It was a beautiful sunny Sunday at this year’s Brits on the Lake in downtown Port Perry. The streets were lined with an array of stunning classic cars, with some dating back to the early 1930s. There were black ones, red ones, old, new, four-wheeled and three- wheeled. That’s right, a three-wheeled car. Car lovers stood with their jaws dropped as they watched a green 1934 Rayleigh Safety 7 go by. The Rayleigh was one of the oldest cars at the event. The vehicle, like many at the show, came with its owners and a long his- tory of fascinating trials and tribulations. Peter Svilans and his wife, of Thornhill, call their ride a cyclecar. These cars were manu- factured between 1910 and the early 1930s. The rise of cyclecars was a direct result of reduced taxation both for registration and annual licences of lightweight small-engined cars. If you had less than four wheels and your vehicle weighed less than 850 pounds, it could be classified as a motorcycle. It was a tax dodge, considering motorcycles only had to pay half the road tax. According to Mr. Svilans, his model is one- of-a-kind. “It’s pretty scarce, it belonged to the British Club. There’s about 20 elderly gents in the club who have these things but only about five are actually running cars,” he said. Mr. Svilans found it originally as a pile of scrap in an old Florida barn. It took about five years of hobby time to restore the vehi- cle. “Typically with any restoration you take it down to the last nut and bolt and build it up the way it was built from the factory. The colour is accurate. The car is from Notting- ham. They have a Robin Hood thing going on there so it’s called Sherwood green of course,” he said with a laugh. The crowd was drawn by the vehicle. Some people stood there crossed-armed, turning their heads side-to-side, looking perplexed. “People are astonished because it’s actual- ly a three-wheeled car. I’ve opened the front, but if you leave the hood down, people are crawling underneath and looking in the grill saying, what the heck is going on here.” Durham East Enders British Car Club host- ed the valve cover races. Kids had an oppor- tunity to put their hand-crafted valve cover cars to the test in a drag race down a sloped track. All proceeds went to the Port Perry Hospital Foundation. Eight-year-old, and two-time champion, Owen MacPherson of Ajax raced his award-winning car named Tracker. “I got first one year, and then I got first again and my brother got second and best in the show,” said Owen. Owen’s younger brother, Thomas MacPherson, 3, was ecstatic after winning the first heat with his Thomas the Tank Engine. “It’s good. The wood came off,” he said while pointing to his car. About 300 cars showed up this year at Brits on the Lake. It was pack with people from all over Ontario. Organizer Stewart Bennett says it’s the most they have ever had. “This is the first year without rain ... we knew that if we got a fine day, we would have a sell-out. And it’s great. The people love it. They love the street, store owners love it, and obviously our residents and visitors love it.” PORT PERRY -- Philip and Becca Hallett from Pickering polished their 1994 Rolls Royce Silver Spur, currently on sale at $42,000, at the fifth annual Brits on the Lake car show. The popular annual event attracted more than 100 cars and hundreds of visitors to the town. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission announced on Friday the decision to renew OPG’s licence for Pickering, to run from Sept. 1, 2013 to Aug. 31, 2018. The decision came following public hearings in the winter and spring into OPG’s request. The CNSC had given OPG a temporary two- month operating licence in June while the commission deliberated. OPG spokesman Neal Kelly said, “We’re very pleased with the CNSC decision and the reli- censing process overall. Our safety and opera- tions records earned us a five-year licence.” The CNSC attached some conditions on the approval, which Mr. Kelly said the company will address. “We’ll undertake a thorough review of the conditions. We’ve already started working on the conditions,” Mr. Kelly noted. Conditions include the four Pickering ‘B’ reactors not operating beyond ‘210,000 effec- tive full power hours’ until further hearings are held in the future. Another condition is an assessment of enhancements the CNSC put in place follow- ing the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Dai- ichi reactors in Japan. The reactors suffered a meltdown following a devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. Also, OPG has to prepare an emergency management public information document, which will be distributed to all households in the Pickering area, outlining emergency response plans of all involved organizations, such as Emergency Management Ontario and the Durham Emergency Management Office. This pamphlet has to ready by the end of June 2014. The hearings were held in Ottawa on Feb. 20 and in Pickering from May 29 to 31. In addi- tion to presentations by OPG and CNSC staff, 136 intervenors also presented submissions to the commission. Shawn-Patrick Stensil, a nuclear analyst for Greenpeace, said, “It’s not an ideal world, but I think the commission should be commend- ed for putting OPG on a short leash, consider- ing the risk at the Pickering nuclear generat- ing station. “I think the commission has done the right thing and put OPG on a short leash and told them to come back with a safety case,” Mr. Stensil added. The Ontario Electronic Stewardship noted the Region collected 704,000 kilograms of e-waste