The boards each met Nov. 12 to make recommendations on a joint report that outlines the benefits and risks of a merger. “We know that the status quo is not an option given the need for fun- damental restructuring of the health system in light of increasing patient demand and reduced availability of funding,” said Joan Wideman, chair- woman of the RVHS board. Dec. 31, 2013 Crown rejects manslaughter plea in death of Ajax man Ex-lover faces second trial in killing JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- The Crown has rejected an attempt by a woman charged with murdering an Ajax man to plead guilty to a lesser offence. Jury selection has now begun in the trial of Aimee Margaret McIntyre, who is charged with first-degree murder in the 2007 killing of Karl O’Reggio, her ex-boyfriend. During her arraignment Wednesday morning in Oshawa, Ms. McIntyre’s legal team entered a plea of not guilty to the murder charge, but indicated her desire to plead guilty to manslaughter. That plea was rejected by prosecutor Kent Saliwon- chyk. Ms. McIntyre, 31, of Bobcaygeon, is accused of orchestrating the death of the 33-year-old Mr. O’Reggio, who was stabbed to death in his Tresher Court apartment in July of 2007. This proceeding marks Ms. McIntyre’s second trial in Mr. O’Reggio’s death. The Ontario Court of Appeal ordered the new trial after reviewing her 2010 trial, which also took place in Oshawa. AJAX -- This picture taken in Lindsay by a Durham Regional Police surveillance unit was offered as evidence during the first-degree murder trial of Aimee McIntyre, accused of teaming with Jonathan Ebanks, in the hat and Nathan Kelly, in the killing of Karl O’Reggio of Ajax in 2007. The Ontario Court of Appeal has ordered a new trial for Ms. McIntyre. Pickering councillor at odds over Code of Conduct accusations Doug Dickerson files complaint against fellow councillor Moya Dillon mdillon@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Councillor Doug Dickerson has called on Pickering’s integrity commissioner to address remarks made by Coun. Jennifer O’Connell during a particularly heated council meeting. During a Sept. 16 meeting, a motion put forward by Coun. Bill McLean and seconded by Coun. O’Connell that would have removed Coun. Dickerson from his positions as chair of the Veridian Board and depu- ty mayor of the City sparked heated debate before it was voted down. During that debate Coun. O’Connell twice described Coun. Dickerson as having committed “fraud," referring to the councillor having earlier plead- ed guilty to two counts of contravening the Municipal Elections Act. “In my opinion she violated the code of conduct,” Coun. Dickerson said, noting he filed a complaint in a letter sent to the City’s integrity commissioner on Oct. 16. “I don’t have to take that from anyone,” he continued. “If that young lady is going to suggest she knows democracy better than I do, I don’t think so. This needs to be addressed, some councillors don’t seem to under- stand when you leave court, the court case is over.” Coun. O’Connell is standing by her statement. “I have not breached the code of conduct and I feel very confident that’s what the integrity commissioner will find,” she said. “I won’t apologize for comments made in council, I still feel very strongly he’s an embarrassment to coun- cil and an embarrassment to the city. Frankly, he should be apologizing for costing the taxpayers $300,000 in defense costs and now he wants to spend more taxpayer money on these claims. Frankly, he should be apologiz- ing.” While Coun. Dickerson initially contacted Coun. O’Connell seeking an apology, and filed the complaint when he didn’t hear back, he says it’s too late for an apology at this stage. “I would still want the investigation, but she’s made no effort to apologize. Someone’s got to hold this young lady accountable. She wants openness and honesty, she should look in the mirror.” In addition to complaints over the use of the word “fraud," Coun. Dickerson accused Coun. O’Connell of attempting to influence the vote of Coun. Kevin Ashe by implying he would be made deputy mayor if the motion was successful. “Did she use her influence to try to influence another vote?” Coun. Dickerson said. “That’s clearly wrong.” Coun. O’Connell vehemently denies the accusation. “That did not happen; those claims are completely false,” she said. “I did ask who might be interested in deputy mayor, I polled sev- eral councillors hoping I could find someone who wouldn’t be an embarrassment. I never tried to entice anyone to vote, I thought (Coun. Dickerson’s) crimes should be enticement enough.” City staff and integrity commissioner Suzanne Craig could not comment on an ongoing investigation. According to the Code of Conduct, if a preliminary review determines the complaint is not frivolous, vexatious or made in good faith, a formal investigation will be opened and should take no longer than 90 days. Should the complaint then be upheld, a report detailing the findings of the investigation will be presented to council. Update Coun. O’Connell clarifies comments at subsequent meeting Councillor Jennifer O’Connell says she wants to clarify statements made about fellow Councillor Doug Dickerson at a meeting on Sept. 16. Speaking at council’s Nov. 11 executive commit- tee meeting, Coun. O’Connell noted questions have been raised about her use of the word “fraud,” during a debate on whether to remove Coun. Dickerson from his positions as deputy mayor and chairman of the Verid- ian board. “I never intended to impugn Councillor Dick- erson by using the term fraud,” Coun. O’Connell says. “The term fraud was actually used based on commonly held dictionary definition.” She stressed there was no intent to suggest Coun- cillor Dickerson was criminally charged with fraud. “If there was any offence taken or misunderstanding...I just wanted to make that clear tonight,” she said. