Mr. Lue was just 21 years old and working as a mechanical apprentice at a car repair shop in Pickering in September 2009 when the car he was in was crushed by a 20-tonne scrap yard crane, and then subsequently dropped from a height of 15 feet. The determined athlete, who was a star track athlete at Pickering High School and had dreams of competing in the Olympics as a hurdler, suffered a broken back, fractured neck, broken ribs, and spinal cord damage. See PICKERING page 9 Pickering school’s Princess Party honours former student Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Olivia Grace White was a little girl who symbolized love, dance and laughter. Kind, sweet, loving, giving, inclusive, brave and selfless are the words her family uses to describe the girl, who died at the age of five. “She was an unusual child actu- ally because she was so loving and giving and she just brought a lot of laughter to all of the people who ever met her,” said her grandma, Karin Aird, whom Olivia affec- tionately referred to as ‘Oma,’ at a special event held in the girl’s memory on Dec. 18 at Highbush Public School in Pickering. Olivia, who was a senior kinder- garten student at the school, died from flu-like symptoms overnight on Dec. 26, 2012. “It was, of course, the most dev- astating thing that could happen to a family,” said her mother, Jen- nifer White, in a press release. Since Olivia absolutely loved princesses and Disney, her par- ents knew she would have wanted other children to visit Walt Disney World, like she did. So they created Wishes for Olivia, a group dedicated to rais- ing money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Canada, which grants wishes to children with serious medical conditions. Angie Wilcox was thrown for a loop last week, when her six-year-old daughter piped up from the back seat as they turned into the parking lot at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School on Finch Avenue. “She said, ‘mom, what’s abortion?’ I was blown away. I said, ‘where did you hear that word?’” says Ms. Wilcox, who sits on the par- ent-teacher council at the school. A neon lettered sign posted outside St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church -- which is located next to the school -- read, “I have noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born,” a quote from Ronald Reagan. The sign was up for about a week, and was visible from Finch Avenue as well as from the dropoff and pickup area of the school parking lot. This week it was changed to read “Mary and Joseph chose life and changed the world forever.” Neil MacCarthy, director of public relations and communications for the Archdiocese of Toronto, said the sign was organized by a pro- life group from the parish. He noted life issues are “quite prominent” during the Christmas season. Ms. Wilcox says it was the “in-your-face” use of the word abortion that concerned her. The News Advertiser received calls from other parents who expressed similar con- cerns, but declined to have their names pub- lished fearing backlash from the church or school. Also raising concerns was Heather LeRoux. She lives nearby and drives past the church several times a day with her sons, aged 7 and 9, in the car. “My older son asked about what it meant and it’s not a conversation I really wanted to have at his age,” she says. The Durham Region Influenza Bulletin for the week of Dec. 1 to 7 describes local flu activity as “moder- ate.” There were four confirmed cases of influenza in Durham that week, and 13 cases documented so far for the 2013/2014 season. “When we start getting positive cases, it indicates influenza is definitely circulating in Durham Region,” says Anne Grant, a senior public health inspector with the health department. The numbers only reflect flu cases confirmed by a test at a public health lab. Many people don’t go to the doctor when they have the flu -- or aren’t tested by their doctor -- which means the data reflects only a portion of actual cases in the community. So far the health department has administered about 3,000 flu shots at its community clinics. Local residents can also get the shot at doctor’s offices, pharmacies and walk-in clinics. “It’s important for people to know it’s not too late to get the vaccine,” Ms. Grant says. While the shot is the best line of defence, she also stresses hand washing, cough etiquette, touching your face as little as possible and staying at home when sick. Last year the health department documented 250 total confirmed flu cases in Durham, with 19 recorded as of the week of Dec. 1. The risks and benefits of medications must be carefully considered. Harmful drug effects rank fifth among the greatest preventable health threats to older adults, account for as much as 17 per cent of hospital admissions and costs $49 million. Side effects may arise from misuse, over- use, underuse, and interactions with other drugs, foods and alcohol. Seniors are vulnerable due to the effects of aging and living with chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Over- the-counter medications are not without concern; anti-inflammatory drugs can cause bleeding, worsen blood pressure and damage kidneys. Medications for nausea and itching can cause confusion, falls, and sleepiness. Use these suggestions to help you understand your medications and keep you safe: 1. Link with your primary care provider for regular monitoring. 