Join us for a Free Information Session Tuesday,April 9 at 4 pm at the Latvian Centre, 4 Credit Union Drive (corner of Eglinton) Don’t hang up, it’s the mayor of Ajax Town holding virtual meeting to get input from residents on April 11 Keith GilliGan kgilligan@durhamregion.com AJAX -- It’s not a telemarketer, it’s the mayor of Ajax. On Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. the Town will be holding a virtual town hall meeting, providing residents the oppor- tunity to raise a concern or voice an opin- ion. It’s a chance to “engage residents with- out them having to leave the comfort of their homes,” Christie McLardie, the Town’s communications manager, told council on Monday. Both Pickering and Whitby have held similar meetings, with thousands of resi- dents in each community taking part, she noted. In an interview, Mayor Steve Parish said, “We’re always looking for new ways to reach out and engage the public. We want feed back on initiatives.” The aim of the meeting is to have a “dia- logue and input. Where they see us doing right and where we’re not doing right. Things we should be doing. That’s what it’s really all about,” he said. Rather than a standard meeting, with people having to travel to the venue, the Town is “trying new things, new technol- ogy. Facebook, virtual town halls. We’ve got to use them,” he added. “It’s ongoing. We want a full dialogue with citizens.” On April 9, all Ajax households will receive an advanced invitation call. On April 11, around 7 p.m., residents can call in to take part. Ms. McLardie told council about 3,000 residents could participate, based on previous practices. One of the intents of the virtual meet- ing is to gather comments on the Town’s 2011-2014 Community Action Plan. The plan has four objectives -- strategic development and economic prosperity, excellence in service delivery and gover- nance, strong sense of community, and to be a leader in environmental sustain- ability. There are 21 strategies within the objec- tives. Ms. McLardie noted two new strate- gies were added after the initial list was drawn up -- the Pan Am Games 2015, and new Town history book. Ajax is the site of baseball and softball for the Pan Am Games. She noted by the end of 2012, about one-third of the plan had been com- pleted, while work on just over half of remaining issues is underway. The action plan is a “blueprint” for council and staff, Ms. McLardie said. A communications plan has been developed so residents can learn about the action plan and comment on it, she noted, adding that will continue until April 12. The plan can be reviewed at the web- site, www.letstalkajax.com. She said there’s interactive storyboards showcasing accomplishments from last year. Anyone wanting to register for the vir- tual town hall meeting can also do so at the website. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 4 , 2 0 1 3 3 AP PAY NOTAX EVENTSale Ends Sunday - 5pm Sharp! 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 Hours: Mon.• Tues.• Wed. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 www.furnituregalleries.ca *Credit equal to the value of the HST. The disease she had defeated just a few years earlier had grabbed hold of her again, and this time it wasn’t letting go. Diagnosed with terminal breast cancer at the age of 37, Denise had a choice. Sponsored by: From Page 1 “The historical society has been col- lecting historical documents for the last decade so this is really one of the richest collections outside of the library,” said Becky George, library historian. “This donation will bring the two col- lections together, which is fantastic for residents. It’s like one-stop shopping.” The art collection will be hung in the library, with information book- lets detailing each piece. Most of the archived materials, which include maps, letters, historical memorabilia and even an historic postcard collection, will be available in the library’s Local History Room. “Unfortunately for my wife, some of it will have to remain at my house for now,” Mr. Sabean joked of the lack of space at the library. “I have boxes and boxes of stuff I can’t get to,” Ms. George said of the local his- tory collection. Cathy Grant, CEO of the library, said relief could be on the way soon, as the library board is proposing a dedicat- ed archives room complete with tem- perature and humidity controls as part of plans for expansion, which could happen as early as 2015, depending on funding availability. “There are a lot of collections in the community that we would love to take in and make accessible to everyone,” she explained. She noted there are 20 metres of local historical documents housed at the pro- vincial archives at Queen’s Park that could be repatriated to Pickering if a new facility is built. “There’s an overall community need to store these records somewhere but we’ve run out of space. These records are important, the stories you discover in the community are absolutely fasci- nating.” Requests received by the local his- tory room include information for a new book on Canadian musician Neil