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • No v e m b e r 1 4 , 2 0 1 3 4 AP Don’t let neuropathy hold you back from enjoying life. If Yo u Suffer From A Single One Of These To rturous Symptoms –Numbness, Tingling, Or Sharp Nerve Pain – THEN THE FA CTS BELOW MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTA NT YOU HAVE EVER READ IN YOUR LIFE! Which Of These Neuropathy Symptoms Do Yo u Suffer From? Neuropathy affects every part of your life --walking,sitting,and even sleeping. Maybe you’ve had multiple tests, only to find out no one has any idea what you have. Maybe you’ve even been put on a drug with heavy side effects. My name is Dr.Clay Kosinko, clinic director at Health First Family Chiropractic.I’ve been helping people with neuropathy and nerve problems for years. More than 500,000 Canadians suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. This painful condition interferes with your body’s ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy? Data from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners’Job Analysis of Chiropractic lists arm and leg neuropathy as the second most common nerve problem treated by chiropractors. Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone. The Single Most Important Solution To Yo ur Neuropathy By using gentle techniques,I’m able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away. Numerous studies have proven chiropractic’s effectiveness in helping nerve conditions... “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments],with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”–British Medical Journal Patients showed an 85.5%resolution of the nerve symptoms after only 9 chiropractic treatments.-Journal of Chiropractic Medicine 2008 With chiropractic care, patients had “significant improvement in perceived comfort and function, nerve conduction and finger sensation overall.” –JMPT 1998 “Significant increase in grip strength and normalization of motor and sensory latencies were noted. Orthopedic tests were negative.Symptoms dissipated.” – JMPT 1994 What these studies mean is that with chiropractic care, you could soon be enjoying life... without those aggravating nerve problems. Read what these Chiropractic Patients are saying: “Before Chiropractic, I suffered with severe low back pain and couldn’t even move my big toe.I could not walk for 10 min.without having to stop. Now,I am getting movement in my toe and back is improving.I wish I knew about chiropractic earlier.” -Abel E., Pickering “Before Chiropractic I could not walk far before my back would hurt and I would get tingling in my legs. Now my back is moving better and I can walk without any problems.” -Linda F., Pickering “Before Chiropractic...I could not live.Constant back pain &Sciatica all the time. For the first time in years I feel good and sciatica is gone. Advertising FeatureAdvertisingFeature Pickering could see 3.9-per cent tax hike in 2014 Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Pickering residents could be looking at a property tax increase of 3.9 per cent in 2014, or about $60 more a year for the aver- age house. On Nov. 11 city council’s executive committee got a look at the 2014 base budget guideline, ahead of the formal budget process in February. A report says the proposed 3.9-per cent figure translates to a total tax bill increase of 1.12 per cent, once the Region of Durham’s project- ed 2.35 per cent increase and the school board’s estimated zero per cent increase are blended together and weighted. Cost pressures pushing an increase for 2014 include City staff wages and salaries, as well as high- er costs for fuel, utilities and debt charges. An estimated $4.8 million will be required to service the City’s debt in 2014. “What always concerns me more than just the levy increase is how much debt we’re taking on,” said Councillor Jennifer O’Connell. “If the budget comes down and it’s 3.9 per cent, but we’re depleting surplus- es and debt-financing everything...for me that’s just as bad as a 10-per cent tax increase, because all we’re doing is putting the tax increase on future generations.” Stan Karwowski, division head of finance and treasurer, said the 2014 guidelines reflect council’s focus on not using debt for small purchases such as vehicles. “Council wants us to get away from debt-financing for small proj- ects and instead have the property tax base pay for those expenditures and use debt-financing for longer term assets like an operations cen- tre or a bridge,” he said. Mr. Karwowski stressed the num- bers at this point are just guidelines and could change. “A lot of things could change, the price of fuel could go up or down, there could be new provincial gov- ernment announcements. There are still variables,” he said. Councillor Peter Rodrigues said he wants to see more public partic- ipation in the 2014 budget process and asked City staff how to better engage residents. “Year after year after year, how many people do we get? Some- where between zero and two? Peo- ple say they’re up in arms about the property taxes, I’d