Lawyer Selwyn Pieters also asked a judge to strike the guilty plea entered by the youth last fall, citing what he described as “duplicitous double dealing” by the prosecutor’s office. “We’re asking you to grant a stay of proceedings on the basis of abuse of process,” Mr. Pieters told Ontario Court Justice Mary Teresa Devlin Tuesday. Charges that are stayed might never be prosecut- ed. “The new charges, as laid at the juncture they were laid, would shock the conscience,” Mr. Pieters said. Prosecutor Dave Slessor replied that the Crown has acted properly in the teen’s case, laying addi- tional charges on the basis of new information that wasn’t available at the time of the original inci- dent in July 2012. “There’s nothing tyrannical or unjustly tough about the decision (to lay additional charges),” Mr. Slessor told the judge. “There isn’t a breach here for abuse of process.” The dispute arises from a decision by the Crown to lay new charges against the youth, now 18, three months after he pleaded guilty to robbery in rela- tion to an incident on the morning in July 16, 2012 in Pickering. Durham fans scream for New Kids Pickering Town Centre filled with fans of popular boy band Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Forget shopping. Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight and Danny Wood were the reason the Pickering Town Centre’s parking lot was packed on Saturday. The famous boy band New Kids on the Block, formed in the 1980s, stopped by the mall for an autograph session and a ques- tion-and-answer period to promote their new album, 10. Fans hoping to get a glimpse of the guys who stole the hearts of millions of teens and tweens in the 80s and 90s filled the mall’s centre court, and even the upper level was packed with fans, shouting the guys’ names and holding homemade signs and nostalgic memorabilia. “My birthday was on Monday and I won tickets on Wednesday so it was an awesome birthday,” said April Burton, a long-time fan who won a wrist band, scoring her auto- graphs from the four of the five band mem- bers in attendance. Donnie Wahlberg, currently on the set of Blue Bloods, couldn’t get away and was unable to attend. But even his fans, many ini- tially upset by the news he would be missing, screamed for the other four. Ajax resident Fanja Dunn was there for one main reason. “My favourite is Jordan Knight because he’s so dreamy,” she said. “He has a great voice. He’s the total package.” The forever fan, who first fell in love with the group when she was a kid living in Mada- gascar, has met the five guys and seen them in concert a number of times over the years. She was thrilled to learn she’d only have to go to the next town over to see them this time. “It’s like a dream come true,” she said. Ms. Dunn’s favourite New Kids song is If You Go Away. Rachel Mekli, who’s been a fan since the ninth grade and had her son Trey in tow to get an autograph, likes Dirty Dancing. When the group was asked what their favourite album was, Mr. McIntyre said Hangin’ Tough, New Kids’ second album, had a certain spirit to it that really stood out to him, something he feels about the latest album, 10. “I feel like this album has that kind of spe- cial spirit too,” he said. When asked whether they plan to tour again with the Backstreet Boys -- New Kids toured with that band in the past -- Mr. Knight said “That tour was one of the most amazing experiences we’ve had. “We’re not sure if we’re going to do another tour with them but we wouldn’t say no to it.” PICKERING -- The New Kids on the Block were at the Pickering Town Centre to sign auto- graphs and answer questions from fans. Which Of These Neuropathy Symptoms Do Yo u Suffer From? Neuropathy affects every part of your life --walking,sitting,and even sleeping. Maybe you’ve had multiple tests, only to find out no one has any idea what you have.Maybe you’ve even been put on a drug with heavy side effects. My name is Dr.Clay Kosinko, clinic director at Health First Family Chiropractic.I’ve been helping people with neuropathy and nerve problems for years. More than 500,000 Canadians suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. This painful condition interferes with your body’s ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy? Data from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners’Job Analysis of Chiropractic lists arm and leg neuropathy as the second most common nerve problem treated by chiropractors. Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone. The Single Most Important Solution To Yo ur Neuropathy By using gentle techniques,I’m able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away. Numerous studies have proven chiropractic’s effectiveness in helping nerve conditions... “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments],with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”–British Medical Journal Patients showed an 85.5%resolution of the nerve symptoms after only 9 chiropractic treatments.