MOYA DILLON mdillon@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Remaining veterans of Canada’s Merchant Navy have no problem keeping the memory of their time on the seas alive, but fear a future when no members will be left to safeguard that history. During a meeting of the League of Merchant Mariners Veterans of Canada at Scarborough’s Highland Creek Legion, area veter- ans shared their stories of time spent ferrying supplies across the ocean at the height of the Second World War. “I was 15 when I signed up as a galley boy for pilot boats,” recalls Pickering’s Allen MacIsaac, director of the league. “I used to see the big ships coming in damaged and I wanted to be a part of it, so I joined a big ship and by the time my parents knew about it I was in England.” After fighting for veterans’ rights, Durham Merchant Mariners now fighting not to be forgotten> See PICKERING page 7 Top Wages Paid 1-800-465-0593 Ext. 305 Great Part Time Job (Vehicle Required) APPLYNOW Call After 4:00 pm NOW HIRING Central Air From Compass Home Services 1885 Clements Rd., Unit 204, Pickering www.compasshomeservices.ca ENJOYCOOL COMFORTTHIS SUMMER! *Call fordetails905-428-8899 A Month *$54.99 Save instantly with coupons available in-store on a number of energy-efficient products at participating retailers. It’s one of the greatest losses. My husband has been here all his life ... People who have been lifelong friends of my husband don’t speak and cross the road if they see you coming. That silly stuff that hap- pens in a small town,” said Gail Kenney, who has lived on Wolfe Island for more than 40 years. She’s been called a radical, wire-cutter, and NIMBY (not-in-my-backyard) for her anti- turbine stance. With two proposed wind farms planned for Clarington, Metroland Media Group’s Dur- ham Region Division travelled to the small Lake Ontario island off the coast of Kingston where the second largest wind farm in Cana- da is operating. It’s a farm community where it’s hard to find anyone who is not touched by the green ener- gy development -- either hosting a turbine, affiliated with someone hosting turbines or living next to turbines. Ken White’s family has lived on Wolfe Island for five generations. He has four turbines on the land he raises cattle on. “I thought it was a good idea from the start. Wind has been around for generations and generations. Nothing is freer than wind,” said Mr. White. “There are always complaints but some people will complain no matter what.” Mayor Dennis Doyle said the Frontenac Islands council (which includes Wolfe Island) has decided not take a position on the wind turbines. He was elected after the approval was given for the wind farm and was there to negotiate the details of the deal. “We went through a lot of difficulties. It did cause a lot of strife in the community. A lot of bad feelings. It does that wherever it goes in,” said Mayor Doyle. The Wolfe Island wind farm was approved before the provincial Green Energy Act, which took control of these projects out of the hands of municipalities. There was no 550-metre setback rule. The closest turbine is 450 metres from a home. The Township, like many municipalities, was struggling for tax revenue and that’s real- ly what drove the initiative, explained Mayor Doyle. Wolfe Island gets $640,000 a year from the company in an amenities agreement. The municipality was able to put in a hockey rink with donated labour from the turbine con- struction crews. New rules mean Clarington won’t have an amenities agreement with the companies proposing wind farms here. Clarington will only get approximately $1,700 per turbine, roughly $25,5000 for 15 turbines, in property taxes. Non-farming jobs are hard to come by on Wolfe Island. There was once a Kraft cheese plant, but it closed in 2000. The turbines brought 400 construction jobs and 12 perma- nent jobs, plus some maintenance work. It’s at least 12 fewer people taking the ferry into Kingston each morning for work. “It is a large benefit to Wolfe Island. I worked construction for over 25 years and had to take the ferry and drive all over Ontario. This job came up and I jumped on it,” said Bill Joy, lead wind technician for Transalta Wolfe Island wind facility. Others on Wolfe Island feel there has been too high a cost for the wind turbines. Gail and Ed Kenney said years later they still have sleep disturbances and ringing in their ears and they suspect low-frequency vibra- tion from the turbines is to blame. “We’ve had four to six years of anger because of social injustice. Because it hasn’t been righted or mitigated in any way, we continue to live with this. If you live with the amount of anger we’ve lived with at this point for four to six years, there’s no doubt health is impacted,” said Ms. Kenney, who chaired an anti-turbine group called Wolfe Island Residents for the Environment, which has since folded. There is no clear consensus on whether wind turbines cause adverse health impacts. Winds of change for Durham Blowing concerns Jen O’Meara / MetrOland WOLFE ISLAND -- Farmer Ken White’s raises cattle and has four turbines on his land. ‘‘We went through a lot of difficulties. It did cause a lot of strife in the community. A lot of bad feelings. It does that wherever it goes in.’ Mayor Dennis Doyle > fast facts Issues with the Wolfe Island wind farm Property values Gail and Ed Kenney said the wind farm has lowered property values in the area and several properties have been on the market for three or four years without selling. Ken White said property values didn’t go down on Wolfe Island, and thinks the extra income from the turbines would be a selling feature for someone interested in buying a farm. “Even those who sold during the con- struction, it sold in four or five days and they got their asking price.” Mayor Dennis Doyle said it’s still too soon to tell if there is an impact on property values. Land doesn’t change hands very often on the small island, where farms are in the same fam- ily for generations. Light up the night Mayor Dennis Doyle said the main ongo- ing complaint he gets from residents is about the blinking red lights on the top of the turbines to warn off low-flying airplanes. He said more modern turbines can have lights that activate only when an aircraft is approaching, but Transport Canada said the lights had to stay. “Our friends in Kingston refer to us now as the red light district,” said Mayor Doyle. Bird kills Wolfe Island has a high number of water- fowl that gather offshore during the spring migration and supports important landbird populations, including wintering raptors and tree swallows. BirdLife International considers the island an important bird area. Since the wind turbines became opera- tional, third party surveyors run a monitoring program to see what impact the turbines are having on the birds and bats. In 2010, 6.5 birds were killed per wind turbine on Wolfe Island. From Jan. 1 to June 30, 2011, there were 31 bird carcasses (and seven bat carcasses) found near the turbines, which translates to 1.72 birds per turbine. Scientific studies have found no direct impacts but world wide, neighbours of turbines complain of similar symptoms. Mayor Doyle said he hopes an upcom- ing federal health study on the issue will put the concerns to rest -- one way or another -- so Wolfe Island can move for- ward together. “Some people were so concerned and when it became obvious it was going ahead no matter what ... There is some (community) healing that will never hap- pen in this generation,” said Mayor Doyle. “Some families were broken up over it. There’s a divide in the community.” WAtch the video story @ durhamregion.com Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 0 , 2 0 1 2 du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 0 , 2 0 1 2 4 AP ACADEMY OF DEFENSIVE DRIVING Group Discounts Available (for 3 or more) Mini Package Available An Installment Payment Plan For Yo ur Convenience Beginner Driver Education Course Provider CALL NOW, SPACE IS LIMITED HOURS: 7 DAYS A WEEK, 10 AM -10 PM PETER’S •20 hours in classroom instruction •10 private in-car lessons on automatic •FREE pick-up at home •Courses start every week •Defensive driving instruction Learn Life Saving Skills •Skid Control Evasive Maneuvers •Braking Te chniques •FREE progress report card •EARLIER ROAD TEST TRAIN WITH THE PROFESSIONALS! 965 Dundas St.W. It’s hard to believe this issue has dragged on for more than a decade and there’s still not adequate coverage by the public alert- ing sirens in Pickering. If a disaster was to occur at the Pickering station, especially in the middle of the night, some residents would be unaware of it and as a result their lives would be in even greater danger. Durham Region is responsible for all off-site nuclear emergency planning for Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington and Pickering nuclear generating stations. As part of that planning, the Region must ensure a public alerting system exists in a three-kilometre zone around the station. The idea is that every resident in that zone, whether it’s noon or midnight, whether they’re indoors or outdoors, can hear the siren and be instantly aware there’s trouble. A Region-commissioned study in 2001 recommended 29 sirens in Pickering. But the City balked at that number and hired its own consultant, who recommended four. After they were installed, and it was deter- mined the coverage area was inadequate, five more sirens were installed in Pickering. But testing showed it still wasn’t enough. “Right now some people in Pickering would not hear the siren,” says Ivan Ciuci- ura, the Region’s director of emergency management. “We’re not in compliance... We don’t have sound coverage of sufficient strength to cover the area.” A Region-hired consultant in two weeks is to deliver a final report on how many more sirens are needed in Pickering. In 2006, Mayor Dave Ryan said of the four sirens, “This is a happy medium between public safety and nuisance. We have been told that these four locations will give us the coverage that is required.” Of course it wasn’t enough. Councillor Jennifer O’Connell recently stated, “We want the residents to be