HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2014_05_01_ Current rink has no refrigeration, no water source Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- There are some winters when the outdoor ice rink in Claremont is barely used at all. The rink, located in Claremont Park, is basically a piece of asphalt surrounded by boards, flooded with water in the winter. With no refrigeration system and no near- by source of water, residents say it’s “nearly impossible” to maintain a usable ice surface. “It has definitely degraded over the years,” says Brian Welsh, an associate director with the Clare- mont District Community Associa- tion. “This past winter was good because it was really cold. There are some winters it only gets used maybe two or three days.” Residents have to truck in water for flooding; they often use shovels, snowblowers and tractors to scrape off the snow. Pickering council recently direct- ed City staff to work on a master plan for Claremont Park, including a proposal for a new outdoor rink. “The rink now is not artificially cooled so it’s hard to keep the ice usable with varying temperatures,” says Councillor David Pickles, who brought the motion to council. “While exploring a rink we need to also do a plan for the whole park to make sure we maximize its best use and correct any issues.” / durhamregion.com / @newsdurham PICKERINGNews Adver tiser AnimalsNA Thurs., May 1, 2014 / A publication of See complete story on page 15 Claremont rink may get upgrades TODAY’S ONLINE VIDEO @newsdurham Pressrun 54,400 / 28 pages / Optional 3-week delivery $6 / $1 newsstand PICKERING -- Brian Welsh checked out the outdoor rink at the Claremont Community Centre on April 29. Pickering council recently voted to study the idea of putting a new ice rink in Claremont, as well as doing a master plan for the park. The community has been struggling to use the current outdoor rink because there is no source of water or refrigeration. Some years it is only used a few days over a winter. Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma y 1 , 2 0 1 4 2 P Durham voters can see if they are on list Easy, secure website set up by MPAC Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Are you, or are you not, on the voters’ list for the municipal election this fall? Well, there’s a simple way to check and ensure your name is there. The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation has set up a website for voters to check for their name. Arthur Anderson, the director of media relations for MPAC, said the organization is “legislatively required to collect this infor- mation. We prepare a preliminary list for municipal clerks. The legislation provides us to do it and we undertake it.” Voters can check their status at www. voterlookup.ca. They need to provide the community they live in, their full name, date of birth and address, or the 19-digit roll number on a municipal tax bill. The site also lets the person know which school board they support. “We believe it’s a simple, secure and con- venient way for people to find out if they are on the voters’ list for the fall municipal and school board elections. It’s a secure online system to be more engaged,” Mr. Anderson said. Prior to the online system, MPAC would mail out municipal enumeration forms to a select number of households. “We would ask them to fill it out and we would update our records.” It’s all been replaced, for the most part, with the online system, he added. “It’s available online. Anywhere they can get access, a municipal office or a library, they can get access. We still have a 1-800 number. We’re still providing personal, indi- vidual access,” Mr. Anderson said. “It’s straightforward. We designed it. We tested it with municipalities and school boards.” A pilot project ran for two weeks in Janu- ary, with a second two-week run added. “We wanted to make sure the system met our needs.” Municipal clerks’ association and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario are “all aware of what we were doing,” Mr. Anderson said. The list is for the fall municipal election, although MPAC does “work closely with Elections Ontario and Elections Canada” in terms of putting together voters’ lists for pro- vincial and federal elections. He noted, “We do share pieces of data with one another. We try sharing information. The goal one day might be to have a single list. Right now, it’s for the municipal and school board elections this fall.” Concerns raised by the privacy commis- sioner were addressed, he noted. “We designed in those principles as well.” Among the seven principles the privacy commissioner wanted addressed