FUNDING SOLUTION SOUGHT FOR NEW CITY FACILITY
MOYA DILLON
mdillon@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- With a severe lack of space
discouraging new members, and prevent-
ing existing members from enjoying activ-
ities, the South Pickering Seniors Club is
asking for help.
Dave Simpson, president of the South
Pickering Seniors, says the organization’s
existing seniors’ centre, located at the East
Shore Community Centre on Liverpool
Road, is insufficient for a group that now
boasts more than 800 members and which
he estimates could have more than 1,200
within five years.
“We are cramped both for facilities and
parking,” Mr. Simpson said, noting that
the City is addressing the parking situation
caused by the removal of 30 spots for a new
lawn bowling green.
“We’ve lost a number of members
because they come and can’t get a spot,”
he explained, noting there are other limita-
tions as well.
JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND
PICKERING -- Dave Simpson says that the seniors’ club has outgrown its facility at the East Shore Community Centre and has brought to
council the need for a new seniors’ centre.

Idea for land trust
put forth by
several organizations
Moya DIllon
mdillon@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Residents and organizations are
biding their time discussing wish lists for the
Pickering federal lands as they await the results of
a new land-use study.
Residents crowded into the Claremont Commu-
nity Centre for a session on Nov. 20 titled ‘Forty
Years Later: How Should the Pickering Lands be
Used?’
Representatives from Land Over Landings,
Green Durham Association, Claremont District
Residents Association and the Rouge Park Alli-
ance were invited to share their views on the fed-
eral lands with Ajax-Pickering MP Chris Alexan-
der.
Brian Buckles, vice-president of Green Durham,
suggested that a compromise may be in order.
“I’d love to see government commit now to a
land use that protects all these lands in perpetu-
ity from an airport or urban sprawl, however that’s
not going to happen so I’d like to focus on land-
use possibilities that fulfill as much of that dream
as possible,” he explained.
Mr. Buckle noted that even if the possibility of
an airport is kept alive, the government would not
need the entire 18,600 acres that constitute the
federal lands, which leaves the possibility of pro-
tecting a good portion of the lands.
“The airport, if it happens, is a long way off and
they shouldn’t be doing anything in the planning
now that assumes there’s going to be an airport,”
Mr. Buckles said, citing the results of a needs
assessment study released in July that had airport
contingencies scheduled as late as 2037.
“In the meantime they should focus on environ-
mental, agricultural and community objectives. I
think that makes sense even if you are an airport
proponent, since they wouldn’t want development
on these lands either. We are very much commit-
ted to preserving and enhancing these lands and
I think the community is very much in favour of
that.”
Mr. Buckles and other proponents of protecting
the federal lands referred to a mention of commu-
nity consultation in the July report as their next
focus.
Residents are hopeful that consultations will
allow them the opportunity to have their voices
heard.
Mary Delaney, a Claremont resident and found-
ing member of Land Over Landings, echoed the
wish for the lands to be protected in perpetuity
through the creation of a land trust.
“I think we have the opportunity to lead the
world here or be the laughingstock of the world,”
she said of the lands.
“We owe it to the future, to our children and
grandchildren, to save what remains of this land.
We can not waste it.”
Ms. Delaney said she felt the meeting was very
positive in that it demonstrated there is a united
front regarding the lands.
“There was certainly a sense of singing to the
choir but it’s good to know that it’s a big choir,” she
said.
“I think there was a unified vision and belief and
a sense that we need to be prepared to continue
this fight. And that doesn’t just include meetings
but be prepared to give whatever we can in terms
lanD-use stuDy
Community airs desires for airport lands in Pickering
of knowledge, time and energies.”
Although the meeting left her optimistic that community
input will indeed be heeded, Ms. Delaney called the ongo-
ing demolitions of homes located on the federal lands in
Brougham a haunting backdrop.
“All this is couched by the extreme depression and sad-
ness of the fall of Brougham, which is sort of echoing in
the background,” she explained.
“I feel cautiously optimistic, then I drive by and all you
see is desolation. Brougham should never have been
expropriated, it should be a thriving community. But it
has to remind us that the land is still here and there may
be an opportunity to rebuild within the community.”
MP Chris Alexander could not be reached for comment.

