Roy Singh is proposing to build a cricket stadium at the northeast corner of Brock Road and Hwy. 407 in north Pickering, close to the proposed airport site. He is in talks with City of Pickering development staff to narrow down parcels of land for purchase or lease. City staff wouldn’t clarify which lands are being consid- ered or who owns them. When contacted for informa- tion, Fiaz Jadoon, an economic development co-ordinator with the City, confirmed in an e-mail that “City of Pickering staff are investigating and researching various options for Mr. Singh’s proposal,” however he said “we do not have any further informa- tion.” See ENTREPRENEUR page 2 Read the full story page 8 Durham woman never giving up the fight DURHAM -- Eva Majcher doesn’t have to slip on a pair of boxing gloves or climb into the octagon with those versed in mixed mar- tial arts to prove she’s a fighter. Copyright ©2013 Mr. Singh is the CEO and founder of the Canadian Premier League T20, an in- the-works professional cricket league that aims to mix Canadian athletes with international players. He has lobbied several GTA municipali- ties in an attempt to secure space to build a venue for his league, with no luck. At one point there was even a request to turn the Rogers Centre field into a cricket pitch for several weeks a year. Mr. Singh, who is also the CEO of CINRO, a Toronto-based gold explora- tion company, says Pickering is “on the ball” and now appears to be his best bet. “We want this to be the hub for cricket in Canada,” he says of the proposed sta- dium. The proposal is for a 35,000-seat dome stadium that would be used for a CPL T20 cricket tournament over seven or eight weeks every August and September. The tournament would be timed to coincide with other large GTA events such as the Canadian National Exhibi- tion. The rest of the year, the venue would be available for other events. “Ontario is such a multicultural prov- ince, there is definitely a market for this,” Mr. Singh says, noting a feasibility study is underway. He says Twenty 20 or “T20” cricket is a “much more exciting and sexy” version of the game, clocking in at about two-and- a-half hours per game, making it more fan-friendly. Traditional cricket matches can go on for an entire day, or even several days. Mr. Singh says the CPL T20 will be mod- eled after the Indian Premier League, and believes it could generate $500 million to $1 billion over the next decade. Pickering councillor concerned by airport wording in federal budget Document suggests airport consultation will focus on business community Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- This week’s federal bud- get includes only a small reference to the Pickering airport issue -- but a local coun- cillor says the wording speaks volumes. The document notes more than 600 pub- lic submissions have been received and says the government plans to hold a series of stakeholder roundtables in the coming months “to ensure development benefits local businesses.” Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles says that suggests only business stake- holders will be included. “That’s a good step, but it doesn’t seem to include the broad consultation we’re looking for,” he said. “They shouldn’t just be talking to people who support an air- port about the bene- fits of an airport, they should be talking to everyone.” Last June Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced that the government will ear- mark about 8,700 acres of federally owned land in north Pickering for an airport, while 5,000 acres will be set aside for the creation of the Rouge National Urban Park. Another 4,900 acres will be used for “regional economic development.” On Jan. 27 Pickering council unanimous- ly supported a motion from Coun. Pickles that calls for an “open and transparent” process around the proposed airport. Coun. Pickles said its unlikely the feds had a chance to review the motion from Pickering before the federal budget came down, and is hopeful that the consultation process will be broadened. Ajax man charged in restaurant robbery Pickering Subway outlet robbed in November DURHAM -- An Ajax man faces a slew of charges following a November robbery of a Pickering restaurant. Durham Regional Police arrested the man on Tuesday, Jan. 28 and charged him in con- nection with a robbery of a Subway outlet. When arrested, the suspect had 15.6 grams of cocaine and 5.3 grams of marijuana, with a combined street value of $1,200, police said. Damiane Sergeant, 25, of Seward Cres- cent, has been charged with robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, wearing a disguise, possession of weapons danger- ous during the commission of an offence, using an imitation firearm during commis- sion of an offence, possession of a firearm contrary to order, assault with intent to resist arrest, possession