The construction of a 9,000-square-metre air support structure with first- class FIFA 1 star turf and a synthetic running track with an approximately 700-square-metre clubhouse will enable Pickering soccer players to play and train during the off-season. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland New Pickering soccer dome balloons to life Facility on track to open in September Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Pickering’s new soccer dome is taking shape. The air support dome was slow- ly inflated on Aug. 20, marking a major construction milestone for the much-anticipated project. The complex process involved rolling out thousands of feet of fabric, then using several forklifts and a 40-person crew to inflate the dome over the course of two hours. Plans to inflate it earlier in August hit some snags due to weather. But the Oshawa woman says it just wasn’t working for her. “I didn’t want to have a priest intercede for me. I wanted to be able to worship when I want to and where I want to,” she says. It’s now been more than 20 years since Ms. Walker was introduced to Wicca, and she’s never looked back. “This makes more sense to me. It’s a very peaceful and positive religion.” On Aug. 24 she was among a small group gathered for the 11th annual Durham Pagan Pride Day at Rotary Centennial Park in Whitby. This year’s event featured a children’s cir- cle, a workshop on the relationship between food and spirituality, a ritual for the Earth Mother and a roundtable discussion on the future of Durham’s pagan community. “With this event we’re taking paganism back to its roots. It’s a very low-key atmo- sphere,” said event organizer Nathan Malik, as participants chatted under the shade of leafy trees and tried their hand at hula- hooping. Paganism is an umbrella term that refers to a group of indigenous and ancient poly- theistic religions. It includes Wiccans, Druids, Khemetics, Asatru and Goddess worshippers. The local event is one of dozens of Pagan Pride Project celebrations that take place around the world. Mr. Malik says the aim of Durham’s Pagan Pride Day is twofold -- to provide local pagans with a chance to meet and learn from each other -- and to educate the public and tackle misconceptions. “There is some discrimination. There are people who think we worship Satan or do sacrifices, things like that,” says Mr. Malik, sounding both amused and exasperated. “We’re just normal people who have chosen this spiritual path.” Ajax resident Kim Coley has been involved with Durham Pagan Pride Day since it start- ed in 2004 and says she loves that it allows the public to meet pagans and ask ques- tions. “People are very curious about what pagans do. But how do you find out? This is a way to talk to us that isn’t intimidating,” says Ms. Coley, who is a member of Dancing Lights Grove, a local Druid congregation. The event drew many interested glanc- es from those enjoying Rotary Centennial Park on Aug. 24, and some people did stop to peruse the information table or chat with participants. Whitby resident Anne Hodgins paused during a walk with her dog to read a bro- chure: “Paganism: A Brief Introduction”, and says she was surprised by what she learned. “I didn’t really know what it was before. I had heard of Wicca, but I didn’t know paganism was all these things,” she said. “It’s interesting. It’s good to understand what other religions are all about.” In addition to the Durham Pagan Pride Day event, the Durham Pagans group hosts regular coffee and pub gatherings, religious rituals and an annual Samhain Dance. Police were called to a home in the Finch Avenue and Liverpool Road area of Pickering in response to reports of a 59-year-old man yelling and threatening to hurt himself and others outside his home. Officers from the West Division and the Tactical Support Unit responded and found the man standing in the doorway of his garage with a 12-inch knife and a large wood- en club. After police spoke with him for several minutes, he even- tually dropped the weapons and began walking towards his house. For those of you unfamiliar, there has been a sensation that has been going viral on the interweb that involves dousing your- self with water. The stunt goes like this: peo- ple make a video of themselves dumping a bucket of ice water on their heads, post it on social media, and then challenge friends to do the same within 24 hours or donate $100 to ALS research. Many do both. Some have criticized the campaign as a type of charitable giving referred to as “slacktivism”. This is best defined as when people will click and post online for social causes with little actual (or any) knowledge of the cause. I have spent half a decade volunteering for a charity that is close to my heart (the Durham Children’s Aid Foundation) and know too well how difficult it is to get people to donate money to a worthy cause. There is tough competition for fundraising dollars. Despite how you may feel personally about this type of “stunt fundraising”, it’s dif- ficult to argue that millions of dollars have been raised for a