DURHAM -- An item of clothing
that’s long been a part of Durham’s
Catholic high schools might soon
be ‘so last season’.
The Durham Catholic District
School Board will discuss the pos-
sibility of banning kilts at a meet-
ing on Nov. 28.
At the last board meeting, Whitby
Trustee Chris Leahy and Oshawa
Trustee Stan Karwowski gave
notice that they will bring forward
a motion to eliminate kilts as part
of the uniform at all of the board’s
high schools.
“There’s some challenges with
the kilts really,” said Trustee Leahy
in an interview.
He said he’s received some com-
plaints -- mostly on the recent
election campaign trail -- from the
public about how short many of
the girls wear their kilts, and school
staff also have a hard time enforc-
ing uniform rules.
He pointed out that some schools
in Toronto and Halton have banned
the kilts already.
Grade 9 Archbishop Denis
O’Connor Catholic High School
students Rachel Smith and Kaitlyn
Tidd said they were surprised to
learn of the possible ban, but Kait-
lyn has heard of other schools out-
side of Durham that have already
done so.
“We’d actually be dressing the
same all the time,” said Rachel.
Rachel’s kilt -- a hand-me-down
from her sister -- is hemmed to
about mid-thigh, and Rachel rolls
her kilt up until it reaches about
the same length.
“I like my kilt,” Kaitlyn said. “I
hate the pants. I wore my pants
once. I wear my kilt every day.”
Rachel tends to mix up the kilt
and pants, and she likes having the
option.
“I like the kilt,” she said. “I think
if they ban the kilt a lot of people
would be mad.”
But she said if the kilt is banned,
she hopes the board consid-
ers having more female-friendly
shorts available; right now, shorts
are unisex.
“They should make girl shorts if
they ban the kilt,” she said.
Kaitlyn said she’s asked the boys
what they think, and they’d prefer
the girls wear the kilts. The teach-
ers, on the other hand, would rath-
er the kilts be banned.
Kaitlyn’s mother Tara Tidd said
although she finds a lot of kilts are
inappropriately short, she’s still
a fan of the item of clothing. She
finds them a staple of the Catholic
uniform and remembers wearing
one when she went to high school.
“The option’s good,” she said.
She added something she’s
noticed at Denis O’Connor is girls
wearing socks and shoes that are
not part of the uniform.
Trustee Leahy said the board has
been consulting Durham parents
on the issue to help trustees make
an informed decision.
“We want to have it as a commu-
nity decision, not just something
that’s decided at the board,” he
said.
If the board goes forward with
the ban, trustees will decide how to
eliminate the kilts. Options include
phasing them out starting with the
upcoming Grade 9 class, or elimi-
nating them with one year of tran-
sition.

MRI campaign could
have used that $75,000
To the editor:
Re: Image is Everything campaign to raise
funds for an MRI at Rouge Valley Health
System’s Ajax and Pickering hospital.
Volunteers embraced and committed to
this campaign. Schools raised funds for it.
Galas and golf tournaments were held with
proceeds donated to the campaign. Tax-
payers contributed their share.
The whole of Durham Region came
together unanimously to support our hos-
pital and the cause behind this badly need-
ed equipment.
Can you imagine the difference one con-
tribution of $75,000 would have made to
this campaign, and how it would have pro-
vided a benefit to everyone in Durham
Region?
If image is everything, then a small num-
ber of our elected officials should take a
long, hard look at themselves and apolo-
gize profusely to the citizens who elected
them for their costly and grotesque lack
of judgment with their $75,000 incinerator
groundbreaking party.
John Morson
Pickering
animal riGhts
The question is:
can they suffer?
To the editor:
Animal rights in Canada and the United
States is an ongoing topic which is hidden
in the shadows, never to be talked about.
The rights of animals have been, in many
ways, forgotten about and put aside to
worry about the rights of humans. What
many people tend to forget is that humans
and animals are both living creatures and
can both feel pain, experience loneli-
ness and suffer from starvation. Whether
humans take away the rights of animals by
experimenting on them in scientific labs,
use their bodies for meat, hunt them for
sport or use their skin and fur for clothing,
although it can all be done legally, it is still
viewed as animal cruelty.
Cruelty of animals may be hidden in the
shadows and only discovered by those
willing to look for it but the reality is that
by turning a blind eye to animal cruelty,
we humans are simply forgetting that these
animals have the right to live here on this
earth alongside us and are not here for us
to benefit or get satisfaction from.
The next time you go to the store and pur-
chase the fur coat of your dreams, consider
how many animals had to suffer simply for
you to be warm and wear the newest fash-
ions.
The question is not, “Can they reason?”
nor, “Can they talk?” but rather, “Can they
suffer?”

