On Dec. 19 the City celebrated the grand opening of the Millen- nium Square Rink, Pickering’s first synthetic outdoor skating surface. The unique rink is made of heavy-duty plastic boards coat- ed with a “skate enhancer” lubri- cant. It feels similar to ice under- foot and can be used with regu- lar skates, but isn’t susceptible to melting like a conventional rink. “With regular ice outdoors, you’re fighting weather,” says Rob Gagen, supervisor of parks oper- ations for the City of Pickering. “It’s also a bit of a liability, the ice can get bumpy and have trip edges.” Because the new rink isn’t weather dependent, it could the- oretically be used year-round. It’s also less expensive and boasts easier installation. However, the $50,000 rink saw no visitors on the weekend as residents decided not to brave the freezing rain. “The weather is not favour- able,” said Pickering’s Jim Virgin. Mr. Virgin and his two teenag- ers Shannon and Connor decid- ed to check it out but opted to use the surface another time. The family is famillar with skating on synthetic ice and recalled using it at lessons years ago. “We wanted to see how big it was. It’s a little smaller than we thought but I definitely like the lights, it’s a cool aspect. See LOCAL page 8 DURHAM -- Turning on the tap and flushing that toilet is going to cost you more in 2014. Durham Region councillors approved the 2014 water and san- itary sewer user rates at the final meeting before Christmas. The combined increase works out to 6.3 per cent, or $50.12 per year for the average household. The increase works out to $12.53 quarterly. The water rate is going up 8.9 per cent, while the sanitary sewer rate is increasing four per cent. The increases take effect on Jan. 1. PICKERING -- People tried out the new synthetic surface during the grand opening of the new Millennium Square skating rink on Dec. 19. The rink will be open daily in the winter from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The rink the first of its kind in Pickering, is made of plastic boards coated with a “skate enhancer” lubricant. Hope Whittaker, manager of the Laura store in the Pickering Town Centre, sat down with Metroland Media Group Durham Region to discuss the trends for the fall season, with tips on how to dress for the holidays. “Keep it really simple,” said Ms. Whittaker, who began her career in fashion with Holt Renfrew in the 1970s. For example, if a woman chooses a nice pair of black pants and a simple top or cardi- gan, it can be dressed up with a bold necklace or other accessories such as a belt or brace- let. “Add a little bit of sparkle for fun,” she said. She showed examples from the Laura, Laura Petite and Laura Plus lines, which were modelled by staff. Since money can get a little tight around the holidays, dressing up for a holiday dinner or Christmas party can be done on a budget. Ms. Whittaker suggests looking to one’s own closet for a black pant or skirt, and then buy- ing a “novelty” top. “Don’t be afraid to punch it up with some colour,” she said. Adding accessories or simply changing a top can also take a look from day to night. She said holiday parties no longer require really fancy dresses. “It’s more contemporary business casual,” said Ms. Whittaker. If going to a fancy dinner, she suggests a simple black dress, with a cardigan or a blaz- er, and of course, accessories. Cardigans are very hot this season, she said, and the best part: they’re machine washable. It’s also important that women make sure to choose the right clothes for their body, so asking a sales associate for help is best in order to ensure the clothes they buy will be the best fit. She said black and white is really strong this season. Rich colours, different fabrics, and both horizontal and vertical stripes mixed with different colours and fabrics are popular this season at Laura. Ms. Whittaker said although women tend to shy away from horizontal stripes, they can work on any figure as long as the clothes fit well. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland Salute to Canadian soldiers on Durham bridge Community solidifies its support for soldiers through installation of plaques Parvaneh Pessian ppessian@durhamregion.com WHITBY -- With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, John Dolstra wants to give residents a chance to slow down and reflect this season. Two commemorative plaques honour- ing Canadian troops have been installed at the Brock Street bridge in Whitby and recently the protective plastic covers were removed to unveil the new additions. “I’ve been flooded with phone calls with everyone asking, ‘When are you taking the plastic off the plaques’?” said Mr. Dolstra, a Whitby resident who organized a com- mittee of volunteers last year to raise funds for the purchase of the plaques. They were installed about three weeks ago and on Dec. 17 members of the com- mittee gathered to remove the covers and place a Canadian flag there to draw atten- tion to the bridge overlooking Hwy. 401. “This time of the year is a tough