2. Bring all over the counter, herbal and prescription medications to your appoint- ments. 3. Know your medications. Keep an updated list including allergies and adverse reactions. 4. Ask your pharmacist about Meds Check or call 1-866-255-6701. 5. Call TeleHealth for advice at 1-866- 797-0000. 6. Talk to your primary care provider and/or pharmacist before starting or stop- ping medications. Ask for help to organize, understand and properly store and dispose of your medi- cations or call 1-866-255-6701. Michelle Acorn Newtonville Enjoy a ‘holiday’ gift, and Merry Christmas To the editor: What ‘holiday’ is it? I wonder if I’m not the only one asking the question, given that ‘Happy Holidays’ seems to be the norm in store windows. Somehow buying and sending ‘holiday’ cards seems to lack sincerity, as does put- ting up the ‘holiday’ tree and decorating it with ‘holiday’ decorations. Even worse are those songs you hear everywhere, you know the ones that say ‘Christmas’ this or ‘Christmas’ that. Come Dec. 25 I’ll be giving presents, but for what ‘holiday’ and by what example? The one set just over 2,000 years ago or the one from some guy in a red suit? Enjoy your ‘holiday’ present and at the same time have a Merry Christmas. David Avery Oshawa We applaud a Pickering church’s decision to change a public sign that had children asking questions about abortion. Christmas is not the time to discuss this issue. St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, locat- ed next to the same-named elementary school, for a week had a neon-lettered sign that read, “I have noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born,” a quote from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. It was clearly visible not only to passersby but also most notably to young children as they arrived at and were picked up from school. It made things uncomfort- able for parents, including Angie Wilcox, who sits on the parent-teacher council at the school. One recent day as they arrived at school, her six-year-old daughter said from the back seat, 'mom, what's abortion'. Ms. Wilcox was floored and told her daughter it's an "adult word." We heard from other parents who weren't pleased with the sign but didn’t want to speak up. The church has replaced the message to read, “Mary and Joseph chose life and changed the world forever.” Catholics like any other faith group are entitled to their beliefs. In the case of abor- tion, it is a serious issue for Catholics because their faith tells them that an unborn child is a person. Thus abortion is murder. And since unborn children can't speak for themselves, Catholics believe it's an issue that shouldn't be avoided but brought to the forefront. It's true that those on the anti-abortion side of the issue have used far more dramat- ic means to make their point. But, ultimately, as Heather LeRoux said when referring to her eldest boy's inquiry about the first message, "it’s not a conversa- tion I really wanted to have at his age." Neil MacCarthy, director of public rela- tions and communications for the Archdio- cese of Toronto, told us the sign was orga- nized by a pro-life group from the parish and that life issues are “quite prominent” during the Christmas season. “It’s an appropriate time to have a conver- sation about it,” he said. We disagree. Even with the toned-down message, the sign prompts questions, and not when a parent chooses or doesn't choose to speak about abortion with a youngster. But the main issue is the timing, given that we are in the Christmas season. The message from the Pickering church at this time of year should focus on the joy of the season. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 1 9 , 2 0 1 3 7 AP ChristmasCarols2010 DURHAM REGION MEDIA GROUP PRESENTED BY: hristmas arols 2013 D U R H A M D I V I S I O N samtsirhsamtsirh sloraslora samtsirhsamtsirh sloraslorasloraslora samtsirhsamtsirhsamtsirhsamtsirhsamtsirhsamtsirhCslorasloraslorasloraslorasloraslorasloraCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCslorasloraslorasloraslorasloraCCCCCsloraslorasloraslorasloraslorasloraCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC have ar rived... Heat butter over moderate heat until foam subsides, add in onions and cook over low to medium heat, stirring every few minutes, adding in a little wine as needed to release the onions from the base of the pan and assist with moisture while the onions caramelize. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Continue cooking until onions are very soft and dark brown in colour -- about 25 to 30 minutes. Add sugar and balsamic vinegar and cook five more minutes. Remove from heat and stir in half of the rosemary. Re-season if necessary. 3. Place puff pastry on table and brush with beaten egg along all edges (about one inch around) -- this will seal in all of the ingredients. 4. When onions are cooled, spread over puff pastry, leaving one inch on all sides. Next, layer grated cheese. 5. Starting from the bottom, roll puff pastry like a pinwheel -- press gently on the seam when finished rolling to secure filling. Brush the top of the pastry with egg wash and sprinkle with remaining rosemary. 6. This can now be frozen for later use, or chilled for 20 minutes, then sliced into 1-inch rounds. 