Dan Hoornweg, an associate professor at UOIT, says lots of little things are needed to ensure there’s a continued supply of clean drinking water. All those impermeable surfaces could be adding to a problem -- over-burdened storm water management sys- tems are unable to handle the flood of water following a major rainfall. “All the impermeable surfaces in cities create the ideal condition for excess water to overwhelm our already strained municipal storm water systems,” said Bob Sand- ford, chairman of Canadian Partnership Initiative of the UN Water for Life Decade. “Municipalities, property devel- opers and homeowners must work together to better man- age storm water.” See DURHAM Page 10 du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 2 1 , 2 0 1 3 2 AP FREE CLASP BRACELET WITH PURCHASE AVAILABLE MARCH 21–24* Sterling silver charms from $30 Free Gift with Purchase March 21–24 Receive a sterling silver PA NDORA clasp bracelet (a $75 CAD retail value) with your PA NDORA purchase of $150 or more.* *Before taxes. Since he’s faced allegations and charges under the Act in regard to the last munici- pal election, his attempts to deflect blame from himself are not very reassuring to his constituents and all Pickering residents. The courts will now decide if he is guilty of five offences he’s charged with under the Act. The stakes are high: Coun. Dickerson could be booted off council. Councillor Dickerson is charged with failing to value contributions of goods and services, filing an incorrect financial state- ment, using his account for purposes other than the 2010 election campaign, exceed- ing the spending limit and accepting inval- id campaign contributions. While he wouldn’t speak to us recently, he has in the past. "It's a theatre of the absurd," he said last month, pointing to flaws in the Municipal Act, which he says he misinterpreted. The echoes to the conflict-of-interest case Toronto Mayor Rob Ford faced over donations to his football foundation are strong. When the issue came before Toron- to council, Mayor Ford not only spoke to it but took part in the council vote. It was a clear conflict, one most rookie councillors would recognize. Yet Mayor Ford argued he wasn't trying to bilk anybody, but was doing it for the kids. Perhaps, but he still made glaring mistakes he shouldn't have made. Councillor Dickerson is railing against the Province and the Municipal Act. What about his own responsibility as a council- lor? If he had any doubts he should have checked and cleared up any ambiguities. Heck, he could have contacted the Prov- ince directly and cleared them up. Appar- ently he did neither. The point isn't that the Act may be flawed, but that Coun. Dickerson didn't understand it and didn't seek to. It was his responsibility to do so, for himself and for the people he represents. Councillor Dickerson's defence, like Mayor Ford's, revealed a man who just didn’t get it, who perhaps stubbornly refused to get it. It's like a driver pulled over for speed- ing arguing with the police officer that the speed limit on that stretch of road should be higher. Maybe, but it's not. Councillor Dickerson at a June 2012 meeting said to the City's Compliance Audit Committee, "I continue to express my innocence in all these matters." These matters have dragged out long enough, and whatever the outcome, the community deserves a resolution to the “theatre of the absurd”. More of Pickering’s history destroyed, no comment from MP To the editor: Re: The destruction of Brophy House on the Pickering federal lands. I just did a quick search of durhamregion. com looking for comments made by our local MP Chris Alexander on the pending and actual destruction of up to 40 homes on lands owned by the federal govern- ment. I couldn’t find any. Why is that? I would think that the preservation of Pick- ering’s history would be up there on the list of things to be concerned about by our gov- ernments. Pickering Councillor Peter Rodrigues has been quite vocal in his dismay but nothing from Mr. Alexander, who has charge of this piece of Pickering. Brophy House, one of our most beautiful and historically signifi- cant homes, was just destroyed last week and nothing. Not a peep. Perhaps Mr. Alex- ander should hold some open town hall type meetings during the evening hours as our previous representative did, so he can listen to what matters to his constituents most and answer questions on his govern- ment’s position on current events. I would gladly attend to let Mr. Alexander know how I feel about (his government’s) handling of current issues, locally and nationally. Sharon Powell Ajax A shame Durham Leadercast event was shut down To the editor: Re: ‘Show won’t go on’, news, durhamre- gion.com, Friday, March 15. Regardless of your stance on gay mar- riage, it is a shame that JCI Durham presi- dent Ryan Smith allowed himself