The fight over Seaton rages on Traffic, heritage and financing among chief concerns MOYA DILLON mdillon@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Residents of Whitevale say they are battling on behalf of all Pickering residents in their continued fight against the impacts of the proposed Seaton development. A group of residents from the north Pickering vil- lage are among the last objecting parties to the long- planned Seaton development, which will add nearly 37,000 new residents to the city’s existing population of 95,000 in its first phase. “A lot of people think we’re just trying to protect Whitevale, but we’re trying to protect Pickering,” said resident Marion Thomas, who is leading the effort. “We’re trying to get the rest of Pickering to wake up and realize this will affect them too; traffic affects everyone.” See TRAFFIC page 3 Pickering today Current population 95,000 Seaton Phase 1 + 36,992 38.9%Seaton Phase 2 + 23,627 63.8% = 1,000 people 155,000+ du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 1 4 , 2 0 1 3 3 P MON - FRI 10AM - 9PM, SAT 9:30AM - 6PM, SUN 11AM - 6PM HWY. 401 AT LIVERPOOL ROAD, PICKERING • 905.683.7171 EASTER PHOTOS Friday, March 8th - Saturday, March 30th Upper level, near Carlton Cards EASTER BUNNY HOURS Monday to Friday 11:00am to 8:00pm Saturday & Sunday 11:00am to 6:00pm pickeringtowncentre.com yadirF raM ,rutaS - ht8 hc yad raM , ht03 hc yadirF ot yadnoM 1 mp00:8 ot ma00:1 yadnuS & yadrutaS 1 mp00:6 ot ma00:1 MEET THE BUTTERFLY FAIRY Appearances with the Easter Bunny. Ms. Thomas pointed to the lack of road widen- ing for Steeles Avenue and the limited construction of a planned Whitevale bypass as issues. A bridge that would see the planned Whitevale Road bypass extend- ed over Duffins Creek has been included as part of a 15- to 20-year infrastructure forecast, rather than within phase one planning. “How can you even conceive these roads aren’t going to be affected by putting in 37,000 people?” added Lloyd Thomas, who is helping his wife with the hearings, not- ing morning traffic backs up on other area routes such as Altona Road. “A lot of them could stand to be wid- ened as is.” “If you only put in houses and sewers and ignore the roads, one of two things is going to happen,” Ms. Thom- as explained. “Either we’ll be mired in gridlock, or the people who move in will start screaming bloody murder and the Province or someone will have to come in and build those roads and bridges. The question is how long is it going to take, and who’s going to pay?” Traffic concerns are something the residents have in common with the City. Catherine Rose, acting chief planner for the City of Pickering, notes that Pickering council wanted the bridge included in an earlier phase, but ultimately the decision will be left to the Region of Durham. “We are concerned, we don’t want traffic infiltrating through Whitevale and we are asking for additional transporta- tion planning,” Ms. Rose explained. “It comes down to a question of management of traffic. There can’t be any more roads than are already planned, so the ques- tion becomes how do we manage this? There could be a number of strategies for that and the residents would be involved in any planning.” The residents have already completed a hearing on heritage issues, during which they objected to the construction of schools and parks within the designated heritage open space lands around the village. “They are saying our visual barrier is now schools and parks,” Ms. Thomas explained. “We would prefer it to be left as trees, nature parks and wetlands, what we have there now.” Ms. Thomas also lists funding as a concern, noting that the City and the Region of Durham may be left on the hook for expensive costs related to infrastructure upgrades not included in phase one. The next stage of OMB hearings is set to begin in May. Ser- vicing plans and individual development applications that will be considered are expected to go before Pickering council prior to the hearings in April. Residents will also get a chance to view the plans during a public open house, which has yet to be sched- uled. Should the board approve the applications, Ms. Rose esti- mated the issuing of building permits for the development could begin as early as 2015. future road work plans By 2015 the first phase of the Hwy. 407 East extension is expected to be completed, and will include a six-lane divided highway running east- west between Brock Road and the planned West Durham Link, a four-lane north-south highway connecting Hwy. 407 and Hwy. 401 in Whitby. Realignment of Brock Road between Fifth Conces- sion Road/Whitevale Road and Seventh Conces- sion Road to bypass Brougham and connect with the new Brock Road/Hwy. 407 interchange located near Sideline 16. A new Hwy. 407 East interchange at Sideline 26. Transfer of Hwy. 7 from the Province to the Region in conjunction with possible widening to match planned improvements on the highway in York Region and east of Brock Road. A proposal to construct a six-lane road with high occupancy vehicle curb lanes along Whites Road/ Sideline 26 from Finch Avenue to Hwy. 