Santa Fund makes it merry for Pickering kids
VOLUNTEERS TO DELIVER CHRISTMAS BOXES TO AREA CHILDREN

AJAX -- Ajax and Pickering News Advertiser’s assistant ciruclation manager Jodi Raymond with gift boxes from the 2010 Santa Claus Fund.
The Santa Claus Fund, which distributes gifts to needy area families, is looking for donations for this year’s campaign.

AJAX -- Children in Ajax and Pickering will be
getting an early visit from St. Nick thanks to the
Santa Claus Fund.
The annual Toronto Star Santa Claus Fund,
now in its 105th year, is aiming to raise $1.6
million to provide 45,000 Christmas gift boxes
to children across the GTA, including more
than 600 to be delivered in Ajax and Pickering.
“Families that were affected by the recent
recession are still struggling to regain the life-
styles they led before; it’s very difficult to look
your child in the eye and feel powerless to not
be able to give them everything they may have
on their want list for Santa,” said Barb Mrozek,
director of Toronto Star Charities and Philan-
thropy.

PICKERING -- Police have made several
arrests in what they say was a simmering
feud sparked by a break-in at a Pickering
apartment last week.
Ten young man face a total of 24 crimi-
nal charges in the investigation. Several
young people were involved in one vio-
lent confrontation, and cops acting on
a tip arrived in time to prevent a second
clash, Durham police said.
Tensions were ignited by a break-in
Nov. 1 at a basement apartment on Era-
mosa Crescent, when seven youths were
seen carrying bags and knapsacks full of
stolen property, police said.
As police investigated the Eramo-
sa break-in, a group of young people
showed up at a residence on Swan Place,
looking to get the stolen property back.
Cops learned later in the evening there
was a violent confrontation at the Swan
Place home.
It’s alleged that after the gang seeking
justice left Swan Place, they returned to
Eramosa and armed themselves with
knives in anticipation of another fight.
A witness saw armed people in the area
and called police.
As cops arrived, suspects scattered
and two sustained bites when they were
tracked down by police dogs. As those
two were being treated for their wounds,
officers in the Air 1 helicopter tracked
down more suspects, police said.
As part of an ongoing investigation,
police executed a search at a Mead-
owview Avenue residence, seizing mari-
juana growing equipment but no plants.
Police say five separate incidents were
examined during the investigation,
which resulted in charges against 10
males, most of them aged 16 and 17.

Student, parents surprised
to see Mississippi town
had segregated proms
KriSten CaliS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Grade 9 student Janessa Shep-
herd was shocked to learn a town in Mis-
sissippi had separate proms for the black
and white students up until 2008.
The public was treated to a free screening
of ‘Prom Night in Mississippi’ on Nov. 1 at
J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate, and direc-
tor Paul Saltzman was on hand to present
the film and answer questions afterward.
The documentary takes place in Charles-
ton, Mississippi, a town with 2,100 people
and one high school. It’s also the home-
town of actor Morgan Freeman, who
offered to pay for the prom if the school
board and students could agree to throw
one prom for both black and white stu-
dents for the first time in its history.
J. Clarke principal Richard Kennelly said
students in Grades 11, 12 and a few class-
es in Grade 10 saw the film and also got
to talk to Mr. Saltzman during daytime
screenings.
“The way the kids opened up and talked
about what’s happening is fantastic,” he
said.
Janessa didn’t see the movie at school,
but brought her parents to the evening
screening.
“I was shocked because I knew racism
went on but I didn’t know it was that com-
mon for them,” she said afterward.
The student said she has friends of all
different races at J. Clarke.
Her father, Stephen Shepherd, appreci-
ated the discussion the film opened up.
He, for example, asked why some white
people feel uncomfortable with using the
term “black” when describing a black per-
son.
Most people said they didn’t want to
insult anyone by using the term “black”
and prefer to say “darker.” Others said
they simply thought to describe other fea-
tures of the person, such as their glasses or
height.
“We should walk through those uncom-
fortable feelings, we should share what we
think,” Mr. Shepherd said.
When one audience member asked what
was the point of bringing the film into the
school, the principal said it’s important
to open up discussion. He also spoke on
restorative practices that have been used
in the area of bullying recently, where it
forces the bully and the victim to sit down
and talk. Mr. Kennelly said this gives them
a rare opportunity to understand one
another, and the school has seen some
great results.
“It’s got to be a better way than just con-
sequences,” he said.
Mr. Saltzman said the whole idea of the
film, and having a forum afterward, is very
similar.
“When people talk, people will under-
stand,” he said. “Not talking about it
doesn’t help us, doesn’t move us forward.”
When the principal was asked if there
is racism at J. Clarke, Mr. Kennelly was
pleased to say there hasn’t been a school
fight for years between different races. He
does find that there is sometimes “self-seg-
regation” where different students of dif-
ferent races will often hang out together.
When asked if anything has changed
since the film was shot, the director said
that although there has been an integrat-
ed prom ever since, he’s learned from the
students that the mentality of the town is
pretty much the same. But he’s hopeful it
will change in the future.
“It’ll take time to play itself out,” he said.
Mr. Shepherd’s wife said she’d wanted to
see the film for some time.
“I’m really glad J. Clarke brought it in,”
said Dorette Shepherd.
Her husband agreed.
“They really are actively taking steps to
break barriers,” he said of the school.

