The incident happened at about 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25 in the leash-free area on Church Street in north Ajax. “Apparently, there was an ice issue” that caused the woman and dog to go down the hill, Ajax Deputy Fire Chief Michael Gamba said. “We called in Pickering Fire, because they do rescue with ropes,” Mr. Gamba added. “They came in and helped the woman and the dog.” Pickering Fire Services Platoon Chief Rick Ingram said the woman was walking on a trail when her dog began sliding towards an embank- ment. President and CEO Michael Angemeer spoke to Pickering council on March 24, saying that an action plan is in the works with a final report expected in June. Proposed improvements include using social media to get information to stakeholders faster, developing a web-based power outage map and educating the public on how the power res- toration system works. “The expectation is to do a bet- ter job on giving people estimates of when the power is going to be back on, especially when they’re in the early parts of the outage ... from the perspective of people making decisions about whether to stay in their homes or not,” the CEO said. Deputy Chief Martin -- he turns 50 next week -- moves into the chief’s office as the service is challenged with fighting crime during a time of fiscal restraint. The service’s $177.6-million bud- get for 2014 represented a 3.2-per cent increase over the past year’s budget, the lowest in 18 years. Factor in a growing population and ever-evolv- ing crime trends, such as e-crimes and human trafficking, and the challenge becomes even more profound, Deputy Chief Martin said. “But this is the way it is; it isn’t going to change,” he said. “We have to evolve and adapt. It’s about being as effective as we can with the resources we have.” Deputy Chief Martin joined the Durham police in 1990 and has served in a number of capaci- ties, including two stints totalling almost 10 years with the Tactical Support Unit. He is married to Darby with whom he has two children, Maci and Miller. The appointment was lauded by Police Services Board chairman Roger Anderson. “Chief Designate Martin has consistently demonstrated that he has the experience, the skills and the commitment to lead the Durham Regional Police to new levels of innovation and excellence in policing,” he said. “We embarked on this process looking far and wide for excep- tional candidates right across the country. We are very pleased that we found the best right here at home in Durham Region.” A date for a formal change of command cere- mony has yet to be set. Paul Martin When a pothole is not a pothole on Durham roads DURHAM -- Durham drivers are being asked to be cautious of sunken manhole covers in roads this spring. The Durham Region works department says this winter’s frigid temperatures have contributed to “significant” pavement heaving and lifting. Man- hole covers have deep foundations located where frost can’t reach them, so they do not rise as the pavement does, leaving the manhole covers to appear sunken. While motorists find some pot- holes in roadways every spring, the Region points out sunken manhole covers aren’t potholes and can’t be patched up. The Region says pavement will settle back to its original elevation around manholes as the frost thaws with warmer spring temperatures. newsdurhamnewsdurhamnewsdurham du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 2 7 , 2 0 1 4 3 P Residential, Commercial, and Condominium Management Quality service at an affordable price. The event will be held Sunday, April 6 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Carruthers Marsh Pavilion, 55 Ashbury Rd. Regis- tration to participate in the event begins at 11 a.m. at the pavilion. CF is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. Victims of CF suffer exces- sive mucus in the digestive system and lungs, which results in respiratory prob- lems, and cycles of inflammation and infection which leads to severe damage in the lungs. Currently, there is no cure for CF. In 2013 the Out-Run CF event raised nearly $13,000 in donations largely from friends, family and members of the Durham Chapter of CF Canada. This year invitations to participate are being extended to all of Durham. The fund- raising goal for 2014 is $15,000. Because there is no cure for CF, Cystic Fibrosis Canada works to fund research for the disease, and to enhance qual- ity of life for individuals with CF. These contributions are all made with the help of the extended community, people with CF, caregivers, committed volun- teers, medical professionals and donors. The ones they find, they bury in little holes somewhere distant from their source. We are amazed at their “foresight”at storing the nuts for when times are tougher and the harsh winter makes other food harder to find. But,that’s not why they bury them. Those little squirrels can’t find the nuts they’ve just buried a few minutes ago,let alone finding them months later! What nature has done was to program the squirrels to bury those nuts to ensure that more oak and hickory trees grow for future generations of squirrels. Like with the squirrels, sometimes we don’t understand the wisdom of nature.Whether we understand it or not, nature has a plan that is far more intelligent than we can understand.Even our own bodies are incredibly intel-ligent.We make two million new red blood cells every second. Our body naturally pro-duces just about every “drug”known to man,yet it makes them better, sends the drug to the right place at the right time and there are no side effects.Let me explain nature’s wis- dom in a way that’s “closer to home”. Te n years ago something happened that changed my life forever. At the time,I’m a contractor for my