe peanut allergy, I do understand the severity of the matter... But it makes it extremely difficult to also ban the alternatives! du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 1 0 , 2 0 1 4 10 P The developer is looking to re-zone three pieces of land near Bayly and Church streets to pave the way for a $1.6-billion project dubbed Durham Live. Since there is no zoning category that allows for all the proposed uses, the plan is to create a site-specific category called “major tourist destination.” If approved, the new category would include a list of about 40 permitted uses including hotels, offices, a water park, film studio and -- most controversially -- a casi- no. Despite the developer’s insistence that a casino is only part of the proposal, debate about a gaming facility has dominated the Durham Live discussion. More than 100 people came out to the Sept. 2 planning and development commit- tee meeting for a marathon discussion that was finally forced to wrap up at 1 a.m. when council hit its curfew. “It was ridiculous,” said resident Bev Coats, who attended both meetings, and was shocked at how long they dragged on. “(The councillors) are pretty much holding you hostage while they say all the things they want to say.” Resident Kasim Seif said he had to work at 7 a.m. the morning after the Sept. 2 meeting, but stayed until 1 a.m. in hopes that a deci- sion would be made. “To go home after all that time without even a vote ... it’s very frustrating,” he said. Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles accused the three regional councillors of try- ing to “run out the clock” to delay a decision. “It appeared that (the regional councillors) were trying to drive this $1.5-billion invest- ment and the potential 15,000 jobs and year- ly $50-million revenue out of Pickering,” he said. Regional Councillor Peter Rodrigues, who chaired the meeting both nights, said letting people talk is part of the democratic process. “People are trying to express themselves ... it’s not grandstanding. People should have the opportunity to say what they want, that’s the democratic pro- cess.” Mayor Ryan didn’t see it that way. He said it was “bla- tant” that ques- tions from coun- cil to the delegations “became more of a cross examination to allow a council- lor to put forward their argument, as opposed to seeking clarification.” The mayor said the seven registered del- egations on the list for the Sept. 2 meeting should have taken 70 minutes -- about 10 minutes each -- as opposed to more than three hours. City Hall was crowded once again when the debate resumed on Sept. 8. Several residents spoke up for and against the project. Barbara Pulst asked for more studies, not- ing there is no information on the impact the Durham Live development would have on police services and social services. She also expressed concern that council and committee will be voting on the re-zon- ing application before voters have their say with an Oct. 27 ballot question on a casino. “This referendum and our vote as citizens and residents of Pickering means nothing,” she noted. Resident Susan Elbertsen told committee she has lived in Pickering since 1977 and has seen change -- but not enough. “I would like to see a little more progress in the city of Pickering,” she said, noting that her son recently left the prov- ince to find work, and saying the Dur- ham Live develop- ment could create much-needed local jobs. Politicians also had plenty to say. Regional Councillor Bill McLean ques- tioned why the debate was being “run through” at the last council meeting of the term. “Why not put this forward until after elec- tion?” he asked. Tom Melymuk, Pickering’s director of city development, said staff has an “obliga- tion” to bring planning applications forward when they are ready. Regional Councillor Jennifer O’Connell called for studies on how a casino might impact rates of crime and homelessness. She takes issue with a section of the City report that says the “social impacts of a gaming facility are the responsi- bility of the provincial government.” “It’s not only a provincial issue because we are going to have to live with it and deal with it every day,” she said. “Housing is just one example of where it’s not a provincial responsibility, it’s a municipal responsibility ... and we have no data on that.” Dayna Gilbert, an urban planner speak- ing on behalf of the developer, repeatedly reminded council members that they were debating a planning application, not the merits of a casino. “Nothing tonight makes an ultimate deci- sion on a casino, it’s just one permitted use,” she said, adding that Durham Live would go ahead with or without a gaming facility -- just at a different size and density. Ms. Gilbert said the time to discuss detailed