Drop in enrolment leads
to dropped classes
DURHAM -- After more than 500
students didn’t show up for class
this year in Durham’s public high
schools, courses have been can-
celled and teachers have been
cut.
Superintendent Mark Joel said
522 fewer students enrolled in
high school in 2013-2014 than was
expected. As a result, and to be fis-
cally responsible, he said 29 occa-
sional teachers’ contracts will end
after first semester, and 16 perma-
nent teachers will be deemed sur-
plus and are being shifted to other
schools, he said.
“Staffing makes up 86 per cent
of the board budget so it’s very
important that it’s accurate and
very, very tight,” he said.

Durham public

Durham District
School Board sees 522
fewer students this year
Kristen Calis
kcalis@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- After more than 500 students
didn’t show up for class this year in Dur-
ham’s public high schools, courses have
been cancelled and teachers have been
cut.
Superintendent Mark Joel said 522 fewer
students enrolled in high school in 2013-
2014 than was expected. As a result, and
to be fiscally responsible, he said 29 occa-
sional teachers’ contracts will end after first
semester, and 16 permanent teachers will
be deemed surplus and are being shifted to
other schools, he said.
“Staffing makes up 86 per cent of the
board budget so it’s very important that it’s
accurate and very, very tight,” he said.
Thirteen of the occasional teachers have
been called back already.
Mr. Joel said these changes will save the
board about $2.5 million.
Ontario Secondary School Teachers’
Federation District 13 (Durham) president
Dave Barrowclough said the provincial
funding formula is the big reason for these
cuts. When enrolment is down, the board
receives less money from the Province.
“It’s all based per pupil rather than need,”
he said.
A number of courses -- mostly low-
enrolled electives and non-instructional
courses -- have been cut for second semes-
ter.
“It’s an unfortunate situation and one
we’ve been working to try to minimize the
impact on students,” said Mr. Joel. “We’ve
made as many cuts as we can in a non-
classroom situation.”
But students are still scrambling to find
alternate classes.
For students in the Port Perry High School
yearbook program, which runs over two
semesters, the news was hard to take. The
yearbook students must now wrap up their
product by the end of January, provide a
refund to students, sponsors and the pro-
duction company or find a teacher willing
to take on the yearbook as an extracurricu-
lar activity, explained Madison Nodelman-
Williams, co-editor of the yearbook.
“If it’s something we have to finish in four
weeks, it’s not something we’re going to be
proud of,” she said.
The Build a House program, which has
students from across the board actual-
ly building a house for credit, will also be
cancelled next semester.
“It’s a great program, but it’s expensive to
run,” said Mr. Barrowclough. “How many
credits do you get out of it at the end of the
day? That’s how you have to look at it.”
The low enrolment affects the entire
board. According to Scugog Trustee Caro-
lyn Morton, at Eastdale CVI in Oshawa, 18
classes will be lost for the second semester.
Mr. Joel said the guidance depart-
ments will work with students to choose
courses. If parents have any questions, they
should call the schools.
Trustee Morton acknowledged that stu-
dents who changed their minds and over-
ly ambitious enrolment projections by the
school board can “both” be blamed for this
problem.
“Maybe our projections were high,” said
Trustee Morton.
But enrolment has been dropping across
Ontario, said Mr. Barrowclough.
He added a lot of students are no lon-
ger taking a ‘victory lap’ as they had in the
past.
In the Durham Catholic District School
Board, enrolment is down by 128.
But mainly due to retirements scheduled
for the end of first semester, the board does
not foresee any redundancy or layoff notic-
es to permanent teachers, or a surplus situ-
ation, said superintendent Michael Gray in
an e-mail.
Currently, the board doesn’t know if there
will be a need to cancel courses, he said.

PICKERING -- Nya Sitaram, the daughter of a police officer, and Tammy Keegan,
a station duty officer, offered gifts to June Noble during Durham Regional Police’s
fourth annual Senior’s Christmas outreach program at Bay Ridges Long Term Care
Centre earlier this month. Officers brought gifts and spent time chatting with resi-
dents of long-term care homes this Christmas. Many seniors are alone during the
holidays and frontline DRP officers want to remind them they are valued and impor-
tant members of our community.

