Arunas Pleckaitis, left, vice-president of Enbridge Gas Distribution, planted a tree with Jeff Surtees, CEO of Trout Unlimited Canada, at the Greenwood Discovery Pavillion April 24. TARA HATHERLY thatherly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Duffins Creek is getting a make- over, thanks to Enbridge Gas Distribution, Trout Unlimited Canada and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. On April 24, the organizations announced the Duffins Creek Renewal program to a packed house at Ajax’s Greenwood Conserva- tion Authority. Enbridge pledged volunteer support and $200,000 to fund the first year of the five-year project. “As Canadians, we sometimes take for grant- ed the abundance of natural beauty we’ve been blessed with, and Duffins Creek is such a treasure,” said Arunas Pleckaitis, vice-presi- dent of Enbridge Gas Distribution. If the answer is no, you’re not alone. “People know what to do, but they don’t take the time to do it,” says Ivan Ciuciura, Durham’s director of emergency manage- ment. “Everybody’s busy with their day-to- day lives ... but when it comes down to it you are your own first responder.” The Region of Durham is observing National Emergency Preparedness Week from May 6 to 12 and Mr. Ciuciura is hop- ing to give local residents a nudge by pro- moting simple ways to be prepared. For example, keep your gas tank at least one quarter to one half full at all times in case you need to evacuate. Put a few cases of water in the basement or buy extra canned goods when you’re grocery shopping. Keep a bit of cash in the house in case ATM machines go down during a black- out. “We often talk about having an emer- gency kit ready, but you don’t even need to be that organized,” Mr. Ciuciura says. “There are really easy things you can do that would help you in an emergency.” There are two main scenarios local resi- dents could expect to face in the event of a natural or man-made disaster -- having to quickly evacuate or being stuck inside their home for hours or days, possibly without utilities. The Durham Emergency Management Office offers information online and in hard copy to help residents prepare for both possibilities. Tools include preparing a family emer- gency plan, how to pack a 72-hour emer- gency kit, items that should be in your first aid kit and how to prepare your pets. DEMO is responsible for co-ordinating a response to disasters such as severe win- ter storms, floods, tornados, train derail- ments, chemical spills, lengthy blackouts and explosions. The office has someone on call 24/7 to initiate emergency notifications, contact Region staff, act as a liaison to the Province and serve as an initial point of contact for police. While disasters are few and far between in this part of Ontario, they do happen. Mr. Ciuciura points to the massive black- out of 2003, last summer’s tornado in God- erich and six local train derailments in the past 15 years as examples. “Any one of those train derailments could have been a major evacuation if there had been chemicals on board,” he says. DEMO offers a free “Are you Ready?” pamphlet that includes checklists. To get a copy, visit www.durham.ca/demo or call 905-430-2792. At a meeting on April 25, Andy Campbell of Parks Canada presented a new study area for the planned park to members of the Rouge Alliance. The study area fulfills a long-expressed dream of a park stretch- ing from Lake Ontario to the Oak Ridg- es Moraine, but contains almost no land in Pickering despite sitting beside thou- sands of acres that were expropriated for a Pickering airport in the 1970s. “I’m always hopeful but I didn’t expect it because I’ve mentioned it in the past and didn’t get much response,” said Pickering Councillor Peter Rodrigues, who sits on the Rouge Alliance, of Pickering’s feder- al lands not being included. “Maybe 20 per cent of the federal lands are in Toronto and Markham and that portion they are utilizing. Although there’s nothing being looked at in the Pickering area now, I’m hope- ful that they might because they could even put a massive air- port there and still have tons of land.” Mr. Campbell also assured the group that the federal government won’t force land- owners to sell, as land expropriation is no longer something Parks Canada can do. “We have no intent. We have no legal authority,” Mr. Campbell said, noting Parks Canada would consider “willing buyer, willing seller” opportunities in the future, particularly in “priority” areas. The idea of private property within the park is indicative of its unique make-up, as it will also include municipal roads, hydro corridors and other infrastructure not normally found in national parks. C a n a d a ’ s National Parks Act recognizes one stan- dard, a “wilderness ecological standard” which rules out sewer lines, roads, forest fire control or continuing agricultural uses in national parks. “We’re nowhere near that,” said Michael Chong, an MP representing the federal government on the Alliance. “All of