Humane Society investigating after birds allegedly hosed off roof PICKERING - Workers at an office complex in Pickering were shocked to arrive to a parking lot full of dead and injured baby seagulls. There were feathers everywhere, and all the seagulls were really angry, there were dead birds and other little ones running around,” said Tim Rhodes, branch manager for the Ian Martin Group at 940 Brock Rd. S., where a number of baby seagulls were killed. Pickering Animal Services received an anon- ymous call from an employee in one of the building’s offices on June 21, reporting that a number of seagulls had been blasted from the building’s roof with some type of high power hose. Animal control officers responded to the scene to find dead baby seagulls scattered throughout the parking lot and injured birds wandering the area. “I’ve never seen anything like this, some- one just taking a hose to the babies and leav- ing dead and injured birds everywhere,” said Debby Houghton, animal cruelty investigator with the Humane Society of Durham Region, noting they had found almost 20 dead birds and collected another three baby seagulls, which officials feared would not be able to take care of themselves after being removed from the nest. “We have to learn to live with wildlife. Yes, it can be somewhat problematic at times but you can’t just go and cause suffer- ing to the animal,” Ms Houghton said. Ms. Houghton said birds like to nest on buildings with flat roofs, such as 940 Brock, and that animal control companies can be called in to remove nesting birds properly if it becomes a problem. “We’ve spoken to the landlord about it and said you have to do something, we can hear them on the roof, clawing and scratching; the adults get aggres- sive and they poop on cars and people, it gets expensive to wash your car every day,” Mr. Rhodes said, noting the employees were dis- mayed to find the birds had been harmed. “This was not the way to deal with it. I’m not sure what the right solution is but I definite- ly think there’s a more humane way to do it. Whoever did this obviously wasn’t qualified to be dealing with wildlife.” The deaths of the birds may constitute a fed- eral offence under the Canadian Wildlife Act; an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Ms. Houghton is trying to find the landlord. The Humane Society is working with Toron- to Wildlife to care for the baby seagulls that survived. view photos @ durhamregion.com Seagulls dead, injured in Pickering incident Moya Dillon mdillon@durhamregion.com> du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 2 2 , 2 0 1 2 4 AP A good detox program cleanses the intestinal tract, the urinary tract, the liver, gallbladder, the blood and lymphatic system. My money was on the cream cheese in our first- ever Big Melt challenge. But it wasn’t even a close race. Like Secre- tariat in the 1973 Belmont Stakes or Michael Phelps in the pool at the 2008 Olympics, the chocolate blew away the competition. In 34C heat Wednesday, two intrepid edi- tors and a photographer stood by as we turned our cameras on three items common- ly found in local family kitchens: 250 grams of butter, 250 grams of cream cheese and 250 grams of chocolate. More than 300 people took our poll yester- day with 60 per cent picking the butter, 32 per cent the chocolate and only eight per cent the cheese. If you picked the chocolate, take a bow. At the eight-minute mark it started losing its shape and quickly went cascading over the wine glass used as a stand. It was then a waiting game for the other two. No matter how hot it got, or how many people stopped to see what we were doing, we waited it out until one of the two remain- ing items started to crumble. We had to wait for awhile. It took 39 minutes for the butter to take a tumble. The cream cheese never lost its shape. It didn’t even sweat, which makes me wonder just what ingredients it contains. So the winner of our first Big Melt is choco- late. Let us know what you want us to try next when the temperature heads above 30C. The June 21 test results from the Region of Durham show Bowmanville Beach East in Clar- ington, Newcastle Beach Central in Clarington and Pickering Beach in Ajax tested positive for elevated bacteria levels. The Region tests water at local beaches throughout the summer and reports the findings each week. Beaches are considered unsafe when levels of E. coli bacteria exceed the provincial standard of 100 E. coli per 100 ml of water. The health department reminds local residents not to swim in beach water for at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall, as bacteria levels can increase due to