to be bla- tantly bullied by PFLAG’s Jayme Harper and the gay community. Aside from the obvious, robbing UOIT students of a remarkable opportunity, the message this is sending is we are not allowed to voice our opinions on matters that should be open for discussion. This ‘Leadercast’ featuring world- renowned business leaders has absolutely nothing to do with gays, gay marriage, or anything of the sort. But, because it has the Chic-fil-A name attached, it is being shut down because the gay community says so? Chic-fil-A, by the way, neither con- demned nor discriminated against gays, but apparently there is only one public- ly acceptable answer on the gay marriage issue -- so much for fostering an open- minded society. After reading your article, it seems Sue McGovern of UOIT is the only one of the three who has any real grasp on fairness and objectivity. Dan Hoornweg, an associate professor and the Jeffrey S. Boyce Research Chair at the University of Ontario Institute of Technolo- gy, said paved driveways or roofs cause run- away water. “Storm water is as much an issue and trying to manage it,” Mr. Hoornweg said. “Lots of little things” are needed to ensure there’s safe, clean drinking water, he said. “Outside my window is a beautiful example of a retention pond. It’s very well designed and a fairly attractive piece of the universi- ty. It’s very important because it holds storm water and discharges it more slowly. The more you have in a community, the better,” he added. John Presta, the director of environmen- tal services for Durham Region, said storm water ponds are part of all new develop- ments. “Developers are trying to incorporate more greening aspects,” he noted, adding that urban sprawl isn’t the only cause of poor water quality. “We know from other water studies that areas that aren’t developed, large amounts of water is running off fields. That water is just runoff, but it impacts water,” Mr. Presta said. “One person born, there’s an impact on the planet,” he said. “Municipalities are paying more attention to that now. In the 1970s and 80s, there wasn’t a lot of thought.” Mr. Hoornweg said, “Anything you can do to stop a big flush of water after a storm is great.” Storm water contains “a lot of sediment. It’s stirred up dirt and silt,” he added. “A pond will hold the water a little while. The faster the water moves, the more crud it holds up,” he said. Water running down pavement will also pick up fluids leaking from vehicles, he noted. As Mr. Sandford said, “Canadians continue to have a love affair with paved driveways, and there’s a serious trickle-down effect. With impermeable sidewalks, roadways and parking lots added to the mix, we’ve actually created the ideal condition for excess water to overwhelm our already strained munici- pal water and storm water systems.” Mr. Hoornweg noted if people know an activity has a negative impact on their envi- ronment, they’ll stop doing it. He pointed to yellow fish being painted near sewers and catchbasins, reminding people not to pour DURHAM from page 1 Durham must work with homeowners to better manage storm water used motor oil there. “Slowly, people generally do the right thing, if they know what the right thing is and they can do it eas- ily. What’s the trade-off people are willing to agree to?” du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 2 1 , 2 0 1 3 11 AP LIVE WELL... STAY WELL... BE INSPIRED... Key to vitality is staying in life’s race Kids come in very handy sometimes. For starters they’re an excellent excuse to always have cookies, ice cream and sugary cereals in the house. It’s not for me, it’s the boys ...they love the stuff. They’re also a fantastic smoke screen for goofing off. I did not waste a day playing video games in the basement with the kids, I was supervising content. Even though they are both young adults now, my children are and always have been a kind of precious and magical youth tonic for me. At every stage of their wonderful lives they have freely rekindled my imagina- tion and my senses of play and wonder. They do this effortlessly. It is like breathing to them. When they are very little they are virtually incendiary with life energy. I well remember shuffling into my boys’ rooms when they were scarcely more than a year old and finding them, as early as 5 or 6 in the morning, standing in their cribs, fully awake and beaming at me, completely delighted with being alive. Things change as they grow older, of course. Nowadays it’s more likely they’re com- ing into the house at five or six in the morning. Still beaming, mind you, just in a slightly different way. But that wonderful life force is still there, that vitality, that energy. And they’ll happily share it. All that is required is a little time spent. Attend to your kids, play with them, engage them in discussion, ask them about what they’re