time for a lot of people and I think with what we’re doing today, we’ll give a lot of people a place to come and remember those who gave their lives for us,” said Mr. Dolstra. The stretch of Hwy. 401 between Tren- ton and Toronto is known as the Highway of Heroes. Motorcades bearing the bod- ies of soldiers killed overseas travelled the route to the Office of the Chief Coroner in Toronto following a repatriation ceremony at Canadian Forces Base Trenton. Durham residents have flocked to local bridges along Hwy. 401 to pay their respects to the soldiers since 2002. The Brock Street bridge was one of the most prominently featured overpasses in this tradition, with throngs of people proud- ly waving their flags as the procession passed. In June 2012, the committee set a goal to raise $50,000 toward erecting two plaques on the Brock Street bridge as a tribute to soldiers and their families. Working along- side the True Patriot Love Foundation, the group managed to raise nearly $55,000 with the help of about 300 sponsors. “There were a lot of people that came out on the bridges and this keeps that alive,” said Bob Hartley, Sergeant-at-Arms with the Whitby branch of Royal Canadian Legion, one of the organizations involved in the initiative. “It’s important to do things like this ... we owe it to the soldiers that came down that highway.” Visit: www.whitbybridge.com du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 3 3 AP BOXINGWEEK BLOWOUTSALESTARTSFRIDAY WORTH THE DRIVE TO WILSON FURNITURE OSHAWA HUGESAVINGSAT THE LEATHERSTORE HOURS Mon. - Wed. 9-6Thurs. & Fri. 9:00-9:00Sat. 9:30-5:30 Sun. 12-5 Main:20 Centre St. N., Downtown OshawaLeather Store:81 Richmond St. W., OshawaFREE PARKING(ask for tokens)905-723-2255 www.wilsonfurniture.com WILSON LEATHERSTORE SAME FAMILY OWNED | 2 LOCATIONS | AN OSHAWA TRADITION SINCE 1934 SAVINGSAT THE LEATHERSTORE SAVE ON: • Floor Models & Discontinued Styles •Special Orders at Sale Prices •Mattresses •Sofas • Bedrooms • Dining Rooms •Sectionals •Home Office HUGESAVINGS HUGESAVINGSVE ON:SA 5 DAYS TO SAVE UP TO 75% OFF Darryl Sherman3rdGeneration Owner Av oid these 7 critical mistakes when selling your home in 2014 DURHAM – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and – worse – financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market. As this report uncovers, most home-sellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. One may have expected a quieter 2013, given the loud eruption of the ORNGE scan- dal people were still shaking their heads about when the year began, but for those looking for more to present them with dis- belief and disappointment in their govern- ments, the year delivered more than anyone could have hoped. At the provincial level, news of the real cost of scrapped power plants in Oakville and Mississauga came following the resig- nation of Ontario's elected premier, Dalton McGuinty. While the new premier, Kathleen Wynne, acknowledges the expense of more than $1 billion was a big mistake, it doesn't change the fact it happened or do anything to help the Liberals’ track dubious record on spending. The Ontario Liberals have repeat- edly overspent by the billions annually, and this year's budget was no exception. In federal politics, disgrace loomed as well. Some members of the Senate came under RCMP investigation over expense and housing claims, and the scandal eventually reached the Prime Minister’s Office. Allega- tions are that Prime Minister Stephen Harp- er’s former chief of staff, Nigel Wright, along with Senator Mike Duffy, were involved in fraud, bribery, and breach of trust offenc- es -- all of which are still before the courts. In November, Conservative senators Mr. Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau were suspended for two years, though all passionately worked to defend their records and their reputations. While the Liberals’ overspending and shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone in Ontario -- it has been a pattern of behav- iour for the provincial government since Mr. McGuinty was elected a decade ago -- criti- cism surrounding financial scandals may be a little more harsh for the feds. Voters well remember Prime Minister Ste- phen Harper’s frequent exhortations about honesty and fiscal responsibility, making the Senate expense scandal much harder to overlook. But the biggest blow to Canadian politics -- the scandal that leaves a stain of embar- rassment on every single Canadian -- came from a municipal mayor, Toronto’s crack- smoking Rob Ford. He has made Canada a laughing stock. One can only guess how many investors are sitting on their money in the GTA and the country thanks to Mr. Ford’s disgraceful conduct -- not just as an admitted drinker and drug user, but also as a bully inside the council chambers. Canada is the best nation on earth; we have freedoms and peace others can only wish for. This country deserves better -- let’s hope it comes in 2014. High-tech gadgets just don’t cut it during ice storms It’s been a long time since Durham as whole