A true show of
respect for veteran
To the editor:
On Remembrance Day, a colleague of
mine popped over to the Tim Horton’s at
Harmony and Taunton roads around the
noon hour.
When he returned to work he had an
amazing story to share. While he was wait-
ing for his order, an elderly gentleman
entered the restaurant accompanied by his
daughter. The elderly man was obviously a
war veteran with the abundance of medals
proudly displayed on his blue blazer.
What happened next was quite remark-
able: every single patron in the crowded
Tim Horton’s stood in silence as the war
vet made his way to the counter.
Now that’s an act of random respectful-
ness. Way to go Oshawa!

Pickering student’s peace efforts an inspiration
Often, we don’t see our country or our
community as it really is and fail to appre-
ciate it until someone moves here from
another land and views it with a fresh set
of eyes.
And when they do, and tell us what
they’re seeing, it can be a revelation, even
an inspiration.
Because while familiarity can breed
contempt, it can also breed complacency
and a lack of appreciation.
This comes to mind when considering
Pickering student Atiyya Bacchus, who
is being recognized for her efforts in the
community with a YMCA Peace Medal-
lion Award.
The 15 year old grew up in Guyana and
told us about the poverty she saw and the
impossibility of improving one’s life. It’s a
bleak picture, especially when we consid-
er young people there.
When Atiyya came to Pickering, she was
struck by the resources available in Cana-
da. But instead of just thinking of herself
and taking advantage of what was here,
Atiyya was motivated to get engaged and
help others. And in doing so, she’s an
example to us all, reminding us that we
have it so good compared to most in the
world.
But that doesn’t mean we should be self-
satisfied, because helping others with our
talents and skills is about the best thing
we can do.
“Here people are encouraged to vol-
unteer, but in Guyana that doesn’t hap-
pen because they don’t have the resourc-
es. Here I have so many resources at my
fingertips. I can access so much and that
means there’s so much I can do.”
And she is doing so much. Atiyya vol-
unteers with the Women’s Multicultur-
al Resource and Counselling Centre on a
Youth Connections program, helping new
Canadian youth settle into their adopted
country.
She is a member of the YMCA’s Youth
Leadership Corps, which fosters leader-
ship and community engagement. She
volunteers at a Pickering library reading
program.
In her spare time she fundraises for the
Heart and Stroke Foundation and to build
a well in Sierra Leone. And she does still
more.
Atiyya is a most worthy recipient of the
YMCA Peace Medallion Award and we
salute her.
We thank her for reminding us that we
are extremely fortunate to live in Pickering,
and for her work making Pickering, Dur-
ham and Canada an even better place.

“In the winter we have monthly dances and
we’re only allowed to have 120 people. The
last three or four events have sold out within
a day, so there’s always people who are get-
ting left out. On Tuesdays and Thursdays,
which are our busiest days, we have over 120
people here and it’s a matter of whether they
carpool or not if we can get any more in.”
The seniors also welcome a plan to build
new bathrooms in the summer since the
current three-stall women’s room results
in daily lineups. The new washrooms are
included in the 2012 budget, which has
yet to be approved. Mr. Simpson estimates
the group would need about double the
square footage it has now to be comfortable,
although he acknowledges that otherwise
the facility has a lot to offer.
“I think we pretty well have everything we
need here, it’s just too small in scale,” he says
of the facility, where the organization offers
computer courses, bingo, card games, shuf-
fleboard, darts, crafts, badminton and more.
Mr. Simpson spoke to council about the
issue at a meeting on Nov. 21.
“We are in desperate need of more space,”
Mr. Simpson said to councillors.
“The last addition we put on our building
at East Shore was a new card room and that
was 11 years ago, when our membership
was 300. Now we’re at 800 so we’ve near-
ly tripled. With those numbers you can see
we’re in desperate need for a future home as
the population is graying and we will have
more and more seniors as the years prog-
ress.”
Councillor Doug Dickerson put for-
ward a motion requesting the City treasur-
er to review the possibility of setting aside
$150,000 annually in a reserve account to
fund a new seniors’ centre and asking staff
to work with the seniors on finding a site for
a possible new facility.
Council voted unanimously to approve the
motion. The move was greeted enthusiasti-
cally by Mr. Simpson and his fellow seniors,
who will also be contributing to the cause in
the form of new membership fees for hon-
ourary members. “
It’s our lifestyle,” he said of the seniors’
centre, which is open year-round Monday
through Saturday aside from a two-week
summer shutdown in July.
“It gives us something to do and both the
activities and the social aspects are great.
There are people here that suffer very much
when we close in the summer because it’s
their home, they’re here five days a week.”