7. Bake in a pre-heated oven 375 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes and cheese is bubbling. Jason Liebregts / Metroland Christmas bird count trumpets good news It was a bit of a shock, finding Gull Lake frozen when we got up to Minden for the Christmas Bird Count on the weekend. The deepest lake in Haliburton County, it’s always the last to ice over. My husband and I spent much of last year’s count canoeing among the islands, finding lingering loons and ducks tucked away in sheltered coves and inlets. This year was a whole different story. We’d been following the below-zero fore- casts all week, and Neil and Linda Cutler, who live high on a hill with a sweeping view of Gull Lake, reported a big freeze- up on Wednesday night. Still, it came as a surprise to find just a single patch of open water way out in the middle by Fri- day afternoon, one that closed completely overnight. So there we were at dawn on an Arctic- looking Sandy Bay, hoping to spot a king- fisher, or at least a few ducks, where the Gull River’s swift outflow keeps a ribbon of water running. I was bundled up like a snowman and wading through a foot of snow -- another shock -- but the minus 26 C temperature, complete with a northeast wind, didn’t stop a female goldeneye from diving bus- ily for fish, or a pair of mallards from pad- dling along the ice edge. Upstream we found two red-breasted mergansers. Like all participants on the count, we spent the next nine hours searching for other shrinking patches of water in the 15-km count circle, checking cottage- country feeders for flocks of chickadees, nuthatches and goldfinches, and tromp- ing snowmobile trails in wooded valleys listening for woodpeckers, snow buntings, ravens -- any birds we could find. And then diving back into the car to warm up. All in all, it was surprising that we found as many species as we did: 38. Especially waterfowl, which included all three mer- ganser species, black ducks, one loon and a single solitary kingfisher. Plus the biggest surprise of all: a family of trumpeter swans paddling regally in the open water below Moore Falls. Efforts by the MNR to reintro- duce these black-billed natives, extirpat- ed from Ontario by European settlers two centuries ago, are obviously paying off. Trumpeters were new to the count. Another highlight was the record num- ber of bald eagles tallied. Six perched in trees around the Scotch Line dump with an army of ravens, ready to scavenge for scraps delivered by a steady stream of humans. Four other eagles were seen cir- cling in a kettle, heading south. Taking part in a Christmas Bird Count is a great way to get acclimatized to win- ter. Keep pets safe, happy this Christmas The holidays are exciting, but it’s important to remember the potential dangers to pets. The following tips are from the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Ani- mals. • Do not let your pet eat chocolate. It con- tains theobromine, which can be poison- ous to many animals, including cats, dogs and ferrets. The less sweet the chocolate, the more toxic it can be. Just small amounts of unsweetened baking chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, hyperactivi- ty and increased thirst, urination and heart rate. • Maintain your pet’s regular diet. Just one “special” meal during the holidays may give your dog or cat severe indigestion and diarrhea. Holiday dinner leftovers can also be dangerous. Poultry bones, for example, can splinter and cause blockages, says the OSPCA. Greasy, spicy and fatty foods can cause stomach upset; spoiled or moldy foods could cause food poisoning, tremors or seizures. And don’t forget to secure the garbage. • Keep alcoholic drinks away from pets. If pets ingest alcohol, they can get very sick and weak and may go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure. • Keep toxic florals out of your pet’s reach. If a cat or dog eats mistletoe, they could suf- fer gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems, says the OSPCA. Ingesting holly can cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and lethargy. Common holiday plants such as poinsettias are low in toxicity, but can still cause mild vomiting or nausea if ingested by your pet, and irritate your pet’s mouth. Lilies, found in many holiday floral arrangements, can cause kidney failure in cats. Beware of toxic varieties including: Asian, Casa Blanca, Japanese Show, Stargazer and Tiger. Try fake flowers instead. • Be careful of Christmas tree dangers, from top to bottom. Christmas tree water may contain fertilizers, and can cause stom- ach upset if pets drink it. Stagnant tree water may be full of bacteria, which could cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Decora- tions like ribbons are very attractive to pets, especially cats, and if ingested can cause intestinal obstruction. Also attractive, spar- kly lights can become life threatening if your pet chews the cords. Consider decorating your tree, or at least the bottom third, with ornaments that are less likely to attract your pet’s attention, such as dried non-toxic flow- ers, wood, fabric or pinecones, suggests the OSPCA. Make sure to pick up tinsel, ribbons, ornaments and ornament hooks that fall to the floor immediately. Secure your tree so that it can’t be toppled or knocked over. Supervise your pet and use barriers like baby gates and topical pet deterrents, available in pet stores, as necessary to keep your pet safe from holiday temptations. • If you have children’s toys under your tree, be as cautious with your pet playing with them