like to see them come participate,” he said. Staff said the corporate commu- nications department is working on a strategy. Pickering’s 2014 budget meetings are scheduled for Feb. 13 and 14. *Call for details, offers cannot be combined, after rebate, O.A.C. 1910 Dundas St. E. Veterans street-naming policies in Durham omitting women’s war efforts’, news, durhamregion. com, Nov. 6, 2013. We are not suggesting that a road should be named after her, but Helen Kerr will always be a hero to us. A longtime Pickering resident, Mrs. Kerr was a second lieutenant in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during the Second World War. She later worked at a psychiatric hospi- tal in London, Ont., and at Northwestern General Hospital in Toronto. After her retirement, Mrs. Kerr wrote a book. Tender Years chronicles her youth grow- ing up on a Saskatchewan homestead during the Depression, and her difficult years in nurse’s training in a mental hos- pital prior to the discovery of mind-alter- ing psychotropic drugs. That medical training was put to the test during the exciting time she served as a nurse in the Canadian Army at the front in France, and later in army hospitals in England. The book also details her whirlwind romance with a Scottish captain in the British Armed Forces. Now 94, Mrs. Kerr continues as an active member of Pickering Branch 606 of the Royal Canadian Legion, as well as with its Women’s Auxiliary. Mrs. Kerr is amazing, accomplished, generous, kind and oh so smart. And we are so proud to call her Mom. Sheila Reagan Sandra Cyr Pickering Doing the math on the sewage plant daily discharges To the editor: OK, let’s do the math. The Duffin Creek Water Control Plant (WPCP) discharges up to 311 kilograms/day of phosphorous. This is equivalent to 3,600,000 micro- grams/second. The WPCP currently discharges effluent at a rate of 380 million litres/day, or 4,398 litres/second. Therefore, the concentration of the phosphorous in the effluent is equiva- lent to 818.6 micrograms/litre (3,600,000 micrograms divided by 4,398 litres). The Ministry Of Environment’s allow- able standard for phosphorous is 20 micrograms/litre. Therefore, the WPCP discharges 41 times more phosphorous than allowed. Conclusion? Joe Vranic Ajax More than virtually any other place in Durham, immigrants call Pickering home and they go a long way toward making the city vibrant and diverse. New data from Statistics Canada reveals that Durham Region is home to the lowest percentage of immigrants in the GTA, at just 21 per cent. That's far lower than Toronto and the surrounding regions of York and Peel, where immigrant populations are 49 per cent, 45 per cent and 50 per cent, respec- tively. But west Durham bucks the regional trend, with Ajax's population 34 per cent immigrants and Pickering’s 31 per cent. Proximity to Toronto is a big factor in the Pickering number, but we shouldn't forget that the City and its residents welcome new- comers and try to help them settle comfort- ably into their new community. At the upper level of government, for example, Durham Region has federally funded welcome centres for immigrants in Ajax and Pickering. And the durhamimmi- gration.ca website launched in 2010 con- tinues to enjoy international traffic. The site offers international visitors tips on life in Canada and includes information on every- thing from grocery shopping to public tran- sit. But the City of Pickering deserves kudos for rolling out the welcome mat for immi- grants. Let's not forget that an immigrant's early days in Pickering can be a bit bewil- dering, if not scary. A new country, commu- nity and culture, with all its social intrica- cies, takes some getting used to. However the New Residents - Welcome page on the City's website is a tremendous help in this regard. The 'Settling Into Your Home' page offers key phone numbers new- comers will need, such as natural gas and home and cable providers. Under 'Volunteer Opportunities', new residents are encour- aged to jump right in to their new commu- nity, with many options provided. Finally, the 'City and Region Service' offers impor- tant City information and contact numbers. Also at the City, the Advisory Committee on Diversity guides and advises the commu- nity on matters involving race relations and equity, promoting equal opportunity and participation in all aspects of Pickering. The City even reaches out to people with its Diversity Survey, encouraging feed- back related to their sense of belonging in Pickering and involvement in programs. People from other parts of the world make us a stronger, more diverse place. And many get involved in the life of the city, in big ways and small, volunteering and in the process enriching Pickering. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • No v e m b e r 1 4 , 2 0 1 3 7 PPickering students can keep fit on a budget over the holidays PICKERING -- The City of Pickering is encouraging students to keep fit while they’re home for the holidays. Few details of the incident were immedi- ately available but Durham police confirmed a male was hit by a Durham Region Transit Bus near Pine Ridge Secondary School just before 3 p.m. The student’s age and the extent of his injuries weren’t known but reports from the site said the victim was conscious, said Ser- geant Nancy van Rooy. “It doesn’t sound life- threatening,” she said. Police investigators have been dis- patched to the scene, which was also attend- ed by paramedics and firefighters. On Nov. 11 council’s executive commit- tee held a public meeting on the proposed changes. No members of the public spoke. The City collects development charges from new residential and non-residential construction to help pay for the growth-relat- ed costs of fire services, parks, libraries, recre- ation, transportation, operations and storm water management. The residential con- struction fees, collected from developers, are factored in to the prices of new homes. Pickering’s current development charges bylaw expires on July 31, 2014. The proposed changes would see Picker- ing’s residential development charges go up, however City staff stressed they would still be among the lowest the GTA. “The City’s residential and non-residen- tial (development charge) rates are still very competitive,” said Stan Karwowski, division head of finance and treasurer. Under the proposed bylaw, there would be a jump of $2,433 for a residential detached or semi-detached unit, from $10,195 to $12,628. Other residential categories would go up too, while the non-residential rate would decrease from $4.07 per square foot to $3.69, mostly due to a reduction in the city-wide storm water management charge. The bylaw includes a transitional policy that allows any complete building permit applications received prior to Jan. 1, 2014 and issued by April 1, 2014 to be subject to the old rate. Councillor David Pickles said he often hears from people who live in GTA munici- palities with higher development charges, who report having more services. “On the one hand I see the rate being low as competitive,” he said. “On the other hand... not collecting enough development charg- es to have more ball parks and ice rinks isn’t good,” he said. Mr. Karwowski said the Seaton develop- ment will bring significant new services to Pickering, including recreation facilities, park and libraries. Members of the public can submit com- ments to the City until Nov. 22. Council will vote on the bylaw at its Dec. 9 meeting. If approved, the new bylaw will take effect Jan. 1, 2014. The first frosts do quite a number on the garden, hastening the transformation from the lush colours of summer to the soft hues of winter. Our zinnia patch suffered the most last week, morphing overnight from a shoulder- high green wall studded with blossoms to a monotone hedge of autumn brown. Instead of ruby-throated hummingbirds hovering about, drinking nectar, we have goldfinches flitting in to forage for seeds. With their own bright yellow plumage dulled to a winter grey-green, they dis- appear among the dried foliage as they check out the flower heads, then take off again with their bounding flight. Chickadees often pause to glean among the dead zinnias as well, on their way back and forth across the yard from the feeders. I watched one of our local downy woodpeckers climbing a stalk, and juncos and sparrows scratching the earth below. Though my husband tilled a few sec- tions of the garden to head off next year’s chickweed crop, we leave standing everything that might provide food, shel- ter or perching places for birds through- out winter, asparagus ferns and butterfly bushes included. The lilypads in our barrel shriveled up well before the water froze. I was alarmed to see a sheet of ice across the surface one morning, because our three gold- fish, which eat up the mosquito larvae all summer, were still out there. But the ice had melted by midmorning, mourn- ing doves were coming to drink, and the hardy goldfish were fine. And by the next heavy frost they’ll be safe in our neigh- bour’s deep pond, the waterlily plants buried below frost line in our garden. Of course, there’s still a lot growing out there, and lots of harvesting and feast- ing to be done. Not just from the bumper crop of beets we’re not quite sure what to do with. We’re still eating broccoli from the row Dennis planted last spring, and the new patch, planted in August as an experi- ment, has heads two inches across. We’re hoping to eke out a little more growth from the slanting November sun. But kale flourishes in November and survives almost anything the weath- erman throws at it. Swiss chard is a bit more sensitive, but so far ours is doing great, as is the lettuce, parsley, arugula and cilantro. And one of my favourites of all, calendula, the first plant in our yard to flower in spring and the last to suc- cumb to frost in fall. The bright orange and yellow petals of this edible, self- seeding annual not only provide a blaze of colour all summer in our flower beds, they add a splash of gold to many a green salad throughout the growing season, well on into November. In fact, in cold temperatures, frostbite can oc- cur in less than an hour. Pets can develop frostbite on the tips of their ears, tails, face, foot pads, and even genetalia. Puppies, senior pets & smaller pets with less fur are most at risk. In severe cases, frost bite may result in loss of limbs, ears, or even death. For more information please visit: A painful goodbye Last Wednesday I experienced something terrible that only pet owners and animal lovers can relate to. My boyfriend Phil adopted a tiny black cat he named Carmen in May. She was about a year old and captured his heart when each time he would walk past her at a local shel- ter, she would paw at the glass incessant- ly. Not necessarily in the market for a cat, he couldn’t resist that sweet face, and her obvious desire for a new lease on life. Despite her clear itch to get out of the