these things (in the existing park) violate the act.” Instead of amending the act to water down the stan- dard, which rais- es “alarm bells” for other parks, a national urban park will need a new act with a dif- ferent standard, Mr. Chong said. Roads and road allowances in the park will still be municipally owned. Planning for the national park will con- tinue and consultations with the public are expected to begin this summer. -with files from Mike Adler, Toronto Community News ciTy Pickering federal lands not included in Rouge Park study area i’m always hopeful, but I didn’t expect it because I’ve mentioned it in the past and didn’t get much response. Free Unilock DIY Seminar Saturday April 28th at 10:00 AM Whitby Location “While Duffins Creek is an essential part of the local eco-system, unfortunately it is suffering from increased urban pressure, land use practices and climate change. As a result, water quality has diminished over time and wildlife has decreased.” The Duffins Creek watershed covers 283 square kilometres through Ajax, Pickering, Uxbridge, Markham and Whitchurch- Stouffville. The watershed originates in the Oak Ridges Moraine, and is home to approximately 45 fish species, three of which are endangered. The restoration initiative aims to improve water quality, create a healthier eco-sys- tem, improve native plant and animal diversity, and foster a sense of community connection and pride. “We want this watershed to look as good as it does now, or better, 20 years from now,” said Jeff Surtees, Trout Unlimited Canada CEO. The project involves tree plantings, small dam removals and streamside improve- ments, as well as landowner stewardship and community outreach programs. Fol- lowing the announcement, volunteers planted trees to kick-start the campaign. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish praised the ini- tiative. “The health of Duffins Creek is absolute- ly essential, not just to the Town of Ajax, we’re downstream where it all ends, but it’s essential to all the municipalities that are part of Duffins watershed,” he said. “A healthy Duffins Creek means a healthy community.” Uxbridge Mayor and TRCA chairwom- an Gerri Lynn O’Connor said she’s excited and grateful for the project. “TRCA is proud that Duffins Creek water- shed still has aquatic communities which are healthy enough to attract the attention of TUC,” she said. “The value of this par- ticular partnership is not just the funding, but the collaboration. TUC brings exper- tise and a network of community mem- bers, including the angling community, to this program.” Mr. Pleckaitis encouraged other busi- nesses to join the campaign. “We welcome other companies that share our views on sustainability and cor- porate responsibility to join us by support- ing this important project in the years to come,” he said. Community Please show courtesy in parking lots To the editor: I am a mother of an infant and park in the ‘Mother with Child’ parking spots at local stores. On several occasions, I have returned to my vehicle to find that someone has parked too close to my car. Mothers or parents park in these spots for a reason. Although they are the same size as a reg- ular parking spot these are convenient to use when the weather is bad. I feel that people should give these cars more room on either side to allow us to place car seats or children into our cars. I would like the people of Durham Region to be more courteous when parking in parking lots beside these parking spaces. C.D Williams Oshawa FeedbaCk Police dog did his job in apprehending suspect To the editor: Re: ‘Those being attacked tend to fight back’, letter to the editor, durhamregion. com, April 9, 2012. I agree that a well-trained German shep- herd tearing your flesh must be terrible. But I wasn’t there to witness the event and I don’t imagine the recent letter writer was either. But, the standard procedure for all police dog handlers is to warn, usually several times, a fleeing person. It gives that person a clear chance to stop running. One could get caught up in the moment and not hear the warnings, but you can’t say you didn’t hear the barking dog. If I was in a situation where I’m trying to outsmart the cops and a police dog comes into the fray, the police win. Period. The dog did his job. The officer did his job. The fleeing suspect, well, the next time he hears a command and a barking police dog, I think the cops might win again. Brian Wilkins Oshawa oxyContin Victims aren’t the addicts To the editor: Re: ‘Durham sees spike in heroin use after OxyContin pulled off the market’, news, durhamregion.com, April 8, 2012. After reading the comments from Beth Whalen in the article I’m shaking my head. If there is any finger-pointing to be done perhaps look no further than drug companies who developed and misled doctors into believing that oxycontin and percodan were miraculous, non-addic- tive, painkilling drugs. They should be hauled into court and made financially responsible to