Family and safety: Merry Christmas
Giddy kiddies, grumpy
grandpa and grateful
guests -- Christmas is a
time when joy and chaos
collide to create wonderful
holiday memories.
But those memories can turn to night-
mares if proper precautions aren't taken to
ensure a safe, healthy and happy holiday.
Before guests start ringing the doorbell this
Christmas, take a few moments to consider
some safety tips to help make this Christ-
mas a happy one in the memory bank.
Christmas can be a fire hazard waiting to
happen with overloaded outlets, torn wrap-
ping paper, scented candles, and chestnuts
roasting on an open fire.
The Canada Safety Council has no short-
age of safety tips at this time of year:
• Keep trees away from a heat source such
as a radiator, heating duct or sunny window,
and even the television. Remove the tree
within 10 to 14 days -- even the freshest tree
is likely to be dried out by then.
• Avoid using angel hair (glass wool)
together with spray-on snowflakes because
the combination is highly combustible.
• Don't use metallic ornaments -- they
could become a shock hazard if they make
contact with defective wiring.
When it comes to wrapping paper, those
lucky enough to have a fireplace might be
tempted to burn some of the extra mess
instead of loading up the garbage with it, but
the Canada Safety Council warns against
such action.
• Gift wrapping, boxes, cartons and other
packaging burns too quickly and hot and
should not be burned inside the fireplace.
Homeowners should be just as careful
with electricity as they are around an open
flame.
• Don't overload wall outlets, even for a
short time.
• Make sure all extension cords are CSA
certified.
And because kitchen cooking can be at
its highest volume at Christmas, and grease
and fat fires are the top cause of Canadian
home fires, it's good to know what to do if
something ignites.
• Smother flames by covering the pan with
a lid.
• Turn off the heat.
• Use baking soda (flour can be explosive)
on shallow grease fires -- never use water.
• Don't turn on the overhead fan as it could
spread the fire.
At the end of the day, Christmas is about
joy and happiness.
Keeping your loved ones safe is the great-
est gift of all.
The season of giving ...
To the editor:
Recently, a kind gentleman helped me
out of a potentially dangerous situation. I
was in the parking lot of No Frills in Whitby
when a man told me my rear tire was almost
flat.
He told me I could not drive on it the way
it was. He drove home and came back with
an air pump and filled up my tire. I drove it
directly to the dealership. I was advised all
four rims were leaking. This gentleman took
time out of his busy day to help a stranger
and I am thankful for his kindness. Merry
Christmas to a wonderful person.

Y ou listening, Santa?
To the editor:
If I could sit on Santa’s lap and ask him for
whatever I wanted, I would tell him that I’d
like the world’s children to have the same
access to clean water, nutrition, immuniza-
tion and education that my children have.
I’d also tell him that I would like my gov-
ernment to consider giving more money
to fund to these projects and that I’d gladly
make sacrifices to ensure this equality.
Alas, I am 42 and no longer welcome on
Santa’s knee. Santa, are you listening?

Don’t hibernate
this winter
This winter, resist your impulse to hiber-
nate and get outdoors instead! Whether for
a few hours on snowshoes or a few days in
a heated canvas tent -- discover the natural
wonders of winter. You won’t be disappoint-
ed.
Winter offers nature lovers the chance
to experience nature in an unhurried and
quiet way. Animals have their own ways of
dealing with the harsh winter climate. Most
birds head south, some travel to the far-
thest reaches of South America, while oth-
ers venture just a few hundred kilometres
to find food and shelter. But a hardy 10 per
cent of our birds remain in the same habitat
year-round.
Some of our mammals, including black
bears, groundhogs and chipmunks, hiber-
nate in dens and emerge only when tem-
peratures begin to rise in early spring. All of
our reptiles and amphibians disappear dur-
ing the winter months. Frogs and salaman-
ders overwinter at the bottom of ponds and
lakes -- with some actually freezing solid.
Snakes head for underground chambers
called hibernacula that shelter them.
While many of us humans like to remain
in the comfort of our homes and let winter
pass us by, we do not hibernate. If we did,
we would miss a fascinating season for
observing and revelling in nature -- from
snowshoe hares clad in their winter white to
tiny “snow fleas” (also known as springtails)
-- hopping madly on patches of melting
snow.
Ontario Nature is a network of 150
nature-focused groups that coordinate win-
ter outings such as owl prowls, snowshoe
hikes and a Christmas Bird Count. The
Nature Network calendar of events can be
found here: http://ontarionature.org/discov-
er/member_groups/NN_calendar.

