PICKERING -- New mom Christine Granger is
richer in both love and money after giving birth
to baby Ava on Feb. 29 of a leap year.
“I had a feeling she would have been born
today,” said the Pickering resident. The feeling
was so strong that she made a bet with the baby’s
father Dylan Broomer that their child, the first for
both, would arrive on Feb. 29. The pair put down
$20. “I won,” Ms. Granger said, beaming down at
Ava like she just won $1 million.

AJAX -- One Ajax teenager is in hospital
with serious, life-threatening head injuries
and another is facing charges after a “car-
surfing” stunt Wednesday, Feb. 29.
At approximately 8 p.m. a 19-year-old
man was standing on the hood of a grey
Toyota travelling westbound on Maggs
Street. As the vehicle entered the intersec-
tion at Hibbins Avenue, the driver braked,
causing the victim to be thrown from the
hood and strike the pavement, say police.
The victim was taken to Ajax hospital and
then transferred to a trauma hospital in
Toronto.
The roads were closed for several hours
while police investigated. Police say alco-
hol and road and weather conditions did
not play a factor.
Ali Malik, 19, of Bicknell Court, was
charged with dangerous operation of a
motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

DURHAM -- The Humane Society is seek-
ing the public’s help identifying a man who
severely beat a puppy in Ajax.
On Jan. 30 in the park behind the McLean
Community Centre in Ajax, two individuals
heard what seemed like a person scream-
ing and in distress. They ran to see what was
wrong and found a white man in his 20s,
wearing a hooded sweatshirt, violently beat-
ing and punching with his fist a crying Rott-
weiler puppy, near the river bank.
The two individuals screamed at the man
telling him to stop and when he saw the wit-
nesses, he immediately fled the scene.
“They thought the dog was dead because
it was just laying on the ground,” said Ruby
Richards of the Humane Society of Durham
Region.
After five minutes, the eight-month-old
puppy got up and the witnesses contacted the
Humane Society to report the incident.
“We do thank the two individuals that did
stop it, at least yelled, because obviously if
that had not happened, (the dog) could have
been killed,” said animal cruelty investigator
Debby Houghton.
The puppy, now called Geoffrey, was taken
for X-rays and tests and was very sore with
bloodshot eyes and bleeding from the nose.
Geoffrey was put under veterinarian care and
while it seemed to be recovering at first, there
now seems to be swelling in the brain or eye
area.
“He was blind yesterday,” said Ms. Rich-
ards.
On March 1, the dog was taken to the Uni-
versity of Guelph for further tests to see if this
is a result of the trauma experienced during
the beating.
The Humane Society is urging the public
to step forward with any information on the
man responsible for the beatingrot.
“Somebody must know of somebody in the
Ajax area that had a male Rottweiler and now
does not,” said Ms. Richards.
Anyone who may have witnessed the inci-
dent is asked to call the investigations line.
“He’s just a wonderful, gentle dog and he’s
only a puppy,” said Ms. Richards. “He didn’t
deserve to have this happen to him.”
Ms. Houghton said it’s important to find this
person now.
“If this person did this now with this puppy
then if he gets another animal, it would be the
same situation,” she said.
The Humane Society and the Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are offering
a $1,000 reward for information that leads to a
charge and conviction.

