Durham police responded to two separate incidents ear- lier this month in which people plunged through the ice. No one was seriously hurt, but a num- ber of victims had to be treated at hospital after falling into the frigid waters. “No ice is safe ice,” said Rich- ard Miller, Scugog’s fire chief, on Monday. “We’ve had a bad freeze-up this year, so you’re taking your chances going out there.” The first incident saw a snow- mobile rider plunged through the ice on the east side of Scugog Island late at nioght. A friend res- cued the rider but the two men became disoriented on the dark- ened lake. The police helicopter responded, helping emergency crews reach the men. The second incident, the next night, saw five people fall through the ice, along with a snowmobile, an ATV and a trail- er, in the area of Whitfield Road. Everyone made it safely to shore and they were taken to hospital in Port Perry. Air 1, the Durham force’s heli- copter, surveyed the lake ear- lier this month from above and found numerous large open areas of water, say police. That’s consistent with the message from Scugog fire officials, who are reporting wildly inconsistent ice conditions. “There’s six to eight inches in one spot and one inch to noth- ing in another spot,” said Rob Gonnermann, the Scugog Fire Department’s deputy chief. “It’s not consistent at all so you have to be very wary -- especially at night. There are various spots on the lake that are open or very thin.” This winter’s fluctuating temper- atures have made ice conditions increasingly unpredictable, say authorities. “People seem lulled into think- ing the deep freeze is here and the ice is thick enough, that it’s safe. But we haven’t had that two weeks of cold, cold weather yet,” said Staff-Sergeant Jim Griepsma of Durham’s North Division. “I know people spend a lot of money (on snowmobiles) and it’s hard for them to wait, but we’re asking them to be patient,” he added. Even the snowmobile com- munity is encouraging sledding enthusiasts to stay clear of Lake Scugog and other local bodies of water. “With the weather we’ve been having, the ice is not even close to being safe. It’s definitely not safe to be out there on sled or by foot,” said Rick Sauer, who takes care of events and promotions for the Port Perry Snowmobile Club. “If you don’t know, don’t go.” Scugog fire crews are called, on average, to about four ice or lake rescues each winter on Lake Scugog -- calls that add up for township taxpayers. “It’s like smoke alarms: We always tell people to change their batteries but if they don’t listen, what can we do? It’s the same as warning people about being careful on the ice.” For more information on safe snowmobiling and which trails are open, visit the OFSC website at ofsc.on.ca. ~ With files from Jeff Mitchell Celia Klemenz / metroland SCUGOG -- As ice huts dot the horizon and sledders skid around on the ice, Durham Regional Police and Scugog Fire Department are warning folks to be careful when they venture out onto the fro- zen surface of Lake Scugog. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ja n u a r y 2 7 , 2 0 1 2 11 AP Mike Ruta Entertainment Editor mruta@durhamregion.com durhamregion.comMonth in the Arts On Stage To Feb. 4 Ajax Community Theatre. pres- ents Dial “M” For Murder at the St. Francis Centre, 78 Church St. S., Ajax. ajaxcommunitytheatre. com, 289-892-4132.