7 is being considered. Realignment of Whitevale Road/Fifth Concession as a four-lane arterial road from Brock Road to the western edge of the development. Leigh-Ann Worrall planned to dash home to her apartment nearby in east Oshawa. That’s where her son, two-year-old Keagan, and her new boyfriend, Michael Monckton, awaited her. Ms. Worrall, who at that time went by her maiden name of Cooper, had just begun a day shift at Minacs, where she worked as an atten- dant for OnStar users. To get the preferred day shift, Ms. Worrall had paid her dues, under- going retraining and then working evening and night shifts after an extended medical absence. It had been tough, but she was fall- ing into an agreeable groove. Ms. Worrall and Keagan had moved into a basement apartment on Southgate Drive the previous summer; in a house on a quiet, well- kept residential street, it was the first home they’d had on their own. Mr. Monckton had moved in in October and since late Novem- ber had been providing day-to-day care for Keagan while his mom devoted herself to catching up at work. On this particular day, a Tuesday, Ms. Wor- rall had left the apartment early while Keagan and Mr. Monckton slept. She checked on Kea- gan in his room and heard him slumbering. She was in front of her computer monitor at Minacs by 7:59 a.m. Checking her phone as she left work, Ms. Worrall found a text message from Mr. Mon- ckton, asking what she wanted for lunch. She was nearing the house when she got anoth- er text. It was from Mr. Monckton again. Ms. Worrall caught her breath as she read it. “Get home,” Mr. Monckton had typed. “Call 911.” Ms. Worrall pulled into the driveway at 857 Southgate and rushed to the side door that led to the basement apartment. It was locked. As she fumbled for her keys, the door was opened by Mr. Monckton, who turned quick- ly and rushed down the stairs. Ms. Worrall fol- lowed and found him in Keagan’s room. There was her son, lying on the floor in his pull-up diaper, eyes closed and apparent- ly unconscious. Mr. Monckton, wearing just boxer shorts, crouched over the boy. He was performing CPR. “He’s not breathing,” Mr. Monckton said. Fighting panic, Ms. Worrall called 911. “My son is two and a half!” she shouted at the operator. “He’s not breathing!” Nearby, Durham police officers Matt For- get and Derek Parker were conducting radar duty on Harmony Road. Their attention was caught by an urgent call on the radio: A child at a home on Southgate Drive had no vital signs. Police and paramedics were being dis- patched to the scene. The cops were just a few kilometres away. They stashed their radar gun and hit the emergency lights on their cruiser, heading for 857 Southgate. Back in the apartment, a frantic Ms. Wor- rall was still on the phone. The 911 operator calmly asked questions and tried to guide Mr. Monckton’s resuscitation efforts. “I know exactly how to do CPR,” he called out as Ms. Worrall relayed her advice. But he was wor- ried the air he breathed into the little boy’s mouth didn’t seem to be going into his lungs. Instead, Keagan’s belly was becoming dis- tended, he said. Mr. Monckton took the phone and described the scenario to the operator. She told him to pause and put his ear near the child’s mouth. “Is he breathing?” the operator asked. There was a pause. “No,” Mr. Monckton replied. “I only saw his stomach go up and there’s a gurgling sound in his throat.” The operator asked Mr. Monckton to check for a pulse. He did, and reported he couldn’t find one. He grew flustered. “You’ll have to talk to Leigh-Ann. I’ve got to get this kid breathing,” he said, handing the phone back to Ms. Worrall. He went to kneel over Keagan again. At that moment Constables Forget and Park- er arrived and looked through the doorway of Keagan’s bedroom. Mr. Monckton glanced up at them. “Where the f--- are they?” he shouted. Moments later, the paramedics arrived and took over resuscitation efforts. The cops herded Ms. Worrall and Mr. Monckton into the nearby kitchen. Const. Forget began ask- ing questions, trying to ascertain the cause of Keagan’s medical distress. He asked Mr. Mon- ckton to take him through the morning, step by step, hoping to relay to the paramedics any information that might prove helpful. Mr. Monckton said he and Keagan had slept late, not getting up until about 11 o’clock. He said Keagan, who was potty training, had a bowel movement in the toilet, and that the two of them had a shower. He said he’d left Keagan in his bedroom while he went to get dressed. Mr. Monckton said he returned to Keagan’s bedroom a few minutes later to find the boy on his bed, struggling to breathe. He said he moved Keagan to the floor and began CPR. “How is he?” Mr. Monckton wailed. “Oh my God, I don’t know what happened!” Durham Region Emergency Medical Ser- vices paramedic Darryl Eaton was at this time in Keagan’s room, trying desperately to save the little boy. Keagan had no vital signs; CPR failed to revive him. Mr. Eaton bundled the lit- tle boy over his shoulder and bounded up the steps to a waiting ambulance. As they climbed the stairs he heard strangled gasps emitting from