The wood from the original breakwaters built in the 1850s is being re- purposed to create a railway along the path on the east spit. Arnold Mostert, senior coordinator of landscape and parks development, examined a piece of the old wood. Some of the wood will also be used to make a picnic shelter at the museum. Huge white pine timbers used to build the harbour’s original breakwaters back in the 1850s are being given a new lease on life. The remnants of the hand- hewn logs are being used by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority to build a post and rope railing along the pathway on the east spit. “Some of them are huge, they’re 30 feet long,” says Arnold Mostert, senior coordinator of landscape and parks development for the City of Pickering. Council’s first planning and development committee meeting after the summer recess is expected to include a report and recommen- dation from City staff on the “Dur- ham Live” rezoning proposal. City officials have spent the past few months pouring over numer- ous studies as well as feedback from agencies and the public, “This is a significant develop- ment,” says Catherine Rose, the City’s chief planner. “It’s laying the groundwork for a very major investment in Pickering and a tour- ist node for all of Durham and the east GTA.” The City has received an applica- tion from Pickering Developments Inc. to rezone three pieces of land near Bayly and Church streets for a massive tourism development. Kids explore trades at Durham College camp Skills Ontario hosts camp that showcases different trades Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com WHITBY -- A group of students who took a summer camp program at Durham Col- lege could help rectify the skills shortage that Ontario is facing. Skills Ontario, a not-for-profit organiza- tion dedicated to promoting the skilled trades and technologies, is working toward an economically vibrant Ontario while encouraging the next generation of work- ers to do what they love. The Skills Work! Camp, a week-long day program for kids entering grades 7 and 8, was held at Durham College’s Whitby cam- pus in August. “I think they’re getting the idea that apprenticeships and colleges are the option if these are the careers that they want to go in,” said Jennifer Hood, a liaison officer with Skills Ontario. She said the camp at Durham College is one of 26 that Skills Ontario is running throughout the province this summer. “I wanted to try something different and see what I’d like to do in the future,” said Rashad Ali, a student about to enter Grade 8 at a Scarborough school. Campers take part in hands-on counsel- lor and industry-led workshops in indus- trial, construction, motive power, services and technology sectors. Durham College instructors led some of the workshops. “I think this camp gives them a taste of the different trades,” said Skills Ontario liaison officer Higgen Li. Rashad has found he’s interested in the carpentry and automotive industries, but he’s not settled on what he’ll do when he’s finished high school. “I really like cars,” Rashad said. The students explored careers in skilled trades through interactive games, industry tours and entrepreneurship programs. At the camp on Aug. 12, students made miniature cars and raced their finished products. “I enjoy it a lot,” said Hari Venkatraman, a student going into Grade 8 at John Dryden Public School. Other activities throughout the week included a carpentry workshop; apple swan carving; and an automotive work- shop. Curtis Munns, about to begin Grade 9 at Donald A. Wilson Secondary School, is particularly interested in engineering and thought he’d like to get some experience in some of the trades this summer. “You’re always innovating and you’re always creating,” he said of the camp. WHITBY -- Hari Venkatraman and Erik Solymos concentrated on putting together an electric model car at a Skills Work! Camp at the Durham College Whitby Campus. The camp is a week-long day program for kids entering Grade 8 and 9. Through hands-on activities relevant to the skilled trades, campers develop communication, problem- solving and teamwork skills. When a person is drowning in despair, hallucinating, is confused and in desperate need of help, this is not the time to expect they are mentally capable of picking up a phone book and locating the nearest or best-suited help line. Do they look under ‘Help Line’, ‘Suicide Prevention’, ‘Crisis Intervention’, ‘Mental Ill- ness’ or ‘Alcoholics Anonymous’? Is that a provincial or federal listing? Is it in the Blue Pages or the Yellow Pages? Google? This does not help. Sufferers are more likely to throw the phone book across the room and curl up in the corner ... or worse. They were reaching out, but couldn’t find help. I suggest, on a nationwide basis, we add one more option to 911: Fire, police, ambulance ... or counselling? Our 911 operators could immediately transfer the caller to the appropriate, quali- fied and recognized service. This would be a significant step in recognizing that peo- ple suffering these hardships are in a life- threatening situation. We have to make it easier for people. Larry Busch Characters, clothes and conductors Before us stood approximately 600 characters, with another 1,200 or more out- side. There were enough