We’ve already said this is what we want, now we’ve got to wait longer. A crossing guard has already been hit by a car, and no one was held accountable. If someone gets hurt while we’re waiting, I’m going to hold council account- able.” Mr. Zullo addressed council previously in October regarding concerns with the lack of stop signs along Dellbrook Avenue and Major Oaks Road, a situation he said is creating danger for pedestrians trying to cross the street in between speeding vehicles. Although the cross- ing guard who was clipped, Nadine Vangelisti, escaped the encounter with bruising and soreness, Mr. Zullo worries that the next incident could be much more seri- ous. “We’ve told them as a community we need this taken care of,” Mr. Zullo said, noting speeding and safe crossing have been issues since he moved to the area 10 years ago. “I drive these streets every day and the fact of the matter is we need stop signs.” Councillor David Pickles put forward a motion requesting four new stop signs in the area in October. At the City’s executive committee meeting on Dec. 5, coun- cillors debated a staff report recommending three new stop signs at Major Oaks Road and Greenmount Street, Major Oaks and Duberry Drive and Dellbrook Avenue at Meriadoc Drive. While Coun. Pickles supported the recommendation, he was concerned that one location suggested in his motion, at Dellbrook and Denby, was passed over for a stop, since many children cross there on their way to St. Anthony Daniel school. “I do think this fourth site is going to continue to be an issue,” he said. Staff recommended signs be installed in April to allow for community consultation, which staff did not have time to complete before the report was due to come back to council. “I would recommend that last step be allowed and maybe the bylaw not be passed until we can come back and say we’ve consulted with the com- munity,” said Richard Holborn, head of engineering services for the City. “I don’t think it’s a good time of year to install new all- way stops because of road conditions, so if we’re able to come back in March and indicate results of consulta- tion and have signs installed in April I think that would be more appropriate.” A motion to defer the recommendation back to staff for consultation, put forward by Coun. Jennifer O’Connell, was passed by councillors. “How can we support this if we haven’t gone out to the community and haven’t got their feedback?” she said. “The whole point of consultation is to make sure these are the most appropriate locations for the community so I have serious concerns with approving anything, unless it’s just in principle, because essentially what we’re doing is approving something then going out letting the community know. That’s not consultation, that’s education.” While he was angry at the delay, Mr. Zullo noted that the rec- ommendations would be an improvement. “I think the fact that they excluded Denby and Dellbrook was an oversight, any way you look at it, it deserves a stop sign,” he said. city New stop signs delayed in Pickering sabRina byRnes / MetRolanD file photo PICKERING -- Crossing guard guided students across the street at the Major Oaks Road-Pepperwood Gate intersec- tion in this file photo. Don Arsenault Delaney Drive to get an all-way stop sign at Roberson Drive Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Following a final public meeting on the issue, Ajax council is sticking with a deci- sion not to build bike lanes on Delaney Drive, Magill Drive and Kerrison Drive. The three roads connect to each other and are often used by drivers as an alternative to Kingston Road, which can become congest- ed during rush hour. Initially the Town proposed construct- ing bike lanes along the corridor, which would have elimi- nated on-street park- ing, but the major- ity of residents who attended an April 28 public meeting opposed the idea. In July council sup- ported an alternate plan to keep the parking but add sharrows, which would mean painted markings of bicy- cles and chevrons on the road and cycling- related signs to educate drivers. Council directed staff to bring the new pro- posal to residents and another public meet- ing was held on Nov. 2 and it was attended by 10 people. “Based on the feedback that was received at the public open house, staff continues to rec- ommend bicycle lanes not be implemented on Delaney, Kerrison and Magill drive(s),” said senior transportation planner Ranjit Gill. Although the residents did not offer sup- port for the sharrows, they were happy their parking wouldn’t be lost, he said. “Once again it’s just implementing paint and signage,” he said. At the Dec. 5 community affairs and plan- ning committee meeting, councillors decid- ed to proceed with the sharrows, which will be added in 2012. Initially, councillors had budgeted $65,000 for bike lanes for the road and staff estimat- ed that the shar- rows will cost less, so there is enough money in the bud- get for the project. In November, councillors also voted to install a new all-way stop sign on Delaney and Rob- erson Drive after an impaired driver took out a hydro pole, two trees and a cable box in September. A similar accident occurred at the intersection five years ago and since the site of the accident is directly across the street from Eagle Ridge Public School, the decision was made to add the stop signs. Delaney between Elizabeth Street and Ravenscroft Road has also been designated a community safety zone where fines under the Highway Traffic Act are increased. town No Ajax bike lanes on Delaney, Magill and Kerrison drives Based on feedback that was received at the public open house, staff continues to recommend bicycle lanes not be implemented...Ranjit Gill, senior transportation planner. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • December 9, 20115 P Dental Care for Adults,Kids and Great Big Babies. •A Full Range of Dental Treatments - Bring the whole family. •Saturday &Evening Appointments - To serve you better. •Flexible Payment Options - Helping you get the treatment you want. •A Relaxing Atmosphere - Virtual vision glasses, stereo headphones to help ensure you have a pleasant visit. That means there’s a need for donations including non-perishable food items such as cereal, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, crackers, cookies, juice, formu- la and diapers, as well as new toys, games, crafts, basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, colouring books, and anything a child or teen would like to see under the tree Christ- mas morning. The effort is assisted by local businesses including Algoma Orchards of Clarington, which has been on board since the promo- tion began, Staff-Sgt. Franklin said. On Oct. 13 registration for the seniors’ snow removal program took place for those who live in their home all winter but were incapable of removing the snow. It was only available to the first 300 homes and this is a free service to City of Pickering residents. We are seniors and found there were people in line who went south for the winter and mentioned that it was one of the easiest ways of making it look like the house was occupied, and it’s free. If there are 75 people who go south, that means people go without the service who might really need it. If you know of anyone that registered for snow removal and goes south for the win- ter -- or any other destination -- you should contact the City of Pickering and advise them of the situation. Barry Axford Pickering education Keep to the rules regarding kilts To the editor: Re: ‘Kilts to remain in Catholic schools’ news, durhamregion.com, Nov. 29, 2011. I believe that the way kilts are worn these days by Catholic School girls (I have never seen any girl wear it to the knee where it should be worn) is inappropriate and therefore should be banned. According to the Denis O’Connor Stu- dent Handbook 2011-2012 the young ladies wearing these kilts are breaking the rules of the school on many different accounts. The Principal’s Message in the hand- book states that the students are to become “... contributing members of society while respecting and maintaining Christian Val- ues ...” One such Christian value is stated in 1 Timothy 2:9 which states that women should dress “modestly, with decency and propriety ...” This same value is listed in the student handbook under ‘school dress code’ that kilts need to be worn modest- ly. A kilt up to the thigh or mid-thigh has never been considered modest. Again, their code of dress is broken in the fact that on non-uniform days, it is stated in the student handbook that no mini skirts are allowed. Well, if they aren’t allowed on non-uniform days, I don’t think they are allowed on uniform days. If a person is attending a Catholic school and wears a uniform, they are a representa- tive of that school and its beliefs, regardless to whether or not they personally accept those beliefs. They should not give the school board a bad reputation with their actions, dress, or speech. If the Catholic school board is keeping the kilts, then they must follow through with the rules in their own handbook and take weeks, not years, to put it into prac- tice. A host of Christmas fundraising initia- tives, food and toy drives are underway in the days leading up to Dec. 25 in commu- nities around Durham Region. Everyone from individuals to families to private cor- porations and the public service is work- ing to bring the best of the season to fami- lies in the region who are in need. Residents can stuff a police cruiser or fill a bus in separate local campaigns to collect food and toys. They can purchase an ornament