fathers’ construction business, and life is good. But then,it happens…I develop a painful back condition known as “disc bulge/herniation”.In my case it comes on suddenly. The pain in my back gets so intense that I can’t bend over, lifting anything is impossible, and I can’t even put on my shoes. The shooting pain sometimes wakes me up in the middle of the night.I’m afraid that I’ll hurt my fathers’business if the disability continues. After considering surgery (that’s the only option, according to the doctor)I decide against it. But,there’s more… A friend of mine convinces me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then ‘adjusts’my spine (he tells me that there’s nerve pressure on the nerves in my low back). The adjustment doesn’t hurt,it actually feels good.I get relief, and shortly after I can help my father again.Oh,did I mention that this doctor is a chiropractor?Chiropractic works so well for me,and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’I see in his office, that I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened!” Now,as for my son Dominic,he’s the cute little guy in the photo. He is about the healthiest little guy I know.Yo u see,he had his first adjustment when he was days old and has had regular Chiropractic since. I see many children who suffer from ear infections, allergies, attention deficit disorder and asthma. Can you imagine a little kid not being able to play with their friends in gym class, because they’re afraid of having an asthma attack or because their allergies prevent them from doing so?That seems like a small thing but it makes a big difference to those families when their children’s health is restored. The beautiful woman on the left is my wife Princess. She knows enough to ask me to adjust her when she feels like she may be getting sick,or just to stay “tuned up.”That seems like a small thing, but it makes a huge difference to her. It’s strange how life is,because now people come to see me with their disc problems. Also they come to me with their headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neck pain,shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, just to name a few. Here’s what some patients had to say: “I have never felt better. For 10 years I had troubles trying to breathe through my nose. Now it’s perfect” George O. “Our family have been chiropractic patients for over a year. The results have been great.”D-Family “We were referred by a family friend, since then our entire family has been going for adjustments regularly and we must say we feel great!!”-Diane S. “My boys 10 and 11 yrs loves going to see the chiropractor.Their posture has been improved, they are more flexible, better at sports, improved co-ordination,calm and happier.S.K Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. Don’t take my word for it.Check out my Google Reviews. But I can’t really take all the credit…Yo u should know that I don’t heal anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Many people no longer have supplemental health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits are reduced. That’s where I come in.I have a significantly lower exam fee so that more people are able to afford the care they need.A whole week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit else-where.Another way to save…published, peer-reviewed research indicates that the immune system may be enhanced by chiropractic adjustments. The immune system is the system that helps the body fight colds, the flu,and many other sicknesses. Although all people respond differently to care, maybe you won’t be running off to the doctor as much once you start chiropractic. This is especially important if you are self-employed.Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. Yo u Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look,it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health.Be one of the first 20 people to make an appointment and receive my entire new patient exam for $37.That’s with x-rays,complete nerve, muscle and spinal exam….the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $150 elsewhere. But, please call right away because this offer expires on April 11,2014,and I don’t want you to miss out.By the way, further care is very affordable. Yo u see I’m not trying to seduce you to come see me with this low start up fee, then to only make it up with high fees after that.“Further care”is very important to consider when making your choice of doctor.High costs can add up very quickly. Great care at a great fee…Please,I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee.Yo u’ll get great care at a great fee.My qualifications… I’m a graduate of New Yo rk Chiropractic College. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may even know. After practicing in Pittsburgh PA for three years,I moved my practice to Ajax.I just have that low exam fee to help more people who need care. My assistant is Nancy and she is a really great person. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. This is in relation to the December ice storm, which created significant challeng- es for the power supplier. It was the larg- est power restoration in the utility’s histo- ry and Veridian is creating an action plan to see what could have been done better and to prepare for the next time. Michael Angemeer, Veridian’s president and CEO, spoke to Pickering council this week, saying a final report is expected in June. A number of residents attended the council meeting and it’s clear that, three months after the event, there’s still a lot of frustration related to Veridian’s response and its communication to those affected. We commend the front-line workers who worked long hours, during the holi- day season no less, to get the power back on. Meeting some of these people during the crisis, it was clear that they were tired but committed to getting the job done. That being said, just as residents got a wake-up call in terms of preparing for a power outage or other emergency, Verid- ian needs to assess its response. Communication was key during the out- age and will be if a similar situation occurs. Many residents who asked, ‘when will the power on my street be back?’, received no answer. Workers we spoke to during the crisis said they didn’t want to give even a broad estimate because they didn’t want to dis- appoint people. But residents obviously need to know as much as they can: will this potentially be a week-long event? If so, a family could plan to pack up and stay at a family mem- ber’s or a friend’s place. And providing that information, as much and as quickly as possible, is crucial. As Mr. Angemeer said at the meeting, “we did a lot of good work fixing things, but maybe a little more effort on up-front assessment might give customers a better idea of when their power will be back on.” Once their smart phones and other devices ran out of juice, residents were in the dark information wise. Radio updates were needed. And we submit that physi- cal, staffed, emergency information sta- tions, centrally located in each affected community, would have been extremely helpful. Understandably, Veridian’s focus was on getting the power back on as quickly and as safely as possible. Next time, as that work is going on, resi- dents will expect more information, better information and easily accessible infor- mation. Empower grandma to manage her pain To the editor: Pickering should join civilized municipali- ties in opposing policing Ottawa’s prohibi- tion on cannabis production. The government, using nonsensical anti- crime and drug abuse rhetoric, has revoked personal production waivers. Wise munici- palities won’t be wasting law enforcement budgets to ensure revoked production waivers are honoured. There’s no question that addictive, man- made drugs are a scourge on society. Our police officers battle illicit drugs’ real demons daily and with dignity. Grandma growing a few pot plants isn’t one them. And nothing naturally soothes her arthritic pain like homegrown cannabis. With mystical insight Health Canada feels some, such as personal production waiver holders, are selling their harvest for profit. Currently Ottawa has its “vices” and its “medications” confused. As of now medi- cal marijuana is only available from fed- eral government-licensed producers at the gang-enabling cost of $300 an ounce. It doesn’t make sense. To undermine the criminal black mar- ket, protect youth and decrease Canada’s health-care costs, remove the incentive to trade, a $20-an-ounce price would do this. Plus, it would empower grandma to have control over her pain and grow her own. Ken Nash Pickering Timely response from Pickering firefighters To the editor: I’d like to say thank you to the crews from Pickering Fire Services’ Bayly Street station house who responded to the recent car fire in my neighbour’s driveway on Foxglove Avenue. Thank you for saving my home; you arrived just in time before it went up in flames. Several of the crew remained on scene after the fire was out to assist in getting the car towed away, and were very helpful in making a tense situation bearable. The response time was fantastic. I ’m also grateful for the presence of the police officers who arrived from DRPS, and provided some much-needed assis- tance and guidance. The damage to my home is all external, and I’m thankful that nobody was hurt. I know that if the crews hadn’t shown up when they did, things would have turned out very differently. Mr. Ingram added the bot- tom of the ravine was another 30 to 40 feet below the woman. The woman had a cellphone and was able to call her mother, who in turn called 911, Mr. Ingram noted. Where she fell was between 400 to 500 feet back in the woods and firefighters had to carry in their gear. A firefighter tethered to a rope went down the embankment to bring the woman back up. It took firefighters about 20 to 25 min- utes to get the woman and dog up the hill, Mr. Ingram said. “The trail sloped down and that’s why the dog started to slide and the woman followed and went down,” Mr. Ingram said. She was taken to hospital with a pos- sible broken wrist and abrasions. The dog also needed help getting up the hill, Mr. Ingram noted. The woman’s mother came to the scene and took care of the dog while the woman was taken to hospital. “She was a very calm and thankful per- son. It probably couldn’t have gone any smoother than it did,” Mr. Ingram said of the rescue. “The bonus was she had a cell- phone and the sec- ond bonus was she was on a steep hill and didn’t drop her phone,” Mr. Ingram added. “We put cau- tion tape up in that area so no one does down that way.” The dog didn’t suffer any injuries. The ice storm restoration effort was the largest in Veridian’s history and cost about $1 million. If the Veridian board of directors gives the green light, the company will apply to the Ontario Energy Board for permission to recoup that cost -- likely though a surcharge paid by customers for about two years. Several councillors raised concerns about communication at the March 24 meeting. Councillor Peter Rodrigues noted many residents likely weren’t able to access the Internet once their devices ran out of bat- tery and questioned why there wasn’t more information from Veridian on the radio. “We heard a lot of things about Toronto ...I heard nary a peep about Pickering,” he said. The CEO said Veridian information wasn’t picked up by radio stations in the early days of the crisis. The company will be reaching out to local