Thank Yo u! Pickering, developer talking solutions to Seaton financial woes New deal would erase predicted fiscal shortfall for planned development Moya Dillon mdillon@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- It looks like Pickering tax- payers won’t be shouldering any costs associated with the upcoming Seaton development. City staff has been meeting with Seaton developers over the summer to work out an agreement to minimize the impact of infrastructure costs related to the first phase of the planned Seaton develop- ment. The project is expected to bring 37,000 new residents to north Pickering by 2031, residents who will require facilities and services including fire stations, commu- nity centres and more. “We wrote our report to council and talked about the fact we would have a very small surplus of about $4 million over the life of Seaton, so therefore we would start in a deficit at the beginning of the development,” said Tony Prevedel, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Pickering. “They asked us to go back to developers to try to erase that short- fall, and that’s what we did.” The Fiscal Impact Report presented to council in April estimated the City would face a deficit of up to $7.7 million in cap- ital costs for the first phase of Seaton, which would run through to 2021. Council directed staff to address the financial shortfalls during Ontar- io Municipal Board (OMB) hearings on Seaton, but staff was able to hammer out a deal with developers during the sum- mer talks. “We’ve reached a tentative agreement which is a win-win,” Mr. Prevedel said. “It’s good for the city and good for allowing the developers to move for- ward.” Mr. Prevedel couldn’t comment on specifics, such as the amount settled on, since the agreement still has to go before council for approval, but said he is pleased with the results. “At a staff level we’re very comfortable with this. We have a nice contingency now so there shouldn’t be any impact to rest of the city,” he explained, noting council specifically asked that there be no impact to Pickering residents from Seaton. “With the new agreement we have, with the voluntary contributions developers have put on the table, we won’t have any impact to taxpayers from Seaton.” The next round of OMB hearings, which will begin on Aug. 26, will look at remaining issues including storm water management and other zoning or draft plan concerns. Construction on the development is expected to begin in 2014, with the first homes scheduled for construction in 2015. Brides face off, devour cake in Port Perry Annual Bridal Wars raises money for Big Brothers and Big Sisters Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- It was a battle of the brides on Sunday as 30 future wives and their friends battled it out for wedding-themed prizes. Colleen Ferguson, owner of Forever Friends Bridal Boutique in Port Perry, hosted the third annual Bridal Wars on Aug. 18 at Trillium Trails. The competition pits bride against bride for a chance to win prizes. Also a fundraiser for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of North Durham Region, the event featured raffles, a barbecue, a fash- ion show and prizes for teams with the best outfit. The teams for this year’s edition of Bridal Wars were drawn from 60 applicants. Jane Dayus-Hinch, of TV shows Wed - ding SOS and Wedding Saviours, emceed the final fashion show and the Bridal Wars cake finale. Throughout the day, each team partici- pated in a wedding-themed relay race that consisted of building a cake out of Styro- foam balls, creating wedding invitations, a garter exchange and lacing up a wedding gown. The 10 brides with the best relay times got to participate in a cake finale. A giant six-foot cake was filled with poker chips representing prizes from a wedding gown to bridesmaids’ dresses to wedding decor and flowers. “There’s $18,000 in prizes in the cake,” said Ms. Ferguson. Unable to use their hands, the brides gathered around the cake and devoured it until all of the chips were found. Cheryl Genereaux of Port Perry made it to the cake finale and called it “an awe- some day.” Even those who didn’t win had a great time bonding with their bridal parties and getting to know other brides. “It’s been a blast,” said Michelle Vardy of Whitby. “I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” Bridal party bonding and leaving wed- ding planning stress behind for the day, is a big focus of the annual event after all. Pickering mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus PICKERING -- The Durham health department is warning residents to take precautions against mosquitoes after West Nile virus was found in Pickering. Mosquitoes collected from one of the health department’s permanent mos- quito traps in Pickering on Aug. 13 test- ed positive for the virus. A total of 65 groups of mosquitoes have tested positive for WNV across the province to date, with a small number of human cases of the virus also being reported in other jurisdictions in Ontar- io. “Although evening temperatures have been cooler, it’s important to remind