There is a proposal for an expansion to the library. MOYA DILLON mdillon@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- As population growth continues, the Pickering Public Library is playing catch-up with a $14-million expansion plan. After a 2010 facilities master plan identified the library system was lacking 11,000 square feet in community space, based on a North American average of .6 square feet per capita, the library embarked on an expansion and renovation study, which recom- mends a 17,000 square foot expansion to the Central Library. “We often have to turn people away when they request public space or want to partner with the library to run programming,” said Cathy Grant, library CEO. RVHS met 98.2 per cent of the 2,025 standards set by Accreditation Canada during a survey conducted at the Ajax and Scarborough Centenary sites from Sept. 23 to 27. Four Accreditation Cana- da surveyors were on hand to analyze all of the hospital’s programs. “We are extremely pleased at these out- standing results and credit our hard- working team of staff, physicians and volunteers,” said Rik Ganderton, presi- dent and CEO of RVHS. “The award means that we are continu- ing to deliver the highest quality of care and patient safety to our patients, which is the goal of our strategic plan. While this is a fantastic result and evidence of our shared commitment to patient and staff safety, we know that there is always room for improvement. We will continue to relentlessly focus on achieving error- free service delivery.” Organizations go through a rigorous evaluation process to achieve accredita- tion. Accreditation Canada surveyors are experienced clinical and administrative leaders from other Canadian health care organizations. During the process they spoke with staff, management, physicians, patients, community partners and members of the RVHS board of directors, reviewed dozens of documents and performed direct observation in several depart- ments. RVHS was evaluated in categories including population focus, accessibility, safety, work life, client-centred services, continuity of services, effectiveness and efficiency. “The Accreditation Canada standards and required organizational practic- es help us to reflect on our own per- formance, this allows us to continue to work diligently to fulfill our commitment to providing the highest standard of care and safety for our patients,” said Karen Mayne, director of quality and profes- sional practice at RVHS. “At Rouge Valley we keep quality, safe patient care, and the patient’s experience at the forefront, and this has guided us in the right direc- tion.” The accreditation award will stand for three years; another accreditation sur- vey will be done in 2015. We often get complaints from people looking for quiet study areas too, because a lack of space means they have to use the same area as teens who are coming in to meet their friends or a group discussing a project.” The library is one of the top five most heavily used in Ontario, and boasted its highest-ever circulation numbers over the summer of 2012. Ms. Grant notes that while the price tag may seem high in a delicate economic environment, it can provide a good return on investment for taxpayer dollars. “There are lots of studies that show that for every dollar spent on libraries, you get an average of $4.5 in return, and we believe it’s more like $8,” Ms. Grant said, noting the library creates young readers, encourages school success, bridges the digital divide by providing Internet and other resources to those who otherwise may not be able to afford them, and cre- ates a place where the community can interact. “There’s definitely a social return on investment. We believe libraries are a good investment in the community,” she said. The two-storey addition would extend east from the current building and include a large auditorium facing onto Esplanade Park and a new street entrance on the South Esplanade. Also proposed are a basement facility for stor- ing historical archives, including docu- ments currently housed at the Archives of Ontario, and an atrium connecting the library with the Civic Complex, pro- viding joint public space for library and City use. The expansion is purposely being kept small so as not to encroach too much on Esplanade Park. The expansion would allow the library to adequately serve Pickering’s estimat- ed population up to 2031. Council voted in favour of including the design and construction costs for the project in the City’s five-year capi- tal forecast. Should funding for design and construction be approved in future budgets, Ms. Grant estimated construc- tion on the project could start as early as 2015. sabrina byrnes / metroland Pink glove treatment for cancer AJAX -- Staff members at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital are wearing pink gloves this month in honour of breast cancer awareness month. E., Whitby ON L1N 6A3 1-800-667-5671 www.durham.ca/waste I’ve heard your starting a curbside battery collection program. What exactly is this all about? The Region of Durham is pleased to introduce a new pilot program that will allow residents to set out their household batteries for curbside collection for one week in the fall and spring time. The program is aimed at removing used batteries from the waste stream by collecting and processing any reusable materials. This pilot program will provide a