safe, but we don’t think the community should be overrun with these sirens. They give a fearful impression.” The safety talk one hears before a flight might also give “a fearful impression.” As might the life preservers and lifeboats on ships. But safety comes before how they look and the impression they give. It’s time for Pickering to stop worrying about appear- ances and put the safety of its residents first. Not some of them, not most of them, but every man, woman and child in the city. Durham author’s debut novel really is hot off the press When I was talking to Ruth Walker on Monday morning, she was eagerly awaiting a spe- cial delivery -- copies of her debut novel, Liv-ing Underground, from her publisher. It’s her first published novel and it will be in stores soon. For the Whitby resident, the book has been a long time in the making. When she was about 12 or 13 years old, she lived with her family in Scarborough. Their house had a basement apartment and one of the tenants was an immi- grant of German descent. Ruth helped her mom with light housekeeping in the apartment and was struck at how barren it was. No personal effects, no books, no pictures, his shoes were lined up in military order. “He clung to my imagination,” she said. In the early 1990s, she used that imagination and started to write a short story based on him. But the story just kept growing until she had a novel-sized manuscript. It went into a drawer, came back out, went back in and so on over the years. Years later, Ruth brought that book about relationships and family secrets out again and reworked it. It went to and came back from a number of publishers, sometimes with words of encouragement, but always with a rejection letter, until it found its home with Seraphim Editions. Now, after almost a year of polishing and edits, it’s about to hit book stores, includ- ing Uxbridge’s Blue Heron where Ruth will hold an invitation-only Durham launch in October. Ruth is well-known in local and literary circles. She was one of the founding editors of the renowned literary magazine, Lichen, now on hiatus while its editors do some writ- ing of their own. And she’s also a member of the Writers’ Community of Durham Region and runs writing workshops. She also co-authored The Inspiration Station, about using creative thinking, with Gwen Scheltema. Her book, which I am looking forward to reading, will be available in book stores everywhere. If you’re looking for good used books at good prices, check out Friends of the Oshawa Public Library annual book sale, starting today and run- ning through Sunday at the Bagot Street branch of Oshawa Public Libraries. The sale begins each day at 10 a.m. and ends today at 7:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. the other three days. Christy Chase is a copy editor at Metroland Media Group Durham Region Division. Fellow veteran Ray Cameron is haunted by those same memories, particularly an Ameri- can Liberty ship that was hit while travelling directly ahead of his boat. “Sailors were jumping into the sea to escape the inferno,” he recalls, saying he still wonders what happened to those men all these years later. “You couldn’t stop in a convoy,” he explains. “You never knew if you’d be the next one to get hit.” About 15 veterans and relatives are gath- ered at the Legion, down markedly from last year’s meeting. Mr. MacIsaac fears that in another year there may not be enough mem- bers left for a full meeting. “Canada doesn’t have any merchant ships left,” Mr. MacIsaac explained, noting that Merchant Navy mem- bers weren’t even offi- cially recognized as vet- erans until the 1990s, which means they missed out on vital ben- efits and job opportuni- ties after the war. “We weren’t treated as veterans for 50 years, and soon we won’t have any veterans left to tell our stories. We’re con- cerned when we go, the history of the Mer- chant Navy will go into the archives. We want to tell the story of how essential we were dur- ing the war.” By taking cargo including grain and gener- al foodstuffs, equipment such as planes and tanks, and even gasoline across the Atlantic to Britain and overseas troops, the Merchant Navy ensured the war effort could continue. Indeed, Winston Churchill once said the Ger- man U-boat peril was his greatest fear dur- ing the war, knowing that if supplies could not get through Brit- ain would not be able to continue the fight. “If we hadn’t got- ten supplies across we never would have won the war,” said Mr. Cameron, who remembers his time in the Merchant Navy fondly, despite the risks, which were many. “I’m sure glad we didn’t miss it, but I wouldn’t do it again.” Oshawa’s David Dunn says he “only remem- bers the good times,” describing the experi- ence of being stationed in London on VE Day as a memory that he will never forget. “Seeing all the crowds there for the Olym- pics really brought it all back,” he said, noting the league offers a good opportunity for fel- low veterans to gather and share stories. “It was best time of my life, the best years.” Mr. Dunn said he would like to see a little