run-off. Water samples from Durham’s beaches are analyzed at the Public Health Ontario Laboratory in Peterborough. Three Durham beaches posted as unsafe for swimming A Metroland Media Group Ltd. The letter writer couldn’t have said it any better about our dangerous highways these days. But it’s not only on our highways that we see drivers driving dangerously, but also in our own neighbourhoods. I was coming to a four-way crosswalk at the end of January, had the right of way and proceeded to walk across. I came to the middle of the crosswalk and the next thing I know one of those careless drivers going very fast came through the stop sign and nearly took my life. I have much to live for as many other innocent people do, so I say to that motor- ist and others, please wake up and slow down and if you don’t know how to drive properly and obey the rules, just get off the road. Verna McDonald Ajax Goose deliberately run over in Pickering To the editor: Never before in my life have I seen such a deliberate act of violence towards a help- less animal. On a recent Friday I stopped at a light on Liverpool Road at Pickering Parkway when I saw a family of geese pro- ceed to walk across the road about 100 yards ahead of me. Once the light turned green, I and a maroon van to my left began to drive slowly towards the family of geese. Once we were about five feet away from the birds, both I and the van came to a stop to allow the family to safely cross the road, or so I assumed. I watched as the adult goose slowly walked in front of my vehicle and then in front of the van. Once the adult goose was in front of the van, I was mortified to witness the driver of the van slam his foot on the gas and drive right over the helpless animal. This act of violence was completely intentional and totally unnecessary. There were several witnesses to this, and everyone seemed just as mortified as I was. We watched in shock as the driver of the van sped off, northbound on Liverpool Road. The animal was in great distress, with serious injuries, and was calling out to the other geese standing by. It was hor- rible. Another motorist pulled up and visu- ally was just as upset as I was. That driver ultimately made the difficult decision to proceed and to put the animal out of its misery. I’m disgusted that someone would deliberately harm another living thing. I can’t get the image of this out of my mind. If anyone has more information about this situation, please contact Durham police and report it. L.D. Blake Whitby Where is the outrage over omnibus bill? To the editor: I simply don’t get it. Where are the voices of public outrage? Canadians from coast to coast are being attacked under the Harper government’s omnibus budget Bill C-38 and nary a word. Five billion dollars in spending cuts. The loss of 19,000 federal jobs. Age eligibility for Old Age Security goes from 65 to 67. Significant changes to employment insur- ance. Measures to curb greenhouse gases scrapped. Foreign workers paid less than the going rate and the list goes on. Our complacency must be replaced by a fierce desire to say enough is enough. Our compassion for one another is being tested by a Conservative government that aims to divide us. Wake up, Canada and take a stand before it’s too late. Local doctors led the discussion at the forum, sponsored by the Ontario Medical Association, and made clear they ardent- ly oppose the arbitrary approach of Dal- ton McGuinty’s Liberal minority govern- ment in imposing a new contract on doc- tors. They took turns at Tuesday’s forum describing the immediate and future impacts of the government’s decision and the picture they paint isn’t pretty. A return to longer wait times for some services, a complete withdrawal of some services in certain areas of the province, and an overall decline in the quality of health care were among the issues raised at Tuesday’s forum. However, as one doctor at the event made clear, Ontario doctors are more than will- ing to negotiate with the Province and are fully aware of the fiscal situation in which the government currently finds itself. But that fact cannot be understated. The Ontario government must confront the ballooning deficit incurred as a result of the global economic meltdown of 2008, and health care costs factor significantly into that equation. In that context, everyone in Ontario -- including our health care professionals -- must be willing to reduce costs, seek inno- vation and cost-efficiency. The issue isn’t so much the govern- ment’s focus on reducing its deficit as it is its heavy-handed and clumsy handling of the file by imposing health care cuts uni- laterally. And it’s not