area residents to continue to take pre- cautions to avoid mosquito bites,” said Laura Freeland, manager of environ- mental health with the health depart- ment. “Mosquitoes are still active and posi- tive WNV mosquito results continue to be confirmed locally and across the GTA.” The mosquito-borne virus can spread to humans through the bite of an infect- ed bug, and can lead to mild illness including fever, headache, body ache, nausea, vomiting and rash on the chest, stomach or back. More serious symptoms can include muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion, tremors, numbness and sudden sensi- tivity to light. Symptoms usually develop between two and 15 days after being bitten. To minimize the risk of contracting WNV, the health department recom- mends wearing shoes, socks and light- coloured clothing including long-sleeve tops and full-length pants when outside, using insect repellent containing DEET, ensure window and door screens are in good repair and prevent the collection of stagnant water on your property. Couple celebrates 60 years at Ajax party Bernard and Joyce Woods married on Aug. 22, 1953 Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com AJAX -- It’s been 60 years, but Bernard and Joyce Woods are as in love today as the day they were married. It was evident on Saturday as the couple celebrated their dia- mond anniversary with family and friends in Ajax. The U.K. natives met when Mr. Woods was discharged from the navy in January 1949, and was looking to get his previous job with British Railways back. His future wife was a typist for the company, and they clicked almost immediately. “We went to the pictures and the first film we saw was June Haver in I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now,” Mr. Woods recalled of their first date. “It was unbeliev- able.” The couple married on Aug. 22, 1953 and they now have three children, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. “I’m lucky to reach 85 years of age, but more important, to have met the girl of my dreams,” said Mr. Woods. They are now dual U.K. and Canadian citizens -- they fell in love with Canada after their son moved here. They spent more than 10 years living in Ontar- io and became members of the Canadian Snowbirds Associa- tion, flying down to Florida every winter for 11 years. On a visit to their son David Woods’s home in Ajax on Aug. 17, what was expected to be an anni- versary celebration turned out to be a surprise chance to renew their vows. The couple happily took the opportunity and Mrs. Woods walked towards her husband to (I’d Like to Get You on a) Slow Boat to China, and they vowed to continue to love and honour each other in sickness and in health. “I think it’s absolutely amaz- ing,” said their daughter Christine Wall. “It’s wonderful. They are so together and still so in love. My dad was so happy this morning he was crying.” According to family, it isn’t unusual to see the couple hold- ing hands, joking with one anoth- er, laughing about the good times and sharing stories. But times weren’t always good. In 2010 Mrs. Woods had open heart surgery and required two valve replacements. The couple’s daughter recalls the difficult time, and said she was in tears watching her father comfort her mother, showing his undying love for his wife. “They have the good times. They have the bad times. They just pull it together,” said their son David Woods, adding, “Usu- ally Mom wins.” Having spent 60 years with the same person, the couple was able to share some pointers for young couples just starting out. “You’ve got to love each other, you’ve got to give and take and you’ve got to share all the good times and the bad times,” said Mr. Woods. Mrs. Woods said couples today don’t seem to work at their mar- riage as much as couples in the past. “Stick together and it all comes right,” she said. The couple received congratu- latory letters from a number of dignitaries, including the Queen of England, the Prime Minister of Canada, Ajax-Pickering MP Chris Alexander and Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dickson. I am a resident of Bay Ridges and my son attends Holy Redeemer Catholic School, which will be closing after the 2013/2014 school year. The recent article gives praise to Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) for balancing its budget. It stated, “The board is expecting a decline of 409 students, 325 of whom are in secondary schools.” This suggests that elementary school enrolment is down by only 84 students. The article also states that 23 second- ary teachers will be losing their jobs, yet 22 early childhood educators (ECEs) will be hired for full-day kindergarten. Does this not imply that enrolment in primary school is increasing? Are these numbers correct, or was that a typo? Last year, the Accommodations Review Committee spent thousands of hours to determine that it was necessary to close three Pickering elementary schools. As well, your newspaper has reported that Pickering’s future looks bright and that growth is inevitable. How can our city be growing, full-time kindergarten