more recognition for the Merchant Navy. “We’re the forgotten,” he explained. “We supplied the armies and food for England; I just want people to remember what it repre- sented.” Jack Stapleton, who served on a tanker ship hauling fuel from south America to Maine, and remained a sailor after the war on what- ever vessel he could find, made some strides toward ensuring recognition with his cam- paign to have Sept. 3 proclaimed Merchant Navy Day. “I figure somebody should recog- nize us,” he said. “I want people to know what really happened, all those 15-year-old guys out there, risking everything to bring these supplies. I just hope they don’t forget us.” PICKERING from page 1 Pickering Merchant Mariner recalls perils of crossing the Atlantic (Ont. The No Wrong Door program will help local families navi- gate the dizzying array of services available for children up to age 12 -- everything from specialized child care to different types of therapy. “We hope this will make things a lot easier for families,” says Melissa Beaucaire, a program manager with Resources for Exceptional Children and Youth Durham. “We wanted to make a system where, whatever the initial point of contact is, there is a pathway to get the family to a service that can help them.” In 2011 a group of local agencies got together to apply for provincial funding for the project. They were approved and started work last fall with the help of a consultant. No Wrong Door is expected to be fully implemented this winter. The project will see 650 specialized binders distributed to schools, child care centres, libraries and community agencies across Durham. Information will include common paperwork to help quick- ly refer families between agencies and resource guides that outline which agencies offer which services, and how families can access funding. “It’s very exciting, this is a really good tool,” says Sheila McQuaid, a manager with the Children’s Services Division at the Region of Durham. “If a family walks into a rec centre...or any of these other places, this means staff there can get the ball rolling.” Ms. McQuaid says the program will be especially useful when it comes to training new staff. Cones are ripe, and red squirrels are at work far out on the tips of the branches, snip- ping them off with their sharp teeth. Every once in a while they drop one, and it plunges 100 feet to the needle-strewn paths far below. Walkers beware. Lucky for humans, the sticky brown cones are light and bouncy. Grey squirrels, too heavy to climb out on the twigs to reach the cones, soon take possession of any cone a red squirrel drops. Resulting squirrel wars lead to lots of activity as the bushy-tailed rodents scurry about, snatching and collect- ing. With few acorns produced by the local red oaks this year, pine seeds are their main source of food at the moment. Unlike most evergreens, white pine seeds take two years to mature. Last year’s crop of spruce, balsam, cedar and tamarack cones is just a pleasant memory to hungry rodents now, but at least they have white pine seeds to feed on. The cones start to open in late summer, showering the woods with fat little seeds with an inch-long sail. They’re manna from heaven for white-footed mice and chipmunks, which cache them away for winter. Meadow voles just enjoy the bonanza, and have more babies. Lots of food for them means lots of food for the great horned owls come January. Mammals aren’t the only creatures drawn to the feast. Families of nuthatches, both red and white-breasted, can be heard fussing at each other high in the pine branches. Blue jays eat pine seeds, and many stop in for a meal as they migrate west along the lakeshore. In centuries past, before European settlement, towering white pines stretched across all of southern Ontario. What we know as the Oak Ridges Moraine used to be called the Great Pine Ridge, until loggers cut all the giants. With its tall pines “saved” for masts for the British Royal Navy, Thickson’s Woods became an island surround- ed by settlement -- farms, then towns and industries. Come step back into nature as early settlers knew it, this Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Thickson’s Woods Nature Reserve in Whitby. Wildlife experts leading tours during the 11th annual Birds, Beavers and Butterflies Festival will point out where migrating monarchs rest as they await the right winds to carry them on to Mexico, and where red squirrels forage for cones overhead. Ospreys and eagles may be soaring over the meadow, where a host of exciting festival events will take place: endangered animal and “creepy critter” shows, nature crafts, insect explorations and bird banding, geology ID, and even a real live magician. A bake sale, silent auction and modest entrance fees help raise funds for the future protection of Thickson’s Woods. But it’s sad to think that not all dogs have a loving home, and many end up in shelters for various reasons. Thank goodness for organizations like the Humane Society of Durham Region or the Animal Guardian Soci- ety for example, which rescue abused and