Santa’s Magical Parade
of lights on Saturday
reKa SzeKely
rszekely@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- The downtown will be lit up with
the festive spirit as Santa’s Magical Parade of
Lights hits Ajax on Nov. 12.
The annual Santa Claus parade begins at 6
p.m. at Bayly Street and Mackenzie Avenue,
heading east until Harwood Avenue. On Har-
wood, the parade will head north in the south-
bound lane to Town Hall.
Ajax’s parade is unique in that it takes place
in the evening and officials are expecting up
to 10,000 people. “We sort of did our research
and decided that there was a great opportuni-
ty in the evening in terms of making the most
of Christmas lights,” said Lisa Warth, festivals
and events coordinator for the Town.
The parade will include The Righteously
Outrageously Twirling Corps performing to
White Christmas, the York Lions Steel Drum
Band and the new musical beaver train from
the Shrine Club.
There will be up to 60 floats in this year’s
parade, which will set out from parade head-
quarters at Ajax Mazda. There will also be
horses and live reindeer before the man of the
hour, Santa, closes out the parade.
After the parade wraps up, everyone’s invit-
ed to Heritage Square at roughly 7:15 p.m. for
the official tree-lighting ceremony and free
hot chocolate. As well, the library is hosting a
post-parade kids’ party with crafts and more
hot chocolate.

DURHAM -- An Ajax teacher
originally accused of trying to kill
his wife during a Caribbean vaca-
tion last year has had his charge
reduced, according to media
reports.
The Jamaica Observer reported
that an attempted murder charge
against Paul Martin was reduced as
his trial began Monday. Mr. Mar-
tin, 43, will stand trial on a charge
of wounding with intent to cause
grievous bodily harm, the paper
reported.
Court heard testimony from a
tearful Cathy-Lee Martin, who
testified at an earlier proceeding
her husband slashed her throat as
they drove in a remote area of the
island. The attack occurred as the
Martins were ending their vacation
last December, court has heard.
Ms. Martin testified she jumped
out of the car they were travelling
in and was rescued by a passing
motorist. Reports out of Jamaica
at the time of the incident said Mr.
Martin blamed the attack on a car-
jacker.
Since his arrest Mr. Martin has
remained in Jamaica; he was
released on bail in April. He taught
Grade 5 and 6 classes at St. Francis

DURHAM -- Sept. 16, 2011: It’s a day captured
forever in Durham Region’s history.
For 24 hours, journalists from Metroland
Media Group Ltd.’s Durham Region newspa-
pers fanned out across the region capturing
the images and stories of the people who live
and work in the community.
Our professional journalists were joined by
amateur shooters, your friends and neigh-
bours, who took part in our Night and Day
photo contest. Their winning images are part
of a special publication we have produced as
a tribute to our community.
Photographer Celia Klemenz captured the
first image of the day as cabbie Chris Eisen-
braun, illuminated by the glow of his com-
puter, awaited his first fare of the day in Port
Perry: it was 12 a.m.
Night and Day is the brainchild of Ron
Pietroniro, our manager of multi-media con-
tent, who envisioned a project our entire
team could contribute to while providing a
memorable reading and viewing experience
for our customers. Ron was there at 1:55 a.m.
when Charles and Lisa Williams welcomed
baby Ella into the world at Lakeridge Health
Oshawa.
At 3 a.m. the Fifth Wheel in Bowmanville is
a haven for long-distance truckers seeking
food, warmth and company. Photographer
Ryan Pfeiffer and reporter Jeff Mitchell were
there as the day began.
And so it unfolded, an hour at a time, a day
in the life of Durham Region.

