It all started in November 2011, when contractors working on a vacant farmhouse in north Pickering alerted police to the exis- tence of a “confinement room” in the basement. “It’s bizarre,” Durham homicide Detective Chuck Nash said after the room was discovered. “It is a spooky scene.” The room was heavily reinforced and insulated, with double- paned windows and a three-inch door made of multiple planks of plywood. There was a bench in the newly painted room and chains hung from the ceiling. The door was bolted from the out- side with tire irons. Once bolted, there would be no way to open the door from the inside. The premier announced Thursday the Province is earmarking $10 million for front door locks, entry buzzers and security cam- eras in Ontario’s schools. “It’s an appropriate and a reasonable response,” he announced at a Toronto school. About 850 of Ontario’s 4,000 elementary schools received $3 million in funding for similar safety measures in 2005, but the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in the U.S. has raised questions as to whether Ontario has taken “all reasonable measures,” said the premier. The Province is accepting applications in January, with hopes of having all schools upgraded by the time school resumes next September. Mr. McGuinty said he doesn’t know how many schools don’t have a secure door-lock system to screen visitors, but the $10 million allocated should “cover the water- front” in getting all schools upgraded. Between six to eight schools in the Dur- ham District School Board received funding for security systems in 2005, said safe schools officer Linda Warren. “What we’re really looking for is continuing to make our schools safe,” she said. “That has always been our goal here at the DDSB and we will certainly be working with whatever funding they give us.” The key is finding a good balance between a secure and pleasant environment. “What we want is to have welcoming schools to parents and community members while wanting to keep students safe,” said Ms. Warren. She said each school has a Safe and Accept- ing Schools team which meets annually for a safety audit and to discuss ways to keep schools safe. Anne O’Brien, superintendent of educa- tion and leader of Safe Schools initiatives for the Durham Catholic District School Board, said in an e-mail school safety is an extremely important priority for the board. She said decisions about funding are made collaboratively with the trustees and will be discussed with Safe School Teams in each school. Also, the board plans to review cur- rent safety procedures and protocols for the schools. Some of these include: annual safety audits of all schools; regular safety lockdown drills; strict adherence to standards regarding school access procedures (including locked doors); standardized sign-in procedures for all guests; and threat assessment training for all administrative staff. “Although the board has these and other Safe Schools practices in place, we are con- tinuously reviewing them to ensure optimal safety within our schools and communities,” Ms. O’Brien said. The intrigue thickened on Jan. 6, 2012 when the home in which the room was found, at 140 Sev- enth Concession, was destroyed by fire in the early morning hours. While police avoided linking the fire to the confine- ment room, they did deem it “suspicious” and opened anoth- er investigation. Interest in the case got a boost in February when police announced they had arrest- ed Robert Edwin White, 44, of Oshawa. He was charged with break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence, to which he pleaded guilty, and attempted kidnapping, which was later withdrawn. Over the course of his trial, the court heard that Mr. White planned to use the room to con- fine Gwen Armstrong, a friend of his estranged ex-wife Patri- cia Gallagher. Ms. Armstrong, court heard, provided Ms. Gal- lagher emotional and financial support following the couple’s separation. “I am still in shock,” a visibly emotional Ms. Armstrong told the court in September. Although she had read of Mr. White’s arrest and saw photos of the room in the newspaper, she hadn’t made the connec- tion between the plot and her friendship with his wife until she was informed of Mr. White’s intent by police. “Since then those same pho- tos have been running through my mind constantly,” she said during her victim impact state- ment. “They fill me with such horrors that I feel physically ill. I don’t know if I will ever get the images out of my head.” Evidence gathered by police indicated Mr. White had spent more than a year working on the room. “It was built for a very sinister purpose,” prosecutor Dave Sles- sor said. “It was built to confine Ms. Armstrong.” In an 18-minute address to the court during his sentenc- ing hearing, Mr. White blamed bitterness over a messy divorce from Ms. Gallagher, with whom he has two children, for his actions. “I lived on bitterness for a long time; it’s not a good way to live,” Mr. White said from the prison- er’s dock. “I’m not at all proud of my behaviour. I thought I was doing this to help my children.” On Oct. 4 Ontario Court Justice Mary Teresa Devlin sentenced Mr. White to