MOYA DILLON mdillon@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Boaters arriving in Frenchman’s Bay can look forward to an easier harbour entrance navigation after funding was secured for planned improvements to the waterway. On Canada Day, the federal and provincial governments announced that they would be contributing $3 million each, with an additional $3 million contributed by the City of Pickering, to improve Frenchman’s Bay harbour. “Our government is proud to invest in the improvement of Frenchman’s Bay harbour entrance, an initiative that will con- tribute to the local economy and attract visitors to our commu- nity,” said Corneliu Chisu, MP for Pickering-Scarborough East. Hosted by the Pickering Rod and Gun Club, families are invited to try their hand at fishing, or show off their well-honed skills, during the Urban Fishing Festival on Saturday, July 7 at 10 a.m. at Pickering’s Progress Park on Frenchman’s Bay. Rod and reels will be available for loan on a first- come, first-served basis and bait will be provided free. Kids can enjoy free hot dogs and refreshments and prizes will be handed out. The festival is one of many held in celebration of the Ministry of Natural Resource’s Family Fishing Week, which runs from July 7 to 15. “Ontario has beautiful lakes, streams and rivers,” said Michael Gravelle, Min- ister of Natural Resources. “Whether you’ve never fished before or have been doing it for years, fishing is a wonderful way to spend some time together as a family, enjoying this prov- ince’s great outdoors.” During Family Fishing Week Canadian residents can fish licence-free in Ontario. The event is aimed at encouraging amateur anglers to give the sport a try by eliminating any bar- riers, and encouraging families to try fishing as an inexpensive and easy way to enjoy Ontario’s lakes and rivers. “A day of fishing is a great way to enjoy Ontario’s nat- ural beauty and have some fun while creating fam- ily memories that will last a lifetime,” said Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism and Culture. “Ontario parks are the perfect setting for a family adventure and to discover Ontario’s great outdoors.” For more information on Family Fishing Week, visit www.mnr.gov.on.ca. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju l y 6 , 2 0 1 2 3 AP Join Cherry Downs Golf and Country Club for less than $60 a month *! A message from Durham Tourism Kerri King When you think of the classic Canadi- an novel Anne of Green Gables, you’re bound to think of the red-sanded beach- es of Prince Edward Island, but did you know that there’s a Durham connection to these stories? Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of the beloved series of stories, moved to Leaskdale (in the Township of Uxbridge) in 1911. She lived in the area for several years, during which time her husband was the minister of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. You can still visit the house where Montgomery lived with her husband and two sons, thanks to the restorative efforts of the Township of Uxbridge and the Lucy Maud Montgomery Society of Ontario. It makes a great, relaxing day trip to drive the rural roads to Leaskdale and see what life was like for an acclaimed author during an important time in Canadian history. You can even see the room where she penned 11 of her novels, including Anne’s House of Dreams. The Lucy Maud Montgomery Society of Ontario has several events planned in Leaskdale this summer, includ- ing themed Wednesday teas and a unique original play, Maud of Leaskdale. For a full list of events, visit www. lucymaudmont- gomery.ca. If you’re plan- ning a drive to Leaskdale, note that a road clo- sure on Durham Road 1 (Conces- sion 7) is the per- fect opportunity to take the scenic route. Travel the picturesque paved country roads and visit other local businesses in the area. Try some fresh raspberries at Spring View Farms or get some tasty french fries at Rooster’s Fries. There are several other farms in the area offering the summer’s freshest bounty; find them online at www.dur- hamfarmfresh.ca. While in Uxbridge, take the opportuni- ty to explore the shops in the downtown and take it to the trails. Did you know that Uxbridge is the trails capital of Canada? Check out trail maps online at www.durhamtrails.ca. For more information on fun things to do this summer in Durham, visit www. durhamtourism.ca and follow @Dur- hamTourism on Twitter. I can’t believe the article I read in which the Region was glowing about the waste diversion of 50 per cent from landfill and a target of 70 per cent by 2015. Can anyone explain to me why the Region is spending millions of dollars on a incin- erator when it is painfully obvious that the money should be spent in the pursuit of recycling? Does the word Mirabel mean anything? Russ Brown Whitby Embarrassed by our government To the editor: Re: ‘Calgary firm offers to pay for surgery to save Whitby boy’s sight’, news, durhamre- gion.com, June 14, 2012. No other story has held my attention like those you have had about this precious lit- tle boy losing his sight. I have never been so embarrassed by our government. It can send millions of dollars to needy countries and bring