Refuge sets $40,000 goal

DURHAM -- For most people, a blustery
winter day means being inconvenienced
by shovelling the driveway or adding
extra time to their commute.
For local homeless youth, it means
walking -- sometimes for hours -- in the
cold, snow, wind and sleet.
“They don’t have cars, they can’t afford
bus tickets so they walk everywhere they
have to go,” said Clarence Keesman,
executive director at the Refuge, an
Oshawa-based outreach centre for Dur-
ham’s homeless and street youth.
A fundraiser coming up on Saturday,
Feb. 25 will offer a momentary glimpse
of what that life is like.
The Coldest Night of the Year walk will
see participants walk five or 10 kilome-
tres after dark on what is likely to be a
chilly night.
“The idea is to have everyone get a
little miserable, but also to have some
fun,” Mr. Keesman explained.
“Whether it’s freezing rain or snowing,
we’ll be out there walking, just like the
youth are.”
The walk started last year as a pilot
project in Toronto and Kitchener-Water-
loo to help “the homeless, hungry and
hurting.”
About 400 walkers raised $110,000
which was divided among the Ray of
Hope, Yonge Street Mission and Sanctu-
ary ministries.
This year Coldest Night of the Year
events are taking place in 18 communi-
ties across Canada with a goal of raising
$300,000 in total.
The Refuge has set a goal of $40,000
and plans to use proceeds to support
new programs, such as a Sunday night
“family dinner” for the youth, and din-
ners for college and university students
in need.
Mr. Keesman has vowed to wear shorts
everywhere he goes for the entire month
of March if the Refuge reaches its goal.
In 2011 the Refuge served 504 youths,
up from 464 in 2010.
Last year also saw 10,304 meals served
and 262 youths visit the centre for the
first time.
Programs include daily breakfast and
lunch, Friday night dinner, access to
a shower and laundry, art classes and
camping trips.
An estimated 92 per cent of youth who
come to the Refuge have been sexually
or physically abused, while 72 per cent
were asked to leave home by their par-
ents or caregivers.
The centre was nearly forced to close
its doors in late 2011 after a drop in
donations plunged the books $10,000 in
the red.
The community rushed to the rescue
and more than $30,000 was donated in a
matter of weeks.
“We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for
that,” Mr. Keesman noted.
The local Coldest Night of the Year walk
starts from Life Seventh-day Adventist
Church, 33 Olive Ave. in Oshawa.
Registration is at 4 p.m. on Feb. 25, fol-
lowed by opening ceremonies at 5 p.m.
and start of the walk at 5:15 p.m.
Free coffee and hot chocolate will
be available at two rest stops along the
route and the night caps off with a hot
meal at the Refuge.

Murderous fun at Ajax Community Theatre

OSHAWA -- Dial M for Murder is
the opposite of a whodunnit: we
know who did it, but the work is
still full of tension for an audi-
ence. The kick the viewer gets is
in knowing what the characters
don’t and seeing how everything
plays out.
Ajax Community Theatre pres-
ents the Frederick Knott play
Jan. 26 to Feb. 4 at the St. Francis
Centre.
“For the audience, it’s ‘how
will (Tony Wendice) get caught’,”
says director Jonathan Aiken.
“You go between that and ‘will
he get away with this, how will
he get away with this, he can’t
get away with this’.”
Dial M is the story of Wen-
dice’s plot to kill his wealthy
wife, Margot. But things don’t
go exactly as planned, not even
close, and it doesn’t help that a
clever police inspector is on the
case.
Many know the famous movie,
directed by Alfred Hitchcock
and starring Grace Kelly and Ray
Milland, And while Aiken says
the play and film are basically
word-for-word identical, there
are differences in the characters
that will be apparent in the play.
For one, Milland “was a touch
on the old side” for the charac-
ter. And Kelly’s Margot, who in
the film appears weak and ner-
vous, is a different person in the
play.
“I found when I was reading
the text that the leading lady was
a bit of a stronger character than
in the movie,” he says. “We found
moments in the script where she
is actually arguing with her hus-
band. She’s offended by some of
the things he’s done.”
Finally, Aiken says the play’s
structure is almost like a come-
dy and the cast has “found a lot
of humour in the play.” While
“there’s no way we’re going to
turn this into a comedy,” he says
there is one moment he plans
to milk a bit. Aiken’s convinced
that the clever Chief Inspector
Hubbard inspired the rumpled
but lovable TV detective Colom-
bo, famous for infuriating those
he’s questioning by turning to
leave but then turning back to
ask one more question. Aiken
notes there’s actually a moment
in the play where Hubbard deliv-
ers the “one more thing” line.
Beyond his age, Aiken says
there’s very little room to tinker
with Tony Wendice, the charac-
ter.
“He’s in it for the money and
he sees an opportunity... and he
has no qualms about it,” he says.
“He manipulates the other fel-
low into going along (with it).
It’s fun to watch the villain char-
acter struggling to keep to his
goal, you could say.”
The whole play is “a real treat,”
Aiken says.
“It is not very action-oriented;
it is character driven and really
relies on the actors.”
The cast features Ajacians
James Burrell, Catharine Spei-
ran, Ian Speiran and Andy
Arms-Roberts and Daniel Wyse
of Whitby.