shelter, she wasn’t your average house cat at first. She had been rescued from a ware- house with other felines, and was more or less feral when she came to the shelter. For the first week or two, she seemed to be nothing but a shadow. If we were lucky, we’d spot her with a flashlight, under the couch or tucked in the corner of a closet. Thankfully she was eating and using her litter box but we were afraid she’d be timid forever. But soon she let her guard down and appeared to fall in love with the human touch the instant she felt it. The first time I held my hand out and she came over and rubbed her head against it, she melted my heart. Once she came around, she wanted attention all the time. When Phil took in a second cat, King, she’d fight for the focus to be on her. Even in the end, the minute either one of us would pet King, Carmen would hop up next to us and shove the poor guy out of the way. Six months later, Carmen had become a staple in not only Phil’s life, but mine too. Since my family cat lived to 18, I fig- ured Carmen would be around for at least another 15 years. But last week we noticed she had very shallow breathing. This concerned us so we made a vet appointment, but it didn’t alarm us. She had a respiratory infection when Phil adopted her, and she fought it off with medication. I thought meds would fight this too. After all, she was only a year and a half. But when Phil took her to the vet, the news wasn’t good. The vet immediately took an X-ray and informed him she had so much fluid inside of her lungs that breath- ing was extremely difficult. It turns out she had a very rare and deadly disease, feline infectious peritonitis. Since the disease would have most likely taken her by the end of the night, she had to be euthanized. Phil called me and I made it just in time for a tearful goodbye. I don’t know if I’ll ever get the image of the tiny oxygen mask being held up to her little face, her eyes looking up at us as if say- ing, “Please help me, I’m not ready to go yet.” We weren’t ready to say goodbye either. It’s something I don’t ever want to go through again, but as an animal lover and pet owner, I know it’s inevitable. I’ve heard people say they will never adopt again because they can’t bear the pain of saying goodbye. I can now under- stand this sentiment. I’ve lost pets before, but I’ve never seen them take their last breath. Witnessing Carmen’s final moment was honestly one of the most heartwrench- ing experiences I have ever gone through. Phil says he will adopt again, and he doesn’t regret taking Carmen home, even with the heartache that followed. He feels Carmen’s six months with him must have been the happiest six months of her short life, a vast difference from what they would have been if he had left her on the other side of the glass, constantly pawing to get out. Kristen Calis Reporter The ‘Rainbow Bridge’ DURHAM -- It was with great sadness that this young cat, Carmen, had to be humanely euthanized on Nov. 6 due to an incurable disease, Feline Infectious Peritonitis. But the strain of his daily commute to Toronto is starting to take a toll. “Sometimes I feel like I would rather leave at 6 a.m. even if don’t have to be there until 9 a.m., rather than sit in traffic going nowhere,” says Mr. Penrose, 34. He works near Jane and Finch in Toron- to, and either takes GO Transit or drives himself. Either way, the trip can take as long as an hour and 15 minutes in rush hour. It’s why the couple is thinking about moving into Toronto, even though it would be a strain to afford a house there. “If the commute wasn’t so hard, we wouldn’t be thinking about going any- where,” he says. “But can we really do this for 20 years? The answer is no. If the transportation doesn’t improve or if it gets worse, this is not sustainable.” Mr. Penrose is a local champion for the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance’s 32 Reasons to Invest campaign, which launched on Nov. 1. It highlights the need for a better region- al transportation network in the Great- er Toronto and Hamilton Area, listing 32 reasons ranging from reduced carbon emissions to improved quality of life. The group is urging local residents and politicians to go online and sign the “Your32 Pledge to Get a Move On,” which calls for transportation funding that is “dedicated, efficient, transparent, accountable, regional, fair and sustain- able.” CivicAction vice-president Linda Weichel describes area road conditions as reaching “crisis proportions of gridlock,” noting it takes GTHA residents an average of 82 minutes a day to get from home to work -- one of the worst commute times in North America. “People are just getting used to how bad it is, it’s about realizing it doesn’t have to be this bad,” she says. “It’s going to get worse if we don’t do something about it.” By 2031 there will be an estimated three million more people living in the GTHA along with an additional 1.5 million cars on the road. Metrolinx has an approved 25-year plan to improve transportation across the GTHA at a cost of $50 billion for the capi- tal projects. CivicAction is concerned that only $16 billion has been committed so far, and says governments need to come up with more sustainable ways to raise funds. Ms. Weichel said examples could include roads tolls or a small sales tax increase. Have you been struggling with a health problem for a long time or are you just feeling unwell and not functioning at your optimal level, yet your medical doctor has told you that everything is normal with your blood work? If so, it’s time to schedule an appointment at Miranda Naturopathic Clinic. Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, Sandra Miranda ND, is a primary health care practitioner who is helping people of all ages achieve better health naturally. “Everyone’s body has the amazing ability to heal itself; we just need to support it and restore its natural balance,” says the doctor. People live in a society surrounded by toxins which are stored in their bodies. These poisonous compounds become the seeds for dis- ease and illness. They can come from the air, wa- ter, food, medication and from chronic lingering infections. The cumulative effect of these toxins may spring full force into a debilitating disease. The clinic offers a variety of testing to help patients understand their current health status, such as nutritional de- ficiencies, hormonal or neurotrans- mitter imbalances, digestive status, heavy metal load, etc. The objective is to assess the patient’s root cause of the problem and to offer an individ- ualized treatment plan accordingly. Dr. Miranda spends a considerable amount of time with her patients. Her treatments are a combination of nutritional and lifestyle medicine, homeopa- thy, botanicals and acupuncture. Another effective and pop- ular treatment that Dr Miranda offers at the clinic is intravenous (IV) vitamin therapy. These treat- ments allow the doctor to deliver nutrients directly into the bloodstream bypassing patient’s digestive tract. This is especially beneficial if vitamins and minerals from the food or oral supplementation aren’t properly absorbed and therefore the body’s natural repair processes are restricted. Other services offered at the clinic are live blood cell analysis, co- lon hydrotherapy treatments, ionic detox foot baths, and reflexology. Miranda Naturopathic Clinic can help people of all ages, from prenatal to geriatric, with chron- ic and acute conditions of any kind. They have answers for you. Dr. Miranda offers free 10 min- ute “Meet and Greet” sessions to help you discover how Naturopathic Medi- cine can help your health problems. Miranda Naturopathic Clinic is located at 467 Westney Road South, Unit 10 in Ajax. The clinic is open Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please call (905) 239-3900 or visit www.mynaturalclinic.com. Covered ByMost HealthCare Ins.Plans “The bottom line is that the two hospital corporations are running out of capacity to restructure services to improve efficiency,” reads an excerpt. “The next steps will have to include service reductions or elimina- tions. The integration leadership committee believes this can be avoided, minimized or deferred through merger. RVHS and TSH will be stronger and more resilient together.” Rouge Valley Health System president and CEO Rik Ganderton reiterated there are no plans to move health care services from the Ajax-Pickering site to Scarborough. “There will be no services moved out of the Ajax-Pickering campus. The hope, frankly, is that we find a way to be able to grow services at the Ajax-Pickering campus,” he said. Mr. Ganderton noted the Ajax-Pickering site is not currently meeting the needs of the local population. For example, it’s serving about one third of the demand for surgical services and about half the demand for medical and obstetrical services. The fact that doctors at the hospital are on board with the merger speaks volumes, Mr. Ganderton added. “If we did not have the support of the physi- cians this would be a non-starter, and clearly we’ve got very strong support,” he said. Walter Donaldson, chairman of Friends of the Ajax Pickering Hospital, said the group is hoping for more time to review the informa- tion, before final decisions are made. “We want more time to go over the pros and cons, it seems rushed,” he said, referring to the time between the report’s Nov. 8 release and a planned vote by the Central East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) board on Nov. 27. “The report is 43 pages and 11 appen- dices, it’s pretty big.” The two hospital boards approved motions to explore a possible merger in June. The process saw the creation of 15 working groups made up of clinical, administrative and medical staff from both hospitals, as well as stakeholder consultations that included direct input from 400 stakeholders and par- ticipation from 16,000 people in telephone town halls. If a merger is approved by the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, the amalgam- ated hospital corporation would be the sev- enth largest in the province and would have the largest surgical program in Ontario. The recommendations from the two boards will be sent to the Central East LHIN board of directors for consideration at its Nov 27 meet- ing. A recommendation from the LHIN will then go to the minister of health and long- term care for a final decision. To read the report visit www.leadingforpa- tients.ca. Merger facts Four commitments jointly made by both hospital corporations • All four hospital campuses will stay open • All four emergency departments will stay open • Patient care services currently provided at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering campus will continue to be delivered there regardless of the outcome of the process • All four hospitals will continue to provide high-quality and safe care during any health care system transformation Ajax-Pickering hospital board Oks merger with