in 2012. “I’m thrilled to see the enthusiasm Durham residents are showing when it comes to prop- erly disposing of their unwanted electron- ics,” works commissioner Cliff Curtis said in a press release. “Working with OES has provid- ed our community with more convenient and efficient ways to ensure end-of-life electronics are diverted from landfill, which is an impor- tant step in reaching our goal of 70-per cent diversion.” E-waste includes laptops, mobile devices, tablets, monitors, old computers and TVs. About 90 per cent of content, such as precious metals, glass and plastic, can be recovered. Also, many electronic products contain mate- rials such as lead, cadmium, mercury, bro- mine and other hazardous materials that may have negative environmental impacts when disposed of improperly. E-waste can be diverted free of charge by taking it to one of the three Regional transfer stations. People living in apartments and condomin- ium buildings can dispose of their e-waste by placing it in yellow bins in a program is being phased in across Durham. The Region provides curbside e-waste col- lection for residents living in Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, by appointment only. Call 1-800-667-5671 to schedule an appointment. Will you pay for news online? The Toronto Star is banking on it with this week’s introduction of a paywall. Nine dollars and 99 cents per month if you’re not a subscriber, free if you are. There are two schools of thought, the first being there is so much free content available on the Internet, why would any- one pay for it? It’s a reasonable question. To test the theory I Googled ‘Rob Ford’ which turned up 102 articles on the infamous mayor of Toronto and his exploits as a ‘regular guy’ at last weekend’s Taste of the Danforth. The Toronto Star’s article surfaced at the top of the list, but there were articles by all sorts of very credible news outlets. Did I need to read the Star’s? No. Did I want to read the Star’s? Yes. Part- ly because the Star, like us, is also in the Torstar family. But also because I’m inter- ested in their approach to the story given their open feud with the big fella. Bottom line is I didn’t have to pay because I could get the story elsewhere. The second school of thought is that someone has to pay for the product, which in this case is news. Traditionally in newspapers, radio and television it’s been advertisers who have largely provided the income that funds newsrooms. With those advertising dollars dwindling, some, like The Star, are turning to the news consum- ers to help finance journalism. Sure there’s lots of information out there, but the paywall proponents believe either that their content is so superior to their competitors that you will pay OR that it is so unique you will pay. There real test will be the one you and I take when we meet our 10-story limit on a paywalled site: will we dig deep for a sub- scription or will we cozy up to the guys who are giving it away for free? -- Joanne Burghardt is Editor-in-Chief of the Metroland Media Group newspapers in Durham Region, Cobourg and Port Hope. Jessica Cox’s blunt and emotionally draining exposure to the issue of suicide came with her stepfather’s death last year. More recently, another Durham fam- ily was forced to confront the issue when a man’s body was discovered floating off the shore near Lakeview Park in Oshawa. Police deemed it a suicide. Much earlier this year, Durham police officials issued a plea to the public when a Pickering man went missing, just a day before his body was discovered. He had taken his own life. Each of these men made deeply person- al decisions to take their own lives, ending whatever emotional, physical or spiritual pain that characterized their daily existence. Overall, suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in Canada. It was the final solution for 3,890 Canadians in 2009 -- 11.5 suicides per 100,000 citizens -- according to Statistics Canada. Among younger Canadians aged 15 to 34, suicide is the second leading cause of death. In the simplest terms, it is an issue that must be discussed more openly, more plain- ly and more frequently to help raise aware- ness, promote alternatives, and help foster a greater sense of hope and change. And there is help available right here at home via a variety of resources. Family doc- tors can provide timely references to appro- priate health care professionals and special- ists, while several local social organizations such as Durham Mental Health Services, the Region of Durham’s health department, the Durham branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association, and local hospitals can provide support and guidance for individu- als and their family members. As well, Jessica Cox would like to remind Durham residents about the upcoming Walk for Suicide Awareness in Whitby on Sept. 7, a community-based event that will raise necessary awareness and money for the cause. There is still some shame and stigma asso- ciated with mental illness. But the emotion- al and physical pain of dealing with mental illness and depression is real for sufferers despite the fact that larger society cannot see a bandage or a cast. The illness and psy- chological injury to sufferers is real -- but it is also treatable. Pay attention to your own mental health, certainly, but try to remain sensitive and aware of those to whom you are closest. Let’s end the stigma, talk about the illnesses that affect mental health, and help lift peo- ple. It can be done. Bravo, Francesca! To the editor: Re: ‘Summer