A Night and Day look at Durham Region
TransiT
Get buses out of
residential areas
To the editor:
Re: ‘Durham looking at 2.35-per cent tax
increase’ news, durhamregion.com, Oct. 13,
2011.
I am a strong advocate of busing where
ridership can support the need. I believe
that buses should navigate along main
streets within the city in order to safely pick
up and drop off paying customers.
A week ago I read that Durham Region
taxes would be raised 2.35 per cent and
the main contributors to that were added
policing at five per cent and DRT at nine
per cent. I can support the need for polic-
ing and improving the safety of our streets
but I find the DRT officials irresponsible in
their request to add nine per cent to their
operating costs.
I live in north Oshawa. There are two
bus routes in Oshawa using my street as
a thoroughfare. The buses pass my house
every 15 minutes over an 18-hour period.
I attended two DRT meetings to ask for
someone to investigate the viability of the
buses in this area. The report I received
noted that there was an average 5.5 people
picked up over the 18 hours with Bus Route
405 (26 passes) and Route 407 (38 passes).
Sixty-four buses to pick up an average 5.5
people. That’s 64 buses travelling empty
through a residential street. At one of the
meetings a presenter was going through
2008 data and noted that DRT received 40
cents back for every dollar spent. That is a
losing proposition that is being paid for by
every resident in Durham Region.
DRT needs to be held accountable to all
taxpayers. Buses need to go back to travel-
ling main streets.
Get riders to make their way out to the
main streets to catch a bus. This is not
about supporting the need for Handi Tran-
sit or the like. These services should be free
for those people that require assistance.
But for those that are able, move the bus
stops out of neighbourhoods and back to
the main streets.

Oshawa
Occupy TOrOnTO
Looking for a job, or
looking for a good job?
To the editor:
Re: ‘Oshawa man has no plans to leave
Occupy Toronto’ news, durhamregion.com,
Nov. 2, 2011.
I’m not surprised Mr. Harris hasn’t
camped before.
Camping is something people do on hol-
idays, and holidays are something people
earn from working.
Unlike many of his tarp mates, Mr. Harris
seems to have come to camp with realistic
goals (i.e. attaining a small business degree
and opening a coffee shop).
He should be applauded for that. But
then the wheels fall off. He says he’s spent
the last four years “looking for a good job,”
then adds, “it’s been impossible to find a
job”.
Which is it? Impossible to find a good
job, or impossible to find a job?
If the latter, perhaps the kind folks who
donate the morning vittles to Camp Tar-
paulin could lead Mr. Harris back to their
coffee shop and start him along the road to
his dream.
Four years? ‘Help wanted’ signs appear in
Tim Horton’s windows so regularly they’ve
almost become a permanent fixture.
I was wondering how things would work
out for Mr. Harris as I turned the page, only
to read about Dan Shihata’s fight for his
life.
Mr. Shihata faces death at age 19 -- the
same age, incidentally, as Mr. Harris was
four years ago when he began his quest for
the good job.
Perhaps Dan Shihata’s story should have
been on the front page, perhaps raising
bone marrow awareness, perhaps saving a
life.