listening to, reading, watching. At 52 I’m discovering an interesting truth. On the racetrack of life, my kids are about to lap me. And that’s OK. In fact, I believe it’s natural and right. I took the baton from my parents somewhere in my late teens or early 20s and eagerly raced past them, just as mine are about to fly by me. Each generation should out- pace its predecessor. The trick, however, is to stay in the race even when they’ve passed you. Keep running, stay on the track. Because every time that kid zips by, he or she will have an armload of interesting stuff to share. Stuff that will jazz you and energize you and slow down that aging process a little bit. Stuff that will keep you current and plugged in and, incidentally, alive. My kids taunt me mercilessly about the abhor- rent lack of breadth and depth on my iPod. Admittedly, a brief glance at my song collection would convince you that I had thought the music industry had ceased to exist after 1979. And while it’s important to know what you like, an open mind will do wonders for your health. So, as I say, it’s handy to have these kids in my life. Their ribbing and badgering, sighing and rolling of eyes are all welcomed nudges back into the race, the stream of life. I was working at the computer, in silence, the other morning when my youngest son walked in and said, simply, “You want to hear something really beautiful?” A couple of clicks on his computer and we were listen- ing to a song that was absolutely breathtaking. To reflect a 1.2-per cent increase agreed upon by the college and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT has a similar protocol in place), all ancillary costs except for health plan, dental plan, student association, student centre and copyright fees, will go up by a total of $13.08. This includes the U-Pass transit fee that will go up by $7 as proposed by Durham Region Transit. The board of governors approved the increase on March 13. Durham College to offer degrees DURHAM -- Durham College plans to offer bachelor degree programs in the next couple years. The board of governors received at its March 13 meeting an update on the college’s work to implement the new programs in September 2015. A bachelor of psychology – behavioural management and a bachelor of health- care - technology management are currently being developed, and the col- lege has further plans to offer a bach- elor of clinical research management and a bachelor of paralegal studies. Durham College was told in 2010 by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities it is eligible to offer nine different degree programs. The team working on the develop- ment hopes to receive board approval this November, before seeking final approval from the ministry. Durham College passes strategic plan DURHAM -- The Durham College Board of Governors has approved its 2013-2016 strategic plan. Featuring input from 300 people, it builds on Durham College’s roots as a community-builder and capitalizes on the momentum of the past five years. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology is referenced as a key partner in three of the college’s strate- gies. All colleges are required to submit strategic plans to the Province. The college is now designing the plan for publication, and it will be avail- able to the public. Written by Dr.Melanie Dell Visit:www.pethealthnetwork.com Out Walking Margaret Carney Nature comes alive with sounds of spring We were heading out for a walk the other day, my husband and I, when we both stopped in our tracks and said, “Listen.” A musical little song was coming from the hawthorn hedge, high-pitched and tinkling. I held my breath so I could hear every note of this precious sound of spring: a tree sparrow singing. All winter we’ve had two dozen of these rusty-capped winter visitors from the tundra feeding on seeds we spread under our lilacs. By late April they’ll be long gone, heading back north to nest. Their parting gift is that they start singing before they take off, giving us a brief taste of what we might hear if we could only get to the Arctic in June. Would that we could. There’s another sound of spring I relish just as much: the sweet warble of fox spar- rows, which move through in April, en route to brushy clearings in the boreal forest. For a few short weeks in early spring it’s pos- sible to hear their lovely little song, if you’re lucky enough to be in the right woods on a still morning. Another reason to keep quiet and listen every time you step out the door. There are plenty of other sounds of spring to take note of these days. Gulls screaming at one another, for example. Silent all winter, they’re now making up for lost time. Canada geese have a more urgent note in their honking as they fly about in pairs, checking out ponds and wetlands for nesting sites. Crow families are back, caw- ing as they