Young, who lived in Pickering for a time, requests from genealogists as far away as Hawaii for birth, marriage and death records and historical land use informa- tion for current planning purposes. “These documents tell us about the life and identity of those who came before us who would otherwise be just a statis- tic,” Ms. George said of the collection. “Archives are important to the munic- ipality because this is our collective memory. We can’t plan for the future without knowing our past.” Dedicated archives considered by library board Doris Speirs: Local resident, artist and men- tor Out of 29 pieces of art donated to the Pickering Public Library by the Pickering Township Historical Society in April, 26 came from the private collection of Doris and Murray Spiers. Ms. Speirs began painting in 1923, with some advice from Group of Seven painter A.Y. Jackson. Within the course of a year J.E.H MacDonald had cleared a space for her use in his own studio and in 1926 she was invited to contribute to the Group of Seven exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontar- io. In addition to her painting, Ms. Speirs was also an avid collector and published ornithologist and served as inspiration for fellow female artists such as Bess Harris. She died at the Ajax-Pickering hospital in 1989 just short of her 95th birthday, and had an eye for art to the very end. “When she was in the hospital at the end I got a call from the nurse saying ‘your grand- mother wants to see you, and she said to bring any art you’ve done recently’,” recalls Adele Koehnke, Ms. Spiers’s eldest grand- child, who was on hand at the Pickering Pub- lic Library on April 2 for an event celebrating the collection. “This is very exciting for our family to see the community have the chance to look closely at much of the artwork that beguiled me as a child,” she continued. “As I walk along I can see and remember where all the paintings hung in her home.” The collection includes Ms. Speirs’s own works as well as paintings and sketches from the Group of Seven and other notable Canadian artists. Such peo- ple often say they were “just doing their job,” minimizing with humility their often heroic acts. That’s what Durham Police Constable Rob Sottile said to us when we asked him about last week’s fire in Pickering. On March 25, he and Const. Matt Roy arrived at a burning house around 1 a.m., seconds after Pickering Fire Services. Job one was to ensure there was nobody in the dwell- ing. When a basement tenant responded to his door pounding and told Const. Sot- tile two other occupants of the house were asleep upstairs, the officers didn’t hesitate: they entered the hot, smoky and burning house, woke up the residents and got them out. “It’s a spur of the moment thing, if you know someone is inside you’re going to go get them,” Const. Sottile told us. He says on four or five occasions he’s done likewise, helping to evacuate people from burning buildings. “It wasn’t much of a big deal for us, we don’t really think about it.” We do. We think how the officers’ first instinct was to put their lives on the line for complete strangers. We understand that first responders are men and women with husbands and wives and children, loved ones who count on them finishing their shifts and returning home. Yet these considerations are put aside when they encounter a dangerous situation and the focus is on helping others who are in trou- ble. Soldiers recognize that their government could at any time put them in harm’s way and must be prepared to deal with their fear and do their jobs. And it’s the same for cops, firefighters and others: a shift could be uneventful, a speeding ticket or two and, for firefighters, a call that sounds bad but turns out to be burnt toast. But in a moment they could be called to a major blaze, a tense domes- tic situation, possibly involving a weapon, or others where their personal safety is in doubt. Yes, it’s their job. But what an extraordi- narily selfless job they have and do. Many of us have jobs that make us tense, make us grumble and complain. But rare- ly does our work put us in a life-threaten- ing situation. It takes a special person to put on a first- responders’ uniform, to accept that facing danger is a part of the job. And we should thank them for their heroic efforts whenever the opportunity arises. Stand up, offer help when it is required To the editor: I recently observed a male teenager was verbally assaulting his girlfriend. I went over to see if the girl was all right. Her boy- friend continued to yell at her, and at me, validating his behaviour by saying he didn’t touch her (which also raises alarm bells). I told her she didn’t have to take any abuse from him. However, even as a grown woman I felt completely ineffective when facing the anger of this male teen. If a young person is demonstrating that much rage in the middle of the street, other par- ents and/or teachers must notice it and there needs to be an intervention. I know I didn’t say or do the right things during the altercation, and I had to walk away to return to