stories to last two lifetimes. A couple of my favourite auction cus- tomers wear conductor’s outfits complete with caps as their own personal suits. This is something I had never witnessed when I worked in the city. Of course I inquired about which railway they worked for, mak- ing the natural assumption they most likely were retired and continued to dress as conductors. Amidst roars of laughter I was informed this was in fact a costume of sorts they wore daily for most of their adult lives. Not only did they never work for CN, neither had ever been on a train. Another fellow who frequently attends wears what looks like nine layers of clothes, give or take. When he cashes out and pays his bill the process takes about 30 or so minutes as he pulls stashes of cash from behind numerous layers of clothing. I asked him once why he wore so many layers -- his theory was that each article of clothing had holes in it and each in different places -- so the nine layers of clothing actually was one complete suit. There is an entire group of guys who dress only in clothing gifted to them from farm machinery dealerships. Needless to say the clothing frequently didn’t come in their size, not that it mat- ters. And as far as matching this was not a requirement either. What I have come to appreciate are the individuals and characters that surround us. There is a level of acceptance in this rural area that celebrates and applauds a person’s character and constitution. This is something I rarely saw in my other world. And as my mother used to tell me, ‘We all have cracks, that’s what lets the light in.’ -- Marsha Hill is currently working for Gary Hill Auctions after working in the corporate world for almost 30 years. She lives in Port Perry. Marsha Hill From the Boardroom to the Barn Guest column Victory for GM retirees in Durham Region A group of salaried retirees of General Motors has proven you can play David to Goliath and claim victory. The retirees took GM to court after the automaker arbitrarily cut their benefits during its restructuring at the height of the economic crisis in 2008. Some had been retired for several years and relied on the benefits they had earned as part of their employment and post- employment years. One of the affected 3,200 employees included Joe O’Neill, who retired from the corporation in 2002. After GM announced the cuts, it spurred Mr. O’Neill to fight back, which led to sev- eral rounds of legal hearings. He died in 2012, but the case he started led to a set- tlement that was announced earlier this month and ratified by the court. Under the agreement, the major sticking point, life insurance benefits, were partial- ly restored, as were other reduced bene- fits. The outcome is a credit to the persis- tence of the group of salaried retirees who opposed GM’s position that it could make such decisions unilaterally and who believed they were on the right side of the issue. Some is due, too, to GM for abandoning this damaging and adversarial conflict and approaching the group to negotiate the settlement that was ultimately reached by both sides of the dispute. The corporation could have chosen to continue pursuing its position and dragged out the process, but instead chose to seek compromise. Now the retirees, all of whom served the corporation for varying amounts of their adult lives, can get back to living and enjoying their retirements without the spectre of not being adequately covered by the benefits they earned and were agreed up on by the corporation. It’s true that GM faced an existential threat at the height of the economic down- turn, so much so that a multi-billion bail- out provided by taxpayers was required for the corporation to endure. So, it’s not sur- prising in the circumstance that company executives identified as many cost-cutting measures as possible to emerge from the crisis with a healthier balance sheet. But for Joe O’Neill and fellow retirees who served the corporation faithfully for decades, some of whom had been retired for years prior to the crisis, the move spurred them to action because they felt they were simply identified as easy targets for arbitrary benefit reductions. Their effort secured a better future for retirees and prompted the corporation to revisit its decisions. A flick of the wrist, the front of the line I took my boys to Canada’s Wonderland yesterday. It was our first trip back in a little over a decade. A lot can change in 10 years -- and a lot of things remain the same. For starters, I must’ve had much more patience 10 years ago and perhaps a lot less money. The boys were little then and their mom and I were happy to wait in long line- ups to get on their favourite rides. I suppose their lovely, youthful exuberance carried us through the experience. This time around the thought of wasting even 15 precious minutes waiting in line seemed completely unpalatable to me. I must have had a lot more common sense 10 years ago too, as, on this go-round, I happily took a second mortgage on my home and, without even blinking, purchased several ‘Fast Lane’ passes; innocuous-looking wrist- bands that have the amazing ability to whisk you past the perspiring, ragged throngs in steerage and directly to the front of the line. I’m embarrassed to tell you what I paid for these things but, believe me, they were worth every blessed penny. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen some of the lineups in this park but they make the Bataan Death March look like a sack race. I remember, on one of my firsts visits, seeing a sign posted along the kilometres of aluminum handrails that form a kind of human cattle chute for each ride, that read ‘Two Hour wait from this point’. I’ve always felt there should been a little par- enthetical addendum below those words. Something like ‘Don’t you feel stupid?’ At any rate, queue-jumping past hundreds of irate people, who have been standing for hours in 40-degree humidity, takes some getting used to. Despite ‘being on TV’ for a living, my career as a Canadian actor has never afforded me anywhere close to what one might call an affluent lifestyle. Neither I, nor my children, have any real experience in walking in the shoes of a Gats- by or Rockefeller. And, as I’ve mentioned, just to pay for these wristbands, I had to indenture both of my kids to work as labour- ers at the park for the next 25 years. Suffice it to say, our first few runs up that gaunt- let were guilt-filled, angst-ridden passages. With every step we could feel the hollow, ride-hungry eyes of the great un-wristband- ed masses burning holes in our privileged backs. Faces forward, we hurried along, murmurs of discontent and dark promises of revenge trailing in the humidity behind us. Still, as remorseful as we felt, there is a surprisingly anesthetic quality to repeat- edly and freely going to the front of the line. One gets used to it rather quickly. I’m a lit- tle ashamed to admit that after an hour or two of this kind of flagrant class-ism, I found myself seeing eye to eye with people like Marie Antoinette and Tsar Nicholas. And of course, one’s perspective shifts -- and not always in the best of directions. I remember throwing what can only be described as a hissy fit when, with bladder bursting, I dis- covered that my magic wristband afforded me no advantage whatsoever in getting to a urinal. Likewise were we brought back to earth upon leaving the park. It has been said that death is the great equalizer. I would argue that traffic gets us first. Once outside the gates our wristbands were as useless as holy water at a Metallica concert. In the car there was no racing to the front of the line. Only slowly crawling, carbon-spewing vehi- cles and the grinning faces of those we had passed earlier in the day. Some things never change. -- Durham resident Neil Crone, comic, actor, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column. 10 Summer Aprhrodisiacs for Women Enter Laughing Neil Crone Actor, comic, writer Let’s Talk Weigh in with readers on topics of the day www.facebook.com/ newsdurham Poll The notion of protecting one’s property figured prominently in a recent court case in neigh- bouring Northumberland Region in which a man faced charges after confronting those he believed reponsible for vandalizing his home. Most students are optimistic that they will repay their debt within five years, yet the majority of them said they expect to graduate with debt loads of more than $10,000. Further, four in 10 expect to owe over $25,000 by the time they graduate. Key findings of the poll include: • 51 per cent of Canadian post-second- ary students have or will need to borrow money to pay for their education, includ- ing tuition, books and living expenses • By the time they complete their educa- tion, 73 per cent of students expect to owe more than $10,000 • 40 per cent expect to have more than $25,000 in student debt • Two-thirds (66 per cent) expect to pay back their debt in five years or less. Advice to help manage education costs and reduce debt: • Talk to an Adviser - Making debt reduc- tion a focus of conversation with an advi- sor can help students put realistic steps in place to reduce interest costs and acceler- ate debt repayment. • Create a budget - Having a financial plan in place can help students make the most of their resources, while in school and after graduation. • Stick to your plan - Once you have a plan in place, stick to it. If you fall off track, get back to your budget as soon as possible to keep your expenses in check. Source: CIBC 10. Infused water 9. Yellowtail sashimi 8. Frozen Treats 7. Musky scents 6. Cashews 5. If the kids had been disciplined (or punished, if warranted) from the get-go, he would never have gotten to that point ! Alicia Cowan: I don’t blame the man for his actions. It’s very frustrat- ing to constantly have your house vandalized. We have had our house egged by teenage girls in our neighbourhood and caught them red-handed. To the person that made the comment about ageism, he saw them from their car. Kelly Murphy-Campo: How dare these punks harass this family, and after the 1st time Mr. Littlechild should have been able to call the police and have them charged and let their par- ents know what their rotten kids are up to and have take responsibility for their kids. The court should have given them all community service. Elizabeth Witte-Coates: I am also glad he got off. We have had kids ringing our doorbell, throwing eggs all over the neighborhood, breaking into our cars, smashing our car windows ect. We just installed a camera and cant wait to catch them. So frustrating!!! Larry Dickinson: As far as I am con- cerned, the homeowner has every right to defend and protect his/her property and self. If the police won’t or can’t help, then the homeowner needs to catch them on camera and provide the proof to police. If that fails, then I think what the home- owner did was acceptable. However, I am not 100% sure we are getting all of the facts. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Au g u s t 2 0 , 2 0 1 4 8 AP • 20 hours in classroom instruction • 10 private in-car lessons on automatic • FREE pick-up at home • Courses start every week • Defensive driving instruction Learn Life Saving Skills • Skid Control Evasive Maneuvers • BrakingTechniques • FREE progress report card •EARLIER ROAD TEST TRAIN WITH THEPROFESSIONALS! The history of Frenchman’s Bay dates back to 1843 when the first activities at the Pickering harbour started with the opening of a channel from Lake Ontario into Frenchman’s Bay and the building of piers. The Pickering Harbour Company was established in 1845; by that time, three million feet of lumber was being shipped out of the port each year. “It was quite the hub,” says Becky George, local history and genealo- gy librarian with the Pickering Public Library. “We know it now as a site for recre- ation but it started with industry. Ship- ping became less important after rail was introduced...but for many years it was a very busy place.” Reconstruction of the Frenchman’s Bay harbour entrance started in Decem- ber 2012 and is on track to wrap up in October. The $9-million project includes new concrete walkways, two new breakwa- ters and a wider harbour entrance to improve safety for boaters and enhance public recreation and tourism. Working in con- junction with Durham Hospice, we will profile people who are nearing the end of life’s journey, who they are, what they want people to know and remember about them. We will also be featuring the people and volunteers associated with Durham Hos- pice, the active role they take, the training, the friendships and emotions involved. OSHAWA -- For better or worse. In sickness and in health. Marriage vows agreed upon almost a year ago by Terry and Lorna Stacey after a fairy- tale romance that was sparked in Cuba. Their differing NHL allegiance -- Lorna a Montreal Canadiens fan, Terry for the Toronto Maple Leafs -- hasn’t driven a wedge between them. So something like scleroderma doesn’t stand a chance. “I couldn’t do it without him. Without him there is no way I’d be fighting it the way I am,” says Lorna from the comfort of her couch in Oshawa, Terry by her side as he’s always been. It was October 2012 when Lorna was offi- cially diagnosed with scleroderma, a skin dis- ease that can also attack the internal organs, muscles and joints. At the time, she was given a potential time frame of one year to live if it wasn’t controlled. A year previous she began to show signs of Raynaud’s phenomenon -- a loss of circulation in her hands and fingers began to turn them purple. She was officially diagnosed with Raynaud’s in January 2012. Numbness in her shoulders, extreme swell- ing in her arms and difficulty swallowing began, resulting in esophageal dilations that she has endured about every three months for the past two years. In the fall of 2012 more symptoms of scleroderma surfaced. Lorna, having done extensive research, and having consulted an aunt with scleroderma, knew what she was dealing with. “I had every symptom known to man from my teeth hurting, to my jaw hurting, rash on my legs, lack of mobility,” says the 37 year old. “Day by day I had less mobility. I couldn’t sit on a couch by myself, couldn’t get up.” Within five minutes of an appointment with a rheumatologist in October 2012, it was diagnosed that she had systemic scleroder- ma. Growing up in Montreal, Lorna never experienced any health issues. She moved into Ontario in 2002, settling into Glengar- ry. It was on a trip to Cuba with a friend in 2009 that she met Terry, who was there to celebrate a friend’s wedding. The two hit it off and managed a long distance relation- ship for four months, making weekend vis- its and meeting for dinner through the week in Kingston, the midway point between their homes. Four months later, Lorna moved to Oshawa to be with Terry and his two daugh- ters from a pre- vious marriage, Kayla, 12, and Tessa, 8. She was working for Com- munity Living Dur- ham North, and short- ly after, Kerry’s Place Autism Services, supporting adults with autism. She had to quit working after the scleroder- ma diagnosis. Having lived together for just over three years, Terry proposed on Christmas Eve 2012 (yes, we shared a joke that he couldn’t think of anything else to buy for Christmas). A Sep- tember 2013 wedding was planned, giving Lorna hope and something to fight for. “Somewhere in the back of my head I had that fear,” that she wouldn’t live long enough to walk down the aisle, she admits. “With scleroderma it can change very quickly. I had the wedding to look forward to while I was fighting the biggest battle of my life.” That battle included five weeks of chemo- therapy, countless medications and numer- ous trips to the doctor’s office. “That first year I don’t think we went to a doctor’s appointment, a different