AJAX -- Two Ajax natives and one Toronto
man put their love for Canada officially on
record recently, recording their own ver-
sion of the national anthem.
Chris and Matthew Gormley are from
Ajax. The brothers make up two-thirds of
the band Daylight for Deadeyes. Andrew
Neill is the other member.
Earlier this year, the band released its
own version of O Canada. The recording
is already being played in more than 50
Ontario schools, as well as schools in Brit-
ish Columbia.
A music video for the tune has been
viewed almost 13,000 times in two months.
“It’s got a little bit of spunk,” Chris Gorm-
ley said of the recording. “It does have
something to it that a lot of versions out
there don’t have, and I think that’s why
people are kind of reacting to it in a positive
way.”
School kids are loving it.
“The kids are banging on the tables and
dancing in the halls,” he said. “I don’t think
that’s a good thing for all times when the
national anthem plays, but sometimes, you
know what, I think it’s cool because I think
it’s good for the country if people are getting
excited about the anthem and they love it.”
The recording has a rock-and-roll feel.
“We wanted it to sound as original as pos-
sible, but as brand new as possible,” Mr.
Gormley explained. “If you play it back to
back with one of our rock songs, it kind
of just sounds like one of our songs, even
though it’s the anthem. That was the goal.”
He added recording the tune was a great
experience.
“When we did O Canada in the studio,
it was magical,” he said. “When I came in
with the idea, the producer was like. ‘Oh my
God, that’s amazing.’ We literally dropped
everything we were doing and we began
recording it, like, that moment, and as we
were doing it, we were looking at each other
going, ‘This is big.’”
The band has contacted Ajax schools, and
is hoping they’ll play the tune.
“Right when we started, I was like it’s got
to get into Ajax schools,” Mr. Gormley said.
“It’s important for sentimental reasons. It’s
our hometown, it’s where we grew up as
kids, it’s where we went to school, and I just
think it would be nice to be able to say.”
The music video can be found at http://
youtu.be/TlOcLyxmwMI. The video fea-
tures a Canadian flag drum kit lent by
Yamaha Drums that was custom-created
for The Tragically Hip’s 2010 Vancouver
Winter Olympics performance.
The song can be downloaded through
iTunes for $0.99. Daylight for Deadeyes is
currently recording the followup to their
last disc, Winter. The new album, Summer,
is due out in July and will be followed by
Autumn and Spring this fall and next year.

Unfair coverage
of Conservatives
To the editor:
Re: ‘Pickering residents protest omnibus
budget bill C-38’, news, durhamregion.com,
June 14, 2012.
I find it quite disturbing that you would
mislead the public with such a story. Six
people standing in front Mr. Chisu’s office,
one barely out of diapers, hardly warrants
such coverage.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has saved
this country from financial disaster. Fur-
thermore the federal Conservative party
has done far more for the region of Dur-
ham than any Green Party wannabe could
ever dream of.
Your partisan position is an unfair com-
mentary on the budget. Stick to telling
stories of the good work the people of
Pickering do and leave the Conservative
bashing to the Toronto Star and CBC.
Mark Fennell
Pickering
Federal government
is burning bridges
To the editor:
I sent an e-mail to my member of Parlia-
ment, Corneliu Chisu, asking if he was for
or against Omnibus Bill C-38. I gave him
my phone number, e-mail address and my
address.
I’m still awaiting a reply.
I am one of his constituents. I believe
everyone who is against Bill C-38 should
have sent an e-mail or contacted their
member of Parliament stating their rea-
sons why they were against it. This bill
was rammed through Parliament under
disguise of the budget. Stephen Harper
and Jim Flaherty, remember, you only got
roughly 40 per cent of the popular vote.
You are burning your bridges as you go
from day to day.
Gordon Robinson
Pickering
*** To the editor:
Re: ‘Where is the outrage over omnibus
bill?’, letter to the editor, News Advertiser,
June 22, 2012.
I agreed totally with the writer. Canadians
are too passive when it comes to standing
up and telling our leaders that we are not
happy with their decisions on our future.
I have been involved with protests on a
couple of issues myself.
But then again, there have been protests
and in the end our so-called leaders did
just what they wanted to.
That basically told us, the people, that
they really don’t care what we think or
feel.
This bill was detrimental to all Canadi-
ans. We can thank those who voted Ste-
phen Harper and his cronies back in with a
majority for this.
If the writer or anyone else reading this
would like to organize a protest, I would be
more than happy to participate.