uses would be later in the process, when a site plan comes forward, along with more documentation and studies. The City report says the application repre- sents good planning and that Durham Live could provide “significant positive financial and economic benefits to the City in terms of jobs, tax assessment and other potential rev- enues to the City.” An economic impact assessment submit- ted by the developer estimates the project could create 7,500 to 12,000 direct jobs and generate annual municipal taxes of about $50 million. Council will vote on the Durham Live issue on Sept. 15, its last scheduled meeting of this term. PICKERING from page 1 Pickering residents unhappy with ‘frustrating’ process Durham police write 1,267 tickets in school traffic blitz DURHAM -- A four-day traffic safety blitz around schools in Durham Region result- ed in more than 1,200 tickets issued, including one for a motorist clocked doing 110 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Oshawa. The Durham Regional Police traf- fic services branch, along with officers from all divi- sions, took a zero-tolerance approach in school and community safety zones during the week of Sept. 2 to 5. Officers wrote 1,267 tickets during the blitz, with 787 for speeding and 76 for dis- tracted driving. The number of tickets is down from the 2,070 tickets issued during the blitz last year, which included 1,502 tickets for speeding and 50 for distracted driv- ing. ‘‘Nothing tonight makes an ultimate decision on a casino, it’s just one permitted use.’ Dayna Gilbert, urban planner representing Durham Live Reeling them into the Pickering farmers’ market PICKERING -- Hayden Codner, 9, pulled a fish from the pond during the Pickering Town Centre’s recent Farmer’s Market end of summer festival. Highlights included a petting zoo, carnival games, face painting, live music and a collection for the local food bank. Home Price Growth Continued in August DURHAM REGION, September 4, 2014 - Durham Region Association of REALTORS® (DRAR) President Jane Hurst reported 919 sales in August 2014, down 3.8 per cent compared to 955 sales in August 2013. “However, year-to-date, Durham Region has seen 7,704 sales, up 3.7 per cent compared to 7,430 over the same period last year” explained Hurst. The average price of resale homes in Durham Region in the month of August was $388,690. “August’s average price is 7.7 per cent higher than August of last year” stated Hurst. The number of new listings that entered the market in August was 1,209, down 9.4 per cent from 1,323 in August 2013. “This is very much a seller’s market as listings have decreased and prices have increased over the past year” explained Hurst. “So far this year, we have seen prices grow, sales remain steady and listings decrease in comparison to last year” stated Hurst. “If this trend continues, we could remain in a seller’s market for the rest of 2014.” Durham REALTORS®, We Work Where You Live. Although the small claims suit launched by Whitby resident Russell Brown sought compensation for a water filtration sys- tem, the issue he hoped to address was larger. Mr. Brown claimed fluoride, which is added to drinking water to fight tooth decay, is a toxic substance that threatens human health. That assertion is rejected by Brian Con- vey, manager of Durham Region’s oral health division. “It’s effective, it’s safe, and it’s afford- able,” Mr. Convey said of fluoride, a min- eral that is often found in natural water supplies. He said the issue -- moves to ban fluo- ride have gained traction throughout North America -- is often fuelled by mis- information. “It’s one of the most studied things in the last 20 years,” said Mr. Convey. “Com- munity water fluoridation is safe.” Mr. Brown sued the Region for $900, the cost of a filtration system he said he installed to remove fluoride from the tap water in his home. A trial began in Janu- ary, then was adjourned to Aug. 29. Back in January Mr. Brown admitted his claim was largely symbolic -- his real goal, he said, was to coax the Region to revisit the issue of fluoridation. He was support- ed by members of Free Durham From Flu- oride and called as an expert witness Dr. Paul Connett, who co-authored a book on the issue. Dr. Connett characterized the Region’s use of fluoride as “reckless”, testifying the substance has been shown to lower IQ in children and, when ingested in excess, can damage teeth and bones. The Region replied that Durham’s drink- ing water is safe, and that fluoridation is an effective means of fighting tooth decay, particularly among children. Mr. Brown failed to prove he’d sustained any injuries as a result of fluoridation, Region lawyer R. Arti Sanichara said. “Neither Mr. Brown nor Dr. Connett had any basis for their allegations,” Ms. Sani- chara