are secur- ing access and protecting information that is collected, he said. To ensure someone’s information isn’t tampered with, a person is asked to include their name, address and birth date, not con- sidered to be enough information to steal an identity. Once that’s in, “we basically con- firm their electoral status. We don’t provide a list of names,” Mr. Anderson said. “You have to either be the person or know the person really well. We think it’s protected.” MPAC has worked with its major data supplier to ensure the system is secure, he added. The website will operate until the summer, he noted. In the summer, municipalities will be asking for the preliminary list, which the organization will turn over to the clerk. “We’ll be running the site until we provide the data lists,” he said. Municipalities will, in turn, send out voter notification cards, which includes when and where someone would vote. “There’s no exact date. Different munici- palities have different time lines. It will run until late July or early August. We’ll finish our work and municipalities will take over,” Mr. Anderson said. Potential voters can also check with their municipality in the fall to see if they are on the list, he added. “We encourage them to get on the list now. It will be as up to date and accurate as pos- sible. It’s something they want.” Five candidates now vying for Pickering Ward 3 seat PICKERING -- The race for Pickering’s Ward 3 City councillor seat is getting crowded. There are now five names registered for that race -- Laurissa Hraiki, Gino Sgov- io, Malcolm Schell, Shaheen Butt and Nick Nikopoulos. It’s a popular place to throw a hat in the ring, because the incumbent won’t be in the running. Current Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles recently filed to run for Ward 3 Regional councillor, facing off against incumbent Councillor Peter Rodrigues. There is now a total of 17 candidates vying for Pickering council seats. It’s still a three-way race for the may- or’s chair, with incumbent Dave Ryan squaring off against Edoh Apaloo and Maurice Brenner. Mr. Brenner is no stranger to local pol- itics -- the former City and Regional coun- cillor is taking his second shot at the may- oralty after losing to Mayor Ryan in 2010 by about 1,700 votes. The race for the Ward 1 Regional councillor spot includes incumbent Coun- cillor Jennifer O’Connell as well as Myrna Picotte and Nick Tsetsakos. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean is looking to hold onto his seat and is so far the only one registered in that race, while Deborah Bissett is the only candidate seeking the City councillor Ward 1 seat. The race for City councilor Ward 2 is currently between Ian Cumming and Cody Morrison. The first ever candidate for Durham’s regional chairman seat filed nomination papers on March 7. Whitby resident Michael Deegan, 35, is a denturist with Deegan Denture Clin- ics, a third- and fourth-generation family business with clinics in Oshawa, Ajax and Whitby. Pickering Ward 1 City Councillor Kevin Ashe and Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson are the only incumbents who haven’t indicated whether they will seek re-election. Pickering’s school board trustee races are off to a slower start. Incumbent Chris Braney will run against Paul Crawford and Corey Besso for the public board seat, while incumbent Jim McCafferty is looking to hold onto his seat on the Catholic board. Durham police say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, at the intersection of Rossland Road and Anderson Street shortly after 4 p.m. Cops said the rider, a 48-year- old Ajax man, was westbound on Rossland when his Harley Davidson collided with a van that was turning north on Anderson. The rider suffered life-threat- ening injuries. He was rushed to local hospi- tal, then transferred to a Toronto trauma centre where as of Fri- day, he was listed in serious but stable condition. Kailey O’Neill, the fundraising co-ordi- nator for the chapter, said the walks are for all ages and funds raised are used for research and client services. “We want to work towards a cure for MS and enhanced quality of life for those with MS,” Ms. O’Neill said. About 100,000 Canadians have MS, while the number of Durham residents with the disease is unknown, she said. Someone with MS isn’t required to inform anyone they have the disease. The Durham chapter doesn’t have the actual number of people with the disease, she said. “People can have it for several years and not need any assistance from us. They don’t need our financial assistance,” Ms. O’Neill said. “They aren’t required to tell us. It’s a very private