PICKERING -- An investigation into
alleged breaches of employee guidelines
has resulted in the firing of 11 workers
at Ontario Power Generation’s Pickering
nuclear plant.
The company confirmed the dismissals
this week. While the nature of the infrac-
tions that led to the action isn’t being dis-
closed, an OPG spokesman said safety at
the plant was not compromised.
“This is not about fitness for duty or
anything to do with safety in the plant,”
OPG spokesman Ted Gruetzner said in an
e-mail. “It’s about a potential violation of
the code of conduct.
“The code covers a wide range of staff
behaviours,” Mr. Gruetzner added.
Workers were notified in early Novem-
ber that plant administration was inves-
tigating alleged breaches of the code,
which governs staff behaviour on matters
ranging from conflicts of interest, ethical
business practices and managing sensi-
tive information, as well as “citizenship”
issues.
“We are dealing with some human per-
formance issues relating to potential code
of conduct infractions,” senior vice-pres-
ident Glenn Jager wrote in a memo sent
to staff. “As nuclear professionals, I know
you understand that our business is built
on safety. Everything we do here is in the
safest manner possible,” the staff memo
said.
Mr. Gruetzner confirmed this week the
review had led to the dismissal of 11 work-
ers. He wouldn’t disclose their roles at the
plant, except to say most were in “support
functions”. OPG employs more than 5,000
workers in Durham Region, he said.
The Power Workers Union, which repre-
sents workers at OPG, did not respond to a
request for comment. OPG wouldn’t con-
firm if the affected workers are PWU mem-
bers, but Mr. Gruestzner said release of
details on the firings was limited because
of the workers’ collective agreement.
The affected workers were informed
they’d been fired last Friday.

AJAX-PICKERING -- An Ajax-Pickering
MPP with a long history of working with
local seniors will make seniors’ issues his
focus at Queen’s Park.
Joe Dickson has been named the parlia-
mentary assistant to the Ontario Seniors
Secretariat and will be working with
Ontario Labour Minister and Minister
Responsible for Seniors, Linda Jeffrey.
Following the creation of the Retire-
ment Homes Act in
2010, the first-ever
regulation for Ontar-
io retirement homes,
Mr. Dickson will be
working on the file as
the act is implement-
ed.
“I have a lot of expe-
rience with seniors.
First of all, I am a
senior and I love the challenge of put-
ting the regulation and implementation
together to provide a high level of protec-
tion for seniors,” said Mr. Dickson, who is
71.
Mr. Dickson is a veteran politician in
Ajax, having served on both local and
Regional councils. He was first elected to
the Ontario legislature in 2007 and previ-
ously served as the deputy whip for the
party in Queen’s Park.
In the past, he’s held meetings for
seniors in Ajax and Pickering in an effort
to connect residents with resources.
“I’ve found from the Ajax-Pickering
seniors’ seminars we held, there was so
much information available to seniors
but there was no direct pipeline to them,”
he said.
Mr. Dickson said he plans on working on
ways to better communicate with seniors
and always makes an effort to visit local
retirement and long-term care homes in
his riding.