worthy cause. I’ve used it as an opportunity to teach my kids that everyone gives in a way which they are comfortable. So, after we watched people dump water over their heads, I explained to them what the disease was and told them about a high school friend, Bruce, who ultimately lost his life to ALS. I placed the emphasis on personal connections and empathy and less on making sure that our Facebook friends were seeing just how “crazy” we were being for getting wet. “I wish your friend was around to see this,” one of my kids said to me afterwards. I know that long after others might have moved on to the next, coolest thing, that’s what I will remember the most. And it’s all because of a bucket of water. -- A. Laura Francis is a writer living in Prince Albert. She urges everyone to get out there and support their favorite charitable cause. Good grief, are we living in the old Soviet Union? The opportunities for revenge or the exercise of sheer malice are obvious, and if the police decide to make someone’s life a living hell, this can be the way to do it. Remember, Canada is the country in which bureaucrats can seize wages and bank accounts to pay income tax bills just by signing a form -- no reference to the courts is required. They can just grab your assets, including the fruits of your labour, with the stroke of a pen. And thanks to Pierre Elliot Trudeau, our “constitution” does not include the right to own property. In my opinion, Canada is surely but slowly on the way towards becoming a totalitarian state, and the sooner people wake up and pay attention the better.Jeff Goodall Elliott’s appeal broad, and growing A ‘formidable’ opponent. A ‘centrist candidate’ who can ‘appeal to a broader spectrum.’ Such are the words used by Forum Research president Lorne Bozinoff to describe Whitby-Oshawa MPP Christine Elliott following the results of a poll last week that showed the local MPP as the clear frontrunner in the race to replace outgoing Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak. Ms. Elliott is already well respected as a hard-working MPP in the riding, and enjoys a high level of abiding support from fellow Conservatives provincially and federally. She was the first to declare her intentions to replace Mr. Hudak, who stepped down after the party’s crushing defeat in June’s provin- cial election, which saw Kathleen Wynne’s beleaguered Liberals win a majority. Ms. Elliott brings a fresh perspective that has long been missing from the Progres- sive Conservative playbook which, under Mr. Hudak, embraced far right policies that got no traction among voters. He doubled down on a plan to cut 100,000 public sec- tor jobs in the spring election campaign, used fuzzy math to project the creation of one million private sector jobs, and alienat- ed the vast majority of voters who live in the middle of the political spectrum. It is here where Ms. Elliott can work to revive Conservative fortunes in Ontario. Should she be able to bring a Conserva- tive-rooted focus to fiscal oversight without alienating voters with soft support for the Liberals as Mr. Hudak did so effectively this past spring, Ontario will once again be led by a PC government. And she has plenty of time to tour the province, build alliances and voter support, sell the new vision she has for the PCs in Ontario and prepare for the next provincial election. The Forum Research poll indicates that Ms. Elliott is the clear frontrunner in seek- ing the provincial PC party’s leadership, a full four points ahead of federal Tory Lisa Raitt, and five percentage points higher than fellow Ontario MPPs Patrick Brown and Vic Fedeli. We encourage Ms. Elliott to keep building consensus and connections among Ontari- ans. We call for renewed policies that appeal to more voters, and for leadership that invites more people into the tent. If nothing else, Mr. Hudak’s failures, and his embrace of divisive, unappealing poli- cies showed that Ontarians have moved on from the Mike Harris era and the Common Sense Revolution. Ms. Elliott seems keenly perceptive of that notion and must present a credible, compassionate alternative if the PCs are to lead Ontario once again. Is there a reason it’s called ‘men’opause? There are a great many crosses that men must bear in this life. We are very often called upon to lift heavy things, to nail piec- es of wood together and to enter into ardu- ous, chest-thumping deliberations with bankers, tradespeople and car salesmen. Sometimes we even have to pick out ties by ourselves and make our own breakfast. It’s not easy being a man. But our lot is a cake-walk compared to that of the female persuasion. Anyone who tells you differently is either a liar, an idiot or like- ly both. Men may roll their eyes at what we deem erratic or incomprehensibly emotional behaviour from the women in our lives, we may smugly chuckle and chide females for taking different and, by that very defini- tion, wrong approaches to decision-making, child-rearing and financial matters -- but at our secret meetings men can be seen fall- ing to their sawdust