the boy, sounds he interpreted as Kea- gan’s body struggling instinctively to breathe. The paramedics rushed to the hospital in Oshawa, sirens screaming. Mr. Monckton hurried into the bedroom to get dressed. He and Ms. Worrall were driven to the hospital in a Durham police cruiser. Keagan was rushed into an emergency treatment room where efforts to revive him continued. Family members were alerted and began to assemble at the hospital. Among them was Keagan’s biological father, Dan Davis. He and Ms. Worrall waited anxiously for word on their little boy. At 12:27 p.m., just a few minutes after arriv- ing at the hospital, Keagan Davis was declared dead. A doctor spoke to Ms. Worrall and Ms. Davis in a private room. “There’s nothing more we can do,” he told them. Ms. Worrall crumbled. Mr. Davis ran blindly from the room, his mind blank with grief and horror. Later he and Ms. Worrall were ushered into a room where Keagan lay, lifeless. They stared in disbelief at his little body. Ms. Worrall crawled into the bed beside Keagan. She lay there for a time, stroking his hair. Keagan’s body was sent to Toronto for an autopsy. Stunned family members drifted away from the hospital. Missing in the after- math, though, was Mr. Monckton. He had fled the hospital when news of Keagan’s death came. But he had not returned. Michael Monck- ton was nowhere to be found. The Sky Was Crying The Killing of Keagan Davis The following is an excerpt from Durham Region Media Group’s eBook ‘The Sky Was Crying: The Killing of Keagan Davis’. Michael Monc- tion, Keagan’s primary caregiver in the days leading up to his death, was convicted of second-degree murder in the beating death of two- year-old. He was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 15 years. To read the ePub visit www.durhamregion.com. All content copyright Publication Sales Agreement #40052657 Residents willing and able to run it with City of Pickering’s help Kudos to the residents of Whitevale who are trying to de-shutter the closed library in their community. Its 90-year history in the north Pickering hamlet made it an important part of daily life that needs to be up and running again. The library branch closed in December due to declining revenue and high capital costs. But there is a movement afoot to reopen its doors so kids and adults alike can make use of its resources and spend time together reading and learning. The bottom line may have doomed the branch, but a library is more than a place holding books and DVDs: it’s a commu- nity hub, a meeting and gathering place, and this is especially true in a small com- munity. Adding to the community’s attachment to the place, locals helped re-build it in the 1980s after it had fallen on hard times. Its long history in the community is something that needs to continue. The building was put up more than a centu- ry ago and the Whitevale Library League bought it in 1925 for $500. For decades after that it was run independently, until it became part of the Pickering Public Library System in Canada’s centennial year. Resident Don Anderson, who is leading efforts to reclaim the library in partner- ship with resident John Duffus, says he would like to see the community run the facility as a volunteer sharing library. He recalls moving to the community and encountering a very busy place, full of kids and others reading. And that’s what he wants to re-create. “It’s not just about books and the dis- tribution of books, it’s a centre of activity. The key is to make it a place where people meet, that’s what I want to keep.” Supported by the Whitevale and District Resident’s Association, he is speaking with the City about the community taking over the building. There is a precedent in the community: Mr. Anderson says the agreement would be similar to an informal arrangement already in place for the Whitevale Com- munity Centre, which the City maintains and the residents run. As the people of Whitevale showed in the past, they are quite capable of running the show, with some help from the City. While dollars are an important consid- eration, if the cost to taxpayers isn’t exor- bitant, this facility should opens its doors again and assume its important place in the life of the hamlet. Premier is a duly elected MPP To the editor: Re: ‘New premier was imposed on prov- ince’, letter to the editor, durhamregion.com, Feb. 19, 2013. The letter writers seems to misunder- stand the concept of our voting system. I voted for my local MPP candidate. Because his party got more seats than any other, the leader of his party gets to be premier. When the leader- ship changes, the number of seats doesn’t, so the new leader becomes pre- mier. I can’t think of a case where that new leader didn’t call an election within a rea- sonable amount of time but to do so now would be a disservice to the MPPs who were elected, including Kathleen Wynne. She won her seat fair and square. I’m cer- tain there will be an election in due time, but let’s give the leader a chance to show what she is capable of achieving. Then the public can compare her with the opposition and make an informed choice rather