The doctor, who practised as a GP, is accused of sexually assaulting the girl on a num- ber of occasions between 1993 and 1998, beginning when she was 16 and continuing into her 20s, Durham police said. An investigation was launched when the complainant, now 34, approached police in November 2011. He is charged with sexual exploitation and sexual assault. He was released on condi- tions following a bail hearing in Oshawa Wednesday. A representative of the Ontario College of Physicians and Sur- geons said Wednesday the col- lege is aware of the allegations. An investigation is pending, said senior communications co- ordinator Kathryn Clarke. “Charges such as this warrant investigation,” Ms. Clarke said. No disciplinary action has been taken against the doctor, she added. “It’s too soon to be at that stage, given that (he) has just been charged.” Prior to any action being taken, an investigation must be com- pleted and the case referred to the college’s disciplinary com- mittee, Ms. Clarke said. The criminal investigation continues and police want to ensure there are no other vic- tims. The young woman who accused Craig Wright of sexual assault gave varying versions of events, and had no reasonable expla- nation for the apparent discrep- ancies, Superior Court Justice Hugh O’Connell said in making his ruling Thursday in Oshawa. “I am troubled by her evidence to the degree it affects her cred- ibility,” Justice O’Connell said. “I reject (the woman’s) evidence she did not consent. “I believe indeed she did con- sent,” the judge added. Justice O’Connell said that even if there had been proof the woman didn’t consent to a sexu- al encounter at Mr. Wright’s Ajax home in early 2010, it hadn’t been proven Mr. Wright was aware of the young woman’s unwilling- ness to accept his advances. “I am satisfied Mr. Wright would have believed (she) was consenting,” the judge said. During a three-day trial last week, Justice O’Connell heard that Mr. Wright and the woman, now 20, became close when she worked at his home-based busi- ness, exchanging e-mails that became increasingly personal and flirtatious. Feb. 17, 2010, was her second- last day of work for Mr. Wright before she left for what was to be a six-month trip to England. She testified that on that day they went out for lunch and then watched a movie at Mr. Wright’s house, after which he asked for a hug, then a kiss. The woman, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, testified she was bewildered and frightened as the encounter intensified, saying she did not co-operate and would not look at Mr. Wright as he took off her pants and attempted to have sex with her. She said she didn’t pro- test or try to escape because she was frightened. Mr. Wright, 43, did not testify or call evidence. After the verdict he wiped away tears. Thursday’s acquittal is not the end of Mr. Wright’s legal issues, however. In an unrelated case, Mr. Wright was charged with sever- al counts of cruelty to animals last May after a police raid on his FACW K9 Training Centre. The raid was prompted after numerous complaints of dogs that had either gone missing or died after attending FACW. A trial on those charges is scheduled for June. The suspect, a Markham man, was charged Mon- day with break- ins at 18 optome- try stores in Durham and York regions as well as Toronto, Durham police said. Durham officers launched their investigation after a May 28, 2011 break-in at an optome- try shop in the vicinity of Kings- ton and Whites roads. A man whose image was caught on security cameras broke through the front door of the shop and fled with a quan- tity of designer eyewear. Evidence collected at the scene was sent to the nation- al DNA data bank in hopes of a match. While investigators awaited results, they learned of a spate of similar break-ins throughout the GTA. In September 2011, the DNA collected by Durham cops helped identify a suspect. The investigation con- tinued and on Jan. 9 cops charged a Markham man. Chamil Nou- vakhov, 35, of South Park Road, Markham, faces multiple counts of break and enter, theft, and breach of recog- nizance. He was also charged with possession of a flick knife, a prohibited weapon. v DRIPLESS OIL SPRAY COMPLETE OIL SPRAY SUV, Mini Vans &Tr ucks From $95. The 7th Pickering Scouts will be at the Amberlea Presbyteri- an Church on Saturday, Jan. 