Scarborough; LHIN to vote Nov. 27 AJAX-PICKERING from page 1 PICKERING -- A rally was held Saturday afternoon hosted by the Durham Health Coalition to protest the merger of the Rouge Valley Health System and The Scarborough Hospital. DRIVEN (Durham Region’s Intimate-Rela- tionship Violence Empowerment Network) runs a walk-in clinic every Monday where victims of domestic violence can access a wide range of services at one location. “It takes a lot of strength and courage for women to come. I think that’s the most important thing,” said Roz Zurkowsky, fam- ily counsellor. “They need everything. They need housing. They need someone to listen to them and validate them because nobody has listened before ... This is a safe place for them. We can do it all here.” The program had been without any fund- ing for over a year which meant it had no co- ordinator. It’s been running since 2009. The first years it was supported by short-term grants. When that funding ran out, Bethesda House wom- en’s shelter subsidized the co-ordinator posi- tion for a number of months. When there was still no funding, the program was cut right back to basics, with no outreach or promo- tion. “We are looking desperately for sustainable annual funding so we don’t have to go grant to grant. We’re told there isn’t any funding anywhere for new programs,” said Jaki MacK- innon, executive director of Bethesda House. “During the year we didn’t have the co-ordi- nator, women didn’t know about us. Some women did know by word of mouth, but we weren’t getting new women.” The Ontario Trillium Foundation has given Bethesda House a three-year grant on behalf of DRIVEN. The new grant means they have been able to hire a co-ordinator for three years and provide better service to victims and promote the service. The co-ordinator can reach out to the com- munity and make information available at doctors’ offices and other community agen- cies. “The reality is there are women who want and need our services and there just isn’t the awareness. Right now I’m out getting our name out there so we can help the women of Durham,” said Emma Harvey, DRIVEN’s new co-ordinator. There are 13 agencies partnering to make DRIVEN possible, some on-site and some off-site. The Durham Children’s Aid Society donates the space in its Oshawa building. The other four days of the week the space is used for a children’s clinic. “We’d like to expand it (DRIVEN) ... To offer services five days a week, that’s our dream,” said Brian Prousky, director of services for the Durham Children’s Aid Society. The women who arrive need help arrang- ing housing, legal aid, a safety plan and often referrals for counselling. They often don’t know their legal rights and have been told things that are not correct, according to front- line workers. “Often the women are short of time or don’t have the transportation, or often their time is being monitored. So it’s good if they can get to one place and get the services they need,” said Dianne Kennaley, from Catholic Family Services of Durham. Victim Services of Durham Region support 5,000 domestic violence victims every year. Now that DRIVEN has a new co-ordinator, the agency will be referring more clients to the program. “We see the need ... We partner with Dur- ham Regional Police Service, which respond to over a dozen domestic violence calls a day and we deal with those clients to make sure they’re supported,” said Jade Harper, from Victim Services of Durham. For more information, visit www.durham- driven.com. Women can walk in to the pro- gram on Mondays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1320 Airport Blvd. in Oshawa. Or make an appointment by calling 905-432-7233. The services are free and child care is provided. Come to your local Allstate agency in Pickering to get your picture taken with Santa Claus for FREE. "We're offering something a little different from what the other community theatres are offering, more up-to-date (plays)," says ACT board member Ian Speiran. The season begins next week with Ali- son Lawrence's The Catering Queen, run- ning Nov. 21 to 30. Not even a decade old, the play's starting point sees the head of a law firm holding a Christmas-time office party in his Forest Hill mansion in Toron- to. The catering queen is Melanie, played by Ajax's Sarah-Liis Jones, hired to cater the party. However Speiran says things heat up when Melanie's ex-boyfriend shows up at the party with "eye candy" on his arm. He didn't want to reveal too much, but there's a death involved and in the second act Mel- anie has been hired to cater the funeral. "The first play is more like an urban, sophisticated comedy," Speiran says. In addition to Jones, the cast features Barb Frigault of Whitby, Mireille Arnberg and Mark Salonius of Courtice, Garret Lee of Oshawa and Ajax's Derek Barber. Bus Stop is "our classic show of the sea- son," Speiran says. Described on the ACT website as "a dramedy by William Inge," Speiran says the main protagonist is a young cowboy who's come to find a wife and "literally kidnaps a lounge singer" to take back home. But a bus out of town can’t make the trip so it pulls over at a diner, where the tired travellers have to spend the night. It runs Feb. 27 to March 8. Speiran likens The Psychic, "a comic mys- tery by Sam Bobrick," to one of the funni- er episodes of the old Twilight Zone series. A writer down on his luck and living in a squalid New York basement apartment decides to offer psychic readings. A woman comes in for a reading and the writer tells her that her husband is trying to kill her. "It ends up coming true," Speiran says, adding that the writer learns he has a talent for this sort of thing. He soon finds himself entangled in sever- al strange but funny murders. Speiran notes the play won the 2011 Edgar Award as Best Play by the Mystery Writers of America. See it from May 29 to June 7. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland Oshawa violinist featured at concert OSHAWA -- The Durham Youth Orches- tra's Nov. 23 Fall Concert features Oshawa violinist Meagan Turner. The concert, which kicks off the DYO's 20th anniversary season, is at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Pentecostal Church, 900 King St. E., Oshawa. "Meagan Turner will be perform- ing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor with the orchestra," says music director John Beaton. "This piece is one of the great masterpieces for solo violin and is particularly well-loved for its pas- sion, tenderness and exuberance. Mea- gan began learning the violin at the age of six with local teacher John Beaton. She is currently a third-year performance major at the University of Toronto, where she studies with Erika Raum as a full scholar- ship student." He notes that when she was younger Turner won two silver medals from the Royal Conservatory of Music for obtain- ing the highest marks in the province on her Grade 5 and 10 violin exams. Turner has performed in the Durham Youth Orchestra, the Toronto Sympho- ny Youth Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the Orchestre de la Francophonie and the Ontario Philhar- monic. Beaton says Turner's ambition is to become a professional chamber musi- cian and a member of a major orchestra. Also being performed at the concert are Movements from Water Music by G.F. Handel, Holberg Suite by E. Grieg and Barber of Seville Overture by G. Rossini. For more concert information, phone 905-728-6173 or visit www.dyomusic. com. The Boots and Hearts music festival has announced Luke Bryan as its second headliner for next summer’s festival in Clarington. At the end of this year’s fes- tival, Blake Shelton appeared on a video screen to say he will be performing here in 2014 as well. “One of the hottest acts in any genre of music, Bryan was the most requested artist by Boots and Hearts fans, and his recent album, Crash My Party, debuted at No. 1, selling more than half a million copies in its first week, making it the larg- est sales for a country male artist since 2004,” stated a press release. Boots and Hearts 2014 is at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park July 31 to Aug. 3. For more information and tickets, visit bootsandhearts.com. Also announced is a Feb. 28 concert at Oshawa’s General Motors Centre, with Hedley taking the stage. The Wild Live Tour also features special guests Danny Fernandes, JRDN and Alys- sa Reid. The Ajax resident won the men’s singles title at the Ontario university champion- ships, knocking off top-seeded Vincent Chan of Waterloo in the final 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. It was a reversal from last year when Manji reached the final, but lost in three sets to a player from York. “It was definitely a great year and a lot of fun too,” said Manji in looking back at the season. “This year I felt like I was playing much better than last year. My shots were definitely more solid than last year. “Last year I struggled in the final. I wasn’t playing as well as I knew I could and the guy I was playing was on. He was playing really well. It just made it tough for me to win that match. “This year I was on my game and playing as well as I knew I could play.” This year’s final was held on a hard court surface, which is better suited to his style than the clay courts last year’s champion- ships were contested on, he added. Manji’s silver medal last year in men’s singles earned him rookie of the year hon- ours. This time around, after winning the men’s crown, he cashed in the daily dou- ble, named an OUA all-star and player of the year. It was quite an honour for the 19 year old. “I was definitely humbled by it,” said Manji, who is in his third year of comput- er science and economics studies, but only second year on the varsity tennis team. “I’m really happy I got chosen to win the award because I know that there was a lot of other people who deserve it and who were contenders.” His coach, Nabil Tadros, who has been with the U of T tennis program since 1984, had nothing but praise for the top player at the school and in the province. “He’s not like a lot of the players today that whine,” said Tadros, reciting a story of an opponent of Manji’s who spent much of a match complaining about a call. “Zain is the complete opposite. I’ve never heard him complain about anything. He gets out there, does what he has to do. If he loses it’s with no excuses. “He’s the kind of kid you get every 10 years or so.” It was a great year of tennis for the Manji brothers. Zain’s younger brother, Raheel, played singles at the Canada Summer Games in August in Quebec, helping Team Ontario to the gold medal. Ontario topped British Columbia in the gold medal final. The Panthers rallied from a 3-1 deficit after two periods to knot the game 4-4 heading into overtime. After a scoreless extra period, Nicholas Lepone and Brodie Tutton scored in the shootout, while Steven Dombrosky stopped both shooters he faced, ending the shootout after just two rounds.