than pander to the opportunism of the official opposition. Kevin Goss Ajax What cloud is Hudak on? To the editor: So, Tim Hudak is on a mission with his anti-union, anti-environmentlist rhetoric. You need a union job to earn decent money in Ontario. With this job you get a pension and benefits, you earn good money and pay taxes to the provincial and federal governments. As for unions and environ- mentalists bankrupt- ing the province, what cloud is he on? What about such boondoggles as the E-health fiasco, power stations not completed and abandoned for votes? Then here is the Ornge helicop- ters. Were unions and environmentalists involved in these? Or is it more an attitude of it being government money to waste? The more I hear about Stephen Harper, Tim Hudak and the Conservatives the more reason why everyone should be in a union. Flood cautions issued for Durham DURHAM -- Warmer tempera- tures, snow melt and rain this week could make waterways haz- ardous. Conservation authorities cau- tion there could be increased water levels and flows in creeks and streams, and that means dangerous conditions, especial- ly near area culverts and bridg- es. There could also be flood- ing in low lying and flood-prone areas of the region. Up to 30 millimetres (more than one inch) of rain could fall was expected by Wednesday, before temperatures drop again on Thursday. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses and ponds. Elevated water levels, fast flow- ing water, ice covered creeks and slippery conditions will make stream banks extremely danger- ous. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 1 4 , 2 0 1 3 8 AP Soul 4u shownr BessadaKia.com • 905-421-9191 • 1675 Bayly St, Pickering • Bayly & Brock Rd. near 401 exit BESSADA KIA Where Fa mily MakesThe Difference Kia’s new Customer Friendly Pricing includes delivery and destination fees and all mandatory government levies. The manufacturer refers to it as the RG-31 Mk5. But Durham police Chief Mike Ewles came up with a much more apt description. “It’s like a Hummer on steroids,” the chief enthused when the new vehicle was unveiled for the media March 8 in Oshawa. Indeed, the vehicle, which measures 6.4 metres in length, is almost 2.5 metres wide and weighs in at 7.28 metric tonnes, could at first glance be a bit terrifying. Construct- ed of bulletproof glass and metal plating, it’s designed to safely transport mem- bers of the Tactical Support Unit as they respond to incidents involving firearms or explosives. But the primary purpose of the vehicle, donated by General Dynamics Land Sys- tems Canada, is the safety of officers and civilians, said TSU Staff-Sergeant Mike Cain. “This vehicle essentially is a shield on wheels,” he said. “It doesn’t have any offensive capacities. But it can save lives.” The massive vehicle can carry eight members of the TSU, the specially trained officers deployed during high-risk inci- dents such as armed person calls or sus- pected bomb threats. Equipped with a six- cylinder Cummins diesel engine, it’s capa- ble of doing 100 km/h and can quickly and safely deploy officers or retrieve cops or civilians in danger, said Staff-Sgt. Cain. “This vehicle is going to be put to very good use protecting my officers and pro- tecting this community,” he said. Durham police have been without an armoured vehicle since 1994, when the last one was taken out of commission. Last October when a lengthy stand-off occurred in Whitby, York police brought their vehicle to assist. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 1 4 , 2 0 1 3 11 AP The thyroid glands are in the neck &are responsible for regulating the body’s metabolism.Hyperthyroidism is a condition seen in cats in which there is overproduction of thyroid hormone. This is a fairly common disease seen in middle aged to older cats.Clinical signs may include: weight loss, increased thirst/urination,vomiting/diarrhea, increased appetite (may progress to lack of appetite,if left untreated).Hyperthyroidism is diagnosed by evaluat- ing blood levels of thyroid hormone.Treatment options include oral medications, transdermal medications (medi- cations applied onto the skin),radioactive therapy,&now even therapeutic diet alone. If left untreated hyperthyroid- ism can cause serious complications such as heart disease &blood clots which can be fatal. Written by Dr.Melanie Dell Visit:www.pethealthnetwork.com Out Walking Margaret Carney Birds weathered winter, waiting for spring We’re poised on the brink right now, the razor’s edge between winter and spring. I’m still hearing reports of special birds readers have wintering at their feeders, while word of new arrivals is just starting to trickle in. Betty Cincurak up in Ashburn, for exam- ple, phoned this week to tell me about the rufous-sided towhee she’s had coming to her yard since before Christmas. Like the smaller juncos, this handsome black-white-and- rufous male scratches on the ground beneath her feeder, picking up kernels of shelled corn the Cincuraks put out. They also have a red- bellied woodpecker coming to their suet. Marion Pearson of Enfield phoned me in early January to