through a Home Instead Senior Care Initiative that contains a gift suggestion, and bring a little Yule warmth to a lonely senior. They can take a non- perishable food item to North End Bowl in Oshawa to help feed the hungry and receive a free game of bowling. In Claring- ton, library patrons can trade food items to eliminate late fees. And that’s not all. Several ongoing col- lection initiatives -- big box department stores, banks, small business owners and average residents -- have boxes set up at their various locations to accept food and toys. It all adds up to a collective, region-wide effort among the people who call Durham home, who work in its communities, and who are motivated to help the less fortu- nate. When you’re out in the next two weeks finishing up your Christmas shopping, or when you’re at your local grocer, perhaps picking up the ingredients for a sumptu- ous festive meal, we hope you’ll find room in your buggy for an extra toy, a gift certifi- cate for a teen whose family has fallen on hard times, or a nutritious meal to donate to a local food bank. If you have an extra few dollars, dona- tions will be cheerfully accepted at any of the ongoing fundraisers. Donations are already coming into the various drives; local residents can turn the steady flow to a torrent. In the end, thou- sands of pounds of food will be collected, mountains of toys built and stacks of gift certificates will make their way to deserv- ing recipients, but the measure of success is in the depth of participation. Please do what you can over the next two weeks to bring the best of the season to those who might otherwise have noth- ing. Regional Council on Dec. 14 will deal with a proposal to raise water and sewer rates by a combined 6.4 per cent in 2012. The increase is broken into an 8.3-per cent increase in water rates and 4.6 per cent for sanitary sewer rates. It works out to about $47 a year. A staff report noted water consumption has been dropping steadily since 2000, primarily because of water efficient fix- tures and appliances. “This decline in consumption more than offsets consumption increases relat- ed to growth. Reduced net consumption results in reduced user rate revenue, which must be recovered through user rate increases,” the report noted. And, consumers better get used to pay- ing more, as the Region is anticipating increases between seven and nine per cent a year until 2016. region Durham water, sewer rates to rise AJAX -- Ajax residents are being asked to log online and tell the Town about their local neighbourhood in an effort to create stronger communities through- out Ajax. Residents can fill out an online survey at townofajax. com until Dec. 28 and residents who don’t own a com- puter can use a public access computer at Town Hall or at one of the Town’s libraries. The survey is part of the consultation for the Town’s Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy. “We’re seeking input from residents on how they identify their neighbourhoods,” said Marilou Murray, manager of strategy, communications and policy for the Town of Ajax. “The survey will help us understand the unique features of the diverse neighbourhoods across Ajax, find the gaps and develop programs and services that meet the growing needs of our community.” The project is part of Ajax’s Community Safety Strat- egy and the Diversity and Community Engagement Plan. The ageless shock rocker, donned in a white doctor’s coat and red gloves, created the mon- ster at a diabolical machine before unleashing the creature during Feed My Frankenstein. Cooper at one point was seized by two robed and hooded execu- tioners, who led the struggling singer to a guillotine and chopped his head off. Beyond the theatrics, those who wanted to hear classic tunes from Cooper’s song catalogue weren’t disappointed. The band took the stage just after 9 p.m., a large curtain shielding the stage dropping dra- matically as, after a Vincent Price introduction, the band burst into The Black Widow. Cooper and his able band, including three guitar- ists, barely took a breath as they ripped through 10 songs, includ- ing Brutal Planet, I’m Eighteen, Under My Wheels, Billion Dollar Babies, No More Mr. Nice Guy, Hey Stoopid and Is it My Body. During Muscle of Love, what appeared to be a crazed fan appeared on stage snapping pictures of Cooper and his bandmates before the former drove him off. He would return later, pushing and messing with the band before Cooper finally skewered him. The pace finally slowed for the ballad Only Women Bleed, and the audience responded by wav- ing lighters and glow sticks. Coo- per picked up a life-sized, female doll and started dancing with it, kissing it passionately to close the tune. He kept the doll for the next song, Cold Ethyl, but wasn’t as gentle, spanking it and twice throwing