as you would a child. Toys with removable parts or small pieces pose a seri- ous choking hazard for pets too. • Be careful of potential pet escapes. With guests coming and going, take extra care that your cat or dog does not get outside and become lost. You could place your pet in a quiet, safe and comfortable part of the house away from all of the guests, but with access to food, water and litter box. Alternatively, you may wish to use a crate or a baby gate for short periods to keep them safe and sound. • Do not give pets as surprise gifts. While the OSPCA says planned pet adoptions are fine, ensure that you will be home to pro- vide the care and attention your furry family member will require as they adjust to their new environment. Fido, it’s cold outside In this cold weather, be mindful of the cold and its potential hazards to pets. Just as a hot car can become deadly for pets in the summer, a cold car can be just as dangerous in the winter. Don’t allow cats outside, and take dogs out for short periods when they need to do their business. After trying wheelchair basketball for awhile, Mr. Lue says he was itching for an activity that would give him a chance to get outdoors more. That’s when his friends introduced him to handcycling and opened up a whole new world of opportunities. “It’s freedom all over again,” says Mr. Lue, who regularly saw physiotherapists and occupational therapists following the accident to help him adjust to life as a paraplegic. “That’s what I would say really drew me to the bike -- the fact that I can pret- ty much go wherever I please ... this has been almost like a new lease on life and it’s made me think that this might actually be my calling now.” Mr. Lue recently completed his first half marathon in Niagara Falls and now has his sights set on representing Canada in handcycling at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Paralympics. He is currently training sev- eral times a week while seeking a cycling coach and funding assistance from the community to help him along his jour- ney. “I like to say it was almost a no-brainer,” says Mr. Lue on his decision to chase this dream. “Whatever the highest level of compe- tition there is, I really want to get there. No matter what it is, and especially if it’s sports.” In between his training, Mr. Lue visits schools to tell his story and offer messages of hope and inspiration to young people. “I can honestly say I’ve never been more motivated in my life,” he says. “I’m getting to a point now where I feel like I’m doing something and I have something to strive for.” For more information, visit www. gofundme.com/anthonysrace DURHAM -- Pickering High School grad Anthony Lue, paralyzed in a freak industrial accident in Pickering, is currently training to represent Canada in handcycling at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. The workers at Victim Services are braced for the annual holiday rush, as families strug- gle to deal with domestic violence, financial stress and loss amid the bustle and imbibing of the season. “We know that there are triggers, or stres- sors, this time of year,” said Jade Harper, exec- utive director of Victim Services of Durham Region. “You have people coming together who may do everything to avoid each other 364 days a year.” The Christmas season is one of the busi- est times of year for Victim Services, which gives emotional support, practical assistance and community referrals to people affected by crime and tragedy. The agency works in collaboration with Durham Regional Police Service to assist victims of crime and tragedy, dealing with everything from motor vehicle collisions to suicide. “It could be a loss from earlier in the year,” said Stephanie Belmonte, Victim Services project co-ordinator. “Some people really anticipate the holidays as hard. Others, it just hits them. We can offer grief packages,” said Laura Burch, victim sup- port worker. “You’re not going crazy.” The majority of clients are women and chil- dren dealing with domestic violence. So far in 2013, Durham police have attend- ed more than 4,600 domestic dispute calls. Ms. Harper said she is anticipating a high number of family dispute and violence calls over December and January. Ms. Harper said that more incidents of family violence involve alcohol during the holiday period than any other time of the year. The arguments often occur over issues such as money, relation- ships ending, access to children and relatives visiting. Some of these arguments escalate to physical violence, causing injury to victims, the arrest of offenders and distress to chil- dren. Although family violence can’t be eliminat- ed with a few tips, Victim Services is offering some practical advice to help people have a calm and safe holiday season. • Set aside money to cover bills in January and February. • Don’t spend more on the holidays than you can afford. The season can be about spending time together as a family, not about buying expensive presents. • Moderate your drinking. You don’t need to drink to excess to have a good time. • Don’t drink and drive. Arrange for trans- port home before going out. • Take time out. If things become heated or stressful, go somewhere for a few hours to let things calm down. • Opt out. If a family gathering will include a past abuser, give yourself permission not to go. • Talk to someone you trust if you are feel- ing afraid or overwhelmed. • Don’t