has been whacked by a storm like the one that hit this past weekend. With iced-over trees taking out power lines across the GTA it’s a stark reminder of how much our modern lives depend on electricity and it seems like we’re growing more and more dependant as each year passes. Like many people, I’m among those who had forsaken a landline in favour of a cell phone. It works just fine 99 per cent of the time. Cell towers run off electricity and they do have a backup for minor power outages. But when an ice storm hits and knocks out power to a wide area, service can become spotty. People with a landline and a regular non-cordless phone have no such worries, usually. For me it ranged from no service to edge service where I could make the odd call but had trouble grabbing anything off the internet. It’s too bad because there was a great deal of information available online, if only I could have gotten to it. When the power went out so did the Wifi. None of the streaming aps on my new iPhone do the job of an old fashioned $20 battery-operated radio in a situation like this. At times like this I have to get in my car to get any kind of information through the radio or by driving to an area with cell cover- age. But say a tree had fallen on my car, not that unbelievable given the weather condi- tions, I would have been completely out of luck. So instead of hitting Best Buy for Boxing Day this year, shopping for the latest gad- gets, I think I’m better off investing in some emergency basics. And rethinking my deci- sion to opt out of landline. -- Contact social media columnist Reka Szekely on Facebook or on Twitter @rszekely Reka Szekely Reporter Social Media Warm hearts needed to assist those in need To the editor: Being with family around the Christmas season is something most of us look for- ward too, however, some Canadians are not that lucky. For victims of domestic abuse, the holi- day season is a time that inflicts fear and sadness rather than joy. Economic pres- sure is proven to be a cause of many argu- ments and violence. Not only does one have to worry about the gifts on their wish list, but there is also heightened pressure for the purchase of Christmas dinners and alcoholic drinks. A mixture of alcohol, the anxiety of cel- ebration or extra holiday debt can cause tempers to rise and fights to ensue. This time of year can be emotionally draining, especially for those who are already sub- jected to abuse by spouses or family mem- bers. The temperature may be cold outside, but that doesn’t mean our hearts should be as well. Support local shelters for victims of domestic violence. Donations of cloth- ing, food and other necessities are always in much need, especially after the holiday season. Spread some Christmas cheer and help victims of abuse stay warm this win- ter. Athena Zboch Whitby The magic of Christmas One of the things I enjoy about getting older, besides the fact that I can have cook- ies at breakfast if I want, is the perspective that attends the aging process. Like hiking up a mountain trail, the further along the path you have come, the more impressive and interesting the view when you stop and look back over your shoul- der. When you first start out on the journey there’s not much to see behind you, except for maybe the snack bar and parking lot. Consequently, young people don’t spend much time looking back. And why would they? Everything looks so much more excit- ing up ahead. But as the years pass, there comes a certain pleasure from stopping now and then and taking stock of the memorable moments one has enjoyed along the way. Christmas, for me, has always been one of those way stations. Christmas Eve, in partic- ular, is the perfect vantage point for looking back and savoring the ride. And it’s interesting too that, as we age, our Christmases become earmarked not by that particular gift that tickled us so much or that party that was off the charts, but by simpler, quieter, almost invisible moments of peace and contentment. I think you first begin to really experience these moments when you have children of your own. There is so much vicarious pleasure to be taken from watch- ing your kids getting ready for Santa’s arriv- al, from reading them Christmas stories on Christmas Eve, helping them to write their letters to Santa, putting out the plate of milk, cookies and carrots for the reindeer and of course basking in the glow of their delirium Christmas morning. My boys are well past the age of Christmas letters and cookies. They are young men, on the cusp of discovering Christmas with their own children. But even so, they still have many Christmas gifts to offer their parents. We will not be reading The Polar Express together this Christmas Eve, but we will still be sharing stories, old and new and I will still be basking in the glow of having them under my roof, at my table, having had them bless my life in a million wonderful ways. As we get older, Christmas necessar- ily changes. It becomes much more about family, friends and connection. It becomes