won’t be a bummer for Whitby girl’, news, durhamregion.com, July 31, 2013. I had the delightful opportunity to par- take in a delicious glass of lemonade from this inspiring little girl on Aug. 1. I asked Francesca what her charity was and she replied cancer, which also took the life of my brother seven years ago from non-Hodgkins lymphoma, then I gave her some spare change from my coin purse. I then asked Francesca, “Did you squeeze the lemons yourself?” She said no, and that she used lemon juice. Then I asked if the lemons were organic -- Francesca had to ponder this question a few seconds until I said I was only kidding! When I returned home that evening and was reading the paper, I immediate- ly saw the picture and article and told my children, ”This is the girl I bought lemon- ade from this evening ... it was delicious!” Francesca, you are a shining example of what makes our town and community so special, unique and welcoming by giving of yourself and helping others to make a difference in the world! However, being a dabbler in everything entertainment means each day can take a life of its own, morphing into a new adven- ture for the 53-year-old father of two. “The funny thing is, in my world, there really is no such thing as an average day because every day is just so completely different,” he says. “Just to give you an idea, my agent will very often call me the night before, usu- ally around 5:30 or 6:30, and lay out the next day for me, which makes it impossible to try and plan any- thing. You would just get something set up and he’d say you’ve got to be here and here for auditions the next day. “Then, some days, you’ll have nothing whatso- ever, not even a writing project on the go. Those are the days where you kind of just spend it mood-ling or day- dreaming about the next project. While everyone likes to have the odd off day, Mr. Crone desires for and thrives in those busy days, even if they start in a laid-back, calm manner. “On a busy a day, I’m up early,” he says. “I generally try to start my day with a little bit of meditation to put a good vibe out there for the day and to mentally get myself set for what I would like to have hap- pen that day. Then you get on with the business of things.” Some days that includes sitting down to pen the well-read weekly column Mr. Crone contributes to Metroland Media Group papers across Durham Region or taking additional calls from his agent, who is turning over stones in search of that next great project Mr. Crone can contribute to. There’s also script reading and reviewing, either of productions he is currently involved in or others that may be prospective. And of course there are the rehearsals and audi- tions. Those could have him in and around Toronto several times a day, which can be quite a task with everything else that is going on around him. “I’ll spend part of the day getting ready, preparing for those,” he says. “If there’s any script to be learned or memorized or characters to be prepared, I’ll spend a chunk of time doing that. I do like to be thoroughly prepared when I am going into film and TV auditions. “I don’t want to make an ass of myself once I get into the room,” he adds with a chuckle. As enjoyable as some of these days can be for Mr. Crone, he admits they do have a downside at times. “It can be kind of a lonely existence sometimes,” he explains. “Because I am by myself -- which I mean is the way I like it -- but when you’re auditioning you drive down to the location or cast- ing studio you’re in your own head space. You may see a number of other actors in the studio that you may know or are friends, but even so everybody is kind of doing their own thing getting ready to do their own audition. So you go in, do your thing, and you’re out in about five minutes, usually, and then back in the car going to the next thing or going home. It’s a roll of the dice because now you just wait for that phone call from your agent to say ‘yeah you got it’, or whatever. Adding to that, Mr. Crone says that the numbers in terms of ratio for auditions to roles earned isn’t exactly encouraging for most in the industry. What is encouraging though, says Mr. Crone, is that even on the most down of days in the business, he has what he believes is the best pick-me-up going. No matter how any given day has gone, he can hang his hat on what he calls the best part of his day and that’s being around his two sons, 21-year-old Duncan and 19-year-old Connor. “My kids. I think having my kids and being able to hang around with my kids so much,” he says. “I refer to myself as a self-unem- ployed-actor and being able to be home with them for so much of their formative years, that time that we had and still have is great. “I can’t think of a better legacy for anybody ... Anything I may have written or anything I have done on television or whatever, that’s all good, but I will have left two pretty wonderful people here after me. I think that’s my best thing. They are my best thing.” Being Neil A day in the life of Durham entertainer Neil Crone DURhaM -- neil Crone has worn out many soles in pursuit of his craft. The Port Perry resident shares a typical day in the life of a Canadian entertainer. Theraceisontosupportchildren’shealth Ajax & Pickering hospital Kelly joins the Pandas in Alberta Defenceman looking to play right away with university team Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- After weighing all of her university options, Morgan Kelly made a decision that she wasn’t even considering as she made her way through high school. During