sweat the small stuff; minor prob- lems can be resolved without arguments. • Plan ahead if you share custody of chil- dren. Come to an agreement well in advance of the holidays so that children get to spend time with each parent. • Most importantly if you have any fears for your own or your children’s safety, contact the police immediately. Victim Services of Durham Region, which launched in 1998, provides two services. One is police initiated, with on-scene volunteer counsellors for victims of crime or tragedy 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The sec- ond is when victims call into the office dur- ing business hours to get emotional support, practical support and help them connect with other community services. These vic- tims don’t have to be part of a reported crime to access the support. “A quarter of the population has reported being a victim of crime,” said Ms. Harper. “We know on average 70 per cent of people don’t report a crime.” Victim Services also has access to funds to help victims change their door locks, pay for funerals and for crime scene clean-up. The non-profit charitable organization gets some funding from the Ministry of the Attorney General, as well as donations and fundrais- ing. The service is able to operate with the help of 60 dedicated on-call volunteers. For more information on Victim Services of Durham Region visit www.victimservices- durham.ca. How about a published writer? Metroland Media Group’s Durham Division is launching a new ebook writing initiative this month with a plan to run it throughout 2014 and is inviting writers in Durham Region who have an interest in fiction to consider applying to take part. We are calling the project ‘Open Book’. We are providing the opening paragraphs to a story (see Story Intro, right), setting a bare- bones plot line and want to turn over the rest of the story to local residents so they can craft the rest of the tale. We invite readers across Durham Region to apply to participate by sending us an outline for the remainder of Chapter 1. From those outline entries we will select 36 participants in the project, and then randomly select from those 36 participants three people to write the next chapter. We will choose the best submitted chapter (of the three requested) and then send chapters 1 and 2 out to the next three people to write the next chapter, and so on, until the book is complete. So, even though your work might not be selected for publication, we will acknowledge the efforts of every contributor at the end of 2014 when our ebook is published. It will be 12 chapters in total. Chapters must be between 1,500-3,000 words (absolute maximum). All participants will receive a bound copy of the book and we hope to make it available at local public libraries. If you have any questions, contact Steve Houston at 905-579-4400, ext. 2248, or via email at shouston@durhamregion.com . Illustrators wanted for ebook project We are also inviting budding and local artists to consider submitting illustrations for each chapter as part of the project. We invite residents across Durham Region to apply to participate by sending us an outline for the remainder of Chapter 1 based on the opening paragraphs published here. From those outline entries we will select 36 participants in the project, and then randomly select from those 36 participants three people to provide one illustration each for the next chapter. We will choose the best submitted illustration (of the three requested) and then send chapters 1 and 2 out to the next three people to illustrate the next chapter, and so on, until the book is complete. So, even though your work might not be selected for publication, we will acknowledge the efforts of every contributor at the end of 2014 when our ebook is published. It will be 12 chapters in total. Illustrations can be in any media, colour or black-and-white, and must be digitally scalable. If you have any questions, contact Steve Houston at 905-579-4400, ext. 2248, or via email at shouston@durhamregion.com. The lake spit Adam onto the shore soaking, cold and exhausted. He turned and sat on the beach, looking briefly back into the black water before gathering his strength and his wits for whatever the future had in store. He stood and turned again, away from the water, and walked up a small bluff, water still dripping from his clothes. When he reached the top, an expanse of field lay before him, divided by a white gravel path that meandered through the greenery. He paused on the edge of the path, its fine white limestone gravel winding a course through the field, took a deep breath, and stepped onto the stone with a soft crunch. Behind him lay Lake Ontario and his past. In front of him lay this shining path and an unclear future. Before long, he saw the sign: Welcome to Lynde Shores... Diamond Shine has gift certificates available for detailing packages that would the perfect gift for anyone on your list. Gift certificates are available for all of the packages that they offer, starting from as low as $19.95, or you can create your own custom package. This year, save someone hours of work by letting the pros clean their vehicle. It’s called detailing for a reason. At Diamond Shine, their showroom package leaves no small space untouched. To achieve a showroom look, they use toothbrushes and Q-Tips to get to the hard to reach areas. They only use the best products, to