Although officials estimated work would take about eight months, the westbound lanes of Finch Avenue will be closed for 14 months beginning Oct. 1 to allow for completion of that section of a southeast collector trunk sewer. SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND Work on Finch Avenue to last longer than expected Westbound lanes will be closed for more than a year for sewer line work in Pickering MOYA DILLON mdillon@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Residents in the Finch Avenue and Valley Farm Road area will be dealing with road work for longer than originally anticipated. Connecting the southeast collector trunk sewer line to the existing sewer requires the construction of a connec- tion chamber at the northeast corner of the intersection of Finch and Valley Farm, partially under the road. The work is scheduled to close the westbound lanes of Finch, from Valley Farm to Brock Road, from Oct. 1 until December 2014. While officials initially estimated the work would take about eight months, it has since been expanded to 14 months. “We communicated to residents previously that this period of construction would be a little shorter, but the devil is in the details,” said Tomislav Hrkac, senior project manager with the Region of York. THE Pickering murder victims left DNA in suspect’s home: witness JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- Blood from the victims of a double mur- der in Pickering was detected in the home of one of the men accused of the killings, court has heard. And DNA linked to the second accused in the case was found on duct tape used to bind the victims, a forensics expert has testified. The DNA evidence was put before the jury Monday as the trial of Vijay Singh and John Le entered its third week at the Oshawa courthouse. They have pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree murder in the deaths of Harjinder Singh Sandhu and Puneet Singh Chhina. The bodies of Mr. Sandhu, 29, of Brampton, and the 26-year-old Mr Chhina, of Nepean, were discovered in the trunk of a car abandoned on Rosebank Road in Pickering on May 5, 2009. Both men were bound with tape and shot in the head. The Crown alleges Mr. Sandhu was targeted because he was suspected of stealing a shipment of cocaine belonging to Mr. Singh. Prosecutors contend Mr. Sandhu was lured to Mr. Singh’s Agincourt Drive home with an offer of cheap heroin; Mr. Chhina accompanied him that day, court has heard. Kelly Bowie, a biologist with the Centre of Forensic Scienc- es, testified Monday that an examination of Mr. Singh’s home revealed traces of blood linked to both victims. A speck of blood matching Mr. Sandhu’s DNA profile was located on a wall in the home while grout extracted from around floor tiles in the kitchen bore traces of Mr. Chhina’s DNA, she testified. “There were chemical indications of blood detected in other areas as well,” Ms. Bowie said. Jurors also heard Monday that pieces of latex glove discovered on duct tape used to bind Mr. Chhina were found to have traces of DNA matching Mr. Le’s. Under cross examination Ms. Bowie said there’s no way to prove Mr. Le was wearing the glove on May 4, 2009, the day the two victims went missing. “I can’t determine when or by what means (the DNA) was deposited,” she said in response to questions by defence lawyer Ravin Pillay. And testing also can’t conclusively determine when or how the blood found at Mr. Singh’s residence came to be there, court heard. “It can last for years. Decades, even,” Ms. Bowie said. “DNA can be very stable.” Court heard that while a number of profiles were created from DNA detected during the investigation, Mr. Singh was excluded as a source. The trial continues. On Sept. 19 the group expressed concerns about the recent public consultation process, which ended on July 31, in a letter to Trans- portation Minister Lisa Raitt, asking that any input received be made available to the pub- lic. “We have two fundamental concerns with this statement,” said the group in the letter, signed by Land over Landings chairwoman Mary Delaney. “First, that Transport Canada will deem the submission exercise to have fulfilled the gov- ernment’s commitment to seek public input. Second, that the department, if it releases information at all, will summarize and aggre- gate the contents of those submissions to the point where arguments will be simpli- fied and neutralized, and perhaps distorted to serve the department’s purpose. It’s com- mon knowledge that Transport Canada has been pushing for this airport for more than four decades and is therefore not an objective party in the matter.” Tina Morris, spokeswoman for Transport Canada, stressed that there will be more pub- lic consultation to come. “Because we are now proposing a smaller airport we have to change everything. The zoning amendments will look at things such as height of buildings in the area and bird hazard zones, but we’ll have to change those areas based on the new airport configuration.” Existing