that time period, she had made up her mind that the NCAA route was the way to go to continue her education and play hockey at the next level. But when it came time to commit, she looked closely at her choices, thought about what was best for her future, and changed her mind. Instead, the University of Alberta, and the Pandas hockey program, will benefit from her decision. “In the beginning I was pushing for Divi- sion-I no matter what,” she says of going to the United States on a scholarship. “But then when I started to figure out what I wanted to do after school, I want to be a teacher, one of the biggest reasons I chose Alberta is because of their education pro- gram. That’s one of their No. 1 programs.” The 18-year-old defenceman from Pickering started in the Durham West Lightning minor system, then switched over to the Toronto Aeros for three season before staying with the Aeros for two sea- sons in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League. It was while playing at a showcase tour- nament in Stoney Creek this past season that coaches from Alberta first approached Kelly. It piqued her interest enough to visit the campus in November. When she put everything together, it seemed like Alberta was an obvious choice. It has a strong academic program, offers five years of playing eligibility, and if she opted to go to the States, she was most likely facing more time in school upon her return home. The coaches have also pointed out that she is ready to crack the lineup in her fresh- man season. “That was one of the biggest things is that I’m most likely going to be playing my first year and playing a lot,” she says, eager to make a contribution right away. The Dunbarton graduate maintained good grades, making the honour roll in Grade 12. For her efforts, Alberta will be covering much of her costs with financial assistance. Photo By Peter redman Pro boxing debut will have to wait for Kyle Marsh AJAX -- Kyle Marsh will have to wait a lit- tle longer to make his professional boxing debut. The Ajax native and graduate of Denis O’Connor was scheduled to step into the ring on Saturday night in Brampton at the Powerade Centre. But the plug was pulled the on the show for a variety of reasons, and the entire professional card was can- celled. The lightweight (135 pounds) will now work towards a scheduled fight on Aug. 24 in Nova Scotia, where he will make his pro debut. As an amateur, Marsh compiled a 20-6 record. major Series lacrosse Redmen fall behind in series with Peterborough PETERBOROUGH -- It was only a matter of time before John Grant Jr. made his pres- ence felt in a big way. Grant, at age 38 still considered one of the best lacrosse players in the world, played like THE best again on Monday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, scoring five goals and setting up four more in a 15-9 win for the Lakers over the Brooklin Redmen. The Redmen are now on the ropes in the best-of-seven Major Series Lacrosse semifi- nal, trailing 3-2 with Game 6 Wednesday at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre and, they hope, Game 7 back in Peterborough Thurs- day. Both start at 8 p.m. Jr. a lacrosse Game 7 victory puts Warriors into Minto Cup WHITBY -- Late into the third period of the seventh and deciding game of the Ontario Jr. A league final, the Whitby Warriors were less than four minutes away from their season coming to an end. Today, they are packing for a flight bound for British Columbia, where they will compete for a Minto Cup Canadian championship. Things turned that quickly in Six Nations on Sunday night as the Warriors, who fended off elimination on Friday night with a 15-11 victory on their home floor at Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Game 6, prevailed in a 9-8 nailbiter, scoring twice in the final 3:50 to capture the Ontario title. The Minto Cup will run from Aug. 17-26, with a four team round robin, followed by a best-of-five championship series. Also included in the mix are the host New West- minster Salmonbellies, who reached the Brit- ish Columbia final, losing out to the champion Coquitlam Adanac, who qualified. Rounding out the four teams is the Alberta champion Okotoks Raiders. Jr. B lacrosse Green Gaels still alive CLARINGTON -- Hold off on putting the ice in on the main pad of the Rickard Recreation Complex. The Clarington Green Gaels will need their home floor one more time after extend- ing their Ontario Jr. B final series against the Six Nations Rebels, fending off elimination on Monday night with a 13-9 victory at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Brantford. The win puts the Green Gaels right back into the series, down two games to one, with Game 4 of the best-of-five Wednesday night in Bowmanville at 8 p.m. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Au g u s t 1 4 , 2 0 1 3 12 AP NEW!NEW!DISCOVER IMPROVE ACHIEVE Oshawa: 200 John St. W. oshawatrucking.com 4-month internship with leading-edge transportation companies Introduction to Supply Chain & Logistics Commercial Driver Improvement (Defensive Driving) Course Certificate Air Brake Training 50 hours of one-on-one in-cab instruction Training on state-of-the-art 3D simulators 40WEEKS PROFESSIONAL TRANSPORT OPERATOR Air Brake Training Commercial Driver Improvement (Defensive Driving) Course Certificate Preparation for AZ Class license Training on state-of-the-art 3D simulators 8WEEKS TRACTOR-TRAILER (AZ) Member of:Delivered inPartnership with: Courses include a diploma from theTruck Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO).