for the purpose of traffick- ing cocaine, possession of a controlled sub- stance - marijuana and three counts of fail- ing to comply with recognizance. When Alexander Broad started a Twitter account on Feb. 4 to poke fun at the myri- ad of problems at the Sochi Olympics, he expected to grab a few dozen followers. By the next morning his @SochiProblems account had 11,000 followers and as of Fri- day, 343,000 people were following. That’s more followers than the official Sochi Olympics Twitter account. “It shows you how fast things spread on social media...I really couldn’t believe it,” says Mr. Broad, 20. The second-year student says he was sit- ting in class at Centennial College on Feb. 4, scanning breaking news and Twitter when he came across photos Tweeted by journal- ists covering the Olympics. “I thought it would be a good laugh,” he says of his spontaneous decision to adopt the handle @SochiProblems and re-tweet the unbelievable mishaps coming out of Sochi. His 200-plus tweets have included athletes breaking down bathroom doors, a journal- ist whose hotel room lock was changed and brownish-yellow water coming out of hotel room taps. The past week has been a whirlwind for Mr. Broad, who has become an overnight media sensation bombarded with interview requests. He was even referred to as a “mad genius” in USA Today, the largest circulation newspa- per in the U.S. “Being a journalist you’re usually the one trying to get the story, now all of a sudden people want my story,” Mr. Broad says. “It’s been so crazy.” He hopes the experience will help with his ultimate goal of working in sports journal- ism, noting that his college professors think the Twitter hype is “pretty great.” PICKERING -- Alexander Broad has become an overnight media sensation thanks to his @SochiProblems Twitter account. He has amassed 343,000 followers since starting the account on Feb. 4. Sabrina Byrnes / Metroland Sergeant Nancy van Rooy reflects on a rewarding career JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- She began her career as a recruit fresh out of school in 1987. And eventually, Sergeant Nancy van Rooy become the face of the Durham Regional Police Service. Acting as Durham’s media officer has been just one stop in a varied career that has seen Sgt. van Rooy investigating murders, shoot- ings and sexual assaults, among other inci- dents. And now that her term in the media office has ended, she looks ahead to her next challenge. It’s been a rewarding career for the Missis- sauga native, who chose policing after study- ing psychology and criminology at the Uni- versity of Toronto. Sgt. van Rooy was the only woman among 13 hires in late 1987. “I never doubted my abilities,” she said. “I knew intellectually I could manage. I knew physically I could manage.” Early in her career the officer seized an opportunity when the Durham service began training scenes of crime officers (SOCOs), a relatively new concept at the time. Front-line constables are trained to act as forensics spe- cialists, gathering photographic and hard evi- dence from crime scenes. She excelled and was involved in numerous cases, both at the beginning, when crimes occurred, and at the conclusion, when her evidence formed an essential part of the case for the prosecution in court. Sgt. van Rooy’s reputation for hard work and attention to detail was noticed by her superiors, and she was called upon to mentor new recruits, an assignment she partic- ularly enjoyed. “That was probably my best work,” she said in a recent interview. “Helping people get off to a good start.” As she advanced through the ranks and was promoted to detec- tive, she found herself in another challenging post, investigating sexual assault and child abuse cases. “That’s a highly sensitive task, to be that first officer to respond to sexual assault vic- tims,” Sgt. van Rooy said. “And it gave me an appreciation for the scope and span of inves- tigations. They’re large puzzles, and they shouldn’t be put together too hastily.” Sgt. van Rooy continued her career working in Criminal Investigations Bureaus in Oshawa and Pickering-Ajax, and was also seconded to assist with homicide investigations. Her work helped lead to convictions in cases such as the killings of Ramesh Partap and Karl O’Reggio. During her career Sgt. van Rooy has seen the number of female offi- cers grow, a welcome reflection of the community Durham police serve. She feels the service offers women the opportunity to grow and advance, a belief that was bol- stered in 2007 when Sherry White- way (now retired) was sworn in as deputy chief. Sgt. van Rooy said the experience she amassed work- ing such assignments was of great assistance when, five years ago, she assumed duties as Durham’s media officer. “I believe that 21 years on the front line made me very ready for the media post,” she said. “I’ve