radio stations and also looking into the possibility of “breaking into” stations with emergency broadcasts. He said staff put 19 media releases up on the Veridian website, as well as tweeting information. About 65,000 Veridian customers in Pickering, Ajax, Clarington and Port Hope were impacted by the ice storm, which rep- resents more than 50 per cent of the cus- tomer base. Mr. Angemeer stressed 90 per cent of those affected had power restored within 48 hours. Those who weren’t so lucky included res- idents of McBrady Crescent in Pickering, who were without power for six days, from Dec. 22 to 27. Some likened the experience to living in a “war zone.” They have asked Veridian for compensa- tion for spoiled food, hotel bills and other expenses incurred during the lengthy out- age, as well as a report that looks specifically at what went wrong on their street. “It is not acceptable not to have power for six days,” said McBrady Crescent resident Dragos Nita at the March 24 meeting. “You pay for a service and you have an expecta- tion.” He asked why Veridian, which makes mil- lions in annual revenue, couldn’t spend more on restoration if it meant getting everyone’s lights back on faster. “If they spent, let’s say $2 million, maybe we could have had power like the other 90 per cent of Pickering, in two days,” Mr. Nita noted. Mr. Angemeer said in his 28-year career in the industry, he has never heard of a utility reimbursing residents for lost food or other inconveniences stemming from a power outage. “Utilities normally do not provide com- pensation for lost power,” he said. “The only time our insurance company will actually honour a claim and pay it is if there negli- gence by our field staff.” Overseas volunteer information session in Pickering PICKERING -- Cuso International, a non-profit international development agency, is searching for qualified vol- unteers interested in combatting global poverty overseas. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland Ethiopia a haven for raptors Thirty-four red-shouldered hawks, 68 red- tails and a whopping 361 turkey vultures. The spring flood of returning raptors is well under way, judging by the numbers count- ed last Saturday at the hawk watch atop the Niagara escarpment at Grimsby, the best place in southern Ontario to view them passing. Raptors migrate by day, and I’ve been getting reports from excited readers throughout Durham for a few weeks now. I have an added reason to be excited about migrating hawks and vultures this year, a personal reason. On my birding trip to Ethi- opia in January I saw more raptor species than I had ever heard of or dreamed existed. It seemed that half the winged predators of Eurasia were wintering in the highlands of the Horn of Africa, or on the open plains of the Great Rift Valley. They will be heading back north to their breeding grounds now, many making their way around the east end of the Mediterranean, riding on ther- mals rising from the land. And this spring I can picture them: Eurasian and lesser kes- trels, pallid and Montagu’s harriers, com- mon buzzards, steppe, booted and imperial eagles, and even short-toed snake eagles. They’ll be leaving behind a host of resi- dent raptors we also saw in January: fox kes- trels and Lanner falcons, African harrier hawks and bateleurs, mountain and Auger buzzards. Four species of goshawks, seven more of eagles and two more snake eagles. Plus the dramatic cinnamon-white-and- black African fish-eagle, common around lakes and rivers. Perhaps the most impressive memories for this total novice to African birds were of vultures. It seemed every time we looked up into the sky there was a hooded vulture floating over, a slate-and-brown bird slight- ly larger than our turkey vultures. But with them could be Egyptian vultures, white with all-black flight feathers, or white-headed or white-backed vultures, both with their own white-on-dark markings. Or larger, sturdier lappet-faced, Rüppell’s or griffon vultures, each with a unique patterned plumage, a confusing kettle to sort out and identify, pun intended. Of all the great scavengers that clean up carcasses across Ethiopia and beyond, one is so distinctive it’s in a genus of its own. Among the largest birds in the world, with a wingspan of three metres, the buff- and-black-coloured lammergeier inhab- its remote high mountain ranges where, among the crags and cliffs, it feeds on bones picked clean by other predators. With its strong talons it carries even big thigh bones high into the air and drops them on rocks below, splitting them into bite-size pieces. Given their highly acidic intestinal tract, pH of 1, they can digest whole bones in 24 hours. We watched lammergeiers from a cliff- top along the dramatic gorge of the Jemma River, a tributary of the Blue Nile. It was the thrill of a lifetime. Nature queries: mcarney@interlinks.net of 905-725-2116. -- Durham outdoors writer Margaret Car- ney has more than 3,000 species on her life list of birds, seen in far-flung corners of the planet. Margaret Carney The Great Outdoors See a video of Peanut on Facebook Kristen’s Kritters Kristen Calis Reporter / kcalis@durhamregion.com / 905-579-4400 #2240 facebook.com/NewsDurhamKristensKrittersPet oral hygiene takes work Last month, I wrote about the importance of oral health in pets, and realized I was neglecting my own pet’s mouth problems. At our last regular vet checkup, my vet- erinarian said my little cat, Henri, was having some problems with her teeth -- she had mild tartar and gingivitis, which wasn’t currently severe but would worsen and mean possible tooth extractions in the future. She needed to get her teeth scaled and cleaned. I don’t want her to need any tooth extrac- tions, and if unchecked, dental problems