The students of St. Wilfrid Catholic School were saying goodbye to one of their own, Allesio Cac- cavella, who died in August after a long battle with brain stem cancer. Family, friends and fellow stu- dents gathered at the school on April 18, which would have been his 12th birthday, for a memorial event in his honour. “We miss Allesio on earth but we know he’s in heaven,” said Emanuela Molica-Lazzaro, a friend of the Caccavella family who helped organize the event. “This is an ending to the story. Allesio will always live on in our hearts, but this is our way to say good- bye.” PICKERING -- Allesio Caccavella died of cancer more than a year ago. Trent McNicol, 42, was released on $5,000 bail after a hearing in Oshawa Saturday, according to court records. He’s to appear in court again at the end of April. Mr. McNicol was arrested last week on charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation, the result of an investigation launched in late March after a com- plainant approached Durham police. Mr. McNicol has been a coach with the Whitby Dolphins Swim Club since 2006, working with young athletes, according to a resume posted on the club’s website. He has coached in other areas of the GTA, including Ajax. Investigators have issued an appeal for information as the investigation continues. “Often victims aren’t quick to report,” said Durham police Sergeant Nancy van Rooy. “We want to ensure there aren’t any other victims.” Police have released few details of the allegations, except to say they involve inappropriate touching that reportedly occurred between 2005 and 2007. Court records indicate the complainant is female. Police said the allegations relate to Mr. McNicol’s work as a swim coach. “The (complainant) is a swim- mer,” Sgt. van Rooy said. A publication ban prohibits reporting on evidence presented at the bail hearing or the identity of the com- plainant. Mr. McNicol’s online resume describes him as an accomplished coach who began his career as a swim- mer in Brantford, where he became a top-ranked national athlete. In the fall of 1989 he was awarded a scholarship to the University of Maryland, where he studied kinesiology. His accomplishments include being named 2001 Ontario Coach of the Year and mentoring swimmers who have captured numerous provincial, national and international medals, the resume says. A request for comment from the Whitby Dolphins club was not responded to Thursday. CTV reported Thursday Mr. McNicol has been relieved of his duties with the club, which said in a statement it is co-operat- ing with police. Matt Bell, an Ajax-based swim coach who has worked in the past with Mr. McNicol, said it’s upsetting anytime allegations involving young athletes and the people entrusted to coach them arise. Swim coaches in Can- ada belong to organizations that require criminal back- ground checks and training on appropriate conduct, he said. He’s hopeful the allegations won’t prevent parents from allowing kids to pursue their athletic goals. “Everyone is out to protect their family,” he said. “Trust is a huge thing.” Mr. Bell described Mr. McNicol as a coach who turned in “rea- sonably strong” results. He cautioned against a rush to judgment in the case. “This is all just allegations right now,” he said. Court records indicate Mr. McNicol has been ordered to live with his surety in Brantford, and is prohibited from communicat- ing with two people, including the complainant. He’s not allowed to possess weapons or be in any parks, community centres or other public places where kids might congregate. He’s prohibited from working with or communicating with anyone under 16. Mr. McNicol is due back in court in Oshawa April 30. 24/7 LocaL breaking news, sports, photos, video and weather: aLL da Y, everY daY when YoU want it. >> du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 2 0 , 2 0 1 2 3 P On Wednesday, March 28, 2012 Ajax Mazda held a special banquet to introduce The All New 2013 SKYACTIV Mazda CX-5. At a council meeting on April 16, coun- cillors voted to ratify several friendships agreements signed during a recent visit to China by Mayor David Ryan. During the trip he met with politicians and business leaders in Taicang City, Yuhang District, Xianning and Chanping District of Beijing City and visited proj- ects such as University City, a $30-mil- lion Planning Exhibition Hall and Tai- cang’s Agricultural Park. “I had the opportunity to meet with and speak to a large number of businessmen and companies,” Mayor Ryan said. “In these interactions, I always spoke about partnership opportunities with Pickering and Durham Region. In par- ticular I spoke about opportunities in investing in our downtown core and I can tell you now we have some very genuine interest and look forward to ongoing dis- cussions.” While in China Mayor Ryan signed three friendship agreements on behalf of the City, with Taicang City, Yuhang Dis- trict and Xianning. “These agreements are important first steps towards building friendship and economic ties,” Mayor Ryan explained. “No financial commitments were made. The only thing I had committed to was to further our co-operation and mutual understanding.” In a report to council staff described the friendship agreements as “the beginning of a co-operative relationship in which ideas for future projects may be formulated for the mutual benefit of both parties,” and noted the agreements are an expectation in the