covered, grass-stained knees and thanking God for giving them the easy ride, for making them male. We know that, by the slimmest margin of a Y Chro- mosome, we have dodged a huge, womb- cramping, baby-delivering, menopausal bullet. And let me tell you, that last little item is a real doozy. I live with a woman who is cur- rently enjoying the many and varied gifts of menopause and I will state unequivocal- ly that if women faced no other challeng- es than this Machiavellian nightmare, the scales of injustice would still tip firmly into the female camp. Nothing men experience can hold a candle to this rollercoaster of hormone hysteria. Although I will say, to be fair, that living with someone who is going through this is no Sunday picnic either. It’s not physically difficult, mind you, one just needs to be constantly on one’s guard. It’s more accurately like living with several dif- ferent people, but you never know who is going to show up until it’s too late. What are you supposed to think, for instance, when you look across the break- fast table and smile warmly at the woman you love, only to have her instantly burst into tears? How do you explain to other motor- ists, the lunatic ripping her clothes off beside you and jamming her perspiring face into the air conditioning vents? How many times can you gently remind her that the glasses she is so frantically searching for are on her head? And how many times can you dis- guise cellular male delight when she anx- iously decries her ever-increasing bust line? It’s tricky as hell for us, but for them it’s just plain hell. I have no idea why menopause exists. I’m not certain anyone does. I’ve wracked my simple male brain and for the life of me I cannot come up with one rational, evolu- tionary reason why, as they enter middle- age, God should want to turn women into men. It has all the makings of a very black cosmic joke. But trust me, no woman who is suddenly sporting the moustache of a Greek fisherman finds it remotely funny. I remember, years ago, hearing of some- thing called the ‘Essentially Female Hypoth- esis’ which stated that we are all essen- tially conceived as females. An early fetus has what are, for all intents and purposes, female reproductive organs and genitals. It is only through the later introduction of tes- tosterone or estrogen that the baby forms into a male or stays female. So, could it be that menopause is nothing more than the Universe’s way of evening out the scales? If we all start as females we should all finish up as males? Yikes. That’s enough to give any- body the sweats. -- Durham resident Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column. 10 School Songs That Rock Enter Laughing Neil Crone Actor, comic, writer Let’s Talk Weigh in with readers on topics of the day www.facebook.com/ newsdurham Poll We asked our friends on Facebook to sound off last week about the things that are bothering them in our occasional request for a RANT!. There is no turn signal for a u turn for Shelley Skinkle-Auger: How about all the GO communters who think that making the left out of the park- ing lot on Victoria is a good idea. They enjoy blocking traffic on Victoria headed West. 10. Rock ‘n Roll High School, The Ramones 9. School, Nirvana 8. Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard, Paul Simon 7. Jeremy, Pearl Jam 6. For example, the dome can’t be inflated if it’s raining, or if it has recently rained, because rolling out the fabric on wet gravel could cause it to rip. Wind speeds of more than 10 km/h are also a no-go. “The weather has played havoc with it, but that’s a Canadian summer, it’s to be expected,” Ms. Carpino says. The $8.7-million project at 1975 Cle- ments Rd. is a partnership between the City of Pickering and the Pickering Soc- cer Club. It will be owned by the City and man- aged by the Pickering Soccer Club, which is responsible for $4.5 million of the total cost, paying it to the City over the next 15 years. The facility will include a full-size soc- cer pitch -- which can be split into quar- ters for different activities -- as well a synthetic running track, change rooms, meeting rooms and administration facili- ties for the soccer club. Ms. Carpino says an indoor soccer centre was identified as an “immediate need” by the City. “Now the club can grow the sport dur- ing the indoor season, which is very important,” she notes. The indoor league, which currently has just under 700 players, will be able to expand to 3,500. In addition to soccer, the facility will accommodate other sports such as football, track, lawn bowling and ulti- mate Frisbee. “We can all recognize the potential of a facility such as this,” said Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan during the 2013 groundbreaking for the project. “This future facility acts not just as a soc- cer facility. It creates opportunities for the development of athletes, coaches, sport and recreation; and for wonderful childhood memories, life-long friend- ships, and the establishment of a healthy lifestyle for Pickering residents.” The soccer dome is Pickering’s