can lead to serious health issues. So her teeth have been successfully cleaned, but at her follow-up, my vet basi- cally said we’re not out of the woods yet, and there are things I can do at home to keep her teeth clean: brushing; a special- ty food for helping keep the plaque off her teeth; and/or HealthyMouth, a solution that you put into your pet’s water. I’ve opted to attempt brushing and try HealthyMouth -- I’m afraid my other very hungry cat, Kinsey, will eat the food, and she has to be on a special diet for crystals. But apparently it’s a bit of a transition. First, HealthyMouth is green, and cats get freaked out about that. So far it’s very dilut- ed and hopefully my cats continue to drink it as it gets more concentrated over time. My vet told me if I start brushing, I have to do it regularly, at last once every two days. My friend says her dogs are fine with get- ting their teeth brushed. She uses a bunch of different flavours of pet toothpaste (we cannot use human toothpaste on pets, it’s dangerous) and she lets him chomp on the brush afterward. For cats, I’m wary, so I searched for tips online and found some that seem doable. The first tip, which my friend also recom- mends, is to start young. That’s out the win- dow for me with Henri, but a good idea for those looking to adopt a kitten or a puppy. So with adult cats, here’s what drsfos- tersmith.com says: First, it’s important to get your cat used to you putting your fingers in her mouth. So dip it into tuna water or some other cat-favoured liquid and let her lick. Next, start rubbing your cat’s gums with your finger. Then, take a piece of gauze, dip it into the liquid and gently rub the teeth in a circular motion. Repeat this session until she’s comfortable, and remember to praise her a lot. Now, to move onto an actual brush, dental sponge or pad, let your cat lick something tasty off of the brush or pad so she gets used to the texture. Now, it’s time to add pet toothpaste. First let your cat lick some off your finger, and then apply some to your cat’s gum line with your finger to get them used to it. Praise her. Now to start brushing, continue with the happy voice. At first, you may just want to brush one or both upper canine teeth (the large ones in front). When your cat accepts having several teeth brushed, slowly increase the number of teeth you are brushing and praise a lot. Please, wish me luck. There will be advance polls every day in the week leading up to Monday, Oct. 27, the day of the election, with the exception of Friday, Oct. 24. During a recent meeting of council’s gen- eral government committee, clerk Marty de Rond, when asked how the number of advance polls compared to the 2010 elec- tion, said, “It’s a very different situation with online voting and the type of access people need.” Ajax is using Internet-based voting for the election, so voters can cast a ballot at any time from 10 a.m. on Oct. 20 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 27. Deputy clerk Nicole Wellsbury said there are “slightly fewer advance polls than 2010 and shorter hours. What we’re offering is almost borderline excessive.” Ward 4 local Councillor Pat Brown said, “Seniors need to have access to polls” yet there are fewer hours. In the 2010 election, polls at seniors’ res- idences were open for four hours, while this year, they will only be open for two hours. Ms. Wellsbury noted the schedule for special polls -- those at seniors’ facilities -- is “almost exactly the same as last time.” Having the special polls open for two hours “was done in consultation with the facilities. We found that longer was exces- sive,” she added. “It’s sufficient. We’ve talked with the facilities and families. We’re comfortable with what we’re offering,” Mr. de Rond said. “We’re definitely trying to duplicate past practices. It will be OK.” The special polls will be open on Oct. 23 at Winbourne Park Long-Term Care Centre and Ballycliffe Lodge Long-Term Care Residence, and on Oct. 24 for West- wood Manor, Harwood Manor and Ashley Manor. The special polls are for residents of those facilities. NEW YEAR. NEW WAGJAG. EatRight Ontario 1-877-510-510-2 Losses totalled ‘thousands’ says witness at Ajax man’s fraud trial Crown alleges Ponzi scheme Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- A witness has testified he lost thousands of dollars he sunk into startup companies recommended by an Ajax investment consultant now on trial for fraud. George Foster said Wednesday he resorted to suing Roger Schoer when he received no returns on his investments, and refund cheques he got from Mr. Schoer bounced. “I realized I had been defrauded of thousands of dollars -- tens of thou- sands of dollars -- with nothing to show for it,” Mr. Foster, a retired teacher, testi- fied. “Mr. Schoer ... was not ethically deal- ing with us and had no respect for our hard-earned dollars,” he said. Mr. Schoer has pleaded not guilty to fraud over $5,000, uttering a forged doc- ument and assault, charges laid after an investigation by Durham police into complaints made by former clients. Prosecutor Mitchell Flagg said Mr. Scho- er encouraged clients to pursue what he represented as potentially lucrative “off book” investments in companies that had not begun to be publicly traded. Mr. Schoer was actually running a Ponzi scheme, sometimes using funds from new investors to pay off those who wanted to cash out, Mr. Flagg said. In some cases -- like Mr. Foster’s -- the cheques provided by Mr. Schoer bounced, court heard. Mr. Foster said he invested in several ventures recommended by Mr. Scho- er, including an emerging tech com- pany. He said that although he handed over thousands of dollars he received no receipts or stock certificates, and was alarmed when he learned