process of establishing partnerships in many for- eign countries. The playground was closed on April 9 after a resident alerted police to a suspicious vial of liq- uid within the play area. The liquid turned out to be mercury and was also found on the slide. The next day a walkway near Holy Redeemer Catho- lic School on Liverpool Road was briefly closed after a small pool of mercury was found on a post. “We are very thankful that no one was injured from this senseless and irresponsible act,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “If there is one silver lining from this unfortunate situation, it is how the community banded together and demonstrated Pickering’s renowned civic pride.” While Kinsmen Park is now essentially mercury- free, the City is consulting the Ministry of the Envi- ronment and working with Green For Life, a hazard- ous materials consultant, to ensure the park is com- pletely contaminant-free before reopening it to the public. On April 17, GFL dismantled the slides and trans- ported the equipment to its facility for decontami- nation. All of the play area’s wood chips will also be removed and disposed of as hazardous waste. Once GFL confirms that all pieces of the playground are contaminant-free, the City will reinstall the play- ground equipment and replace the wood chips. OPG and the Kinsmen Club will be assisting with decon- tamination and wood chip replacement costs. Renovations are scheduled in Uxbridge, Port Perry, Ajax and Pickering. Three of the schools are receiving upgrades to prepare for all-day kindergarten starting in Septem- ber. “We know children who take part in full-day kindergarten receive a solid foun- dation for future education,” said DDSB chairman and Uxbridge and Brock trustee Joe Allin. “This construction will help pro- vide the needed infrastructure to support early learning.” Goodwood Public School in Uxbridge received $1,375,000 for an addition includ- ing two new classrooms and a renovation for change rooms. Southwood Park Public School in Ajax is adding four new classrooms and an eleva- tor at a cost of $2,950,000. Frenchman’s Bay Public School in Pickering is getting ready for its increase in kindergarten students by add- ing a new gym and renovating the library and classrooms for $5,625,500. Port Perry High School isn’t getting all-day kindergarten but the secondary school was given $4,450,000. It’s adding more than 8,000 square feet of classroom space and an eleva- tor. educatioN durham schools upgraded for kindergarten program Viewpoint Pocket remotes might open vehicle doors To the editor: Recently, I’ve noticed a number of reports and letters regarding unauthor- ized vehicle entries, resulting in the theft of personal possessions. I’m very confi- dent the majority of these thefts are the result of unlocked vehicles. Another letter writer complained of vehicle remote con- trols creating noise pollution when the horn honks as the vehicle is locked. Just an FYI to everyone, do not keep your car keys and remote in your pants pocket. After my wife purchased her car in 2008, I kept find- ing her car unlocked. She insisted that she locked it when she left the vehicle. One day when I was working in the garage, I heard her car unlock by itself. Sure enough, when I checked a door, it opened.I went inside to retrieve her car keys to see if the remote control was mal- functioning, and they weren’t there. The keys were in my wife’s pants pocket. It was at this time we learned that car- rying the remote in your pants pocket can cause the unlock button to be depressed. In the meantime, lock your car and don’t keep your valuables inside, especially wal- lets, purses, cameras, computers, cell- phones, etc. Gord Tewnion Ajax Law enforcement Those being attacked tend to fight back To the editor: Re: ‘Oshawa man charged after police dog assaulted’, news, durhamregion.com March 28, 2012. So a man was chased by an officer and his dog partner into a neighbour’s yard, where Magnum attacked the man, biting his arm, so that he needed to be treated at a hospital. During the attack the man punched and kicked back, allegedly injuring the dog, but not enough that he needed care. The man was charged with cruelty to animals. I have two issues with this: first, we expect restraint from causing injury from our officers. How is an unarmed suspect fleeing from police a reasonable cause for being attacked by a German shep- herd? Magnum and his handler injured an unarmed man and then laid charges against him, adding insult to injury. Second, try getting bitten by a German shepherd on the arm and try not to punch or kick in return as you experience the pain of having teeth penetrate skin and muscle. Who could possibly think it reasonable to get attacked by a dog and just lie there and take it? This guy is going to get his day in court. I hope the judge is reasonable enough to understand the implications of being attacked by a full-grown German shep- herd. Michael Robbescheuten Oshawa feedback Punishment lax for animal cruelty To the editor: Re: ‘Oshawa couple pleads guilty to ani- mal cruelty charges’, news, durhamregion. com, April 3, 2012. I read the story of the horrific suffer- ing of Mistake the German shepherd that had to be put down. After the waterworks stopped, I got angry. I am tired of these disgusting examples of human beings getting away with such cru- elty. The punishment they received, being no longer allowed to own