report a male towhee show- ing up under her feeder. Since it managed to survive subsequent cold snaps, well fed on black oil sunflower seeds, it should, like Betty’s bird, be singing in woods on the Oak Ridges Moraine, claiming the best territory, when all the towhees that migrated south return in a few weeks. The risk will be worth the reward. Roger Beynon sent me a photo of a barred owl he saw in south Pickering this week, proof that at least some of the wood- land owls driven south by hunger this winter found enough meadow voles to eat. Hope- fully, they’ll be fit enough to head back home soon for the breeding season. Heather Wolff of Glasgow reported a pair of ravens coming to her yard, a red-bellied woodpecker and. for a very special half hour, a snowy owl. I hope her big owl, too, is hale enough to head home to the Canadian tun- dra to nest. Bohemian waxwings that visited Durham to feast on our mountain ash berries and cra- bapples this winter must have headed back north again. Last report I had of them was from Reg Marsh of Pickering in late February. He sent dramatic photos of a flock of Bohe- mians perched in a tree against the sky. So much for winter. Recently Lois Gil- lette and Joan Ellis were out for a walk along Oshawa Creek when they spotted three big woodpeckers high in a tree -- northern flick- ers with spring fever. Whether they’d just arrived back, or overwintered in the creek valley, they were obviously ready for court- ship, calling loudly back and forth and hop- ping about in the treetops, flashing their bright yellow underwings. A day or two after that, the white-breast- ed nuthatches in my neighbourhood were calling like crazy, as were the European star- lings in downtown Orono when I stopped in at the bakery for a coffee. One day before, the first redwings, grackles and robins came back. We’re on the cusp, all right, teetering between winter and spring. Perhaps my favourite sign of the times was seeing fresh turkey tracks pressed in a patch of rapidly melting snow. Nature queries: mcarney@interlinks.net or 905-725-2116. For more information call 905-665-7430. ryan pfeiffer / Metroland Birthday funds will go to Durham Humane Society Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com It’s been a tough year for Ajax resident Malki Louison, following a car accident that badly broke her leg and took her off her feet. “After the accident, I was pretty much on my couch for a year,” she said. Ms. Louison doesn’t know what she would have done without her faithful com- panion, a beagle named Soca. “She was always by my side. Always,” she said. Now able take Soca on short walks, Ms. Louison can see the spark in her dog’s eyes as she realizes her human mother is getting better. Still, very in tune with her owner’s feelings, Soca knows when it’s time to take it easy. “She knows I have to take my time and she waits for me at the bottom of the stairs,” she said. So Ms. Louison, turning 50 on March 20 and having had plenty of time to think about what’s important in her life, has decided to give more to animals from now on. She’s starting with her 50th birthday party that she and her husband are hosting this weekend. She’s asking her guests for dona- tions to the Humane Society of Durham Region instead of birthday gifts in honour of her loyal Soca, and the late Jazz, another Beagle who was with her through thick and thin. “I have been blessed to have animals in my life so this is my way of giving back to them for their unconditional love,” she said on her e-vite page, which includes a link to her Canada Helps personal giving page to help support the Humane Society of Dur- ham Region. With a fair-sized group coming out to cel- ebrate her birthday -- also for her, a cele- bration of being back on her feet -- she’s hoping to raise $2,000 for the charity. Aside from her personal goal, Ms. Loui- son hopes more people will start taking on a similar initiative during birthdays and important milestones. Kids often collect donations instead of toys for their birthdays -- this is a great way to get adults on board too. Donors can pay by credit or debit, and donations more than $10 get a tax receipt. “So it’s a real win-win situation,” Ms. Lou- ison said. Those interested in taking on a similar initiative can go to canadahelps.org and start by clicking on ‘How to Give.’ The orga- nization gets a small percentage, but to Ms. Louison, it’s convenient, fast and in the end, supporting a great cause. The new web page features 446 degree completion opportunities at post-secondary institutions in Canada and throughout the world including McMaster University in Hamilton, and universities in British Columbia, Michi- gan, Ireland and Australia. There are also 25 agreements with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology that allow qualified graduates of one-, two- and three-year Durham College programs to enter numerous undergrad- uate degree programs with advanced standing at UOIT. The web page provides details about each agreement including how to apply credits earned at Durham Col- lege toward the university or college degrees, methods for gaining