children from who need medical attention but cannot help one of our own. We should be able to send the little boy across the border for his treatment if that is the only place that can provide it. Thank goodness for the gener- osity of others. I think the Ontario govern- ment needs to step up and step in. Sandra Johnson Whitby Racist incident shocks Pickering family To the editor: I want to share an incident that happened to my three-year-old granddaughter who happens to be bi-racial. On a recent Saturday afternoon my daughter and granddaughter were on a GO bus travelling to Ajax. At Church Street, a woman boarded the bus and as she approached the area where my daugh- ter and granddaughter were seated she directed a hateful racial remark towards my granddaughter. This woman stated that she would not sit near a ‘Nigger’! Imagine the shock and hurt this caused -- and this towards an innocent child! No one within earshot said a word but shook their heads in disgust. We all need to be a little more vocal and less tolerant of this kind of behaviour, espe- cially on public transit where all people should be treated with respect. I have spo- ken to GO officials and although they do not tolerate this behaviour, there is no clear definition as to what kind of discipline, if any, would be applied. It is a very sad state of affairs when there is so much hate directed at one so inno- cent. We have lived in Pickering for over 30 years and although we have heard of rac- ism, we have never experienced it first hand. I can tell you it is very unsettling, to say the least. Judy Van Dusen Pickering No more plastic on neighbourhood streets To the editor: The plastic bag issue is much huge now, and everything is wrapped or bagged in plastic of some kind -- thick, thin, reusable and not reusable. They fly out of our garbage, get into trees and under cars. I have found a way to help reduce this clutter which is to cut up all plastic bags after use and before they get into the garbage. Take a pair of scissors, fold up the plastic, give it a few snips, and it will never again blow up in trees and around wildlife. I expect the bags used to bring home the groceries will eventually all go, but how about all those that wrap bread, meat, etc. Margaret Challenger Oshawa e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / letter writers are obliged to back up statements with verifiable facts / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ durhamregion.com Give a little more: Durham Region blood donors needed Picture this: A stretch of blacktop that reaches to the horizon. A car filled with outdoor gear and a family of four, antici- pating a week of fun on a cottage country lake. A sharp curve in the road. A disabled vehicle in the car’s path. A horrendous crash. Such an episode, or a variation of it, is not uncommon in the summer months in Durham Region and along the busy routes that lead from it to the Haliburton High- lands, the Kawarthas, or the Muskoka region. Emergency responders in communities across Ontario can attest to the nature of fate that often puts them in the centre of the picture, stabilizing injured victims and preparing them for an ambulance ride to the nearest hospital. The reality is, sadly, that even as Dur- ham Region residents head out to enjoy their summer vacations, the need for blood never takes time off. To answer the call, Canadian Blood Ser- vices is encouraging residents to consider donating the gift of life to ensure adequate supplies throughout the summer months, while also launching a new campaign across Canada to increase the nation’s blood base to 500,000 active donors and recruit 100,000 new donors every year for the next three years. Here at home, there are several local donor clinics lined up in communities across Durham Region in July. Call 1-888-236-6283 or visit www. blood.ca online to learn more or make an appointment. And students can build their community hours by donating blood; donors earn three hours for each donation. Donating blood doesn’t take much time, and its components can be used in a vari- ety of medical procedures. Before you head out for your summer vacation, or even if you’re staying home, take the time and to become one of those new active donors. It’s not an overstatement to say that donors are literally giving the gift of life in many cases. Picture this: A stretch of blacktop that reaches to the horizon. A car filled with outdoor gear and a family of four, antici- pating a week of fun on a cottage country lake. A sharp curve in the road. A disabled vehicle in the car’s path. A horrendous crash. A blood transfusion. A life saved. A chance at another summer family vaca- tion. Life is fragile and fate can intervene in a flash. OR WITH EVERY NEW CAR PURCHASE EARN 10,000 MILES from Page 1 He noted the project would “create jobs, boost tourism, improve boater safety and help protect Frenchman’s Bay for future generations.” The $9-million project will include replacing two breakwaters and widening the harbour entrance to improve safety and accessibility for boaters, preserve and enhance ecological conditions, pro- vide new opportunities for public use and recreation and enhance tourism. Tracy