A message from
Durham Tourism
Kerri King
December is just around the cor-
ner, and the first few snowflakes of
the season have started to fall. If
you’re like me, your family is itch-
ing to pick out the perfect holiday
tree. At Durham Farm Fresh farms,
you can cut your own tree, pick
from a pre-cut selection and also
take part in festive family fun on
the farm.
• At Prestonvale Tree farms in
Courtice, you and your family can
browse 64 acres of balsam fir, Fraser
fir and spruce trees. Cut your own
or pick one already pre-cut, and
enjoy the tasty refreshments avail-
able too. Make a day out of it and
start a holiday tradition your family
will always remember. Visit www.
prestonvaletreefarms.com.
• Nearby in Bowmanville, Pow-
ell’s Trees offers both cut-your-own
and pre-cut options. Trees up to
seven feet tall cost $25, while those
eight to 20 feet cost $35. Choose
from their selection of scotch and
white pine, spruce, balsam and
Fraser fir. The trees are carefully
sheared, very full and deep green.
Hot drinks, cookies, crafts, honey
and beeswax candles are also for
sale onsite. And once the snow
starts to fall, take advantage of their
25 acres of hilly landscape, great for
sledding and walking. Phone 905-
263-2762.
• In Port Perry, Spademan Tree
Farm sells more than 10 varieties of
holiday trees, all of which are 100-
per cent naturally grown without
the use of pesticides, herbicides or
any other chemicals. At this farm,
your family can harvest your own
tree from the one-acre Christmas
tree lot. And for every tree harvest-
ed, another is planted in its place.
Spademan’s is open daily from 8
a.m. to 5 p.m., until Dec. 25, and
also offers complimentary wagon
rides, hot apple cider, hot choco-
late and cookies. Visit www.spade-
mantreefarm.com.
• Knox’s Pumpkin Farm in
Hampton is inviting local families
to make holiday memories this
season. Enjoy fun winter activities,
including wagon and sleigh rides, a
live nativity, candy-cane hot choc-
olate, baked goods, carols around
the campfire and a bountiful bou-
tique. And that’s all before even
taking home your family’s tree. The
elves have been busy getting Knox’s
ready for the season, and Santa and
Mrs. Claus may even be stopping
by. Visit www.knoxpumpkinfarm.
com for more information.
• Pingle’s Farm Market, also in
Hampton, is your holiday decora-
tion destination. Fresh trees have
already arrived, along with fresh
garland, poinsettias and wreaths.
Choose from a wide selection
of trees hung and displayed in
the comfort of their greenhouse,
including the balsam fir, Fraser fir
and spruce varieties. Visit www.
pinglesfarmmarket.com.