too late to mitigate the dam- age and reduce the friction. If Ontario’s doctors are truly committed to negotia- tion, if they are as committed to acknowl- edging the Province’s fiscal difficulties as some have indicated, then they must be willing to compromise on fees and servic- es. But the Liberal government, too, must be willing to move from its hard position and seek affordable common ground with Ontario’s doctors and strike a better bal- ance. In much the same way that Premier McGuinty’s Liberals and the opposition NDP negotiated to avoid a snap election earlier this week over budgetary amend- ments, surely there is enough political will at Queen’s Park to consider a more work- able agreement with the province’s doc- tors. Doctors indicate they are willing to talk. Patients want to feel secure that the servic- es they need will be available when they need them. The Province has an opportunity here to avert a crisis in health care, but it will take both sides of the debate to achieve that. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 2 2 , 2 0 1 2 6 AP du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 2 2 , 2 0 1 2 7 AP WE KEEP OUR PATIENTS SMILING BY TAKINGTHE TIME TO UNDERSTAND THEIR NEEDS. There are several benefits to having new windows and doors in your home. First, they improve the overall look of your house and increase its value. New windows and doors are also much more energy efficient, which means you can keep your heating and air conditioning inside, reducing your monthly bills. It may be tempting to pick up some windows and install them yourself, but you may find that you’re not getting the highest quality windows and the installation is trickier than it seems. Even if you buy the best windows on the market, if they are not installed and sealed properly, they essentially become worthless. “If a window or door is not installed properly, you can get drafts coming into the house,” explains Wayne Hutchinson, owner of Durham Windows and Doors. “I often get calls from people who have tried to install windows themselves or have used a friend or family member to come out and fix the installation.” Homeowners can save themselves the cost and trouble by having their windows and doors done properly the first time. Specializing only in windows and doors, Wayne and his staff have earned a reputation for their great work. Wayne will come to your house to measure and will bring with him samples of the windows that he has available. Not only can you shop from the comfort of your own home, but you can also see exactly how the windows will look. “After being in this business for 34 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Homeowners may also be tempted to hire a company that is willing to work under the table. The problem is that while they may save money short-term, it could cost them everything in the long run. If a worker is not insured and gets injured in your home, you are liable. Fly by night companies also won’t be around to honour warranties or help with any issues that come up. All of the installers at Durham Windows and Doors are staff, not subcontractors, are fully insured and have their WSIB certificates. E-books are the future and we need to be a part of that.” Although e-books are currently available for lending, five out of the big six publish- ing houses do not offer lending on their titles due to publisher’s concerns over ease of access and copying. That means library patrons can’t borrow titles from Hachette Group, Harper Collins, MacMillan, Pen- guin or Simon and Schuster. Random House titles are available, but the cost to libraries was increased this year, with cop- ies costing up to $85 each. “It’s important for patrons to understand so they don’t get frustrated,” Ms. Williams explained. “We don’t have access to the whole selec- tion, so neither do they. If that continues, it means those who have the money to pur- chase books will get full access, while those who don’t will not. That’s not a philosophy the library shares, we work hard to bridge the digital divide and this is putting it back up.” Library organizations across the country are currently working with publishers to create a solution. “Studies show that people who find e-books in libraries go on to buy other books by the author,” said Cathy Grant, CEO of the Pickering Library. “We want to make it easy for our users to have access, but the message we’re send- ing publishers is that it’s only going to ben- efit them.” For more information, visit www.urbanli- braries.org. TD Insurance offers the following advice to homeowners to ensure their home and valuables stay safe from severe weather: • Adhere to regular outdoor home mainte- nance: According to a recent TD Insurance poll of more than 1,000 Canadians 18 years of age and older, less than half of Canadians check for blockages to prevent water from draining away from the home, and only 36% remove weak branches and trees from their property. Did you know that downspouts should extend at least 1.8 metres from the foundation and face away from the house? To ensure your home is properly maintained walk around your home’s exterior to check for these red flags. • Know your valuables: Less than one-quarter of Canadians keep a detailed inventory of their valuables. Noting the serial numbers and dates purchased on your valuables will make claims easier. You can also photograph items to keep a record so that you’ll be well equipped to make an insurance claim. • Understand your insurance: The poll also revealed that less than one-third of respondents have read their insurance policies or know ex- actly what they’re covered for. For example, a lesser known fact is that if your roof leaks, the damage to the roof itself is usually not covered since it’s deemed a home maintenance issue, while the contents of your home would be. This is just one reason why you should read your pol- icy so that there aren’t any surprises. • Exercise caution: Thinking ahead and being prepared is a great approach to many situations, and particularly when it comes to unpredictable weather. In addition, Dave Minor, Vice President, TD Insurance says, “Depending on the severity of the weather warnings, you may want to consider moving your car under cover and bringing your lawn furniture inside.” www.newscanada.com How To Protect Your Home From Severe Weather ADVERTISING FEATURE SUMMER HOME LAWN & GARDEN du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 2 2 , 2 0 1 2 13 AP $799$999NOW 41x41 showerenclosure $399 60" ShowerDoor 60"X36" FRAMELESS GLASS SHOWER DOOR AND BASE 60"VA NITY AND DOUBLEMAPLE TOP 39½” Solid Wo od Va nity top and Ve sel Sink Reg $1895 $299Starting at “24 to 30”Solid Wo odVanities Reg $1895 Wa lk-In Tu b •29”wx38” high & the widths are 54 3/4” and also 58 3/4” •100% acrylic •Therapeutic & whirlpool jets •Double Drain systems for fast drain Includes rain shower head, 6 body jets, hand spry 124 BROCK ST. A day to honour our First Nations Ajax art gallery hosts Aboriginal Celebration Day AJAX -- Holding an Aboriginal Day was a goal of Esther Forde even before she opened Cultural Expressions Art Gallery in Pickering Village. And a chance meeting one night made it a partnership. “I feel that we owe a lot to our First Nations/Aboriginal community and I just felt we need to bring more focus and be aware,” she says. “There’s a lot they’ve done we need to be more appreciative of.” Forde says one night at the gallery, just before closing, area resident Kim Wheately from the Shawanaga First Nation Reserve walked in and the two started speaking. Before long, “we both realized we had a passion and a desire to do Aboriginal Cel- ebration Day.” The Ajax gallery hosts its third annual free event June 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the gallery. A special guest is Metis elder and master birch bark canoe builder Marcel Labelle, who will be bringing a canoe and demon- strating canoe making. Labelle has shown his craft at venues including the Smithso- nian National Museum of the American Indian and the Canadian Aboriginal Fes- tival. “We’re very fortunate to have him,” Forde says. Also coming to the gallery are The Red Spirit Singers and Native dancers. Those attending will be invited to dance with the drum, hear traditional stories and take part in craft-making activities. Art exhibitions will feature work by Brooklin’s Don Chase and Nancy Howell of Ajax. Cultural expressions is at 62 Old Kings- ton Rd. (at Linton Avenue, near Church Street and Kingston Road). Clarke Richardson’s urban dance team. But when he and other dancers from the school took the stage at Toronto’s Best High School Dance Competition in Toronto in 2010, they finished a disap- pointing 18 out of 18. “I wasn’t happy with the results,” he says. “My goal was to come back with a new team and win, that’s what made me want to create the team.” The team, D2E, came back strong in April, finishing second in the Toronto event, won by the St. Mary Catholic Second- ary School team from Pickering, Hi-Heyters, which picked up the $1,000 prize. Late last month D2E’s hard work continued to pay off as it won the intermediate division of the Stomp dance competition at the Sony Centre for the Per- forming Arts in Toronto. The team members are all Aja- cians and Rafi says more young people