assist drug rehabilitation instead of putting the onus on taxpayers. My heart does not bleed for the junkie. In fact, I wish more public outcry was aimed at the real victims, hard-working professional pharmacy staff who have been held up by criminal junkies in pur- suit of their pills, and policemen and women who put their lives on the line daily trying to thwart the criminals only to have cases dropped in courts. A Toronto woman was recently turned down for cancer-fighting meds yet the bleeding hearts want to make it easier for junkies to continue an illegal lifestyle by providing safe injection sites. I’m still just shaking my head. Tony Sloggett Oshawa inCinerator Going against nature To the editor: A lot of talk continues on the incinerator. Something not discussed before is the philosophy, knowledge and thought of Indigenous knowledge. An indigenous per looks at nature and reciprocates with nature. In other words, nature will help us if we help it. So, one must see our implica- tions in environmental practices. We have a responsibility with our relationship to nature. The indigenous community looks to sustain life. When they hunt, they hunt in preservation. Every living thing is part of the web of life, and there needs to be a relationship between people and the envi- ronment. The bottom line is we are not just harming ourselves but also the environ- ment if this incinerator goes through. All content copyright We think... email responses to newsroom@durhamregion.com Editorial Opinions Durham residents must be prepared for the unexpected If the worst happens, will you be ready? Durham Region officials are preparing to mark National Emergency Prepared- ness Week next month and are urging res- idents from Pickering to Clarington and up to Scugog and Uxbridge to take a few simple steps should disaster strike. If a train derails -- as has happened more than once in Durham Region in recent years -- it could require evacua- tion. If a severe storm brings a tornado to your neighourhood, you could be forced to stay indoors for an extended period of time without power as occurred with the massive blackout that struck Canada and the U.S. in 2003. In either disaster scenario, whether man-made or natural, Durham Region’s emergency management office is working to raise awareness and to encourage Dur- ham residents to take a few simple steps and be ready. And, as Ivan Ciuciura, Durham’s direc- tor of emergency management notes, preparation is relatively easy. Have an emergency plan in place at home, pack some non-perishable food items, store two litres of water per person, per day, a first aid kit, clothing, a battery-operat- ed radio, toiletries, some cash, copies of important documents and a flashlight, among other items. While it’s true that Durham Region has been fortunate to be spared large-scale disasters, it makes eminent sense to ensure that you and your loved ones are ready for any eventuality. The Durham Emergency Management Office takes the lead in the event of a region-wide event and has protocols in place to help co-ordinate a response to disaster. It only makes sense that local residents also prepare, should official assistance be immediately unavailable. Residents are encouraged to take the time to avail themselves of the timely and helpful tips offered by DEMO (visit the website at www.durham.ca/demo for a checklist and ‘Are You Ready’ pamphlet), discuss the issue with family members, and prepare an emergency kit with neces- sary items. The difference between adequately cop- ing with a disaster and being an unin- tended victim of one could well be found in the elements of preparation. If you don’t have one already, get your emergency preparedness kit started today and add to it as your budget allows. In the best-case scenario, you’ll never have to use it. But, as the saying goes, we must hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 2 7 , 2 0 1 2 7 AP SUZANNE* & LINDSAY* BIGIONI 905.619.9500 OPEN HOUSE THIS SATURDAY & SUNDAY FROM 2-4PM 49 WESTACOTT CRES., AJAX 1600 CHARLES STREET, UNIT 812 Luxury Living At Its Best! A special event was held to recognize volun- teers who help run free breakfast and snack programs in public and Catholic schools across Durham. PI C K E R I N G PI C K E R I N G AD V E R T I S I N G F E A T U R E Spring is in the air and after a long winter you’ve opened your windows to find that they are old, ugly or just in rough shape. There are several benefits to having new windows and doors in your home. First, they improve the overall look of your house and increase its value. New windows and doors are also much more energy efficient, which means you can keep your heating and air conditioning inside, reducing your monthly bills. It may be tempting to pick up some windows and install them yourself, but you may find that you’re not getting the highest quality windows and the installation is trickier than it seems. Even if you buy the best windows on the market, if they are not installed