two years less a day in jail, noting his “nefarious” plan was only thwarted by his capture. “Mr. White committed the offence as part of a greater plan to kidnap and confine a specif- ic person and he never aban- doned his plan,” Justice Dev- lin said. “Rather, the plan was thwarted when he was arrested before construction of the con- finement room was completed.” --With files from Jeff Mitchell Darryl Sherman3rdGeneration Owner BOXINGWEEKBLOWOUT SAVE ON: •Floor Models &Discontinued Styles •Special Orders at Sale Prices •Mattresses •Sofas • Bedrooms • Dining Rooms •Sectionals •Home Office SALESTARTSTODAY9-9 WORTH THE DRIVE TO WILSON FURNITURE OSHAWA 5 DAYS TO SAVEUP TO 60% OFF HUGESAVINGSAT THE LEATHERSTORE FREE PARKING(ask for tokens) 905-723-2255 HOURSMon. - Wed. 9-6Thurs. & Fri. 9:00-9:00Sat. 9:30-5:30 Sun. 12-5 Main:20 Centre St. N., Downtown OshawaLeather Store:81 Richmond St. W., Oshawa www.wilsonfurniture.com SAME FAMILY OWNED | 2 LOCATIONS | AN OSHAWA TRADITION SINCE 1934 PICKERING from page 1 Pickering farmhouse dungeon case Newsmaker of the Year Download your free copy on Dec. 27 at durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Take a deeper look into some of the top stories of 2012 through a new initiative being launched by the Metroland Media Group’s Durham Region Division. ON ALLJEWELLERY Animal services asks for public information on source of meat Tara HaTHerly thatherly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Ajax animal services is appealing to residents for help identifying the person who left out raw meat that was recently eaten by several dogs. The meat was left out in the Harwood Avenue and Clover Ridge Drive area recently, and bylaw officers have been can- vassing the neighbourhood try- ing to determine where it came from. “It’s important for residents to understand the public safe- ty and nuisance bylaw, which prohibits a person from feed- ing wild or stray animals,” said Derek Hannan, Ajax manager of bylaw services. “By not feeding these animals, it will deter them from becom- ing accustomed to humans. The maximum fine for this offence is up to $100,000.” Several dogs have been taken to the Ajax Animal Hospital recently to induce vomiting after ingesting the meat, which owners feared could be tainted by people looking to harm wild animals following several resi- dent reports of coyote encoun- ters. Signs reinforcing the bylaw have been placed in the area by staff. Ajax animal services is advis- ing residents to always keep their dogs leashed and away from discarded items. Anyone with information about where the meat came from is asked to contact bylaw services at 905-619-2529 exten- sion 3370. It would arrive at some ridiculously early month, even August or Sep- tember, but that didn’t matter. Over the next few weeks or months until Christmas Eve, sometimes, hours might be spent happily por- ing over those pages of toys and goodies, wondering, hoping, wishing. One of my favourite things was to sit, at night, by the lights of the Christ- mas tree and slowly flip through that treasury of delights. As a kid, that was pretty good fun. As an adult, I would still like to spend some happy moments in a Christmas Wish Book, but the actual wishes, I think, would have changed considerably from the days of LEGO and Lite- Brite and Kerplunk, both in the realm of what I would wish for myself and what I would wish for others in my life. My grown-up Wish Book, for instance, would have a section devoted to Time. Time with friends, time with family, time with my rapidly growing children. You could order pleasant, laughter-filled hours around the dinner table. Quiet, reflective hours around the fireplace or woodstove, with optional wine or spirits in decorative crystal decanters. And that most pre- cious time of all, visits with my own parents, time when I still get to feel the special love of being some- one’s child again, even for a little while. My Wish Book would have sections called Love, Joy and Peace of Mind. Here I could place orders for both giving and receiving these precious items in a host of different incarna- tions. Here is a walk in the forest with a special friend, accompanying dogs are extra but well worth the added cost. Flip the page and there is a skinny dip at twilight with a beautiful life partner, candles on the dock included. Priceless. And here, the perfect gift for all the parents in my life. The joy of seeing their children grow to become happy, decent, kind and loving people. The stocking stuffers are endless and so affordable that I find myself wondering why I don’t treat myself and those I love to more of these perfect little moments. A quiet cigar on the back deck on a warm sum- mer night. The smell of outboard engine mix and early morning lake. A real, live phone call to a friend. An unexpected kiss. Holding hands. Bringing someone a mug of tea before they think to ask for it. Sharing a thunderstorm. A real, live handwritten letter to a friend. A tray of fresh- baked cookies. Bare feet on dewy grass. Old movies and popcorn. Board games. A good book and a hammock. A soak in the tub with the winter wind howling outside. The list goes on and on. As virtual as