walked the walk.” It’s a demanding job that requires Sgt. van Rooy to manage and respond to dozens of media requests on any given day -- and even more when a major incident occurs. She’s made it a point to be fair, dealing with each request for information as it arrives, and to be accurate. Sgt. van Rooy recognizes the impor- tance of the relationship between police and the media. While the press depends on the media officer to supply information in a timely manner, the service often relies on the media to deliver its message as well. “We need to have a fair-minded, open rela- tionship with the media,” she said. “And it becomes more of a relationship the stronger the rapport becomes.” Balancing work with private life has always been important for Sgt. van Rooy, who is mar- ried with three daughters. She’s long been an active volunteer, earning honours that included a City of Pickering Volunteer Award in 2001, a Woman of Distinction Award from Durham Region in 2003, and being nominat- ed for Flare Magazine’s National Volunteer of the Year Award in 2008. Sgt. van Rooy finished her stint as media officer Feb. 7. She looks forward to resuming her career as a detective in the service’s West Division. Cultural and traditional transitions are some of the major changes a person has to go through. South Asia has its own traditions and cul- tural values as every other region. In Asian countries like Pakistan and India, it’s tradi- tional to say: ‘No, thank you’ when you are a guest and your host is offering you some- thing to eat. This ‘no-means-yes’ is a cultural tradi- tion and the host knows it. He will still set up a table, according to the time, and insist the guest share in the meal. The guest, who earlier was saying ‘no’, will happily eat everything on the table, ignoring what he had said earlier. Sometimes, these cultural differences stand in conflict with the values of the other country to where he moves. Here’s what happened to a man who immigrated to Canada from south Asia. It was his first day in Canada and his host was Canadian. When it came time for din- ner, the host asked the guest: “Would you like to have dinner?” In accordance with the guest’s cultural background, the answer to this question was: “No, thank you” although this still meant ‘yes’. But the Canadian host interpreted the answer according to his own cultural values, which meant his guest didn’t want to eat, as Canadians are straight and candid. Later, the host asked if he would like some snacks, and though hungry he was still under his traditional influence and replied “no, thank you” again. The host never gave him anything to eat and soon it was time to go to bed. The next morning when it was breakfast the Canadian host asked his guest if would like to have breakfast. Guess what? The guest didn’t say ‘no’ this time. “Yes, please” was the answer, as he could not remain hungry any more. One starving night gave him a glimpse into Canadian ways and cultural differenc- es. -- Ailla Shahid is a Whitby resident Ailla Shahid Guest Column Cultures Mirabel: Let’s review To the editor: Re: ‘Preserving the land that feeds us’, guest column, durhamregion.com, Feb. 5, 2014. I do support preserving the land, however it seems essential information on Mirabel was left out. I point out the following facts: 1. Mirabel Airport supports (and has for many years) cargo and charter flights, air- craft and engine testing, as well as mainte- nance services. 2. Mirabel Airport is considered an aero- space magnet for research and develop- ment and is currently in an expansion mode. Bombardier Aerospace houses its CRJ and new C-series assembly lines on the property. Bell Helicopter manufactures all its commercial helicopters at a plant locat- ed on the airport premises. In August 2007, Air Medic, which provides air ambulance services, also moved its base from St. Hubert Airport to Mirabel. Its main employers (outside of building staff) are FedEx, Bombardier, Bell and Pratt and Whitney. In addition, there are 3,600 direct employees. With indirect employ- ment, the total count of employees exceed- ed 3,700 people in 2010 (admservices.ca, 2010). In December 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the return of 4,450 hectares of farmland to 125 farmers. We must trust that there will be dialogue between the government and its citizens. A special video tribute to the beloved former South African president and anti- Apartheid symbol, who died in December on the eve of his 90th birthday, is planned for this weekend as part of a larger celebra- tion being presented by Cultural Expres- sions Art Gallery, the Town of Ajax and other local interests. The event’s theme, ‘Be True to Self’, is a perfect backdrop to the memory of Mr. Mandela and features workshops, displays and art, a sampling of Caribbean cuisine and a keynote address by Justice of