disease.” MS is an auto-immune disease affecting the central nervous system. The brain, spi- nal cord and nerves are affected, she said. There are four types of MS and people can live for decades with no problem. Some could last just a few years and die from complications. There’s no cure, but there are medica- tions that can ameliorate the disease’s effects. The walk in Uxbridge on Sunday, May 4, starts at 7:45 a.m. at Uxbridge Second- ary School. The Ajax-Pickering walk starts at 8 a.m. at Ajax High School, while the Bowmanville walk is set to start at 8:15 a.m. at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. The Oshawa-Whitby walk starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Abilities Centre. “They’re all outdoor walks, so hopefully we’ll get some sunshine and the rain holds off.” Where possible, if it is raining, the walk would be moved indoors during inclem- ent weather. There are several ways to get involved in the walk, Ms. O’Neill noted. People can drop by one of the sites and walk, or they could come and sponsor someone who is walking. Or, they could come out and volunteer, she said. “If they don’t want to walk, they can give back by giving their time.” High school students needed commu- nity hours are also welcome to volunteer, she said. Last year, more than $300,000 was raised in Durham and Ms. O’Neill is hoping to at least match that amount. “If we can beat it, even better.” All four Durham walks have five- and 10-kilometre routes, with all the five-kilo- metre routes fully accessible, and most of the 10K routes accessible. Yes, Durham’s trees have been taking a massive hit recently, hammered by the ice storm, torn up by Hwy. 407, inflict- ed by a host of blights, cankers and fungi carried in by our global economy. And the latest, greatest scourge: the emer- ald ash borer, a pretty little insect from east Asia that is greedily destroying our ash trees. Ash trees that make up 30 to 40 per cent of our urban forests, and which spread so easily, freely, generous- ly across the countryside, having pointed seeds designed to drill into the earth as they fall. But let’s look at the bright side: what’s happening to so many of our trees hap- pens to be fabulous for woodpeckers. And woodpeckers are wonderful for for- ests, an integral, hugely valuable part of the woodland ecosystem. Take, for example, their diet of insects and grubs. Downy, hairy and red-bel- lied woodpeckers have already honed in on the emerald ash borer. They find the larvae so tasty that populations swell in infested areas, taking advantage of this sudden bonanza of small beige grubs under the bark. Remember, it’s not woodpeckers killing a tree, but the alien pests chewing on it. Once an ash tree is infested, it’s going to die, but if 50 per cent of the grubs attack- ing it are devoured by woodpeckers, that makes 50 per cent fewer beetles to hatch out and fly off to virgin ash groves. Which they’re doing all over eastern North America, where eight billion trees are at risk. (Mountain ash, of the rose family, is not susceptible, thank goodness.) The one good thing to come out of the December ice storm: a myriad of tree stubs and snags for woodpeckers to nest in. And the best thing we can do for woodpeckers is leave dead trunks and limbs standing -- in our creek valleys, sure, but even as a natural garden feature in our parks and yards. A neighbour of mine, heartsick when a huge silver pop- lar had to be taken down for safety rea- sons, left a monolith of its massive trunk standing, and planted Virginia creeper to cascade over it. I have a 15-foot–tall spruce stub out my sunroom window, a convenient perch for many passing birds. We humans tend to manicure our sur- roundings so severely that children grow up thinking dead trees are an eyesore, something to be ‘cleaned up’ instantly. But interesting, gnarled old trees with hollows for owls, flying squirrels and woodpeckers to nest in are treasures, and biologists claim a tree provides more benefit to the web of life after dying than it ever did while alive. Our forests, urban and rural, are part of our own living ecosystem, and we’re all in it together. Another good thing we can do: plant a tree. Plant lots of trees. Nature queries: mcarney@interlinks. net or 905-725-2116. -- Durham outdoors writer Margaret Car- ney has more than 3,000 species on her life list of birds, seen in far-flung corners of the planet. Margaret Carney The Great Outdoors See a video of Jake on Facebook facebook.com/NewsDurhamKristensKritters Oasis in Oshawa seeks help with food bank Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com Driving along Simcoe Street in Oshawa and approaching Memorial Park, it’s a sad sight that the Oasis Animal Rescue and Education Center’s storefront is closed. While Oasis is still re-homing pets in need via e-mail, phone calls and through its web- site, the food bank currently is not operating due to a number of issues. The executive director, Janet Smith, said she had no choice but to make the decision she did. She is concerned now that people who use the animal food bank -- more than 1,000 are on its roster -- are not getting access to the food and supplies for their pets that Oasis provides. I know people will say, ‘If you can’t afford a pet, why get one?’ I agree, and have written columns in the past about the high costs of pet ownership and the importance of being prepared. But no matter how much we warn people against it, many are still going to get a pet before they realize that it’s true, pets are very expensive. This is where Oasis comes into play and helps hungry pets get access to the food and supplies they need. The Oasis website explains the food bank has been established to meet the needs of those individuals in Durham Region who are having difficulty caring for their pets and sup- plying their day-to-day needs in the form of such items as food, kitty litter, shavings, bed- ding and more. Its clients are a cross-sec- tion of the population but generally fall into one of the following categories: people on the Ontario Disability Support Program, the unemployed, the elderly, senior citizens, wel- fare recipients and students. Ms. Smith has told me she doesn’t discriminate; if someone with a drug problem needs help feeding their pet, Oasis will help them too. The bottom line: people in these circum- stances exist and they need help too. And to turn them away would be to turn away the pets that they have at home that are hungry and need to eat. But now, I am also concerned about these animals not getting the food they need. Ms. Smith does hope to re-open the pet food bank in the future, but is currently look- ing for local food banks to help out by offer- ing up some space where Oasis can house and hand out the food and supplies. She said Oasis itself will manage any space that is set aside. She’d be happy with a small corner and ideally, she’d be pleased if multiple locations could offer up some space. Oasis is also looking for emergency foster homes. To help out Oasis, visit www.oasis- animalrescue.ca, call 905-728-8500 or e-mail janetsmith@oasisanimalrescue.ca . Oasis also has a number of pets up for adop- tion, which can be found on the website. UPCOMING Adoptable pets from local animal welfare organizations will be featured at PetSmart stores from May 2 to 4 for its National Adop- tion Weekend. Due to overpopulation of homeless pets, PetSmart has chosen not to sell dogs or cats and instead joins forces with PetSmart Charities to help save the lives of pets through adoptions. Pickering council's election ballot ques- tion regarding a casino in the City is virtu- ally meaningless. It's little more than a pub- licity stunt, giving the impression residents have a big say in the matter when they don't. Council last week voted unanimously to ask Pickering voters as part of the munici- pal election, “Are you in favour of a gam- ing facility (casino) in the City of Pickering as part of a hotel, convention centre, enter- tainment complex in a non-residential area?” The question is of course directly related to the rezoning application before them, namely Pickering Developments Inc.'s bid to construct a large development at Bayly and Church streets. And if there's any bias in the question it's in the last part. It almost sounds to us that by adding "in a non-residential area" the question is looking for a 'yes' response as it suggests such a complex wouldn't be close to local homes with all the related issues and concerns. But most of all, a voter encountering the question this October would reasonably think that council is going to look at the results and they will influence a decision on the Durham Live application. We've heard from some residents who are opposed to the casino and believe their opposition and others on the election ballot could tip the scales in favour of council say- ing 'no' to the casino development. However the question is meaningless as far as Durham Live goes: according to the Planning Act, Durham Live's rezoning application, any such application, has to be addressed within 120 days. Otherwise the applicant can go to the Ontario Munici- pal Board, which might make the decision for council. So council is asking residents a specific question about a specific develop- ment when the decision will be made