additional credentials through Durham Col- lege, and links to each transfer institution, the transfer degree(s) available and the minimum academic require- ment necessary to enroll. Cheryl Lescom has been a part of the scene for more than 30 years, starting off as a back- ing singer for Ronnie Hawkins and Long John Baldry. After recording two independent CDs and then taking a break to raise a family and recover from cancer, Lescom appeared with a band and it was magic. “When Cheryl teamed up with The Tucson Choir Boys for an appearance at the Grapejam Acoustic Blues Festival, the response was phe- nomenal,” states a press release. “After doing a few more gigs together the decision was made to start writing some original material. After a year of touring and recording, the Cheryl Lescom and The Tucson Choir Boys CD was released, garnering airplay on blues, pop and roots radio across Canada.” Lescom and The Tucson Choir Boys are performing upstairs at The Waterfront on April 19 at 9 p.m. It’s at 590 Liverpool Rd. Tickets are $35, available at The Waterfront and online at www.musicbythebaylive.com. Stars come out to play in Whitby on March 23 WHITBY -- It’s a night of stars in Whitby on March 23. Art imitates life for Pickering teen Jennifer Pappas’s TV series debuts Mike Ruta mruta@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Jennifer Pappas loves to dance. But to be able to do it on TV, as you can imagine, is a much greater thrill. The 19-year-old Pickering resident has a role on a new TV series that debuted on Family Channel this week. The Next Step is a reality-style drama that follows dancers trying to make their mark in the competitive dance world. “So excited; I’m ecstatic,” Pappas says of the show. “It’s my first time acting and dancing on TV.” She agrees the series is similar to a dance version of the popular show Glee. We meet the dancers as they audition to make The Next Step dance studio’s A-Troupe, the best of the best at the stu- dio who represent it at competitions. Pappas, who plays Chloe, says she audi- tioned for the show’s pilot a couple of summers ago at the urging of her dance teachers at Elite Danceworx in Markham. It seemed a great fit as Pappas’s resume includes training in every style of dance from Russian classical ballet to hip hop. She won the Teen Miss Dance of Canada title in 2009. However Pappas didn’t make it onto the pilot. Fast forward ahead and there were open auditions for the show. And while some 300 to 400 hopefuls turned out for the audition weekend, Pappas was one of the few who eventually got the good news. “When I found out that I was going to be playing Chloe, I was in Buffalo at a dance competition,” she explains. Her phone rang and Pappas’s mom advised her not to answer, concerned that the call might cost a lot of money. But she saw who was calling and knew she had to pick up. Pappas says she had just come off stage and was “high on adrenaline. “I was in shock,” she says of the news. She didn’t want to steal any of the thun- der from the studio at the competitive event so she kept the news to herself. The secret is definitely out now. The Next Step’s first episode was March 8 and its regular spot is on Fridays at 7 p.m. Like the other dancers, Pappas says Chloe has to learn to balance dancing with the rest of her life. She says Chloe is very determined and focused on dance and likes to keep things to herself. She knows first-hand that the former part is definitely true: the commitment required of a competitive dancer is a big one. “You really do have to be super focused and determined to be a dancer,” Pap- pas says, adding a dancer has to learn to brush off a few bad auditions. Born and raised in Pickering, she’s a graduate of St. Mary Catholic Secondary School. Pappas says she’s been bitten by the acting bug and wants to pursue it and dancing as a career. And like a dance routine, she plans on giving it everything she’s got. “I feel like, if this is really something I want to do, I should go full-force at it,” she reasons. PICKERING -- Jennifer Pappas, who plays Chloe on the Family Channel’s new series, The Next Step, says she is not unlike her character on the show. Leading the Lords to an OCAA east region title and an 18-2 conference record, Christopher earned top honours as the OCAA coach of the year. Missing the playoffs a year ago, the Lords have made a complete 180 this season as they went on a program high 16-game winning streak and won the regional title. Christopher is in his fifth season as head coach having com- piled a conference record of 67-37 (.644 winning percentage). The Lords have won two regional titles under his leadership. Christopher will be the OCAA’s nominee for the CCAA national coach of the year award. Leah Saar (Pickering) and Meghan Renwick (Brooklin) from the women’s team were named OCAA first team all-stars, with team- mate Allison Doris (Ajax) earning second team all-star recognition. Saar finished second in OCAA east region scoring averaging 3.6 points per set while registering 212 kills, 27 aces, 19 blocks and 95 digs. This was Saar’s first year back on the court after