simple solution to managing used batteries with the convenience of semi-annual collection at the curb. Not only will the program remove this special waste material from landfill and incineration, but it will allow materials to be recovered and reused in other technologies. Collection will be provided twice a year, coinciding with the daylight savings time changes and promotion of changing batteries in smoke alarms. Due to regulatory requirements, only intact, single use, dry cell batteries are acceptable for curbside collection. Residents with damaged or leaking batteries or wet cell batteries (such as automotive) should place the batteries in a leak- proof container and deliver them to a Region Waste Management Depot for recycling. Brightly coloured, recyclable bags will be delivered to Durham households prior to the November collection, so watch for it. Batteries should be stored in these bags until curbside collection, scheduled on your regular collection day, the week of Nov.12 through 16 only. Residents who miss the collection date, or live in apartments or condominiums, are encouraged to visit www.makethedrop.ca to find the nearest battery recycling drop off location. In the end, pet owners especially will have to take greater care given that coyotes, like other animals that do well in urban environ- ments, are here to stay. Some people were disturbed recently when an Ajax resident shot pictures of a pair of coy- otes with a dead cat at the Ajax waterfront. It’s not uncommon to hear coyotes making a ruckus in north Ajax or Pickering. But while most of us get a thrill out of see- ing a deer in urban Ajax or Pickering, coyotes are a different story: they make people ner- vous, as these opportunistic predators regu- larly take cats and dogs. It doesn’t make them cruel or vicious, it’s just what they do. Attacks on people are rare since coyotes generally fear people. They do happen, however, most nota- bly when promising Toronto singer Taylor Mitchell, who had performed in Pickering, was attacked by two or three coyotes on Cape Breton Island in 2009 and died of her injuries. But a suggestion that local coyotes should be captured and transported elsewhere is unrealistic. It’s just not doable. And even if we could round up 10 or 20 coyotes in the area and ship them off some- where else, before long others would take their place. Stan Gehrt, an Ohio State University coyote expert, has been tracking Chicago’s coyote population for more than a decade. “The coyote is the test case for other ani- mals,” Mr. Gehrt said recently on mnn.com. “Raccoons, skunks, foxes -- they’ve already been able to penetrate the urban landscape pretty well. “The coyote is the most recent and largest. The jury’s out with what’s going to happen with the bigger ones.” Bigger ones? That’s right, Mr. Gehrt says wolves, moun- tain lions and bears might not be far behind the coyotes. Unlike coyotes, however, he said the larger predators would likely enter a city environ- ment for food and then retreat to the coun- try, not to set up house as coyotes do. We have to learn to live with coyotes since there’s no other alternative. If you’re a pet owner, that means keeping a watchful eye on your dog or cat. Keep your beloved pets on a leash and don’t let them roam -- or they might not make it home. -- Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser Are newspapers necessary in the age of social media when members of the public can spread information just as easily as a trained report- er can? I think that question got a definitive answer last week as the biggest breaking news story of the year unfolded in Oshawa. It started with news of a mysterious road closure in industrial Whitby and ended 27 hours later with the arrest of former Oshawa councillor Robert Lutczyk in connection with the kidnapping of Oshawa’s city solicitor. The hours in between served as a textbook lesson on how we gather news, what we report and when. Initially there was all kinds of social media speculation about the standoff, but police were keeping mum. Our reporters headed for the scene and turned to tra- ditional sources for more information. That’s when we were tipped off the Whitby standoff was relat- ed to the kidnapping of Oshawa’s city solicitor the night before. Once we had the information, we could confirm it on the record with Osha- wa’s mayor and we posted the story on our website and our social media accounts. The story spread like wildfire. What we didn’t do is name a sus- pect, though a name had been floated, as we didn’t have that confirmed. As the afternoon wore on, we contin- ued to work our sources until it was confirmed to us by former mayor John Gray that Mr. Lutczyk was the subject of the standoff. Mr. Gray was willing to go on the record and he was a credible source. We also had other sources who had said the same thing and we had confirmed a police presence at Mr. Lutczyk’s home. Again we broke the story and again it spread quickly via social media. Then we started seeing reports on Facebook that Mr. Lutczyk had killed himself. The source for the reports seemed to be a former Oshawa councillor. We again worked our sources but this time, we could not get the fact confirmed. Still, the news posted by the former councillor spread for hours. The police again kept mum and said no more than that there was no change in the standoff, refusing to even say that the suspect was still alive. And