well before the election. Pickering Clerk Debbie Shields admits it's a “confusing” situation for voters. If half of the eligible electors voted against the casi- no, council will have to honour that deci- sion for four years. But it would only apply to decisions after the election. To be fair, council did hold a public meeting where councillors garnered the thoughts of residents on the large develop- ment proposal. However it's a real head-scratcher to have this question on the ballot. Again, it's clear- ly aimed at the proposal before council and gives the false impression that a voter's for- mal opinion on the matter, expressed on the ballot, will have some influence, maybe a big influence on council's decision. It won't, so why ask? Insurance industry rules changing To the editor: I am a small businessman working in the insurance field. During the past 23 years, I have helped thousands of families obtain the protection they need and helped cre- ate jobs for many insurance agents. Ontario is changing how life insurance agents get qualified and employment will suffer. Standards won’t be higher (in fact, the testing will be less about insurance) but the process will be more expensive and complicated. So we’ll have a new system that puts unneeded barriers in front of life insur- ance sellers, without enhancing consumer protection. The government needs to real- ize it is wrong to put work out of reach for those who need the money. Especially in this economy. Gery Bittner Pickering Pickering always a ‘willing host’ To the editor: Pickering declared itself a ‘willing host’ for a casino in November 2012, flipping from a failed motion in April 2012. Pickering is a ‘willing host’ for tonnes of York waste to Duffin’s Creek wastewater management facility. Pickering is a de facto willing host for 40 years of nuclear reactor high-level waste, but only the next 30 to 50 years. Pickering is a ‘willing host’ for the next major airport in the province. Consider the fast-approaching October election and talk to your councillors, sup- port candidates or jump in the race. Avail yourself of the democratic process and speak to council, watch the videos, read the minutes. Our collective silence is translated into ‘strong support’. Barbara Pulst Pickering ‘Angels’ arrived just in time To the editor: On a recent Saturday, two carloads of ‘angels in human form’ exited their vehi- cles and approached my husband in our front yard. He was asked if he had any ‘yard work’ to do as they were on hand to do just that. Our back yard is well treed and backs onto a forest. The ice storms of 2014 left us with countless hours of manual labour. After an affirmative response, two hours later our back yard was transformed. Thank you Forest Brook Communi- ty Church. You might not be able to play golf, work, or even sit in the car for a 30-minute drive. It’s almost impossible for anyone around you to understand how you feel. You can’t remember the last time you even had a restful night’s sleep. You have too many dreams left undone to let back pain slow you down; too many special moments waiting to be experienced. Life is too short to let pain slow you down. Pain is your body’s warning sign telling you something is wrong. Sure, you can numb the pain if you take enough pain or anti-inflammatory pills. When you mask the pain, it can prevent your back from healing – maybe even damage it further. Nottomentionmanyofthepainmedicationsavailable are quite addictive and can have devastating side effects. Could This Be the Solution to your Back Pain? We are Dr. Michael Gauthier and Dr. Mark Kasiban. Over the past 17 years we’ve seen hundreds of people with back pain leave our office pain free. Because we’ve seen it with our own eyes, we know... Back pain is NOT “just a part of life” and something you have to live with. Chiropractic has been around for over a hundred years, and has been used to help everyone from tiny babies to the elderly. Even top sports stars and entertainers…like Tiger Woods, Emmitt Smith, Tony Robbins, Joe Montana, Lance Armstrong, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mel Gibson receive chiropractic care. These professional athletes have the money to hire any kind of doctor they want, yet they choose to have a chiropractor on their team. “Here’s what some patients have to say…” “I had a sore back for 20 years and after I started chiropractic it was gone.” (D. D., Ajax) “I used to cry myself to sleep…now the pain is gone” (A.P., Ajax) “I was in pain constantly. I was told I would need a hip replacement in a few years. I would have to live with the pain. After getting chiropractic adjustments I am completely