there was no record of his having invested in the company. He demanded a pay-out and received a series of cheques from Mr. Schoer, all of which were returned because of insufficient funds, he testified. In late 2007 he launched two law- suits, naming Mr. Schoer and a lawyer as defendants. The action involving the lawyer -- Mr. Foster sued for $15,000 -- was settled when he was offered a size- able chunk of stock in the tech compa- ny. The other claim, against Mr. Schoer for $9,750, went to trial in small claims court. “I was awarded the judgment,” Mr. Foster said. “Mr. Schoer was not pres- ent.” Mr. Foster said he has not received the money the court ordered Mr. Schoer to pay him. He claimed that overall, he lost between $40,000 and $50,000 in invest- ments with Mr. Schoer. That number was challenged by defence lawyer Paul Alexander, who noted that cancelled cheques entered as evidence in this trial amount to $24,750, the amount recovered when Mr. Foster sued. “That’s the total I had an account- ing of,” replied Mr. Foster, who said he was unable to recover cheques or other records relating to other invest- ments. Mr. Foster also acknowledged that he realized he was entering risky territory when he invested in unlisted startups, with the possibility of no dividend if the ventures failed. “You understood none of this was guaranteed to work out, right?” Mr. Alexander asked. “True,” replied Mr. Foster. The trial, before Superior Court Justice Cory Gilmore, continues in Oshawa. FR E E eB o o k s a t d u r h a m r e g i o n . c o m With Better Go Getter we make shopping simple! At the March 24 meet- ing, fellow Whitby Trust- ee Mark McGowan nom- inated Trustee Leahy for the chairman position, and when no other trust- ees were brought forward, Trustee Leahy assumed the role. “I’m excited to serve in this capacity, just really looking forward to working with the whole board and representing the interests of the students and the community at this level,” said Trustee Leahy. He said he’s grateful for the nomination, and is dedicated to advocating for a strong Catholic school system. “I truly feel that we are all united at this table with this common goal,” he said. His biggest priorities in his time as chair- man are ensuring the five-year strategic plan is delivered, and that the board deliv- ers a strong, responsible budget. Brokerage P I C K E R I N G A D V E R T I S I N G F E A T U R E During these tough economic times, businesses need an affordable way to advertise their products and services and create a name for themselves in the community. The Focus on Business advertising feature was designed to help businesses succeed at an affordable price. The feature has five zones: Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington, and advertisers can choose to run in any number of them. If they want to target a specific area, they can choose one zone or if they want broad coverage they can choose to run in all five. Advertising packages are available for six weeks, 18 weeks, 36 weeks and 52 weeks, and discounted rates are available for longer-term commitments. “I have nothing but good things to say about the Focus on Business feature,” says Wayne Hutchison, owner of Durham Windows and Doors, who has been advertising in the feature for 15 years. Having an ad in the newspaper every week helps businesses build recognition. Readers who see the advertisement on a regular basis become familiar with the business. Running in the section long term shows potential customers that the business is consistent and is there for the long term. The feature includes a 3” wide by 1.5” deep ad, but the best part is the free editorial that comes with each six week run. The articles will talk in-depth about the business and can include a photograph or image. Many advertisers find that the articles provide a surge in phone calls and sales. The articles allow readers to learn more about the businesses, including detailed information about the products and services they offer. Many advertisers have seen a dramatic increase in their bottom line because of advertising in the section. For more information on the Focus on Business feature or to book an ad, please call Connie Baker at (905) 579-4400 ext. 2271 or email cbaker@durhamregion.com. In 2013 the Region started work on the Brock Road-Brougham bypass, a three- year project with a price tag of $13.5 mil- lion. The Region’s 2014 roads program will include more improvements to Brock, including plans to widen the section south of Rossland Road to the CP Rail overpass. Construction to widen Brock from Hwy. 401 to Kingston Road will also be done in 2014 as the first phase of a three-year, $10-million project. Mr. Anderson also pointed to the Metro- linx overpass on Whites Road, which will be rehabilitated at a cost of $5.2 mil- lion. He said the Region will invest more than $3 million in road rehabilitation projects in Pickering this year and spend about $1 million on traffic lights at 11 locations in Pickering. Councillors concerned about electricity rates Pickering council has endorsed a Feb. 10 resolution from the Town of Arnprior, which urges the Ontario Energy Board “in the strongest possible way” not to approve any further electricity rate increases. Councillor Doug Dickerson said some- thing is “seriously out of whack” with Ontario’s rates, stressing that competitive rates and reliable power are essential for attracting business to the province. The resolution from Arnprior says it is estimated that Ontario’s rates will increase by about 50 per cent in the next five years. It raises concerns about the impact on business as well as residents with low or fixed incomes. “Something has to be done here,” noted Councillor Bill McLean. Police communications tower planned for Pickering A 60-metre high telecommunication tower is planned for Rosebank Road in Pickering as part of the NextGen Radio Communica- tions project, a partnership between Durham Regional Police, the Region of Durham and Durham’s eight municipalities. The project will provide Durham’s public safety agencies with a shared two-way radio system. The NextGen project is expected to be operational in June. We exercise at least 30 muscles when we smile. Every month you grow a brand new outer layer of skin...”a new you!”