-Journal of Chiropractic Medicine 2008 With chiropractic care, patients had “significant improvement in perceived comfort and function, nerve conduction and finger sensation overall.” –JMPT 1998 “Significant increase in grip strength and normalization of motor and sensory latencies were noted. Orthopedic tests were negative.Symptoms dissipated.” –JMPT 1994 What these studies mean is that with chiropractic care, you could soon be enjoying life...without those aggravating nerve problems. Read what these Chiropractic Patients are saying: “Before Chiropractic, I suffered with severe low back pain and couldn’t even move my big toe.I could not walk for 10 min.without having to stop. Now,I am getting movement in my toe and back is improving.I wish I knew about chiropractic earlier.” -Abel E., Pickering “Before Chiropractic I could not walk far before my back would hurt and I would get tingling in my legs. Now my back is moving better and I can walk without any problems.” -Linda F., Pickering “Before Chiropractic...I could not live.Constant back pain &Sciatica all the time. For the first time in years I feel good and sciatica is gone. Durham police say robbery is the likely motive for the incident, which took place at 9:10 a.m. in the vicinity of Lester B. Pearson Public School. “My opinion is it was an attempted robbery,” said Sergeant Nancy van Rooy. “(The victim) escaped what could have been more of a confrontation.” The 13-year-old boy told police he was walking on a path between Dela- ney Drive and Daniels Crescent when he was approached from behind by a man with a knife who called out to him. The boy ran toward the school with the suspect in pursuit and managed to escape, police said. He told school officials, who contacted police. Cops searched the area but did not locate the suspect. He’s described as a white man, about six feet two, with a large build and stubble on his face, He wore dark clothing. Police set up command unit at Ajax school after teen grabbed AJAX -- The Durham Regional Police will be onsite at Romeo Dallaire Public School in Ajax collecting tips from the public after a student was grabbed nearby. The police Mobile Command Vehicle will be set up at the school on April 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. for residents to stop by and share information or tips about an incident that saw a 13-year-old girl grabbed last week. On April 12 the student was walking back to school through a nearby wooded area at lunch- time when she was approached by an unknown man and grabbed by the wrist. The man touched the girl in an inappropriate way, but she was able to pull free and run back to the school. Police have released a sketch of the sus- pect, who is described as an adult white male with a medium build. He was unshaven with grey stubble and may have had blue or green eyes. He was wearing a dark blue toque, a dark blue or black windbreaker or winter coat with a zipper down the front and light grey track pants. The teen, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, robbed a Pickering veterinary clinic, pointing a plastic cap gun at a worker and demanding “eutha- nasia drugs”, court heard. The worker handed over vials of an antibi- otic and the youth was confronted outside by Durham police. An officer fired several times at the youth, hitting him twice. During a court appearance in October, the youth pleaded guilty to a count of robbery. Justice Devlin heard the teen, who has strug- gled throughout his life with mental illness, was intent on committing suicide when he committed the robbery. The early plea was entered so the youth could undergo an assessment that would recommend the best course of treatment for him, court heard. The Crown indicated it was not seeking jail time for the boy. In early January, however, the Crown’s office announced it was laying more charges -- assault and using an imitation firearm dur- ing flight -- based on the teen’s confrontation with the officer outside the clinic. Mr. Sles- sor said that while the new charges hadn’t changed the Crown’s position on sentencing, there is a public interest in having them pros- ecuted. Tuesday he told the judge the charges were based on information that arose during an investigation by the Special Investigations Unit, which reviews incidents in which civil- ians are injured or killed by police. That inves- tigation revealed that the youth had pointed the plastic gun at the officer, he said. “The allegation is that (the youth) pointed an imitation firearm at a police officer,” Mr. Slessor said. “To me it is a very distinct and separate criminal act” from the robbery, he said. “Had all these facts been known at the time, these charges would have been laid and before the court in October,” Mr. slessor said. Mr. Pieters said the decision to lay new charges amounted to the Crown reneging on the arrangement that led to last fall’s guilty plea. “The Crown didn’t come before you (in October) telling you there may be other charges,” he told Justice Devlin. “Obviously if the Crown had told you that ... there may have been a different complexion to all of this.” In addition to calling for a striking of the plea and a stay of proceedings, Mr. Pieters has made the unusual move of asking the judge to grant the defence costs of $15,000 in the case. “The conduct in this case is highly arbitrary and in bad faith,” Mr. Pieters said. “Such con- duct does not conform with the hallmarks of fundamental justice.” Justice Devlin is to rule on the application next month. LAWYER from page 1 Residents ask for vigilance on traffic from new Pickering development Fifty new homes slated for West Shore area Moya Dillon mdillon@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- West Shore residents are ask- ing council to pay close attention to traffic issues when considering a proposed devel- opment on Park Crescent. Residents from the surrounding neighbour- hoods were in attendance at a planning and development committee meeting on April 8 to make their voices heard on the project, which includes 51 new detached homes with frontages between 14 and 18 metres. “One of the biggest