Grade 10 literacy results about same as last year across both boards DURHAM -- The results for high school literary tests are out and both of Dur- ham’s school boards did better than the provincial average. The Education Quality and Account- ability Office released the 2012 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test results on June 14. The school-by-school results revealed the Durham District School Board had 83 per cent of its first-time eligible, ful- ly-participating students success- fully complete the test, the same as in 2011. The Durham Catholic District School Board saw a better result this year where 85 per cent succeeded, compared to 83 per cent in 2011. The provincial average is 82. The one-day test, which assesses whether Grade 10 students have the reading and writing skills they should have acquired by the end of Grade 9, is a requirement for students to graduate high school. A number of schools in the Durham public board have dropped from last year, including Henry Street High, which went from 86 to 77, Brock High, which went from 78 to 69 and G.L. Roberts Col- legiate, which went from 63 to 52, the lowest in Durham. The public board’s superintendent of education and programs, Luigia Ayotte, says the board takes into consideration a number of factors when receiving the results, such as the number of English language learners and applied learners who wrote the test. “We also don’t defer as many students as the Province,” she says. “We encour- age every student to participate.” But the board does take the results very seriously, she says, and along with report card data and other measurements, uses the literacy test results to learn how to best enhance student achievement. For schools that do well and those that don’t, the board will create programs, support and training to meet the stu- dents’ specific needs for the next school year. “Even if you’re at 90 per cent, you have 10 per cent of those students to focus on,” she says. Some improved results include Ajax High, which went from 78 to 83, J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate, which went from 76 to 80, Pickering High, from 85 to 91, and Uxbridge Secondary, which went from 84 to 91. Despite Cartwright High’s drop from 96 to 93, it’s the highest in the board. In the Durham Catholic board, the big- gest jump was at Monsignor John Perey- ma Catholic Secondary School, where the percentage of successful students went from 69 to 76. The highest-achieving school in the Durham Catholic board was All Saints Catholic Secondary, which went from 89 to 92. In order to meet this requirement, a study is underway to meet the environmental assessment (EA)requirements,by developing a servicing plan based on environmental considerations, as well as technical and financial efficiencies. The Study consists of three projects: 1.Water and Wastewater Infrastructure (e.g.watermains, sewers, pumping stations, reservoirs); 2.Tr ansportation (e.g.roads, bridges, cycling paths/lanes and sidewalks in Regional road rights-of-way) and Tr ansit Infrastructure; and 3. Service facilities (e.g.works yard). The study is being conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Municipal Engineer s Association’s Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) document (October 2000, as amended in 2007).The Environmental Assessment for the Study will also be fulfilling the requirements of both the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act (EAA) and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA). The three projects that form part of the Study must meet different Schedules under the Class EA process, as follows: 1.Schedule B –Wa ter and wastewater infrastructure 2. & 3. Schedule C –Tr ansportation infrastructure, and service facilities Ontario Infrastructure &Lands Corporation (OILC) Class EA OILC,formerly Ontario Realty Corp.(ORC), has landholdings within the study area;these landholdings are identified on the key map (locations are approximate). These lands may be considered for disposition (e.g., easements or transfers for the construction of infrastructure) based on the preferred solution(s)recommended in the Class EA Study. The portion of the projects proposed within OILC lands are also being assessed in accordance with the requirements of the OILC Class EA Process for Realty (Non-Electricity Projects). Public Information Centre (PIC) No. 2 All interested stakeholders are invited to provide input pertaining to the three projects. PIC No. 2 will provide an opportunity for interested stakeholders to review an evaluation of the alternatives, the recommended alternatives (alignments, sites), and next steps, and to provide feedback concerning the study. The PIC will consist of an informal drop-in centre with display boards.Representatives from both the Region