Disappearance of flag in
Pickering upsets family
To the editor:
My family has lived in Pickering for more
than 16 years and an incident that hap-
pened on a recent Friday night has both
angered and disappointed us.
For the past two weeks, as a display of
support during the Euro Cup soccer games,
we have proudly displayed a giant German
flag hung from a pole on our roof. When
we woke on Saturday morning, we were
shocked to see that someone had pulled
down the flag pole and stolen our flag. Per-
haps it was disgruntled soccer fans or teens
out late at night just looking for trouble.
Either way, we’ve certainly lost faith in the
safety of our neighbourhood and the indi-
viduals who would commit such an act. It’s
such a shame that one cannot show sup-
port for a sports team without having acts
of vandalism committed on their property.
Hopefully, this e-mail will prompt any-
one with information to come forward.

Durham has much to be thankful for on Canada Day
Canada Day is a time for us not only
to barbecue and party, at home or park,
campground or cottage, but also a day to
celebrate and be deeply appreciative of all
that we have.
We live in a huge, beautiful
country, with natural won-
ders from coast to coast to
coast.
Vast forests, innumerable
lakes, mountains big and small,
something for all tastes. And if you’re not
the outdoors type, we have everything
from cosmopolitan cites to cozy small
towns.
One could spend the better part of a life-
time exploring Canada and never come
close to seeing it all.
We enjoy a system of government that
lets us speak our mind and even take
to the streets, with no fear of reprisal or
imprisonment.
If you’ve got a beef with the premier or
the prime minister, you can air it.
We live in a peaceful country that hasn’t
seen a war on our soil since we were
Upper Canada and the Americans invad-
ed 200 hundred years ago.
We welcome the world to Canada every
day, and there’s a reason why people from
so many foreign nations flock here: this is
one of the most desirable places to live on
earth, and it’s no secret.
And when people from other countries
do come to Canada, we don’t fit them into
a mould: their cultural traditions become
a part of the fabric of Canada, a multi-
coloured tapestry.
We have a rich history that began long
before the first Europeans settled here.
Our First Nations people didn’t master
the land, they lived with it, treating it with
respect and cherishing it.
Sound familiar?
Environmentalism wasn’t a fad for our
Native peoples, it was a way of life.
And, lest we forget, when the Americans
did invade in the War of 1812, Natives
were instrumental in repelling them.
While our geographical size is large, our
population is relatively small.
Yet, Canadians have been quick to fight
tyranny and oppression in the world wars
and other conflicts.
In peacetime, again despite our size, we
are known throughout the world for send-
ing soldiers to places of conflict to help
others live in peace.
We have so much already, and so much
to look forward to as Canadians.
So get out there, wave a flag with pride
and be a part of this birthday party.