PICKERING -- Metroland Durham Region
Media Group had the lucky opportunity to
sit down with Santa Claus at the Pickering
Town Centre. As he got ready for his big trip,
we asked him a few questions about the
magic of Christmas, holiday spirit and who
made his naughty and nice list this year.
Q. How does Santa deliver all of those toys
in one night?
A: It’s very magical. Don’t forget, I have a
lot of help back in the North. The elves help
me a lot. A lot of people don’t see that, but
they kind of travel with me so they hand
me things when I do the delivery. I can also
be very fast. I have a few sidekicks but you
know something, Santa doesn’t like to tell
all his secrets... so I will keep it magical.
Q. What makes the reindeer fly?
A: Well, it’s been a long story. Rudolph is
one of my favourites. There is hot and cold
in the atmosphere. When the sleigh lifts off
the ground, because the ground is so cold
and the atmosphere is warm and you get in
the middle, the cold air pushes you up and
the hot air keeps you up. That’s how we get
across the universe.
Q: So there is science behind this?
A: Definitely, but we can’t tell all of our sci-
ence.
Q. Can the magic of Christmas ever stop?
A: Well the Grinch tried to do that, but it
didn’t work. I could name a few other people
who tried to stop it, but guess what? When
kids are happy and the heart grows fonder,
how can you stop that? How can anybody
stop a good thing? It makes people happy.
They smile at Christmas, it brings families
together. Because sometimes we do things
we really don’t like to do, but I think Christ-
mas brings a lot of happiness back together.
Q: Is it the kids, If they believe in you?
A: Kids keep me going, because the chil-
dren are really for me and I really appreciate
that. So that’s what helps keep me going so I
want to remit back. You know how they say,
give back, that’s exactly how I feel.
Q. Are Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus on
your naughty or nice list?
A: You know, when we think about things it
depends...

College
investigating
Pickering
dentist
charged with
voyeurism
Jeff Mitchell
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- The provincial body
that governs dentists has launched
its own investigation into allega-
tions that a Pickering practitioner
concealed a camera in a wash-
room at his clinic.
A committee currently investi-
gating allegations of voyeurism
against Dr. Philip Willenburg has
the power to recommend a hear-
ing before a disciplinary tribunal,
and could impose an interim sus-
pension on the dentist, said Irwin
Fefergrad, registrar of the Royal
College of Dental Surgeons of
Ontario.
An immediate suspension could
be imposed if it’s determined the
public is at risk, Mr. Fefergrad said.
“It is discretionary,” he said.
“(The committee) has to believe
the member may be likely to
expose the patient to harm or inju-
ry.”
The college’s investigation is in
its early stages, Mr. Fefergrad said.
It was begun after Durham police
announced charges against Dr.
Willenburg this week.
Police were called in Dec. 11 after
staff at the Kingston Road clin-
ic discovered an operating cam-
era in a washroom. Investigators,
who seized computers and video
equipment, believe the camera
was used to record activities in the
washroom, police said. No footage
of patients appeared to have been
captured on the day police were
called in. An investigation contin-
ues.
Dr. Willenburg, 53, of Toronto, is
charged with voyeurism. He was
released on his own recognizance.
Mr. Fefergrad said Thursday the
college will co-operate with police
as the investigation continues. In
the event the allegations lead to
charges before a disciplinary tri-
bunal penalties could include
revocation or suspension of the
accused dentist’s licence.
Dr. Willenburg has no disciplin-
ary history with the college, he
said.
Voyeurism carries a maximum
penalty of five years in prison.