of Durham and the consultant, GENIVAR, will be present to answer questions and discuss the study progression to date. Project information can be viewed on the Durham Region website,www.durham.ca/cdeap, or the City of Pickering’s Seaton Community website, www.pickering.ca/en/cityhall/services.asp. The protest was part of a larger, Canada-wide campaign organized by Leadnow and aimed at convincing 13 Conservative MPs to abstain from voting on the bill, or vote against, in order to successfully defeat it in a Conservative majority government. “We want it stopped and broken into its proper components,” Mr. Acheson continued. “We don’t know what the implications and impacts of these legislations are. These things need to be aired, properly debated and the pub- lic advised, that’s all we’re asking.” Fellow Pickering resident Brenda Putt-Rogers came out with her husband and two-year old daughter. “You can’t agree with this bill if you under- stand what it stands for, it’s so broad and anti everything Canadians believe in,” she explained, noting it was important to bring her daughter. “I think it’s important from a young age to be exposed to how democracy is supposed to work. This is her first political protest but it probably won’t be her last. We believe Canada can be a better place than this.” Matt Redding, 22, who volunteers regularly with the Green Party, had been following the controversy over C-38 and was happy to discov- er there would be protests taking place. “I think it’s an absolute farce of the democratic process,” he said, noting he had already written a letter to Mr. Chisu about the issue. “The things included in this bill deserve debate on their own, these are very consequential issues that need to be studied as part of the democratic process. It’s important more people take notice and realize what’s happening in government because this isn’t the Canada I recognize.” A similar protest was also held at the office of Pickering/Ajax MP Chris Alexander. Voting on the bill began on June 13, with the Green Party, NDP and Liberals working togeth- er to put more than 870 amendment motions on the floor. Voting is expected to wrap up by Fri- day, June 15. It was great to see your editorial on Jan de Vries since I was also in Normandy in 2004 when he was presented with the Legion of Honour. Although it is fashionable nowadays among some Canadians to talk of Canadi- ans as peacekeepers rather than warriors, back in the day when Jan de Vries was fighting, Canadians were known as fierce, indomitable warriors, especially the Para- chute Battalion. In fact it has long been mentioned in various publications that when German defenders heard they were confronted by the Canadian paratoopers, many were trembling in their boots. This was born out by my stepfather, the brigadier whose brigade included the Canadian Parachute Battalion, telling me and others that when he wanted a really nasty, daunting task accomplished he sent in his Canadians. He knew they would get the job done even if half of them were killed doing it. As your editorial tells us, “By mid- day the battalion had accomplished all objectives.” David R. Filbey-Haywood Pickering Lack of food services at Ajax hospital disappointing To the editor: My husband recently had surgery and I had the opportunity to be a visitor at Rouge Valley’s Ajax hospital site. I haven’t been in the hospital for a few years, so I admit that I was impressed with the renovations to the hospital. It’s mod- ern and professional looking. But I was shocked to see the lack of a cafeteria or food facilities in the hospital. I ventured in the direction of the caf- eteria, following the signs, only to find a small seating area of about 100 chairs. There is a Tim Hortons and a small food service which was closed. I wondered how this small area could accommodate the staff as well as hospital visitors. My question was answered when I real- ized that Tim Hortons only supplied cof- fee, bagels and doughnuts. It also closed at 7 p.m. At dinner time, they offered only leftover doughnuts and muffins. The food bistro was open at lunch only. The food offered was limited and was not appetizing. This would explain the lack of lineups for food. I asked the staff mem- bers what other options they had for food and they said none. I feel sorry for any visitors who do not have a car and who have no other food options. Other hospitals have 24-hour Tim Hor- tons and a full-service cafeteria. Did the hospital executive run out of money? I sincerely hope that they are budgeting and planning for a full-service cafeteria at the hospital. The patients, staff and visitors not only deserve it, they need it. Canadian census figures from 2011 reveal that Durham Region is home to the highest percentage of baby boomers in the GTA, and sits above provincial and