enrolment be increasing (judging by the need to hire 22 ECEs) and yet ARC determined that pri- mary school enrolment is declining? I’m hoping the rumours are incorrect in that it is not a ‘done deal’ to use Holy Redeemer’s land on Liverpool Road to erect a highrise apartment or a slew of townhouses. The rules state that residents in the area should be notified of a rezoning application and to date I have seen nothing of the sort. I sure hope there are no closed- door meetings going on that will upset us Bay Ridges residents. Karen Keating Pickering Pay donors to boost blood supplies To the editor: We all are aware of how much Canadian Blood Services is in need of blood, espe- cially over the summer months. Numerous times I’ve heard their pleas. The numbers show 51,000 donations are needed before Labour Day to ensure blood supplies stay at an adequate level. Will they reach their goal? I propose the federal government do something about the chal- lenges Canadian Blood Services faces. Why not pay donors a small amount for their time and donation? Perhaps that would change peoples’ minds who are indifferent and/or motivate others to be proactive for a good cause. If the trend continues of insufficient blood donations over time, maybe my idea will be imple- mented. Blood is essential for life, right? Remember: “It’s in you to give.” Colleen Mariona Oshawa Job creation takes a positive turn in Durham Region Durham Region is going its own way in job gains this year, posting an impressive 6.4 per cent unemployment rate compared to last year’s 8.8 per cent. Those were the numbers in the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area, which includes the communities of Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington. Ajax and Pickering have also seen year-over-year employment gains and currently have a 7.8 per cent unem- ployment rate, according to metropolisiq. com this week. The overall trend is encouraging, but there are likely to be some setbacks that will temper the seasonal gains, such as those seen in the construction sector dur- ing the warmer months. And the national economy shed jobs in July, reinforcing the sense among the unemployed that if there truly is an economic recovery underway, someone forgot to tell Canada’s employ- ers. Here at home, though, there are two points that must be made related to the economy and employment. First, Dur- ham residents who are currently or newly unemployed have options available to them through government and social ser- vice organizations. Strategic retraining and other programs, such as those offered by the Durham Region Unemployed Help Centre, can help shorten the transition between jobs for some Durham residents. And the Durham Workforce Authority is currently conducting its annual labour shed survey to identify the needs and interests of employers and job seekers in the region with a view to identifying areas for growth and helping to match people and skills with appropriate sectors. The latest job gains in Durham can indeed be interpreted positively, a sign that the local and national economy is headed in the right direction. But let us not forget that we are still emerging from the largest, most complex and painful economic reset since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It was large, deep and global and will require a period of time for things to return to nor- mal. Here at home, we can cautiously cel- ebrate the gains we’ve seen in Durham Region’s economy, acknowledge the improving jobs picture and work towards a return to prosperity, job growth and con- sumer activity. But there is a way yet to go before we can finally claim victory over the economic meltdown of 2008-2009. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Au g u s t 2 2 , 2 0 1 3 7 AP Friday August 23 rd ,Satur day August 24 th at the Pickering To wn Centr e (lower level beside the food cour t) Ve ndors Wanted! to reserve your booth Call Susan Fleming 905 579 4400 ext 2629 Register for gymnastics •dance •music •art •education •sports and more 17th annual Fall Registration Sh ow 2013 Sponsor ed By Durham Taekwondo/KarateMartialArts Don’t Miss du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Au g u s t 2 2 , 2 0 1 3 8 AP TO DO LIST -- write essay o n Bernoulli’s princ i p l e -- Do calculus p r o j e c t -- Read up on q u a n t u m p h y s i c s -- Watch the B i g B a n g T h e o r y @ 8 BAZINGA! Quick, easy mealsfor starving students Avoid the fast food temptation DURHAM -- The adjustment for a stu- dent leaving the comfort of home and heading off to college or university can be a difficult transition. And that doesn’t just mean in the class- room. The ‘Freshman 15’ phrase was coined to illustrate the weight gain that many students can incur, with 15 pounds not an uncommon amount added to the frame of most teenagers. Much of it has to do with poor eating habits, as the appeal of fast food, a lack of time, unwillingness to prepare a proper meal and a limited budget are all contributing factors to a diet that wouldn’t pass mom’s inspec- tion. What students fail to realize