my child, so I just hope this mes- sage somehow reaches that young, beauti- ful girl: get out. I did see them part ways but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the story. Let’s all keep an eye out for these kids, and others like them, and offer some help. T.J. Russell Whitby Special interests trump learning opportunity To the editor: Re: ‘Durham gay community opposes Oshawa broadcast event’, news, durhamre- gion.com, March 15, 2013. I am saddened and appalled again that special interest groups will oppress and prevent educational opportunities to our future leaders. They have taken a stand against a corpo- ration that, because it has a Christian base, no one should be allowed to participate in the annual one-day Leadercast that Chic- fil-A sponsors. I have been to these leadership seminars. This one-day event brings in speakers from all fields that have excelled in their profes- sions, such as sport figures, business lead- ers, motivational speakers and many who started life in poverty but worked hard and developed into respected citizens of soci- ety. t no time in any of these events did I hear any anti-gay comments, or comments about same-sex marriage. It appears that PFLAG is twisting the truth. It has been said that in telling a lie enough, the public will soon accept it as truth. Chic-fil-A, an American fast food com- pany, has given over $68 million to several educational and charitable organizations and has provided millions of dollars in food donations to the needy. This is a company that does not grow on corporate greed but on the basis of giving opportunities to the less fortunate and reaching out to expand the minds of youth in leadership for tomor- row. I wonder what else PFLAG will prevent people from doing or buying. Still, tax rules do vary from province to province and it’s good to know the differences, if only for your own personal knowledge and perhaps, to save you a few impor- tant dollars. The federal government provides refundable and non-refundable tax credits that are the identical in every province. However, each province provides its own roster of tax credits that often mirror or extend those provided by the federal government, but vary from province to province. Here are a few notable examples. British Columbia: Seniors Home Renovation Tax Credit • Available to seniors (65 and older) or family members living with them. Up to $1,000 to offset the cost of home improve- ments – such as the addition of handrails, ramps or walk-in bathtubs – whether the home is owned or rented. Manitoba: Primary Caregiver Tax Credit • Available to primary caregivers for spouses, rela- tives, neighbours or friends. $1,275 for each care recipient; may claim for up to three care recipients for a total of $3,825 per year. Ontario: Healthy Homes Renovation Tax Credit • Available to seniors (65 and older) or family members living with them. Up to $10,000 in eligible home improvements to make the home safer and more accessible. The amount of taxes you pay and the tax credits available to you are determined by the province you live in but, no matter where you live, the principles for reducing your tax bite as much as possible are the same: Take full advantage of all your tax deduc- tions and credits, make maximum contributions to your investments held within an RRSP or TFSA, and use income-splitting and investment strategies that reduce taxes. One other tip: If you’re moving to a province with a lower tax rate, do it before Dec. 31 and you’ll pay the lower rate for the full year. If you’re moving to a province with a higher tax rate, try to delay until the following year. – from the Investors Group library du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 4 , 2 0 1 3 15 AP Pickering’sBestKeptSecret! 2010 Diamond 534 Rodd Ave., Pickering www.abbeylawnmanor.com TO BOOK YOUR TOUR AND COMPLIMENTARY LUNCH CALL 905-509-2582 OnlyashortwalkfromtheNorthshoreofLakeOntario,OnlyashortwalkfromtheNorthshoreofLakeOntario, AbbeylawnManorAbbeylawnManor isaHiddenGem!isaHiddenGem! Musicians hit the right notes in Durham Region There’s such an exciting music scene hap- pening in Durham Region right now. I’ve always felt a strong connection to local bands and venues that bring in great acts. In fact, I used to produce a local Bandwarz contest that ran for 19 years. The contest showcased local bands, many of which have gone on to build big careers on the world stage. Recently I asked my friends on Facebook what was their favourite local band, and so many bands were named it was amazing. If you enjoy original music, want to sup- port local artists and venues, and are eager to meet other music-lovers, it’s time to join in the local music scene. Here are a few upcom- ing gigs to help you feel the local rhythm. On April 12, Patrick Dune, a singer, songwriter and producer originally from Pickering, will be playing the Regent The- atre. As an exciting addition, Dune will be playing with former member of the Guess Who, Dale Russell. The show will be filmed for a new concert series as well. Maybe you will hear your applause