. www.medindia.net Q. I need a hearing test. Who should I see? A.Audiologists hold Masters/Doctorate degrees in Audiology, the science of hearing. Our clinics are staffed with the most Audiologists in Durham. Q. What should I look for in hearing aids? A. Audiologists are the best trained to help you choose what will be right for you. Hearing aids are medical devices. They are not a commodity that can be shopped around for but rather need to be prescribed. We prescribe appropriate hearing aids based on a thorough hearing test, ear canal size and shape, and lifestyle needs using only the latest hearing technology. Q. Why is it so important that I carefully choose my HEARING Clinic? A.“It’s not just about ears, it’s about life.”Hearing aids are a major investment to improve quality of life. An active person, enjoying restaurants, family gatherings, will need technology that has good noise reduction circuitry. There is no point in buying hearing aids that can only be worn in quiet settings just because they were on sale. Q. What else should I look for when choosing my HEARING Clinic? A. In addition to qualifications, service is most important. The Clinic should be open full time with an achieved measure of customer satisfaction. Our clinics have been voted #1 for 13 years in a row. The clinic should be trustworthy. Our Clinics have been proudly serving Durham for the past 27 years. We can guarantee that we will be here tomorrow as we are today. Make the right decision with our Audiologists and Hearing Instrument Specialist to help you hear better. You can count on us. Oshawa Little Theatre presents The Secret Garden, the musical, March 27 to April 12. "The musical version of the classic novel The Secret Garden takes place in a lonely manor house in 1906 England where Archibald Graven yearns for his beautiful late wife," states the OLT web- site. "He blames his crippled son, Colin, for his wife’s death. Their quiet routine is turned upside down when young Mary Lennox, a rich, spoiled child, is sent to live with them. While living at the manor house, Mary discovers a secret walled garden hidden in the grounds and releases the magic adventures locked inside, changing their lives forever." The cast features Geoff Coulter, Erin Collins, Bryan Stanish, Jason Butler Burns, Stephanie Ferraro and John Kerr of Oshawa, Nicholas McAllister, Kathy Knight, Chris Francom and Steven Lon- gauer of Whitby, Lance Pask and Gabby Ally of Clarington, Phil Cook, Aman- da Cook and Jeremy Cook of Pickering, Rachel Wood of Ajax, Devin Cecchet- to, Kelly Preeper and Steven Sue Paul of Toronto and Wendy Pearson of Ponty- pool. You can buy tickets online at www. oshawalittletheatre.com, in person at the OLT Box Office (check the website for hours) and at the United Way kiosk in the Oshawa Centre. Oshawa Little Theatre is at 62 Russett Ave., Oshawa. OSHAWA -- Phil Cook, Nicholas McAllister, Devin Cecchetto and Erin Collins are fea- tured in the production of Oshawa Little Theatre’s The Secret Garden running March 27 to April 12. Jason Liebregts / Metroland It’s like this WHITBY -- Jennifer Pappas of Pickering, who plays Chloe on Family Channel’s The Next Step, led a dance workshop for The Travelling Stage at Westminster United Church during March break. Brittany Raymond, Riley on the show, also led workshops and they were in such demand that a second day was added. Alexandra Beaton also appears on the show. Jason Liebregts / Metroland Oshawa Opera presents ‘very Zen’ work this weekend Mahler’s The Song of the Earth March 30 Mike Ruta mruta@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- Kristine Dandavino knew the place wouldn’t be empty, but even she was surprised at how many people turned out for Carmen. Oshawa Opera presented the work last month at Kingsview United Church. “It was jam-packed; we still had room, but not much,” says the mezzo-soprano and founder of the group. “I was expecting a lot of people, but not that many. And people from all over Durham and even outside of Durham.” Next up for Oshawa Opera is Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) on March 30, also at Kings- view United. And while the work isn’t the most well-known and straddles the line between opera and sym- phony, it has a unique standing in the music world. Conductor/com- poser Leonard Bernstein once said he found it dif- ficult to speak about it because he loved it so much. Dandavino first heard it when she was 13 years old. “I remember being floored by the colours,” she says, describing it as “very Zen.” Das Lied von der Erde is made up of six songs ranging in length from three minutes to almost half an hour. The Austrian composer had been through a very difficult time when he thought of the work in 1908. The previous year he had been forced to resign as director of the Vienna Court Opera, his daughter Maria died and Mahler was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. Mahler admired Hans Bethge’s book of ancient Chinese poetry, Die chinesische Flote (The Chinese Flute), and picked seven pieces as the basis of his compositions. Dandavino says “you can really hear his anguish” in the work, quickly adding it’s not a complete downer. The performance is at 3 p.m. and the church