Enjoy local Canada Day celebrations in Durham Region>
(NC)—Have you ever found a raccoon digging through your garbage, or an abandoned baby squirrel in a park, or an injured bird on your lawn and wondered what to do? You’re not alone. Local wildlife centres field thousands of calls every year about these types of situations, but say they often don’t have the resources to quickly answer every request. “Common misconceptions about handling local wildlife can cause more harm than good in these types of situations,” says Mary Desjardins, the executive director of TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF). “That’s why Canadians should edu-cate themselves on what to do if they encounter wildlife so they can avoid potentially dangerous scenarios.”TD FEF supports thousands of grassroots projects dedicated to preserving Canada’s environment, says Desjardins. In the last 20 years, the foundation has provided funding for more than 20,000 projects that protect local and endangered wildlife. Take a look at a few tips for dealing with the most common local wildlife scenarios:• If you find an animal digging through your garbage: Do not feed it. Limit food sources by keeping your outdoor areas clean of food and keeping garbage indoors. This will ensure wild animals don’t view humans as a potential food source and will encourage them to forage for natural food sources that are better for their systems.• If you find a sick or injured animal: Reduce their stress by minimizing noise levels and avoid handling or looking at the animal. If you feel safe to do so, try to confine it in a box or car-rier in a quiet, warm and dark area. Free, one-day
festival returns
July 1; six-plus
hours of music
starting at noon
PICKERING -- More than 130 artists and
bands from as far away as Los Angeles
applied to play this year's Music By the
Bay Festival in Pickering.
And then there were 50, then 19, until
the final 10-act lineup was chosen.
The free festival is back at Millennium
Square at the foot of Liverpool Road
July 1, with music from noon to 6:30
p.m.
"It was hard," says festival co-orga-
nizer Lori Murray of the cull. "Constant
listening; we did that for about three
weeks."
She says the songs the artists submit-
ted were all burned onto a disc with no
name attached, so the committee which
chose the bands had no idea who they
were or where they were from, just what
they sounded like.
The lineup features Cole Hermer and
Modern Alchemy from Ajax, Whitby's
The Joint and Pickering's The Skyes
and Kopano, with the latter headlining
and closing the day of music.
"It wasn't rigged," Murray says. "There
was no preference."
She says the festival aims to present
a variety of music, and this year folk,
country, hard rock and progressive rock
are represented.
The festival features young bands and
artists under 21 years, and Murray notes
their performance options are limited.
"Because of their age, they're restrict-
ed from playing a lot of venues," she
says. "This gives them an opportunity
to play on a professional stage."
The festival is a labour of love for
music-lovers Lori and Paul Murray, and
the former notes she's already started
her 2013 festival file.

The summer is finally
here and it’s time to soak up the
rays! It’s also a great time of
year to let your vehicle shine.
Diamond Shine offers a
package that fits every budget,
from a hand wash starting at just $19.95 to
complete detailing. The vehicle is hand washed,
using high quality soap, and hand dried with
a chamois to achieve a brilliant shine. The
difference can be seen in the details!
Summer is also the perfect time to come in
for a professional wax and polish. The wax will
protect your vehicle from the elements, including
harmful UV rays and acid rain. After a visit to
Diamond Shine, your vehicle will have a long
lasting shine!
The products they use also make a
noticeable difference in the appearance and
maintenance of your vehicle. Diamond Shine
only uses high quality, professional products that
are not available over the counter. Here, they
use silicone-based products that
last, and even six months after
cleaning, a simple wipe of the
dash with a towel can bring back
the shine!
It’s called detailing for
a reason. At Diamond Shine, their showroom
package leaves no small space untouched. To
achieve a showroom look, they use toothbrushes
and Q-Tips to get to the hard to reach areas. They
only use the best products, to ensure superior
results.
Interiors are vacuumed, shampooed and
detailed. Don’t let dog hairs and spilled drinks
spoil the interior of your vehicle! Bring it in to
Diamond Shine to be cleaned and have your
upholstery protected to keep it looking great all
summer long.
“We want to thank everyone for putting
their trust in us for the past 17 years, including
both our loyal customers and the many dealers
in the area,” says Joanne Elawar of Diamond
Shine.
Diamond Shine is a family owned and
operated business that has been serving the
Durham Region since 1994. Diamond Shine
is located at 221 Westney Rd. S., in Ajax (just
north of Bayly and directly across from the Super
8 Motel). For more information or to book an