ensure superior results. Diamond Shine is open for business all year round, even if it’s just for a hand wash and dry. Before you head through the local car wash, remember that the water left on your vehicle will freeze when you get back on the road. Bring your vehicle into Diamond Shine for a wash, where it will be hand washed and chamois dried, all jambs will be dried and the locks will be blown dry. If you’ve just purchased a brand new vehicle, don’t pay the expensive cost of the dealership package, give Diamond Shine a call for a quote! With winter just around the corner, it’s a good idea to oil spray rust proof your vehicle, protecting it from the harsh elements, including snow and salt. Diamond Shine offers both semi- drip and no-drip packages. To prevent your vehicle from rusting, the solution is applied to the complete undercarriage of the vehicle, the engine compartment, including the hood, all rocker panels, hinges, inside the doors and trunk. It’s also a great time of year to have the exterior of your vehicle protected. A Diamond Shine wax will not only bring back your vehicle’s shine, it will also help protect it from the harsh winter elements. Diamond Shine has been serving the Durham Region since 1994. Diamond Shine is located at 221 Westney Rd. S., in Ajax (just north of Bayly and directly across from the Super 8 Motel). PickeringTown Centre 1885 (NC) Imagine you are standing in a cramped elevator, waiting to get out of this forced uncomfortable situation, when someone behind you sneezes. As a wave of hot air rushes out of their mouth and nose, you feel the germs droplets landing on the back of your neck causing you to shiver with repulsion. You, my friend, have just been slimed. Many people have had an experience like this, making them wish everyone had been taught how to keep their germs to themselves. Today’s best medical advice is that sneezing into the crook of our elbow or directly into a tissue is best to prevent the spread of germs. But there are many adults out there in public raised on the idea that sneezing into your hand is the way to corral your germs. The proper etiquette for this bodily function has changed over the past few decades from handkerchiefs to hands, with an emphasis on the ‘elbow shield’ coming into vogue in the 1990s. This means that people who practice the pre-90s habit of using the hand cover are likely contributing to the spread of germs – germs that will not only make their family, friends and co-workers sick, but that might circle back around to bite them a second time. So, let it be known that the recommendation for preventing the spread of cold and flu germs is to cough and sneeze into your arm, not your hand. It is also wise to get your flu shot, wash hands frequently, keep common surface areas clean and disinfected and finally, stay home if you are sick.Only you should experience your sneeze and adopting the most up-to-date sneeze etiquette will minimize your chance of getting sick, as well as those around you. But only one can claim a No. 1 song and a gold record. Ajax’s Paolo Pacampara was one of the lead singers and also sang background vocals on If You're Not Here at Christmas, a song about the important people in our lives with whom we can't spend the holidays for various reasons. The song hit No. 1 on Nielsen SoundScan's Canadian Singles Chart and has been certi- fied gold by Music Canada. "I didn't actually believe it until it was pre- sented to us," he says of the gold record. "It's an amazing feeling." Pacampara, 27, who has an association with the Spectra Talent Contest, joined 10 other Spectra alumni to record the song -- but admits it wasn't easy to get into the spir- it of the season as the tune was recorded in the summer. "It was really hard to get into the mood of Christmas when you're in 20 C weather," he laughs. But with Christmas approaching, and 75 per cent of the net proceeds from the song benefiting the Humanitarian Coalition's Typhoon Haiyan 2013 emergency fund, Pacampara, whose family is from the Phil- ippines, says If You're Not Here at Christ- mas is a lot more meaningful for him now. He says for most of his life he's felt some- what removed from his ancestral homeland. However after the devastating typhoon, he started hearing stories from friends and co- workers who have relatives in the Philip- pines. "It starts to get real; it starts to get closer and closer to home," Pacampara says. If You're Not Here at Christmas is "a hope- ful song," although the subject matter is a bit sad. "There's a kind of hope to it if even though there's loss during the holidays if someone's not around," he says. The remaining 25 per cent of the song's proceeds goes to the Rainbow Association of Canadian Artists -- a registered non-prof- it organization that celebrates diversity in musical performance. Pacampara says the gold record "is the highlight of my career so far, going out there and trying to find exposure." He says "family is the focus, my main theme this year" for spending the holidays. To buy the song visit www.spectrasingers. com. Meanwhile, Paige Michael is planning a holiday season with family and friends. The 14-year old Port Perry singer/songwriter announced herself in a big way earlier this year with her song, You Don't Know, which has garnered more than 100,000 hits on You- Tube. Paige has recorded a Christmas favou- rite, Silent Night, and her songwriting part- ner, Julien