is that maintaining good eating habits away from home will provide more ener- gy, allow them to sleep better, improve self-esteem with a bet- ter appearance, and help combat any colds or coughs that run ram- pant through campuses and resi- dences. Whether living in residence or off campus, a supply of healthy snacks like fresh fruit, raw vegetables, trail mix, almonds and pretzels, for example, will help ease the tempta- tion to pour loose change into the vending machine. Something as simple as drinking one can of regular pop a day would be the equivalent of 77 cups of sugar over the course of a year. Gross. To help ease the habit of heading to the local fast food joint for a quick and easy order, there are a number of quick and easy alternatives for students that don’t need a lot of preparation or time. Included are a week’s worth of meals that will make any student feel like they are back at home. -- Recipes and photos by Debbie Kelly TACO PIZZA Pocketless pitas 1 pkg. of ground beef 1 pkg. of taco seasoning mix Shredded tex mex cheese 1 tomato Nacho style chips 1 cup salsa Cook ground beef Add taco seasoning and about a 1 / 4 cup of water, add one cup of sa l s a Let simmer for 5-10 mins on l o w heat Spread ground beef mixture on pita Cover with cheese Top with diced tomato Place in oven, cook for about 15 mins at 350 F Remove from oven and sprinkle b r o - ken nacho chips on top Sprinkle with a little more cheese Return to oven until cheese is m e l t - edRemove and enjoy. It is important that you ask your veterinarian which products are best for your pet. Ask the Vet:“What is Glucosamine”?Written by Dr.Melanie Dell Visit:www.veterinar ypar tner.com Finding a good pet sitter I’m a cat sitter this week and I quite enjoy it, even though I’m starting to suspect George is disappointed when I’m not his mom or dad as I walk through the door. But, his humans do get the satisfaction of knowing that their cat-loving friend is mak- ing sure George is as comfortable as possi- ble while they’re away. It got me thinking, what would happen if they didn’t have anyone they felt comfort- able with taking care of him? Leaving pets is like leaving a child for many of us. So I found some tips for those who need to hire a pet sitter, and what they should look for. Pet sitters should be professional, quali- fied individuals. A good pet sitter gives your pet exercise, knows how to tell if your pet needs veterinary attention and has a certifi- cate in First Aid and CPR. Hiring a pet sitter -- rather than leaving a pet at a kennel -- gives your pet the comfort and safety of his own home and allows him to eat the same food. Plus it will save him the stress of travelling to a kennel and meet- ing strange animals and people. If you’re looking for a pet sitter, it’s a good idea to start by asking a friend, neighbour, veterinarian, groomer or dog trainer for a recommendation. Also check the Yellow Pages under “Pet Sitting Services” or search online. But when looking online, don’t just hire anyone. It’s important to make sure you’re hiring a responsible professional. Learn all you can about prospective pet sitters’ qualifications and services. Before selecting a pet sitter, interview the candi- dates over the phone or at your home. Make sure to find out what training and qualifica- tions they have. What will happen if the pet sitter experiences car trouble or becomes ill? Do they have a backup? How will your pet sitter make sure that you have returned home? It’s best if the pet sitter provides a written service contract spelling out services and fees. And make sure to get the phone numbers of other clients to call for references. Your prospective pet sitter should come to your home to meet your pet before you hire them for the job. Watch how they inter- act with your pet and make sure your pet seems comfortable with them. If you’ll be going away for a long period of time, start by hiring the pet sitter to care for your pet during a short trip. That way, you can work out any problems before leaving for a longer period. As a pet owner, you also have responsi- bilities. You should ensure your pet is well socialized and allows strangers to handle them. Your pet’s collar should have current identification and vaccinations should be up-to-date. Leave clear instructions detailing your expectations, specific pet-care responsibil- ities and emergency contact information, including how to reach you and your vet- erinarian. And of course show the pet sitter your home’s important safety features such as the circuit breaker and security system. Remember to keep your pet sitter’s con- tact information handy on the trip in case your plans change, or if you just want to check up on your pet. And in my experience, don’t be too upset if George gives you the cold shoulder for a few days upon your return. He’ll eventually get over it. It’s just his way of saying, no matter how great the pet sit- ter was, “You better not leave me again for a very long time.” For more tips visit ontariospca.ca. Many factors behind disappearing monarchs and honeybees Scary, scary summer, starting