pain free. I have control back in my life. Thanks.” (M.M., Whitby) Here’s what some of the top medical researchers have to say about chiropractic… “Chiropractic adjustments, with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”–British Medical Journal “Chiropractic adjustments of the spine are more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine, back corsets, and ultrasound.” --Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery This means in just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, playing with your kids, enjoying your love life, or traveling again. As part of “Responsible Pet Ownership Month,” Pickering Animal Services is team- ing up with local vet clinics to encourage resi- dents to get their animals fixed. “Cost is a barrier for a lot of people,” says Lindsey Narraway, Pickering’s supervisor of animal services. “We recognize that we have to address that if we want to reduce pet over- population.” Rosebank Animal Hospital and Forest- brook Pet Hospital are offering reduced rates for spaying and neutering services all month, while Whites Road Veterinary Hospital will provide a free microchip for all pets that undergo sterilization surgery in May. A special clinic planned for this weekend at PJ’s Pets, Pickering Town Centre, will provide rabies vaccination and microchipping for $20 each from noon to 4 p.m. Reminding the public about pet safe- ty issues is another part of Responsible Pet Ownership Month. As the weather gets warmer, the lost animal calls start to pour in at Pickering Animal Ser- vices. Ms. Narraway says some pet owners are reluctant to have their animals licensed and chipped, because they don’t think it’s likely they could go missing. “Accidents happen, we see it all the time,” she says. “In the summer months we see a lot of animals on the streets who have gotten out ... if they have a chip and they are licensed it makes it a lot easier for us to return them home.” Pickering Animal Services encourages keeping dogs on a leash when out and about -- except at Grand Valley Park where there are two off-leash areas -- and keeping cats indoors. For cats that crave the outdoors, Ms. Nar- raway suggests walking them on a leash or using outdoor cages. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma y 1 , 2 0 1 4 15 P Want to know what’s happening in Pickering? The annual arts and music festival, Sappyfest, takes place in Sackville, New Brunswick in mid-summer. The commemorative coffee-table-style book was crowd-sourced, raising $25,000 for fest expenses. A book tour kicks off May 7 and Shotgun (Jim Kilpatrick) and Jaybird (Fred Squires) will be the featured act in Toronto May 15 at the Great Hall. Kilpatrick says he was attending Pickering High School when a teacher, aware of his song-writing skills, intro- duced him to Squires. After playing in a variety of bands the two friends formed Shotgun and Jaybird when they met up again in the Yukon in 2003. The duo settled in Sackville, New Bruns- wick, and they were involved in Sappy- fest right from the start along with Julie Doiron of Eric’s Trip. Seven years after the band broke up, Squires now lives in Sudbury and Kilpat- rick is based in Brandon, Manitoba. As a solo act Shotgun Jimmie has released five full-length albums, including the Polaris Prize-nominated Transistor Sis- ter. Because of touring schedules, per- sonal and musical commitments, the idea of reforming the act wasn’t something these Durham ex-pats had considered, but “when Sappyfest calls, you answer,” says Kilpatrick, who was also the “spiritu- al advisor” for the festival. The festival began in 2006 as a gath- ering of fellow indie musicians met on the road by touring Sackville-based bands. Independent Canucks were beginning to make quite a stir worldwide but there were not that many festivals willing to take a commercial chance on their draw. Pro- moting and building a three-day party for relativity unknown acts in an east coast town of 6,000 was some undertaking. But the organizers' dedication was matched by the musicians and Sappyfest has grown to be one of the country’s great little fests, bringing in up to 2,000 visitors. In 2011, one of those indie acts, Arcade Fire, returned for a surprise show. They called themselves Shark Attack. In 2010 Sloan played an unannounced gig. This year’s festival takes place Aug. 1 to 3, with The Constantines the first act to be announced. Last year the festival was left with a debt of $15,000, but the book campaign direct- ed at supporters (250 books at $100 each) has paid that off. Contributors included musicians who have played and believe in its intentions. While Kilpatrick says he has