doctor every month if not more, I don’t think we left without crying at any appoint- ment,” she shares. The couple will celebrate their first anniversary in September. To help ease the stress of what they are going through, Terry plans something every month, something Lorna can look forward to. “I didn’t identify a role. I just live it day by day, week by week,” says Terry. “We just make the best of it.” The toughest part of living with scleroder- ma is the unpredictability, says Lorna. She can be fine in the afternoon, and by evening, so violently ill she can’t leave the house for days or weeks. It goes the other way just as fast. Her hands are starting to curl inward, mak- ing it difficult to do daily tasks. “I can be upstairs blow drying my hair and they will count the number of times the brush falls on the floor,” she laughs. There is fatigue and her body constantly aches and hurts. The battle has changed her perspective on life. “Everybody expects me to be depressed and sad and worried all the time. But I’ve been the happiest I’ve ever been since I got sick. “It completely changes your whole per- spective on life. How you look at things, who you want to spend your time with. We’ve been doing things on our bucket list that maybe we wouldn’t have done because you always wait for a better moment or time.” In June of this year she used her Facebook page to chronicle her experiences on a daily basis. The reaction was overwhelming. “I kept my Facebook page very quiet. I barely had anybody on there,” she says. “Next thing you know I was getting privately mes- saged from people in Australia, Ireland, Scot- land, all over the States. People from all over the world are messaging me their stories, what they are going through. “It was shocking. I didn’t think I would get that response.” It confirmed to her, despite her reserva- tions, she was doing the right thing by going public. “I’ve opened myself up hoping that I can somehow inspire people to be happy regard- less of the battles they face and regardless of the uncertainty of what may come ... Aware- ness breeds compassion, which leads to funding for research, which leads to cures. “I am not scleroderma, but I am the face of it. Everyone has a story. Sometimes that story cannot be seen on the surface, so try to always treat people with kindness and com- passion because everyone has a battle they are fighting. Most importantly, try to choose happiness over spending time asking ‘Why me?’ It doesn’t change a situation, it simply makes it more difficult to fight it.” She invites anyone going through sclero- derma, or has a family member experiencing it, to contact her through Facebook. Durham Hospice fall programs The Durham Hospice has a couple of new programs it will be launching in the fall. Drop-in children’s and teen’s bereave- ment groups for children aged 6-12 and teens 13-17 will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 24 and running through to Oct. 29. Parents can drop off their children or teenagers and join a bereavement group with other parents. There will be six sessions in all with varying topics. The program will be held at Durham Hospice, 1650 Dundas St. E., Whitby. Call 905-240-4522 ext. 116 for more information. Durham Hospice will also be holding an official opening of its new day program in Pickering on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The opening will be held at the Chartwell Parkway Retire- ment Residence, 1645 Pickering Parkway, from 10-11 a.m. In the fight of her life OSHAWA -- Oshawa’s Terry and Lorna Stacey on their wedding day Sept. 14, 2013. DLDA has not lost sight of today’s economy or that young parents want the best for their children by keeping classes and recital costumes to a reasonable price, o ering family discounts and easy to handle eight week payments. You can visit the web site at www. deniselesterdance. com to read about the alumni whom are performing on Broadway, Vegas and Stratford, on “So You Think You Can Dance”, cruise ships, and Wonderland. Sara, Mohogany and Megan are performing daily at Wonderland in the “British Invasion” outdoor show at Canada’s Wonderland. Whether dancing for you is just once a week for fun or something that you would like to take seriously you and your child can have the opportunity to be taught by this wonderfully successful faculty of teachers who accomplish so much with their students. Many parents say that after their child has taken classes with Durham Taekwondo their child has shown increased self-con dence, motivation and a desire to excel. The Kick Smart™ Transported After School Program for ages 4 to 13 years old is a constructive alternative to daycare. Your child is picked up at their school and taken to Durham Taekwondo for one low price, making it easy to eliminate childcare costs. The program has been created to enhance the overall development of your child by giving them the tools to succeed as future leaders in their schools and communities. This is accomplished through the combination of certi ed teachers and martial artists. The Kick Smart™ program provides assistance with schoolwork and is structured so that students develop the habit of completing homework daily as well as participating in regular exercise through a martial arts curriculum. There is an