with honey- bees and ending with monarch butterflies. Where are they? I can’t say I’ve seen a single honeybee all season. Bumblebees seem plentiful; many people have remarked about seeing so many, and since June our calendulas have been crawling with them. But is it because they’re the only bees around, and seem to stand out as a result? And can they do half the job of pollinating millions of fruit trees, vegetables and flowers that colonies of hon- eybees would? I didn’t see a single monarch on the first three butterfly counts I took part in, when normally I’d be spotting dozens. I finally saw some on the Haliburton count -- a total of four. All summer local patches of pristine milkweed have been eerily empty of mon- archs, their big oval leaves unchewed by those familiar, plump, yellow-white-and- black-striped caterpillars. Since our butterfly bush and zinnia patch started blossoming in late July, a draw for all sorts of insects, I’ve had sporadic sight- ings of visiting monarchs, one every few days. And the time we had two at once flit- ting about, playing chase above the garden, was a cause for great excitement. Whenever I see an orange and black butterfly I give it a wide, respectful berth, not wanting to stress it in any way. Even when it turns out to be a viceroy instead of a monarch. So what dire conditions are wiping eastern North America bare of these beloved long distance migrants? They’re always under- going stresses, from often-illegal logging of the oyamel fir trees high in the mountains of central Mexico where they overwinter, to a war on milkweed, their host plant, declared a “noxious weed” in many agricultural juris- dictions. But last fall the super-generation of monarchs -- the ones that hatch out in Canada, fly all the way to Mexico, and start north again in spring before laying their eggs -- ran into that severe drought in Texas and could find no flowers to nectar on. So 80 per cent fewer showed up in Michoacan. Climate change and agribusiness prac- tices are both to blame. “Roundup Ready” grain crops are genetically altered to with- stand the annual doses of herbicides that literally erase milkweed from millions of acres throughout the corn belt, where mil- lion-dollar machines plant four dozen rows in one sweep on vast treeless tracts once criss-crossed by fence rows lined with wild- flowers. Biodiversity there is a thing of the past. Plus, many grain seeds are coated with neurotoxic pesticides that stay viable with- in a plant throughout its growth, effectively killing off any insect that comes to feed on its foliage, fruit, pollen or nectar -- including honeybees and monarchs. France, Italy and Germany recently banned the use of neoni- cotinids, to save their honeybees. Canadian health officials are still “studying” the issue. Speaking up about suicide in Durham Ninth annual Walk for Suicide Awareness in Whitby Sept. 7 Parvaneh Pessian ppessian@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- If Jessica Cox really stops to think about it, there were warning signs. Her stepfather Tomas Kerr had always been an emotional person, but the family had grown accustomed to his occasional bouts of depression and accepted it as part of his personality. Even in the days leading up to his suicide last year, while they celebrated Ms. Cox’s 30th birthday in Niagara Falls, the red flags were there for anyone willing to see them. “He always used to tell me he loved me all the time but that night, he probably told me about 500 times,” she recalls. Once the initial shock of his death had worn off, Ms. Cox was overwhelmed by a flood of emotions ranging from sadness and guilt to confusion and anger. With the help of a volunteer from Distress Centre Durham who called her a couple times a week, she says she slowly began to process what had happened. “They’re also survivors and then they go through a program to be able to volunteer so it’s really just a support system of some- one who understands; someone who has gone through it and they know about the ups and downs, and the craziness of the emotions that are going along with that.” Distress Centre Durham works to com- bat survivor isolation with support groups and a “call out” phone support program. People can also call the centre’s 24-hour helpline, which has been running since 1970. “I can’t even fathom getting through the first year without them,” says Ms. Cox, a former Oshawa resident who now lives in Toronto. “They really have put things in perspec- tive for me, knowing that when I’m so angry with him, that that’s normal and knowing that when I feel guilty, that’s nor- mal.” Now, she is hoping to reach out to oth- ers in similar positions with the help of her company, The Anger Managers. She and others at the Toronto-based anger management clinic are participat- ing in the ninth annual Walk for Suicide Awareness in Whitby next month and have set a goal to raise $5,000 for Distress Cen- tre Durham. The team is hosting three anger man- agement seminars in Oshawa and Toronto with proceeds going to the walk in memo- ry of Mr. Kerr. While suicide is never easy to talk about, Ms. Cox says enhanced education and awareness on the matter through meeting other survivors is what helped her cope with losing her stepfather. “People kill themselves because they feel ashamed ... they feel like there is some- thing innately wrong with them and they feel like the only option better than suffer- ing here is dying,” she says. “But then that gets passed onto the survi- vors where they’re ashamed to even say that my (loved one) committed suicide ... so definitely educating yourself on what you’re feeling afterwards will help, and then on top of that, educating society on shame and why we feel that, and how to get over it.” The first anger management seminar will be held on Monday, Aug. 