and sealed properly, they essentially become worthless. “If a window or door is not installed properly, you can get drafts coming into the house,” explains Wayne Hutchinson, owner of Durham Windows and Doors. “I often get calls from people who have tried to install windows themselves or have used a friend or family member to come out and fix the installation.” Homeowners can save themselves the cost and trouble by having their windows and doors done properly the first time. Specializing only in windows and doors, Wayne and his staff have earned a reputation for their great work. Wayne will come to your house to measure and will bring with him samples of the windows that he has available. Not only can you shop from the comfort of your own home, but you can also see exactly how the windows will look. “After being in this business for 34 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Homeowners may also be tempted to hire a company that is willing to work under the table. The problem is that while they may save money short- term, it could cost them everything in the long run. If a worker is not insured and gets injured in your home, you are liable. Fly by night companies also won’t be around to honour warranties or help with any issues that come up. All of the installers at Durham Windows and Doors are staff, not subcontractors, are fully insured and have their WSIB certificates. Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King Street West in Oshawa. For more information, please call Wayne at (905) 579- 2222 or 1-888-576-8575 or visit the website at www.durhamwindowsanddoors.ca. With spring’s milder weather emerging, fishing season is one of the first signs that winter has been officially left behind. It isn’t uncommon to see roadside anglers from across Durham testing their luck and skill against the local water wildlife in our many rivers and lakes. We are lucky as Durham residents to have such a wide range of fishing experiences available to us. You can experience a full-day fishing excursion with your friends or family, and still make it back home in time for din- ner. You can fish on rivers and streams, in a variety of vast lakes, in conservation areas, on land or in open waters. Whatever your fishing fancy, and as long as you have a valid Ontar- io fishing licence, Durham is sure to have you hooked. Lake Scugog is a world-class fishing des- tination used for professional sport fishing tournaments as well as for fishing television showcases. During its spring season -- which begins the Friday before the second Saturday in May -- the lake has a bountiful amount of walleye, jumbo perch and crappie fish funnelling at the mouth of Scugog River. Large-mouth bass are also abundant in the summer months and can be found in most weedy areas closer to the shoreline. The shoreline of Lake Ontar- io and all of its streams are ideal for rainbow trout fishing year-round. Beaverton Harbour, on Lake Simcoe, is famous for its warm-water jumbo perch, cold- water lake trout, burbot, pike and whitefish. Lake Simcoe provides year-round fishing, but is especially fruitful early in the morning dur- ing the spring. If you’re looking for a family oriented fish- ing trip, look no further than one of Durham’s conservation areas, which all offer protected river fishing. From the Bowmanville Valley to Heber Down in Whitby, these sites are fully equipped with picnic and washroom facili- ties, making them all family friendly destina- tions. It should be noted that Ontario Fishing Regulations only allow for specific fish to be caught during specific seasons and in certain areas, but spring is the most abundant time. For a full list of all fish and their respective seasons, including year-round fishing, visit the Ministry of Natural Resources website at www.mnr.gov.on.ca. For more ideas on planning your perfect day of fishing, check out Durham Tourism’s fishing guide at www.durhamtourism.ca, or drop us a fishing line on Twitter at @Dur- hamTourism. Prior to written history, stories were passed on orally from generation to generation. For good reasons, we are rediscovering this oral tradition and, in this age of movies, television, the printed word, and continually changing technology, storytellers stand ready to uphold this tradition. Eager to relate happenings from the past and present, real or imaginary, to breathe life into the old tales and take listeners on mind journeys into the wonderment of their imaginations where true literacy begins. Today’s storytellers are more than just entertainers. They are people who are attracted to stories, like mice to cheese, sharing their stories in a manner that will keep you spellbound. Stories, whether drawn from tradition or personal accounts, are for everyone, young and old. Storytelling is a potentially powerful tool, which breaks down barriers and contributes to better understanding among people. She will be showing a num- ber of new pen-and-ink works, some with watercolour added, including the