the Peace Martha De Gannes, a respected vet- eran judge in Durham Region and Toronto. Black History Month has been celebrated annually since 1995, created to highlight the many achievements of African Cana- dians, to raise awareness and educate the larger public, and to acknowledge their rich contribution to Canada’s history. It also cre- ated for African Canadians an opportunity to formally mark their shared heritage, cel- ebrate cultures, and promote fellowship. And the event’s focus this year about being true to one’s self is both important and timely, reminding us all about the value of self-confidence, pride, responsibil- ity to self and to community, achievement, leadership. In the spirit of fellowship and inclusive- ness, this weekend’s event is open to all and, notes a release from event organizers, promotes a “universal message of under- standing, tolerance and goodwill to all peo- ple.” This weekend’s Ajax event is certainly one of the larger celebrations planned, but some local libraries have displays in hon- our of Black History Month, and knowl- edgeable librarians would be happy to rec- ommend and assist in providing materials that can educate, entertain and celebrate the aims of the month-long event. Also this weekend, residents are invited to a special presentation from the Apostol- ic Pentecostal Church in Pickering called ‘A View of Fatherlessness in Black Communi- ties’ as part of Black History Month. It runs Feb. 22 at 755 Oklahoma Dr. in Pickering starting at 4 p.m. It’s Black History Month in Durham Region. There is much to look back on in recognition and much to look forward to in anticipation. That’s something to celebrate. A few w ords of comfortable wisdom ‘Might as well get comfortable.’ I came across this phrase recently and, for some reason, it has stuck with me. It’s been rat- tling around my head for a few days, trying to get my attention. Might as well get com- fortable. I like it. Seems like something I’d like to get tattooed on me somewhere. That is, if I were comfortable getting tattooed. Like a lot of simple but important state- ments, there’s more going on here than first meets the eye. Life, I think most of us would agree, can be challenging, even dif- ficult at times. Throw in a cold, dark, icy winter and it can seem downright daunt- ing. So, what’s a person to do? Well, might as well get comfortable. If we stopped, took a moment, at the beginning of every day, or at the onset of any chore, project or responsibility or in the face of any difficulty or trial ... and pon- dered that simple phrase, ‘Might as well get comfortable’, I wonder what effect it might have? Might as well get comfortable. Might as well find something to like here, something to take the edge off, something to sneak a little peace in with. In other words, how can we lace our day with stuff that makes us feel better? That makes life more enjoy- able and less of a struggle? What little or large thing can we do to tip the scales of our present moment over into happiness? How do we keep our vibe purring at a high- er frequency? Might as well get comfortable. Again, it doesn’t sound too terribly important, but it is. If you’re reading this, you’re alive. You’re here. And like all the rest of us you have a plate in front of you that, more than likely, has a lot of stuff on it. Some of it you love, some of it you don’t care for quite so much. Some of it you placed there yourself. Some of it was dished out by somebody or something else. And every morning, when you haul yourself out of bed and place your tired feet on the floor, you have a choice. You get to decide how you’re going to deal with what’s on your plate. You may not like it, but at the risk of sounding like Yoda, deal with it you must. Might I suggest, you might as well get comfortable. I like to think that the universe is designed in such a way that, at any given time, there are options available to all of us. What, after all, does our day consist of but a series of decisions and choices? Sausage or bacon? Anger or laughter? Thong or commando? Therefore, isn’t a large part of how that day unfolds, comfortably or uncomfortably, up to us and what we choose? If I should find myself suffocating in traf- fic gridlock, last in line at the check-out behind a guy with a jar of pennies, sucking wind at the bottom of the driveway as the plow seals me in yet again ... I could blow a panel, lose it, hit the roof. But really, I might as well just get comfortable. I might as well find something redeeming, halfway pleasant or, at the very least, funny about the situation. The longer I’m here, the more I’m aware of how terrifyingly fast it all goes by. And how criminal it is to waste even a second of it in misery, anger or negativity. I deserve better and so do you. So, might as well get comfortable. Working in conjunction with Durham