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Lake Vista Park, 450 Emerald Ave., Oshawa. That will be followed by the second seminar on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Pleasant View Library, 575 Van Horne Ave., Toronto from 10 a.m. to noon and the third semi- nar on Thursday, Sept. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Northern District Library, 40 Orchard View Blvd., Toronto. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. The Walk for Suicide Awareness takes place on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Heydenshore Park, 589 Water St., Whitby. Not only will you be helping the environment, but you will also be setting a good example for our children. Here are a few tips to help your back-to- school week be as green as possible. Reuse everything and anything you can. If you have children in elementary school, you may have thousands of pencil crayons in your home, or at least enough to go without buying new ones every year. The same goes for pencils, pens, markers, glue sticks, back- packs and more. If you do need to buy new, look for school supplies made from recycled and eco-friendly materials and those that use minimal packaging. Make a list before you shop for school supplies, it will help you remember what you wanted to purchase and limit impulse buying. Pack a waste-free lunch. If you have packed children’s lunches, you’ve probably given in to individually packaged snacks. The con- venience of these items is just that: con- venience. Unfortunately, deep down, you know these processed lunches and snacks create more garbage and aren’t as healthy as fresh lunches and snacks. A waste-free lunch contains no throwaway packaging and produces no waste. Food is packed in reusable containers and drinks in refillable bottles. Hit the closets and have your children give you a fashion show with last year’s school clothes to see what fits and what doesn’t. Donate any used items that don’t fit or orga- nize a clothes swap with friends. The Region has launched a pilot program “Reuse days. Pass it on!” in partnership with local chari- ties. Reuse Days are held one Saturday per month until October to encourage residents to drop off reusable items for local charities. For more information on event dates and acceptable material, visit our website (dur- ham.ca/wasteevents). Manage your batteries. If you replace bat- teries in your cellphone, laptop or any other electronic device, remember to recycle them. Don’t put batteries in the garbage. If you use a lot of disposable batteries, consid- er switching to rechargeables. Reuse or recycle your electronics. If you or your family are discarding old computer equipment or electronic devices, find some- one who could use them or take your old electronics to your local waste management facility for recycling. Reduce, reuse and recycle. It’s a lifestyle we should practise all year long and going back to school is no exception. -- Katherine Ross-Perron is a waste manage- ment technician with the Region of Durham. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Au g u s t 2 2 , 2 0 1 3 19 AP *We’d love to include advertised product but we can’t.lude advertised product but we can’t.e’d love to inc*W *See store for detailsNOOOHSTONAPPLIANCES! It’s not often I question that decision but I did after seeing Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. The movie has been out for a few weeks and isn’t doing great at the box office. After seeing it I know why. This sequel doesn’t really add anything to the first movie, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lighting Thief, except maybe to shorten the title. The original movie was fun and didn’t take itself too seriously. This time, Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon, must take part in a quest to save his fellow demi-gods and ultimately, the world. He’s joined on his quest for the Golden Fleece by a Satyr, the daughter of Athena and a half brother he didn’t know he had, a cyclops. Along the way they run into Hermes, played by the scene-stealing Nathan Fil- lion, who has the best line in the movie, a reference to his former TV series Firefly which was cancelled after one year. In the end the four friends retrieve the fleece and save the world, not that there was ever any doubt. And not before one of them is brought back from the dead, which happens too