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect bottles and e-waste, including televisions, computer monitors and all electronic equipment. Residents can also bring in car batteries, pop cans and milk and bread tags for recycling. The collection is aimed at helping residents while also raising funds for the group and their Send a Scout to Camp Campaign, through a partner- ship with Target Recycling. “It’s amazing because people have stuff in their basement, old TVs and stuff and this is the perfect way to get rid of that,” said Al Harris, group com- missioner for 7th Pickering Scouts. “It helps send Scouts to camp, helps us with fundraising and helps to clean up the environ- ment because it’s all properly recycled.” The Scout group began col- lecting e-waste in September 2010 with the goal of collect- ing 10 tons by Christmas of that year. Since then they’ve col- lected more than 150 tons, well exceeding their expectations. Amberlea Presbyterian Church is at 1820 Whites Rd. © 2011 Feld Motor Sports, Inc. These days, you can’t read a newspaper or turn on the TV without coming across the latest threat to our well-being. We are bombarded by exaggerated and irrational messages that lead us to believe our safety is at risk. I am constantly being told that I need life insurance or the newest security systems to be safe in today’s dangerous society. We are being fed information that has been blown out of proportion, often regarding today’s hot topics such as global warming, terrorism, the economy, sexual orientation and, my favourite, the belief that the world will end on Dec. 21 of this year. Is it just me or is everyone in a constant state of para- noia? We are living in a culture of fear and it is a phenomenon of our time to be afraid of just about everything. I think it is important that we all become aware of the unneces- sary fears we have adopted to prevent them from controlling us as individuals and as a society. Victoria Glen Ajax trades Hudak apprenticeship plan is divisive To the editor: At election time, your paper had an edi- torial backing Tim Hudak and the Conser- vatives. One of the comments said that we should modernize the apprenticeship program. Then Mr. Hudak recently stated that he would hire 200,000 apprentices. That sounds great, doesn’t it? What Mr. Hudak and the Conservatives fail to mention publicly is that they want to break up (modernize) the trades. The trades would broken down to be task-spe- cific. For example, a sink installer would put in sinks only, a shower installer would put in showers only, a drain installer would install drains only, etc. All work done now by a licensed plumber. A wire install- er would install wire only, a light install- er would install lights only, etc. All work done by a licensed electrician. An elevator cable installer would install cable, an ele- vator motor installer would install motors, etc. All work done by a licensed elevator mechanic. The true goal is to pit one mid- dle-class person against another with the true intent of reducing wages for the mid- dle class. Jason Langan Oshawa Feedback Fifty is just a number To the editor: Re: ‘Musings about turning 50’, opinion column by Mike Johnston, durhamregion. com, Dec. 29, 2011. I just read Mike Johnston’s article and wanted to respond. When I turned 50 in April, 1988 I had to put my late fiance in hospital and put my birthday in the back- ground. But he didn’t. He got his sister to go to the gift shop at Princess Margaret Hospital to buy my a gift. He was unselfish to the end: May, 1988. Don’t worry about a number, Mike. Just go out and use some of those dance lessons with your wife. Mary Snow Oshawa representation A theory on ‘invisible’ MPs To the editor: Re: ‘No sign of our MP’, letter to the editor, durhamregion.com, Jan. 6, 2012. A letter writer last week asked the where- abouts of her MP, Chris Alexander. I’m in the Pickering/Scarborough East riding and our MP, Corneliu Chisu, is also invisible except for grey-coloured propaganda in my mail box and a calender, both of which end up in the blue box. Could it be the fear of speaking off script and angering the Harp- er regime that keeps them invisible? Steven Black Pickering & A Metroland Media Group Ltd. The decision comes a little more than a year after Durham Regional Council voted 20-5 in favour of seeking enabling legisla- tion from the Province to allow the reform. Since the Region’s inception in 1974, the chairman has been chosen by publicly elected Regional councillors. But as Durham has grown along with its member municipalities, so too has it matured and confronted ever more com- plex issues. An elected chairman would be more directly accountable to taxpayers in Durham, could seek specific mandates on electoral issues and take his or her place at Durham Region based on the will of vot- ers. Though the Province has opened the path towards direct election, there are still several local hurdles that must also be cleared. Under provisions of the Munici- pal