piece that won the spot on the ACA show’s program cover. It’s a place she knows well and has drawn many times, “a little backwater” just west of Rotary Park, barely in Pickering. “It has changed so many times that it’s one of my favourite areas to paint,” she says. “It’s amazing how it changes, the whole of the lakeshore.” The waterfront is a place she frequents often, three or four times a week, and Auguste says “I’ve always got a pen-and-ink on the go.” She carries a mobile art kit with her at all times and generally draws landscapes. Auguste has been drawing since she was a three-year-old in England. She wanted to be a fashion designer and start- ed courses in London during the Second World War. But they were interrupted when the Ger- mans began firing V2 rockets. “Whenever they ran out of petroleum or gas, whatever it was that propelled them, they just dropped wherever they were and they were aimed at London,” she says. “It was so dangerous that the school closed down.... So they said, ‘just go to your local art school, where you live’.” But her local art school had no fashion program and, after becoming bored with painting flowers and the like, Auguste gave it up. She lived in Denmark, attending Copenhagen Univer- sity. When she returned to Eng- land she wanted to go into med- icine, but it was just after the war and many of the returning servicemen had the same idea. Auguste was told to take nursing and she did, only retiring from it two years ago at age 79. Throughout her long nursing career, she says she was always interested in and making art. The circuit’s final offering is Salmon Fishing In The Yemen at 7 p.m. at the Ajax Cineplex Odeon. “A rich sheikh who has enjoyed salmon fishing in Scotland believes that fishing creates a spiritual connection between humans and nature and bring- ing the sport to his country would benefit his people,” states a press release. “The fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) thinks the idea is frivolous and unfea- sible but as he is drawn closer to Harriet, the sheikh’s repre- sentative, the mission begins to succeed; it is helped by support from the government which is desperate to detract attention from a political scandal and sees this idea as the perfect opportu- nity to promote what will appear to be a heartfelt story of British goodwill in the Middle East.” The Ajax Cineplex Odeon is at 248 Kingston Rd. Pam Auguste, on joining Ajax Creative Arts Pickering’s G Five performing at event Mike Ruta mruta@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- Oshawa hip hop artist Micky RedEyez Fernando is throwing a party May 11 and everybody’s invited. And he’s welcoming other local musi- cians, including Pickering’s G Five, to the event that marks the release of his CD, The Micky Red Eyez Experiment. Born in Nigeria, Fernando’s fami- ly came to Canada when he was a child and he was raised in Oshawa. He recently returned here after two years of college in London, Ont. Fernando says his influences are the classic rap artists of the early ’90s New York scene such as Nas, Jay-Z and Big Daddy Kane. “Since 2000 and forward, I think the music has become more commercial- ized; it’s more about selling the record,” he says. “They call the ’90s the golden era of hip hop. It just has more of a mes- sage and some of the best music came out in the ’90s in New York. My music is a reflection of the golden era of hip hop. I wanted to make music that had a mes- sage and that people could relate to.” Fernando says his lyrics generally come from personal experiences. He doesn’t talk about degrading women or having a million dollars and living the high life. “I would not say that it’s street or gang- ster,” he says. “It could be described as backpack and new school.” One track on the new disc is called Backpack and the accompanying video, shot in London while he was at school, is a hoot. Fernando in the video pulls objects out of his backpack that have no place in there, including a hockey stick. When he sees a pretty girl, he produc- es flowers. And when a young girl loses the ice cream from her cone, Fernando replaces it. He says The Micky Red Eyez Experiment, recorded in Oshawa, involved many artists from Durham. The bulk of the instru- mentals on the disc were created by Stay Kool Productions, an Oshawa duo. G Five and Ajax hip hop musician Peter Jack- son are featured on the track Top of the World , and Fernan- do credits Jackson for giving local artists a lot of opportunities to open for big acts. Some of the guests on the disc aren’t hip hoppers, such as Wade Woodward from progressive rock band The Colts. “I’ve always wanted to have collabora- tions with different artists... because at the end of the day it’s all music,” he says. Fernando has been making music for seven years. He’s played a number of talent competitions, recently winning one at Oshawa’s Status Lounge, and he’s shared the stage with big names such as Wu-Tang Clan. The CD release party