ways for the reduction of traffic concerns would be for the build- er to stick with something more in line with the surrounding neighbourhood in terms of frontages,” said neighbour John Evanoff, not- ing larger lots would cut down the number of homes and therefore the number of addi- tional cars. “When you look at frontages sur- rounding this development, there’s nothing in that range, they’re all larger.” Bryce Jordan, representing developer the Sorbara Group, noted the proposal had already been reduced from 54 homes to 51 by increasing lot frontages to address con- cerns raised by residents at a public meeting in November. “Certainly the lot frontages, particularly those on Park Crescent, are slightly larger than those originally proposed,” he explained. Paul White, president of the Fairport Beach Neighbourhood Association, suggested add- ing a one-way connection between Cliffview Road and Downland Drive so residents of the new development would have another option to exit the area besides onto Park Crescent. “You’ve got a big new subdivision to take the place of one big house that was there all these years, it’s probably going to introduce 100 to 150 cars,” he said. “If you make that portion a one-way exit, you’re sharing the traffic load within the communities. We think it’s a very innovative solution.” He pointed to the Nesbit-Newman House, a heritage home currently located on the lands, which the developers have preserved on a large lot, as an example of how the develop- ers and the community can work together. “You can’t say I’m here now and I don’t want anything else to come in, all you can say is this is what’s here and we want something that’s going to fit in,” he said. Councillors urged staff to look at traffic alternatives, including Mr. White’s suggestion of a one-way exit, as part of a staff report on the development that will be brought back to council at a future meeting. The financial impacts to city residents in terms of the infrastructure costs must be comparable to the funds the development generates for the City. Seaton, a massive development in north Pickering, means in its first phase more than 12,000 new residential units built and an estimated 37,000 new Pickering resi- dents. And while the development charges from these new dwellings would normally generate enough cash for the City to build the required infrastructure, there is a math problem here with the bottom line being the City won’t have enough money to stay in the red. Not even close. A study the City commissioned to look at the financial impacts of Seaton indicates that Pickering taxpayers will be on the hook for upwards of $11 million up to 2027. After that, the City would see an estimated $4.4 million operating surplus by 2031. The City will have to spend considerable resources on parks, two recreation complex- es and two library branches and two, new equipped fire stations. And of course that doesn’t include the basics such as roads, sidewalks and stormwater infrastructure. As resident Marion Thomas told coun- cillors at an April 15 executive committee meeting, the financial impact study is based on assumptions in terms of the number of houses built per year and the employment lands. If they prove incorrect, the cost to the City and its taxpayers could easily increase. She also noted Pickering’s low development charges, less than $10,000 per unit. Pickering councillors said they shared Ms. Thomas’s concerns and, as they have noted in the past where Seaton is concerned, their hands are largely tied. Mayor Dave Ryan said a provincial for- mula determines the development charges, and that’s the crux of the issue: what it will cost the City to support the development is estimated to be much more than it will receive from it. “This is not a City of Pickering plan and never has been,” he said. “We need to do the best we can with what we’ve got.” Councillor Jennifer O’Connell echoed that thought, noting, “Our only option is to fight at the board and get as much as we can pos- sibly get.” That would be the May Ontario Municipal Board hearing, where City staff at council’s urging will make a case for addressing the financial imbalance by setting up a memo- randum of understanding with Seaton land- owners. If there is justice in the world, or at least at the OMB, the board will recognize the unfairness of the situation. Ajax bike lanes not living up to billing To the editor: As a longtime resident of Ajax, I commend Town council for its insightful development of the waterfront. The same cannot be said for the accepted proposal for the redevelop- ment of Harwood Avenue South. We should have known things were about to take a turn for the worse when our tax dollars were paying for public art. It reached the height of insanity with the proposal to construct a picture frame at the lakefront to 'frame the lake' at a cost of many thou- sands of our dollars. Since art is subjective, it should be paid for by private contribu- tions, not tax dollars. Now council has passed the Harwood South project despite considerable disap- proval from many residents in attendance at the public meetings. It is a politically correct-driven agenda that lacks common sense and reality. On a recent Sunday the weather was sunny and warm and I drove around Ajax to see how busy the existing bike lanes were. Not a single bicycle was observed. Council has stated that bicycle lanes will bring revenue to the Town as they pedal their way to the waterfront. What utter nonsense. This notion is delusional; the waterfront is surrounded by