Hockey
Coaches speak out on Panthers
Head coach
Mike Galati fired,
assistant coach
Brad Barton quit
Brad kelly
bkelly@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- The Pickering
Panthers have made a change
behind the bench, but the staff
that has been let go questions
whether anything will change
on the ice.
The consensus between fired
head coach Mike Galati, and
assistant coach Brad Barton,
who quit the team following
Sunday’s loss, is that as long as
owner Rob Stein is in charge,
things will remain status quo.
“I would love for the league
to step up and do something
about it,” said Barton on Thurs-
day of the current situation with
the team. “I don’t think (Stein)
should be able to run a junior
hockey team. This should be a
premier hockey league and with
him running it the way he is ...
it wouldn’t take you very long
to find 100 kids and 10 or 15
coaches that have been affected
by this.
“I’m not afraid to speak up
for something like this. To me,
it leaves me sick to my stom-
ach thinking how many kids
have been affected by this and
how many people are afraid to
speak.
“You can blame the coaches,
that’s fine. When you look at the
record of both Mike and I in the
past there was never any losing
involved. If you look at (Stein’s)
record, there’s been nothing
but losing. It’s pretty black and
white as far as I’m concerned on
that part.
“I think the OHA and the OJHL
has to step in here and do some-
thing to make this organization
not the laughing stock in the
way in which it is.”
Dan Cameron has been hired
as the new head coach and is
expected to be behind the bench
tonight when the Panthers host
the Whitby Fury. Lonnie Free-
man is the new GM.
The Panthers are in last place
in the South Division at 3-18-1
and have lost five in a row. Frus-
trated with the way things have
unfolded, Barton says the play-
ers got together and wrote Stein
a letter on Monday, outlining
the issues they had. Near the top
of the list was the fact that goal-
tender Adam Stein, the owner’s
son, was getting playing time.
Barton said that Adam quit the
team after the players sent the
letter to his dad.
The following day, Tuesday,
Galati was fired.
“I’d had enough,” said Barton
of his reason for stepping down
Sunday. “I told the kids that
basically we were told we had
to play Adam again. With me,
I made a pact with myself, that
morally, I didn’t feel right about
doing it.”
Galati, who brought many of
the players on this year’s ros-
ter with him to the team when
he was hired in the off-season,
sympathized with the players.
“For weeks there has been
an issue in net. The boys have
approached me on a few occa-
sions about the issue. My hands
were tied,” he said. “It’s a tough
place to coach. It’s a tough place
to be a GM. It’s a tough place to
do anything there.
“Our record isn’t the best, but
when you’re told who to play and
what to do, can you fault coach-
es? Can you fault Rob Tofolli as
GM? Can you really fault anyone
when you’re really not allowed
to do your job 100 per cent. The
record is the record and I do
understand that.”
Tofolli left the team earlier this
season after he was asked to take
on a lesser role with the hockey
club. Assistant coach Dan Sulli-
van had previously quit the team
as well.
Stein is in his third season as
part of the ownership group with
the Panthers, having owned the
Ajax Attack previously until the
two franchises amalgamated
before the 2010-2011 season.
Both Galati and Barton had
heard the stories about the Pan-
thers as a franchise through
their hockey connections, but
chose not to listen. The team
has finished in the basement of
its division the past four years.
“If I listened to everyone that
told me it’s a no-win situa-
tion, from friends, family, guys
I played with right to the people
at the snack bar, they warned
me,” said Galati. “But you’re
stubborn and you think you can
change things and make things
better. I guess we failed, some-
what.”
Barton wanted a return to the
glory years when he played for
the Panthers in 1987-88.
“I know what this team has
gone through in the past and I
heard a bunch of stories before I
came here. I decided that maybe
I could change things, but obvi-
ously as the year went on you’re
stuck between a rock and a hard
place.”
A call to Stein on Thursday
afternoon to comment on the
situation wasn’t returned. He did
comment earlier in the day about
the new coach, saying Cameron,
“is one of the most experienced
coaches in the league. He’s
something Pickering should be
happy about. He will definitely
take this team to a level it hasn’t
been at for years.”

team
PICKERING -- Canadian national
men’s sevens coach Geraint John has
named his roster for a tour of Dubai and
Port Elizabeth.
The 12-man squad is chock-full of
youth and experience.
“We’ve named a core group of
experienced players and some young-
sters who really have the potential to
develop,” John said. “The young guys
impressed greatly with their skills and
their ability to play the game.”
As part of the selection process,
and on top of annual develop camps,
John holds a selection camp a week
prior to each tour and last weekend’s
proved fruitful as several positions
were up for grabs with six of Canada’s
Pan American Games gold medalists
unavailable due to injury, professional
contracts or university studies.
Among the group named is Picker-
ing’s John Moonlight. He is one of five
members of the team who made strong
contributions to Canada’s efforts at the
Pan American Games in Guadalajara,
Mexico recently.
The Dubai and Port Elizabeth tour-
naments run on Dec. 2 to 3 and 9 to 10
respectively.
Moonlight is one of only four Ontar-
io natives to make the roster, joining
Kitchener’s Lukas Balkovec, Toronto’s
Lucas Hammond and Toronto’s Conor
McCann.
One team member hails from New-
foundland, while the rest of the roster is
made up of athletes from western Can-
ada.