Pickering
Panthers
owner Steve
Tuchner leads
resurgence
Hockey club on path
to respectability
Brad Kelly
bkelly@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- There were times when
Pickering Panthers owner Steve Tuchner
took a quiet moment to himself to ponder
what he had got himself into.
Those times aren’t anywhere near as fre-
quent these days. In fact, they rarely exist.
He’s the first to admit that he hasn’t sin-
gle-handedly turned the franchise around,
spreading the credit to everyone involved
in the organization who has made a con-
tribution. But he has to accept the fact that
he has spearheaded the operation, giving it
the guidance and leadership it desperately
lacked.
A quick look at the standings of the Ontar-
io Junior Hockey League confirms that the
Panthers have finally turned the corner to
respectability, and still continue to evolve
as a franchise.
“Running a team, managing a team,
owning a team, it’s an unbelievable expe-
rience and unbelievable amount of plea-
sure,” says Tuchner of the experience since
he purchased the hockey club in the spring
of 2012. “When you get something at the
beginning that’s in rough shape, it affords
you the opportunity to make improve-
ments.
“We’re moving in a positive direction. I’m
excited that it’s coming together.”
When Tuchner purchased the team, he
quickly went to work to install a solid set of
core values in the franchise. At the time of
his first interview with the News Advertiser
in March of last year, he noted the Panthers
were: “An organization in need of organi-
zation.” The Panthers had lost their identi-
ty.
He made some superficial changes --
upgrading the dressing room topped the
list -- and put Mike Galati, who had been
fired from the Panthers during the 2011-12
season, in charge of the hockey operations
side, naming him general manager and
head coach. The two had been friends for
years through hockey, and it was at Galati’s
urging that Tuchner bought the team.
“Give Galati credit,” says Tuchner. “He’s
had his ups and downs. He’s been termi-
nated from this franchise once before only
to come back.”
With some stability in the ownership and
a dedicated and loyal GM/coach in place,
Tuchner started to reconstruct the fran-
chise. His core values centred around how
players and staff were to behave, act and
conduct themselves. How to win graceful-
ly and how to be part of a community were
also part of the equation.
The benefits weren’t immediately recog-
nized on the ice, as the Panthers won just
13 of 55 games last season, finishing last
in their division, but the framework was
in place. This season, they are destined to
make the playoffs, and the winning has fos-
tered a positive attitude around the league.
Instead of selling off assets at this time of
year as players parachuted out of Pickering,
the Panthers are bringing players in to ele-
vate the team to the next level.
“It takes time to build. Losing is never
fun, but winning isn’t easy,” notes Tuchner.
“It becomes easier to get players. It
becomes a place where they no longer
don’t want to go. When they don’t want
to come here, it makes it hard. Now, it’s
becoming easier. Winners want to come
here as opposed to this being a place you
had to go.
“There’s another step. There are champi-
onship teams and we are now a competi-
tive team. Being from a bad team to a com-
petitive team, that’s a quantum leap. To go
from competitive to a team that competes
for a championship is the next step.”
Tuchner, who spends his fair share of time
welcoming fans at the admission gate on
game nights, has also changed the in-game
experience. A winner of the Chuck-A-Puck
promotion pocketed $600 this season. He
has heard countless stories from fans with
favourable memories of the Panthers, and
he is trying to restore that passion.
“I want the people to come back. I think
they were ripped off for a number of years,”
he says. “They want to like the team, but
the team didn’t earn their following. That’s
sad. I want to win the crowd back.”
The Toronto resident has been impressed
with the operation of the league since join-
ing the fraternity, crediting its top execu-
tives and directors with building a strong
brand and having great vision. Cutting the
number of teams from 35 a few years back
to just 22 has strengthened the product on
the ice.
“It has elevated the quality of hockey and
brought back the interest in scouts. There’s
22 teams, 22 kids on a roster, 450 kids total
in the league. The value of each spot for
each kid has elevated and that’s what mat-
ters,” he says.
PICKERING -- Pickering Panthers owner Steve Tuchner has guided the Ontario Junior
Hockey League team back to respectability. After being at or near the bottom of
the standings for the past five seasons, the Panthers are in second place in the North
Division, and are in position to be in the playoffs. Tuchner is in his second season as
owner of the franchise. Photo by Walter Passarella
Derek Gillespie
falls shy of goal
at Q-school
LA QUINTA, CALIFORNIA -- Two bad
holes in one round cost Oshawa golfer
Derek Gillespie his goal of finishing among
the top-45 during the six-round Web.com
Tour qualifying tournament in La Quinta,
Calif.
Gillespie ended up tied for 67th among
the 152 who took part, which should still
allow him some opportunity to play during
the 2014 season.
The winner, American Zack Fischer, is
now exempt for the entire season on the
Web.com Tour, which is one rung below
the PGA Tour.
Those who finished from second to
10th are exempt until the third reshuffle of
the 2014 season, which occurs after 12th
event, and those from 11th to 45th are
exempt until the second reshuffle, after the
eighth event.
The remainder will be slotted accord-
ing to their finish, with their first re-ranking
taking place after the fourth tournament of
the year.
Gillespie was where he needed to be
through the first four rounds, as scores of
71, 67, 72 and 67 had him at 11-under par
and among the top-45.
It was round five that hurt him most,
however, as two double bogeys contribut-
ed to a three-over 75. A final round of one-
under 71 on Dec. 17 wasn’t enough to lift
him back up.
Overall, the 35-year-old Gillespie had
just those two double bogeys over the six
rounds, along with 14 bogeys, 65 pars and
27 birdies, leaving him at nine-under par
and three strokes shy of the top-45.
The 152 participants who competed at
the qualifying tournament will join approxi-
mately 90 other players who already
secured Web.com Tour status through
2013 performance.
The 2014 Web.com Tour season gets
underway Feb. 6-9 at the Panama Claro
Championship in Panama City.