often in this movie but then again it is set in a mythical world. The movie wastes no time getting to the main story and a satisfying conclusion. There is one great scene with a mechanical bull and the 3D is actually put to good use but it isn’t enough for me to recommend seeing this in a movie theatre. It would be a good family movie to see on Blu-ray on a Saturday night after watch- ing a hockey game. Percy Jackson gets a two out of five. Mike johnston Managing Editor Movie Time Durham artist seeks to combine art, music, photography Will McGuirk newsroom@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Wanderlust is the title of a series of works based on the Uxbridge trails by Darrin Davis. It was exhibited in the windows of several businesses in down- town Uxbridge. Wanderlust could also describe Davis’s creative drive as he moves between painting, music and, most recent- ly, photography. Originally from Oshawa, where he attend- ed the O’Neill arts program, Davis gradu- ated from York University (painting) and moved to Toronto with his band, The Shift. Now he lives in Uxbridge with his wife Amy Jefferies and they have quickly become a part of that town’s vibrant arts scene. “One of the things that attracted us to Uxbridge was the trails there,” Davis says. “I’m out there every day. I felt like there was not enough photos of the trails and with my friend, (illustrator) Tracey Walker, we decided to make a calendar. She sug- gested to get the Town involved and the Trail Association and it got a bit of a mind of its own.” Davis recalled (Region of Durham tour- ism manager) Kerri King from when his band played the Moon Room Bandwarz and contacted her. With her help, the calendar morphed into a brochure which is now available at the beginning of the trails. The booklet fea- tures both his photographs and spotlights local businesses. “I was talking to local shop owners about how people use the trails but stay on the trails and don’t come into town,” Davis says. “That became the thrust of the project, to get people into the town and vice versa. If it was just me it would have been just an art show but it grew into a great event. Four- teen of the shops in town purchased one of my prints on canvas for their windows and we called it Merchant Trails.” While The Shift has broken up, Davis has formed a new band with Jefferies, who is also a musician. The Darrin Davis Band plays a rootsy country sound, a re-discov- ery for him as it was what he enjoyed play- ing growing up in Oshawa. “Since we’ve moved out to Uxbridge, we have hosted a couple of house concerts and it’s been really amazing to see just how fulfilled everyone was watching it,” he says. “I feel that connection I felt I was missing out on by playing in Toronto. It got me back into why I played music in the first place, like I’m in it for the right reasons again.” Music and painting have been two sides of Davis for much of his life. He started with the saxophone quite young, played in a band in high school called Magic Box and, like most kids, he was always drawing, he says. His thesis in university was a series of paintings and a string of songs inspired by the art. It’s a common theme for him. A new album based on photographs of his grandfather’s life in Seagrave is his next project. The research and songwriting has already taken three years. “It’s going to be about 14 or 15 songs,” Davis says. “I’ve been recording sketches as I get ideas, but I’m going to weave frag- ments of the songs in between the songs -- like track 2 will be the sax line that will be in track 10, like how classical music introduc- es motifs. Also, I will be incorporating old photos of farming and baseball and other stuff. I’d like to put it out on vinyl because that would give a platform for the visuals.” “What Wanderlust taught me was that I always thought really small about my stuff. The hardest thing was choosing where to put the energy but now I can pick a proj- ect that combines art and music and pho- tography and all of that. I feel there’s more momentum around it now. “Finding a way to combine all of them is the next step.” Darrin Davis likes wanderin’ suBMiTTeD pHoTo DURHAM -- Uxbridge resident Darrin Davis, a musician, artist and photographer, with wife and fellow musician Amy Jefferies. Where Jessica Klimkait is concerned, it seems the sky is the limit, which in this case is the very top of an Olympic podi- um. “It’s a goal and she will definitely reach that goal,” Doherty says, without a second’s hesitation, of the 16-year- old Whitby resident. “She’s probably the most special (judoka) Canada has had in a long, long time.” Klimkait gave a vivid demonstration of that at the recent Cadet World Champi- onships in Miami, where she reeled off five straight wins, without surrendering a single point, to win gold at the under-18 tournament. Competing in the under-52-kilogram weight class, Klimkait opened the com- petition with back-to-back wins by ippon, over Portugal’s Carolina Silva and Austra- lia’s Tinka Easton, then won her quarter- final match against Mongolia’s Khulan Tseregbaatar with a