MacCharles, MPP for Picker- ing-Scarborough East, introduced a pri- vate members’ motion in the legislature in December suggesting the Ministry of Infrastructure look at supporting the long-gestating project, and was pleased to be on hand to see that support come to fruition. “This project will result in the creation of a safe harbour while preserving and enhancing the ecological conditions of this important Pickering landmark and commercial hub,” she said. Plans to improve the harbour began 15 years ago, although the idea was dis- cussed much earlier than that. With an Environmental Assessment already completed, officials are hopeful construction can begin before the end of the year, and be completed by 2013. “This will improve the harbour by making it fully accessible by land and water, increase the opportunities for recreational boating and contribute to Frenchman’s Bay becoming a destina- tion point, which will benefit local busi- nesses,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. He said people will be able to walk out on the breakwaters and fish or enjoy other recreational activities. Although Frenchman’s Bay is shown as one of the safest harbours in Lake Ontario on navigational maps, its har- bour entrance has been labeled a haz- ard, which restricts the number of boats coming in. Over the years increasing siltation affecting the entrance has led to a decrease in the number of boat slips in the harbour, from more than 1,000 down to about 300 today. “I think we’ll see an increase in tour- ism in terms of marina traffic, which will benefit the city as a whole,” Mayor Ryan continued. “These type of investments see long- term returns.” More opportunities for recreational boating once work is finished du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju l y 6 , 2 0 1 2 10 AP Approx.6000sq.ft.offinished living space.Boasting an incredible location with glorious gardens, privacy, solitude and custom pool. On in Pickering Singing Shakespeare in Durham MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Jeremy Smith says he was more than a little bit jumpy. The Driftwood Theatre Group founder and artistic director says before rehears- als started for this year’s Bard’s Bus Tour production, an original a capella musi- cal adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Mid- summer Night’s Dream, he was “terri- fied.” Some have opening night jitters, but the Oshawa native had opening rehears- al jitters. They were quickly allayed. “As soon as they started rehearsing this concept together, I thought, ‘Yup, I’ve made the right choice; we have some- thing special here’,” Smith says. “It’s one of his most popular comedies, it appeals to a wide audience and it’s also a musi- cal. What’s not to love?” Driftwood presents the work through- out the region this month and next, start- ing July 14 at Oshawa’s Parkwood Estate. It’s not the first time Driftwood has presented the play, he notes, as it was produced as their first-ever show in 1995 and again to mark the 10th season in 2004. But Smith says while the 2004 pro- duction was also a musical, this isn’t the same production. He and the co-cre- ators, composers Kevin Fox and Tom Lil- lington, “felt really good” about the 2004 version, but also “that it could be bet- ter.” They spent 18 months revising and expanding the work and Smith says the result “is a richer, deeper” experience. “I really felt there was a wonderful, beautiful quality to an a cappella musi- cal performance,” Smith says. “All of the aspects of the fairy world that you’ve entered could be represented through song.” In the play, Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors are strongly influenced by fairies that live in the for- est, where most of the play takes place. In Driftwood’s adaptation, Smith says when a character is controlled by the fairies, they sing. There’s no music but for the singing, however it was decided to incorporate a backing track, a recording of the actors singing, to resolve a problem: main- taining pitch when you can’t hear your sound is difficult. “That became a challenge for us; the backing track resolved that issue,” Smith says. He says Driftwood auditioned rough- ly 150 people for nine roles. In the end, four of the players are returning to Drift- wood’s stage while five are “entirely new to us and audiences.” The former includes Oshawa’s Steven Burley, who has appeared in all but two of Driftwood’s productions. Oshawa’s Ramon Perez created the illustration to promote this year’s pro- duction. Learn more about Driftwood, includ- ing the rain policy for the performances, at www.driftwoodtheatre.com. They offer an express car wash, starting as low as $10 for an exterior wash, all done by hand. You can also opt to have the interior vacuumed, the windows cleaned, the rims washed and polished and the tires dressed - all while you wait! That space between where her feet are and the ground should help her signifi- cantly as she prepares to compete in the 100m hurdles at the Olympic Games in London. The Pickering resident has been named to the Canadian team that will head over- seas later this month after finishing third at the Canadian track and field trials in Cal- gary in a