nation- al averages, with 29.3 per cent of residents falling into the 45 to 64 years age group. For some, that might evoke images of kindly old folks living out their senior years in relative peace and quiet, tending to gardens or taking up lawn bowling. For others, say the so-called Millennial Gen- eration (born 1985-2004), it might instead signal that those boomers we’ve all been hearing about for so long and so often will finally make some suitable room for them. But for the boomers themselves (born 1947-1966), nearly one-third of Durham Region’s overall population, the data should raise some concern about what might await them: the ‘silver tsunami’ begins this year with the first of them turn- ing 65. The good news is that there are already discussions underway in various quar- ters around Durham Region to meet the demand created by such vastly changing demographics. In the coming years -- which will sure- ly arrive sooner than everyone thinks -- aging Durham residents will require smaller housing stock; they’ll need an exponential increase in supportive hous- ing, long-term care and medical services. One small example of the foresight and planning being undertaken to deal with Durham’s aging population is Commu- nity Care Durham, one of 10 local agen- cies that is working with other groups to develop an integration strategy to address future demand. The group is looking at cluster-based models for community sup- port and health services for residents to handle the expected explosion in demand for such services. Today’s boomers remain active and engaged, are health-conscious and more fit than ever. They’re living longer and continue to contribute to society in vari- ous ways, through volunteer work, neigh- bourhood projects, political activism and more. In the simplest terms, they’re busy and engaged and vital contributors in munici- palities across Durham Region. And they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. The colour of Durham’s future is silver. Discussions and planning taking place today throughout Durham are crucial to ensuring that suitable programs and ser- vices are developed and implemented, that Durham’s aging population is able to continue making contributions to their communities, and that sufficient funding is provided to serve such a large propor- tion of Durham’s future population. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 1 5 , 2 0 1 2 6 P du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 1 5 , 2 0 1 2 7 APEnjoy a With Essential Oil Blends from NOW ®Solutions Combine the natural essence of NOW Essential Oils. There are lots of creepy crawly insects and winged pests outside, but they often pay no attention to your door and will come right in and make themselves at home. Before you know it, you could have a colony of carpenter ants taking up residence on your patio or around your deck, wasps building a nest under your eaves or in your chimney, spiders that think that the corners of your room are the perfect place for their webs, or fleas that Fido brings in that have no problem biting you too. Those insects are just the tip of the iceberg. You could also have infestations of cockroaches, moths, caterpillars, centipedes, earwigs, hornets, cluster flies, moths and more. Leap Pest Control can help you regain control of your home and eliminate these insects from your life. The provide effective inspection and monitoring techniques to help protect your home from pest intruders. Their goal is to provide and sustain a pest-free living environment for you and your family. The company also uses unmarked vehicles to prevent your neighbours from learning of your pest problems. When you call Leap Pest Control for help, their well trained and experienced technicians will come to your home and assess the situation. They will then recommend a treatment plan that will help eradicate your pest problem. Each plan is customized based on the pests that you are having problems with. Wasp and hornet nests must be treated to prevent them from breeding and starting new colonies in and around your home. Spiders like to spend time outside before entering your home, and treating your eaves, sofit areas and underneath the aluminum siding will help keep the population under control. Other pests can damage your home and need to be treated immediately. Carpenter ants may start out in moist wood, including rotting trees, stumps logs and wood boards, but can quickly start in on your shed, deck and home. Cockroaches can enter your home via grocery bags, laundry, furniture and people. They like to live where there is warmth, moisture and a viable food source. If left, they can become a health hazard, transmitting diseases and bacteria, causing food poisoning and worsening of allergies and asthma. Stop sharing your home and outdoor