Hospice, we will profile people who are nearing the end of life’s journey, who they are, what they want people to know and remember about them. We will also be featuring the people and volunteers associated with Durham Hospice, the active role they take, the training, the friendships and emotions involved.E va Majcher doesn’t have to slip on a pair of boxing gloves or climb into the octagon with those versed in mixed martial arts to prove she’s a fighter. She looks you straight in the eye and tells you she is. And you can’t help but believe her. The Oshawa resident was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, and it metastasized to her lungs, liver and spine. In late summer of last year, more bad news followed: a brain tumour was discovered. The 52 year old has resigned herself to the fact she is terminally ill. When the original can- cer diagnosis was delivered, she was given six months to live. It’s been almost three years. “I know I’m sick but I do it for my kids. I’m a fighter,” she says with little doubt through a Polish accent. “Before I went into the hospital I was real- ly sick. I couldn’t even move. I couldn’t eat, drink, anything. They told me I have to fight for my kids.” Her kids are daughters Joanna, 24, Gabriela, 22, and son Adam, 14. Joanna recalls the day she found out her mom had cancer. Originally asked to come into the cancer centre at the Oshawa hospital to accompany her mom for an appointment, when she arrived, the first of many surprises awaited. “When I ended up going at 9:30 for the appointment I was looking for her and it turned out she was already in emerge and had been there since five in the morning. She had trouble breathing that day. “She was in there for five weeks with bron- chitis and that’s when we got the news she had breast cancer.” The cancer quickly spread to Eva’s lungs, liver and spine. Eva was born on April 1, 1961 and grew up in the small village of Rzezawa in Poland, one of four brothers and four sisters. Her moth- er, Bronislawa, is 90 and still lives in Poland. Almost 30 years ago Eva came to Canada, sponsored by an uncle, took some English classes and worked at the Greenwood Mush- room Farm in Ashburn. She was active in her spare time, with a passion for cooking and gardening. The day she went to the emergency ward for bronchitis changed everything. She stayed in hospital for five weeks and found out she had cancer. “They told me I had six months to live,” she recalls. “Lots of times you cry because you have kids. (The doctor) told me don’t give up and I’m not going to give up. “Sometimes I think why me? My mom had eight kids and only I have cancer. My mom is 90 and she is OK, she’s fine. Only me.” The diagnosis hit the family hard. “That was tough news to get,” says Joanna. “You’re 21 years old and you find out your mom is pretty much palliative. It’s pretty scary. It has its ups and downs. Some days are real- ly tough. You just push it to the back of your mind and cope with it the best you can.” On this day Eva is taking a few minutes out from the Durham Hospice day program, where terminally ill clients get together with volunteers and co-ordinators to share their stories, enjoy lunch and an afternoon activity together. The weekly sessions give Eva some- thing to look forward to. “When I came in I was scared. I wondered if the people would be good. After I came I went home and was feeling so good because I met the people. When I don’t come, I miss it. They are family.” Despite the outlook, Eva hasn’t given up. She’s fighting for her family. “Every day I pray to get better and live as long as I can.” Listen to audio slideshow @ durhamregion.com Never giving upTHE FIGHT Durham Hospice upcoming events Durham Hospice has a trio of events coming up on the calendar. Fero believes that the most important component of the wedding is the bride. She argues that “when people attend weddings, the most important event they anticipate is witnessing the bride’s beauty and she works hard to ensure the bride looks like a movie star.” At Glamour Studio, Fero spends approximately three hours with a client during her trial to come up with the best look for her big day. I have experience in photography and film makeup, so I know what looks good in photographs and on video, too,” she says. Brides-to-be should book a makeup consultation as soon as they decide on a wedding date. Don’t wait until two or three months before the wedding because you may not get a great artist,” Fero explains. I am usually booked for weddings a year in advance. I also have brides that book their wedding dates based on my availability!” Drop by the Glamour Studio booth at the show to watch as Fero work her magic on the fashion show models. What to wear – for her “For brides you’ll see gorgeous lace, lace and more lace this season,” explains Joanna Carter, owner of Bridal