said. “In fact, they had not even tested the water provided by the Region. On the other hand, the Region of Durham continuously tests its water to ensure that it meets all legislated standards.” On Aug. 29 Deputy Judge W. Mark Burch dismissed Mr. Brown’s claim. The Region did not seek an order for costs of defend- ing against the suit. Durham Region is not the only munic- ipality in which fluoridation is an issue. A recent canada.com report noted that since 2005, 30 communities across the country -- including Calgary, Windsor, Orillia and Niagara Region -- have voted against fluoridation. In Durham, the issue was decided years ago by community plebiscites. As of now fluoridation occurs in municipal water systems in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Brooklin and Courtice. Mr. Convey encouraged anyone with concerns about fluoride to conduct thor- ough research, including contacting local health officials. “We can steer them in the right direc- tion for looking at reputable literature,” he said. Mr. Brown did not respond to a request for comment. Lawsuit targeting fluoride in Durham water fails DURHAM -- Whitby resident Russell Brown took Durham Region to small claims court, seeking to have the municipality pay for a filtration system he used to remove fluoride from his water. The father of two claims fluoride is a toxic substance. Back in June 2013 when Brandon ‘Bad Boy’ Cook knocked out Fitz Vanderpool in the first round of their Canadian light mid- dleweight (154 pound) title fight, euphoria erupted inside the ring at the Hershey Cen- tre in Mississauga and carried back into the dressing room area. Saturday night, same venue and same result, a first-round knockout of Argentina’s Cristian Serrano, yet the Ajax resident was almost apologetic afterward. “All this hard work for three minutes,” said the 28 year old post-fight. “All I can think of is all the times getting up in the morning. All the times training two or three times a day. All the hard work with my team. These guys did so much for me to get me where I am, for three minutes? “All the people who came, over 500 people who came to watch me fight for three min- utes? I don’t know. It kind of sucks, but it’s good that I didn’t get hurt or anything and I can fight again right away, hopefully.” Cook delivered a right hand that land- ed squarely on the chin of Serrano. After a slight delay, he crumbled to the mat, flat on his back. The referee started a count, but stopped it before reaching 10, waving off the fight. Serrano managed to struggle to get to his feet and protested the stoppage, but had already been out long enough. The official time was 2:34 in the first of a scheduled 10-round light middleweight non-title fight. There was very little celebration in the ring after, Cook shaking his head in frustration at the short night of work. “I was frustrated because it didn’t even feel like I hit him hard,” said the Ajax Boxing Club member. “I have to see the tape. Every- one is telling me it was a good left hook, right hand. It felt like I was just trying to figure him out. Take my time and he just folded. “I saw his eyes roll into the back of his head and I knew as soon as I hit him again he was done.” While the Hershey Centre had its usual large crowd for the seven-fight card, Cook personally sold 500 tickets to family and friends for his main event as his following continues to grow. The win improved him to a perfect 14-0-0 with eight knockouts since turning pro in 2011. Mike Guyett, Cook’s trainer, likes the way his fighter continues to improve with each outing. “Believe it or not in only that short amount of time I can take a lot away from it,” he said of Saturday’s brief appearance. “There’s things that he did that I’m happy with. There’s also things he didn’t do that I wanted him to do.” The fight ended a four-month layoff for Cook, who said he wants to be more active going forward. While nothing is definite, he is eyeing a fight in Gatineau, Quebec in October. He also noted that discussions are under- way to hold a fight card in his hometown of Ajax sometime in 2015. MISSISSAUGA -- Ajax’s Brandon ‘Bad Boy’ Cook raised his record to 14-0 with eight KOs after a first-round knockout of Argentina’s Cristian Serrano on Saturday night at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. The main event lasted just 2:34. Ron Pietroniro / Metroland Pickering’s Hayley Henderson finding the back of the net CALIFORNIA, PENNSYLVANIA -- Hayley Henderson isn’t going to go quietly in her senior year of soccer for the California Uni- versity of Pennsylvania Vulcans. The Pickering resident recorded two goals as the No. 12 Vulcans opened the season with a 5-2 victory against Ship- pensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play. Henderson