first new municipal facility in 13 years. It is expected to open at the end of September, in time for the fall soccer season. Soccer dome fast facts • The dome measures 407 feet by 240 feet (124 by 73 metres), which totals approxi- mately 100,000 square feet, or 9,140 square metres • The highest point of the dome is 75 feet (23 metres) above the playing surface, which is almost seven storeys high • The insulated dome will maintain internal temperatures of 18 C • The dome is equipped with wind and snow sensors. In high winds, pressure will auto- matically increase for stabilization. Dur- ing snow accumulation, sensors will adjust dome pressure and internal temperatures to allow snow to shed from the fabric • The dome automatically switches to a natu- ral gas backup inflation pump during power outages PICKERING -- The Pickering Soccer Centre on Clements Road will also accommodate other sports activities such as football, track and ultimate frisbee. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland Pickering soccer players can train all year under the dome PICKERING from page 1 “It’s important that people understand what a terrible disease this is,” he said. ALS, which stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is commonly known as Lou Geh- rig’s Disease. The fatal neuromuscular dis- ease causes the body’s muscles to waste away, robbing people of their ability to move, speak, swallow and eventually breathe. Eighty per cent of people with ALS die within two to five years of diagnosis. There is no cure or effec- tive treatment. ALS Canada says about 2,500 to 3,000 Canadians are currently living with the disease. The Ice Bucket Challenge has taken social media by storm in recent weeks. Participants are challenged to dump a bucket of freez- ing ice water on themselves and then nomi- nate several others to do the challenge, and/ or make a donation. As of Saturday the cam- paign had raised more than $3 million for ALS Canada and more $62.5 million for the ALS Association in the United States. In addition to being iced, Mayor Ryan said he is making a donation to the cause, and he is urging everyone in the community to do the same. To learn more about ALS or make a dona- tion, visit www.als.ca. CITY’S from page 1 PICKERING -- Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS. While we contemplate the day ahead of us, how many stop and wonder where all that food comes from and who the many people are who make agriculture their way of life? They are people like Jordan McKay at Willowtree Farm in Scugog. Jordan rises before dawn on market days to deliver fresh produce to one of 14 farmers’ mar- kets in Durham, York, Toronto and cot- tage country. Meet Ken Lamb at Maplewinds Farm who you might find tending to a ewe and her newborn lambs. Ask any farmer what their day is like and you will soon learn it’s a sun-up- to-sun-down occupation full of physi- cal labour, considerable financial invest- ment and not just a little bit of wide-eyed wonder. Our team of photographers and report- ers fanned out across Durham Region July 22, 2014 to document 24 hours in the world of farm life. Photographer Celia Klemenz witnessed a bit of the wide-eyed wonder when she caught up with veterinarian Dr. Rachel Busato who was, shall we say, up to her elbows in her work. Flip to page 41 of the book to see what she was doing. At the Werry farm in Oshawa life is not as it was in 1928. Urban sprawl reach- es her spindly fingers out to the farm as trucks whiz by announcing progress at the door. With Hwy. 407 pushing its way through Durham, the farm is in the way. But the Werry’s have not given up on farming. After years of planning the Werry farm, Loa-de-Mede, is on the move to a new location. Jeff Mitchell spent the day on the farm and discovered bustling busi- ness. Many thanks to everyone who welcomed our journalists with enthusi- asm on July 22 and made this, our fourth annual Night and Day publication, a reality. But remember, a truly comfortable and functional home that reflects your personal style will develop over time. Hoffman offers these tips to help first-time homeowners to furnish and style their new abode: 1. Resist the temptation to immediately purchase new furnishings. Organize and move in with what you have, placing furniture in rooms and finding places for items that go in closets, cupboards and drawers. 2. Measure and make a plan for each room on paper. Explore options on graph paper and consider using masking tape to mark out dimensions on the floor or walls of any furnishing you might purchase. This will ensure the pieces will work within your available space. 3. Consider unwanted elements. Home ownership affords you the luxury of making choices. If you don’t like a lighting fixture or the wallpaper border in the kitchen, you are at liberty to replace it. 4. Consider any changes you would like to make to flooring. Carpeting from the previous owners may be crying out for replacement. Research and price out replacement options with consideration to available products, the temperature underfoot, and any need for noise reduction. 