Desires. “Vintage-inspired styles and sweetheart necklines are making a splash but designers are introducing more fashion trends from the past with bateau necklines, illusion necklines, cap straps and portrait necklines together with champagne and latte coloured fabrics are coming back in style.” Full length gowns are more in demand but cocktail to the knee or just above the knee is in style for summer. Popular necklines include sweetheart necklines, one shoulder, bateau necklines as well few new designs. We are now seeing soft cowl necklines as well as cap sleeves. Brides are adding a layer of detail with sashes adorned with jewels and owers and gro-grain sashes to add texture. Silhouettes include mermaid, trumpet, ball gown and sheath-cut. The newest bridal gowns are embellished with crystals and clear and frosted jewels that cast a soft twinkle in mood lighting for a chandelier-inspired looks. Dramatic back details add to the glamour with keyhole backs or deep open backs. Fabric trends for brides include layers and layers of tulle inspiring a dreamy, airy and wispy look! Bridesmaids are wearing lots of lace to compliment the bride with chi on being a popular fabric choice this year. Empire waistlines and tted bodices to natural waist then owing and draping chi ons in the skirt create a lovely silhouette for bridesmaid’s attire. For an added luxury, chi on is available with variations to keep it interesting and luxe chi ons that have a bit of shimmer or textures similar to linen. Mixing lace and chi on gives a dress the look of mixing formal style with simpler, softer chi on. It is beautiful. Soft mint greens, pale petal pinks and blush tones, greys, charcoals, blacks, orchids and lavenders, corals and bold and bright purples are all fresh and exciting for this year. Finding a venue that does everything for you will help to keep you sane through the madness of your wedding day. While renting a hall may seem less expensive, be aware that there may be a huge list of things you may need to do and pay for yourself such as: obtaining a liquor license, determining how much alcohol and mix you will need, setting up the tables, renting linens, renting dishes, glasses and cutlery, providing event insurance, arranging a caterer, clean-up fees...the list goes on and on. At Ajax Convention Centre, we meet with you to determine how many tables you need and what linen colours you would like and the rest of the work is up to us,” explains Kim Brigden, Sales and Events Manager at Ajax Convention Centre. You will also have a coordinator to assist you through the entire booking process as well as a maître d’ who looks after your event.” The other great part of an all-inclusive venue? At the end of the night you just go home! The mess is theirs to clean up! A Team of In-House Chefs At the Ajax Convention Centre, the groceries are dropped o fresh at the kitchen door and practically everything is prepared on-site from scratch. That means that their chefs are in full control of what you are served - allowing them to prepare food that is gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan or any other dietary restriction that you require. The same goes for allergies and any foods that you need to avoid. One of our chefs is a vegetarian so you can be sure that your vegetarian guests will be looked after!” explains Ms. Brigden. We also include a menu tasting with your wedding booking that allows you to see and, of course, taste everything from hors d’oeuvres to dessert. Parking Before you book, ask if parking is an additional expense. At the Ajax Convention Centre there is plenty of free parking. And, as an added convenience, there is a hotel on either side which makes safely staying the night very easy for you and your guests! Bridal Suite Is there a room devoted to the bride and groom where they can keep person items and have a space to themselves? The Ajax Convention Centre provides a bridal suite with your wedding booking and there is even a secret entrance that leads to the bridal suite for sneaking in prior to your ceremony. Décor Everyone envisions what they want their wedding to look like. Consider how much work you will have to do in order to achieve that look. Are the walls painted bright colours? Is there anything that needs to be covered up or hidden? The ballrooms at the Ajax Convention Centre are elegant and neutral allowing for a blank canvas when it comes to decorating for your wedding. There are spots in the lobby and on the staircases that are perfect for photos too. This is convenient and can save the extra travel time of going o - site to take pictures. Preferred Vendors The Ajax Convention Centre has a list of preferred vendors which means that you are dealing with reliable professionals who are recommended and trusted by the venue, and who know the venue inside and out. This means you won’t