residential, not commer- cial. Adding bike lanes will not increase the number of cyclists, the existing enthusiasts who live a distance from the waterfront will continue to do what they have always done -- drive to the lake, take the bike off their vehicle and cycle on the trail. It’s an expensive plan that has all the ear- marks of McGuinty’s politically correct, green, wind power debacle. The plan is a waste of tax dollars and an attempt to satisfy a sheep-like mentality to jump on the popu- lar green bandwagon regardless of reason, logic or common sense. Neville Pike Ajax Give some if you take some To the editor: Did you see the sign? Free Compost! That’s right, free! Please read on to where it says, ‘Exchange non-perishable food item for compost’. That’s right, exchange! Fair enough for a portion of gardener’s gold, isn’t it? Think of it as a donation. Last year I was appalled at the number of non-donors in the lineup. There I was in my 16-year-old Toyota with four food items (and I don’t mean boxed macaroni and cheese), and in front of me were late-model Ford trucks, Cadil- lac SUVs, and even a Lexus. There were plenty of containers for com- post but no donations to the food banks. This shameful, unmindful behaviour is rampant. Let’s try and make up for last year and show that we can do better. It costs so little to show thanks. Loss of trees for highway dismaying It’s Earth Day this week, a great motiva- tion to head outdoors and give a little back to our beautiful planet. Pick up the garbage blown around your neighbour- hood by winter winds, or plant a tree. At the very least, go for a walk in your favor- ite natural area and welcome spring. I ran into Brandon McWalters as I was doing just that in Thickson’s Woods in south Whitby, peering up at migrant kinglets, phoebes and creepers with a smile on my face. Brandon had taken his young family to see the American avocet, an elegant long-legged shore- bird, that showed up at Oshawa Second Marsh. Then they’d swung by Thickson’s Woods to view the baby great horned owls. It was Brandon who found the first merlin nest in Durham Region, half a dozen years ago. We chatted about owls, avocets and other mutual interests, trees being one of them, and soon found our- selves inadvertently sharing horror sto- ries about all the clear-cutting going on for the Hwy. 407 extension. I’d read the warnings in the paper about the coming destruction, like those “viewer discretion advised, scenes from the following program may be upsetting to some viewers” on TV. But it came as a shock to me to be driving home from Port Perry and suddenly, at Thornton and Winchester, finding trees chopped off at the knees and lying on their sides, one after another after another. Big trees, little trees, their branches stretched out on the earth instead of reaching for the sky. It took me a minute to realize what was happening -- that this must be where the new highway was going -- so I carried on across Winchester to see how wide a swath was being cleared. And I was dismayed. Where Brandon lives, near Heber Down Conservation Area, he could hear chainsaws all day every day for a week, and his description of the clear- cut destruction visible all along Hwy. 7 made me glad I don’t have to commute that route. We talked about “progress,” and the importance of moving growing crowds of us humans ever faster across the countryside. We talked about how “they” are promising to plant one baby tree for every giant they cut down. It will take a century before the saplings that sur- vive are big and leafy enough to capture half the carbon dioxide the fallen trees processed every year, in our warming world. We talked about a woodlot with tower- ing pines that Brandon knows about and would love to protect, and I said I’d love to help him. So here’s another thing you might do for Earth Day: send a donation to sup- port the Nature Conservancy of Canada, World Wildlife Fund or one of Ontario’s land trusts working to protect woods and wetlands for future generations. Margaret Carney Out Walking Durham needs more greyhounds Retired racing dogs a well-kept secret Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com Retired greyhounds are a well-kept secret in Ontario, and a GTA-based organization that finds new homes for the retired rac- ing dogs is hoping to raise awareness this month on what great pets they make. Greyhounds in Need of Adoption, a char- ity dedicated to finding loving, responsible homes for retired racing greyhounds, is promoting National Greyhound Adoption Month in April. Greyhounds are not the high-strung, high-maintenance dogs that some might think. Jennifer Christianson, GiNA’s director of adoptions, explained the dogs they “re- home” have been raised on a very regi- mented routine, so they’re easy to train. They’re great for apartments because other than necessary walks, they’re quite content with just lazing around. “They’re affectionately referred to as the 45-mile-per-hour couch potato,” said Ms. Christianson. That’s because they’re used to racing every three days for 30 seconds and then just relaxing in between. “They take the definition of retirement to a whole new level,” she said. They’re pack animals, so once they’ve realized their new owners are part of their pack, they want to please them. “They’re all very gentle, loving animals,” she said. “They want to be with their peo- ple. They want their people to be happy.” People who take in the retired racing dogs get an adult, but the dos are often very puppy-like because life in a home is new to them, having