tussle over territories and rau- cously mob roosting owls. Returning red-winged blackbirds add their own hoarse, raspy voices to the mix, from every cattail marsh and grassy road- side. I thought I heard one clucking from the top of a willow when I was out for a walk the other day. It turned out to be a com- mon grackle, which produce a whole raft of harsh, unmusical notes as they gurgle to each other. Woodpeckers have started drumming, males hammering with their beaks on hol- low limbs to amplify the echo. Black-capped chickadees have been singing “spring’s here” for weeks. Already I’m so used to hearing cardinals and song sparrows I’m practically tuning them out. One “background” song of early spring carries so well I can hear it from inside the house: the low cooing of mourn- ing doves. During the next warm spell Durham woods should be filled with migrating flocks of golden-crowned kinglets and brown creepers, whispering to each other in lispy voices. Shortly after that ruby-crowned king- lets and winter wrens will arrive, the tiniest birds with the longest, most insistent songs. The dry trill of juncos, audible now, will be replaced by that of arriving chipping sparrows, as these wintering visitors disap- pear north again. Some of it is scary, as they’re regular household items. The Humane Society of Canada has been sharing this information on its Facebook page, and I’ve also done some searching around. I came across some interesting stuff from the American Society for the Pre- vention of Cruelty to Animals. I’m all for Canadian organizations, but sometimes I refer to the ASPCA because it has great resources. I know that lilies are poisonous to cats. This is important to note as Easter is around the corner and it tends to be a popular flower brought into the home. And this is yet another reason to keep cats indoors. As gardening season is about to begin, lilies are a popular choice. Please spread this around. I know many people aren’t aware of this, and the times I’ve heard of mysterious cat deaths, poison from this pretty but evil flower always comes to mind. Here’s a list of the top poison-related cases the Animal Poison Control Center in Urbana, Illinois dealt with in 2012. 1. Prescription human medications - 25,000 cases The top three types of medications that animals were exposed to are: heart med- ications, antidepressants and pain medi- cations. Many of these exposures were due to people dropping their medication when preparing to take it, and before they knew it, their pooch had gobbled the pill off the floor. 2. Insecticides - 11 per cent of calls More than 50 per cent of the calls to the APCC involving cats pertain to felines exposed to insecticides. Always read the label before using any insecticide on your pet, in your home or in your yard. 3. Over-the-counter human medica- tions - more than 18,000 cases This group contains acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen as well as herb- al and nutraceutical products (fish oil, joint supplements). Many of these prod- ucts are tasty to pets, and also life-threat- ening. 4. Veterinary products and medica- tions - six per cent of calls Both over-the-counter and prescrip- tion veterinary products are included in this group. Flavoured tablets make it easy to give your pet pain or joint medication, but it’s also more likely they’ll ingest the entire bottle if given the chance. 5. Household products - 10,000 calls Household toxins can range from fire logs to cleaning products. Some items can be corrosive, while other can cause obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract, requiring surgical intervention. The other five are human food, choc- olate, plants, rodenticides and lawn and garden products. To learn about these, including how grapes, raisins and onions are danger- ous for your pet, visit blog.aspca.org/ tags/poison-control. There you can also learn about a live chat on Twitter with an ASPCA poison control specialist coming up on Wednesday, March 27 at 2 p.m. If you fear your pet has ingested some- thing poisonous call 1-888-426-4435. The popular coach and head of the spe- cial education department died March 18 after suffering a heart attack. He is remembered by his colleagues as an out- standing teacher, mentor and coach. “Cyril really epitomized the attributes of an outstanding teacher,” said Phil Matsushita, principal of Pickering High School. “He was always there for his students and a large advocate for students, always ensuring their needs were being met.” Mr. Sahadath, who was born in Trini- dad and Tobago and moved to Canada at the age of seven, had been teaching at Pickering High for 25 years. As head coach of the school’s track and field program he guided the team to a record 13 provincial championships. “He is definitely leaving behind a leg- acy; he is the only coach to ever accom- plish