neglected animals, provide food, shelter, and medical care, and try to find a good home for them. But, as well as they’re treated in these shelters, these dogs need a home where they can be master of their domain, greet their families when they get home at the end of the day and sleep in a favourite spot when it’s time to relax. That’s why I want to let people know about the Pedigree Adoption Drive Campaign, an annual fund- raiser that shows that shelter dogs are good dogs, and empowers Canadians to help them by adopting, volunteer- ing and donating. By the end of this year’s campaign, it will have donat- ed more than $1 million to animal shelters across Canada since it was launched in 2008. This year Pedigree will donate up to $5,000 to the Dur- ham Humane Society. The campaign goes until the end of November. Pedi- gree will donate a portion of each spe- cially marked dry food for dogs that is sold until the end of November, up to $150,000. Pedigree also has information at mypedigree.ca/adoption about the important steps pet parents should take before adopting a shelter dog. To see the dogs at the Humane Soci- ety, like Little Joe, visit humanedur- ham.com. Fundraisers Support the Humane Society of Durham Region by stopping by the second annual Motorcity Mitsubishi Charity Car Wash and Barbecue on Sept. 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 1536 Dundas St. E., Whitby. There will also be an adoption drive and Mattie Magnets available. HARDCORE BOOTCAMPS is hosting Mass Beach Bootcamp to also support the Dur- ham Humane Society Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. It’s a minimum donation of $5. Take a yoga mat or towel, a lot of water and friends. It’ll take place at Lakeview Park at the foot of Simcoe Street in Oshawa. > DURHAM -- The Pedigree Adoption Drive Campaign encourages Canadians to help homeless dogs in need by volunteering, donating or adopting a shelter dog, such as Little Joe, an Australian shepherd mix who is currently awaiting his for- ever home at the Humane Society of Durham Region. GeorGe Lue-FonG Gun violence a ‘plague’: Court of Appeal JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Ontario’s appeal court has reduced the prison sentence given to a man involved in a 2007 shoot- ing in Ajax, finding a judge erred in exceeding the term recommended by the Crown. At the same time, however, the Court of Appeal rejected arguments that Christopher Jones ought to be treated with lenience because he was relatively young at the time of the incident, which left the victim with serious injuries. “The criminal use of firearms is a plague on the life of the Greater Toronto Area,” Justices James C. MacPherson, Robert P. Armstrong and David Watt said in a written ruling released Monday. “Those who are disposed to engage in this kind of criminal activity have to get the message that they will ultimately come face to face with the full force of the law and, in the result, will be sent to penitentiary for a long period of time,” the justices wrote. Mr. Jones and his co-accused, Malcolm Chalmers, were in the midst of a trial in Oshawa in 2010 when they suddenly pleaded guilty to charges including aggravated assault, kidnapping and using a firearm during the commission of an indictable offence. The two Toronto residents admitted they abducted a man at gunpoint and demanded he lure their target from his residence on Shoal Point Road; that man sustained severe leg inju- ries when gunfire erupted. Superior Court Justice Alfred Stong sentenced Mr. Jones to 10 years, one year more than the term suggested by the Crown. Mr. Jones was given credit for time in custody prior to his conviction, leaving him with six years to serve in peniten- tiary. (Mr. Chalmers, who at the time of sentencing was serving time for an unrelated shooting, was sentenced to an additional 11 years in jail.) Following a hearing Sept. 6 in Toronto, the appeal court justices agreed with two arguments put forth on Mr. Jones’s behalf: that Justice Stong erred in giving him less than the customary two-for- one credit for pretrial custody, and that the 10-year term exceeded the nine years recommended by the Crown. Justice Stong offered no expla- nation for imposing the lengthier term, the appeal court noted. Mr. Jones’s sentence was reduced to nine years and his credit for “dead time” was enhanced. The finding means his time left to be served is reduced to three and a half years from the time of sentencing in June 2010. While the appeal court ruled in Mr. Jones’s favour, they rejected his argument that his relative youth -- he and Mr. Chalmers were in their early 20s at the time of the trial -- ought to have resulted in a lighter sentence. “Denunciation and deterrence are the primary objectives of sen- tencing in this kind of case,” the ruling read. Jail term reduced for man convicted of Ajax shooting>JILLIan FoLLErT jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Durham’s energy- from-waste facility may be a done deal -- but that doesn’t mean the time for public input is over. That’s the message some mem- bers of the