airport zoning regulations, based on the earlier, seven-runway airport configu- ration, will be replaced. Although Transport Canada currently has no details on what the newly proposed air- port will look like, Ms. Morris said the config- uration will be available to the public before the next round of public consultations, which is expected to begin in 2014 and include at least four public information sessions. “We need to know the steps going forward and we would like to see any data they’ve col- lected so far or prepared for their business case on this airport,” said Ms. Delaney, noting no environmental assessment has yet been undertaken on the proposed project. Ms. Delaney said the group hopes to meet with MP Chris Alexander, and will ask him to set up meetings with Ms. Raitt and others in order to discuss the details of the project. The public can learn more about the air- port proposal, and Land Over Landing’s fight to preserve the lands, at an upcoming public information meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Claremont Community Centre. And given a smaller airport is now planned by the federal government, some of the lands should be preserved as farmland. The federal government’s June announce- ment, that planning for an airport would go ahead, also included the transfer of some 5,000 acres, more than 25 per cent of the land holdings, to the Rouge Park. But with a smaller airport in the cards and not as much land required for it, it seemed an oversight, ignoring the significance of the land, when Finance Minister Jim Fla- herty announced that nothing was planned on the agricultural side. Why not, is our question. Farmers will tell you this isn’t just good farmland, this is Class 1 farmland, the best of the best. There’s very little of it in Canada, just 0.5 per cent of all the land in this vast country, and more than half it is in southern Ontario. But hundreds of thousands of acres of this land in the GTA have disappeared since the expropriation of the airport lands in 1972. Yes, the airport and related industrial uses, especially in the aeronautics indus- try, should be a big economic boost to Pickering and all of Durham. And farmers will tell you a viable farm in the 21st century needs to be at least 1,000 acres in size, so preserving much of the land not needed for the airport as farmland likely is not viable. But the fact that the airport lands are Class 1 farmland seems to have been for- gotten. More balance is required in the fed- eral government’s plans. If only for teaching, or for a massive com- munity garden, some of this land should be used for farming. Let’s not forget Durham College’s new Centre for Food and the will- ingness of local farmers to be involved. A plot of land on the airport lands would be an ideal place for students to learn from farmers and work together. With the increasing importance of and demand for locally grown food, saving some of the excellent farmland so close to urban Durham seems a no-brainer. The vague federal plans for the non-air- port portion of the lands, not including the parcel added to the Rouge Park, need to be firmed up to include at least some farm- land. Hospitals must consider population increases To the editor: Re: ‘Merging Ajax, Pickering and Scarbor- ough hospitals the way to go’, editorial opin- ion, durhamregion.com, Sept. 26, 2013. Because of the way hospital change issues were handled in the past, I can’t help but wonder if trust levels are low in Ajax and Pickering regarding the proposed amal- gamation of RVHS with the Scarborough Hospital System. With a population of nearly a quarter of a million people, Ajax and Pickering are half the size of Scarborough with one smaller local emergency services hospital com- pared to Scarborough’s three large gener- al hospitals. Clearly there is an imbalance here. Personally, I’d feel more assured that Ajax and Pickering are getting hospital ser- vices that are equitable to Scarborough’s if I could see a full chart showing the popu- lation, and what hospitals and services are available per capita locally (i.e. in town within Ajax, Pickering and Scarborough). My preference would be that this chart be done by a source independent of the hos- pital systems involved, such as a journalis- tic source, to assure objectivity. We in Ajax-Pickering need reassurance that this merger is not a proposition that would give Scarborough three full service hospitals while giving Ajax-Pickering a mere satellite hospital dependent on three Goliaths for hospital services that are not conveniently close to home. Ajax and Pickering are not the small towns they once were and we need more than a small town satellite hospital. My hope is that this proposed change will rec- ognize that. That would be an excellent step towards rebuilding trust. Nancy Connolly-Hendriks Ajax Multiple choice test not a measure of learning To the editor: Re: EQAO results. As a new parent in Ontario, it was quite disheartening to see that, yet