that feat,” Mr. Matsushita said, not- ing Mr. Sahadath’s vast experience at the school had made him an “icon” among staff and students. “It’s going to be difficult for anyone to keep what he did going, it will be man- aged but he will be sorely missed not only by staff and students, but by the community as well,” he continued. “Those are very large shoes to fill. Many teachers should emulate his char- acter, especially when it came to putting students first and being an advocate.” In addition to 23 provincial champi- onship titles, the school’s track and field program also boasts 69 Durham Region championships, 11 Canadian champion students and 18 students who have won scholarships to continue their training at American universities. In the wake of the loss, the school com- munity and wider community are griev- ing Mr. Sahadath’s sudden death. “He was in excellent health,” Mr. Mat- sushita said. “Anytime anybody passes away every- one is deeply saddened, but when it’s so sudden like this it really magnifies the tragedy of the situation. Our condolences go out to all Cyril’s family and friends.” FREE INITIAL CONSULTAT ION Chartered Accountant Chartered Accountant With 13 years of experience in public accounting PHONE:905-239-9973 www.annaarmata.com •EMAIL:aarmata-ca@rogers.com • Assurance • Accounting •Ta x • Consulting • Bookkeeping BComm, CPA,CA AnnaArmata AJAX -- Pickering High School’s track and field coach and teacher Cyril Sahadath passed away suddenly on March 18. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 2 1 , 2 0 1 3 16 AP If Yo u Are... N. (at Rossland Road), Oshawa. The doors open at 6 p.m. Everyone is wel- come and there’s no admission charge. Jason Liebregts / MetroLand Kid Hawk Q&A MeLanie Jacob mjacob@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- It’s no surprise that Robin “Kid Hawk” Hawkins is following in his daddy’s footsteps. Born on Christmas Eve in 1964, Rockin’ Robin is the middle child of music leg- end Ronnie “The Hawk” Hawkins. Kid Hawk began performing at the age of 14 and by age 16 he was touring with his father. His current band is Tattoo Love Child, whose members include Shai Bailey and James McCann. How difficult was it for you to move out from under your dad’s shadow? People expected me to live up to his leg- endary status, like all kids of musicians and actors ... you just have to be yourself. You’ve got to have contentment to live with your circumstances, with who you are. How do you prepare for a gig? Biggest thing is mentally, even with play- ing. I also run for a bit, I jog ... Got to be relaxed and not tired. Then I go for a little nap-nap and that really helps a lot. When you were in Grade 9, you were in a car wreck. What was that like for you? I was thrown out of the car, I’m actual- ly lucky to be alive. I got banged around and got some cuts. I wasn’t mentally all there. I think it was a concussion-type thing. After about three months, I was still kind of messed up. My dad was wor- ried and so he told me to go on tour with him, and I did and that’s how I ended up pursuing it. Did you raise your children in the same musical tradition? No. I don’t encourage them at all. It’s a terrible business ... I don’t recommend it at all. It’s a never-ending stream of bull... No one’s buying CDs anymore. It’s basi- cally online robbery ... Then again, the Internet has been really good for musi- cians and helping them get their names out. Where do you see yourself 15 years from now? I want to be playing music in festivals and in theatres, going to Europe ... I want to go to new places and meet new peo- ple. I want to play all over the place. Even when I’m older, I’ll still keep plugging. The Durham Philharmonic Choir’s annual Good Friday concert is Magnificent Mozart, an all-Mozart program including some of his most famous works. Headlining the concert is the well-known Requiem and other selections include Exultate, Jubilate, Ave Verum and Laudate Dominum. The soprano soloist is Toronto’s Marion Samuel-Stevens, who has performed in the past in Durham as a DPC soloist. “Our Mozart concerts always draw well due in part to a general familiarity and appre- ciation of Mozart’s music -- particularly the Requiem, and the wonderful acoustics and ambience of St. George’s Anglican Church on a Good Friday,” says conductor Robert Phil- lips. “The dramatic power of the music through the combined forces of the choir, orchestra and soloists provides a memorable aural and visual experience for the audience.” The choir is celebrating 20 years of music making in Durham with special programming, soloists and guests throughout the season. Cheryl Lescom has been a part of the scene for more than 30 years, starting off as a back- ing singer for Ronnie Hawkins and Long John Baldry. After recording two indepen- dent CDs and then taking a break, Lescom appeared with a band