the figure across the stage. He saved School’s Out for last, the song morphing into an audi- ence sing-a-long of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall. Cooper’s encore was Elected and he came out on stage waving a large Canadian flag and wear- ing an Oshawa Generals’ sweater with ‘Cooper’ on the back. While guitarist Steve Hunter did most of the solo work, each of the musicians had their time in the spotlight, including guitarist Ori- anthi, the first female member of the band, who Cooper described as “lovely but dangerous.” Nicole Meunier of Bowmanville, who won a pair of tickets to the show in Metroland Durham’s Alice Cooper contest, saw Cooper the last time he was here and said she likes the theatrics. “You grew up with him and he’s still rockin’,” she said just before the concert. Her companion, Jason Pain, noted that his first Cooper show was in 1970 in Toronto. Well, sort of: his mother was pregnant with him when she went to the con- cert. Phil Woodhouse, who lives in Uxbridge and works in Oshawa, saw Cooper for the first time with partner Tracey Irving. “I don’t really listen to Alice Cooper, but it was brilliant,” he said after the concert. “You don’t have to be a fan to enjoy it.” Woodhouse said he couldn’t pass up the chance to see Cooper and opening band Anvil. He and Irving described the concert as “awesome” and “amaz- ing.” “I hope he comes back,” Wood- house said.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • December 9, 201119 AP Mike Ruta Entertainment Editor mruta@durhamregion.com durhamregion.comEntertainment in conceRt Alice Cooper gets Durham under his wheels SabRina byRneS / MetRoland OSHAWA -- Above, Alice Cooper was literally on fire Wednesday night at the General Motors Centre, with light pouring from his hands during the opening song, The Black Widow. Broken Arts event a fundraiser for Pickering’s Cat Town Mike RuTA mruta@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- It’s a music mara- thon in Oshawa on Dec. 10. Broken Arts presents Broken Arts: Soundtracked 23 at Mad Cafe from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “This is the 23rd concert and it’s the longest we’ve ever done, six hours,” says Harley R. Pageot, founder of the arts collective. It’s BA’s second Christmas show, but the first where the acts are playing Christmas music. Pageot notes “very few of them have played Christmas shows” and they are learning holiday songs, with a couple of the bands writing some original music. The music ranges from pop to acoustic punk, with local artists Alley Kat and The Boozehounds, Bloody Boy Blue, The Cane Toads, Chris and Cassy, Darling Mead- ow, Katrina James, Nick Reynolds and How Sutherland performing. While there’s no admission charge, the day is a fundraiser for the Cat Town animal shelter in Pickering. “Because it’s Christmas, we want to do a Christmas show for charity,” Pageot says. “And all of us at BA are animal lovers. We chose (Cat Town) specifically because we have a relationship with them.” On Cat Town’s behalf, BA will be accepting donations of money, canned pet food, pet beds and similar items. Those attending can take part in the silent auction for a Christmas tree. Pageot says it’s a roughly seven-foot-tall artificial tree with lights and homemade ornaments. The winner will be announced at the end of the day. Mad Cafe is at 38 King St. E. Caggiula was drafted by the Erie Otters in the third round of the 2010 OHL priority selection. But he also received some expo- sure to what collegiate hockey played south of the border was all about. These days, the 17-year-old Stouffville Spirit forward is glad he learned of the hockey alterna- tive after verbally accepting a full scholarship offer from the Univer- sity of North Dakota. He intends to sign on the dotted line when the official spring signing period arrives in April. “It’s awesome,” Caggiula said. “Back when I played minor midg- et, it was all about the OHL and I was excited about it. “But I got exposed to some NCAA schools after some of my friends took that route and they informed me about it. I liked the lifestyle and figured I would give it a try.” Visiting the Grand Forks, N.D., school recently, Caggiula met with members of the hockey club and their coaching staff. It was there Caggiula was given the offer to accept the scholarship package, which can begin next fall or the year after. Caggiula hopes he can be ready to answer the call start- ing next fall. “My goal is to go in as a true freshman and I’ll work hard to be ready for next year,” he said. Entertaining offers from several other National Collegiate Athletic Association Division One schools, including Canisius College, the University of Maine, Michigan State and RPI, Caggiula revealed his first contact with North Dako- ta occurred in September when he began the