NOVENA TO ST. JUDE
May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored,
glorified, loved and preserved throughout
the world now and forever. O Sacred
Heart of Jesus pray for us. St. Jude,
Worker of Miracles, pray for us. St. Jude
Helper of the Hopeless, pray for us.
Say this prayer 9 times a day. By the
eighth day your prayers will be
answered. It has never been known to
fail, never. Publication must be promised.
Thanks to St. Jude for prayer answered.

In Loving Memory at Christmas
This poem is dedicated to our Loving Mom & Caring Dad & beautiful Big Sis
at this Special Christmas Time
Always there by our side,
Whenever we laughed,
Whenever we cried,
Always giving us the push to do our best,
To excel better than the rest.
Our Dad is a defi nition for the ULTIMATE DAD,
Providing us shelter and a better tomorrow,
Our Mom is our GUARDIAN ANGEL,
The light of our soul,
Always there to listen,
Without a fret or regret.
Our dear Big Sis, is the greatest there is,
And amazing in every way.
We greatly admire and look up to her,
Each and every day.
In good times or bad times,
They took care of us and loved our family dearly,
They provided warmth whenever we were cold,
The feeling of being secure whenever we were frightened.
All three are SPECIAL,
All three are UNIQUE,
All three are one of a kind,
The unsinkables ...
This poem to you, Mum, Dad, Anna
Shows our gratitude and happiness for being a Family,
Wishing You a Very Merry Christmas
in Heaven and sending You our ETERNAL LOVE
Tiamo Tanti! Tanti! Tanti!
Always with Love and Never Forgotten

BRAD’S CHRISTMAS WISH
May you wish for what you get,
And may you get just what you need.
May you have a long life of love,
And free of hate and greed.
May all be forgiven,
In this life we’re living.
There is no greater gift in life,
Than that of selfless giving.
Let’s not forget He,
Who was born, who had no gifts to give.
Who traded off His own life,
So the rest of us could live.
His power lay not in his strength,
Nor His skill with sword.
His power lie in his gift of love,
And skill with spoken word.
And if you don’t believe in the Father,
and his Son,
Then believe in the power of just one person,
And see what He has done.
His story, and others like him,
Have changed the world forever,
History has taught me this,
Never to say never.
To friends, and family, all the best,
In this Christmas season.
May the spirit of giving live on in you,
Even if for no reason.
And to those of you now come and gone;
Those no longer with us.
I’ll see you when I get there, until then,
Merry Christmas

Fitzgerald, Edward Charles (Ted) - It is with
great sorrow that we announce the passing
of Ted Fitzgerald at age 78 on December 18,
2013 at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay.
Loving father of Colleen (Doug) and the
loving grandfather of Emerson and Duncan.
Fondly remembered by friends and family.
He worked as a stationary engineer at the
Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in
Pickering, and retired to Algonquin Highlands
in 2004 to enjoy fishing and afternoons on
the deck. The family will receive friends for a
memorial gathering at McEACHNIE FUNERAL HOME, 28 Old Kingston Road,
Ajax, 905 428-8488, on Monday December
30th from 10 to 11am. A Funeral Service will
be held in the Chapel at 11:00 am. Memorial
donation to the Canadian Daschund Rescue
or Canadian Cancer Society would be
appreciated. Special thanks to all the people
who kept Dad independent and well over the
past year: friends in Minden, visiting nurses,
and doctors at Minden hospital. Online
condolences may be placed at www.mceachniefuneral.ca