Carvalho set to make UFC debut
ajax featherweight
to fight in Brazil early
in the new year
Mac Wilson
newsroom@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Local featherweight
fighter Antonio ‘Pato’ Carvalho
will be making his UFC debut
early 2012 and for those who fol-
low the sport and know his cre-
dentials, the feeling is that it’s
long overdue.
Hosting the UFC in August, Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil is preparing
for the return of the world’s pre-
mier MMA organization as UFC
142 is scheduled to take place on
Jan. 14. Since the previous show
was such an overwhelming suc-
cess, the UFC wasted little time
in booking its next event.
Carvalho will face Filipe
Arantes in Rio and while they
have nearly identical win-loss
records, Carvalho has been
fighting professionally for near-
ly 10 years and holds a signifi-
cant experience advantage that
will serve him well in the UFC.
As the Brazilian Arantes com-
peted mostly in local shows,
Carvalho, a native to Ajax, com-
muted great distances to seek
out the best featherweights in
the world.
Travelling as far as Japan, he
earned his place in the top-
ten featherweight rankings
and holds victories over Japa-
nese legends the likes of Rumi-
na Sato and Hatsu Hioki. After
three fights in Japan, Carvalho
decided to relocate closer to the
action.
“I made some money, packed
my bags and I flew to Japan,” he
said. “I didn’t know where I was
going to stay or what gym I was
going to train out of. I had no
idea what I was going to do.”
Even with no definite plans, he
was not totally alone.
“Lucky for me, I did know
some people from my time spent
there and they helped me to sort
of establish myself.”
During his time spent abroad,
along with some notable vic-
tories, Carvalho accumulated
a number of injuries, eventu-
ally ran low on funds and was
forced to take a much-needed
break. Returning home deplet-
ed both physically and mentally
from the day-to-day struggles in
Japan, he had no intentions of
returning to competition.
He was welcomed back by
long-time friend Justin Bruck-
mann of Bruckmann Martial
Arts in Oshawa, who introduced
Carvalho to martial arts years
before.
As Carvalho returned to
Bruckmann Martial Arts, he also
began working with Gordon
McPhail of McPhail’s Strength
and Conditioning Systems, and
his wife, Kim Tilden-McPhail,
who specializes in nutrition.
Having trouble filling the proper
dietary and conditioning needs
in Japan, Carvalho saw imme-
diate changes in his body and
ability to perform.
“With the proper diet, eating
the right things at the right time,
learning to peak out at the right
time with the different kinds
of conditioning that exist for
MMA, I went from 148 pounds
to 165 pounds of solid muscle,”
he said.
After feeling the benefits of his
new training regimen, Carval-
ho decided to return to the ring
and subsequently put togeth-
er a three-fight win streak that
caught the eye of MMA’s elite
promotion, the UFC.
A friendly and personable
demeanour, combined with his
incredible talent, make Antonio
Carvalho one of MMA’s most lik-
able competitors and while he
remains relatively unknown at
home, plenty of fans worldwide
will be tuning in to see Pato
return to the spotlight on the
world’s biggest stage.

OSHAWA -- Seven games in,
Oshawa Power coach Mark Strick-
land is starting to get a better han-

He’s figuring out what they can

improvement and what kind of
changes to the roster might need
to occur as the Power, with three
wins in its first seven games, move
forward this NBL Canada season.
While possible roster additions
loom, Strickland said the team is
getting better overall as it contin-

The sooner the players put

changes are made.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
Carvalho set to make UFC debut
Ajax featherweight
to fight in Brazil early
in the new year
MAC WILSON
newsroom@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Local featherweight
fighter Antonio ‘Pato’ Carvalho
will be making his UFC debut
early 2012 and for those who fol-
low the sport and know his cre-
dentials, the feeling is that it’s
long overdue.
Hosting the UFC in August, Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil is preparing
for the return of the world’s pre-
mier MMA organization as UFC
142 is scheduled to take place on
Jan. 14. Since the previous show
was such an overwhelming suc-
cess, the UFC wasted little time
in booking its next event.
Carvalho will face Filipe
Arantes in Rio and while they
have nearly identical win-loss
records, Carvalho has been
fighting professionally for near-
ly 10 years and holds a signifi-
cant experience advantage that
will serve him well in the UFC.
As the Brazilian Arantes com-
peted mostly in local shows,
Carvalho, a native to Ajax, com-
muted great distances to seek
out the best featherweights in
the world.
Travelling as far as Japan, he
earned his place in the top-
ten featherweight rankings
and holds victories over Japa-
nese legends the likes of Rumi-
na Sato and Hatsu Hioki. After
three fights in Japan, Carvalho
decided to relocate closer to the
action.
“I made some money, packed
my bags and I flew to Japan,” he
said. “I didn’t know where I was
going to stay or what gym I was
going to train out of. I had no
idea what I was going to do.”
Even with no definite plans, he
was not totally alone.
“Lucky for me, I did know
some people from my time spent
there and they helped me to sort
of establish myself.”