Kelland of Uxbridge, has put out a version of O Holy Night. They are donating all profits from the sale of the songs to spon- sor, through Compassion.ca, Safiata, a five- year-old girl from Burkina Faso, West Africa. Paige explains that her mother and her producer showed her a list of songs she might sing and Silent Night was an easy choice. "Silent Night was the only one on the list I knew," she laughs. For the upcoming year, Paige says she plans on playing more shows next summer. But before 2013 ends, she's going to spend part of her Christmas break working with Julien on some new songs that are to be released early next year. Check out her website, paigemichaelmu- sic.com. You can purchase the songs on itunes. Jeff Morrison, a singer/songwriter and visual artist from Whitby, has created a whole online Christmas gift store to raise money and awareness for his charity of choice, the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness. And he and musical partner Tim Hawkes did their homework before choos- ing it. "They're a very worthwhile charity; they're not big at all on anyone's radar but they're doing good work," he says. "CCAA helps victims of abuse which, unfortunately, most of the time are women and children." At ccaagiftshop.weebly.com, you can pur- chase music by Morrison Hawkes, includ- ing the duo's I Heard the Bells at Christmas original Christmas album, and Morrison's art prints and Christmas cards. Morrison Hawkes also performed a cou- ple of recent live shows in Oshawa as part of the fundraiser, with Morrison noting "that (web)site will always be there," not just for Christmas. Morrison Hawkes recorded new music this year which is to be released in the spring or summer. Morrison is looking forward to hosting family in Whitby for Christmas. Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line playing Durham in 2014 OSHAWA -- February is shaping up to be a very busy month at the General Motors Centre. The Oshawa venue recently announced that country superstar Jason Aldean’s 2014 Night Train Tour will make a Feb. 6 stop there. And Aldean, who played Clar- ington’s Boots and Hearts Music Festival in the summer, won’t be alone: special guests are Florida Georgia Line and Tyler Farr. “This is Aldean’s biggest tour to date, and one of the most anticipated of the year, with 19 buses and trucks and over 100 band and crew members,” states a press release. “The all-new production includes 1,750 square feet of high-resolution video panels and will take more than 130 crew members to set up each day. Fans can expect to hear new songs off his recently released plati- num album Night Train, including 1994, The Only Way I Know, Night Train and When She Says Baby.” The special guests are no slouches either. Florida Georgia Line is one of the biggest acts in country music right now. The band’s platinum-selling debut album, Here’s to the Good Times, released a year ago, hit No. 1 in the United States. And the album just a got a makeover of sorts, with new tracks added and a DVD of music vid- eos and behind-the-scenes footage. Tyler Farr’s third single, Redneck Crazy, became his first top 10 hit in 2013. Tickets are on sale at the GMC box office, by calling 1-877-436-8811, at gen- eralmotorscentre.com or livenation.com and at the United Way Information Kiosk at the Oshawa Shopping Centre. The GMC has announced a slew of shows lately. On tap for February alone are Barenaked Ladies (Feb. 3), Jason Aldean and Florida/Georgia line (Feb. 6), Dean Brody (Feb. 7), Elton John (Feb. 12), Blue Rodeo (Feb. 21), Goo Goo Dolls (Feb. 22) and Hedley (Feb. 28). AJAX -- Ajax singer Paolo Pacampara, left, received his gold record for the song If You’re Not Here At Christmas from Ralph Hamelmann, executive director of Spectra Talent, who co-wrote the No. 1 song. Pacampara joined with other Spectra alumni to perform the song. Photo by Glenn Bell Bennett made most of opportunity Hole-in-one leads to golf scholarship Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- When Meghan Bennett was presented with the opportunity to make a favourable impression on University of North Florida golf coach Joanne Steele, she made the most of it. One shot was all it took. Mind you, that single shot was a hole-in- one, with the coach’s eyes fixated on the stroke. Bennett, of Pickering, laughs about the story now as she tells it, but the shot pro- vided a sense of relief. The shining moment came in a tour- nament in Myrtle Beach in March of last year, as she represented Team Ontario in a Ryder Cup format. Bennett had made a visit to North Florida to view the cam- pus and meet the coach, and came away impressed. Coach Steele was in Myrtle Beach to watch Bennett as she strode to the par 3, third hole, selecting a six-iron for the 140-yard shot. “I knew she was watching,” says Bennett in picking up the story. “The previous hole I was in some trouble and she saw me get out of a hazard there. I guess I recovered nicely on the next hole. “I really like the school, so I felt a little more pressure.” The hole-in-one was the second of Ben- nett’s career, and as she strode to the next hole, Steele joked that she was signed. The official signing came in April of this year. It has been a long journey for the 18 year old, who started golfing at the age of six, joining family and neighbours on a golf course while on vacation. By the age of 10, she was playing competitively. The