that grown-up Wish Book is, it can still be a reality. The nice thing is we don’t have to wait until August or September for it to arrive. We keep it in our hearts the whole year round. And the more we open it, the more time we spend pondering how to make our lives and the lives of those around us better and happier in myriad little ways, the more the book grows and grows to accommodate us. There are still pages in there I haven’t visited. Happy holidays everyone. -- Durham’s Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column. Reach for the promise a new year holds in Durham Another year is almost behind us. And what a year it was. As we look ahead to 2013 and the promise it brings, of renewal, self-improvement, reach- ing for new heights, or breaking free of old habits, the turn of the calendar makes it seem more important and more achievable. We’ll resolve to lose weight, or quit smoking, or hit the gym, all in search of better health. We’ll resolve to be more patient, less prone to anger, or be kinder to people, all in search of inner contentment. We’ll resolve to undertake, finish, contrib- ute, or oversee things that we’ve put off, all in search of achievement. In a larger context, we hope, too, that the municipal governments that lead and guide us, will resolve to renew their agreement with taxpayers and manage finances carefully, complete projects within budget, and continue to work towards a better quality of life for all. In Pickering, we’d like to see resolution over the issue of Councillor Doug Dickerson’s cam- paign expense audit so residents and City offi- cials can deal appropriately with the outcome and move on. In Ajax, we hope that its ambitious and tem- plate-setting development at the long-unused southwest corner of Harwood Avenue and Bayly Street, led by Medallion Corporation, continues to make progress and shape devel- opment for years to come. In Whitby, we wish for a resolution -- a cause -- concluded in the fatal fire that claimed three young lives in April. The office of the fire mar- shal continues to investigate, but the commu- nity awaits a final report. In Oshawa, we would like to see increased, respectful and transparent co-operation between ethanol plant proponents and the larger community as that issue continues to evolve, and a pledge from General Motors to maintain jobs here at home and respect the taxpayer-funded bailout that prevented its bankruptcy in Canada. In Clarington, we’d like to see the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission issue the neces- sary approvals for the rebuild at Darlington fol- lowing the wrap-up of recent public hearings related to its environmental assessment pro- cess. In Uxbridge, a final resolution is needed on the issue of heavy trucks in the downtown, an issue that has literally been rumbling for years. And nearby in Scugog, we’d like to see the huge fill project required for the Green- bank Airport expansion continue with a mini- mum of disruption to residents, while allow- ing the project to proceed in a timely fashion. A new year lies ahead. Let’s reach for the promise it holds. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 2 7 , 2 0 1 2 6 AP *DO NOT PAY - O.A.C. Popular dog play area gets enhancement PICKERING -- Dog owners can let their animals run free without worry of anger- ing other park-goers thanks to new fencing for the leash-free section of Grand Valley Park. The leash-free area, which was the City’s first, was opened in 2010 following com- munity consultation. “The leash-free areas are wildly popular,” said Lindsey Narraway, supervisor of ani- mal services for the City. “You will always see a number of dogs and their owners there at any given time. By fully fencing the lower leash-free area, we just made it a bit more secure for the dogs, their owners and other park users.” The lower leash-free area at the park, which is located on the Third Concession west of Valley Farm Road, was originally only fenced along the front entrance, with trees and brush acting as natural barriers elsewhere. Since its opening, City staff and a volun- teer working group have been monitoring the area and providing general upkeep. The construction of new fencing came from a set of recommendations from the volunteer working group, which suggest- ed fencing as a way to prevent dogs from escaping, running into the forest or sur- prising patrons on the park’s hiking trails. “I thank the City for working with the community in implementing and improv- ing these much needed leash-free areas,” said Glenn Brown, a member of the work- ing group. The leash-free section of the park pro- vides more than two acres of greenspace with a gazebo for people to rest in while their dogs run around. Grand Valley Park also has a smaller leash-free area for peo- ple with mobility issues or small dogs. For more information and rules for leash-free areas, visit www.pickering.ca/ animals. Durham Region is home to two excel- lent wineries, which also produce non- alcoholic sparkling beverages that your whole family can safely enjoy this holi- day season. At Archibald’s Estate Winery in Bowmanville, great wines are grown, not made. All of its wines are