space with pests and call Leap Pest Control! For more information, please call (416) 805-3944 or visit the website at www.leappestcontrol.com. Energy Minister Chris Bentley visited Verid- ian Connections in Ajax June 11 to talk about the Province’s smart grid and its increasing intelligence. “Together we’re building throughout this province a reliable, modern, clean and affordable system of power,” Mr. Bentley said. “We’re taking advantage of technology.” Ontario’s smart grid allows for better con- trol of its energy supply. “Families and businesses will get huge sav- ings as we use the information that the smart meters have collected for their advantage,” Mr. Bentley said. “For the system, it helps us reduce the amount of power we have on standby for potential peak use, that’s a big saving. It also allows us to better manage the system.” Using Ontario’s smart grid technology and new devices, software and applications developed by Energate Inc., people can con- trol their home energy use from anywhere at any time. Forgot to turn off a light or appli- ance before you left? No problem, there’s an app for that. The technology will be piloted in up to 1,000 homes in Durham Region and beyond. “Consumers can manage home energy use more effectively and reduce their energy bill,” said Energate CEO Niraj Bhargava. “Previous pilots here in Ontario have shown that we can save energy -- up to 30 per cent on your energy bill.” Veridian president and CEO Michael Ange- meer said his company is pleased to pilot the technology, along with five other distribution companies. “Veridian is committed to providing its customers with the tools and information they need to manage their electricity use,” he said. “As tomorrow’s smart grid is developed, Veridian customers will draw their electric- ity from a secure, more flexible, more reliable and more efficient system that will help to improve the environment at the same time." The project is expected to create more than 40 jobs. It is one of several supported by Ontario's smart grid fund, which provides $50 million over four years to encourage innova- tion in the Province's energy sector. In Ajax, Mr. Bentley was joined by Ajax- Pickering MPP Joe Dickson, Pickering-Scar- borough East MPP Tracy MacCharles, Verid- ian chairman and Pickering Councillor Doug Dickerson and Veridian board members including Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan and Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. The Pickering native works at WOIO, the CBS affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio, and has interviewed stars from Antonio Ban- deras to Kate Beckinsale. “I love meeting new people and I love the fact that this is fun,” he told us earli- er this year. “Everybody in life has a pas- sion and if you can turn that passion into a career, you’re laughing.” Van Vliet is now laughing all the way to his trophy case after scooping up two local Emmy awards earlier this month. The National Association of Television Arts and Sciences -- Lower Great Lakes Chapter held its 43rd annual Emmy Awards dinner the weekend of June 2 and 3 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Van Vliet was recognized with awards for Per- former/Host and in the category of Best Sports/Single News Story. “(The latter was) for my story about Gregory Iron, a 25-year-old profession- al wrestler from Cleveland who wrestles despite being born with cerebral palsy,” Van Vliet states in an e-mail. Pickering artist fills a void with art friends, expression It’s endlessly fascinating to dis- cover all the different ways artists come to making art. Five years ago, after the recent passing of her mother, with her husband busily engaged in his own business and finding herself an empty nester, Pickering painter Bonnie Lusty needed to fill a hole of missing close engagement with others. So she joined the Ajax Creative Arts group -- where her mom had been president and an artist-par- ticipant for many years -- to take classes and make art in the com- pany of like-minded individuals. Originally a hair stylist and makeup artist, Lusty had started the transition to “art maker” a half dozen years earlier by involving herself in the craft of folk art paint- ing on household objects, the training for which gave her facility with paint application and design sensibilities -- even if using preset patterns and designs. Throwing herself into numerous classes and workshops, at the ACA and as far afield as the U.S., Lusty explored and experimented with a variety of media and a panorama of sub- ject matter before finding her own voice and turning out paintings in watercolour, mixed media and ink in a reduced range of subject mat- ter that meant the most to her. And the hole in her life slowly filled. When she felt her work had reached professional