Striking a balance on municipal budgets in Durham
In preparation for detailed budget
debates early in the new year, Durham
Region municipal governments and staff
are busy crunching numbers as the year
end looms.
Preliminary municipal property tax rate
targets range from more than four per cent
(Oshawa) to 2.75 per cent in Ajax. Dur-
ham Region politicians have already land-
ed on a 2.35-per cent target for 2012. The
numbers could change slightly between
now and when the budgets are officially
struck.
In an uncertain economic climate, res-
idents across the region are concerned
that property tax hikes continue to out-
strip income improvements in Durham
households and in many instances have
let their municipal and regional political
representatives know they don’t want to
pay more.
Municipal governments, meanwhile,
must meet their fiscal obligations and bud-
get accordingly to maintain service levels,
manage debts, pay staff and see projects
through to completion. Indeed, the inher-
ent conflict between taxpayer expecta-
tions and municipal needs abides.
But in the clamour to call for low or even
zero-based municipal budgets, residents
must be careful of what they wish for. One
need only look to our big-city neighbour,
Toronto, and the turmoil that has been
created with Mayor Rob Ford’s efforts at
stopping the so-called gravy train. Librar-
ies, childcare service and other programs
and services face wholesale cuts. A labour
battle is percolating with City staff and the
millions upon millions in savings prom-
ised by the mayor -- without affecting ser-
vices -- simply haven’t materialized.
Durham Region residents have to decide
whether they are prepared to continue to
pay for the services they use -- excellent
and well-stocked library systems, state-of-
the-art community facilities, efficient and
well-run waste management and social
programs -- or risk the reduction or elimi-
nation of such municipal services.
Common ground can be found in the
middle of these competing narratives.
Municipal politicians, now more than
ever, must be vitally aware of the impact
of even incremental tax increases. They
must strike a balance between maintain-
ing service levels and meeting the expec-
tations of taxpayers.
Conversely, homeowners in municipali-
ties across Durham must recognize that
zero-based budgets are actually zero-sum
exercises: they simply defer more costly
increases.
Nobody’s calling for an end to the gravy
train in Durham’s municipalities. But find-
ing the proper balance between munici-
pal obligations and taxpayer limits is cru-
cial to the success of 2012 budget deliber-
ations.

“That’s why it’s so important for the
Santa Claus Fund to continue providing
relief for families during the holidays.
Every parent wants to make their child’s
dream come true.”
Jodi Raymond, assistant circulation
manager for the Ajax and Pickering

Claus Fund efforts in Durham and
has been volunteering for
the cause for several years.
“I can’t imagine not doing
it very year,” she said.
“It’s a really good expe-

together to deliver
the boxes. And when
you do deliver the
boxes it’s so exciting
to see how excited the kids get.
For some people it’s the only
present they’re going to get that
year, so it’s really nice to see their face.
It’s really just a great cause and a great
benefit to kids in Ajax and Pickering.”
All money raised goes towards the pur-
chase of items for gift boxes, as the Star
covers 100 per cent of the fund’s admin-
istration costs. In Ajax and Pickering,
more than $21,000 is needed to cover the
cost of more than 600 boxes, which will

through social services agencies and
community organizations.
“There is enough in the news indicat-
ing that many countries, including ours,
may face another recession in the com-
ing months,” Ms. Mrozek said.
“Families on limited incomes
are already hard-pressed to
make ends meet without
the strain of trying to pur-
chase holiday gifts. And
yet, we all know that
parents will find some-
thing they can do with-
out in order to provide
for their children.
Again, that’s where
the Santa Fund helps
out, to ease their burden and
reassure them that their children
will indeed receive a gift for the holi-
days.”

I Hate Hamlet running in Ajax
Play opens
at St. Francis Centre
Mike ruta
mruta@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Ajax Community Theatre
is starting its season at the new St.
Francis Centre and it’s appropri-
ate that Robert Notman stars in I
Hate Hamlet.
He’s new to Ajax himself, hav-
ing moved to the town around a
month ago.
Notman is Andrew Rally in the
Paul Rudnick dramatic comedy,
which opened Nov. 10.
“It’s really just about being
true to yourself and doing what
you think is right over what you
think is expected of you,” he says.
“Every character touches on
that.”
Rally is a young and success-
ful TV actor who moves from
Los Angeles to New York City
and finds himself out of work.
In “a last-ditch-effort” he signs
on for the role of Hamlet in a
Shakespeare-in-the-park run.
His apartment is haunted by the
ghost of its former resident, act-
ing legend John Barrymore, no
stranger to the role of Hamlet.
Rally is persuaded to stay in the
apartment and hold a seance,
but things go awry when Barry-
more’s ghost becomes trapped
there.
“It becomes kind of a teaching
thing where Barrymore decides
he’s going to teach Andrew the
ins and outs of playing Ham-
let,” Notman says. “They have
some different ideas on how to
approach the role.”
Rally is also dealing with a girl-
friend who loves Shakespeare but
has a different outlook on life.
“She’s a lot of fun, a really great
character, an ingenue in every
sense of the word,” he says.
When Rally’s Hollywood friend,
who gave him his first big break,
shows up to offer the actor a part
in a can’t-miss TV pilot, Rally is
torn: he can go back to L.A., to
the life he once knew where he
made a lot of money, or he can
do the far more creative and
challenging Shakespeare part to
please his girlfriend and prove to
himself that he’s more than just a
TV actor.
Also cast in I Hate Hamlet are
Christie Bartam of Whitby, Linda
Chapman of Courtice, Ray Por-
rill of Oshawa, Jonathan Aiken
of Ajax and Carmel Warmon of
Uxbridge.
The play runs to Nov. 19.
Notman grew up on a farm
outside of Port Perry and lived
in Oshawa before the move to
Ajax. He’s acted “from Uxbridge
to Oshawa and everywhere in
between.”
He’s living a long-held dream
right now, working in televi-
sion doing commercials and TV
shows.
“It’s kind of funny because I’ll
get a call from (my agent)... and
they’ll just be these two-second
phone calls, ‘hi, it’s me, can you
juggle?’,” he says. “Maybe I should
learn to ride a unicycle; maybe
I’ll get more work.”
The St. Francis Centre is at 78
Church St. S. in Ajax’s Pickering
Village.