Denis O’Connor teen
suspended after
handing out speech
Kristen Calis
kcalis@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Paul Gomille never thought his
speech on inner beauty would result in his
first high school suspension.
The Grade 12 student at Archbishop Denis
O’Connor Catholic High School handed out
his speech entitled “A love letter to all women”
on Valentine’s Day in the school cafeteria.
“Real attractiveness comes from having a
certain dignity,” he wrote. “It comes from hav-
ing class. It comes from being true to yourself,
being yourself, and being comfortable in your
own skin.”
Later that day he was suspended, and his
friends and family want it erased from his
record.
The Durham Catholic District school
board and DO’C principal Donna Modeste
wouldn’t comment on the issue for priva-
cy reasons.
“I wrote it just because I had the inspi-
ration to and I felt it was a message that
had to be said,” Paul told the News
Advertiser.
This speech came a few months after
the board considered banning kilts because
girls were wearing them too short.
When Paul showed his speech to Ms. Mod-
este, “she was pretty thrilled about it,” he
said.
He was pleased to learn he could read it at
an upcoming assembly. But when the two
vice principals got involved, Paul was asked
to revise his speech. While willing to make
small changes, he didn’t want the speech
to lose its meaning altogether and debated
them on this.
Paul said one of the vice principals “called
me outright judgmental.”
“They felt, I think, that this was kind of like
stereotyping some of the
young women who might
take offence,” said Paul’s
father, Wolfgang Gomille,
a former high school
teacher.
Paul wrote in his
speech his mes-
sage was for the
silent, intelli-
gent women
who don’t talk about people behind their
backs or wear revealing clothing, and that the
girls who consider themselves the opposite of
this demographic don’t have to dress or act a
certain way to be attractive.
Paul was told he could no longer read his
speech, but he could shorten it for the year-
book. Instead he photocopied 136 copies
with his own money and he and his friends
passed them out to students at lunch.
By third period, Paul was taken to the prin-
cipal’s office and was told he had offended a
number of people. He was given a two-day
suspension for his persistent opposition to
authority.
While Paul knew there would be repercus-
sion for his actions, he didn’t think he’d be
suspended and didn’t want to hurt anyone.
“He was devastated by the time I picked
him up,” said his dad.
Paul’s friends have started a petition that
had more than 230 signatures at the time
of the interview to remove the suspension
from his record, and a number of them have
Tweeted on the issue.
“My brother has never gotten in trou-
ble before,” said his older sister Alexandra
Gomille, who added she was proud of Paul’s
letter.
Mr. Gomille said he and Paul’s mother plan
to appeal the suspension. He felt the mes-
sage was positive and didn’t believe his son
deserved a suspension.
“My mind is boggled by it,” he said.
Catholic board superintendent Mitch LeP-
age would not speak to the specific case, but
said the committee made up of trustees can
either leave a suspension as is, reduce the
length or quash it altogether.
Ms. Modeste indicated that in cases like
this, principals are in consultation with the
parents.

Ava Broomer was born via C-section just
before 1:30 p.m. at Rouge Valley Health Sys-
tems Ajax and Pickering hospital, weighing in
at seven pounds, 13 ounces. She was the first
baby to arrive on Feb. 29 at the hospital.
“I wasn’t worried about having her on a leap
day,” Ms. Granger said. “I thought it would be
pretty cool.”
Mr. Broomer is likewise complacent with
their daughter’s very special birthday.
“We’ll spoil her every year just the same,”
he said, still looking a little shellshocked just
hours after the delivery. “It didn’t really sink in
until I first saw her, she was so beautiful.”
Ms. Granger was expecting her daughter
to have red hair like her own, but Ava sur-
prised her by arriving with a shock of dark
hair. Luckily, the couple hadn’t bet on that.
Other than guessing when little Ava would
arrive, the parents say they have few expec-
tations for their baby so far.
“I don’t know what she’s going to be, but
I just want her to be really good in school,”
Ms. Granger said.
“I just want her to do the best she can do,”
Mr. Broomer added.
As for her special birthday, the parents say
they’ll celebrate on either Feb. 28 or March
1, but when a leap year does come around
they will make sure it’s extra special.
“That will be an exciting day,” Ms. Granger
said, smiling down at a sleeping Ava.

Leapling Kitty Fenby
hits century mark
at Orchard Villa
MOya DiLLOn
mdillon@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Turning 100 hasn’t dulled
Kitty Fenby’s sense of humour, as the
leapling reminded party-goers at her birth-
day celebrations that she was technically
only 25.
The Pickering resident, who
moved to Orchard Villa Retire-
ment Residence 10 years ago
from her home in Scarborough,
still wields a sharp wit.
“I guess I’m just too slow to
die,” Ms. Fenby says with a smile
when asked what her secret to
longevity is, but did credit “lead-
ing a good clean life” and eat-
ing healthfully with helping her
reach the milestone birthday.
Born prematurely in Man-
chester, England, Ms. Fenby weighed just
30 ounces at delivery. She tells friends of
being brought home, wrapped in blankets
and placed in a drawer by the fire to keep her
warm. She moved to Canada with her fam-
ily at age three, settling in Kitchener for a few
years before moving to Toronto. As an adult
she worked at Toronto’s East General Hospi-
tal in the payroll department.
“She’s a fabulous woman, I think she could
have been a stand-up comic,” said Gail
Kostandoff, whose parents were such good
friends with Ms. Fenby that she became like
a relation. “She has a very sharp wit, and she
knows how to use it.”
Barbara Naylor, Ms. Fenby’s goddaugh-
ter, says she feels lucky to still be able to visit
with her godmother.
“Not many people my age can say they
have a godmother,” said Ms. Naylor, 80.
“Kitty is a wonderful person and a
lovely lady, I’ve known her all my
life.”
As friends and relatives gathered
to congratulate Ms. Fenby during
a celebration at Orchard Villa on
Feb. 29, they were reminded that
as a leapling, Ms. Fenby was tech-
nically only celebrating her 25th
birthday. Despite the age error, Ms.
Fenby said she was enjoying the
festivities.
“It’s wonderful, it’s a lot of
extra work people didn’t have to do
and they did it all for me, which is so nice,”
she said.
When asked about future plans, Ms. Fenby
said she’d like to “keep going and help other
residents” at Orchard Villa. Luckily, the
renowned humourist has just the thing to
keep their spirits up. “Evidently, everyone
likes to laugh,” she said.