have to answer all their questions regarding set-up, tear-down, delivery or dimensions. More stress o of your plate – so all you have to do is enjoy! ADVERTISING FEATUREHave the time of your life – with Sight and Sound Events Hosting a party that creates memories for everyone is an art form that takes years of experience to perfect. Don’t trust your wedding reception to just anyone. Steven Ernst, owner of Sight and Sound, and his team of professional emcees and DJs know how to create the style of party you want – so you, and all of your guests, can have a great time celebrating your special day. In the music business for over 34 years, Sight and Sound has professional DJs who arrive on time, play requests and, best of all, get your guests engaged in the fun. They are the industry leaders in Durham Region for a reason - they have consistently delivered exceptional services to brides and grooms and continue to build their business from referrals. Pre-planning is the key to a great event With Sight and Sound’s new interactive website, couples can complete planning forms online and, with a special access code, brides and their guests can request the music they want to have at the party. “Couples are loving this feature,” explains Steve Ernst. “It’s easy to use, saves time, guests have input into music before the wedding date, and couples can sit down at home and do this “project” together getting the groom more involved.” If you prefer to meet in person, they meet with you several times to discover your musical tastes, the songs you have chosen for the formal dances and the diversity of your guests. Then they assign one of their professional DJs that best suits your wedding needs. A 50 year old DJ will not show up for a crowd of 22 year olds! More than just music And they o er much more than just the music for your wedding. Sight and Sound will take care of every facet of your after-party. From your grand entrance as man and wife, to exciting games that incorporate your loved ones, "It's all part of the package we o er," says Ernst. "If you don’t have a Master of Ceremonies, we can take care of that. If you do have an emcee then we'll work together," he explains. Their state-of-the-art systems have access to the internet right on location so their library of song choices is now unlimited. And they have more special touches than you can imagine so all you need to do is relax and enjoy the celebration. Set the mood with lighting Looking for a spectacular light show at your wedding? Imagine seeing your names and wedding date on the wall 10 feet high as you enter the room and transforming the wall colour to coordinate with the bridal party dresses or accent colours. The atmosphere created with this lighting, from cocktails through dancing, cannot be duplicated for the cost. With a professional party host and properly licensed music from every era, your party will surely be a hit. If you have considered having a friend or non-professional host your reception event, think again. It’s actually illegal to play unlicensed music at a public event like a wedding? “Having a friend with an ipod host your party can get you in all kinds of trouble,” explains Steve. “Halls are watching for this more now as it is a legal issue and the hall doesn’t want to lose their liquor license over it.” Save at the Ajax Wedding Show! Company President Steve Ernst has been the o cial emcee for the Ajax Pickering Wedding Show for over 10 years with one of Durham’s most requested, DJ Tyler, as the show’s music man. Complete office facility, with Boardroom & Kitchen Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor / bkelly@durhamregion.com / 905-579-4400 #2254 It’s official: Panthers make playoffs Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- It was a bittersweet weekend for the Pickering Panthers. On the plus side, it finally became offi- cial: they have qualified for the Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs, with just a final seeding position to be determined this week. On the negative side, they lost all three games, earning just a single point as a result of a 4-3 overtime loss in Milton on Friday. Saturday they lost in Aurora 5-1, a team they may face in the opening round of play- offs, and on home ice Sunday were defeated 6-4 by Trenton. Looking back over the weekend, GM/head coach Mike Galati was relieved that his hock- ey club finally booked a ticket for the post- season, but was disappointed with the over- all result. Especially the game against Auro- ra. “It’s nice to see that x beside our name finally,” said Galati of the designation when looking at the standings online. “I thought we played well in Milton. Other than the first period I thought we outplayed them. “Against Trenton I thought we played well, it was that game in the middle (against Auro- ra) that I think counted the