yuko. She won by an ippon over Belorussian Ulyana Minenk- ova in the semis, and finished in style by beating the Georgian Mariam Janashvili with another ippon to claim gold. “It’s a hard feeling to explain because I’ve been working for this for a long time and it’s something I’ve really wanted,” said Klimkait, who had qualified once before but was competing at her first world championship. “When I finally won it was really surreal and really hard to take in. Obviously I was really, really happy.” Klimkait, who is set to enter Grade 12 at Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School, had recently moved up a weight class and wasn’t much familiar with the competition. But, she came in with an impeccable record, having never lost a provincial match, and this year winning national titles in both the U18 and U21 age groups, while finishing second in senior. “I was a little bit nervous, but I was more anxious,” she explained. “I just really had to focus mentally because I didn’t want nerves to distract me. “It was weird at first because I didn’t know what to expect,” she added. “But I knew that it didn’t matter because of all the training I’d been doing, and all the hard work. I knew that I could compete with these girls.” Like her coach, Klimkait has set her sights on the Olympics, and both believe she could do so as early as the 2016 Games in Brazil. “That’s definitely a goal that’s awhile away, but it’s something that we’re going to work hard for,” said Klimkait, who trains three times a week in Ajax and another three times with a Judo Ontario high performance program. Doherty knew he had a special student right from the get-go. The chief instruc- tor at the Ajax club since 1994, he has seen plenty of excellent athletes over the years, but none quite like Klimkait. “Judo’s a pretty tough sport, a physical sport, and she took to that aspect of it and trained hard. She could do chin-ups and push-ups when she was four years old. She was a natural at it,” he explained. “She’s strong in both standing tech- niques and ground techniques,” he con- tinued. “The commentators at the world championships said she was the most well-rounded judoka there, which meant she had everything. She had speed, she had conditioning, she had grips, she had throws ... she’s pretty well-rounded. She doesn’t have a weak spot.” Another club member, two-time nation- al champion Bradley Langlois of Oshawa, lost a close first match to Slovenia’s Luka Harpf in the under-66-kg category. Sky is the limit for Klimkait AJAX -- Jessica Klimkait, of Whitby, won a world judo championship in Miami. She trains with the Ajax Budokan club. Jason LieBregts / MetroLand dragon Boat Durham athletes paddle to gold in Hungary DURHAM -- Seven athletes from Durham Region helped propel the Canadian Junior Dragon Boat team to its best ever showing in Szeged, Hungary. The team won a total of seven gold, five silver and three bronze medals en route to win- ning the country’s first ever Junior World Cup. Brady Gooding, Warren Lundy, Ariel Wha- ley, Emily Rudling, Victoria Ruffle, Dana Cook and Cole Bannister were part of a 52-member contingent of athletes from across the country who competed in the under 18 division. The experience of representing their country is one that they won’t soon forget. Emily Rudling, a student at Pickering High School, said “I was thrilled at the chance to rep- resent my country doing something I love.” Dana Cook added that, “Hearing our national anthem being played is an experience I will never forget.” The team trained out of the Pickering Rouge Canoe Club, and Darren Mossman, the club’s head coach, played an integral role train- ing the athletes to face the world’s best. “I was thrilled at how well the athletes per- formed,” Mossman said. “The great thing about paddle sports is that it’s never too late to start, and if you put in a great deal of hard work, you can rise quickly through the ranks. These ath- letes proved just that.” There are still spots available in the Pickering Rouge Canoe Club’s summer drag- on boat camps. After that the Ajax resident joined the varsity hockey team and they won the AUS Division and went on to the CIS finals winning bronze. The Pickering High School graduate didn’t think it could get any better, but tried out for the U20 Canadian national rugby team and was not only named to the team but also became captain. The team went to England for the Nations Cup tournament against England South Africa and the USA. Canada made it to the final against the USA and won the Nations Cup, the only other country to ever win the cup other than England. On returning home from the cup she was contacted by Rugby Canada and was carded and will be starting to train with the national team in Victoria, British Columbia for rugby 7s. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Au g u s t 2 2 , 2 0 1 3 25 AP Get the Skills you Need for your New Career DISCOVER IMPROVE ACHIEVE 1-888-806-1856 triosdurham.com CONTACTUS TODAY! • BUSINESS • TECHNOLOGY • HEALTHCARE • LAW • SUPPLY CHAIN 1-888-806-1856 triosdurham.com OSHAWA: 200 JOHN ST.