again, stan- dardized test scores of eight and 11 year olds captured headlines in the local paper. How much of the school day was going into preparing for multiple choice testing? What kind of a literacy test is it when oral comprehension in French and the qual- ity time given to that (one of our two offi- cial languages) can be seen as a short-term impediment to literacy test results? Do we as Ontarians truly believe that doing better on multiple choice questions from one year to the next, when we have rearranged our lesson to ‘teach to a test’ is a measure of literacy at all? Members of the OPP’s Highway Safe- ty Division’s Whitby detachment were called to an accident in the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401 just east of Brock Road in Pickering recently. A tractor trailer and a BMW were involved in a collision. A police cruiser was stopped in the lane behind the collision when it was rear- ended by an eastbound Subaru. The men driving the BMW and the Suba- ru were both taken to hospital with minor injuries, as was the officer. The driver of the tractor trailer wasn’t hurt. Nigel Thomas, 35 of Oshawa, was driv- ing the BMW and he’s been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, having over 80 mgs, and dangerous opera- tion of a motor vehicle. He was released on a promise to appear and will be in court on Oct. 10. J a m e s McDonnell, 48 of Port Perry, was driving the Subaru and he’s been charged with impaired oper- ation of a motor vehicle, refusing to provide a breath sam- ple and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He was released on promise to appear and will appear in court on Oct. 17. Both collisions are still under investiga- tion and anyone with information is asked to call constables Lamarche and Cox at the Whitby detachment at 905-668-3388. 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa •905-723-4561 Hours: Mon. -We d. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 *Credit equal to the value of the HST. He is a sweet boy. For more information, please contact the Humane Society of Durham Region at 905-665-7430. sabrina byrnes / metroland Nectar has plenty of birds humming “We left our nectar feeder up longer this year than in the past, and we’ve had a hummingbird coming since last Sat- urday,” wrote Laurie Davis of Courtice. “What should we do -- leave it up till we don’t see him anymore?” I was so glad she e-mailed me, part- ly because it gave me a chance to share with her all the excitement that was hap- pening at my own feeder. I’d been dying to tell someone. A week ago Saturday, a long day of rain, my husband and I started noticing a hummer hanging about our porch, in out of the elements. It found a perch on our clematis trellis right beside the feeder, a nice dry spot from which it could put the run on any other hummer that came zip- ping in for a drink. Which they did. It seemed every time we passed the window, two or three of the little guys were coming or going, hovering or dart- ing, sipping or fleeing. When the bossi- est one left its shelter and gave chase out in the rain, another hummingbird would sneak around the clematis and came in for a good long drink, perching on one of the red plastic flowers until Bossy returned. As dusk approached an interesting thing happened. More hummers started gathering on the porch around the feed- er, and refused to be chased away. It was as if the normal personal space they maintained shrank more and more as twilight neared. Or else they were so desperate to get enough nectar to make it through the night that they totally ignored the pecking order and just went for it. As darkness fell there was a whole flock of little forms hovering around the feed- er. We counted eight at once, but there may have been more. Dennis and I were amazed, watching them from the win- dow. When it was totally dark, we took the feeder in and filled it up for morning. We decided to hang out an extra one as well, to cut down on the lineup for breakfast. And at first light, there they were again, like a swarm of honeybees around a hive, two or three drinking at a time. I figured they’d take advantage of the fair weather following the rain to head off to Mexico. But no, morning and night all last week we often saw three or four at once. Fat- tening up for their big flight? Even as I write, we’re still having at least two regu- lar visitors, though the jewelweed in our yard is done blooming and the zinnias well past their prime. So Laurie, we were right to keep our feeders filled up on past that cold spell in early September. We’re catering to the stragglers, which know a lot more than we do about when it’s time to migrate south. Nature queries: mcarney@interlinks. net or 905-725-2116. Many neglected animals wouldn’t be get- ting the help they need, and more homeless pets would be euthanized each day. Volunteering is something that not only gives us a sense of accomplishment, knowing we’re doing something for the greater good, but it helps organizations