Dunbarton High School graduate has spent the past five years training in Missis- sauga with Ann Carroll, head coach of the national development team. She watched as some of the older players trained and went off to school. “And it seemed like something I wanted to do as well and follow them,” says Ben- nett. She was very thorough in her univer- sity search, visiting five or six schools while carefully researching each one in an attempt to find the best fit. In North Florida she found a match. “Just the coach,” says Bennett of the respect she has for Steele. “She was super nice. They have a great practice facility. The campus is really pretty.” On the school’s website, coach Steele said of her new recruit: “Meghan has had the opportunity to compete at the top level in Canada and has been very successful doing so. I believe this along with her work ethic and passion for the game will help her make a smooth transition to collegiate golf. She is a very strong and accomplished player and will be a great addition to our program.” An honour roll student with a 94-per cent overall average in high school, Bennett is looking forward to enrolling in the fall of 2014, where the ability to golf year-round under sunshine and blue skies will greet her most days. “It will be a big change but I’m looking forward to improving my golf and going to a great school,” she says. She will be leaving in mid-August, and when not on the course, will be in the classroom taking business and communi- cations. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 1 9 , 2 0 1 3 24 AP Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor / bkelly@durhamregion.com / 905-579-4400 #2254 PICKERING -- Meghan Bennett signed her official letter of intent with the University of North Florida in April, committing to a golf scholarship. The Dunbarton graduate will enrol in the school in the fall of 2014. Submitted photo Durham West Jr. Lightning keep hold on second place AJAX -- A string of three games in four days started well for the Durham West Jr. Light- ning, but didn’t end on a positive note. The Lightning recorded a pair of week- end wins, beating Oakville 4-1 and Barrie 5-0, but came up short on home ice Tues- day, falling 4-1 to Brampton. In the home ice win over Oakville, Alysha Burris had a goal and three assists, while Kennedy Marchment had two goals and an assist, and Alyssa Gee equalled that total of three with a goal and two helpers to lead the way for the Lightning. In Barrie on Sunday, Stephanie Sluys recorded the shutout, her fifth of the sea- son, stopping all 26 shots. Offensively, the same trio as the day before led the way, Marchment with three goals and two assists, while Gee and Burriss had a goal and three assists each. Marchment opened the scoring in Brampton on Tuesday, but the Lightning were down 2-1 after the first period and 3-1 through two in the loss. The run of success by Marchment on the weekend leaves her in first place in the league scoring race with 19-21-40 totals, two points better than Mississauga’s Vic- toria Bach. Burriss is third with 11-22-33 numbers. The Lightning will be in Etobicoke on Saturday and Toronto on Sunday, before breaking from league play for Christmas until Jan. 11. They enter the weekend sec- ond at 15-4-2-1, two points back of first- place Mississauga. Basketball Chelayne Bailey, Lorraine Enabuele and Cheyenne Creighton invited to national assessment camp TORONTO -- Three players from the area have been selected by Canada Basketball to attend a national age-group assessment camp behind held at Humber College from Dec. 16-20. A total of 39 young female athletes from across the country have been invited to take part in the camp, which includes on- and off-court sessions. Ajax residents Chelayne Bailey (1997) and Lorraine Enabuele (1996) and Pick- ering’s Cheyenne Creighton (1996) are among the participants. This assessment camp, combined with previous and upcoming identification work, will contribute to the assessment of the overall athlete pool and determine those athletes to be chosen for each of the U17 and U18 women’s summer national team program’s tryouts by invitation. Both U17 and U18 national teams will be competing in FIBA-sanctioned champi- onship tournaments this coming summer. “We are excited to hold this camp to provide athletes with exposure to our Cana- dian style of play and give them an oppor- tunity to apply this knowledge towards the goal of becoming a world-class athlete in international basketball,” said Denise Dignard, director of women’s high perfor- mance. The junior (U18) women’s national team will compete at the FIBA Americas U18 championship for women in Colorado Springs, from Aug. 6–10. The tournament features teams repre- senting eight countries from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean, with players born in 1996 or later. The 2013 cadette women’s national team will attend the FIBA U17 world cham- pionships for women, which will be held in Slovakia from June 28 to July 6. The team qualified after finishing sec- ond at the FIBA Americas U16 champion- ship in Cancun, Mexico this past summer. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 1 9 , 2 0 1 3 25 AP Get the Skills you Need for your New Career DISCOVER IMPROVE ACHIEVE 1-888-806-1856 triosdurham.com CONTACTUS TODAY! • BUSINESS • TECHNOLOGY • HEALTHCARE • LAW • SUPPLY CHAIN 1-888-806-1856 triosdurham.com OSHAWA: 200 JOHN ST.