Act, at least one public meeting must be held, and a bylaw passed to change the composition of council. From there, each member municipality in Durham would have to endorse the bylaw, then a triple majority would be required, meaning that Regional councillors must support the plan, along with majority support from five of Durham Region’s eight municipalities. Finally -- and most importantly -- the number of residents in supporting munic- ipalities must reflect the majority of resi- dents in the region for the reforms to take effect. To that end, if any of the years of debate and discussion on this vital issue are to result in change, it falls primarily to the most populous municipalities in Durham Region to determine the outcome and therefore requires their full and open par- ticipation. Furthermore, much debate must take place in Durham’s northern municipali- ties where support for directly electing the Regional chairman is nearly non-exis- tent among elected officials. We can only remind them that a majority of voters in Scugog and Uxbridge who cast referendum ballots on the question in the last munic- ipal election came out overwhelmingly in favour of direct election. This reform represents a huge step for Durham and sets the stage for a new politi- cal landscape in Durham, one in which the chairman is not an appointee, but an elect- ed head of government, chosen directly by the people he or she will serve. Much work must still be done in Durham to make it a reality. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ja n u a r y 1 3 , 2 0 1 2 8 AP A message from Durham Region Tourism KeRRi King When it’s cold outside and the snow is knee-deep, it can be challenging to motivate yourself and your family to go out for a walk. A fantastic way to get kids (and adults) focused on something besides the cold is to embark on beginner birdwatching. Durham Region contains so many different ecosys- tems that it is home to dozens and doz- ens of varieties of birds. Whether it is along the shores of Lake Ontario, Lake Scugog or Lake Simcoe, or in the many forests, wetlands and other areas, birds are everywhere no matter what season. Winter birdwatching is particularly rewarding. When so much of the rest of nature is dormant or has migrated elsewhere, it’s a relief to see those flickers of life in among the trees or skirting the edges of the shore. It’s also easier to spot them while the leaves are down. Birdwatching excursions for kids have a number of benefits -- the first is the exercise and fresh air. These trips also give them a better appreciation for nature and an understanding of biodiversity and the interconnectedness of weather, food types and migration patterns. The equipment needed is minimal: warm clothes, a notebook and pen, a birdbook to iden- tify the varieties you see and, ideally, a good pair of binoculars. Our family loves hiking in the Long Sault Conser- vation Area which is a great place to see and hear many different bird species. Nestled in the heart of the provincially significant Oak Ridges Moraine, Long Sault is the largest area owned and managed by the Central Lake Ontar- io Conserva- tion Authority, www.cloca.com. It has close to 400 hectares of mature forest, plan- tation, wetland and meadow. The area is considered an important core wildlife area because of the diver- sity and size of habitats it con- tains. Because it’s so big and diverse, you never know what you’re going to see when you’re there. Its web- site has a species sighting database. This interactive format is a great way to help your kids feel involved with nature conservation, as well as helping the conservation authori- ties stay on top of what’s out there any given month. If you spot what you think is an unusual variety of bird (or even insect or mammal) use this webpage to report it: http:// www.cloca.com/lwc/report.php. He was pleased with the news out of Queen’s Park but said the fight is far from over. “If the voters aren’t diligent and don’t make their desires known this may not pass,” he said. “This is truly one of those situations where active participation of the voter ... is going to be crucially important.” Durham’s northern municipalities -- Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock -- are expect- ed to be a major hurdle. Council members representing the rural areas have long expressed concern that an elected chairman would look to curry favour with the bulk of voters in south Dur- ham. Results of a 2010 referendum showed the majority of voters in all eight Durham municipalities are in favour of electing the chairman. Chairman Roger Anderson said council will likely deal with the issue in February.