sitting out three years recovering from wrist injury. Renwick led the Lords offence in the setter position distribut- ing the ball evenly throughout the line-up. Durham had a well- balanced offensive attack with seven players averaging 1.9 points per set or more. Renwick also frustrated team’s defen- sive units as she added 20 aces to her totals. This was Ren- wick’s second career OCAA all-star award. Making her return to the Lords line-up in 2012-13, Doris was a big part of the Lords success as she fin- ished the year with 116 kills, 33 aces, 11 blocks and 68 digs. On the men’s side, Durham received two first team all-star bids as Riley McAllister (Oshawa) and Craig Lush (Port Perry) were honoured. McAllister was the quarterback of the Lords offence in his first year in the Lords line-up. Four members on Durham averaged more than 2.3 points per set while McAllister chipped in with 29 kills, 23 aces, 34 blocks and 74 digs. Lush was a dominating force up the middle as he had a team high 46 blocks. Despite playing in only 58 sets, Lush still finished in the top ten in OCAA total blocks.Oshawa -- Durham College volleyball player Leah Saar was named an OCAA first team all-star. AL FOURNIER PHOTO Hockey Durham West Jr. Lightning meet London in quarter-finals AJAX -- The Durham West Jr. Lightning will open their Provincial Women’s Hockey League quarter-final series against London with a pair of home games this weekend. The Lightning host Game 1 of the best- of five series on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with the second game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The series then shifts to London for games three and four on Fri- day, March 22 and Saturday, March 23. If a fifth and deciding game is needed, the Lightning will host it on Sunday, March 24. All home games are played at the Ajax Community Centre. The series features the third seeded Lightning, against a London team that fin- ished sixth. The teams split their two games in the regular season, the Lightning winning 1-0 on Feb. 1, but losing 2-1 back on Sept. 30. The Lightning advanced after com- pleting a three-game sweep over Oakville. Dana Fairbarn, Kennedy Marchment, Laura Horwood, Stephanie Cooper and Michele Knecht were the goal scorers in a 5-1 win in Game 3. Basketball Michael’s Eatery keeps on winning in Ajax men’s league AJAX -- A decisive 69-41 win over the Right Step was Michael’s fourth win in the last five games in the Ajax Men’s Basket- ball League. The hot streak has moved Michael’s into a second-place tie with the Top Shelf, who lost to ESN Packaging 40-36. Michael’s recent success has been due to a balanced attack offensively. Everyone chipped in for the win with Rob Hare leading the way with a season-high 25 points. Roy Bailey and Claude Whitfield added a dozen each. The Right Step, hit hard by recent injuries, got a strong game from Ian David with 18, while solid guard Billy Jack had 13. First-place ESN had their hands full with the Shelf but guards Calvin Simon and Stephen Johnston tallied 13 and 10 respectively to lead the way. Ravi Persad had 13 for the Shelf. North Alliance Press got back in the win column with a hard-fought victory over Dickson’s Printing 50-40. Sherwin James had the hot hand for NAP scoring 21, Dan Deveau added 17. Scott Poulton and Merv Sutton had 10 each for Dickson’s. WHITBY -- Durham hockey fans can see many of the greatest former NHLers at an upcoming fundraising game. This year was a special year for the tourney as it had been chosen as the Hockey Day in Canada location. The CBC covered the tour- nament throughout the day and the players had a chance to meet some greats like Darcy Tucker, Lanny McDonald and many more. The Stanley Cup was also there for all to see. It was a long day for the boys as they played three games with a 1-2 record. The tourney was a great time for the players though, as there is nothing like a game of pond hockey to celebrate the great Canadian winter. Team players are Alec Armstrong, Andrea DeMarinis, Patrick Duthie, Nolan Khan, Bryce Lawrence, Eric Legere, David Massara, Zack Palantzas, Steven Paul, Joseph Scali, Kurt Schaefer, Garrett Schneider, Keenan Schneider, Luke Sheffield, Darryl Smith, Pat- rick Viola, Ryan Viola, Hunter Ryce (absent). Coaches are Angelo Palantzas, Brad Law- rence and Derek Khan. PETERBOROUGH -- The Pickering Panthers midget selects played in a pond hockey tournament in Peterborough that was part of Hockey Day in Canada. Durham badminton teams win silver and bronze at Senior Winter Games WHITBY -- The badminton team for District 13, which covers most of Dur- ham Region, came home with silver and bronze from the 2013 Ontario 55+ Senior Winter Games. The competition was held in Hunts- ville, with a total of 10 competing sports. The silver was won by Justin Lue and Don Tai from the 55+ men’s dou- bles, while the bronze was won by John Houghton and Elizabeth Kirk from the 65+ mixed doubles. The Central Ontario Badminton Associ- ation president Russ Le Blanc addressed the team on Wednesday night with praise. “Badminton is a fast-paced sport that can be a part of an active