AJAX -- The Ajax Film Circuit’s
next offering has distinctly Cana-
dian content.
Billy Bishop Goes to War, about
Canada’s pre-eminent First World
War fighter pilot, is screened on
Feb. 1.
“Nearing the end of his life, an
aged Billy Bishop (Eric Peter-
son), the legendary First World
War flying ace from Owen Sound,
recounts the triumphs and horrors
of the First World War -- ‘the war
to end all wars’,” states www.trib-

“Through raucous stories,
haunting memories and vibrant
song, Bishop traces his journey
from Royal Military College trou-
blemaker to the top flying ace of
the British Empire.”
Ajax Film Circuit movies are
screened one Wednesday a month
from September through May

in Jan. 28 music festival

WHITBY -- An evening of songs and song-
writers is back in Durham for a second
year.
The Songwriters’ Music Festival features
largely Durham musicians on Jan. 28 at
Whitby Courthouse Theatre.
“I’m very excited,” says founder Ron Beer.
“It’s going to be a very exciting show.”
The Whitby musician and songwriter has
been on a mission in recent years to pro-
mote local songwriters. In addition to the
festival, he’s created songwriters’ groups
in several Durham municipalities and last
summer introduced the Songwriters at the
Lake concert series, held in Whitby and
Ajax.
“I made so many friends,” he says. “I sat on
so many backpacks playing guitar with peo-
ple.”
His latest effort is to have a Durham song-
writers’ hall of fame established in Claring-
ton.
Beer is pumped that his efforts are paying
off. He noted that an early January audition
for the festival in Bowmanville attracted a
great turnout.
The festival line-up features local musi-
cians Hallie Anthony and Paul Scofield of
Ajax, Oshawa’s GT Harris, Kimberly Clark,
Ed Babut and Ray Smith, James Simpson of
Bowmanville and Beer.
As well, Beer is pumped about a young
musician from Clarington, James Vander-
beke, who is playing the festival.
“He’s the new kid in town,” Beer says.
Special guests at the concert are What’s in
the Water from Halifax and percussionist BJ
Laub from Windsor.
He says Babut and Smith are MCs for the
night.
“They are funny,” Beer says. “The two of
them are like an old married couple.”
New to the festival this year is FUSION.
Beer explains that in each of the two sets, a
local artist will interpret on canvas the music
as it’s played, with the ongoing creation pro-
jected onto a screen. The artists painting
what they hear are Janice Brown and Shan-
non Bowdring.
The festival will also see musicians recog-
nized with awards.
“These artists don’t know that they’ve won
yet and that will be really exciting to see the
smiles on their faces,” Beer says.
The concert is at 7:30 p.m. and the theatre
is at 416 Centre St. S. (in the Whitby Centen-
nial Building), Whitby.

crunching heavy metal to Oshawa for a
gigantic concert.
The iconic rockers, for the first time since

OSHAWA -- Playing on an inter-
national hockey stage was both
fun and disappointing for Bran-
don Robinson.
The Pickering resident rep-
resented Ontario at the World
Under-17 Challenge held in Wind-
sor over the Christmas holidays,
allowing the 16 year old to take
a break from the grind of playing
in the OHL with the Brampton
Battalion, and suit up with and
against players his own age.
While he felt honoured to be
selected, and had fun at the tour-
nament, it ended in a disap-
pointing and premature fashion.
In Ontario’s third game against
Team Atlantic, Robinson was
coming out of the penalty box, cut
through the middle of the ice and
collided with another player.
Having his “bell rung” as he put
it sidelined him for the rest of the
tournament, including a 4-3 over-
time loss in the semifinals to Rus-
sia and a 5-2 win over Sweden in
the bronze medal game.
“I saw a doctor and he said
there was no concussion, but they
wanted to sit me out as a pre-
caution,” said Robinson during a
recent visit to Oshawa to face the
Generals.
“It was a great experience and
I had a lot of fun. I would have
loved to have played in the semis
and gold medal game.”
What his limited experience at
the tournament did provide was
a boost in his confidence, scor-
ing once and adding an assist in
the three games he played. As
an underage rookie with the Bat-
talion, Robinson suits up against
players as much as four years
older in the OHL. It’s easy to start
to question whether you belong.
“After playing against 20 year
olds for the majority of the sea-
son, to go back to your own age
you just see how much you’ve
improved since August and Sep-
tember. After that it gives you a
lot of confidence coming back to
your home club.
“It was fun to get back with guys
my own age who I have played
against my whole life. It was really
fun.”
After putting up 49-46-95 point
totals in minor midget with the
Toronto Jr. Canadiens, Robinson
was selected by the Battalion in
the first round, seventh overall,
in last year’s draft. Heading into
Thursday’s game against Plym-
outh, the six-foot-two, 195-pound
winger had nine goals and five
assists in 34 games.
“At the start of the year it was a
little challenging trying to get up
to the speed and tempo, trying to
make quicker decisions,” he said
of the transition to junior hockey.
“I think I’m getting up there and
playing a lot better and feeling
more comfortable with the team
and how I’m playing.”
He’s delivered when asked, with
three of his nine goals coming on
the power play, and five of them
serving as game winners to lead
all rookies, though he was quick
to point out that two of those win-
ners came in the first period and
the Battalion went on to record a
shutout.
For the most part, head coach
Stan Butler has been happy with
the play of Robinson.
“Like any young guy, he’s got to
continue to learn the game. As he
matures I think you will see good
things out of him,” he said.
As for the trip to Oshawa, as
expected, there were family and a
lot of friends in attendance, mak-
ing his first game so close to home
a little more special than the rest.
“I knew a lot of people were
going to be here. I tried not to let
it get to me or make me nervous.
It was a good feeling to be close to
home.”