are welcome to get involved. “We know there’s a lot of undeveloped talent in Ajax,” he says. We just want to bring the resources to them.” Contact D2E at D2Edancecrew@gmail.com or by visiting their Facebook page, D2E-Dance-Crew. Brad Kelly - Sports Editor • bkelly@durhamregion.com SportsSports AJAX --Devin Shore has plans to enjoy the NHL draft this weekend in two parts. The first being as a fan during the open- ing round of the proceedings Friday night. The second being as a subject as the Ajax native and Whitby Fury forward is pro- jected to hear his name called sometime early on day two of the draft at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylva- nia. “The first round, it’s going to be really cool just to be there and be a part of it and just kind of be a fan for that part,” Shore said before heading down to the draft with his parents and brother. “On the Sat- urday when it comes to when the second round starts, you never know once you get there, but I am going to try and tell myself not to get uptight or expect any- thing. “Every team that steps up with a pick, you just kind of sit there, hope for the best and try and enjoy it. It’s something that not a lot guys my age get to do, so I am going to have fun with it,” he adds. Shore is coming off a fantastic cam- paign with the Fury, having led them in playoff scoring with 32 points in 23 games after a regular season in which he scored 29 goals and 58 points in just 41 games. On many nights Shore was a force at both ends of the ice and, more often than not, the most dangerous player on either team. His body of work didn’t go unnoticed either, evidenced by the fact he played for Team Canada East at the World Junior A challenge last fall and finished up the season with a couple OJHL awards, one being rookie of the year honours. Now Shore, who will embark on his freshmen season at the University of Maine in the fall, is looking ahead with nothing but excitement for what the future holds. “After you work so hard, to kind of just take one weekend off and get to the fun stuff, I am excited,” said Shore, who enters the draft ranked 59th by NHL Central Scouting among North American skat- ers. The lone OJHL player to participate in the NHL draft combine, like he hopes to do with the draft itself, Shore made the best of the experience, enjoying every minute he could. “Being the only guy from our league and one of the few guys playing tier II, there was no pressure. Compared to all the guys around me I was a tiny little fish in the sea,” he says. “I just enjoyed myself. It was cool to be a part of it. You look one way and you see (potential No. 1-pick Nail) Yakupov, you look the other and you see Brian Burke and the TSN crew. To just kind of be in the middle of it, instead of just looking at it on TV, it was an amazing experience.” Also on day two, Pickering’s Drake Caggiula, the most valuable player of the OJHL playoffs, could hear his name called. The Stouffville Spirit forward, who has committed to the University of North Dakota, enters the draft as the 185th- ranked skater in North America by NHL Central Scouting, up some 12 spots from his midseason ranking. Caggiula is a good bet to be a late-round pick due to his commitment to university as a team could take a chance on him and see how his game develops at the NCAA level before having to make a decision on his future. Caggiula led the Spirit to the OJHL championship and an appearance at the Dudley Hewitt Cup, scoring a team-high 37 points, including 17 goals, during an impressive playoff run. The duo helped Canada to a close 68-66 win over Argentina in the battle for third, marking the third consecutive time Canada has medaled at the bas- ketball championship. Canada finished the tourna- ment with a 4-1 record overall. On the march to bronze, Canada beat Puerto Rico 77-51, Colombia 98-67 and Argentina 75-68 to qualify for the playoff round. Their quest to play for gold was halted in the semifinals with a 66-62 loss to host Brazil. Keane finished the tournament with six points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Reynolds had 18 points, five rebounds and one assist. Keane is a six-foot-one guard from Ajax who attended Christian Faith Centre Academy in North Carolina. Reynolds is also a guard. Robinson selected for Canadian U18 hockey camp PICKERING -- After playing his rookie season in the OHL, Pickering’s Brandon Robinson is going to get a chance to play with some guys his own age. Robinson is among 40 players who have been invited to attend Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp, Aug. 3 to 6 at the MasterCard Centre in Toronto. The roster includes