Good SamaritanS
Kind people stopped
to help bleeding pet
To the editor:
I just wanted to thank a couple of women
who stopped to help me out when I was
stuck in a scary predicament.
On Tuesday, Feb. 14, I was walking my
two dogs in Oshawa when my dog, Chi-
nook, started yelping.
I turned and noticed his leg was bleed-
ing. I quickly put one of my gloves over the
cut and put pressure to stop the blood flow
so that I could assess the situation, but the
bleeding would not stop.
I noticed a couple across the street walk-
ing a dog so I yelled to see if they had a cell-
phone. The woman came running across
the road and offered her scarf to tie around
Chinook’s leg (I declined for fear of ruining
it).
Though she did not have a cellphone she
flagged down an approaching bus. The
bus driver was kind enough to lend me her
phone, but I could not reach anyone.
She then opened up her first-aid kit and
gave me supplies to use so I could get Chi-
nook’s leg wrapped up enough to get him
home. The woman with the scarf offered to
walk home with us, but I declined since we
were close to home.
I got Chinook to a vet with his leg still
bleeding. It turns out that whatever had cut
him nicked an artery and he needed sur-
gery.
My pet is now healing quite nicely and I
just wanted these two women to know that
I really appreciated them stopping and
helping.
It is nice to know that we can still rely on
the kindness of strangers.
Thank you.

Vision shared by
local businesses
To the editor:
Re: ‘Province recognizes Durham’s prima-
ry role in powering Ontario’, editorial opin-
ion, durhamregion.com, Feb. 17, 2012.
You will be interested to know that your
‘call to arms’ statement that “the efforts
here at home to promote Durham as an
energy powerhouse must continue” is a
vision shared by local business.
Coincidentally, the Greater Oshawa
Chamber of Commerce is in the process
of renewing its sun-setting resolution with
the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, urging
the government of Ontario, in co-operation
with other stakeholders, including the fed-
eral government, to “ensure that Ontario,
and Canada, employ a ‘made-in-Ontario’
nuclear energy strategy that will continue
to provide jobs, encourage investment and
foster economic strength for the Ontario
and Canadian economies in the coming
decades.”
As you pointed out, energy expansion is
a crucial element in the economy of Dur-
ham Region now and in the future. I would
like to commend you for your leadership
on this issue.

Watch out for tax
credit changes this year
To the editor:
Dalton McGuinty and his mathematically
challenged finance minister, Dwight Dun-
can, have really done a number on Ontar-
io taxpayers. All hell is going to break loose
when Ontarians do their 2011 income tax
returns.
No longer will you be able to claim the
property tax credit, sales tax credit, or the
energy credit on your income tax return in
order to offset taxes to be paid, or to get a
refund.
These credits will be paid to you in quar-
terly instalments beginning in July 2012
and ending in April 2013.
Seniors will be especially hard hit. If
income taxes are owed, they will have to
come up with the money by the end of
April 2012. If they are a homeowner, the
first two instalments of property taxes are
due in February and April. What a hit they
are going to take. Why didn’t the Liberals
tell us they were going to do this before last
year’s election?
This is going to cause very serious reper-
cussions for many seniors.