bizarre race that had a number of interesting twists and turns. “I feel great. I’m excited that I get to go,” said the 25 year old earlier this week fol- lowing a training session. “It will be my first Olympic experience and I’m definite- ly excited I get to share it with my fiance (Justyn Warner). That makes it that much more special.” Holder and Warner, who plan to wed in October, were among a group of 40 track and field athletes named to the Canadian team following the weekend trials. War- ner in the 100m, and Holder in the 100m hurdles, which was the most anticipated event over the weekend. The hurdles featured six athletes who had met the Olympic qualifying standard time, with just three spots available on the Canadian team. Those in the hunt includ- ed a couple of Durham Region residents in Pickering’s Perdita Felicien and Whitby’s Priscilla Lopes-Schliep. But Felicien was tagged with a false start, ran under protest finishing third, but the protest was denied and she was disqualified. Lopes-Schliep, who won bronze at the Olympics four years ago in Beijing, clipped a hurdle and finished fifth. Holder finished fourth in a time of 12.80, but was placed third following the Felicien disqualification, earning one of the cov- eted Olympic spots. “It definitely wasn’t the race I wanted to run and it definitely wasn’t how I expect- ed to make the Olympic team, but, things never seem to go my way,” said Holder of the race. “I always have a difficult time getting where I want to be. That’s just the trend in my life, but I will take it. “I think I could have been a little better ... Anything can happen in track and field and it definitely happened then.” In addition to Holder, the 100m women’s hurdle team will be comprised of Jessica Zelinka who finished first in a time of 12.68 and Phylicia George who was second in 12.72. Saturday’s race was high drama leading in and continued through to the end. Holder, who graduated from Dunbarton and ran track on scholarship at the Uni- versity of Illinois, said you could feel the tension on the starting line. “It was a little bit crazy. You could defi- nitely feel the craziness,” she said. “The crowd was going crazy as well. We defi- nitely had to keep focussed and I think I did a pretty good job of being able to refo- cus myself for each start and just took it from there.” From here Holder will head to the east coast to race in Halifax this weekend as part of the National Track League series, and then run again in Toronto on Wednes- day in the series finale. The preliminary heats of the 100m hurdles are on Monday, Aug. 6 at the Olympic Stadium in London. >BY BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com Holder floating on air SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND PICKERING -- Nikkita Holder of Pickering finished third in the 100m hurdles at the Canadian track and field Olympic trials, and will be off to London to compete at the Olympic Games. Lacrosse watch Ajax Rock make deal for 2015 draft pick BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- The Ajax Rock made a trade at the Major Series Lacrosse deadline that GM/head coach Clem D’Orazio hopes will help the club down the road. The Rock sent last year’s third overall draft pick and league rookie of the year Jordan MacIntosh, along with goalten- der Tyler Carlson, to the Peterborough Lakers in exchange for a 2015 first round pick, a conditional pick and future con- siderations. “There was a need from both teams,” said D’Orazio of the deal. “Basically they got what they needed for now and we got something we could build for the future.” As for the conditional pick, D’Orazio added there are “certain considerations between the two clubs that are confiden- tial.” MacIntosh appeared in only two games with the Rock this season, scoring twice and adding four assists, while Carlson had a 10.46 goals against average in six games. Last season MacIntosh finished second in team scoring with 52 points in 14 games. Carlson carried the load in net, appearing in all 20 games, finishing with an 11.07 average. D’Orazio said that a number of teams from the league inquired about the avail- ability of players on the Rock roster, but that the deal with Peterborough “was just the best deal for our team and organiza- tion at this point.” As for not getting any players in return, D’Orazio was comfortable with the roster as it stands. “Both (MacIntosh and Carlson) are big players and key assets to the organization. But we feel we have a strong core that we can continue to compete with and I think we are still going to find our success with the guys that are in the dressing room.” It was the second trade in just a cou- ple of weeks for the Rock, who obtained John Quarrie and Justin Gibson from the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks in exchange for Martin Whittaker and a 2013 second round pick the Rock had acquired in another trade. The Rock (1-8-0) were in Peterborough last night (after our print deadline) and host Brooklin tonight at 8 p.m. at the Ajax Community Centre. Following tonight’s game, the Rock have just three left in the regular season. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju l y 6 , 2 0 1 2 14 AP du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju l y 6 , 2 0 1 2 15 AP 905-767-3330 email:camp@westrougecc.org •www.pickeringrougecc.org DRAGON BOAT CAMP SPECIAL ONLY $120/WEEK AT OUR PICKERING SITE AGES 10 –14 *note: no other discounts applicable LEARN HOW TO CANOE, KAYAK & DRAGON BOAT! ETOBICOKE -- Ajax Swimming’s top 18-and-under swimmers trav- elled to Etobicoke to compete in Etobicoke Swimming’s annual Age Group International meet. Ajax swimmers did not disap- point, racing to 14 medals and appearing in finals 53 times in three nights. Youngster Aryanna Fernandes set the tone for the women, registering point scoring swims in all six of her races, racing to 100 per cent best times and qualifying for National Age Group Championships in five races. Aryanna is also rapidly clos- ing in on the club record in the 200- metre butterfly for 11-12 females. Teammate Emily Vandenberg also qualified for Age Groups in the 200m backstroke, and lowered her best times in five of out of six races. By far the strongest swimming of the weekend came in the 13-14 boys’ category, where six different swimmers were able to compete in finals in at least one swim. Mark Burns made massive drops in both his 200m fly and 200m individual medley, qualifying for the B finals and National Age Group Champi- onships in both swims. Ethan Har- rison continued a spectacular sea- son with appearances in finals in five out of six races, and Age Group Cuts in the 200m fly and 200m backstroke. Philip Kay also made finals in five out of six races, and hit the Age Group standard in three swims -- the 400m IM, 200m back and 200m IM. The swimming in the 13-14 cat- egory was highlighted by the per- formances of dynamic duo Ryan Kelly and Javier Acevedo. Kelly swam to best times in five out of six races, competed in finals in every race, made Age Group Champi- onships in every race, and picked up four medals. Kelly’s best swims were his 400’s. Kelly lowered his personal best time in the 400m IM by 13 seconds, a drop that moved him from an eighth place seed to a silver medal. In his last race of the weekend, Kelly moved from a 15th-place seed to fourth position in the 400m freestyle, dropping 12 seconds on his way to a 4:25.70. Not be outdone was Kelly’s train- ing partner, Javier Acevedo, who swam to best times in five out of six races, including gold medals in the 50m free, 100m free and 200m free. Acevedo’s most impressive race came in the 1500m free, dropping over one minute in the swim, while lapping his heat and winning by over 50m. Aceveedo capped off his weekend with a new club record in the 100m back. Kelly and Aceve- do were joined in finals by Ste- ven Taylor, who along with team- mate Daniel Wilson, was the most improved 13-14 swimmer on the weekend. Taylor appeared in finals in four swims, made Age Group Championships in four swims, and dropped a ridiculous 32 seconds in his 200m back. Wilson qualified for Age Groups in three swims in his new age category, and dropped 20 seconds in his 400m IM. In the senior category, Andrew Kay showed strong improvement in his breaststroke swims, qualify- ing for finals and narrowly miss- ing medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m breast. Kay qualified for Age Groups in all three swims. Team- mate and new 15 year old Shaun Hancyz qualified for Age Groups in five swims, and completely demolished his heats in both the 400m free and 1500m free, drop- ping eight seconds in the former and over 30 in the latter. Veteran Julien Dodu appeared in finals in all of his swims, and is consider- ably ahead of last season’s pace as he continues to prepare for a big summer nationals. Strong butterfly training was evident by Devin Ste. Marie and Carleigh Barrett, who were both much faster than last season’s training meets. Barrett and Ste. Marie are also currently preparing for big finishes at Sum- mer Nationals in Edmonton this July. Curtis Voth wrapped up his season with new lifetime best long course swims in the 50m free, 50m back, 100m back and 200m back. The Ajax-Pickering peewees won in convincing fashion over the Hamilton City Steelers with a score of 28–0. Quarterback Jason Corry threw multi- ple completions to Ethan Smith and then a perfect strike to Evan Lucas to open the scoring with the first touchdown. Run- ning back Rasheed Tucker followed up with two touchdowns, an 80-yard run, and a 55-yard rush down the side. Run- ning back Kalven Lewis juked and jived on his way to a 30-yard rush to the end zone for the final touchdown. The Dol- phins defence was smothering, focused and improved. Defensive back Darius Brown provided some amazing tackles to keep the opponents out of the Dolphins’ end zone. The Dolphins junior OVFL team main- tained its focus and determination, con- tinuing their unbeaten streak with a 41–20 victory. QB Raishaun Provo led his team into battle, throwing for five touchdowns. The offence was in great form, with touch- downs coming from Josh Henry, Aus- tin Benn, George Goudogianis and Dar- nel Jarrett. The defence stepped up its game with interceptions from Matthew Williams, Sharlon Smith and Nathan- iel Benjamin and sacks and tackles from Trevaughan James, Trey White and Kes- ean Bennett.