animals, is pathet- ic. Wow, a slap on the wrist and that’s all? Come on people, this dog suffered. It takes a certain type of person to be so cruel. Three years ago our tiny, sweet six-pound cat was struck in the head with a shovel or hammer by one of our neighbours for get- ting too close to their bird feeders. Why do we allow the laws to be so lax? Where is a hefty fine (the money should be used to help other abused animals and educate)? Where is jail time? I’d like to see those two people locked in a shed with no food or water and living in their own filth for a week. I’d like to help change the laws and I hope other people will join me. All content copyright we think... email responses to newsroom@durhamregion.com Editorial Opinions Durham hospitals measure up, but there’s always room to improve Hospitals across Durham Region appear to be serving patients well in a wide range of medical services. Both Lakeridge Health, which includes hospitals in Bowmanville, Oshawa, Whitby and Port Perry, along with Rouge Valley Health System, with hospitals in Ajax and Scarborough, scored within the national average when compared to facilities across the country, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Lakeridge Health was within range on five of seven performance indicators; Rouge Valley scored above the national average in three categories. But each health system in Durham also has work to do in some areas. Lakeridge Health, for example, fell below the nation- al average for 28-day readmission rates for heart attack patients. In Rouge Valley’s case, it was below the national average in 28-day readmissions after strokes, and 30-day mortality after heart attacks. Though Dr. Naresh Mohan, chief of staff at Rouge Valley, notes that some of the CIHI conclusions were reached without taking into consideration a number of vari- ables, the statistics do provide an oppor- tunity for ongoing review and attempts to make positive change. The report, particularly in ranking hos- pitals below the national average in some areas of medical care, is not a condem- nation of the quality of service. Rather, it makes plain for local health care adminis- trators, executives and front-line person- nel areas in which they can focus on review and improvement efforts. On the whole, residents in Durham Region receive excellent medical atten- tion for cardiac care, maternal labour and delivery, stroke, hip replacements and knee replacements, all of which were mea- sured in the CIHI study. Though both hos- pital systems scored below the national average in some areas, it is also true that each scored above, sometimes well above, the average in other areas. And to their credit, hospital system offi- cials here at home uniformly maintain that their staff and facilities are committed to ongoing improvements. In that context, the CIHI study identifies some areas in which they can focus their collective efforts. The CIHI report and medical outcome comparisons help paint a picture of hos- pital care in facilities across the nation, which can be used in Durham to see how things measure up in our local commu- nities. There are no alarms being sound- ed, no suggestions of crisis, and no calls for immediate action. But it does serve its purpose, and local health care officials acknowledge that. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 2 0 , 2 0 1 2 7 AP du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 2 0 , 2 0 1 2 8 P OVER 50 LOCAL ARTISTS FREE ADMISSION FREE DRAW FOR AN ORIGINAL PA INTING OVER 50 LOCAL ARTISTS FREE ADMISSION FREE DRAW FOR AN ORIGINAL PA INTING Fri. The school’s trophy case was deco- rated with photos of Allesio and some of his favourite things, including Pokemon cards, ketchup chips, Tim Hortons iced capps and a soccer ball. “It’s something I never would have expected, I feel truly honoured,” said Andreo Caccavella, Allesio’s father, of the event. “His memory will never be forgot- ten.” As the event came to a close, family and friends gathered in the school foyer under a banner featuring Allesio’s photo and the motto “made to move mountains.” Even- tually, they bid each other goodbye using Allesio’s favourite phrase, “peace out, suckers.” PICKERING from page 1 community Pickering school honours classmate with balloon tribute jason liebregts / metroland getting ready for the season PICKERING -- John Redman was busy getting his boat ready for the sailing season, April 18, at the Frenchman’s Bay Marina. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ap r i l 2 0 , 2 0 1 2 10 AP HELP YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY. Make your dreams a reality with the help of Arnts Topsoil: The Landscape Supplier. Begin by visiting one of Arnts' two loca- tions with acres of outdoor space with every- thing for your landscaping needs. Through extensive displays, design brochures, instal- lation videos and knowledgeable staff, Arnts Topsoil provides the tools to help you create an outdoor space that surpasses your expec- tations. There are 10 basic steps to the installa- tion of interlocking paving stones. The first step is to draw a diagram showing measure- ments, grade elevations and proposed plant- ers, steps, walls and paving stone areas. A member of the Arnts sales staff will help you calculate the amount and cost of the materi- als for your project. The next step is to pre- pare the area by marking the digging loca- tion. Excavate the required