and it was magic. “When Cheryl teamed up with The Tucson Choir Boys for an appearance at the Grape- jam Acoustic Blues Festival, the response was phenomenal,” states a press release. “After doing a few more gigs together the decision was made to start writing some original material. After a year of touring and recording, the Cheryl Lescom and The Tuc- son Choir Boys CD was released, garnering airplay on blues, pop and roots radio across Canada.” Lescom and The Tucson Choir Boys are performing upstairs at The Waterfront, 590 Liverpool Rd., on April 19 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $35, available at The Waterfront and online at www.musicbythebaylive.com. Having been eliminated each of the past two years by the St. Catharines- based team, the Generals will this time head into a best-of-seven series as the favourites. Many would say clear favourites, although Generals coach D.J. Smith wouldn’t go that far. “You can’t take anyone lightly. Yeah, I like my team and going into the playoffs I like the way we’re playing, but at the same point, there’s a lot of other coaches who like their teams, so we’re going to take it game by game and see what happens,” said Smith, who guided the Generals to a 42-22- 1-3 record in his first season behind the bench. “Two years in a row the same team sends you pack- ing, there’s a lot of pride in there,” added Smith, who expects his players to be fully motivated for the task. “But at the same time they’re the defending Eastern Confer- ence champions and you have to respect that.” The IceDogs are a mere shadow of the team from a year ago, although in centre Ryan Strome and winger Brett Ritchie, they still have two of the top forwards in the league. Strome, the team’s captain, was sixth in points with 94, while Ritchie was sixth in goals with 41, both in just 53 games. Among the many players they have lost, however, are goalie Mark Visentin and defenceman Dou- gie Hamilton, who started the season with the IceDogs but ended up with the Boston Bruins once the NHL lockout ended. Hamilton’s impact is obvious given the IceDogs’ record was 19-11-1-1 before he left and 11-23-1-1 after. “They have two world juniors, high-end players that can go off on any night, so we have to respect that,” Smith said in refer- ence to Strome and Ritchie, while admitting Niagara is not nearly so deep as last year. “If you don’t shut down that top line, they can offset depth in a hurry.” Oshawa is the team, this time around, with the impressive depth. After battling injuries much of the season, the Generals head into the post-season fully healthy and, as such, can ice three very good lines or, in a pinch, two loaded down with talent. Captain Boone Jenner, a teammate of Strome and Ritchie on Canada’s world junior team, is certainly eager to turn the tables on the IceDogs. After an excellent playoff in which he had four goals and 11 points in a six-game loss to Niagara, Jenner had by far his most productive season this year, with 45 goals and 82 points in 56 games. “They beat us out the last two years, so it’s something we haven’t forgotten,” Jenner said. “We’ve got the home-ice advantage so we just want to get off to a good start and take it from there.” “I’m really excited to get this going, I think everyone is,” he added. “This is what you work the whole regular season for, so it’s finally here and I’m just looking forward to getting it started and playing hard.” As always, goaltending will be key to any playoff success, and in Daniel Altshuller, it seems the Generals finally have some- one who could take them far. After stepping in and playing well as a rookie after Kevin Bailie faltered in last year’s playoffs, Alt- shuller shared the league lead with 36 wins this season. “Every little bit of experience helps, and I can go in there with a little better knowledge of what they have to offer,” Altshuller said of last year’s playoff taste. “The feeling in the room is anything is possible,” he added, when asked if a championship was within reach. “We all know if we work hard we’ll get great results, so we’ll just take it one game at a time and hopefully it’ll all work out for us.” The series begins with games in Oshawa Friday at 7 p.m. and Sun- day at 6:05 p.m. and continues next week on Tuesday and Thursday in St. Catharines. to be a charm when it comes to meet- ing the Niagara IceDogs in the OHL playoffs. Smith Let the games begin OTTAWA -- Pickering’s Jennifer Wake- field will be back for a third go-round for Canada at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship. The news was not so good for Newcastle defenceman Tara Watchorn, however, who was not among the 23 players named to the team that will be looking to defend its title April 2-9 in Ottawa. Wakefield, a 23-year-old forward, was on the Canadian team that won gold at last year’s tournament in the United