in need and the animals that benefit from them. If you spend some time at an animal shelter and comfort one of the pets that have found their way there, you may be giving them some love they had never felt before. It's a great way to give teens something pro- ductive to do, teach them good values, or sim- ply help them add up those volunteer hours they need to graduate high school. Fast forward 50 years and it can help retir- ees stay busy while giving back to the com- munity. Or for those still working, volunteer- ing with animals can help them unwind and de-stress. Not-for-profit or charitable organizations are always strapped for cash -- it costs money not only to feed and house the animals, but to pay for vet care. So they love when people with a good work ethic and a positive attitude are willing to donate their time, which helps save on staffing costs. The Humane Society of Durham Region has announced that it's accepting new vol- unteers. Anyone interested who’s at least 16 years old should complete a volunteer appli- cation form either at humanedurham.com or at the shelter, 1505 Wentworth St. in Whitby. Applications can be faxed to 905-665-9644 or dropped off at the shelter. But the humane society isn't the only place that can use volunteers. Plenty of shelters need people to spend some time with the ani- mals or complete tasks. Just search the Inter- net and find a charity or not-for-profit you feel strongly about and apply or ask about volun- teer opportunities. Duties may include cleaning out litter boxes, walking dogs or helping out with a fundrais- ing event. Whatever it is that you do, it’s all needed in order to help the charity continue on. When I talk to people who have made vol- unteering with animals a part of their life, they say it’s just as beneficial for them as it is for the animals they help care for. They make new friends -- furry and human alike -- learn new skills and young people are able to add their experience to their resume. Some even turn their volunteering experi- ence into careers, and they would have never chosen to go the animal-welfare route if they hadn’t volunteered first. UPCOMING The Humane Society of Durham Region is holding Applefest on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the humane society shelter at 1505 Wentworth St. in Whitby. The event will include a tea room with plenty of apple themed desserts, vendors, psychic and tea leaf readings, and a yard sale and bake sale. There is no cost to attend the event and it will be held rain or shine. All proceeds will go to the shel- ter's Dollars for Dentistry Program. For more information, visit humanedurham.com or call 905-665-7430. WHITBY -- Volunteer Dianne Fil, with Kiwi, a cat up for adoption at the Humane Society of Durham Region. There are benefits to having new windows and doors. They improve the overall look of your house and increase its value. New windows and doors are also much more energy efficient, which means you can keep your heating and air conditioning inside, reducing your monthly bills. It may be tempting to pick up some windows and install them yourself, but even if you buy the best windows on the market, if they are not installed and sealed properly, they essentially become worthless. “If a window or door is not installed properly, you can get drafts coming into the house,” explains Wayne Hutchinson, owner of Durham Windows and Doors. “I often get calls to come out and fix the installation from people who have tried to install windows themselves or have used a friend or family member.” Homeowners can save themselves the cost and trouble by having their windows and doors done properly the first time. Specializing only in windows and doors, Wayne and his staff have earned a reputation for their great work. In fact, Durham Windows and Doors won the Platinum Award for Best Windows and Doors in the 2012 Readers’ Choice Awards. Wayne will come to your house to measure and will bring with him samples of the windows that he has available. Not only can you shop from the comfort of your own home, but you can also see exactly how the windows will look. “After being in this business for 36 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Homeowners may also be tempted to hire a company that is willing to work under the table. The problem is that while they may save money short-term, it could cost them everything in the long run. If a worker is not insured and gets injured in your home, you are liable. Fly by night companies also won’t be around to honour warranties or help with any issues that come up. All of the installers at Durham Windows and Doors are staff, not subcontractors, are fully insured and have their WSIB certificates. Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King Street West in Oshawa. For more information, please call Wayne at (905) 579- 2222 or 1-888-576-8575 or visit the website at www.durhamwindowsanddoors.ca. The Pickering Public Library board recently released its 2013 Community Report, highlighting the steadily increas- ing use of library facilities by residents. “In 2012, the Pickering Public Library experienced record-level use,” said Ruvette Coelho, board chairwoman, in an introduction letter to the report. That included a six-per cent increase in the number of items borrowed, with 1,265,842 items circulated, a five-per cent increase in visitors, and a four-per cent increase in program attendance. In addi- tion, the library helped bridge the digital divide with a 47-per cent increase in use of its Internet workstations and a 48-per cent increase in wireless use. Altogether, the library experienced a five-per cent increase in overall usage. “There is a downside to this increased use and efficiency,” Ms. Coelho said. “Increased use has resulted in insuf- ficient space to deliver library programs and services. The need for increased space was identified by a recent study which recommended an increase of 17,000 square feet to the Central Library.” That study, and accompanying expan- sion proposal, was adopted by council and put into the City’s future capital bud- get list for consideration. “Council is supportive and has put it in the long-term budget, but we are com- peting with a lot of community uses,” said Cathy Grant, CEO of the library. “We are experiencing the highest use ever and that’s not unusual right now, there’s a really big renaissance in librar- ies. Communities are really embrac- ing their libraries as places for life-long learning.” While Ms. Grant stresses that she and board members are proud of the library and happy to see residents using their services, it does create challenges. “Increasing use adds strain to our already small facilities,” she explained. “Everyone is struggling with budgets right now, so it’s lovely to have the com- munity use us so well, but that does come with challenges.” The board will be embarking on a fea- sibility study looking at the potential for fundraising to help pay for an expansion, and Ms. Grant said she is hopeful the City budget will allow for architectural studies on the expansion plan to be completed in 2015, which could then be used to apply for grants. Until then, Ms. Grant says the library will continue to use its existing space the best it can. “People want a place in the community where they can just be and meet others and where it’s pretty neutral,” she said. “The library has really become a gather- ing place for the community.” PICKERING -- Pickering Public Library CEO Cathy Grant says the library is now expe- riencing its ‘highest use ever’. The library board is currently embarking on a feasi- vility study, looking at fundraising to help pay for expansion of the library. My family and I love our yearly visit to the pumpkin patch, but we also keep our eyes open for fresh and innovative events that make us see the world in a new way. This year, our community has plenty of both. Here is just a sampling of what’s in store this fall. An exciting festival to watch out for is the Imagine Arts Festival, which happens in Whitby throughout Octo- ber. The goal is to celebrate an inclu- sive community that recognizes the abilities and talents of every indi- vidual. This year, Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, the Abilities Centre, Whitby Public Library and Station Gallery are com- ing together to offer arts and culture events that don’t discriminate based on physical or mental health issues. Visit www.imaginefestival.ca for the complete calendar of events, and be sure to check it out. For example, one Imagine Fest showstopper (which, not surprisingly, has already sold out) will be a performance by Juno award- winning Serena Ryder at the Regent Theatre on Oct. 10. For those without tickets, don’t despair: you can have a truly unique musical adventure at the Abilities Centre on Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. during Open Stage. This event is a drop-in, open-mic performance that will feature a technological inno- vation known as “Sound Beam.” This amazing instrument has to be seen to be believed. It uses movement to create melodies and beats. If Sound Beam is the cutting-edge, a phonograph must be deep history. For a more nostalgic take on the tech- nology of sound, visit the Uxbridge Historical Centre (Museum and Archives) on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. There, you can explore the history of the phonograph and recorded sound. Mike Bryan and Keith Wright of the Canadian Antique Phonograph Soci- ety will give an entertaining presen- tation with illustrations and demon- strations of recorded sound from the early 1900s to the 1950s. They will play early cylinder, disc and electric machines. Admission is by donation, and you can find full details at www.uxbridge- historicalcentre.com. As for favourite fall art traditions with deep roots in our community, save the date for the Oshawa Art Association’s 32nd annual Camp Samac Art Festival from Oct. 4 to 6. Admission is free, and you can find full