Freedom of expression encouraged, conditions apply
Paul Gomille, a Grade 12 student at
Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic
High School in Ajax, would not be the first
young man in history to run into a little
trouble after penning a love letter. His Val-
entine’s Day gift to classmates, ‘A love let-
ter to all women’, began with a moment of
inspiration and good intent, and ended
with his two-day suspension from school.
If the point of an education is to teach
children how to think critically for them-
selves, stand up for their beliefs and val-
ues, and strive to make a difference in the
world around them, then the Catholic
school board in Durham Region should
instead take pride in Paul Gomille.
“Real attractiveness comes from having
a certain dignity,” he wrote in his letter,
which he handed out in the school cafete-
ria. “It comes from having class. It comes
from being true to yourself, being your-
self, and being comfortable in your own
skin.”
The content of the letter, its intent and
the school’s ultimate decision to suspend
Paul are only the broad brush strokes of
the issue, which -- as most conflicts do --
has several more layers.
School officials, after originally welcom-
ing the missive, later ordered changes to it
and, to his credit, Paul bristled, stood his
ground and ultimately faced the heavy-
handed consequence -- his first school
suspension -- for doing so. It’s hard to
escape the irony behind the suspension.
As a result of his letter, which is consis-
tently respectful in its tone and which
calls on young women to be true to them-
selves, Paul was ordered by school offi-
cials to abandon his honestly held and
honourably expressed convictions.
The suspension ostensibly surrounds
Paul’s decision to print copies of the letter
and hand them out, a challenge to school
authority.
But it appears that the notion of criti-
cal thinking, standing on principle and
choosing to remain true to one’s beliefs --
the over-arching theme of Paul’s love let-
ter -- is not encouraged at the school, but
merely tolerated, to the extent that certain
school administrators alone shall deter-
mine.
For every action, there is a reaction. Few
of us will go through life without testing
the boundaries of ‘authority’, and some of
us will find that even the best of intentions
are ignored, the circumstances deemed
irrelevant, sometimes wilfully so.
In the interests of demonstrating fair-
ness, justice and grace, the school should
wipe the suspension -- a heavy-hand-
ed punishment for such a ‘crime’ -- from
Paul’s record.

Monsieur Lazhar
screened march 7
AJAX -- The Ajax Film Circuit is
screening an acclaimed movie.
Monsieur Lazhar is shown
March 7 at 7 p.m. at the Ajax
Cineplex Odeon.
“This film has already received
extraordinary attention, includ-
ing Best Canadian Feature Film
at the 2011 Toronto Internation-
al Film Festival and is Canada’s
submission for the Best Foreign
Language Film in the 84th Acad-
emy Awards (in French with
English subtitles),” states a press
release. The film lost to Iranian
film A Separation.
“This is a complex charac-
ter study of loss, innocence
and imposture in which Bachir
Lazhar, a middle-aged Algerian
immigrant seeking political ref-
uge in Quebec, becomes a Mon-
treal schoolteacher and learns as
much from his students as they
from him.”
Tickets are $7 in advance at all
Ajax Public Library branches or
$7.50 at the theatre on film night.
You don’t have to be a member
to see the films. For more infor-
mation on the circuit, or to be
added to the circuit e-mail list,

AJAX -- The Ajax Film Circuit presents ‘Monsieur Lazhar’ on March 7.
Fledgling west durham
band in the running at
music showcase event
mike ruta
mruta@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Matt Riches, isn’t he that folk
guy?
The Pickering singer/songwriter gets that
a lot, and it’s understandable.
Riches wrote Here In Durham, which last
year won the Durham Region Jingle Contest
sponsored by Durham Tourism.
But listening to his new band, Retro Cir-
cuit, which plays alternative rock, you
wouldn’t mistake Riches for a folk guy.
“I’ve always been a rock guy,” he says. “My
roots are in rock and I feel that’s where we’re
going.”
Retro Circuit is also going to The Opera
House in Toronto. The band won first place
at a Landmark Showcase Competition 2012
event at Toronto’s Mod Club at the end of
January and is headed to the finals at The
Opera House, likely at the end of April. The
event is being held simultaneously in Mon-
treal, Toronto and Ottawa and five winners
from each city will be chosen.
Riches is predicting a win.
“I think we will,” he says. “I feel really good
about this. I’m not being cocky.
“(The Mod Club show) wasn’t our best
performance; it went well but playing-wise
I thought we could do better.”
Perhaps, but Retro Circuit attracted some
attention at the event. After the show, Riches
says the judges took the band aside, saying
they had a lot of potential.
The Landmark contest winners receive a
slew of prizes, including recording time and
mastering sessions.
The band is also competing in the Spring
Music Festival and Y108 Rock and Roll
Challenge, with $5,000 in cash and $25,000
in prizes going to the winner.
They’ve played several shows in Toronto,
not bad for a band together for just a few
months. In addition to Riches, Retro Cir-
cuit is made up of drummer Matt Davey of
Ajax, bassist Curtis Stewart of Pickering and
rhythm guitarist Eric Coe of Woodbridge.
Riches describes them as a mix between
The Killers and Muse. They started writing
songs in November and now have a cata-
logue of 10 original tunes, with more in the
works.
“I’ve been writing all the lyrics and we’ve
been collaborating on the music,” he says.
Riches has been putting in a lot of time on
the band, not easy when you consider he
has a day job.
“I come home and music is my other full-
time job,” he says. “We’re contacting a lot of
people, writing songs and trying to get them
on Facebook. Eventually it will pay off.”
Check them out at www.retrocircuitmu-
sic.com or on Facebook. Listen to Retro
Circuit’s Life Span at www.youtube.com/