less and less about the big gift, the big cel- ebration and more and more about that special chat while stuffing the bird or chop- ping the turnip, that incredible bottle of wine, that long-anticipated hug, that loving glance. And sometimes it’s about nothing at all. Sometimes it’s simply about watching, sitting back and taking in what you have, where you are and where you’ve come from. Those, I think, are my favourite moments. The ones when I am most at peace, most content, most filled with the true spirit of Christmas. They’re not big, noisy or shiny and you have to look for them, but they are always there ... and they are priceless. Whatever your plans for this holiday sea- son, whether you celebrate Christmas or not, my wish for you is that you too will be able to stop and savour at least a little of that true Christmas magic. That you will be able to be still and quiet and happily watch- ful enough to find a few of those priceless moments. Merry Christmas everyone. -- Durham resident Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 3 7 Let’s Talk Join us on Facebook and weigh in with readers on topics of the day www.facebook.com/ newsdurham Lisa Pasowisty-James: People who do not shovel their sidewalks. The mayor says he saw the technology being promoted at various trade shows and conferences and was intrigued. This fall he asked City staff to look into a rink at Millen- nium Square, with funding from the local business community. Sponsors were quick to come on board and cover the cost of the pilot project. “Assuming it is as successful as I think it’s going to be, and with the continued sup- port of the community, I think this is some- thing we could expand,” Mayor Ryan said, noting City Hall would be another ideal rink location. The pilot project will see the Nautical Vil- lage Business Association monitor usage of the rink and provide snow clearing. In turn, the rink is expected to bring the waterfront to life over the winter months and support businesses in that area, mak- ing the Nautical Village a “four-season tourist destination.” The Millennium Square Rink is at the bot- tom of Liverpool Road South, at the lake. It will be open for free skating throughout the winter from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day and can accommodate 40 skaters at a time. Washroom facilities have been winterized and heated and lighting has been installed for evening skating. For more information, visit www.picker- ing.ca/skate. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland Durham water, sewer rates to rise $50 Future increases projected to 2023 DURHAM -- Turning on the tap and flushing that toilet is going to cost you more in 2014. Durham Region councillors approved the 2014 water and sanitary sewer user rates at the final meeting before Christ- mas. The combined increase works out to 6.3 per cent, or $50.12 per year for the average household. The increase works out to $12.53 quar- terly. The water rate is going up 8.9 per cent, while the sanitary sewer rate is increas- ing four per cent. The increases take effect on Jan. 1. The only comment about the increase at the council meeting was from Oshawa Councillor John Neal, who said raising the rates now was premature until the entire Regional budget was considered. In a press release, the Region said the increases are “necessary to provide for the maintenance and repair of aging infrastructure, to cover inflationary increases in operating costs and to com- plete capital improvements required to comply with legislation to ensure safe and reliable water and wastewater treat- ment programs.” Rates have increased annually, even though usage has been steadily drop- ping. In 2003, the average household used about 68,000 gallons a year, but this year, the average is about 54,300 gallons. Projections through to 2023 show user rates will increase between seven and nine per cent annually, a staff report to councillors noted. One of the reasons is the number of new users has slowed while demand from current users has been dropping. Storm damage AJAX -- A large tree covered the sidewalk at the corner of Falby Court and Harwood Avenue on Dec. 23, felled by the weekend ice storm. Some 140,000 homes across Durham Region lost power during the height of the storm. More than 50,000 of those customers were located in Clarington with another 30,000 scattered throughout Oshawa. Veridian, which covers Pickering and Ajax as well as Newcastle, Port Hope and Uxbridge reported 47,000 homes without power. Many homes were without power for more than 24 hours, prompting municipalities to set up warming stations at local arenas and community centres. Visit www.durhamregion.com for continuing coverage of the storm aftermath. Sabrina Byrnes / Metroland We should all remember to count our blessings Good things come out of every tragedy. I’ve lived long enough to believe that. The ice storm last weekend was a reminder. Waking up at 3 a.m. to find the power off was one thing. Hearing cracking, ripping sounds as limbs fell off the many big