ferment- ed, filtered and bottled on site using the company’s own apples and other qual- ity Ontario fruit. This holiday season, pick up a bottle from their variety of fla- vourful dry wines, off-dry wines, semi- sweet wines and dessert wines. If bubbly beverages tickle your taste buds, their sparkling cider is the perfect treat for your festive bash. Their cider is available in apple, apple-raspberry, apple-cranberry and apple-black cur- rant blends, all of which make for a tasty toast at midnight. Check out their full listing online at www.archibaldswinery. com. Ocala Winery in Port Perry also pro- duces a plentiful list of wines using only their own fruit and other local Ontario products. Their wine list includes plen- ty of grape, fruit and dessert wines to complement any tasty treats served at your New Year’s bash. Or, stop by and pick up a bottle of their non-alcoholic sparking juice for your family to enjoy following the year-end countdown. Take your pick from either apple or grape flavours. Visit www.oca- lawinery.com to make your selection. So when planning your New Year’s Eve party this year, make a stop in either Bowmanville or Port Perry to pick up a local bottle of cheer that the whole fam- ily can enjoy. Please remember to be responsible this holiday season. Ciders and juices produced with local fruit are a tasty way to toast the year ahead. You’ll also be supporting Dur- ham Region’s economy by shopping locally. What’s your favourite way to ring in the new year in Durham Region? Drop us a line on Twitter at @DurhamTour- ism to share your New Year’s Eve tra- ditions. And from all of us at Durham Tourism, have a safe and happy holi- day. The agreements cover more than 800 elementary teachers and more than 300 occa- sional teachers across the board over a two-year period from Sept. 1, 2012 to Aug. 31, 2014. While OECTA had signed a memoran- dum of understanding with the Ministry of Education in the summer, local boards and OECTA divisions had to sign their own collective agreements. Both ratified contracts now must be approved by the minister to ensure they’re in compliance with Bill 115, the Putting Students First Act, which includes a number of stipulations to be included in the contracts. Board and union representatives said contract negotiations were amicable. “With limited opportunity afforded to bargain local issues, we were able to reach agreement on minor improve- ments in the form of letters of intent and understanding as well as some house- keeping matters,” said Dan Gryzwacz, president, OECTA Durham Elementary Unit. “The agreed-to items, the current terms in the collective agreement and the mem- orandum of understanding, will form the basis of our teachers’ working conditions over the next two years.” Karen Valentine, chairwoman of the board, said she’s pleased that all par- ties have reached agreements “which we feel are fair and consistent with Bill 115.” Floor Model Blowout Boxing We ekBlowout Event NOHST!* Bars & Wine Cabinets Recliners Grandfather Clocks Home Theatre Seating Sofas & Loveseats Hundreds ofFabric andLeather tochoose from 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 * Credit equal to the value of the HST. The eighth annual Ajax Polar Bear Swim takes place at 1 p.m. at Paradise Beach, off Lakeview Boulevard between Shoal Point and Pickering Beach roads. Proceeds from the event support the Heart of it All campaign, which is raising funds to purchase portable echo cardio- gram machines for the Ajax-Pickering hos- pital. Organizers hope to raise $5,000 by collecting donations at the event, as well as online at http://on.fb.me/T15cU0. “We’ll all go down to the beach and get in and get out, this is not about heroics, it’s not about seeing how long you can stay out there,” said co-organizer Eric Novak. “If you’re someone who believes that 2013 is the kind of year that you’ve never had before, you might want to consider starting off by doing something you’ve never done. If you’re going to leave your comfort zone and make it a great year, you might as well start off way outside your comfort zone.” He recommended participants arrive at 12:30 p.m., and encouraged people to come dressed in crazy costumes. Spectators are also encouraged to come out to cheer on swimmers. There will be giveaways, and lots of prizes, for participants and specta- tors, in categories including best costume, best dressed group and much more. Swimmers should wear shoes into the water and take towels or blankets and warm clothes to put on after emerging from the frigid water. Participants are also encouraged to have a spotter -- someone waiting to help them warm up. There will be free hot beverages to help warm people up as well. Sponsors still have time to get involved by contacting Mr. Novak by phone at 905- 231-0341, or through the event’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/AjaxPolar- BearSwim. A video including footage from last year’s event can be viewed online at http://bit.ly/12sjf6u. “Just come for some fun, let loose,” Mr. Novak said, adding the event takes place rain, snow or shine. “Let’s have a good cel- ebration, let’s be smart about it, let’s enjoy the day, let’s raise