depth depending on the application. Fill the area with a well- draining base material, usually a combina- tion of gravel and sand. Compact the gravel with a place compactor in 2” deep intervals. Spread a one-inch layer of coarse sand on the compacted base and level. Lay the pav- ing stones on the coarse sand, staggering the joints for stability. Mark and cut any pavers that do not fit along the edges and around objects. Install brick edge restraints along the perimeter of the paving stones to prevent the pavers from shifting. Sweep the surface of the paving stones and compact with a gas plate compactor to settle the pavers into the layer of coarse sand. Finish the project by sweeping fine sand into the joints of the pav- ers. In addition to a wide variety of paving stones and retaining walls, Arnts Topsoil also carries the best selection of soils, mulches, aggregates, natural flagstone and rockery, decorative gravels, slabs, curbs, steps, land- scape lighting and much more. OK, not really. But pulling into the Westney Road farmhouse where he lives and works, built by his great-great-great grandfa- ther in the mid-19th century, one is struck by how it’s an island of the past surrounded by the pres- ent. However, if island makes you think ‘isolated’, the Ajax metal sculptor is anything but. He hosts music events on his property and generally keeps company with other artists and creative people. Lishman believes artistic cre- ation and participation “go hand in hand. “Creativity is something I think we need to share,” Lishman says. “It heals; it does wonderful things if you let it.” He’s sharing his creativity at a stop on the Durham West Arts Centre Spring Studio Tour, April 28 and 29 in Ajax, Pickering and south Uxbridge. And Lishman expects a good turnout. His place is a good tour draw, and Lishman says some- times visitors are so interested in the pieces he has set up outside, they miss the small art gallery inside the house. Lishman had his first major solo show in a public gallery at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa last year and is at work on a commission for the Town of Ajax. He describes the latter as a description of Ajax, past and present and who knows what the future will bring. The metal base is a rock representing the Town’s beginnings, and he’s building a stainless steel tree that will grow out of it featuring a number of faces, representing the far more diverse Ajax of the 21st century. Lishman explains why metal is his medium of choice. “It’s durable; it’s completely 100 per cent recyclable; it’s easy to find at scrap dealers,” he says. “Unless something demolish- es it, it’s built to stay in the same form for 10,000 to 20,000 years. I think everything should be beau- tiful and sustainable.” Many of the ideas for his piec- es come from dreams, like the winged horse with a sphinx head that was in the McLaughlin show, “a dream I kept having where I’m flying a mechanical sphinx. “The point is, follow your dreams, even if they seem ridicu- lous,” Lishman says. He’s hoping in the future to do larger sculptures for towns and cities. Lishman is having a show at Sinful Inflictions, a Whitby tat- too studio, at the end of the sum- mer and is planning another Woodlawn Art Festival in early July. It’s a free event with musi- cians playing and artists and craftspeople showing their work. Lishman on the DWAC tour will be showing some of his larger pieces and offering some newer, smaller works for sale. You can find him at 709 West- ney Rd. N. Visit his website, www.geor- dielishman.com. The self-guided tour runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. See who else is taking part and download a map of where they’ll be at www.dwac.ca. The Pickering Community Concert Band performs on April 22 at 2 p.m. at the St. Francis Centre, 78 Church St. S., Ajax. The band won first place honours at the Pickering Rotary Music Festival in March, and first place at the Oshawa Kiwanis Music Festival last year. The April concert will feature the two musical selections that won them top hon- ours at the Pickering festival. One piece is a march by a Danish composer while the other is an overture by a young Japanese composer. They’ll be playing music from the British Isles and will be joined by the William Dunbar Concert Band for an after- noon of live music. “Most people are not exposed to live music any more,” says Pickering Commu- nity Concert Band saxophonist Dennis Gazarek. “One of the things about a live band is it’s direct between the performer and the audience and there’s no filtering, modulation or alteration electronically to what the audience hears. It’s pure music.” Tickets for the show are $15 or $10 for seniors and students. They can be pur- chased from band members or by calling 905-427-5443. The Pickering band has been playing in the Ajax-Pickering area for more than 20 years. It’s made up of 50 local musicians but they welcome new members all the time. The ‘it’ in this case would be his tenure as the GM/head coach of the Ajax Rock, as the Major Series Lacrosse club held its first offi- cial function on the weekend with an open camp for rookies and free agents at the Ajax Community Centre. The open tryout attracted 20 runners and four goalies, which provided a point of entry for the season. “We didn’t really know what to expect because it was an open camp,” said D’Orazio by phone earlier this week, beginning his first year at the