spent the majority of their lives in a racing kennel. They’re not used to stairs or glass doors, for example, and are being introduced to a new way of life. “Guaranteed every single one of them will try to walk through a glass door,” Ms. Christianson laughed. And they can be left at home alone for the day, so they’re great for people who work full-time and are worried about leaving the dog behind for those eight hours. Since breeding is very tightly controlled, there are very few health problems with greyhounds, added Ms. Christianson. GiNA matches those interested in adopt- ing a greyhound with the dog, rather than simply letting people pick out the one they find the most attractive. “We think the personality match is much more important,” Ms. Christianson said. In 2012, GiNA found homes for 40 retired greyhounds. The charity just brought some dogs up from Wheeling, West Virginia, where the volunteers also went on a behind-the- scenes visit of the facility. The dogs will spend two to three weeks in foster homes, getting used to their new way of life, and then they’ll be ready for their forever home. Visit meetgina.ca for more information. Pet Valu Bowmanville will host a barbecue on Saturday, April 20 with all proceeds going to local animal rescues, such as the Humane Society of Durham Region. Have a hot dog or hamburger and support the animals. There will also be a draw for prizes and treats for both pets and people. Dogs are welcome for a meet and mingle with other dogs in the area. It’s all taking place at 2377 Hwy. 2 in Bowmanville. Call 905-623-6613 for more information. Pickering moving to maximize community engagement Residents invited to comment on new report PICKERING -- The City is seek- ing help from residents in developing a new community engagement strategy. The City will be moving for- ward with the new strategy based on the recently released Together and Towards report, which details residents’ involve- ment with the community. The report includes input from stakeholder interviews and resident and staff focus groups and offers recommendations for a new vision of community engagement. “An engaged community is a prosperous community,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “While I’m pleased with the existing level of community engagement in Pickering, I wel- come this opportunity to fur- ther promote civic involvement and strengthen ties with our residents.” The City is inviting residents to provide input on the report, which is available online at www.pickering.ca. City staff will take all com- ments into consideration dur- ing the preparation of a report to council detailing recommen- dations on how to proceed with the new strategy, which will be presented to council at an upcoming meeting. “Community engagement is identified as one of our five cor- porate priorities for the City of Pickering; we are deeply aware of the value of well designed community engagement,” said Tony Prevedel, CAO for the City. “By engaging the community, the munic- ipality is building a trustful, ongoing and collaborative relationship with our resi- dents. By doing so, staff can both change and implement our common vision of Pickering.” Anyone wishing to comment on the report can contact Cathy Grant, CEO of the Pickering Public Library, at cathyg@pic- net.org, or Marisa Carpino, director of cul- ture and recreation, at mcarpino@picker- ing.ca. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 1 8 , 2 0 1 3 9 AP NOOOTAXE V E N T GRAND OPENING SALE ON NOW! During a first appearance at the Oshawa courthouse on April 17, lawyers represent- ing the City of Pickering’s Compliance Audit Committee and Coun. Dickerson agreed to a trial start date of May 27. Coun. Dickerson has been charged with five offences under the Municipal Elec- tions Act, including failing to value con- tributions of goods and services, filing an incorrect financial statement, using his account for purposes other than the cam- paign, exceeding the spending limit and accepting invalid campaign contributions. Councillor Dickerson has maintained his innocence, saying he misinterpreted the act, which he called flawed. Committee members voted in favour of pursuing legal action against the vet- eran politician during a meeting on Feb. 20, after receiving legal counsel from spe- cial prosecutor David Reiter and reviewing the findings of an earlier compliance audit that found Coun. Dickerson in contraven- tion of the Municipal Elections Act. If found guilty of the charges, Coun. Dickerson could face penalties including fines or losing his council seat. 1) Failed to value the contributions of goods and/ or services that were given to him and accepted by him or on his behalf for his election campaign. Specifically contributions of services provided by Larry Bristed, Shannon Currie, Lucy Campise and JoAnn Kerr Dickerson to his campaign. 2) Filing a financial statement that was incor- rect or did not comply with the act. Payments to Larry Bristed, Shannon Currie, Lucy Campise and JoAnn Dickerson that were listed as expenses were not expenses. Amounts for parties or other expressions of appreciation after the close of voting that were included in the statement were not actually used for those purposes. The value of signs from the 2006 election that were reused in the 2010 election was not included. Failed to include a $750 con- tribution accepted between Oct. 1 and Oct. 13, 2010. Failed to reflect as contributions the value of services provided by Larry Bristed, Shannon Currie, Lucy Campise and JoAnn Kerr Dickerson. 