some money for a good cause and let’s start 2013 in a way that some people thought they’d never do.” Reporter Tara Hatherly can be found on Twitter @Tara_ Hatherly and on Facebook by searching Tara Hatherly. But aside from our usual goals of losing weight or exercising more, we should also take the time to ensure we’re giving our pets the best possible care. • If your pet isn’t already spayed or neutered, make an appointment. Hav- ing a pet sterilized gives them a num- ber of health benefits, and it helps reduce pet overpopulation. Unfortu- nately, there isn’t a low-cost spay/neu- ter clinic in Durham yet, but there is one in Newmarket. Call 905-898-6112 to make an appointment. • Make sure your pet is getting enough exercise. Dogs should go on regular walks to socialize and stay active. Also, play with cats by using toys on a string or a laser pointer. Felines tend to do a lot of sitting and need motivation to move from their favourite spot. • Keep your cat indoors. It’s one of the best things you can do for your feline. This reduces the chance of them being hit by cars, getting lost, getting into fights, picking up diseases, or being poisoned by neighbours sick of cats using their gardens as bathrooms. It’s terrible but it happens. • Pet obesity is a serious issue. Make sure you’re not overfeeding your cat just to stop their meowing, for exam- ple. Play with them instead. Too much weight can hurt an animal’s joints and cause serious health problems such as diabetes. • Take responsibility for your dog. When a dog bites a child, it’s a terri- ble time for all involved. But it’s up to humans to pay attention to the warn- ing signs that dogs often give before a bite. If you notice your dog is getting agitated around a child, (telltale signs include yawning when they’re interact- ing, licking their chops, turning away from the child and growling) separate them right away. • Pick up after your dog. It makes everyone happy. • Like humans, pets should get an annual check-up. And pay attention to warning signs that your pet is sick. If they start acting out of character or stop eating, for example, get them checked. I wish all the animal lovers and their precious pets a very happy and safe 2013. Durham Christmas bird count reveals surprises Given the weather -- dark clouds and rain most of the day -- who would have expected to break records on a Durham Region Christmas Bird Count? Not me, that’s for sure. Peer- ing through a fogged-up, rain-spattered telescope at dawn on Dec. 16, scan- ning for waterfowl riding the waves of a wind-whipped Lake Ontario, I confess I felt pessimistic about finding many birds at all, given their tenden- cy to hunker down during foul weather. But the day was filled with sur- prises, and as a crowd of rain- soaked participants gathered after dark for the tally, details started coming together, one story after another, building up to an amazing total and quite an unexpected climax. First of all were the waterfowl. I wasn’t the only volunteer peering out over the lake, and better eyes and better vantage points garnered glimpses of all three scoter species, white-winged, surf and black, as well as two king eiders, three wood ducks, and a record-breaking 850 gadwall. Sharp-eyed Tyler Hoar of Oshawa watched a black-legged kittiwake -- an ocean- going bird, brand new for the count -- circling the bay off Darlington. Glenn Coady had a Eurasian wigeon off Thick- son’s Point in Whitby, another new bird for the count, as well as two dunlin feeding on algae-cov- ered rocks there -- who expected to find shore- birds in mid-December? Ron and Doug Tozer had two Harliquin ducks along the shore near the old psych hospital, and three ruddy ducks in Whitby harbour. Inland, seven barred owls were found, tying a previous record. That ruby-crowned kinglets, eastern bluebirds and yellow-rumped warblers were seen at all is surprising, given that by rights they should be way south by now, with other insect eaters. That numbers of all three matched or broke previous records was truly noteworthy. New records for Bohemian waxwing (213) and hoary redpoll (5), both welcome winter visitors, made satisfying additions to the list. And then there was perhaps the biggest surprise of all, another bird new to the count. Otto Peter and Jim McKnight of Oshawa were checking out a small park not far from the Oshawa Shopping Centre when Otto spotted a yellow bird with two yellow wingbars. Flipping through the field guide, they found one picture leap out at them, and said, “That’s the bird.” A western tanager, which should by rights be wintering in western Mexi- co right now, beyond the Sierra Madres. Photos taken when Otto located the bird again three days later reaffirmed the identification. This is the sec- ond record ever for western tanager in Durham Region. No, we didn’t break the all-time high of 98 spe- cies, set in 2006. But 95 birds on a rainy day in December in Durham Region was a worthy total, plus five other species in count week: merlin, white-fronted goose, purple sandpiper, white- crowned sparrow and golden eagle. The men’s and women’s volleyball teams have closed out the 2012 portion of their schedules with identical 9-1 