trees around our home was quite another. I was wide awake in an instant, awash with adren- aline. As was everyone in the neighbourhood, I found out later. Which, strangely, comfort- ed me, knowing I wasn’t alone with jangled nerves that no yoga moves or deep breath- ing seemed to banish. All the women and even some men admitted to being awake all night listening to those ominous thumps and cracks as the freezing rain coated each twig and needle, pulling trees over and weighing down branches till they fell. It was downright scary. The first thing my husband did at dawn was head out to the garden shed to feed the waiting chickadees. He had to move a few big pine limbs to do so, and I watched from the kitchen window, worried more would fall. We’d had enough foresight to park the cars out from under the big pines and black cher- ry. Mine was completely surrounded by ice- encased lilac branches bent down around it. Eventually Dennis freed my little car with chainsaw and clippers, and I dragged the heavy branches down the lane to the brush pile. Juncos, tree sparrows and cardinals hungrily feeding nearby ignored me, so glad to find food in an ice-covered world. As the day moved on, neighbours ven- tured forth to view all the damage, check on one another and commiserate, telling sto- ries of who had fire, who had water, who had telephone service. That was the best thing, everyone’s willingness to share. The ice storm brought us closer and made us appre- ciate good neighbours. I was so grateful for them, for our wood stove, for fire itself and for firewood, which of course comes from trees. In the storm our area lost many birch trees, Scotch and white pines, anything with reaching limbs. Cedars everywhere bent over. I heard a crack and watched one limb of a huge red oak, the sturdiest of trees, swing down over a neighbour’s house, a fortunate miss. As another long night approached I was deeply moved to hear the hooting of the great horned owls that live in our neighbour- hood pines. A reminder that new trees will grow, and Mother Nature is endlessly resil- ient. As are humans. We’re still without power as I write this. I’ll have to drive to a friend’s in Oshawa who still has hydro--lovely hydro!--to type it up and send it in. A chance for a good visit with her, a hot shower, a glimpse of the birds coming to her big backyard feeder. A reminder to me to count my many blessings. Canadian organization suggests mandatory spay/neuter at all shelters Looking at recent numbers from a report by the Canadian Federation of Humane Soci- eties, it’s clear that people are still not taking care of their pets the way they should be. The federation, the national voice of Humane Societies and SPCAs, surveyed 102 shelters across Canada. Not all shelters par- ticipated in the 2012 survey, but these num- bers give a good representation of compan- ion animals in the country’s shelters. Of those shelters surveyed, more than 119,000 cats, 53,000 dogs and 15,000 other animals were taken in and cared for. The intake of cats to shelters is consistent- ly twice the intake of dogs in a given year. Unfortunately, since 2008, the number of animals brought in to shelters has increased. This could be due to the economic slow- down, but to me, that’s still no excuse. Only adopt if you can commit. “Only four per cent of cats brought in to shelters were reclaimed by owners com- pared to 26 per cent of dogs,” said Toolika Rastogi, policy and research manager with CFHS. “We strongly encourage everyone, members of the public and shelters, to use a permanent method of identification to ensure that lost animals are reunited with their families.” The following number really got to me: only seven per cent of dogs and five per cent of cats (both stray and owner surrendered) entering shelters were already spayed or neutered. Thankfully, 96 per cent of the shelters that responded spay or neuter pets in their care before adopting them out as a matter of pol- icy. In 2012, shelters spayed and neutered more than 22,000 cats and 10,000 dogs. The procedure costs shelters a lot of money, but it’s necessary to keep the unwanted pet population down, and to keep animals healthy. These numbers show how much low-cost, high-volume spay and neuter clinics are needed. Fingers crossed 2014 will mark the beginning of one to come to Durham. The report says euthanasia is the starkest reality of pet overpopulation due to a lack of responsible pet ownership. Six times as many cats were euthanized as dogs in 2012 - 41 per cent of cats compared to 15 per cent of dogs. I don’t like these numbers, but the rates are much better than in the mid-1990s when they were closer to 60 per cent for cats and 30 per cent for dogs. Adoption rates for dogs have dropped slightly from 52 per cent in 2010 to 48 per cent in 2012. Many dogs (4.3 per cent) are transferred to another facility with more capacity or to a rescue group, says CFHS. On the bright side, cat adoption rates for 2012 were 46 per cent - an increase from just 38 per cent in 2007. I personally