as readers prodded us to go public with the news of Mr. Lutczyk’s death we chose not to because we just weren’t comfortable. Turns out the reports of his death were greatly exaggerated and the standoff ended with an arrest. As a newspaper on one of our most challenging days we were able to work under that old slogan: get it first, but first get it right. -- Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every second Thursday in this space. Library wants help identifying people and places in photo archives PICKERING -- Put your detective skills to the test by helping the Pickering Public Library learn more about the photos in its local history archive. The Local History Room at the Pickering Cen- tral Library is home to a large collection of histor- ical photos dating back to the mid-1800s, many of which were donated with no identifying infor- mation attached. In an effort to find out more about the photos, library staff are asking for help from the public to shed light on some of the mysterious photos. Residents are invited to drop by the Local History Room, located on the second floor of the library, to view the photo collection and see if they rec- ognize anyone in the photos or might recognize places, events or time periods that could help staff learn more about the photos. The Local History Room is open during library hours, and photos from the collection can also be viewed online on the Pickering Ajax Digital Archive at www.pada.ca. However, your denturist is the most qualified person to tell you when a denture needs replacing. An annual consultation to have you prosthesis checked and cleaned can prevent many problems, among them the bad habits that denture wearers develop and that require adjustments, a new base, or even complete replacement. The following are signs that your prosthesis needs attention: it does not adhere to your gums as well as it used to, it is loose, does not cut food well, makes your face look older, has yellowed, or it causes discomfort or pain. There are also many other clinical problems with an old prosthesis that only your denturist would notice. Because he constructs your prosthesis himself, the denturist actually minimizes the impact of such changes. Thus, when replacement is indicated, he makes sure your new dentures conform to the changes that your face has undergone over time. All new dentures require an adjustment period, which is entirely normal. Your denturist can give you tips on how to shorten this adjustment period and make it easier. Remember that wearing dentures that are 10 or 15 years old inevitably causes change in you physiognomy that are often irreversible. The longer you delay replacing your dentures, the more your appearance and your comfort will be affected. These are changes that occur very gradually and without your really noticing. When was the last time you saw your denturist? Food allergies are on the rise in North America, and have doubled in the past 10 years according to some experts. A prevailing theory for the rise in food allergies is called the Hygiene Hypothesis. It reasons that modern hygiene and medicine in the western world have made our immune systems hypersensitive to harmless things because there is less disease to fight. According to Agriculture Canada, five to eight per cent of children and one to two per cent of adults are estimated to have true diagnosed food allergies. Health Canada estimates that about 1.8 million Canadians may be affected by food allergies and that some studies indicate these numbers are increasing, especially among young children. Common food allergens include gluten, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, mustard, sesame, egg, fish, soy and sulphites. Concerned food providers are stepping up to the plate. One company is now offering a whole line of deli meats with natural ingredients that are free of gluten and free of all other major food allergens. These meats contain no added preservatives beyond those that occur naturally. “Consumers are looking for simple food products that meet the dietary needs of the whole family, especially foods that are less processed, more natural, contain real ingredients and are great tasting,” says Rita Weigel, director of marketing at Ontario-based Piller's Fine Foods. “Our new deli meat line called Piller's Simply Free does meet these needs. The sliced meats, wieners, meat snacks, sausage, ham and breakfast strips are free of gluten and all other major food allergens.” Weigel adds that three of the new Simply Free products are also free of nitrite, and the entire line is available in grocery stores across the country. First, keep pets indoors, especially black cats around Hal- loween; there are some sick individuals who will hurt them. In fact, the Humane Society of Durham Region won’t even adopt them out at this time of year for that reason. Here are some do’s and don’ts from the Humane Society of Canada: DO keep pets indoors in a safe, comfortable, quiet location where they’re not afraid and cannot escape. Check on them frequently -- playing a television or radio can comfort them. DO keep pets away from Halloween decorations. DO ensure that pets always have effective identification. Visit humanesociety.com for a free pet ID, and info on its pet recovery team. DO take a pet suspected of ingesting a harmful item or sub- stance immediately to a veterinarian (Durham’s after-hours emergency