records in OCAA action, and while they’ve taken dif- ferent roads to reach this point, they hope to take the same one through the rest of the season en route to a shot at winning a provincial championship. “A hundred percent. That’s exactly where we want to be,” said women’s coach Shane Christopher, who is in his fifth year at the helm of the program. “That was our goal right from the end of the summer when we started training with this group and started putting the final pieces together. Our ulti- mate goal is a championship, and I truly believe we should and will compete for a provincial title.” The success of Christopher’s team has been led by some familiar faces to vol- leyball enthusiasts throughout Durham Region. From Ajax’s Allison Doris to Pickering’s Leah Saar, Newcastle’s Kerri Fotherby and Whitby’s Meghan Renwick among others, it’s been that core mixed with some new faces that helped make for the solid first half. “The crew I’ve got this year, they are very experienced and very mature and it’s been a pleasure to have this group and watch them play,” Christopher said. Eleven players on the roster of 16 are from Durham Region. Over the Christmas break, the girls will be on a strict training program to ensure they come back to the fold in the new year in top shape, allowing the club to hopeful- ly pick up right where it left off as winner of seven straight. The Lords haven’t lost since Nov. 7 against Trent. Meanwhile, for men’s coach Andrew Hinchey, the story behind his team’s suc- cess is a little different. Sure, they too have a roster built around solid returnees, and local ones at that, but they’ve also been bitten by the injury bug throughout the first half and haven’t been able to find much consistency within the roster. That, though, makes their success all the more impressive. “One of the big stories for us this year is that even though we’ve had a lot of suc- cess, we’ve had to deal through a lot of injuries. That means we’ve had a complete team effort in getting some of the wins that we have. It creates a nice team culture that way,” he said. While he has tried to turn the negative injury situation into a positive, Hinchey is looking forward to the January to see what this team can accomplish with a full com- pliment of players in their regular roles. More than half of the team’s 14 players, including star setter Riley McAllister, call Durham Region home. McAllister is one of three Oshawa residents on the team. Despite losing their final game before the break, the Lords were nearly flawless in their previous eight, dropping just five sets in going undefeated from Nov. 2 to Nov. 28. That success has helped the players real- ize just what could be accomplished come the end of the year. That, of course, being a championship. >Saar, Doris lead Durham SUBMITTED PHOTOS OSHAWA -- Pickering’s Leah Saar (left), and Ajax’s Allison Doris are among the leaders on the Durham College women’s volleyball team. Hockey Watch AJAX -- Timely goals and stellar goaltend- ing allowed the Durham West Junior Light- ning to win all three games over the week- end. The Provincial Women’s Hockey League team headed into the Christmas break winners of three in a row, and undefeated in the month of December, compiling six wins and a tie in seven games. The surge has moved the Lightning into third place in the 20-team league, one point back of sec- ond-place Whitby, and just three behind first-place Mississauga. Jackie Rochefort posted back-to-back shutouts, blanking Oakville 1-0 on Friday, then repeating her perfection Saturday in a 6-0 victory over Aurora. In the win at Oakville, Carly Marchment scored the winner 3:45 into overtime, gaining the extra point. The following day home to Aurora, Laura Horwood scored three times to lead the offence. The Light- ning closed out the weekend with a 2-1 win on home ice over Bluewater, as Brittany St. James and Stephanie Cooper scored sec- ond period goals to erase a 1-0 deficit. The weekend leaves the Lightning with a 16-4-1-1 record, returning to league play on Jan. 11 in Stoney Creek. Lightning three for three on weekend PICKERING -- The final game before the Christmas break didn’t end on a good note for the Pickering Panthers. The Ontario Junior Hockey League club lost 7-2 to the Newmarket Hurricanes on home ice Friday at the Pickering Recreation Complex, and head into the break on a two- game losing streak, 11-20-4 overall. Brodie Tutton and Aidan Wallace had the goals for the Panthers. Tutton opened the scoring in the first period as the teams finished the opening 20 minutes tied one apiece. Newmarket scored three unan- swered in the second to take a 4-1 lead, but Wallace’s goal in the third cut the deficit to two. Newmarket scored three more in the third to close out the scoring. Conor Barrie was busy in the Panthers net, facing 40 shots on the night, while his teammates fired 26 the other way. In the race for the eighth and final play- off spot in the North East Conference, the Panthers are now eight points out with 20 games remaining in the regular season. The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they host Aurora at 6:30 p.m. at the Pickering Recreation Complex.