most, just in case we play them, that we came up flat. “We didn’t have the best weekend, but we’ll be better this weekend.” The Panthers have just two games left in the regular season, at home to the Cobourg Cougars in a rare midweek afternoon game on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Pickering Rec- reation Complex, and Friday in Lindsay. The game against Cobourg is a makeup from one postponed Jan. 24. The Panthers and Newmarket are tied with 50 points each for seventh and eighth place in the North-East conference. At the top, Kingston leads Aurora by two points for first overall, but Aurora has a game in hand. “I think it’s going to come down to the last game,” said Galati of settling the standings. “Both teams are going to be a tough battle. We’ll try our best to prepare when we know who we’re playing.” As for the final two games, Galati intends to give some of his top-end players a bit of a break in ice time as the club pushed hard to secure a playoff spot the past couple of weeks. One of those expected to get a much- deserved rest is goaltender Steven Dombro- sky, who leads the entire league in games played (48), minutes played (2783:59) and saves (1428). The opening date for playoffs is Feb. 26. Sibling rivalry WHITBY -- Twin brothers Jeremy, top, and Justin Riekstins, bottom, both members of Ajax Budokan Judo Club, competed during the Ajax Budokan Judo Club annual Shiai tournament for athletes U10, U12, U14, U16, seniors and masters at Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School. The competition served as a senior qualifier for the Ontario team. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland Appleby proves his worth in Generals net Brian McNair bmcnair@durahmregion.com OSHAWA -- Rest assured, there is no goal- tending controversy with the Oshawa Gen- erals, no matter how the long weekend shook down. Ken Appleby did more than just an admi- rable job filling in for Daniel Altshuller while he was suspended; he was superb, winning all three games and two of them by shutout. He was so good, he was given a fourth straight start even after Altshuller was eli- gible to return, and backstopped the Gen- erals to another victory, 3-2 over the Battal- ion in North Bay Sunday afternoon. The fact that Altshuller was back in for a 6-3 home-ice loss Monday afternoon to the London Knights did nothing to shake the confidence of Generals head coach D.J. Smith. “Altsy has been the guy all year,” Smith said of his 19-year-old third-year veteran. “His stats say he’s one of the best in the league, so he’ll continue to start against all the big boys.” Indeed, Altshuller has been among the best in the Ontario Hockey League this season, currently second in goals-against average (2.51), third in wins (27) and sixth in save percentage (.917). Appleby has stepped up and become a reliable backup in his second season, how- ever, and also sports a 2.51 GAA with a 9-5- 0-2 record and .918 save percentage. After leading the Generals to two straight shutout wins, including 6-0 at home over Ottawa Friday, Appleby made 29 saves in North Bay Sunday, and stopped Nick Paul on a penalty shot with 38 seconds remain- ing to preserve the win. “That’s the best I’ve seen him,” Smith said, referring to Appleby’s four-game stint. “He looked confident in there, he was square to the puck and gave us some great minutes, especially in North Bay, he made some big saves. It’s nice to know you’ve got a guy that can come in in relief.” Appleby no doubt drew the Sunday start in part as a reward for his excellent play and in part to keep Altshuller well rested for the Knights, the league’s third best team who improved to 39-12-1-4 with the win, their fourth in a row. The Generals are now 36-16-0-5 and hold an eight-point lead atop the Eastern Con- ference over the Sudbury Wolves (30-17-3- 6), who have a game in hand. The Generals have a home-and-home with the Frontenacs (31-20-2-2) this week- end, in Kingston Friday and in Oshawa Sunday, and travel to Belleville Saturday to face the Bulls (17-34-3-2). du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Fe b r u a r y 1 9 , 2 0 1 4 24 AP NEW!NEW!DISCOVER IMPROVE ACHIEVE Oshawa: 200 John St. W. oshawatrucking.com 4-month internship with leading-edge transportation companies Introduction to Supply Chain & Logistics Commercial Driver Improvement (Defensive Driving) Course Certificate Air Brake Training 50 hours of one-on-one in-cab instruction Training on state-of-the-art 3D simulators 40WEEKS PROFESSIONAL TRANSPORT OPERATOR Air Brake Training Commercial Driver Improvement (Defensive Driving) Course Certificate Preparation for AZ Class license Training on state-of-the-art 3D simulators 8WEEKS TRACTOR-TRAILER (AZ) Member of:Delivered inPartnership with: Courses include a diploma from theTruck Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO).