tion, call the ACT box office at

Neville Clarke’s dilemma: making or teaching art?
Ajax artist Neville Clarke finds himself in
the dilemma of many artists who teach but
also wish to maintain an active and pro-
ductive fine art career: how do you find
time and energy for both?
Clarke teaches figure drawing and paint-
ing at Centennial College in Toronto as well
as adult figure drawing classes at the Var-
ley Art Gallery in Unionville. He has a well-
established career as a figure painter -- with
numerous awards, one-man shows and par-
ticipation in juried shows plus involvement
in various art societies. However, his artis-
tic output has seriously dried up over the
past five years because of the drain on his
physical and mental resources that full-time
teaching demands.
Clarke was born in Jamaica and immigrat-
ed to Canada in 1974 as a 14 year old, with
the family settling in Orillia. An art teach-
er recognized his drawing talent and urged
him to enrol in a painting class in which she
was an instructor at the local Georgian Col-
lege location.
After being voted artist of the year in high
school, he studied fine art at Sheridan Col-
lege for a year, then moved on to OCADU,
doing his fourth year at the Florence campus
and graduating with high honours.
He then launched into an award-and-
accolade-strewn career as a figure paint-
er. He showed his work regularly and sold
well and joined numerous art associations,
becoming, in fact, the president of the Cana-
dian Society of Painters in Watercolour --
and even travelled to England on their behalf
to make a presentation at Canada House,
where he met Prince Charles and was invit-
ed to his home to see his watercolours.
But Clarke’s career took a turn when he
was invited to join the faculty of the fine arts
department at Centennial College and he
threw himself into teaching. Over the years,
with the increased workload, he has had less
and less time for his creative pursuits.
But he feels he is on the verge of new paint-
ing initiatives -- maybe even boundary-
expanding, edgier (for him) breakthroughs
in his figurative work.
Check out the work of this hugely talent-
ed painter by Googling him, or find him at
www.robertsgallery.net.

Switzer
happy with
silver, but
wanted gold
Brad Kelly
bkelly@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Ainsley Switzer was fortunate enough
to win a medal at the Pan American Games, but
she isn’t celebrating the silver achievement, but
rather disappointed at not winning gold.
It’s a healthy mindset for the Ajax resident,
who has her sights set on representing Canada
at next year’s Olympic Games in London.
“Unfortunately for us, we were aiming for
gold,” she says of her team’s performance in
the epee event at the Pan Am Games in Mexi-
co. “We’ve had a lot of success against the other
countries in our area. The only one we have dif-
ficulty with is the States and that’s, of course,
who we lost to.
“Though I’m very happy to have come second
it was a little disappointing only because we
thought we had them this time and it was pretty
close.”
In addition to the silver in the team epee, the
33 year old finished fifth in the individual com-
petition of the same discipline. She was aiming
for top four which would have been a medal
position, as both athletes who lose in the semifi-
nals earn bronze.
“It was almost what I wanted,” she says. “I’ve
come fifth a number of times this year. It’s a
good position but it’s so close to what I am aim-
ing for which is top four. I keep seeming to fall
just short of that.”
Despite her personal disappointment, one
of her coaches at the Ajax Fencing Club, Bob
Weese, isn’t surprised by her success. He’s been
with her since she started fencing at Variety Vil-
lage at the age of 13, and the two coach together
now in Ajax when Switzer’s schedule permits.
“She works harder than anybody else,” he says
of what separates Switzer from the rest. “If you
look at a lot of people who are involved not just
in our sport, but any sport, they try to do it part-
time.
“If you look at the number of hours Ainsley
trains, it’s a 40-hour work week on top of every-
thing else she does. She’s in better shape now
than I’ve seen her in years.”
Qualifying for next year’s Olympics as a team
is going to be a tall order, but as an individu-
al, Switzer is just a couple of points back of the
national leader. To help close the gap, the part-
time elementary school teacher flew out to
Denmark on Thursday for a competition, with
another in Saskatoon to follow.
If Canada qualifies as a team, four athletes will
go, if not, just one will. The qualification process
will be ongoing until the end of March.