spiel that goes Jan. 28 at
Annandale is not only full,
but has two teams on a
waiting list. The bonspiel
features two six-end games,
lunch, supper and dancing.
Two Annandale mem-
bers, Gord Norton and War-
ren Leslie, have teamed up
with three-time Canadi-
an seniors champion, Bob
Turcotte of Ajax. Gord Nor-
ton is lead, second is War-
ren Leslie playing competi-
tively this season with Bob
Turcotte, and Roy Weigand
as vice, out of Scarborough
Golf and Curling Club Zone
7. They won the B side of a
14 team double knockout
Dominion Senior Men’s
Zone playdown at the Scar-
borough Golf and Coun-
try Club on Dec. 17-21. The
team now advances to the
Regional at the Dixie Curl-
ing Club Jan. 28-29. Two
winners will go to the Ontar-
io finals a month later at the
Simcoe Curling Club.

cki. They advance to the
Regional Playdown at the

Feb. 4-5. The event leads
to a provincial champion-
ship to be held Feb. 15-18 in

The 117th running of the
TCA men’s bonspiel, spon-
sored by Goldline, started
Jan. 7 and ran across Toron-
to with the finals held Jan.
14. Annandale had seven
teams competing, all in
the seniors draw. Sandy
McMillan lasted the longest,
bowing out in the senior
fourth event on Jan. 12.

silver in 18U tournament

WELLAND -- Going into its
first 18U tournament of the
season, the Durham Attack
17U girls’ team didn’t
know what to expect.
The fact that they were
starting in the premiere
division in this older age
group was both excit-
ing, but at the same time,
intimidating.
The tournament was
held at Niagara College in
Welland and started with
the Attack girls going up
against DRVC 18U (from
Durham). The first set was
easily won with a score of
25-15. The second set was
more of a struggle, and
even though the Attack
fought hard, they lost
21-25. After a slow start
and a few points down,
Attack came back to tie the
game, but in the end lost
the tie breaker 18-20.
The next team up in the
pool was the Predators
Purple 18U (from Kitch-
ener-Waterloo), a team
Attack had great difficulty
with last year. The first set
did not show that howev-
er. After an amazing game
with some improved serv-
ing, the Attack beat the
Preds handily 25-15. The
second set proved that
their first win was not just
luck. They again won with
a solid score of 25-19.
Despite losing to DRVC
earlier in the day, the
Attack still came out on top
of their pool, having won
the most sets. This took
them straight into quarter-
finals to face South County
Bandits (Windsor/Essex).
After some amazing mid-
dle plays, wicked blocks
and consistent serving, the
Attack beat the Bandits in
both sets with scores of
25-14 and 25-22.
In the semis, the Attack
played the Ottawa Maver-
icks 18U. The Mavs offence,
however, was not a match
for the Attack defence.
After some incredible vol-
leyball, Durham Attack
won both sets 25-21 and
25-22 taking them to the
gold medal match.
Forest City Green’s 17U
team was also able to get
through the older teams,
earning a spot in the final.
After two exciting sets
and with only a two-point
difference in both sets,
the Attack lost 24-26 and
23-25, bringing home a sil-
ver medal.

2012 at Ajax-Pickering Hospital after
a bad fall at home on Friday night,
January 6th, 2012. Dearly beloved
husband of Merrilyn (nee Ferris) for
43 years, beloved father of Ross in
Peterborough, adored Grandpa of
Erin Evans in Peterborough, loved
brother of Lorne (Irene) in Burlington
and loved uncle of Rob and Erin
Evans in Burlington. Predeceased
by parents Jane Coghill Webb and
Robert Pengelly Evans. Bruce
graduated from the University of
Toronto’s medical school in 1967.
After an internship at St. Michael’s
Hospital, he became a family

Scarborough for 22 years. A further
11 years followed at his own
office at 2555 Eglinton Ave. East,
followed by 11 years with MCI
Medical Clinics. He was a patient,
dedicated, much loved family doctor
by all his patients who often came
great distances to see him. As he
was a great admirer of the work
done by the Salvation Army, the
family would greatly appreciate
donations to it in his memory.
The family’s depth of despair
necessitated a private family service
which has already been held.