in the final cut. Visit http://tickets.regenttheatre.ca for tickets. Also coming up this spring, The Stellas are booked into Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility on May 24 with special guest Patrick Dorie. Marylynne and Brad Stella, who are originally from Durham Region, are mar- ried and have been playing together for 16 years. Some of you may have been following the skyrocketing success of their daughters Lennon and Maisy, who are part of the cast of the T.V. show Nashville on ABC. It’s nice to see talented bands like The Stellas and their daughters do so well. There are also great acts being produced by the folks at Music by the Bay Live, which hosts intimate blues concerts upstairs at The Waterfront Bistro in Pickering. They are put- ting on a very special show on April 12 at the Pickering Recreation Complex that you don’t want to miss. Juno nominee and Maple Award winner Steve Strongman will be head- lining a concert in support of the sixth annu- al Music By The Bay Festival, which is com- ing up July 1 and is still accepting submis- sions. This is Canada’s only festival for musi- cians under 21, which is a fantastic opportu- nity for young bands. Find out more on their website: http://musicbythebaylive.com And as many of you will know, Ziggy Pop Thursdays happens at Murphy’s Pub and Grill in downtown Oshawa. This rock series is put together by local music promoter Will McGuirk, who you can often read in these pages writing about local arts and culture. Join him on Facebook to see who is com- ing up next: http://www.facebook.com/Zig- gyThursdaysAtMurphysPub. Which local bands and venues quench your thirst for fabulous music? The virus is transmitted between cats through bite wounds that may occur during fighting. Casual contact with an infected cat is unlikely to cause infection (grooming, shar- ing food bowls…etc). FIV is diagnosed through a blood screening test. Although there is no cure for the disease, lifestyle changes & preventative healthcare can help prolong a healthy life. Most cats survive several years after diagnosis or before showing any signs. It is important to keep an infected cat indoors only, ensure that they are up to date on vaccines, fecal testing, have regular de-worming & wellness blood work as well as proper nutrition. It is recommended that all cats & kittens be tested for FIV, especially if their background is unknown. Ask the Vet: What is FIV? Sabrina byrneS / Metroland Waterfowl ducking into Durham at this time of year Of all the migrating birds I’ve heard about this week, Mary Lund’s report of a canvas- back duck in Whitby’s Cranberry Marsh was a highlight for me. Male canvasbacks are particularly handsome, with their cin- namon head and white body. I didn’t see a single canvasback all last year, partly because of their declining numbers, and partly because I wasn’t out looking in the right places during the short window of spring when they’re moving through. Unlike songbirds, which are often held up by inclement weather, waterfowl time their advancement north for the moment that ice goes out of the waterways they nest in. Hooded mergansers, which breed through- out Ontario’s woodland streams and back- waters, were spotted throughout Durham Region three weeks ago, for example. Loons have to wait for ice to leave big lakes, so fol- low a month behind. Canvasbacks, big diving ducks, are head- ing to prairie ponds, potholes and marsh- es, and recent wintry conditions through- out Manitoba and Saskatchewan due to an anomaly in the jet stream haven’t yet made for a warm welcome there. There were a handful of other intriguing ducks in Cranberry Marsh when Mary and her husband Ken dropped in on the Eas- ter weekend. Residents of north Toronto, the Lunds often come birding in Durham Region in spring, enjoying the marshes and woods where countless migrating birds rest and shelter. They saw green-winged teal, another early migrant, the rufous head of the males streaked with emerald-green satin. Big-billed northern shovelers were floating about, their cinnamon sides reflect- ed in the clear waters. A lot of ring-necked ducks and one or two elegant northern pin- tails added interest and variety. No blue-winged teal yet, males with a white crescent moon on their faces, nor ruddy ducks, with their blue bills and tipped-up tails; they come a bit later. But enough incentive for me to grab my binoc- ulars and swing by Cranberry Marsh, at the foot of Halls Road in Whitby, the very first chance I get. Every day now waterfowl numbers and compositions change as ducks and grebes move through. I’ve seen great flocks of long-tailed ducks out in Lake Ontario, div- ing deep for zebra mussels, and more and more red-breasted mergansers, which stage in large numbers in bays along shore. Every harbour from Pickering to Newcastle is worth visiting, to see what beautiful spring-plumage ducks may be resting there. Bowmanville Marsh, Second Marsh, Pumphouse Marsh, Corner Marsh, Frenchman’s Bay -- Durham’s southern coastline has a number of rewarding view- ing spots. To the north, the causeway at