States. Both Wakefield and Watchorn made their world championship debut in 2011, when Canada settled for silver in Swit- zerland, but of the two only Wakefield has made the cut since. “Given the depth of women’s hockey in Canada, it is always a challenge to select the world championship roster, and getting to our final 23 was a difficult process,” said head scout Melody David- son in a Hockey Canada press release. “We are excited about the talent level on this team and look forward to watch- ing them play in Ottawa as they strive to bring home an 11th gold medal.” PICKERING -- Jennifer Wakefield of Pickering, shown here in her university days with Boston, has been named to Canada’s women’s hockey team for the world championships again. After the first two games of the Provin- cial Women’s Hockey League playoffs, the Wolves, despite having finished first in the regular season, found themselves trail- ing 2-0 in their best-of-five opening round series with the 16th place Barrie Sharks. Meanwhile, all of the other top seeds in the league were having a relatively easy time of their first-round opponents, including the third-place Durham West Lightning, who were en route to three- game sweep over Oakville. Now, two weeks later, it’s the Wolves who are in command in the quarterfinals, lead- ing Aurora 2-0 while all three of the other series are knotted at a game apiece. After completing the necessary three- game weekend sweep of Barrie a week ear- lier, the Wolves kept the ball rolling this past weekend, winning 1-0 in overtime at home Saturday and 2-0 in Aurora Sunday. Cassidy Vinkle, who has stepped up her game these playoffs, scored the game’s only goal Saturday, 8:24 into an overtime that saw Whitby out-shoot Aurora 12-1 in the extra frame. Marissa Kozovski made 21 saves for the shutout. Captain Krista Yip-Chuck scored the win- ner on a short-handed unassisted effort Sunday, and later set up Hanna Bunton for an insurance marker. It was Hannah Bak- er’s turn for the shutout, facing 25 shots. The Lightning, meantime, stumbled out of the gate in their quarterfinal with sixth- place London, falling 3-0 Saturday at the Ajax Community Centre despite a 20-14 advantage in shots. At home again Sunday, the Lightning got first-period goals from Taylor Edwards and Stephanie Cooper and then held on for a 2-1 victory to tie the series. Jackie Roche- fort needed to make only 12 saves for the win, as Durham again dominated the shot clock, 29-13. Both series will wrap up this weekend, with Whitby hosting Game 3 at the McK- inney Centre Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Lightning travelling to London for games Friday and Saturday. If necessary, the Wolves would be in Aurora Saturday at back at the McKinney Centre at 4 p.m. Sun- day, while the Lightning would host a fifth and deciding game Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The quarterfinal winners will gather at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto March 29-31 for the championship week- end. Durham Gymnastics Academy gearing up for provincial championships MISSISSAUGA -- Athletes from Durham Gymnastics Academy attended the sec- ond provincial qualifying meet, hosted by Gymnastics Mississauga. Neil Maatta and Daniel Newth, both from Ajax, and Nicholas Novak of Pickering, competed in the Level 3, 13yrs+ category. Maatta placed second overall and won the gold medal on pommel horse as well as three silver medals on the floor exercise, rings and parallel bar events. Newth won the gold medal on high-bar, silver med- als on pommel horse and parallel bars, and placed third overall. Novak won a sil- ver medal on high-bar, a bronze medal on floor exercise and placed fifth overall. Ethan Cuenca of Brooklin and Aidan Hartley of Ajax competed in the Level 1, ages 10 -12 category. Cuenca placed sec- ond overall, and won the gold on vault, sil- ver on rings and bronze on floor exercise. Hartley had fourth place finishes on floor, vault and high-bar and also placed fourth overall. All boys have now officially qualified for the provincial championships which will be hosted by the University of Windsor in April. The Broken Chain We little knew that morning That God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly; In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone. For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, Your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. With its roots in 1950s Jamaica, ska is a genre that has undergone seemingly constant reform. You may not find a dominant ska scene in present day Jamaica,as the genre gave way to the laidback beats of rocksteady.Reggae.Bob Marley brought the Rastafarian culture to the international stage through the offbeat rhythms of reggae. His messages are some of the most imperative in music history and are still venerated in museums around the countr y.