clinic is at 1910 Dundas St. E., Whitby. Call ahead at 905-576-3031). DON’T allow pets to eat any treats and educate children not to give candy to pets –- chocolate and other candies can be toxic to pets, and wrappers can be harmful if swallowed. DO educate others about looking out for pets and other ani- mals at Halloween. DON’T dress animals up in costumes as many pets find this uncomfortable and stressful. DON’T leave pets outdoors during Halloween. DON’T take pets trick-or-treating. If you must, ensure they have ID and are safely on a leash. DON’T let animals near candles and other danger- ous items often around at Halloween. DON’T ignore animals in need. Report animal abuse and neglect (call Durham Humane Society at 905-665- 7430). It says don’t dress up pets, but I know some people can’t resist. If you must, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, make sure the costume: isn’t annoying or unsafe; doesn’t have small pieces they could choke on; doesn’t get caught on anything; and it does not constrict your pet’s movement or hearing, or impede their ability to breathe, bark or meow. Make sure they try on costumes before Hal- loween, and if they don’t like it, don’t force it. Happy, safe pets at Halloween> RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND WHITBY -- George, a black cat who’s handsome...and then some. MARGARET CARNEY Surely you’ve noticed -- juncos are back! All those small slate-grey birds on your lawn that flash white outer tail feathers when they flit away are moving down from northern forests, pushed by cool- er temperatures and lon- ger nights. Ground-feeding seed eaters, juncos may hang around Durham Region all winter, familiar visitors under feeders, until they vanish north once more in May. It’s a poignant pleasure to see them again. Who celebrates harbin- gers of winter? Great numbers of white-throat- ed sparrows are moving through as well. Some days woodlots and treed yards are alive with them, scratching in the leaf litter and fly- ing ahead when you’re out for a walk. They’re not singing much now, not like they were short months ago throughout cottage country, those haunting whistled “Oh Canada Canada Can- ada” notes ringing from the woods on a quiet eve- ning.Hermit thrushes aren’t singing, either, as they move through. I was delighted, as always, to find one in our yard, on the ground under the lilacs, a plain grey-brown bird with a rusty tail not as bright now as in spring plumage. While some juncos and white-throats will linger here, most hermit thrush- es are bound for the southern states, though one was found on a Christmas Bird Count at Corbett Creek Marsh in Whitby last year. One chilly, showery day a week ago, when the wind was from the north, every tree in our yard was alive with tiny birds -- a big flock of woodland songbirds following a cold front. Most were king- lets, calling to each other with lispy voices as they fluttered around twigs and branches, gleaning insects and spider eggs. I caught a bright yellow flash as a golden-crowned kinglet dipped upside down to snatch a bug. There were still too many leaves to ID any of the warblers in the mixed flock, but the red-breasted nuthatches were unmistak- able, climbing along tree trunks and fussing as they collected winged white pine seeds scattered about. They’ve been leaving Ontario in droves all fall, due to a very poor crop of evergreen cones throughout northeastern forests. The most vocal migrants of all recently seem to be pine siskins, brown-streaked little birds the size and shape of goldfinches, which make a rising “zeeeeep” call very much like goldfinches occa- sionally do. My husband heard them flying over several days in a row when he was out repairing our sun porch roof in mid-October. These north- erners, too, are moving in search of evergreen cones, as are purple finches, which I heard the other day while I was walking along the Water- front Trail. Both would be attracted to feeders with nyger or black oil sunflower seeds. A neighbour heard evening grosbeaks fly over, looked up and counted 11 of these increasingly scarce big-billed finches. I wish I had been there! Nature queries: mcarney@interlinks.net or 905-725-2116. Caddy hooked up with PGA star at the perfect time BRIAN MCNAIR bmcnair@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- So many things in life, both good and bad, come down to a matter of timing. Consider the timing Scott Vail has had in his caddying career to be about as good as it gets. Vail, a 36-year-old Oshawa resident, hooked up with Brandt Snedeker during the 2006 Nationwide Tour golf season, a decision that likely wasn’t so easy at the time, but looks absolutely brilliant in hind- sight. Snedeker, a 31-year-old native of Nash- ville, Tennessee, just capped a season for the ages, winning the final event of the PGA playoffs, the tour championship, and with it, taking the FedExCup title and a $10-million bonus to boot. And while Vail didn’t get into the specif- ics of his financial agreement with Snede- ker, he admitted that his cut of the prize- winnings -- Snedeker has made an addi- tional $4,989,739 this year, behind only Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods -- is more than many golfers on the tour have made. “Yeah I think you’re right, shocking- ly,” Vail admitted, when the question was posed. “I mean it’s crazy. I’ve still got to pinch myself that you can make that much