3) Used campaign account for purposes other than his election campaign. Disbursed honoraria not related to the expens- es of the election campaign. Monies disbursed for parties or other expressions of appreciation after the close of voting were not used for par- ties or other expressions of appreciation. $750 was disbursed to Carpet Corral on or around Nov. 5, 2010, without authority under the act. 4) Incurred expenses in excess of the spend- ing limit calculated in accordance with the prescribed limit under the act. 5) Accepted campaign contributions from persons other than those entitled to make a contribution. the charges du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 1 8 , 2 0 1 3 12 AP Mercedes-Benz Durham 250 Thickson Road Sout h,Whitby,ON •1-888-698-2085 •www.mercedesbenzdurham.com Our executives have wa rmed them up for yo u. The April 10 explosion, which occurred about 150 feet underground in one of the shafts being bored for the project, prompt- ed Pickering councillors Bill McLean and Peter Rodrigues to raise concerns at a Dur- ham Region works committee meeting the following day, asking whether methane gas released by the tunnelling operation could potentially create problems for residents. “I wanted to know if methane could trav- el laterally into people’s homes,” said Coun. McLean, noting the gas is prevalent among the shale bed the project is tunnelling through, although it is generally harmless when released into the open atmosphere. “When it’s contained that’s when the dan- ger is, but I’d like some more information about it.” Coun. Rodrigues also expressed dismay at a lack of communication about the proj- ect from York Region to both Durham and the City. “My concern is that there’s just not enough information coming through on this,” he said. Works staff was asked to look into the meth- ane issue and report back. An investigation into the explosion by the Ministry of Labour is ongoing, and on April 12 a stop-work order was issued to contrac- tor Strabag Inc. “No further tunnelling oper- ations on the project should be undertaken until that order is withdrawn,” said William Lin, a spokesman for the ministry. As part of that order, Strabag will be required to provide a written assessment of the haz- ards of the tunnelling operation as it’s being carried out and provide additional training to workers before resuming the project. Patrick Casey, director of corporate com- munications for York Region, said it’s too early to tell how the stop-work order will affect the overall project. “Our contractor is continuing to work with the ministry,” he said of Strabag. “Once we can lift that stop-work order, work will continue and at that time we will be able to reassess any timelines. Everyone would like to learn what happened in order to have a better understanding of the incident.” Of the four men injured, one remains in hospital undergoing treatment for burns. The remaining three were released within two days of the explosion. Mr. Lin said the cause of the explosion is still unknown and the investigation is ongo- ing. When questioned about reports from a worker on site that a pocket of methane gas ignited and caused the blast, Mr. Casey said that information “seems to be correct.” du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 1 8 , 2 0 1 3 13 AP Hwy# 12, Myrtle Stn. Durham Region asks residents to keep an eye on water hydrants DURHAM -- The Durham Region works department is asking residents to be on the lookout for anyone illegally taking water from hydrants. Every year thousands of litres of water are taken from fire hydrants in Dur- ham, increasing water system costs. Companies can obtain permits to legally take a specified amount of water for a cost. Permits can be obtained at Durham Region’s depots. For information, visit www.durham.ca/depots. To report any suspected water theft, residents are asked to call 905-576-3352 or 1-800-372-1102 ext. 3495 with details about location, company name, licence plate and/or a picture. Durham residents must dispose of gardening hazardous waste properly: Region DURHAM -- The Durham Region works department is reminding residents that gardening waste such as pesticides, herbi- cides, insecticides and fertilizers are haz- ardous and should be disposed of prop- erly. These hazardous wastes should not be poured down any drains or be placed in any garbage, blue box, sewer or storm water systems. Empty containers for these products are not recyclable and should be thrown in the garbage. Residents can dispose of their hazard- ous gardening waste for free at any Dur- ham waste management facility during regular operating hours. Plants are the means that volunteer Sigrid Squire uses to serve her community, the City of Pickering. Mrs. Squire, 68, has volunteered her time to the Pickering Horticultural Society for 14 years. She now serves as treasurer, but over time has worked her way through the society, sitting as president for four years. The society maintains public gardens in the city and runs Pickering Bloom, a program where home and business owners can have volunteers from the society evaluate their gardens and give them tips or get recognized for their work. The initiative is supported by the City to encourage people to maintain an appealing streetscape. “As long as I’m physically able to, I’ll do what I can,” said Mrs. Squire, who was a gardener for her own enjoyment for a little over a decade before it led to her taking on an active role at the horticultural society. “It was something to do outside the home,” she said, having