think as animal lovers, we should step in and speak up for pets, even to our friends and family members. It’s diffi- cult to give advice on the way someone cares for their pet - it’s like telling a parent how to raise their child, but it can be done in a non- judgemental way. If you think your friend’s pet should be spayed or neutered, casually bring up the benefits of getting the proce- dure done in conversation. The same can be said if you don’t agree with your friend let- ting their pet outside. And let’s always encourage adoption. Adopting an animal is cheaper than going to a breeder, and as the numbers indicate, the animals in shelters are in serious need of homes. Animals cannot say what’s on their mind. It’s our job to speak up for them when it’s needed. It’s something I plan to do more often in 2014. The CFHS has spoken up by making sev- eral recommendations to increase adop- tion rates and decrease euthanasia. These include widespread education, accessi- ble spay/neuter initiatives and mandatory spay/neuter and identification for all ani- mals leaving shelters. If they want to target a specific area, they can choose one zone or if they want broad coverage they can choose to run in all five. Advertising packages are available for six weeks, 18 weeks, 36 weeks and 52 weeks, and discounted rates are available for longer- term commitments. “I have nothing but good things to say about the Focus on Business feature,” says Wayne Hutchison, owner of Durham Windows and Doors, who has been advertising in the feature for 15 years. Having an ad in the newspaper every week helps businesses build recognition. Readers who see the advertisement on a regular basis become familiar with the business. Running in the section long term shows potential customers that the business is consistent and is there for the long term. The feature includes a 3” wide by 1.5” deep ad, but the best part is the free editorial that comes with each six week run. The articles will talk in-depth about the business and can include a photograph or image. Many advertisers find that the articles provide a surge in phone calls and sales. The articles allow readers to learn more about the businesses, including detailed information about the products and services they offer. Many advertisers have seen a dramatic increase in their bottom line because of advertising in the section. For more information on the Focus on Business feature or to book an ad, please call Connie Baker at (905) 579-4400 ext. 2271 or email cbaker@durhamregion.com. AJAX NISSAN 500 Bayly Street West, Ajax, ON Tel: (905) 686-0555 Blue in the loo For such a small room, the bathroom gen- erates a lot of garbage. But if you check, there’s a lot that’s recyclable. When it comes to recycling at home, the kitchen still rules as the most common place to find a recy- cling box. It’s easy to forget that in other rooms of the house, like the bathroom, there are lots of recyclable items that should be making it to the blue box as well. Often, there is only a small garbage can placed beside the toilet to collect waste. But many things in the bathroom are recyclable and should not be going in the garbage. Empty plastic bottles for shampoo, con- ditioner, haircare products and body wash are all recyclable. Other materials such as toilet paper rolls, soap and toothpaste boxes are recyclable and should also be put in your blue box. The problem with only having a garbage can in the bathroom is these items will likely end up there. You may have good intentions to take them out later but that doesn’t always happen. And we all know recyclable items placed in the garbage sit in a landfill for decades. Although the typical bathroom is fair- ly small in comparison to other rooms in the house, a small recycling box should be placed wherever you can find space. It doesn’t have to be a typical blue box; a small wicker basket is both functional and fashionable to collect bathroom recycla- bles. The next time you find yourself in the bathroom, take a look around -- you will be surprised at how much is actually recy- clable. Got an item you’re not sure what to do with? Let us help you. "A lush essay film about the world's most precious resource, Watermark reunites the director (Jennifer Baichwal) and subject (art photographer Edward Burtynsky) of 2006's Manufactured Landscapes but this time puts them both on the same side of the camera," states hollywoodreporter.com. The film presents different stories from 10 countries about people and their relation- ship with water. AJAX -- The Ajax Film Circuit screens Watermark, a film about water and our relation- ship to it, on Jan. 8. povmagazine.com Whitby columnist lists some classics There are many categories in Christmas music -- pop, rhythm ‘n’ blues, orchestral, country and rock ‘n’ roll -- but perhaps the most unlikely of all and least visible in the mainstream is jazz. Yet, upon taking a clos- er look, a wealth of Christmas-themed jazz exists in the vaults of various record com- panies, particularly from the golden age of