anti-bullying curriculum which is taught in both the after-school and regular programs. The Kick Smart™ After School Program is very exible when it comes to the convenience of picking up your child. You can pick them up after work any time between 5:15 to 6:15pm. Taekwondo teaches students many di erent mental attributes. These attributes include but are not limited to; self-discipline, self-control, con dence, and a stress-free mind. Some of the physical traits your child will develop are; speed, balance, agility and strength. For families that do not require after school care, Durham Taekwondo o ers evening and weekend classes for anyone over the age of 3. The program curriculum is designed speci cally for each age group; Little Dragons are 4 to 6 years old, Kid’s Club is for 7 to 12 year olds and there are programs for teens and adults. The Black Belt Club is o ered for those who have a competitive edge and are interested in tournament training. Later this year the Parent and Tot Baby Dragon classes will be added for 2 and 3 year olds. Durham Taekwondo/Karate Martial Arts is a member of the Ontario Taekwondo Association and Taekwondo Canada. Their classes di er from other Taekwondo classes as they are taught by renowned instructors who are internationally recognized for their contributions to the sport of Taekwondo. Master So a Hovnanian is a 4th Dan Black Belt who has received the highest recognition from the World Taekwondo Federation for promoting education in the sport. Master So a has also been recognized locally for her contributions to her community, receiving the Amateur Sports Award from the City of Pickering. As important as these steps are, there are several other considerations to be aware of. In a recent survey by the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA), Ontario Realtors overwhelmingly agreed with the following advice to home sellers: Be forthcoming with your Realtor about any issues that might affect the sale of your home (81% of Ontario Realtors ‘strongly agree’). Try to be as objective as possible when choosing the list price for your home (80% ‘strongly agree’). Discuss your expectations of your Realtors’ role and the home selling process before listing your home (79% ‘strongly agree’). Take the time to properly prepare and stage your home so that it is most attractive to prospective buyers (75% ‘strongly agree’). Have an idea of what you are looking for and where you’d like to buy your next home before listing your current one (53% ‘strongly agree’). “Selling your home requires teamwork and a spirit of cooperation,” says Costa Poulopoulos, the president of OREA. “Your Realtor is a valuable member of the team, and your support will ensure that his or her contributions result in a successful sale.” More information is available at www.wedothehomework.ca. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Au g u s t 2 0 , 2 0 1 4 20 AP Top 5%Nationally2006* Top 3%Nationally2007-2013* Royal Lepage Connect Realty Brokerage Independently Owned and Operated Office:(905)683-1790 Direct 416-574-3333 Email:lsabino1081@rogers.com Web:www.LouiseSabino.com “ExceleratingExcellence” SaleS RepReSentative louiSea.Sabino 2 BDRM + DEN CONDO IN CENTRAL PICKERING For Lease $1,800/Monthly All Inclusive Exclusive Sale $319,900 GloriousSunnyViewsAreThePerfectSettingForThisSpacious2Bedroom+Den.FeaturingPristinePlankHardwoodFlooring, Spacious Master Bedroom With W/I Closet & 4 Piece Ensuite. It has been an incredible journey, one of great pride. The studio has experienced much growth from the basement of my parent’s home to our current location, from a single instructor to a faculty and sta of 11. The list goes on. What has remained the same is our dedication to sharing our love of this beautiful art form with our students while instilling technique, commitment and team work. As the director I am thrilled to work with my amazing faculty and sta . Not only are they experts in this eld they are beautiful people inside and out. Teaching children, seeing their passion and skills develop is our reward. These 30 years have been lled with successes from everyday accomplishments of new skills to exceptional results in our BATD and Acrobatic Arts examinations to our many medals and trophies won at competitions. By far our favourites are the “I got it” moments. There is nothing more exciting than hearing cheers through the walls and within seconds a child comes running in to invite us to watch the newly attained skill. I smile with pride more at the display of con dence than the actual skill. There is a “thing” oating around social media, “What would I say today to my 16 year old self?” Who hasn’t said, “if I only knew then what I know now” at least a few times? Here is “What I would say today to my 19 year old dance teacher self” 1. Stay educated and up to date. Believe it or not at 19 you don’t know it all. Take as many classes as you can. There are people older, wiser and more experienced to learn from. 2. Take business classes. Artists make far too many decisions with their hearts. 3. Stay in shape. The dance industry is going to change when reality shows, YouTube videos and such hit television and computer screens. You are going to have to keep up with 10 year olds doing senior level skills and choreography. 