four goaltenders, 12 defencemen and 24 forwards. The players, born in 1995 and 1996, were selected by Hockey Canada head scout Kevin Prendergast, in consultation with head coach Todd Gill (Cardinal, Ont./Kingston, OHL) and assistant coaches Yanick Jean (Alma, Que./ Victoriaville, QMJHL) and Scott Walker (Cambridge, Ont./Guel- ph, Ont.). Prendergast evaluated the players dur- ing the 2011-12 season, following them along with numerous other candidates during league play, as well as during the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Windsor. “These players are the cream of the crop of under-18 talent in Canada, and it’s going to be exciting to see them battle for 22 roster spots,” Prendergast said. “As it is every year, there were some tough decisions to get down to 40, and they’ll be even tougher decisions to make to finalize the roster.” Robinson, the seventh overall pick by the Brampton Battalion in 2011, had 15-9-24 point totals in 57 games this season as a left wing. He played in the 2012 World Under-17 Challenge at Windsor, helping Team Ontario to a bronze medal. He contributed one goal and one assist for two points in three games. The U18 camp roster includes 17 players from the Ontario Hockey League, 13 from the Western Hockey League and 10 from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Of the 40 players who have been invited to the selection camp, 22 will be selected for the team, which will play in the 2012 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament, scheduled for Aug. 13 to 18 in Piestany, Slovakia and Breclav, Czech Republic. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 2 2 , 2 0 1 2 17 AP Shore even-keeled heading to NHL draft in Pittsburgh SABRINA BYRNES/METROLAND FILE PHOTO WHITBY -- Devin Shore will find an NHL home this weekend as the Ajax native and Whitby Fury forward is expected to be a second or third round pick at the entry draft in Pittsburgh. The team faced the Manitoba provincial champion Manitoba Spartans for the bronze medal. The Eclipse won the bronze with set wins of 30-28, 25-18. Team members include Court- ney Chiasson, Sheridan Mason, Brina Alsmeyer, Willa Zhu, Kristen Hylton, Cassis Varlow, Abby Gan- zhorn, Nareesa Nathoo and Kar- lina Domingo. Coaches are Vicki Gallagher, Natasha Khan and head coach Arif Nathoo. Submitted photo DURHAM -- The Eclipse volleyball team won the bronze medal at the 2012 Canadian National Volleyball Tournament in Toronto. Pestell medals at world golf qualifier HUNTSVILLE -- Pickering resi- dent Connor Pestell put his golf skills to the test at the Veritas world golf championship quali- fying tournament held in Hunts- ville. This tournament, run by the Canadian Junior Golf Associa- tion, welcomes the best golfers from across the province in their attempt to qualify for the Veritas world golf championships held later this summer in Los Angeles, California. Pestell, 10, put together an excel- lent round of 77 to bring home the bronze medal. His round, which included four birdies and a career best 218-yard drive, fell just short of the playoff for first place and an automatic entry to the champion- ship. He is hoping to get invited as an alternate depending on the num- ber of qualifiers from other areas of the country. Pestell attends school at Maple Ridge Public School and is cur- rently in Grade 5. He plays golf around the Pickering area and does a good portion of his practice at The Devil’s Den Golf Centre. AJAX -- The Ajax Ironheads will open their best-of-five Jr. B lacrosse playoff series with a pair of games in Akwesasne this week- end. After that, the remainder of the schedule gets a little tricky. Games one and two of the East- ern Conference quarter-final will be played in Akwesasne on Satur- day at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Game 3 of the series will be back at the Ajax Community Centre on Friday, June 29 at 8 p.m. The remaining two games, if needed, are still being worked out. Because of the Sunday, July 1 holiday, floor time isn’t available at the ACC. So, the teams are looking at playing a doubleheader for games four and five on Saturday, June 30 at 2 and 7 p.m. Neither team wants that as an option, so the Ironheads are look- ing to secure floor time some- where else for a fifth game to spread the final three games out over three days. The Ironheads enter the play- offs as the eighth seed with a 7-13- 0 record, while Akwesasne was the cream of the crop, finishing a conference best 19-1-0 to earn the first seed. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 2 2 , 2 0 1 2 19 AP OPEN HOUSE SAT AND SUN 2-4PM 49 GLENHILL AVE, TORONTO Don’t Miss This One.