OSHAWA -- Karl Mueller of the St. Mary Monarchs cut in front of Donald A. Wilson’s Brandon
Hatzes to haul in a touchdown late in the second quarter of their LOSSA Tier 1 senior semi-
final at the Oshawa Civic Stadium. Wilson won the game 55-14, and also took the junior
game between the schools 62-12.

Pickering finishes
fourth at oFSaa girls’
championships
AJAX -- It wasn’t the end to the sea-
son that members of the Pickering High
School Trojans’ girls’ field hockey team
had hoped for.
The girls headed into last week’s
OFSAA championships with high hopes
of a medal. However, despite reaching
the bronze medal game, the team came
up empty in that regard, finishing fourth
at the event that featured the best school
teams from across the province.
Facing a tough Oakville Trafal-
gar squad in the third-place game, the
LOSSA champion Trojans ended up on
the wrong end of a 2-0 final.
That loss came on the heels of a
heartbreaking setback in the semifinals,
where Pickering gave what they had, but
couldn’t find the scoresheet in a 1-0 loss
to Sir John A. McDonald.
To reach the semifinals, Pickering
posted a 2-1 victory over Nepean in the
quarters, while also earning a solid 2-1
mark through round-robin play.
Pickering opened the tournament
with a 3-2 victory over Haliburton and
followed with a 2-0 triumph against
Brother Andre.
That left them with a match against
Oakville Trafalgar, where they fell by a
4-0 count to complete that portion of the
tournament.

NEWBERRY, SC -- For the first time
since 2009, the Newberry College wom-
en’s soccer team has seen a member
of its squad named to the Capital One/
CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team
as senior Meagan Heney was selected.
Heney, a biology major and psy-
chology minor from Ajax, will graduate
from Newberry in May 2012. The Denis
O’Connor graduate defender boasts
a 3.85 GPA and has earned academic
honours throughout her four years in
Newberry.
In 2009-10, Heney was a recipient
of the Division II Athletic Directors Asso-
ciation Academic Achievement Award
presented by WeatherPORT. Heney has
not only excelled in the classroom, but
has played a vital role for the Wolves,
seeing time primarily at defender and
forward.
Heney has netted two goals and tal-
lied four assists in her four years at New-
berry, with her most recent point coming
as she assisted a Newberry goal during
a 4-0 victory over Lincoln Memorial in
the 2011 Food Lion SAC quarter-finals.