4. Stay humble. 5. See every child. Your goal is to establish positive self-esteem and passion for dance. Remember that every student can develop passion, regardless of skill level. Do everything you can to communicate that you believe each dancer will succeed. And they will. This list could go on. I wonder what I might say a few years from now. Perhaps I will revisit this in 5 years. In the meantime I will be working out, taking class and preparing to be the best director and teacher for my dancers and their families. I sincerely thank the dance community past and present, my beautiful faculty and my family for a great 30 years. I feel so blessed to be entrusted with so many prized possessions - your children. Cheers. An April 7 public meeting on the issue drew more than 100 members of the public to Pickering City Hall. Ms. Rose said the City has received about 60 e-mails from residents on the proposal. There has also been feedback from stake- holders such as the Ministry of Transpor- tation, Region of Durham, Toronto Region Conservation Authority. The Town of Ajax has expressed “a number of concerns,” Ms. Rose noted. A recent City staff report from Ajax says it would be premature for Pickering to grant re- zoning approval. Gary Muller, the manager of planning for Ajax, says the proposal from Pickering Devel- opments Inc. includes a partial Hwy. 401 interchange at Church, as well as a connec- tion between Notion nd Squires Beach roads. He said the Province has not done any design work for a Church interchange, nor has the cost of building the interchange been included in any financial forecast. “Somebody’s dreaming in technicolour,” Ajax Ward 4 local Councillor Pat Brown said, of the proposal. Pickering staff won’t comment on the con- tent of the report until it is made public on Aug. 22, but Ms. Rose said traffic manage- ment and protection of the surrounding nat- ural heritage areas are two priorities. The lands in question total about 90 hect- ares and are bounded by Hwy. 401 and GO Transit rail to the north, Church to the east, Bayly to the south and CN Rail tracks to the west. The land is currently vacant and is zoned to allow manufacturing, storage and industrial uses. Since there is no zoning cate- gory that allows for all the proposed uses, the intent is to create a site-specific zoning cate- gory. Pickering Developments Inc. wants to re- zone the entire site, but is looking to have approval of the amendment done in two phases. The division is intended to separate lands that don’t have constraints due to nat- ural features, from those that will require a more a more detailed environmental impact study. Katherine Holmes, a spokeswoman for the developer, said there is no comment at this time, but expects an announcement to be made sometime in September. Pickering Council will vote on the staff rec- ommendation at its Sept. 15 meeting. -- With files from Keith Gilligan Casino issue back at Pickering council committee next month PICKERING -- Pickering City Council heard a proposal to rezone three pieces of land in Pickering to create a huge tourist destina- tion called Durham Live at a public meeting in April. PICKERING TOWN CENTRE Lower Level Centre Court Durham Taekwondo/Karate Martial Arts Sponsored by Grenade scare in Pickering as man drops off ammo at police station Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Police in Pickering went on high alert Wednesday when a bag of a war-era ammunition turned in for dis- posal was found to contain a grenade. The device -- it was intact, but likely inert -- was isolated and properly dis- posed of, Durham police said. But the incident prompted police to issue a reminder that guns, ammunition and other potentially dangerous materials shouldn’t be brought into police sta- tions. “If you’ve got something like that to be turned in, we’ll come to your house,” Sergeant Bill Calder said Thursday. The incident began about 3 p.m. when the man walked into the West Division station on Kingston Road with the intent of handing over ammunition he’d found in his father’s wartime foot locker. An officer was alarmed to find a military- issue grenade among the material. The bag was secured outside the back of the station and examined by mem- bers of Durham’s explosive disposal unit. Armed Forces members from CFB Tren- ton were called in to safely detonate the device, Sgt. Calder said. Although the device was likely inert, it was disposed of according to protocol, he said. The incident appears to be a case of good intentions gone awry. “He thought he was going to turn in some ammunition,” Sgt. Calder said of the resident, who apparently had no idea he was toting a grenade when he walked into the station. “It was totally in good faith. He was try- ing to do the right thing.” Police advise residents wishing to dis- pose of guns or ammo to call them so that officers can be dispatched to man- age the transaction safely. Sgt. Calder noted that signs are post- ed at Durham police stations, warning against entering with guns, bullets, or other similar material. “Maybe we need bigger signs,” he mused. And not because of anything that will revolutionize the game of traditional golf. Instead, the Ajax golf course has broad- ened its clientele by becoming the first facility in the GTA to offer