Olympic dreams
come down
to Saturday
in Calgary
CALGARY -- All eyes from across the coun-
try will be on the final event, the women’s
100-metre hurdles, when the 2012 Canadi-
an track-and-field championships wrap up
on Saturday in Calgary.
The eyes from these parts will be par-
ticularly keen given that as many as three
Durham Region athletes are in line to grab
berths for the 2012 London Olympics in
that one event alone.
Leading the way will be veterans Pris-
cilla Lopes-Schliep of Whitby and Perdita
Felicien of Pickering, while young Nikkita
Holder, also of Pickering, is very much in
the hunt as well.
They, along with Markham’s Phylicia
George, Edmonton’s Angela Whyte and
London’s Jessica Zelinka, have all run at
least the Olympic A standard this year,
meaning that the top three in Saturday’s
final, presuming they are all there, can
book their flight to England. Zelinka, also a
favourite in the heptathlon, was uncertain
about competing in the hurdles.
Lopes-Schliep, despite being just over
nine months removed from giving birth
to her first child, heads in as the favourite
after winning the recent Donovan Bailey
Invitational meet in Edmonton and beat-
ing all those competitors but for Zelinka,
who did not take part.
Felicien has won this event 10 times in
the past, and has represented Canada at
two Olympic Games, missing Beijing due
to an injury.
Whyte and Zelinka also have Olympic
experience, Zelinka’s coming in the hep-
tathlon, where she finished fifth in Beijing.
Other Durham athletes looking for Olym-
pic berths include Oshawa’s Matt Hughes
in the 3000-metre steeplechase, where he’s
ranked second but still needs to hit the A
standard, Pickering’s Anson Henry in the
100m dash and Whitby’s Michelle Theo-
phille in the women’s high jump.

JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND
WHITBY -- Derek Suddons of the Brooklin Redmen puts the grab on Kyle Davis of the Ajax Rock during Wednesday’s game
at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre. The Rock had a tough night, losing 13-3.
Rough night for Rock
Ajax falls 13-3
to Brooklin
WHITBY -- The respective GM/head
coaches of the Brooklin Redmen and
Ajax Rock had differing feelings about
the end result of Wednesday’s game, but
they were in sync with how it evolved.
Wayne Colley, who heads up the Red-
men, was pleased with the effort of his
club, who rang up a 13-3 win over the
Rock at the Iroquois Park Sports Com-
plex in Major Series Lacrosse play.
Just down the dressing room hallway it
was pretty quiet outside the Rock dress-
ing room, as Clem D’Orazio, who is in
charge of the Rock, was left searching
for answers just five days after his club
recorded its first victory of the season
over the very same Redmen.
Well, maybe not the same Redmen, as
Colley pointed out he had a full team
for Wednesday’s game, missing some
key elements in the loss due to other
commitments. But both agreed that the
Rock were a different team as well, not
showing the same spirit as they had in
the previous meeting.
“Tonight we just played lacrosse,”
said Colley. “Ajax didn’t come out with
the enthusiasm they came out with the
other night and it showed on the score-
board.”
D’Orazio concurred.
“We didn’t have any drive tonight. The
boys didn’t want it. They came out flat
and (Brooklin) took advantage of us
early because of it.”
There was a sense early on that it was
going to be one of those nights. The Red-
men opened the scoring just 1:47 into
the game on a Derek Suddons marker,
then killed off a double minor penalty to
Derek Hopcroft shortly after. The Red-
men then closed out the period with
goals by Kiel Matisz, Matt Holman and
Shawn Williams for a 4-0 lead after the
opening 20 minutes.
Brooklin outscored the Rock 4-3 in the
second and 5-0 in the third.
“I think when (Aaron) Bold made a
couple of big saves to start the game, it
deflated our offence a little bit from the
confidence we had built from the last
time we played. So I think that’s where it
started,” said D’Orazio of the early defi-
cit the Rock were in.
The top scorers for the Redmen took
care of business on the night, as Wil-
liams led with nine points on two goals
and seven assists, Hopcroft had a goal
and six assists and Matisz scored three
times and added two assists.
What pleased Colley most about that
were the number of assists the trio
racked up.
The Rock got goals from Jordan MacIn-
tosh, Alex Crepinsek and John Rae.
The Rock (1-8-0) are off until next
Thursday when they visit Peterbor-
ough.