details at www.osha- waartassociation.com. This is a fabulous chance to support our local artists, and maybe get a head start on holiday shopping. Everyone has a legal and moral duty to report known incidents of child abuse, as well as cases of suspected abuse. Last year, Durham CAS conducted 4,577 investiga- tions into possi- ble child abuse. In those investi- gations, 227 chil- dren were taken into care. “Our goal is to protect children, ideally in their own home,” says service direc- tor Brian Prousky. “Indeed, 90 per cent of our work involves working with par- ents to keep children safe.” Durham residents can participate in Child Abuse Prevention Month by wear- ing a purple ribbon and reporting any concerns about a child at risk. There is also a 5K walk/run in support of the Durham Children’s Aid Founda- tion on Oct. 9 and the foundation’s If We Had a Million Dollars Gala on Oct. 26 at the Ajax Convention Centre. But the Ajax resident is doing the next best thing: he’s organizing them and trying to drum up interest in Ajax and the entire region. “It’s not a competition yet, but we’d like to have a funniest person in Durham con- test eventually,” he says. “We’re just trying to attract people to come out and support it.” Amateur Night debuted last week and Sirota says there was a good turnout. It also runs Oct. 30, Nov. 27 and Dec. 18. The show is at 8 p.m. and people are generally given three to five minutes on stage. Not as easy as it sounds, says Sirota, both getting up on stage and filling what at first seems like a very short time period. Think of waiting at that stop light that you know takes a minute to change and count- ing off the seconds -- now multiply by three or five. “It takes believing in yourself, having something about you that says, ‘I want to lis- ten’,” he says. “There’s something unique about you that makes people want to listen.” Performing stand-up “is almost like sky-diving in a way -- you’ll feel freer and more sure of yourself, even if you just do it once.” Sirota, who MC's Amateur Nights, says Yuk Yuk's Ajax wants to establish a base of people who can perform. The best of the best may become headliners who will be given a longer, closing set on future nights. “You have to kind of earn your stripes a little bit,” he says. While Amateur Nights have been held sporadically in the past, Sirota says Yuk Yuk’s Ajax would like to make it more of a regular thing. As for Sirota, he says he’s “on the go again” after spending time raising his daughter, who started school this year. He’s a two-time Gemini Awards nominee who has performed across Canada and in the United States, including opening for Dennis Leary and Robin Williams. Sirota is an alumnus of the former Comedy Inc. series and his credits include Nikki Payne’s Fun Hour and The Jon Dore show. He had his own Comedy Now special on CTV. To take part in Amateur Nights and for more information, e-mail Sirota at ian- sirota@sympatico.ca. Yuk Yuk's Ajax is at 235 Bayly St. W. (between Westney and Harwood). Ian Sirota Characters, extras sought for video shoot Mike Ruta mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Want to be in a music video? You have a chance on Oct. 11 when Dur- ham’s The Jackson Fox Band makes one at Whisky John’s in Oshawa. Strike that. Donna Gardner, who repre- sents the band, says you’re guaranteed a spot in the video. The band has been around for almost two decades and is made up of Gard- ner’s hubby, Paul Gardner (Bowmanville), Andy Croteau (Oshawa), Randy Leipsig (AKA Jackson Fox, Ajax) and Ron Bezener (Whitby). “They have quite a following,” she says. “What we really want to do is get people who follow them in the video. “It gives their fans a chance to be a part of it and new fans to get involved.” The Jackson Fox Band is a cover band that plays clubs, birthday parties, street dances and corporate events. Gard- ner says when she books the band she is invariably asked, ‘is there something I can see’? The video will be a promotional tool on the band’s website and on YouTube. The song for the video is the Georgia Satellites’ Keep Your Hands to Yourself, which Gardner says the band has played for years and is a great dancing song. While she had no experience, she wrote a script and says “there’s going to be a number of scenes in the video working up to them playing the song.” Beyond that, Gardner says what it’s about “is a sur- prise.” After the video shoot, the band performs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gardner asks that people who want to be in the video go to thejacksonfoxband. com and sign up. They will be given a staggered arrival time between 7 and 7:30 p.m. There will be two rehearsals before the video shoot, scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. It’s the band’s first full-length video and they’re looking for “energetic, enthusias- tic people, who are willing to hoot, holler and dance in front of a live band and cam- era crew.” According to the website, 10 people will be chosen to act