the south end of Lake Scugog is always interesting, as are bridges over the Nonquon River north of Port Perry. And check out every pond and flooded field large enough for a migrat- ing duck to drop into. Durham outdoors writer Margaret Carney has more than 3,000 species on her life list of birds, seen in far-flung corners of the planet. Margaret Carney Out Walking New program to fix Durham pets DURHAM -- I’m so pleased that a local charity has decided to take action now, while keeping its ultimate goal of open- ing up a low-cost spay and neuter clinic in Durham. We see too many pets being euthanized due to pet overpopulation and overcrowd- ing in shelters, and the best way to avoid this is by neutering or spaying our pets. Cats and dogs have multiple kittens or puppies in a litter, so you can imagine how many unwanted pets that leads to over a short period of time once these baby ani- mals start having litters of their own and so on. These pets often have nowhere to go and end up fighting to survive on the streets, or many times, are put to death due to over- crowding in shelters. If everyone got their pet spayed or neu- tered, this wouldn’t be a problem. But the procedure can be quite pric- ey, and not everyone can afford to have it done. So Spay Neuter Durham is taking some small steps toward fixing this big problem with its new program, Sheba’s Fix, which will reimburse the cost of spay or neuter procedures for cats and dogs. This registered non-profit charity has been working toward opening up a low- cost, high-volume spay and neuter clin- ic in Durham. But the volunteers want to start helping animals now. “We are working toward this all-time goal, but right now there’s a need,” says Annetta Wange, co-ordinator of Sheba’s Fix. “Instead of just waiting, right now we’re taking action.” The program is initially offering support to local rescue organizations by reimburs- ing the cost of a spay or neuter procedure for cats and dogs. Missy from Homeward Bound Rescue and Mercedes from Forgotten Ones Cat Rescue are the first to benefit from this new program. Missy was a stray pug mix who was found in Whitby and is scheduled for surgery on April 5. Mercedes was dumped off at a farm, pregnant. She delivered six kittens, but one didn’t survive. Mercedes will be spayed after her kittens are weaned. Within a few months, assistance will also be available to local residents for the spay- ing or neutering of their family pets. Reim- bursement conditions apply, so visit she- basfix.ca for details regarding the applica- tion process. Those interested in using Sheba’s Fix must e-mail annetta@shebasfix.ca or call 905-728-6943 in advance of getting the procedure done if they wish to be reim- bursed. This program will be a great success, but it needs the help of local residents. Check out shebasfix.ca to learn more about it, and how you can sponsor a pet to get fixed. All Pet Valu stores across Canada are host- ing a fundraising and adoption month dur- ing April. All together, stores hope to raise $800,000 for local animal rescues. Custom- ers are asked to buy a paw to be displayed on the front windows of the store. All the money raised in Durham will stay in Durham. To be honest with you, I don’t know how it all happened.” Answering her own question, Baker says she developed a big fan following, aided by radio and newspapers in the days before Facebook and Twitter. “That kind of publicity, you really can’t buy it,” she says. Baker presents Thanks for the Memories, a retrospective of her career, at Oshawa's Regent Theatre on April 26. She’s no stranger to Durham, noting it was an Oshawa sculptor and songwriter, George Petralia, who discovered her sing- ing at the Hayloft Jamboree on Hwy. 48 near Markham. He took Baker to Thunder Bay to make a record, where she met pro- ducer and songwriter Don Grashey. It was Petralia who wrote her first single, Mem- ries of Home, in 1970. Baker’s memories of Durham are strong, including Jim’s Stage Door at the Whitby Hotel, where she used to enjoy singing. “It was a little bar and it was so unique because the stage was directly behind the bar,” she notes. Singing there once, she noticed a guy and went down to speak with him. He told her he played guitar but “booze got in the way,” adding, “one drink’s one too many and a thousand not enough.” Baker says she later went up to her hotel room and wrote One Is One Too Many (And A Thousand Not Enough) in about 10 minutes. It was one of those magic moments, she says, when the songwriter seems aided by a higher power. Her first record was played on CHOO Radio in Ajax. “It was a major country radio station at one time,” Baker says. “They used to broad- cast a country music jamboree live from the Hayloft.” Baker in concert could dazzle a crowd who didn't know her or her music very well. Like at the Junos, when she remembers that only she and a rock band performed live (i.e. not lip-synching). “It was magic,” she recalls. “Because I think my performance was more than any- body expected, I received such a response from the audience.” The same thing happened