season in the United States Hockey League as a mem- ber of the Des Moines (Iowa) Buc- caneers. “We had a USHL Fall Classic event and (North Dakota) saw me there and kept in contact with me when I was there and when I returned to Stouffville,” he recalled. Compiling three goals and 11 assists in eight games since returning to the Spirit this season after coming off a rookie cam- paign where he amassed 22 goals and 23 assists in 48 regular season tilts and a member of this year’s Canada East team that brought home the silver medal from the World Junior A Challenge, Cag- giula intends to major in business management and earn a minor in sports management. “When I first set foot on their campus it was an unbelievable feeling,” Caggiula said. “Their campus is nice and their coaching staff has plenty of experience and they’ve been successful.” The Fighting Sioux, who have won seven national champion- ships, play in the luxurious 11,500- seat Ralph Engelstad Arena, which hosted the 2005 world junior hockey championships. Alumni include Jonathan Toews (Chica- go), Zach Parise (New Jersey) and T.J. Oshie (St. Louis). Spirit head coach Craig Dono- van couldn’t be happier for one of his stars. “It’s a great accomplishment for Drake,” Donovan said. “Very few players are able to make the jump to college hockey at 17 years old. The fact Drake has been accepted to a perennial top-10 college pro- gram is a testament to his abili- ties as an all-round player. He is highly skilled, can play a physi- cal game and is responsible in his own zone. The Spirit organization are happy for him.” Caggiula now wants to focus on helping the Spirit make a long run in the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s postseason. “It’s nice to get (the scholarship offer) over with. Now I can focus on playing well in Stouffville,” he said. JiM MAsoN / MetrolANd STOUFFVILLE -- Pickering’s Drake Caggiula, who plays in the Ontario Junior Hockey League for the Stouffville Spirit, has verbally committed to attend North Dakota on a scholarship. soccer Inspiring comeback on the pitch for Bell-Davies Pickering resident returned from knee surgeries to play university soccer keN MAcleod newsroom@durhamregion.com SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA -- So far as comeback stories go, Cape Breton University women’s soc- cer player Allison Bell-Davies is writing an epic. The six-foot stopper -- a central defender who plays ahead of the back line in support of the mid- field -- was a longshot to even make the CBU squad this season after spending the past two years doggedly rehabbing two devas- tating ACL operations on her left knee and a third on her right. But not only did she make the final cut, but Capers coach Ness Timmons also put the Pickering resident in the starting lineup. “During the summer, I was debating playing soccer again,” said the fifth-year Caper on the school’s website. “It was a last- minute decision to try out for the team, so I decided to leave it all out on the field. “I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. It had been more than two years since I played competitively, so it was pretty crazy jumping right back into it.” Though she’s a confident and experienced player, she says going out to the Capers tryouts was an intimidating experi- ence, even with her teammates’ ungrudging support. “The team was pretty well picked,” she admits. “I felt con- fident, but I didn’t think I could make the starting team, but even sitting on the bench and sup- porting the team would have been great.” While she realizes she will probably never be the player she once was, Bell-Davies was happy with her play this season. “It’s frustrating at times, but I know my limitations. I just play around it and do my best. Every day is a blessing when I’m out there.” She says the mental side of the game was actually tougher than the physical aspect when she took the field for the first time this season. “My very first time playing, I had to go straight at a tackle. I had to get it out of my system. My first tackle of the season was what got me through it.” durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • December 9, 201123 AP If you did not receive your News Advertiser/flyers OR you are interested in a paper route call Circulation at 905-683-5117.Hours: Mon.