once been a full-time mother of two boys and then an entrepreneur out of her home. “My main concern was to do something for the community ... I didn’t want to just go to a meeting and go back home.” Every Tuesday morning Mrs. Squire gets together with several other volunteers to maintain the gardens around town. She said she does a good job at preventing her gardening from interfering with her family life. “I’ve made it clear to my family that Tuesdays are my horticultural days,” she said. On top of that, she dedicates about three hours per week doing her work as treasurer. In 2011, Mrs. Squire received the OHA Certificate of Merit from the Ontario Horticultural Association. Also that year the City honoured Mrs. Squire with a volunteer award. Gardeners with all levels of experience are welcome to join the society and enhance or share their gardening skills. AJAX -- Ajax couple and avid volunteers Margaret and David Middleton are immigrants themselves. But coming from England, Ms. Middleton said they never went through some of the language and cultural barriers as did immigrants from some other countries. Mr. and Ms. Middleton volunteer in a list of activities to help people develop English skills, particularly immigrants. “I like people and I enjoy seeing people progress,” said Mr. Middleton. Two years ago he helped start the community garden in St. Andrew’s Park near Ajax Town Hall. The garden is divided into individual plots for the public to grow their own food for themselves or their family. And Mr. Middleton works with volunteers to care for some plots that grow food to be donated to the Salvation Army food bank, and also for cooking classes at the Welcome Centre -- a resource hub for new Canadians. The gardens and the Welcome Centre cooking classes let people practise English in a casual, social, accepting environment. Ms. Middleton, a retired graphic designer, also volunteers in a number of ways to get people socializing in English. She volunteers in a walking group in the summer, strolling along the waterfront, usually with five to 10 clients. “We’ll walk in the morning with people who are new immigrants and we talk about Canada. (We’ll) talk about what’s going on in the news or we’ll talk about different aspects of Canada,” she explained. Ms. Middleton, usually joined by her husband, does tutoring in the conversation circle, where she helps people working on their English prepare for vital skills such as job interviews. For the past year Ms. Middleton has brought these teaching skills to a women’s group, where women who speak English as a second language practise language by socializing with crafts and other hands-on projects. Mr. Middleton, 60, expects to work a few more years as a computer consultant but does not see an end to his volunteering. “When you volunteer you get a lot out of it yourself,” he said. “You meet people who are nothing like you and it’s enlightening ... I don’t sacrifice my time at all, I really enjoy it.” Mr. Middleton also volunteers his time serving on the Durham Environmental Committee. for more info about volunteering with Durham’s only LG BTQ focused helpline visit distresscentredurham.com du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 1 8 , 2 0 1 3 17 AP A special thank you to our amazing volunteers who dedicate their time, skills and friendship in helping our clients maintain their independence and quality of life in their homes. They are two of the 23 artists featured in the upcoming Durham West Arts Centre 2013 Spring Studio Tour. Dufaj is an immigrant from Poland who paints surrealist and abstract art from life experiences. Reidt is a semi-retired health-and-safety consultant who sculpts stone representa- tions of nature. For Dufaj, every surrealist painting tells a story about her experiences or what she has observed. Sometimes, it is a painful story. “My biggest fear is public exposure,” she says. “I paint to tell a story ... but you’re scared of baring your soul, your strengths and your weaknesses.” While the passion and inspiration comes from within for Dufaj, it comes from outside for Reidt. “Growing up, we didn’t have iPods or video games,” says Reidt. “My entertain- ment was going walking in the woods .... I developed a passion for nature.” When deciding what to create, he exam- ines a stone from all angles to decide what it’s going to become and what story it will tell. “I look for pieces that allow me to build motion into an animal,” he says. “Each piece has to speak for itself.” While Dufaj and Reidt have similar moti- vations when deciding the subject of their art, that’s where all similarity ends. Dufaj bares herself in her artwork. As a result, the hardest thing for her to do is let go. “After I sold my first one, I was depressed for two weeks,” says Dufaj. “I’ve gotten much better now ... you paint it so that you can share it with people.” Reidt, on the other hand, doesn’t feel the same level of attachment and instead actively promotes the sale of his work. Both artists’ studios, along with the loca- tions featuring the 13 additional Durham- based artists, will be open to the public on April 27 and April 28, when visitors can view their work. Including guest appearances, the tour fea- tures the work of 24 artists in total, among them renowned sculptors Edward Falken- berg of Pickering and Geordie Lishman of Ajax. The free, self-guided tour begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. each day. New this year, two art galleries are also tour stops: Diane Huson is showcasing her work at Silver- Stone