Celebrating black history
TORONTO -- PineRidge Arts Council members were invited to a Black History Month reception at
Queen’s Park on Feb. 22. At the event were, from left, Scarborough-Guildwood MPP and Minister of
Consumer Services Margarett Best, Pickering sculptor Dorsey James, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty
and Esther Forde, owner of Ajax’s Cultural Expressions art gallery.
AChievment
Award launched for Aboriginal artists, arts leaders
DURHAM -- A new award has been created to rec-
ognize the province’s Aboriginal artists and arts
leaders.
The Ontario Arts Council Aboriginal Arts Award
was launched at the end of January, a $7,500 prize to
celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal artists and
arts leaders in Ontario.
“The Ontario Arts Council Aboriginal Arts Award
is an important recognition of the outstanding
impact Aboriginal artists and Aboriginal arts lead-
ers make in their communities, and in our broader
cultural landscape,” said John Brotman, OAC execu-
tive director. “OAC is proud to create an award that
honours their contributions to the arts in Ontario.”
The recipient will then identify another artist for a
prize, as each year the winner will name an emerg-
ing Aboriginal artist “who best exemplifies the next
generation of Aboriginal leadership in the arts.” The
person receives $2,500.
The deadline to nominate is before April 2.
The winners will be announced at an Ontario cel-
ebration during National Aboriginal History Month
in June each year. Any Ontarian, Aboriginal or non-
Aboriginal, can nominate for the award.
To be eligible, Aboriginal artists or arts leaders
must live in Ontario, or Quebec in the national capi-
tal region, and be a Canadian citizen or permanent
resident of Canada.
Download nomination guidelines and forms on
the OAC website, www.arts.on.ca, or call the OAC’s
awards office for more information, 1-800-387-0058,
ext. 7423.

P JW-Jones plays
Pickering March 16
PICKERING -- Music By The Bay
Live presents one of Canada’s top
blues guitarists playing a March
16 show in Pickering.
JW-Jones has picked and
strummed with a veritable con-
stellation of guitar heroes and
his playing has received critical
acclaim.
“Guitar World Magazine fea-
tured a CD called Guitar Mas-
ters Vol. 2 that put Jones along-
side guitar stars B.B. King, Jimmy
Page and Carlos Santana among
others, which led him to an
endorsement deal with Gibson
guitars,” states his website.
But on his seventh disc, Sev-
enth Hour, Jones eschewed the
star power, saying it was time to
shake things up and get back to
basics.
“After performing in 17 coun-
tries, four continents and releas-
ing six critically acclaimed discs,
it’s time for a change,” states the
website. “No famous guests. No
fancy studios. This is JW-Jones
and his band doing what they do
best -- right at home, recorded in
J-Dub’s living room.”
The concert is at 9 p.m. at The
Waterfront, 590 Liverpool Rd.,
Pickering.
Tickets are $30 and available
at The Waterfront and online at
musicbythebaylive.com.

PICKERING -- The Dunbarton senior girls’ volleyball team has qualified for the OFSAA Quad-A championships in Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge. Dunbarton beat Donald A.
Wilson of Whitby in the LOSSA championship game.