energy from waste- waste management advisory com- mittee are hoping will reach local residents. The committee was created to give members of the public and stakeholders a way to monitor progress on the incinerator project and liaise with the Region. Its nine volunteer members are appointed by regional council and Clarington council and are able to make recommendations to the Region’s works committee. Despite intense public scrutiny when approval of the incinerator was being debated by politicians, interest appears to be fading. At the most recent commit- tee meeting on Sept. 12 only one member of the public showed up -- and didn’t speak. “With all the hype and controversy surrounding the incinerator issue, I’m surprised people aren’t participating. This is the public’s chance to really be involved,” says committee member Marven Whidden. “A lot of people want to complain, but they don’t want to do anything about it.” The committee meets quarter- ly to talk about everything from construction and operation of the incinerator, to waste management issues. The next committee meet- ing is Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at Region of Durham Headquar- ters, 605 Rossland Rd. E. in Whitby. Durham incinerator committee urges more public participation SportsSports Brad Kelly- Sports Editor • bkelly@durhamregion.com Aidan Wallace scores twice in 4-2 victory SHAWN CAYLEY scayley@durhamregion.com LINDSAY -- For Mike Galati and the Pickering Panthers, things couldn’t have worked out any better Tuesday night. After his team’s first four games, Galati and his staff recognized some issues that needed to be straightened out and chief among them was finding a way to avoid being slow out of the gate. So on Monday the team held a meeting to address the issue and some 24 hours later, Galati saw a much different Panthers outfit in a 4-2 victory on the road over the Lindsay Muskies. “It’s a huge win, obviously. Any time you can go on the road and get a win in a build- ing like this is huge,” Galati said, standing outside the visitors’ dressing room at the Lindsay Recreation Complex. “The first four games of the year, our first 10 minutes of games were horrible. We had a meeting (Monday) and got everything out on the table and it was a big difference (Tuesday) for sure.” Dylan Hutton got things going in the first, converting on a pretty passing play with the man advantage less than seven minutes in. Pickering carried that lead into the second before Robert Lepine doubled it with a power-play marker of his own, beating Lindsay’s Tanner Davis down low for a 2-0 Panthers lead. “We got up early, which was a change,” added a seemingly relieved Galati. “The boys aren’t used to playing up two goals, they’re usually used to playing down two goals.” The two-goal lead was, however, short- lived. Some five minutes after Lepine’s mark- er, the Panthers had a prime opportunity to jump ahead with another goal, but a misplay at the other end from goaltender Spencer Bacon spoiled that. Off a Muskies dump-in, he tried to play the puck around the end boards from the corner to an open defender, but bounced it off the side of the net and before he could get back, Lindsay captain Dean Klomp corralled the loose puck and dumped it into the empty cage. Full credit to the Panthers, though, as despite the fact Lindsay was able to bounce back later and tie the game up, they did their part in picking up their oth- erwise solid goaltender and collecting a much-needed win. “A goal like that last year would have been the end of the game right there. They would come back and we don’t see a W here,” explained Galati. “It’s just a different bunch of guys. I keep telling everyone it’s a different attitude, from the dressing room out it’s a bunch of good kids and we’re pretty happy right now.” Just over two minutes after Lindsay tied it in the third, Aidan Wallace put the Pan- thers back on top converting a Jeff Heard pass in front of the net for the eventual game winner, while adding an insurance tally into an empty net with 20 seconds to go. As good a spirit as the club finds itself in now, it is facing a tough weekend ahead with a pair of games, both at home, start- ing Friday against Kingston followed by a return match with the Muskies Sunday night. The Scoop Matt Galati and Andrew McCann each had two assists in the win and continue to lead the way with 11 points each ... Spen- cer Bacon made 39 saves in the victory, including 20 in the first period, according to pointstreak.com ... Jeff Heard has points in all three games since coming over in a trade with Newmarket last week ...Robert Lepine’s goal was his first as a Panther and it came against a Lindsay team he played briefly for last season ... Friday’s game is a 7:30 p.m. start and Sunday’s puck drops at 6:30. Panthers double Muskies RON PIETRONIRO / METROLAND PICKERING -- Jeff Heard of the Pickering Panthers, shown lining up a shot on Stouffville Spirit goalie Gianluca Palmieri during Friday’s home game, had an assist in Lindsay on Tuesday night in a 4-2 win over the Muskies. Ones 2 Watch Four off to