no spiritual training and his role as advi- sor was rather tongue-in-cheek, it’s fair to say his initial visioning for the gather- ing is paying dividends for the NB town. A Mount Alison University study shows Sap- pyfest adds $300,000 to the economy. Outside of Shotgun and Jaybird, Kilpat- rick will play solo on all the stops of the book tour. He will be MC at Raw Sugar in Ottawa and Centre Gallego in Montreal. William McGuirk is a freelance writer and longtime Oshawa resident. He can be contacted at wmacg@ yahoo.com. AJAX -- Ajax musician Jim Kilpatrick, aka Shotgun Jimmie, is re-uniting with ex-band- mate Fred Squires (Jaybird) for one show as Shotgun and Jaybird to celebrate the release of the book ‘SappyForever’ on New Brunswick’s Sappyfest art and music fes- tival. www.pigeonrow.com All that jazz AJAX -- Taylor Hill played the saxaphone with the Junior Jazz Ensemble during a Jazz Cafe presented by the Pickering High School music department at St. Nedela Macedonian Orthodox Church. The film is screened at the Ajax Cin- eplex Odeon on May 7. “Le Week-end (is) a comedy-drama about an English couple who decide to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary by returning to Paris, where they spent their honeymoon,” states a press release. “This film sheds the cozy comfort of the retiree romantic comedy for an altogether more prickly and interesting love story. It stars Lindsay Duncan and Jim Broadbent as the couple and Jeff Goldblum as their insufferably success- ful old friend who they meet out there. Described by the English press as ‘a barbed, funny and poignant comedy-dra- ma’ this film is an excellent close to our season.” See the film at 7 p.m. at 248 Kingston Rd. E. (at Salem Road), Ajax. Ajax’s Brandon ‘Bad Boy’ Cook and Oshawa’s Phil ‘The Assassin’ Rose will step into the ring as the main event at the Hershey Centre to square off for the vacant NABA Canadian middleweight (160lbs.) title. The two have met previously, as ama- teurs back in 2005, and sparred on numerous occasions at the Motor City Boxing Club before Cook left to join the Ajax Boxing Club. Cook remembers the first confronta- tion in the ring well. “It was my third fight,” he recalls of the loss. “I didn’t train much. I didn’t know too much about boxing. I just came off the street and thought I could beat any- body.” Cook’s boxing career has really taken off since leaving the amateur ranks and turning professional. The 27 year old is 12-0-0 with seven knockouts, and is the reigning Canadian light middleweight (154lbs.) champion, winning the title in June of last year with an impressive first round knockout of Fitz Vanderpool. He is coming up a weight class to fight for the middleweight title. Rose, 31, is 5-2-1 as a professional with four knockouts, and is coming off an impressive performance, beating former Olympian Adam Trupish with a TKO on March 1. “The Canadian title is huge,” says Rose of the opportunity. “I know Brandon is good with his stamina, so I’ve been work- ing on that. I’ve been focusing on not wasting those big shots and capitalizing on my opportunities when they come up.” While both fighters will weigh in at 160, Rose has a much bigger frame, and hopes to use that power to his advantage. “I’m a heavy hitter. I like to throw the big shots,” he says. “At the same time I’m trying to hold back and wait for the prop- er opportunity to let those shots go.” Cook, who is seeking his second title, is also motivated by a falling out he and trainer Mike Guyett had at the Motor City Club, which prompted the duo move to Ajax and set up shop. “That’s the motivation for this fight,” he admits. “I really want this win for Mike.” Cook, who has developed a huge fol- lowing, estimates he has sold close to 600 tickets for the fight. He hasn’t been in the ring since November of last year, an unusually long layoff for him. “The last couple of weeks I’ve been really anxious,” he admits. Rose is looking forward to the clash as well. “I can’t wait. It’s going to be huge,” he says. “I love the crowd. If the crowd is with me, even better. If they’re not, then I put on my tunnel vision and focus on the opponent. The crowd won’t bother me at all. When I’m in the ring, I feel like I’m at home.” The six-fight card gets under way at 8 p.m. Brandon Cook Phil Rose Bad Boy Nickname The Assassin Ajax Hometown Oshawa 27 Age 31 160 Weight 160 12-0-0 Record 5-2-1 7 Knockouts 4 Nov., 2013 Last Fight March, 2014 At stake is the vacant NABA Canadian middleweight title. Sherwin James with 15, Trevor Bennett with 11 and Captain Roger Young with eight put the game out of reach early. Michaels scored only six points in the first half.