in London, England, when she was given a half-hour slot at a country show featuring big-name American performers. The crowd of 30,000- plus people went crazy, and Baker says the next day the papers were raving about a Canadian singer who stole the show. She is a five-time winner of the Juno Award for Country Female Vocalist of the Year and was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992. A Nova Scotia native who lives in Guelph, Baker says her current show is for her fans. “I was one day thinking, ‘I’d like to do something so special for my fans’,” she says. “I always like to thank my fans. I’m not dumb enough to think I did this all on my own.” OSHAWA -- Canadian country music legend Carroll Baker plays Oshawa’s Regent Theatre on April 26. Katie Gaskin got the opportunity to stand at centre ice and hoist an NCAA national championship trophy, but it wasn’t with the school she had visions of doing it with when she left Pine Ridge Secondary School to begin her university studies. Instead of Wayne State in Michigan, where she accepted a full scholarship, the national title came with the Division-III Elmira College Soaring Eagles after beat- ing Middlebury College 1-0 in the cham- pionship game held in Wisconsin. “It was incredible. I felt so proud of my team,” says Gaskin, a co-captain, of the experience while speaking on the phone between classes. “It was just overwhelm- ing the amount of pride I had to be a member of that team. I was just so happy I could be a part of it. “I remember after we took the picture holding the trophy, we turned to the team and just started screaming. It was amaz- ing to be part of a team like that.” The feeling was much different than the one the Pickering resident experienced after receiving an e-mail from the head coach of the hockey program at Wayne State. After earning a scholarship based on her play with the Durham West Light- ning, Gaskin spent her freshman season as a member of the Warriors hockey team. But an e-mail changed everything. “All he said was, ‘I’m sorry ladies, the program has been cut. We’re not going to have a team next year’ and that was it. “I had no idea it was coming. It came out of nowhere. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know if I’d be going to a new school or where I would be going. I was stuck with what I was going to do.” Wayne State informed the players that the school would still honour the schol- arships, but Gaskin wanted to combine academics with athletics and play hock- ey. With the support of her family, she contacted some schools, but the answers were all the same, that the rosters were full, but if she wanted to sit out a year, they could find a spot for her. Elmira was different. They still had a spot to fill on the blue-line, and offered it to the defenceman. After a strong season as a sophomore, she was named a co-captain for her junior season. With the motto ‘Believe until the end’, the team bonded through the sum- mer and built on that relationship as the season unfolded. A 4-0 shutout over Bow- doin College in the NCAA tournament quarter-finals, followed by an overtime win of 4-3 over previously undefeated Gustavus Adolphus College in the semis put Elmira in the championship game. The 20 year old, who turns 21 April 6, is studying biology in hopes of becoming a physiotherapist down the road. When she wraps up her studies in the spring, Gaskin plans on coming home for the summer in early June. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 4 , 2 0 1 3 26 AP Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor / bkelly@durhamregion.com / 905-579-4400 #2254 Erin Weston also part of Elmira team ELMIRA, NEW YORK -- Erin Weston of Ajax had reason to celebrate recently when the Elmira College Soaring Eagles women’s hockey team captured the NCAA Division-III National Championship. Weston is a sophomore business major at the upstate New York school. She buried a first period shot and was credited with the game winner in a 4-0 quarter-final victory over Bowdoin College at a game played in Maine, earning a trip to Wisconsin for the Frozen Four. A 1-0 overtime victory over previously undefeated Gustavus Adolphus College from Minnesota put Elmira into the cham- pionship game against Middlebury Col- lege from Vermont. In two previous games, Elmira had lost twice to Middlebury. In the second period Weston drove hard to the net and distracted the goaltender just enough for Taylor Steadman to score the game’s only goal and the Soaring Eagles held on for a 1-0 win to claim the school’s third national title and first since 2003. This was Weston’s second national championship game, having previously played in the Canadian midget champi- onship in Calgary with the Scarborough Sharks. Despite losing that game, Weston was named MVP of the contest. Following that season she spent two years with the Etobicoke Dolphins of the Provincial Wom- en’s Hockey League before being recruited by Elmira College. This season, Weston appeared in 29 games, posting 7-6-13 point totals, besting the 6-3-9 numbers she had in 24 games as a freshman.