the 1950s and 1960s. Although we are merely skimming the surface, here are a handful of outstanding jazz musicians who recorded fine Christ- mas instrumentals and are generally rec- ognized as some of the best. VINCE GUARALDI: Skating, O Tannen- baum from A Charlie Brown Christmas (LP 1965). Beautiful evocative jazz. Guaraldi accom- plished pure transformations of the sea- sonal sounds. He gained wonderful results with A Charlie Brown Christmas, one of the most popular Christmas albums of all time. Besides the aforementioned titles, other notable selections include, Linus and Lucy, Greensleeves and Christmas Time Is Here. Vince Guaraldi died in 1976, just as he completed the score for another TV program, It’s Arbor Day, Charlie Brown. He was 47 years old. AHMAD JAMAL: Snow Fall from Ahmad Jamal’s Alhambra (EP 1961). Pianist, composer Ahmad Jamal, who thankfully is still recording and very much with us, earned a reputation as one of the greatest jazz figures. Snow Fall presents Jamal at his easygoing best. It is an atmo- spheric, jubilant piece of jazz. During his recording prime, in the 50s and 60s, at Chess subsidiary Argo Records out of Chi- cago, Jamal maintained enduring creativ- ity. His appeal lies in a subtle and winsome style of jazz. RAMSEY LEWIS: Here Comes Santa Claus from The Sound Of Christmas (LP 1961). Ramsey Lewis, also a renowned pianist and composer, became widely known later through The In-Crowd (a huge hit in 1965), and yet the measure of his leg- acy goes far beyond that. Along with label mate Ahmad Jamal, Lewis consistently demonstrated a high level of jazz sophis- tication. Santa Claus brings forth a live- ly conclusion that hints of things to come with The In-Crowd. KENNY BURRELL: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Merry Christmas Baby from Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (LP 1966). By the mid-1960s, Kenny Burrell’s stand- ing as a superior jazz guitarist was firmly established. Burrell’s Christmas LP is so good, it is dif- ficult to say which are the best tracks. The album opens up with the title tune, inter- preted in a leisurely manner. In contrast, the final cut, Merry Christmas Baby (an old r ‘n’ b song originally recorded by Charles Brown in 1954), unfolds into a full-fledged jazz build-up. CHARLIE PARKER: White Christmas from Jingle Bell Jam -- Jazz Christmas Clas- sics (CD 1994). Jazz icon, alto-saxophonist Charlie Parker (1920-1955) recorded a cap- tivating White Christmas in 1948. It is an amazing, striking jazz classic far removed from conventional versions of the Irving Berlin standard. Parker’s rendition of White Christmas precisely exemplifies why Christmas instrumentals, by their nature, allow year-round listening and enjoyment. Andrew Merey is a Whitby resident who’s interested in music and movie history. He has contributed articles to This Week since 2003. You can reach him at amerey@ rogers.com. Together, with the aid of a couple of other important members of the team, they have won a Canadian boxing championship, Cook in the ring as the light middleweight (154 pounds) title holder, Guyett serving as his trainer. “I had met Brandon through school. He had got into some trouble and we started to become pretty good friends,” recalls Guy- ett of days gone by at J. Clarke Richardson. “I quickly realized from altercations outside boxing that I really believed he had what it took. “It took no convincing whatsoever,” Guyett recalls of getting Cook interested in boxing. “One time I just said to him, ‘I’m going to my house, I’ve got some boxing gloves, some hand pads.’ We tried it out, I got him punch- ing a little bit. I already knew he had what it took. I took him to the gym the next day and the rest is history.” Guyett’s boxing resume includes about six moths of training at the age of 14, and a couple of amateur fights, a win and loss on his record with the Ajax Boxing Club. Now 27, Guyett developed many of his coaching philosophies from the teachings of his dad, Ron, who taught his son how to play hock- ey. Regardless of the sport, the theories are applicable. “When my dad taught me how to play, there was never any babying and that’s exactly how I train Brandon for boxing and it works perfectly,” says Guyett. His passion for boxing dates back to a time when the sport seemed on the decline, as the UFC started to garner a lot of the atten- tion and publicity. “I liked boxing back in the day when it wasn’t even cool to like boxing,” he says. “Now UFC is huge and people like combat sports, but I’m telling you, I used to sit on the edge of my seat watching boxing and I didn’t know anyone else who liked it.” He walked into the Tiller gym in Ajax about seven years ago and started coaching. Another fighter in his stable, Frankie Rill, has since moved on to Germany, a heavyweight with a 4-0 record and three knockouts. The constant has been Cook, who is now 12-0 with seven knockouts, earning a Cana- dian title in June after knocking out Fitz Vanderpool in the first round. Guyett and Cook practically live on the