is at 505 Adelaide Ave. E., Oshawa. For tickets, visit oshawaopera.com, call Dandavino at 905- 995-2847 or get tickets at Wilson and Lee Music Store in Oshawa. Tickets will also be available at the door. Despite playing two much stronger games following a 6-0 blowout in the opener of their best-of-seven OHL Eastern Conference quarter-final, the Steelheads find themselves in a 3-0 series hole after a devastating 6-5 double overtime loss Tuesday night at the Hershey Centre. Josh Sterk finally ended the game 11:23 into the second OT, one-timing a pass from Dylan Smoskowitz past an exhaust- ed Spencer Martin, who faced 64 shots. The Generals now have a chance to close out the series in a sweep Thursday night back in Mississauga. “You don’t want to play any more games than you have to, but that team’s not going away,” said Generals coach D.J. Smith after the game. “They played us tooth and nail all the way, two overtimes, obviously they could go either way. We’ve got to play a better 60 minutes.” The match-up, featuring the first-place Generals against the eighth-place Steel- heads, appeared to be a laugher in the making when Oshawa opened with a dominant performance at home last Fri- day night. But the Steelheads have pushed back hard and have taken the past two games to overtime, albeit with nothing to show for it. They could easily have evened the series Sunday at the General Motors Centre had Josh Burnside’s overtime shot gone in rather than ring off the post. Instead, Cole Cassels scored the winner shortly thereaf- ter with Burnside in the penalty box, giv- ing the Generals a 3-2 decision and two home-ice victories to start. The Steelheads, despite having the league’s worst offence, showed plenty of spark Tuesday on their home ice, jump- ing out to a 3-1 lead and later fighting back from a 5-3 deficit to force extra time. The Generals dominated the shot clock, as they have done throughout the series, with a 64-33 advantage, including 22-5 in overtime. AJAX -- Ajax boxer Brandon Cook, shown training at the Durham Boxing Academy, is geraing up for a May 3 bout at the Hershey Centre against former Motor City Boxing Club teammate Phil Rose of Whitby. Ron Piertoniro / Metroland File Photo Ajax’s Cook ready to put perfect record on the line Boxing champ set to face Whitby’s Phil Rose May 3 at Hershey Centre Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- In the eyes of boxer Brandon ‘Bad Boy’ Cook, there’s a big difference between training and fighting. For the past five months he has been doing a lot of one and none of the other, but all of that is going to change on May 3. The Ajax resident will step back into the ring at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga to face Whitby’s Phil ‘The Assassin’ Rose in a NABA Canadian middleweight cham- pionship bout sched- uled for 10 rounds. Cook, the Canadian light middleweight champion, will move up from his custom- ary 154 pounds to 160 to fight Rose. “For almost three years I was fighting every three months,” says Cook of the busy schedule he has maintained since turning pro in 2011. “I didn’t get to fight in February. I’ve been working on a lot of different things lately. I’ve been at the gym the whole time. “But not to get in there and fight kind of sucks.” The 27 year old has built a record of 12-0-0 with seven knockouts over his career, and is coming off a spectacular 2013. Cook won the light middleweight title in June, stopping veteran Fitz Van- derpool in the first round, and three months later, defended it against Tebor Brosch, winning a unanimous decision at a fight held at Casino Rama. Cook continued on a successful path by keeping busy to close out the year, beating Italy’s Luca Michael Pasqua, his handlers throwing in the towel after four rounds of the November fight. Since then, no fights, just training. Rose (5-2-1, 4KO) is coming into the fight full of con- fidence after pull- ing off an upset over two-time Olympian Adam Trupish, win- ning by technical knockout in the fifth round of a fight held in Edmonton. Cook figures he will be giving up some size when he moves up six pounds for the fight. “Six pounds is a big difference. You will see that he will probably be a little big- ger than me,” he says. “That doesn’t mean anything. I’ll just have to stick to our game plan and do what we have to do to win.” The Ajax Boxing Club member expects to close out the year with a couple of fights, probably in September and November. ‘‘ I’ve been working on a lot of different things lately.’ Brandon Cook du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 2 7 , 2 0 1 4 25 AP REAL ESTATE SALES We're Hiring! *We pay course fees *Licensing Training & Support *7 Locations Considering, Licensed or In course, contact… David Brereton 1-888-472-2767 david-brereton@coldwellbanker.ca www.BecomeARealtor.ca *Conditions apply* Coldwell Banker R.M.R. Crawford & Sons: Fixing Basement Leaks Right the First Time A leaking basement is frustrating and expensive – and it’s not something you want to have to fix repeatedly. That’s why it’s best to bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and repair it right the first time. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to 15,000 homes in Durham region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.” Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping,” he says. Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He says homeowners who invest in their foundations will save money in the long term. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation. For more information, call Gordon Crawford at (905) 686-6880. WITH OVER 30 YRS EXPERIENCE WE WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM! 905-686-6880 WATERPROOFING 10 YEAR WARRANTY!FREE ESTIMATES!