standards, Lusty began involving herself in the regular group showings at Ajax Creative Arts, in her own booth at the Camp Samac outdoor shows near Oshawa and in various small local art events. She sells quite readily, especially her small ink abstracts, a series of mixed media/ watercolour paintings of koi fish in ponds and several floral series. Lusty’s present focus is on her mixed media works, in which she builds layers of acrylic gel and watercolour glazes, adding in flowers, spattering on colours, etc. as she goes, experiment- ing and watching for and accept- ing “happy accidents” and letting each piece evolve. She now feels happily confident with her artis- tic expression and loves the three days per week she spends paint- ing and socializing with cohorts at the ACA. If you would like to connect with this newly accomplished painter, e-mail her at bonnielusty@live.ca. Allan O’Marra is a professional artist living and working in Ajax. Allan’s Artists Brad Kelly - Sports Editor • bkelly@durhamregion.com SportsSports Pickering High School student secures basketball scholarship AJAX -- It should come as no surprise, but add another example to the long and growing list of occasions when a mother knew what was best for her daughter. The latest inclusion comes courtesy of the Campbell household, where mom, Claudia, had an inkling that her daugh- ter, Taijah, would be better at basketball than soccer. Her intuition proved cor- rect recently when Taijah signed a letter of intent with Virginia Tech University, where she will be on a basketball scholar- ship for the next four years beginning in the fall. “My mom was a firm believer and always thought I should play basketball,” recalls the younger Campbell of being encouraged to make the switch from kick- ing a soccer ball to dribbling a basket- ball. “She supported me playing soccer and sacrificed for me to do whatever, but she always knew, I guess you could call it motherly instincts, she just knew I should be playing basketball. “I kind of agreed to it that maybe she was right.” The Ajax resident was a late bloomer in basketball, not taking it seriously until Grade 10. Campbell started high school at Ajax, but transferred to Pickering to be part of their basketball program. It was after playing in a tournament in North Carolina with her club team, the Advan- tage Titans, that notions of pursuing bas- ketball at the next level came to light. “I came back and I was getting letters” from school in the United States, says the 18 year old. “I really didn’t think I was that good, so I was a little shocked that I could actually go somewhere with this. I think that’s when it hit me that I could take this further.” By the time she reached her senior sea- son at Pickering, Campbell had 10-20 suit- ors looking to entice her to their NCAA program. She narrowed it down to two, Virginia Tech and Pepperdine, visiting the campus of both schools. It was the trip to Virginia Tech that ultimately sealed her commitment. “Virginia Tech just seemed really com- fortable, like I had already been there. It seemed like a big family,” she says. “The thing that stood out to me was that a lot of people who worked at the school had actually gone there and loved the atmo- sphere and decided to return. That really stood out to me and I liked that.” An athletic player who can run the floor and is defensively strong, Campbell will fit right into the Hokies program, says coach Dennis Wolff. “We are very happy to welcome Taijah to the Virginia Tech family,” he was quoted as saying on the school’s website. “She is an athletic forward with very good defen- sive instincts.” Listed as six foot three, Campbell has provincial, national and international experience, representing Canada at the Pan-Am Games. She helped Pickering to the LOSSA championship this season. When she’s not on the court, Campbell will be in the classroom majoring in psy- chology, hoping to be a sports psycholo- gist one day. Like anyone on the verge of a new experience, she is excited but appre- hensive at the same time. “I’m really excited. I just want to get there and meet everybody and start train- ing,” she says, adding, “But I’m really ner- vous because it’s different down there. I’m so far from home, I don’t have my mom to come back home to after a hard practice or if I’m stressed out about something. “But it’s exciting because I’m growing up.” Sports Briefs Pickering Swim Club coach Anne Ottenbrite to receive jubilee medal PICKERING -- Anne Ottenbrite has been selected on behalf of Canada’s Governer General David Johnston to be the recipient of the Queen Eliza- beth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. This new commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anni- versary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. This medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour the Queen for her service to this country. At the same time, it serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. Ottenbrite, a Port Perry resident and coach at the Pickering Swim Club, will be among all Order of Canada members invited to receive the Diamond Jubilee Medal for significant achieve- ment and remarkable service. She will be joined by several former vice-regal representatives and other notable Canadians who will be a part of the presentations. Pierson won a unanimous decision over Jake Hecht at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida, stopping a two-fight los- ing streak and putting himself in prime position to be named to another UFC card later this year in Canada. With an offensive attack focused on his striking ability, Pierson was able to keep most of the fight off the mat after a precarious start and landed sev- eral big-time punches on Hecht throughout the three-round affair. Despite being taken down briefly to the canvas for a sec- ond time in the fight during the third round, Pierson recovered well and after the bell rang, each of the three judges had scored the fight 29-28 in favour of Pier- son, whose training roots have extended into Oshawa over the years. Pierson said after the fight his focus now is on being named to the UFC 152 card that will be held in Toronto on Sept. 22. The win over Hecht was Pier- son’s first since Dec. 2010, his UFC debut in a fight against Matt Riddle. Two bouts in between saw him lose to Jake Ellenberger and Dong Hyun Kim. Had he lost the fight to Hecht, the possibility existed that it would have been Pierson’s last bout with the company as he originally signed a four-fight contract and he would have been looking for a renewal with three straight losses to his name. Pierson squares his UFC record after victory du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 1 5 , 2 0 1 2 19 AP DURHAM -- The Ajax-Pickering Dolphins OVFL teams met the Brantford Bisons on their home field, and came away with wins at all three levels. The bantam team seemed like a team with a mission. From the beginning to end they controlled the game against the Bisons, exe- cuting with precision and dexter- ity. Every play seemed to have been scripted and played to perfection, with the final result a 33-2 win for the Dolphins. This was a total team effort with everyone contributing to the win. The team is led by head coach Stephen Charles and his coaching staff. The unbeatable Dolphins junior OV team once again proved why its has emerged as one of the best in the division. Led by one of the best coaching staffs, including head coach Tony McIntosh, this team continues to roll over its oppo- nents. The final score was 62-14 for the Dolphins. DB Sharlon Smith has been selected by the league as the Player of the Week. Smith did it all this week and also scored two defensive touchdowns. The senior OV team once again sealed a win for the Dolphins with a score of 28-20. The head coach is James More. The peewees had a close game against the Cambridge Lions, but came up short. The Dolphins dem- onstrated great teamwork against a formidable opponent. The Dol- phins watched the clock run out as the game ended with a score of 13-12 for the Lions. There were some great offensive plays, but the defence played their best game of the season, with major tackles and blocks. This young Dolphins team continues to develop and play as a team, thanks to the coaching staff led by head coach Jay McBride. The Dolphins OVFL teams’ next game are on Saturday, June 16, against the Markham Raiders. The peewee OMFL team plays Friday, June 15 at the home field at Kinsmen Park. The game starts at 8 p.m. against Mississauga. The Dolphins house league also runs concurrent with the rep league. There were 98 teams from across the country competing for the coveted title of nation- al champions. This was the first time that Volleyball Can- ada combined the eastern and western championship into one event. On the opening day, DRVC defeated the Hurricanes Black (Halton Region), Libellules (Quebec City) and Canuck Stuff (Calgary) to win its pool. On day two, DRVC defeated Defensa (Burlington) and Mav- erick Ambush (Ottawa) before losing their only match of the weekend to Shock Volleyball Club (Winnipeg). DRVC fin- ished in second place in its pool on day two and advanced to the final eight in Tier 1, Division 1. At the elimination playoffs on Saturday, DRVC faced a strong CW Dinos Red team from Cal- gary in the quarter-finals and prevailed in two straight sets (25-21 and 25-22). The semifinals pitted DRVC against the Aurora Storm, gold medalists at the Ontario provin- cial championships over DRVC in April. With a combination of excellent defence and a potent attack, DRVC was able to defeat its