Semeniuk leads Lords
BELLEVILLE -- Nothing positive came out of
the women’s volleyball team’s trip to Belleville
as they were dropped in a 3-0 sweep by the
Lancers.
Set scores in the match were 25-19, 25-18
and 25-28. The Lords could not find a way
to stop Kirsten Talsma who had 15 points,
including nine aces.
Durham was led by Natasha Jakovljevic of
Oshawa and Ajax’s Melissa Semeniuk, who
had five points apiece.
The Lords fall to 1-2 heading into next
week’s game against George Brown.
Durham’s lone win on the season came
against Fleming, a 3-1 decision over the
Knights.
On Saturday Nov. 5,
Annandale hosted the
popular Bantam/Junior
Bonspiel.
It included two eight-
end games, lunch, snacks
and prizes for all. Sixteen
teams were scheduled in
the event, and five of them
represented Annandale.
A total of 64 curlers par-
ticipated in this competi-
tive bonspiel. The winners
were the Team Anderson
rink out of the Galt Curl-
ing Club, and second place
went to the Sayliss Rink
from St. Catharine’s, just a
quarter point behind.
At the London Junior
Cash Spiel Oct. 28-30,
Team Bevan lost the main
event final with a score of
7-6 to Team McWilliam
from Scotland. Team mem-
bers were Ben Bevan, Tyler
Sagan, Carter Adair and
Derreck Veitch. They next
play in Kitchener-Waterloo
this weekend and the Port
Perry men’s event on the
Nov. 19 weekend before
representing Annandale
at the junior men’s zone
on Nov. 26 at the Uxbridge
and District Curling Club.
An Annandale team won
the Durham Region Senior
Winter Games bonspiel at
Whitby Nov. 5. The team
members were Dale Pat-
terson, Ron Zuber, Jim
Barrett and Bob Delaney.
The events are organized
by the Durham Region
Senior Games committee
and are open to all Dur-
ham Region residents who
are 55+ years of age as of
Dec. 31, 2011.
The new Annandale
Mixed Doubles Classic
Bonspiel is to be held at
the club on Nov. 26. They
now have 22 teams entered
with the organizers hop-
ing for more. The bonspiel
features two-person mixed
teams. At $100 per team,
lunch and dinner are pro-
vided.
Team Mark Kean with
Andrew Clayton and
Annandale’s Tim March
and Patrick Janssen were
in the Grey Power World
Cup of Curling in Sault Ste
Marie, running Nov. 2-6.
Competition was tough.
They had to play the Jeff
Stoughton world cham-
pion team, Ontario cham-
pions Glenn Howard and
three other teams. They
took Stoughton to an extra
end, but ended the event
0-5, out of the champion-
ship round.
Next, Team Kean is com-
peting in an Ontario Curl-
ing Tour event, the Nissan
Classic in Brantford sched-
uled for Dec. 2-4 followed
by the OCA Ontario men’s

road in search of competition
PICKERING -- The Ajax-
Pickering Dolphins atoms
and peewee teams made it to
the COMFL semifinals, but
were defeated by the Niagara
Generals.
The Dolphins atoms, led
by their star running back
Darius Brown and QB Riley
McBride, demonstrated why
they deserved to be in the
AAA semifinals.
There were some great
offensive plays, backed by
some great defensive moves.
Dasani McIntosh duked
and jived during his many
attempts to get across the
Niagara Generals end zone.
There were some big defen-
sive plays from Izzy O’Brien,
Aamarii Notice, Shaeden
Currie, Myles Hylton, Aidan
Simpson, Malik Williams
and Aaron Armitage. The
30-0 final score does not
truly reflect the performance
of the young Dolphins team.
The Dolphins peewee
OMFL championship team
also went to battle with the
Niagara Generals.
The Dolphins wasted no
time in unleashing their
attack. At the end of the
half the game was score-
less. Leading the way was
the defence. Quintyn Petti-
ford forced a fumble recov-
ery and provided some big
tackles. Christopher Sabat,
Nicolas Dosen, Cameron
Tabatabaei, Rasheed Tuck-
er, Brandon Romain, Jaiden
Cruz, Kenneth Soutter, Tyrell
Chung, Shandy Noel, Zach-
ary Munro and Shiomare
Peters all executed some
game-changing tackles.
On offence there were
some great runs from Craig
Gonsalves, who would rush
in the Dolphins only touch-
down. Other great runs
came from Bailey Grimes,
Jordan Wright, Tyus Hibbert
and Traevon Grant. Quar-
terbacks King Josiah Ambers
and Malachi Morrison com-
bined for some great passes,
while kicker Stephen Sulli-
van was right on target, add-
ing the extra points from
the convert. This was a total
team effort with contribu-
tion from all players. Unfor-
tunately, the Niagara Gener-
als were able to steal a 27-10
win from the Dolphins.
The Dolphins are conduct-
ing a training and orientation
program Nov. 13 at Dunbar-
ton High School. This pro-
gram is free to all 2011 regis-
tered Dolphins players and
will run from Nov. 13 to Feb.
5 with a break during Christ-
mas. Any new players wish-
ing to participate in this pro-
gram will be required to pay
a registration and insurance
fee. For more information