as characters in the video and two people who can hold a tune. Told once by a minor football coach to come back the following year when he grew some more because he was too short, Colaire didn’t get discouraged and kept work- ing and has now earned a spot on the team at Norwich University, a Division III school in Vermont. The Pickering resident started his football journey in house league with the Pickering Dolphins at the age of 13. Prior to that he played soccer with the Pickering Soc- cer Club and Ajax Soccer Club before set- tling on football. While at St. Mary Catholic High School, he played on the varsity football team. He played four years of rep ball with the Scarborough Thunder, racking up a number of personal accolades, including offensive player of the year and most outstanding player of the year awards, among many oth- ers. Among the highlights was tying an OVFL league record for most receptions in a single game with 15. In 2012, the wide receiver attended KISKI Prepatory School in Pennsylvania, completing a post-graduate program while playing football. At Norwich, the 19 year old will be majoring in biology while playing for the Cadets. Dolphins holding fundraiser AJAX -- The Ajax-Pickering Dolphins football club will be holding a celebration fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 4 There will be a raffle, silent auction and crack the safe events, with an opportunity to win up to $40,000. The event is being held at the Ajax Con- vention Centre, 550 Beck Crescent in Ajax. Cocktails begin at 6:30 p.m. with dinner to follow at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $40. The Celtics beat the Rams 23-21. Ryan PfeiffeR / MetRoland All’s not lost for Pickering Panthers BRad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Collecting points contin- ues to be a priority for the Pickering Pan- thers, who managed to grab a single one over the weekend. It could have been more, consider- ing they were ahead 2-0 into the final seven minutes of Friday’s game in Lind- say against the Muskies before allowing a pair to even it up, and then losing the extra point in overtime, falling 3-2. Spe- cial teams played a factor in the third- period goals, as Lindsay scored once on the power play and the other short-hand- ed with 1:37 to go. The mistakes are all part of the learn- ing curve early on in the Ontario Junior Hockey League season. “As long as we learn from our mistakes and our bad situations in games, then we take it as a good thing,” said GM/head coach Mike Galati. “It’s good to get two and get closer to Newmarket, but we came up one goal short.” In a short turnaround, the Panthers were back at it Saturday afternoon in the annual Governors’ Showcase in Oakville, where every team in the league competes in front of countless recruiters and scouts from the NCAA and OHL. The Panthers didn’t have much in the tank, blanked 4-0 by the Trenton Golden Hawks. “It was (Trenton) being good and us being flat,” said Galati. “We just looked a little tired from the game the night before.” The weekend presented a unique opportunity for players looking to impress enough to move to the next level. It can also provide a bit of a headache for coach- es, who are trying to employ a team game when so much is at stake individually. “It’s tough, but you have to let them know, no matter what level it is, NCAA schools, OHL, they want kids who can play within the team and not guys that can go end to end and try to do everything themselves,” said Galati, who also serves as a scout with the London Knights. “They want good team guys and guys who win.” The Panthers will be in Kingston on Sunday afternoon to round out the week- end. Heading into the weekend the Panthers are second in the North Division with a 3-3-2 record, just two points back of first- place Newmarket, but with the Panthers holding a game in hand. Nichelle Prince lighting it up COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Nichelle Prince is giving the Ohio State Buckeyes women’s soccer team a veteran presence despite being a freshman. The Ajax resident has grabbed the offensive spotlight for the team, lead- ing the team in goals with six and points with her four assists. The Pickering High School graduate has started 10 of 11 games, helping the Buckeyes to a 7-2-2 record so far in the Big 10. Head coach Lori Walker is fond of Prince’s quick pace and persistence. “She works her tail off on both sides of the ball,” Walker told the Lantern online site. “She will track defensively with the same intensity that is seen in her attack mode. “I am confident that over time (she) will be among the best goal scorers we have had at Ohio State.” With her hat trick and assist against Northeastern, Prince was named Big Ten Freshmen of the Week Sept. 9. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Oc t o b e r 3 , 2 0 1 3 28 AP CONTACT US TODAY! • BUSINESS • TECHNOLOGY • HEALTHCARE • LAW • SUPPLY CHAIN 1-888-806-1856 www.triosdurham.com OSHAWA CAMPUS: 200 JOHN ST.