Watson a dual sport athlete with Ironheads, MoJacks
PORT PERRY -- Regardless of the season,
Dakota Watson has something to look
forward to.
As fall rolls around, the Port Perry resi-
dent turns his attention to hockey which,
for the past two seasons, he has played
for the Jr. C Port Perry MoJacks. When the
ice is taken out of the rinks in the spring,
he isn’t without something to do, putting
down his hockey stick and picking up a
lacrosse stick to suit up with the Jr. B Ajax
Ironheads.
A man for all seasons, so to speak.
And what of his preference? Depends
on the season, he quips.
The 20 year old has been pulling dou-
ble duty ever since he laced up a pair of
skates, or shoes. In the winter it was hock-
ey in the Port Perry minor system, and
in the summer he ventured to Whitby to
play minor lacrosse.
He grew up going to MoJacks games,
so it was a natural progression when he
became one for the 2010-11 season. His
point totals weren’t high, registering
3-4-7 numbers as a rookie, but his pen-
alty minutes were, tying for the team lead
with 64. This past season he tried to add
some other elements to his game, finish-
ing with 4-10-14 point totals and just 39
penalty minutes in 38 games.
“I was kind of an enforcer,” he says of
his first season. “This year I was trying
to play with more finesse. My role is still
more physical, hitting.
“Playing in my hometown seemed like
the right thing to do. I’m going to school
at UOIT so it just makes sense to stay at
home and play hockey.”
When he returns to the MoJacks for the
upcoming season, there will be a new
coach at the helm in Jon Campbell. Wat-
son says the coaching change from Corey
Bricknell to Campbell came as a sur-
prise.
“I didn’t expect it,” he admits. “We had
a disappointing year this year. My first
year we had a good run and made it out
of our league. We kind of choked last year
in the first round.”
Now that he has taken a summer break
from his engineering studies, it’s lacrosse
that occupies his time. After playing
minor in Whitby he spent one season
in Jr. C with the West Durham Patriots
before making the jump up to the Iron-
heads. In this, his third season with the
club, his role with the Ironheads is simi-
lar to the one he plays with the MoJacks.
“More of a physical role. When I get my
chances I go with the ball if I can, but
more of a defensive player.”
Despite his penchant for defensive play
on the floor, Watson had 10 goals and 13
assists in 20 games for the Ironheads this
season, helping the team to the eighth
seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Ironheads (7-13-0) will face the top
seed in the conference, Akwesasne (19-
1-0), in game three of their best-of-five
playoff series tonight at the Ajax Com-
munity Centre at 8 p.m.
The Ironheads are down 2-0 in the
series after losses of 22-3 and 12-8 last
weekend in Akwesasne.
If needed, games four and five of the
series will be in Ajax on Saturday and
Sunday at 3 p.m.
In the summer
it’s lacrosse with
the Ironheads,
in winter hockey

PORT PERRY -- Dakota Watson plays Jr.
B lacrosse for the Ajax Ironheads in the
summer, and Jr. C hockey for the Port
Perry MoJacks in the winter.

Smith new coach of Generals
by Shawn Cayley
scayley@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- It was a lengthy, in-depth pro-
cess, but the Oshawa Generals believe
they’ve found the right man to lead the club.
Former Windsor Spitfires assistant coach
D.J. Smith was introduced Thursday morn-
ing as the new head coach of hockey club,
bringing to an end a search that spanned
some two months and involved in the neigh-
bourhood of 20 candidates.
Smith has spent the past six seasons on the
bench with the Spitfires, serving as both an
assistant and associate coach and has a pair
of Memorial Cup championships under his
belt.
Quite comfortable and not necessari-
ly looking to leave Windsor, Smith said the
opportunity was right for him to take this
step up with the Generals.
“Getting a chance to run your own team,
run your own bench with the help of (GM)
Jeff Twohey is a big reason I decided to come
here,” Smith, a 35-year-old Windsor native,
said following the press conference. “A guy
like him I know is going to get me players and
help me in this process to making this team a
winning organization again.”
Smith also pointed to the ownership struc-
ture, naming the likes of Peter DeBoer and
Adam Graves, and cited their commitment
to winning as another drawing card.
“You don’t want to leave a great opportu-
nity in Windsor to go somewhere where it’s
not a stable organization. These guys are well
aware of how to win and what the process
is. It’s very similar to the way it is where I am
coming from. I think that is one of the rea-
sons I decided now was the time,” he said.
After seeking out permission from the Spit-
fires, Twohey first made contact with Smith
near the start of the search to find a replace-
ment for Gary Agnew, who finished out the
season after replacing Chris DePiero last
November, and had further discussions with
him at last weekend’s NHL draft in Pittsburgh
before closing the deal earlier this week.