healthy life- style,” said Le Blanc. “It’s great to see, and meet, people who haven’t let the label ‘senior citizen’ get in the way of enjoying the sport. You are fantastic badminton ambassadors.” The Ontario 55+ Senior Winter Games is held every two years, with competing participants representing teams from all across the province. Canadian baby boomers plan full, active lives in their later years. But disease and disability will cut short those dreams for many. The alarming fact is that in reality, statistics show boomers should expect to spend their last 10 years in sickness. “Your golden year dreams may turn into nightmares because of ailing health,” says Heart and Stroke Foun- dation spokesperson Dr. Beth Abramson. “People need to understand that our lifestyle decisions today can make a huge difference in how we live out our later years.” Will you grow old with vitality? Dr. Abramson emphasizes that up to 80 per cent of premature heart dis- ease and stroke is preventable. She suggests focusing on five key behaviours: EXERCISE: Physical inactivity results in nearly four quality years of life lost NUTRITION: Eating a poor diet results in nearly three quality years of life lost REDUCING STRESS: Experiencing excessive stress results in nearly two years of life lost BEING SMOKE-FREE: Smoking results in two and half years of life lost AVOID EXCESSIVE DRINKING: Unhealthy alcohol consumption results in two years of life lost du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 1 4 , 2 0 1 3 29 AP Ronald J. The Focus on Business advertising feature was designed to help businesses succeed at an affordable price. The feature has five zones: Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington, and advertisers can choose to run in any number of them. If they want to target a specific area, they can choose one zone or if they want broad coverage they can choose to run in all five. Advertising packages are available for six weeks, 18 weeks, 36 weeks and 52 weeks, and discounted rates are available for longer-term commitments. “I have nothing but good things to say about the Focus on Business feature,” says Wayne Hutchison, owner of Durham Windows and Doors, who has been advertising in the feature for 15 years. Having an ad in the newspaper every week helps businesses build recognition. Readers who see the advertisement on a regular basis become familiar with the business. Running in the section long term shows potential customers that the business is consistent and is there for the long term. The feature includes a 3” wide by 1.5” deep ad, but the best part is the free editorial that comes with each six week run. The articles will talk in-depth about the business and can include a photograph or image. Many advertisers find that the articles provide a surge in phone calls and sales. The articles allow readers to learn more about the businesses, including detailed information about the products and services they offer. Many advertisers have seen a dramatic increase in their bottom line because of advertising in the section. For more information on the Focus on Business feature or to book an ad, please call Connie Baker at (905) 579-4400 ext. 2271 or email cbaker@durhamregion.com. It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Matthew Robert McFarlane after a courageous and valiant battle with cancer. Son of Mary-Ellen and Michael. Loving brother to Mitchell and Mark. Predeceased by his grandparents Muriel and Carl McFarlane, and Dorothy and Robert Graham. Nephew to Connie and Kevin McFarlane and Cindy and Kevin Spinney. Cousin to Kathleen, Carly and David. Matthew was a devoted son, brother, nephew and cousin to his family and enjoyed nothing more than getting together with his family and friends. Matthew was well known within the Bay Ridges community, a member of Branch 606 of the Royal Canadian Legion and volunteered at the Bay Ridges Long Term Care Centre. He brought many smiles to the staff and students of Bayview Heights Public School, Pine Ridge Secondary School and Ajax High School. Matthew thoroughly enjoyed playing baseball and bowling with West Durham Special Olympics. Although he didn't play in the league, he was well known and will be missed by the Westshore Mixed SloPitch Association. Matthew loved to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Rock and the Rock cheerleaders. He liked country music and in particular Alan Jackson. His charming personality, warm smile, infectious laugh, kind and generous heart will be greatly missed. We have all learned from him what is meant to have true courage, determination and how to be a better person. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. James Rutka, Dr. Howard Petroff, Dr. Clive Schwartz and their staff. Visitation will be held at the DeSTEFANO FUNERAL HOME, 1289 Keith Ross Drive, Oshawa on Thursday, March 14th from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Friday, March 15th at 11 A.M. Interment to follow at Duffin Meadows Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Camp Oochigeas (a camp for children with cancer) would be appreciated by his family.