PICKERING -- A year ago, the Dun-
barton Spartans senior girls’ volleyball
team reached a final game at the Quad-A
OFSAA championships held in Newmar-
ket.
It wasn’t the game they wanted to be
in, however, relegated to the consolation
round after finishing third in pool play.
They did make the most of the opportu-
nity, sweeping Glebe, Mother Teresa and
Waterdown in the playoff round on the
way to becoming consolation champi-
ons.
With a strong cast of returning play-
ers, the team went on a mission to bet-
ter that performance, and has succeeded
in getting the opportunity after winning
the LOSSA championship over Donald A.
Wilson of Whitby. The best high school
teams in the province will be in Kitchen-
er-Waterloo-Cambridge for the OFSAA
championships that run March 5-7.
“Last year when we won the consola-
tion finals, I was like, ‘Next year we are
coming back as the No. 1 seed’. We real-
ly only lost one player from our start-
ing line, so the girls have known all year
that this is our year to do well,” says head
coach Cheri Mowbray.
“We knew we were capable of winning
LOSSA and things went well for us. We’re
hoping to do very well at OFSAA this year.
Our goal is to medal.”
Dunbarton has represented LOSSA at
the OFSAA championships three of the
past four years. Seeded seventh for last
year’s tournament, Mowbray is expecting
to be included in the top five this time
out, maybe even as high as two or three,
she notes. In LOSSA league play, Dun-
barton finished the regular season 9-2,
good enough for third place in the West
Division. Their only losses came to Wil-
son and Henry St., who finished tied atop
the standings at 10-1.
In tournament play there were gold
medal wins at Sinclair and Havergal, with
a silver earned at Birchmount. Along the
way they topped some of the best teams
in the province, including Mowat, Forrest
Heights and Sinclair, who won gold at
OFSAA last year. Dunbarton clipped Sin-
clair twice this season, once in the Sin-
clair tournament and again in the LOSSA
semifinals.
Mowbray attributes much of the team’s
success to the team’s depth.
“I have 12 players this year. Usually
I have six or seven that are key players.
This year I’ve got nine that will see the
court and be an integral part of anything
we do,” she says.
Of note are a couple of players who
Mowbray feels have the potential to move
on to a higher level in the United States.
Setter Julie Henderson is a Grade 12 stu-
dent who may draw some interest from
NCAA Division 2 schools, while anoth-
er up-and-comer is Jaime Fryer, a Grade
11 student who is likely to draw interest
from NCAA Division 1 programs.
Because Sinclair won gold at OFSAA
last year, it guaranteed LOSSA two entries
this year, so despite losing the LOSSA
final to Dunbarton, Wilson will be com-
peting for a provincial title next week as
well.
We knew we were capable of winning LOSSA and things went well for us. We’re hoping to do very well at OFSAA this year. Our goal is to
medal. Cheri Mowbray

Annandale won both of
the spots out of the OCA
bantam mixed zone held
in Port Perry Feb. 25-26.
Four of the seven teams
were from Annandale. Dil-
lon Pierce won the A side
with Kendra Pierce, Evan
Heaslip and Brigit Hea-
slip with Renee Lalonde
coaching. Matt Hall won
the B side with Kaitlin
Jewer, Cody McGhee and
Emma Becker with Lesley
Pyne as coach. The other
Annandale entries were
skipped by Ryan Yee and
Andre Lima.
The two winning teams
now advance to the region-
al slated for Oakville Curl-
ing Club March 10-11. The
Hall team was fresh off a
win at the East York ban-
tam/junior bonspiel on
Feb. 18. The competition
put the team in good stead
for this zone playdown.
The OCA junior mixed
zone was also held in Port
Perry Feb. 25-26. Jennifer
McGhee coached Ben Bev-
an’s junior mixed team of
Margot Flemming, Carter
Adair and Megan Arnold
as lead. There were only
two entries in the zone
and only one team could
advance. The team won
the necessary two games
straight, and now advance
to the regional to be held
in Oakville March 10-11.
Two Annandale mem-
bers, Gord Norton and
Warren Leslie, were in
the Ontario senior men’s
Ontario championship
with three-time Canadi-
an seniors champion, Bob
Turcotte of Ajax. The team
played out of Scarborough
Golf and Curling Club
along with Roy Weigand
as vice. The Ontario finals
were held Feb. 22-26 at the
Simcoe Curling Club. After
the round robin, the team
was tied for third with a 4
-3 record. They were side-
lined in a tiebreaker on
Sunday morning.
Team Joudrey, curling
out of Tam Heather Curl-
ing Club, competed at
the Ontario bantam finals
from Feb. 8-12 in Galt.
They finished tied for
first place after the round
robin. They lost on last
rock in the tiebreaker on
Sunday morning for the
banner. As a result of their
finish, they qualified for
the Ontario Winter Games
March 8-10 in Colling-
wood. The team consisted
of Conor Joudrey, Joseph
Hart, Kurt Armstrong and
David Hart, with Pickering
Olympian Richard Hart as
coach.