national soccer finals DURHAM -- Four girls from Durham Region will represent Ontario at the U18 Canadian National Championships for women’s soccer in Sydney, Nova Scotia from Oct. 3-8. Cassandra Sribny and Alessia Marzilli, who attend St. Marys CSS in Pickering, Tamara Brown, who attends Donald A. Wilson in Whitby, and Mackenzie Brauer, who attends Pickering HS in Ajax, all living in Durham Region, will represent the province of Ontar- io. The Canadian National Championships are represented at the U14, U16, and U18 age groups. The four girls competed in the Ontario Cup Championship U17 game at the OSA in Vaughan on Sept. 9. Their No. 1 ranked team in the province, the Richmond Hill Raiders, won by a score of 2-0 versus the No. 2 ranked Ajax Strikers. Brown scored the second goal of the game for Richmond Hill to secure the lead and the victory. For two of the players, Sribny and Mar- zilli, this is their second time representing Ontario at the Canadian National Champion- ships. Sribny won her first Canadian National Championship title last season in Lethbridge, Alberta when she played for the Erin Mills Mighty Eagles U16 team representing Ontar- io. This season she played for Richmond Hill, where she is the only 1995 born female player to win back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012 at the 1995 age group at the Ontario Cup Cham- pionships in women’s soccer. Marzilli won her first Canadian National Championship title at U14 when she played for the Ajax Strikers representing Ontario, which was hosted in Nova Scotia three years ago. This is the second Ontario Cup Champi- onship title for Marzilli. For Brown and Brauer, this is their first Ontario Cup Championship title, which was well deserved. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 0 , 2 0 1 2 16 AP > Ajax Ice Waves holding free tryouts AJAX -- The Ajax Ice Waves are holding free tryouts for the beginner program on Saturday, Sept. 22 and 29 at the Ajax Com- munity Centre. League commissioner David Branch, speaking on a conference call Wednes- day afternoon to kick off the 2012-13 season, announced changes to the rules around fighting in his league, and says they are designed to eradicate one-dimensional players who serve little pur- pose but to drop the gloves. The new rule will see play- ers able to fight up to 10 times this season without repercussion, however, from fight’s 11-15 players will be slapped with a two-game suspension for each fight and from 16 on, in addition to the two-game ban per altercation, the player’s team will also be subjected to a $1,000 fine by the league. This rule change is the most recent in a long line of revisions the league has made in recent years to its rules surrounding fighting. “This next step we see as part of the evolution of addressing needless fight- ing and the like in our game. We’ve chosen through the work of our competitions committee to look at fighting you might say from the top down and to really address what some people might call that player who is one dimensional and maybe doesn’t have the necessary well-rounded skill-set to play in a league like the Ontar- io Hockey League,” Branch stated as part of a question- and-answer period during the conference call. A study done by the league over the last five seasons points to a group of about eight per cent of players that the rule targets. “In the last five years we’ve done some research and looked at various statistics and 92 per cent of our players fight less than 10 times in the OHL and in fact 66 per cent of our players are involved in less than two fights in a given season,” said Branch. During the 2011-12 season, by the new rules, 25 players would have been suspended at least one time for having at least 11 fights, with Wind- sor forward Ty Bilke leading the way with a whopping 37 fighting majors among the Spitfires’ league-high 101. In Oshawa, the Generals were third in the league with 78 fighting majors, but just one player, Emerson Clark, dropped the gloves enough times to fall under the sanc- tions of these guidelines. Coincidently enough, on the day Branch make the rule changes public, Clark, who had 16 fights last year, was traded to the Spitfires. A couple of side notes to the rule re-jigging include that once the regular season ends, all fighting majors are wiped from the record and players will begin the play- offs with a clean slate. Also of importance is how the instigator rule factors in. Branch said any player found to have been lured into a fight by his oppo- nent will not have that fight count against his running total. Additionally, the player being slapped with the insti- gator penalty will still be sub- ject to the usual two-game suspension that accompa- nies that infraction and if it occurs during any one of that player’s fights above 10, they will essentially end up with a four-game ban. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 0 , 2 0 1 2 18 P mortgagerate dogwalker’sdoctor’s friend’s yourmom’s Insurance Mortgage Credit Cards Holidays When it comes to finding the right rate, everyone’s got an opinion.