5. Create a budget. Apply a realistic price tag to your wish list and establish a time-frame to achieve your goals. Do things one step at a time and keep a tally against your budget as you go. Soon enough, your first home will reflect your style and dovetail with your lifestyle. Pickering’s Brayden Schnur a tennis star on the rise Nineteen year old reached main draw of Rogers Cup in Toronto Tova Friedman newsroom@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- When you have the oppor- tunity to make your long-lasting dreams a reality, you cannot let it pass you by. Pickering tennis player Brayden Schnur, 19, did exactly that as he confidently breezed through the qualifying rounds of the Rogers Cup this year, defeating two higher ranked players: Australia’s Matthew Edban 7-5, 6-2 and Japan’s Yuichi Sugita 6-3, 6-1. “That Sunday night felt amazing, but I knew I had to refocus and set my sights on the next match ahead,” said Schnur. Unfortunately, Schnur’s winning streak came to an end when he played his first round of the main draw in the Rogers Cup. He lost to Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-3. After carefully analyzing his match that day, Schnur said, “I really learned a lot about myself and what it takes to play at the next level.” Schnur, a former Bill Crothers Second- ary School student, is going back to school this fall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but he expects to be partici- pating in a Davis Cup event against Colum- bia in Halifax Sept. 12-14. Currently sitting at number 456 in the world, Schnur is following the footsteps of other successful Canadian tennis players, such as Milos Roanic and Vasek Pospisil, with his rapid success in the tennis world so far. As the amount of Canadian tennis play- ers are increasing more than ever before, Schnur has some advice for young players who wish to turn pro someday: “Make sure you are committed for a long term because it’s going to take you 10 years and 10,000 hours to reach your goals in tennis,” he said. Schnur was not bluffing when he said 10 years. Speaking from his own experience, he started when he was nine. “I started at 9 years old at the Dunmoore tennis club playing with Brian Hurd in some local tennis camps,” Schnur added reflecting back on his past. Nowadays, Schnur continues to intense- ly train on and off the court to prepare for more upcoming events. “I train three to four hours of tennis a day and on top of that one hour of fitness,” he pointed out. “Fitness is a huge part of my game now which is why it is so important to spend quality time off court.” du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Au g u s t 2 7 , 2 0 1 4 18 P Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor / bkelly@durhamregion.com / 905-579-4400 #2254 PICKERING -- Pickering’s Brayden Schnur is on the rise in the tennis world. He is shown here competing at the Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto. Photo courtesy Tennis Canada Pickering Red Sox win junior silver PICKERING -- The Pickering Red Sox junior baseball club finished the season with a strong playoff run and advanced to the final game of the Toronto Baseball Association Final Four weekend. The short-handed Red Sox club lost 11-5 to the first-place Etobicoke Rangers in the final. It was Pickering’s eighth game over seven days and the Rangers’ depth, expe- rience and excellent play was hard for all teams in the Final Four to overcome. The Red Sox finished the regular sea- son with a record of 14 wins, 12 losses and one tie. Their record had them tied with the North York Blues for sixth place in the 14-team league. That meant Pickering had to play the 10th place Oshawa Legionaires in a one game elimination. Pickering won the slugfest 19-8. Then the Red Sox had to face the sec- ond-place Whitby Chiefs in a best-of- three with the winner advancing to the Final Four. Pickering won the first game 8-7, Game 2 went to Whitby with anoth- er close score of 7-6, forcing the deciding Game 3. Pickering held on to another one- run lead with a 10-9 victory to advance. All games with the Chiefs were excellent ball games. In the opening game of the Final Four at Talbot Park in Toronto, Etobicoke grabbed an early lead to defeat the Sox 9-4. The next outing had the Red Sox beat the fourth-place East York Bull Dogs 7-3. This set up a game with third place finishers, the Newmarket Hawks. An entertaining Red Sox 7-3 win over the Hawks set up the final game of the weekend, with Etobicoke Rangers taking the gold and Pickering Red Sox the silver. The more information you pro- vide to the reader, the better the responses will be to your ad. • Always include the price of an item for sale. • Avoid abbreviations. They make your ad harder to read and less effective. • Use larger type, white space, or decorative characters, such as stars, to bring attention to your ad. • Run your ad for an ample length of time. Remember, as soon as you get results, you can cancel at any time during regular business hours. Call us today! We’ll be glad to help you.