rival in two straight sets, 25-12 and 25-19. The finals were fitting, as DRVC, last year’s eastern Cana- dian champion, faced Shock from Winnipeg, the western champ for two straight years. The finals were an excellent display of volleyball on both sides with DRVC prevailing in a tiebreaker in the third set (25- 19, 16-25, 15-8). The DRVC team, based out of Whitby, consists of Kristen Bond, Laura Duncan, Kelsey Fuchs, Carley Gougeon, Brier Kaake, Cassie Perau, Alisha Poole, Abbigail Prins, Emma Somerville, Kersti Sorra, Nicole Taylor and Tia Wiseman. The team is coached by Mark Somerville, Kent Howe and David Bond. Advertising FeAtureSpring Home Lawn & garden Dreaming of a backyard designed for outdoor gatherings of family and friends, elegant evening dinners, or an escape from a busy life? Make your dreams a reality with the help of Arnts Topsoil: The Landscape Supplier. There are 10 basic steps to the installation of interlocking paving stones. The first step is to draw a diagram showing measurements, grade elevations and proposed planters, steps, walls and paving stone areas. A member of the Arnts sales staff will help you calculate the amount and cost of the materials for your project. The next step is to prepare the area by marking the digging location. Excavate the required depth depending on the application. Fill the area with a well-draining base material, usually a combination of gravel and sand. Compact the gravel with a place compactor in 2” deep intervals. Spread a 1” layer of coarse sand on the compacted base and level. Lay the paving stones on the coarse sand, staggering the joints for stability. Mark and cut any pavers that do not fit along the edges and around objects. Install brick edge restraints along the perimeter of the paving stones to prevent the pavers from shifting. Sweep the surface of the paving stones and compact with a gas plate compactor to settle the pavers into the layer of coarse sand. Finish the project by sweeping fine sand into the joints of the pavers. Visit Arnts Topsoil in Whitby at 4400 Halls Rd. N. for a FREE UNILOCK’ DIY Seminar on Saturday June 23rd, at 10:00am. No registration required, come rain or shine. Black is not only a great shade on you—it's also a great shade for your home, say specialists in this field. The stylish finish is especially perfect in the kitchen—and can be seen in everything from kitchen appliances, to hardware… and now even the faucet. Make your kitchen feel just as good as you do in your favourite LBD with the magic of black. Appliance Accents Stainless steel appliances exude the aura of a high- e n d , professional kitchen. But the modern stainless appliance wouldn't be complete without rich, black accents. From iron-work grates and griddles on stainless stoves, to refrigerators with black ice makers and handles, the combination of black and stainless conveys professionalism and power. A Dramatic Finish The sink is, without a doubt, the most used area in the kitch- en. From filling cups to washing dishes, rinsing fruits and vegetables to replenishing Fido's bowl, the sink is used doz-ens of times per day. That said, it should be the first place we consider when it comes to décor… not just an afterthought. Since it's such a central area, why not give your sink a bit of character by adding a dramatic black faucet? Very popular is the Arbor kitchen faucet in a Matte Black finish from Moen. It provides a streamlined appearance that coordinates per-fectly with black or stainless/black kitchen appliances and accessories. The collection also features the Moen Reflex system on pullout and pulldown kitchen faucets. Reflex al-lows for unmatched performance that offers smooth opera-tion, easy movement and secure retraction. Sophisticated Surfaces Countertops play a large role in the function of a kitchen, setting the stage for food preparation, the use and display of everything from toasters to tea pots, and activities from surf-ing the internet to entertaining guests. Black granite coun-tertops can be a great addition to an already sophisticated kitchen. And, the options are far more extensive than basic black, ranging from midnight black to a more mixed shade, with secondary colours of grey, white, or even bolder hues, like sapphire. Dramatic Radiance Light fixtures can often set the tone for the entire room, both by the light they give off and the look of the fixture. Create a new appearance for your kitchen and dining area by add-ing a bold choice in lighting. Chandeliers with vintage-style ironwork, strings of black glass or crystal beads, or even dra-matic black prints, can be a beautiful accent to an elegant kitchen—the pièce de résistance to tie the whole room to-gether. With just a few stylish, dark-hued accents, you can create a kitchen that stands out, instead of simply blending in.