The Annandale ladies’
team of Sandra Thain with
Bonnie Klepadlo, Joan
O’Leary and Dianne Rose
won the main event final
of the annual Toronto and
District Ladies Bonspiel.
It ran Nov. 15-17 in
Toronto clubs with the final
at Leaside. They bested 32
entries in the open event.
The team had first pick of a
prize table which consist-
ed of assorted gifts, lug-
gage, blankets and such.
Annandale fared well as
Rhonda Welch, Janet Alex-
ander, Leslie Bainard and
April Risto wound up as
runners-up in the second
event final.
An Annandale junior
men’s team of Ben Bevan,
Tyler Sagan, Carter Adair,
Derreck Veitch and coach
Jennifer McGhee played
in the Port Perry men’s
event on the Nov. 19 week-
end. The team qualified
and lost the semi when a
last rock picked. The team
next represents Annandale
at the junior men’s zone
on Nov. 26 at the Uxbridge
and District Curling Club.
Two winning teams will
advance to the region-
al slated for Minden Dec.
3-4.
A new bantam boys’
team coached by Lesley
Pyne was runner-up at
the Whitby bantam cash
spiel on Saturday, Nov.
19. Skip is Matthew Hall,
vice Mitchell Vance, sec-
ond Charlie Sheehan and
lead Cody McGhee. They
are also competing in the
junior zones on the Nov.
26 weekend in Uxbridge. A
bantam girls’ team of Kait-
lin Jewer, Emma Becker,
Vanessa Aune and Alison
Gardener, and coached by
Susannah Moylan, is to
compete in the junior girls’
zone also in Uxbridge.
Another successful Little
Rock Bonspiel was held at
the club on Saturday, Nov.
19. The bonspiel was for
players aged 7 to 12. There
were 14 teams entered,
six were from Annandale
and each team played
two games of six ends. All
the competitors earned a
prize.
Next on the Annandale
calendar is the new Mixed
Doubles Classic Bonspiel.
It is to be held at the club
on Nov. 26. The organizers
have 22 teams entered and
need an even number of
teams, so a late entry could
not be accepted. The bon-
spiel features two-person
mixed teams playing six
rocks each for six ends.
Team Kean with Andrew
Clayton and Annandale’s
Tim March and Patrick
Janssen is to compete in
an Ontario Curling Tour
event, the Nissan Classic
in Brantford, scheduled for
Dec. 2-4. The team is then
entered in the OCA Ontar-
io men’s zone Dominion
Tankard slated for Sutton
on Dec. 10-12.

A leaking basement is frustrating and expensive – and it’s not
something you want to have to fix repeatedly. That’s why it’s best to
bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and
repair it right the first time.
Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has
been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to
15,000 homes in Durham region.
“I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imag-
ine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.”
Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative
and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his
troubleshooting ability.
“I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reason-
able cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve
excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weep-
ing tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.”
Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will.
“An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be
extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to
exterior landscaping,” he says.
Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He
says homeowners who invest in their foundations will save money in
the long term.
“Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it
escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.”
Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free pro-
fessional evaluation. For more information, call Gordon Crawford at
(905) 686-6880.

Cars for Sale BLAKE, RON
May 13, 1933 to November 28, 2006
It has been five years since you passed,
it seems like yesterday
I know you can still hear me so
there are some things I would like to say.
You always put the family first,
for yourself you did not care,
Your answer for gifts when asked
was always socks and underwear.
You were just a regular guy
like meat, potatoes and gravy
I really do miss your stories
of when you were in the Navy.
You taught me much growing up,
always to do the best job that I can
I learned about fishing, camping,
power tools and how to be a man.
It was so hard to watch you leave
but you are now in a better place
But I would give up everything
to hear your voice or see your face.
There is a place in a park,
a bench inscribed where I can sit
To laugh, cry, reminisce
and catch up with you a bit.
You were always there for all of us,
Dad you were the best
The bagpipes now are playing
so go you've earned your rest.
Forever in our hearts
- Chris, Tracy & Emily

bered and sadly missed by many relatives