-Fri.9 -6:30 Yo ur Carrier will be around to collect an optional delivery charge of $6.00 every three weeks. Boxing New champion resides at Pound for Pound Lisa ‘Bad news’ Brown wins WiBA Super- Bantamweight title TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO -- Lisa ‘Bad News’ Brown is the new WIBA Super-Bantamweight champion of the world. Brown (19-5-2, 5 KO), who trains at Pickering’s Pound for Pound under the tutelage of her husband Errol Brown and Rich- ard Lewis, headlined a card in Trinidad and Tobago with a dominating TKO over Colum- bian Angela Marciales (6-6-3 5 KO) at 1:26 of the fourth round. Marciales arrived in Trini- dad after the official weigh- in and tipped the scales at 132 lbs. Brown weighed in comfort- ably at 121.2 lbs. Showing great confidence in its fighter, Team Brown agreed to allow the extra weight which enabled the WIBA board of officials to sanction the title match. Marciales struggled with Brown’s power throughout the fight. In the end, Brown proved to be too much for Marciales, who took a standing eight count in the first round, and hit the canvas in the third. It was dur- ing the fourth round that the official mercifully called an end to the fight. This WIBA title is the first in a series of three fights aimed at regaining Brown’s WBA Title. Focus will then shift to winning the elusive WBC title. In other news from the club, the 2011 CASK K1 provincial championships were held in Burlington, where a small team of 10 returned with six provincial champion titles -- Tristan Kato (Jr. 40kg), twin brothers Tanner and Lucas Alward (Jr. 64kg and Jr. 60kg, respectively), Pat Reece (Sr. 63.5kg) Jayson Hinds (Sr. 67kg), and Matthew Kendall (Sr. 71kg). It was in a split-decision match that 51kg Jr. Ryan Hagan, who fought the current world champ, came out with the silver medal. After winning his first bout, Sr. 91kg Daye Kaba was unable to compete in the final and came up with silver in his division. Jordin Henwood, Sr. 75kg, dominated his opponent, whose corner was about to throw in the towel when Henwood’s adver- sary dropped, claiming a foul. Video later showed that the foul did not take place. Unfortunately, it was too late, but Henwood walked away with silver. Philip Martiniello, Sr. 81kg took home bronze for his weight class. The total medal sweep placed Pound for Pound at the top. They were given the Most Competi- tive Team Award. Lucas Alward captured Best Jr. Fighter Award. Lewis says, “Pound for Pound has had a really big November and plan to send an MMA team to the USA in December. Heck, we’ve had a really big year.” SuBmitted photo TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO -- Lisa Brown, who trains at Pickering’s Pound for Pound under the guidance of Richard Lewis, left, and her husband Errol, won the WIBA Super-Bantamweight belt with a fourth-round TKO over Columbian Angela Marciales. Whether that special person in your life is a fan of a particular artist or just has space on their wall that’s just waiting for the perfect print, art is a very personal and thoughtful gift. At Classic Arrangements Art Gallery, owner Dereck Gulab and his friendly, knowledgeable staff can help you find the perfect piece for that hard to buy for person on your list. You can also choose to treat yourself! “We would like to wish everyone a very blessed Christmas,” says owner Dereck Gulab. “We hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. We thank God for your continued support and we most certainly appreciate your business. Thank you for allowing us to serve you. Just remember Jesus is the reason for the season.” This past November, Classic Arrangements Art Gallery celebrated their 22nd anniversary. For over two decades, the gallery has been helping clients find limited edition prints and providing custom framing. Classic Arrangements offers limited edition prints from artists such as Trisha Romance, Robert Bateman, Thomas Kinkade, Pino and James Lumber. There is a great selection of artwork in stock, and Dereck is happy to source and bring in any pieces you may be looking for. Until December 31st, customers can save 25 to 50% off all framed artwork in store, including Trishia Romance! In addition to limited edition prints, Classic Arrangements also provides custom framing services. All of their frames are made from either solid wood or solid metal - you won’t find any plastic here! There is a huge selection of styles and shades to choose from and you can have anything you want framed: from paintings and prints to photographs and hockey or baseball jerseys. Framing can be completed in two to five days. “Many store offer deep discounts on their framing, but even with those sales, my customers always find that our regular prices are better,” says Dereck. Dereck is excited to announce that he will be expanding Classic Arrangements with two or three more galleries that will focus on custom framing. “We are currently looking for new locations and we hope to be open very soon,” says Dereck. “With the new galleries, we will be able to serve our clients better.” Classic Arrangements Art Gallery is located at 250 Bayly Street West (in the Mackenzie plaza near Dairy Queen) in Ajax. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or by appointment. For more information, please call (905) 427-1663 or email dereck. gulab@yahoo.ca.