footgolf, ditch- ing the traditional golf clubs and golf ball, for soccer cleats and a soccer ball. “It was the perfect fit for our golf course,” says GM Deanne Janes. “We have an indoor soccer facility that we’ve used for the last six years. We already had the business in the soccer. “We had the perfect location. The per- fect fit on both angles in already having the soccer here and also having a course that is well suited for it.” Launched July 19 at Carruther’s Creek, the sport is played by people of all ages. It originated in Holland about 10 years ago and moved into the United States over the past five years. The sport continues to grow, and is just starting to catch on in Canada. Footgolf incorporates the same rules as golf, with nine holes offered on the par-3 Whistling Wind course. The champion- ship LakeBreeze course at Carruther’s Creek is reserved for golf only, leaving a minimal impact on members and public players. Like golf, players begin on the tee block and work their way down the fairway, ending at a 21-inch cup. All of the obstacles on the course are in play, including sand traps, water and out of bounds. It usually takes about the same time, an hour and a half, to com- plete a round of footgolf as it does nine holes of golf. Similar to regular golf, foursomes can book a tee time or a foursome can mix and match, with some golfing and others playing footgolf. It offers a great way for families to interact on a golf course if the kids are intimidated by grabbing a golf club and trying to strike a ball. So far, the new game has been well received, says Janes. “It’s not much of an investment to play,” she says. “You only need a soccer ball and running shoes, or indoor soccer cleats. You can even rent the soccer ball from us. “You don’t even need your own soccer ball so it’s a low investment for people to play.” The hope is that kids will become com- fortable on a golf course by playing foot- golf and, in the future, pick up a club, adds Janes. AJAX -- Carruther’s Creek Golf and Country Club is the first golf course in the GTA to offer footgolf, a unique combination of soccer and golf, where you play regulation golf holes but you kick a soccer ball as opposed to using golf clubs. Course general manager Deanne Janes demonstrated the sport on their 9-hole par three Whistling Wind course. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland Pickering’s Kavina Ganeshan wins gold with U15 Canada soccer CAYMEN ISLANDS -- Kavina Ganeshan and her Canadian teammates celebrat- ed gold at the inaugural CONCACAF U15 championships held in the Caymen Islands. It took a penalty shoot-out for Canada to be crowned the winner 4-1 over Haiti. Both Canada and Haiti were undefeat- ed, having only dropped points to each other during an earlier group stage encounter with a 1-1 draw after regula- tion. Like the previous game between them, this was a physical affair, with Canada attempting to break down a tough Hai- tian defence. “I’m very proud of these players,” said head coach Bev Priestman. “They showed unity and passion and when we needed them to they, individually, made things happen.” Two moments in particular stand out. The first is the goal by Captain Sarah Startigakis to tie the match at 1-1, with less than six minutes remaining in regu- lar time. The second is the performance of Lysianne Proulx, Canada’s goalkeeper. Proulx not only stopped a break away in the opening minutes, but also shut Haiti down in the penalty shootout. Canada scored on all of its shots, while Proulx stopped Haiti’s first and third attempts. “The scary things about this,” said Priestman “is that these players could have twenty years in our system. It’s exciting.” Ajax’s Candace Chapman, who won an Olympic bronze medal with Cana- da’s women’s team at the 2012 London Games, served as a technical assistant for the team. ©2014 smart Canada,a Division of Mercedes-Benz Canada Inc.Model shown is a smart fortwo electric drive coupé with European equipment.Total Price for the smart fortwo electric drive coupe is $16,490 which includes MSRP,dealer fees of $1,819,$7,522 Ontario Electric Vehicle Incentive Rebate (before taxes) and a $4,800 dealer discount.*$13,300 savings include up to $8,500 (including taxes) in Ontario Electric Vehicle Incentive Rebate and a $4,500 dealer discount.*Lease offer based on the 2014 smart fortwo electric drive coupé available only through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services on approved credit for a limited time.Lease example based on $99 per month for 36 months.Down payment of $0 plus dealer fees of $1,819,first month’s payment of $99 and applicable taxes due at lease inception.Security deposit is waived.MSRP starting at $26,990.LeaseAPR of 1.9% applies.Total obligation is $5,383.12,000 km/year allowance ($0.20/km for excess kilometres applies).Vehicle license, insurance and registration are extra.Dealer may lease or finance for less.1$1,000 loyalty offer applicably only to existing smart and Mercedes-Benz owners (including Sprinter). To qualify for loyalty credits, proof of current smart,Mercedes-Benz,or Sprinter ownership (ie.completeVIN and matching name on registration) is required on delivery.Offers may change without notice.See Mercedes-Benz Durham for details.Offers end September 30th,2014.