is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Reine Lounge (formerly The Groove Lounge), 200 John St. W., Oshawa, and like the disc features performanc- es by other local artists. The disc will be sold at the show and it is also available on iTunes. MARIE -- Kris Barclay has one more stop to make before his junior hockey career comes to an end. It just so happens his last dance will be on the biggest possible stage after his Soo Thunderbirds qualified for the Royal Bank Cup national championship, winning the Dudley Hewitt Cup last week in Thunder Bay. The Soo, representing the Northern Ontario Junior Hock- ey League, upset the Ontario Junior Hockey League champion Stouffville Spirit 5-3 in the cham- pionship game. “It was a great feeling from start to finish seeing the guys come together,” says Barclay, a defence- man from Ajax who was traded by the Pickering Panthers to the Soo at the January trade deadline. “It was a huge character win. To be part of something like that was really special.” In addition to the Northern and Ontario champions, the Dudley Hewitt tournament also included the Superior International Hock- ey League champion Wisconsin Wilderness and the host Thunder Bay North Stars. The Soo opened with a 4-3 over- time win over Wisconsin, and fol- lowed by a 4-3 win over Thun- der Bay in which Barclay picked up an assist. That win guaran- teed them a spot in at least the semifinals, with a chance to fin- ish first overall and receive a bye into the finals with a win in the final-round robin game against Stouffville. That didn’t happen, as Stouffville put a 10-2 beating on the Soo. “We just completely did not play well enough to win,” says Barclay. “From the drop of the puck they were all over us and scored a cou- ple quick goals and we weren’t prepared to win that game.” It forced the Soo into a semifinal game with the host Thunder Bay, winning 8-5, setting up a rematch with Stouffville in the final. The championship game was the fifth game in as many days for the Soo, but Barclay says there is no fatigue factor when you reach that point. “The adrenalin takes over and you don’t think about if your legs are a little bit sore, or if your back is sore,” he says. “It just doesn’t really matter because at that point the game is so big, if you’re not ready to go, then you shouldn’t come to the rink.” The Soo made the most of their limited opportunities in the final, outshot 47-16 but winning 5-3, including an empty-net goal in the final seconds. Barclay says his team leaves midweek for Humboldt, Sas- katchewan for the RBC Cup from May 5-13. In online forums, the Soo aren’t given much of a chance to win, but none of that matters to Barclay. “I think we can surprise a lot of people,” he predicts. “Everyone will say what they are going to say. I believe in every one of the guys in the dressing room, our coach- ing staff and everyone involved in our organization.” curling column Only bragging rights remain from curling season Curling is finished for this sea- son, but here are some final results that allow bragging rights for the summer. On Friday, April 13 the annu- al closing banquet was held for the Thursday and Friday Mixed Leagues with a sit-down dinner and dance. After the final game on April 15 the ice was turned over to the skaters and the com- pressor was turned off and the area can now store golf carts. For the Friday Night Mixed League, the trophy winners in Division A were the Bert Durand team which included Joan O’Leary, Ron Hadlington and Dianne Rose. Division B was the Will MacFadyen foursome, in C the Rhonda Welch team won, and in D, Stan Yee took the honours. The Thursday League playoffs saw Brian Moffatt with Carol Wil- son, David Walmsley and Dianne Rose take A. In B, John Thain and his team won, and C was captured by the Meaghan Snow foursome. Monday Night Ladies saw Les- lie Pyne and her team win the top honours with Team Martin plac- ing second. Bernice Collins from Goldline/Toronto District Curl- ing Association attended the year end banquet on Monday, April 16 and presented a championship banner to Sandra Thain, Bon- nie Klepadlo, Joan O’Leary and Dianne Rose. The team had won the 2011 Toronto and District ladies’ championship in Novem- ber. An Olympic event will be held near to us and tickets are expect- ed to go on sale in the fall of 2012. Kitchener will host the 2013 Cap- ital One curling pre-trials Nov. 5-10, 2013 at the Memorial Audi- torium. This event qualifies teams for the 2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings (Canadian curling tri- als) which will be held Dec. 1-8, 2013 in Winnipeg. Twelve men’s and 12 women’s teams will com- pete in a triple knockout format leading to a modified page play- off system. The Kitchener event is to determine two of each gender to join the six already qualified teams for the trials. The trials will determine Canada’s representa- tives for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Add May 6 to your calendar for a garage/yard sale at the club.