scored her first goal of the season in the 55th minute, scoring her second marker just six minutes later. In the home opener, Henderson scored once in a 3-1 win over Millersville, improving the Vulcans to 2-0. Henderson notched her third goal of the season in the final minute of the game. In 64 career games, Henderson, a Dunbarton graduate, has scored 24 goals and added six assists. Eleven of her goals have been game winners. Mercedes-Benz Durham 250 Thickson Rd. Stephen John Turner May 29, 1963 - September 9, 2013 On the Anniversary of the day you went away. Today's the anniversary of the day that we lost you, and for a while it felt as though our lives had ended too. But loss has taught us many things and now we face each day, with hope and happy memories to help us on our way. And though we're full of sadness that you're no longer here, your influence still guides us and we still feel you near. What we shared will never die, it lives within our hearts, bringing strength and comfort, while we are apart. RIP Dad, we miss you every single day, and we will love you forever, Love Emma & Peter Stephen John Turner May 29, 1963 - September 9, 2013 Steve, I can't believe it's been a year since we lost you. On September 9th I will honour you by taking the path that you took a year ago, until I come to the place where you took your last breath. That place is a place of comfort for me now. It is beautiful and peaceful and I feel your presence there, in the breeze blowing through the tree tops. I wish I had been with you, on that path a year ago, holding your hand. Maybe we would have stopped at that place and taken in it's beauty, but then we would have carried on walking, hand in hand and you would still be here today. I love you, I miss you, Anthea RIVNIE, David Paul - Passed away in his home on July 31, 2014 at the age of 48. Pick-up from schools in Pickering & Ajax! As the school season starts up, many parents will be looking for childcare or afterschool activities their child can participate in. Durham Taekwondo/Karate Martial Arts in Pickering offers an aesthetically pleasing and safe environment for children of all ages. The 5000 sq. ft. facility has 3 full-size rinks, a separate afterschool area and entrance, and a main entrance with a spacious glass viewing area where parents are encouraged to watch classes without interrupting students. Durham Taekwondo/Karate Martial Arts guarantees a safe, fun and exciting environment while students develop the self-confidence they need to succeed. Many parents say that after their child has taken classes with Durham Taekwondo their child has shown increased self-confidence, motivation and a desire to excel. The Kick Smart™ Transported After School Program for ages 4 to 13 years old is a constructive alternative to daycare. Your child is picked up at their school and taken to Durham Taekwondo for one low price, making it easy to eliminate childcare costs. The program has been created to enhance the overall development of your child by giving them the tools to succeed as future leaders in their schools and communities. This is accomplished through the combination of certified teachers and martial artists. The Kick Smart™ program provides assistance with schoolwork and is structured so that students develop the habit of completing homework daily as well as participating in regular exercise through a martial arts curriculum. There is an anti-bullying curriculum which is taught in both the after-school and regular programs. The Kick Smart™ After School Program is very flexible when it comes to the convenience of picking up your child. You can pick them up after work any time between 5:15 to 6:15pm. Taekwondo teaches students many different mental attributes. These attributes include but are not limited to; self-discipline, self-control, confidence, and a stress-free mind. Some of the physical traits your child will develop are; speed, balance, agility and strength. For families that do not require afterschool care, Durham Taekwondo offers evening and weekend classes for anyone over the age of 3. The program curriculum is designed specifically for each age group; Little Dragons are 4 to 6 years old, Kid’s Club is for 7 to 12 year olds and there are programs for teens and adults. The Black Belt Club is offered for those who have a competitive edge and are interested in tournament training. Later this year the Parent and Tot Baby Dragon classes will be added for 2 and 3 year olds. Durham Taekwondo/Karate Martial Arts is a member of the Ontario Taekwondo Association and Taekwondo Canada. Their classes differ from other Taekwondo classes as they are taught by renowned instructors who are internationally recognized for their contributions to the sport of Taekwondo.