helm of the Rock. “Our rookies showed up, the ones that aren’t in university, that was our main goal. “From the open ones, we’re looking for the diamonds in the rough.” D’Orazio said that overall, he was happy with the turnout and impressed with the speed of the players as they worked through some drills. Releases weren’t made, as he is going to put the hopefuls through a couple of more workouts this weekend before paring the number down, hoping to take 30-40 at the most to the main training camp. “We’re still looking for goal scorers and a lit- tle bit of grittiness, but I think that will come when we get most of the team together.” The difficulty for the Rock at this time of year is trying to get everyone together, as many of the younger players are still away at NCAA or CIS schools, wrapping up exams before returning home. As a coaching staff, D’Orazio said they are busy putting names to positions, making sure they are ready when everybody returns home. “We’re just doing our depth charts as coach- es, putting together our roster that way, trying to put together the best team to hit the floor this season,” he said. PI C K E R I N G AD V E R T I S I N G F E A T U R E Get Rid of Unwanted Guests with Leap Pest Control Spring is in the air, and that means that wildlife is out looking for food and shelter. A great source of both is your home or office. Unwanted guests, including raccoons, skunks, squirrels, opossums, mice, birds and bats can damage your home and can carry diseases, which can make them more than a nuisance to you and your family. Even if you don’t see them, there are other signs that you have a small visitor in your home, including hearing scratching in the walls or from the ceiling, droppings in your home, or sounds of gnawing or chattering. Outside, you may notice damage to your soffits and/or roof where the animals may be gaining entry. There are a variety of ways that wildlife can get into your home, from a bird flying in through an open door or window to a raccoon sneaking in through the missing shingles in your roof. Trying to remove wildlife from your home or office yourself can be stressful and frustrating, often without the results you want. That’s why if you think you have an unwanted guest, it’s time to call Leap Pest Control. The experts at Leap Pest Control will come to your home and eradicate your wildlife problem. First, they will inspect your vents and exhaust covers, chimney caps, soffits, around and underneath your decks and porches, garages, sheds, loose shingles on your roof and eaves troughs to see how the wildlife is getting in and out of your home. It will also provide them with the best plan to catch the animal. One way doors that will allow the animals to leave but not return and/ or traps will be strategically set and the clients can check them on a regular basis. Once the animal has been removed, Leap Pest Control will come back and inspect the attic to ensure there are no babies left behind and seal off entry points. Live snaring can also be done to remove any wildlife that may have gotten into your home or office. Once it has been caught, it will be removed from the premises and released back into the wild. If the animal succumbs to sickness, injury or old age before it can be trapped and removed, Leap Pest Control can come in and remove the wildlife and clean up the area. They can also clean and remove fecal matter from your attic, roof and around your home. If you want to remove your unwanted guests safely, humanely and quickly, it’s time to contact Leap Pest Control. Competitive curling comes to a close The Annandale Men’s Competitive League com- pleted the year-end play- downs which ran March 27 to April 10. The club champions were the Chris Van Huyse team made up with Pat- rick Janssen, Tyler Ander- son and Matt Van Huyse. They won over Gord Nor- ton and his foursome. The final game was tight until Van Huyse sprung a four count in the fourth end. Carl Vickers won B over Terry Jones, David Gau- dette took C over Sandy McMillan, in D it was Glenn Hill over Andrew McLean, in E Mike Atkin over David Williams, and F had Jason Young beating John Donahue. The last bonspiel of the year, the Annandale Men’s Last Chance, ran April 14-15, but conflicted with other club closings which hurt entries. Regardless, Annandale teams nearly swept the winners. Sean Aune defeated Gerry Pinkney to win the Main Event and received $500, while Pinkney received $300. In the second event, Chris Van Huyse defeat- ed Jon Payne. In the third event, Ben Bevan defeated David Lloyd. In the fourth event, Dave Fischer from the Oshawa Golf and Curl- ing Club defeated Dale Patterson. After the final Sunday game the ice was turned over to the skaters and the compressor was turned off for the summer. Some Annandale mem- bers entered into the Tim- bits provincial elementary school 25th anniversary curling championships held in Parry Sound. The school team from Gan- datsetiagon Public School competed in its fifth year. Of the 80 teams from across the province, it was the only team from the Great- er Toronto Area. With- in the pool of five teams, Gandatsetiagon went three wins and one loss. It was not enough to move on to the finals, however it was the team’s best show- ing so far in this event. The team members are Daniel Cousins, Scott McMulkin, Christopher Retz and Greg and Sean Chapman sharing the lead position. They were coached by Rob McMulkin.