Wakefield collects 200th
NCAA career point
BOSTON, MASS. -- Senior captain Jenn
Wakefield of Pickering notched a hat trick
and added an assist en route to collecting
her 200th career point, as the No. 9 Boston
University women’s hockey team routed
New Hampshire, 9-1, in a Hockey East
quarter-final round.
BU will play second-seeded Boston Col-
lege on Saturday, March 3 in the second
Hockey East semifinal game in Hyannis,
Mass. Providence and Northeastern will
meet in the other semifinal contest.
Wakefield became the second player in
Hockey East Tournament history to record
a hat trick and the first player to accom-
plish that feat in the quarter-finals. She is
also the second skater in league history to
reach the 200-point plateau, joining Kelli
Stack of Boston College.
It was also a record-setting day for the
Terriers, as they set a program best for
most goals in a single postseason game.
They also tallied three shorthanded goals,
which is a Hockey East Tournament
record.
Wakefield completed her hat trick with a
shorthanded goal at the 11:58 mark of the
third.

During these tough economic times,
businesses need an affordable way to advertise
their products and services and create a name for
themselves in the community.
The Focus on Business advertising
feature was designed to help businesses succeed
at an affordable price. The feature has five
zones: Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby and
Clarington, and advertisers can choose to run in
any number of them. If they want to target a
specific area, they can choose one zone or if they
want broad coverage they can choose to run in
all five.
Advertising packages are available for
six weeks, 18 weeks, 36 weeks and 52 weeks,
and discounted rates are available for longer-
term commitments.
“I have nothing but good things to
say about the Focus on Business feature,” says
Wayne Hutchison, owner of Durham Windows
and Doors, who has been advertising in the
feature for 15 years.
Having an ad in the newspaper every
week helps businesses build recognition. Readers
who see the advertisement on a regular basis
become familiar with the business. Running in
the section long term shows potential customers
that the business is consistent and is there for the
long term.
The feature includes a 3” wide by 1.5”
deep ad, but the best part is the free editorial that
comes with each six week run.
The articles will talk in-depth about the
business and can include a photograph or image.
Many advertisers find that the articles provide
a surge in phone calls and sales. The articles
allow readers to learn more about the businesses,
including detailed information about the products
and services they offer.
Many advertisers have seen a dramatic
increase in their bottom line because of advertising
in the section.
For more information on the Focus on
Business feature or to book an ad, please call
Connie Baker at (905) 579-4400 ext. 2271 or
email cbaker@durhamregion.com.

Small honoured by OUA
PICKERING -- Erin Small capped off her
fifth year as a member of the Guelph Gry-
phons in style.
The Pickering resident was recently
honoured by the OUA for her fine season,
being named a second-team all-star.
A five-foot-four centre, Small lit up the
scoresheet this season for the Gryphons,
finishing with 34 points to lead the team,
and posting totals that were good enough
for second in the entire league.
In 26 games Small had 16 goals and
18 assists, finishing four points behind
Queen’s forward Morgan McHaffie for
top spot in the league and eight points up
on Jessica Pinkerton for the team lead.
Perhaps most impressive about her
numbers is the fact Small was remark-
ably consistent this season, scoring at
least one point in all but five of Guelph’s
regular season games. She never went
more than one game without finding the
scoresheet.
Another highlight for Small was a sev-
en-game point streak she had to open the
season. In that span she managed seven
goals and 14 points.
Guelph finished the regular season in
second place with an 18-6-2 record, but
was upset in the first round of the play-
offs by Windsor in two games, losing 3-2
and 1-0.

In Loving Memory of a Wonderful
Husband, Father, Grampa & Papa
Robert "Bob"
Taylor
February 20, 1947 ~
March 2, 2011
It is sad to walk the road alone
Instead of side by side.
But to all those comes a moment
When the ways of life divide.
You gave me years of happiness,
Then came sorrow and tears.
But you left me beautiful memories,.
I will treasure through the years
Love always,
Your wife Janette
Dad,
You're greatly missed along life's way,
Quietly remembered every day.
No longer in our lives to share,
But in our hearts Dad
You'll always be there.
Miss you Always
Son Tom (Carol),
Daughter Jennifer (Jeff)
Granddaughters Haleigh & Charlotte
Grandson William