money, but it’s crazy how much they make as well. It’s just bizarre how much money is involved with it, but I’m very fortunate, very thankful. “Brandt takes very good care of me, so I was quite elated to see him win the FedEx- Cup for more reasons than one,” he said. “I’m not going to get into the details of what he’s paying me, but he’s as generous as anybody is on the PGA tour, so I’m very fortunate.” Vail was long ago the caddy for fellow Oshawa native Derek Gillespie, who has never lived up to the potential he had shown in college. Vail worked events with Snedeker in New Zealand and Australia at the start of the 2006 Nationwide season, and the two immediately hit it off, but he returned to caddy for Jason Enloe, whom he had been with the previous season. However, when Snedeker inquired about his availability again a few months later, he wisely signed on the dotted line. Together, they won two events that sea- son and graduated to the PGA tour, where they have been ever since. In six seasons, Snedeker has won four PGA titles, earned $16,098,223 and is now ranked ninth in the world. “A lot of this job is about timing, so it was good timing for sure, there’s no doubt,” Vail says of joining forces with Snedeker. “We had a good connection on the golf course. He obviously liked the work that I did for him and my personality, and I knew he was good, really good. We had immediate success right away. That always helps for your relationship.” The relationship has never waned, in good part due to the success they’ve had, but also because of the character of both. Vail says that the impression one gets of Snedeker through the eye of the camera, that of a down-to-earth, good-natured southern boy, is the real deal. “He’s very driven and very determined, but he’s a great family man,” Vail said of Snedeker, who married his college sweet- heart and just welcomed his second child on Sunday. “What you see is what you get with him on the TV. There’s no sugarcoat- ing anything. He’s exactly like that in real life.” Snedeker’s profile has never been higher than down the stretch of this season, when he played himself into contention for the FedExCup with a tremendous playoff per- formance, and was one of five in the run- ning for the big prize heading into the tour championship. Needing to win outright, he did just that, and in convincing fashion, break- ing a final-round tie with Justin Rose with a two-under-round of 68 and finishing at 10 under for the tournament, three better than Rose, the runner-up. And he managed all that despite play- ing with a heavy heart, as his coach’s son was involved in a near-fatal car accident in Florida a couple of weeks earlier. Vail, however, pointed out that may have been more beneficial than detrimental to Snedeker. “I guess all kinds of cliches come out, but it certainly does put things into per- spective that golf at the end of the day is just a game, and I know they’re playing for a lot of money, and I guess in essence so am I, but I would give every penny from that weekend to have Brandt’s coach’s son well,” said Vail. “There was a focus on Brandt’s coach and his son, and thoughts and prayers with them, so I know for sure it helped us kind of be calm all weekend when we were in the middle of a chase for obviously a significant tournament.” Snedeker had a chance to complete a dream season when he made his first appearance at the Ryder Cup in Illinois, but instead was part of an infamous col- lapse by the United States team at Medi- nah on the final day. There are still a cou- ple of other events on the 2012 calendar, but both Snedeker and Vail are enjoying some much earned downtime. For Vail, that means returning home to Oshawa and his mom, Sylvia, whom he calls “biggest supporter imaginable.” SUBMITTED PHOTO LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND -- Oshawa caddy Scott Vail, left, discussed strate- gy with PGA golfer Brandt Snedeker during the 2012 Open Championship in England. TORONTO – The Durham Lords earned a silver medal at the OCAA women’s fastball championships over the weekend. The Lords had a shot at gold, but the Humber Hawks defeated two-time defend- ing champion Lords 8-3 in the final. It was Humber’s second win over Dur- ham in as many days, following a 3-1 win that sent the Hawks to the gold medal con- test. Durham advanced with a 7-4 victory over the eventual bronze medalist St. Clair Saints. Finishing the season with silver medal, Durham extends its medal streak at the OCAA championship to 16 seasons and with 29 medals overall, has the most of any college in league history. In the championship game, Humber got things going early with three runs in the first, though Durham responded quickly with a pair to remain in the game. Still 3-2 into the fifth, Humber struck for two runs to go back up by three. Trying to bounce back, the Lords added one more run, but that was as close it would get. Humber continued to roll and built up a commanding five-run lead en route to the win. Durham’s Samantha Bryant-Officer was named the tournament’s top bat- ter. Among the tournament all-stars were Ajax’s Melissa Semeniuk and Lords team- mate Jessica Pike of Whitby. Humber avenged a 7-1 loss to Durham in the OCAA championship final last year. St. Mary still undefeated in Tier Two senior football OSHAWA -- The tier one senior football season took a turn for the more interesting last week, as Whitby’s Donald A.