Gallery, 617 Liverpool Rd., Pickering, and Marie Blanchard-Thomas is showing at Cultural Expressions Art Gallery, 62 Old Kingston Rd., Ajax. For more information and a map of the artists’ locations, visit dwac.ca/spring. html. PICKERING -- Gordon Reidt is one of 24 artists who are featured on the 2013 Durham West Studio Tour. He is a stone sculptor who took up the hobby in 2006. Sabrina byrneS / Metroland Ontario Writers’ Conference in Ajax May 3, 4 AJAX -- Many authors call Durham home and while there are many highlights on the region’s arts and entertainment calendar, the Ontario’s Writers’ Conference tops their list. “We are ecstatic to be celebrating the fifth anniversary of the conference,” states co-chairwoman and program coordinator Barb Hunt of Scugog. “The entire committee works hard to make every year better than the last and this year is no different.” The heart of the conference is the very busy May 4 schedule, which features work- shops and lectures. The former includes Casting Your Characters with Annette McLeod, Throwing Your Voice with Andrew Borkowski and Great Voices of CanLit Including Your Own with Alissa York. But those who don’t register for the conference can also take part in the buzz it creates. The May 3 Festival of Authors is open to the public and runs from 7 to 10 p.m. The emcee is Uxbridge author Ted Barris and the guest readers are Miranda Hill, Ray Robertson and Susan Swan. Light refreshments are served at the cafe-style event and, as last year’s was so popular, in 2013 attendees will enjoy a larger venue, Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility in Ajax, also the site of the main conference events. New to the conference this year are master classes for experienced writers on May 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. The deadline to register for the confer- ence has been extended to April 24. Reg- ister at www.thewritersconference.com. Tickets for the Festival of Authors are $20 and available online at the conference website or by e-mailing info@thewriter- sconference.com. Sabrina byrneS / Metroland AJAX -- Author Andrew Borkowski, who received the Toronto Book Award last fall for his work Copernicus Avenue, is lead- ing a workshop on May 4 at the Ontario Writers’ Conference in Ajax. www.openbooktoronto.coM Pine Ridge athlete earns track scholarship Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Ajax track-and-field athlete Tyra Forbes struggled to come to a decision about which of two universities to attend on schol- arship in the fall. But, while she admits it wasn’t the deciding factor, Forbes took into account her mother’s urgings. Forbes considered main scholarship offers from the University of West Virginia and the University of Buffalo, paying two visits to the U. of Buffalo in February and last Septem- ber, and to the U. of West Virginia in Febru- ary. Both, she says, made it difficult to make a crucial decision. When all was said and done, however, her mother got her wish: to have her daughter attend the bordertown university in Buffalo. “My mom wanted me close to home,” says Forbes, 18, who ran track and field while attending Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering. “I just kind of compared the two. Buffalo was a lot closer to home and they have a bet- ter (track-and-field) program and a better team. I feel pretty good; I’m happy to be part of that,” she said. Earning a scholarship, says Forbes, was something she wanted to achieve since ele- mentary school. And, now, to be attending the University of Buffalo is a good feeling, noting the universtiy is a solid match for her athletically and academically. “They needed women jumpers,” she said of the Bulls’ track-and-field team. “They have a strong men’s team. They liked that I could sprint, hurdle and long jump as well.” Her bread-and-butter event, she notes, is the triple jump, an event that she not only dominated at the Durham Region level, but also at the Ontario Federation of Schools Ath- letic Association championships, winning provincial gold in 2012. She also competes in the long jump and the 100-metre hurdles. A member of the Pickering-based XCEL Track Club, which incorporates high school track athletes from Pine Ridge and Donald A. Wilson school in Whitby, Forbes says the club has also proven helpful in attaining a scholarship to an NCAA Division 1 school. And, her club coaches are also pleased that she’s earned her full scholarship to the New York university, which competes in the Mid- America Conference. “We are very happy and relieved that it worked out quite nicely after three years,” said XCEL coach Jason McKenzie, who noted Roxanne Woodley and Ian Seale have provid- ed the day-to-day coaching for Forbes, while he was instrumental in helping her through the scholarship process. McKenzie concurs that it is Forbes’ versatil- ity as an athlete that drew the U. of Buffalo to offer her a full scholarship ride. “She’s good enough to compete and score in the Mid America Conference right now. Tyra could potentially hurdle, sprint and jump at the NCAA Division 1 level if Buffalo so chooses,” said McKenzie, adding she’s the first athlete from the fledgling XCEL club to earn a U.S. scholarship. Forbes notes she’ll head to Buffalo to begin school in late August where she will study French as her major. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 1 8 , 2 0 1 3 21 AP Pickering hosts Hennebury Squash Tourney PICKERING -- The annual Lee Hennebury Memorial Squash tournament had a very successful run at the Pickering Rec Centre.