same street in Ajax, and work together at Pro-Tech Glass in Scarborough. “He’s definitely more than a friend,” says Guyett of the relationship that has devel- oped over the years. “I’ve got a couple of close friends and Brandon is one. It doesn’t hurt that we enjoy the exact same things. “Having a relationship with Brandon has been great. Just seeing him succeed has been great for me.” Guyett talks proudly of the team that has been assembled around Cook, including cut man Carlos Varela, strength and condition- ing coach Andrew Williams, and promoter Tyler Buxton. He substitutes team for fam- ily when speaking of the tight-knit group. He also praises the Ajax Boxing Club for turning over a key and letting them come and go as they please for training. Even with the contribution each brings, Guyett deflects a lot of the credit to Cook. “He puts in the work. No one else is in the ring but him,” says Guyett. “I don’t have 12 wins, he does. Great coaches don’t make great fighters. Great fighters make great coaches. As good as Brandon makes me look, that’s all it is. “When you get under the lights at the Her- shey Centre, nobody cares what happened in the eight weeks leading up to the fight. There are so many life stresses that can ruin a boxing career. That’s one thing Brandon does extremely well, he stays focused and dedicated to what his goals are.” Originally, those goals were to win a Cana- dian title. With that accomplished, Guy- ett says the bar has to go higher, potentially reaching for a world title. Guyett is in Cook’s corner AJAX -- Mike Guyett barks out instructions to Brandon Cook during a boxing card held at Casino Rama earlier this year. Ron Pietroniro / Metroland Jenn Wakefield off to Olympics DURHAM -- There will be at least two from Durham Region taking part in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Newcastle’s Tara Watchorn and Picker- ing’s Jennifer Wakefield were among the 21 players named by Hockey Canada Monday to the national women’s team that will try to run its string of gold medals at the Olympic Games to four. It will mark the Olympic debut for both Watchorn, a 23-year-old defence- man, and Wakefield, a 24-year-old forward. “Narrowing our roster down was extremely difficult due to the depth of the female game in our country, but we’re abso- lutely thrilled to announce the 21 players who will defend our gold medal in Russia,” said head coach Kevin Dineen in a Hockey Canada press release. “We’re confident the players who will travel this final stretch on the road to Sochi will do so with passion, perse- verance and performance that will make all Canadians proud.” In addition to its three gold medals, Can- ada’s national women’s team also claimed the silver medal at the 1998 Olympic Win- ter Games in Nagano, Japan, the inaugural event for the female game. Wakefield has played for Canada at the past three world championships, winning gold in the United States in 2012 and silver in Switzerland the year before, while Watchorn was part of the 2011 team. Both players are graduates of Boston University. The Canadian team is comprised of three goalies, six defencemen and 12 for- wards, and includes a dozen players who won gold at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Before heading to Russia, Canada and the U.S. face off in the final two games of a six-game exhibition series, Sat- urday, Dec. 28 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota and then 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The Olympic tournament runs from Saturday, Feb. 8, when Canada takes on Switzerland on the opening day, and culmi- nates Thursday, Feb. 20 with the gold medal game. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 3 24 AP IT’S FREE!Sign up today at www.wagjag.com Save up to 95% brought to you by your trusted hometown Metroland Newspapers Oshawa•Whitby•Clarington News Adver tiserTHE The News Since 1866Since1869Since1970 Since 1991Since1965 dA tiser swehe NTy b uoy ot thguorb oningtlary•Chitba•WwOsha sweNEHT $99 for 2 i-Lipo Laser Lypolysis Laser Fat Reduction Treatments at Zaarah Touch For Paradise (a $398 Value) Discount:75% SAVE $299 $49 for a Full Colour,Cut and Style from Hair By Alex (a $80 Value) $17 for 1 Year of American Content from USAccess (a $35 Value) Discount:50%Discount:51% SAVE $40 SAVE $18 $25 for 1 Month of Unlimited Yoga Classes from Yoga 101 Degrees (a $150 Value) Discount:83% SAVE $125 Discount:85% SAVE $170 $29 for 1 Professional Home Teeth Whitening Kit from Light Smile Express (a $199 Value) $68 for a 1-Hour Rejuvenating Spa Package including an AROMA Massage,Facial with a Collagen Treatment and a Foot, Hand or Scalp Massage from Nouveau Day Spa (a $150 Value) Discount:55% SAVE $82 du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 3 25 AP REAL ESTATE SALESWe're Hiring! *We pay course fees*Licensing Training & Support*7 Locations Considering, Licensed or In course, contact… David Brereton1-888-472-2767david-brereton@coldwellbanker.ca www.BecomeARealtor.ca*Conditions apply*Coldwell Banker R.M.R.