Ajax-Pickering Dolphins
exit in the semifinals
Submitted photo
AJAX -- Darius Brown of the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins
atom team tried to break through the tackle of a
Niagara defender during semifinal action.
PICKERINGPICKERINGADVERTISING FEATURE The Silver Broom has been operating
in Durham Region for over 20 years and in that
time, owner Wendy Williams has seen how the
family dynamics have changed. Most families
now have both parents working, children involved
in lots of activities and some even have elderly
relatives living with them. With life taking up so
much time, it’s easy for house cleaning to fall to
the bottom of the priority list, or have it fall off the
list completely.
Wendy and her team of bonded and
insured cleaners offer cleaning services that are
tailored to the needs of their clients.
“Each family is unique and so are their
needs,” says Wendy. “Whether we need to
spend more time cleaning tiny fingerprints off of
the furniture or the family dog’s nose impressions
from the windows, we take the time to make sure
that our clients’ needs are being met every time
we visit.”
The women who work with Wendy have
been with her for years, establishing a high
level of trust with her and their clients. All of the
women are local, which means they are familiar
with your neighbourhood and are not hindered
by traffic or weather conditions.
The same women will clean your home
every time. This allows them to get to know your
home and your expectations. It also allows them
to develop a relationship with any household
pets, especially dogs, who are notoriously wary
of the vacuum. The women are very meticulous
and conscientious in the cleaning they do and
take great pride in their work. As a result,
they have many happy long time clients and
have received referrals from them. Clients who
refer them resulting in a new regular client will
receive a $20 discount as a thank you token of
appreciation.
The Silver Broom is privately owned and
run out of Wendy’s home, which means that her
overhead costs are far less than her corporate
competitors, allowing her to offer her clients a
better price.
“I want to remain a small business,” says
Wendy. “It allows me to develop and maintain
long term relationships with my clients. I like that
I am on a first name basis with them and that they
feel comfortable calling me with any issues they
may have.”
The Silver Broom offers weekly, bi-weekly,
monthly and occasional cleanings. They are also
available for move-ins and outs and currently work
with several real estate brokerages, providing
cleaning services to prep homes for sale.
Until October 31st, Wendy will waive
the initial $50 cleaning fee for new clients. There
is no contract to sign, and no cancellation fees if
you need to skip cleaning during renovations or
vacations. To book your free quote or for more
information, please call (905) 619-6970.

PICKERING -- The Pickering
Skating Club has had anoth-
er skater join the elite ath-
letes who have obtained gold
status.
Emily Emerson has com-
pleted her gold dances
under Skate Canada Star-
skate testing system. The
Starskate program stands
for Skills, Tests, Achieve-
ment, Recognition. Skaters
have the opportunity to take
Skate Canada tests through a
nationally standardized test-
ing system.
Emerson, 18, began skat-
ing at the age of four and it
quickly became her passion.
She now has her sights set on
coaching. She is at univer-
sity while focusing on com-
pleting her coaching certi-
fication. During her skating
career with the Pickering
Skating Club, she demon-
strated determination and
commitment. She is current-
ly working on an interpretive
program and hopes to try
her gold interpretive some
time this season.
She says her greatest
accomplishment on the ice
was passing all of her gold
dances on the first attempt.
That’s even more impressed
as she changed dance part-
ners from Jon Lane to Troy
Hockley midway through
the gold dance level.
She credits Linda Donnel-
ly, her coach from the time
she was a junior skater all the
way up to senior, as a big part
of her success and love for
the sport. Donnelly has been
an inspiration to her and has
encouraged her to continue
through her coaching certifi-
cation course and has helped
her to develop her coaching
style, Emerson says.
Over the years she has
shown leadership and has
given back to the club by
helping out with the Can-
skate program.

They say there is a reason,
They say that time will heal.
But neither time nor reason,
Will change the way we feel.
For no-one knows the heartache
That lies behind our smiles,
No-one knows how many times
We have broken down and cried.
We want to tell you something
So there won't be any doubt,
You're so wonderful to think of
But so hard to be without.
Love you always and forever,
Mom and Becky

Cyril is continuing to serve, as he was out
during Remembrance Week, selling poppies
at Sunnybrook Hospital where he is a current
residentintheVeteransWing.Duringthesecond
World War, Cyril was in the airforce serving as
a navigator in the Bomber Command in the
426 Squadron based out of Yorkshire, England.
His group was the number 6 Canadian Bomber
group. He navigated a two engine Wellington
plane.
We are lucky to have him in our lives to this
day, as a twist of fate occurred. His squadron
was wiped out while he was recovering in the
hospital from a horseback accident! Though we
know it was a sad fate for his fellow comrades,
we are eternally grateful to have him with us, for
without him, all of our lives would be different!
For far too many the sands in the hourglass ran
Too quickly and too soon
To those of us who remain
We remember still
