Speaking to Regional council on Wednes- day, Chief Mike Ewles said, “I really struggle with the elimination of the long-gun regis- try,” noting police are checking the registry regularly for data. “The data is absolutely critical,” he said. “In my opinion, the long-gun registry should stay. If you want to get rid of it, why abolish the data?” The federal Conservative government has made a commitment to dismantle the regis- try and destroy data that has been collected. “I believe the system works to the benefit of our community,” he added. When asked by Ajax Mayor Steve Parish about the federal government’s omnibus crime bill, dubbed C-10, the chief said, “I’m hearing mixed results.” One of the issues is having enough capac- ity in the prison system for more inmates. C-10 combines several pieces of legislation and includes such items as mandatory mini- mum sentences and tougher penalties for youths who commit crime. “The implications are significant. When- ever you increase the penalty, you’ll see people challeng- ing (their charges). They’re not as eager to plead. You’ll certainly see people go to court,” Chief Ewles said. More people going to court will mean higher prosecution costs and higher policing costs, as police officers would have to be in court if there’s a trial, the chief noted. Every year, the chief presents an annual update on police activity. Last year saw a drop of seven per cent in violent crimes in Durham and a 12-per cent decrease in property crimes, he noted. So far this year, there’s been a further drop of 10 per cent in property crimes and six per cent in “crimes against the person.” Crimes where there has been an increase include mischief (up 11 per cent), indecent acts (12 per cent) and driving while disquali- fied (17.5 per cent). Chief Ewles noted one of the challeng- es facing the force is the re-emergence of motorcycle gangs, specifically the Hells Angels. “They’re back and active.” The gang has a new clubhouse in Claring- ton, near where the new Durham police sta- tion to service Clarington will be built. “In these economic times, these guys will take every opportunity to exploit people. They’ve started to re-emerge as a force to be reckoned with,” Chief Ewles said. There are about 300 people “actively trad- ing child porn in Durham Region and we’re picking them off,” he noted. “I believe this is a very good news update,” Chief Ewles said. “Your service has done an excellent job of keeping our communi- ty safe. I’m proud to say the citizens of Dur- ham receive excellent service at a reasonable cost.” Mayor Parish noted that while crime sta- tistics are down, “people have somehow lost the ability to drive safely.” Some people “drive on their neighbour- hood street like it’s the 401,” Mayor Parish added. Durham Police have a dedicated unit to deal with traffic issues, such as speeding, Chief Ewles said, adding all platoons play a role in dealing with speeders. “We leave ourselves no time. Our days are filled. It’s time to slow down,” Chief Ewles said. “Don’t eat breakfast while driving. Don’t put your makeup on while driving. “There’s something about the GTA. It’s OK to be two minutes late. Slow down and plan accordingly.” rEGion Crime down in Durham, police chief says Mike ewles DentalCareforAdults,KidsandGreatBigBabies. • AFull Range of Dental Treatments - Bring the whole family. • Saturday & Evening Appointments - To serve you better. • Flexible Payment Options - Helping you get the treatment you want. • A Relaxing Atmosphere - Virtual vision glasses, stereo headphones to help ensure you have a pleasant visit. AJAX -- A man who was excessively bun- dled up on a mild day attracted the atten- tion of a cop on patrol Tuesday in Ajax, leading to a high-risk arrest and weapons charges. The incident began about 4 p.m. when the officer, a member of the Durham Region anti-violence intervention strat- egy team, spotted the individual walking along Old Harwood Avenue near View Street. Curious about the man’s bulky clothes on a warm day -- the suspect wore a winter coat with a large hood and a bala- clava concealing his face -- the officer investigated further and saw he was carry- ing a large knife. The officer initiated a high-risk appre- hension of the man, seizing a knife with a six-inch blade and a large rock. Guard clipped while performing crossing duties on busy Major Oaks Road MOya DillOn mdillon@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Still sore from a bruised hip and thigh resulting from being grazed by a car, crossing guard Nadine Vangelisti got right back to work at her busy Major Oaks intersection. Ms. Vangelisti was on duty at the inter- section of Major Oaks Road and Duberry Drive one October afternoon during the busy end-of-school rush when she was grazed by car turning right from Major Oaks onto Duberry. Although she was not seriously injured, the crossing guard did suffer severe bruising. “There wasn’t much they could do at the doctor’s office,” she said of the experience. “I was standing beside the curb and the car just clipped me. All of a sudden I was spinning around and then I was on the ground and by the time I got up they were gone. And that wasn’t the first time.” Ms. Vangelisti hopes that her experience will lend credence to recent arguments from local residents that more pedestrian crossings are needed along both Major Oaks and Dellbrook Road, which act as major arteries running from Valley Farm Road to Brock Road. “I take a risk every time I step out there with my sign,” Ms. Vangelisti said, noting cars have been clocked at up to 80 km/h in the 40 km/h zone. “I just want to keep everybody safe; this is dangerous. I want to make my voice heard and make sure everyone understands that something needs to be done.” Ms. Vangelisti calls the intersection she has been patrolling for the last five years “the busiest crossing in Pickering,” and said she’d like to see a four-way stop put in to improve safety. “It’s scary, and most people understand the dangers on this street but kids don’t, they’re in their own world,” she said of the crossing. “It’s very busy here all the time and (there are) a lot of speeders. Ideally, I’d like to see the traffic brought under control and get these speeders caught so me and the chil- dren can be safe. We need to get everyone co-operating on this.” Ms. Vangelisti expressed her concerns to the Road Watch Committee, of which she is a member, and said the group is trying to organize efforts to bring a speed board to the area to conduct speed patrols. Several other residents in the area of Major Oaks and nearby Dellbrook Road also approached council in October regarding the dangerous pedestrian situa- tion. A staff review, with a report detailing possible solutions, is expected in Decem- ber. “We are going to have staff out there doing a review, observing and, if we have time, maybe doing traffic counts,” said Richard Holborn, head of engineering ser- vices for the City of Pickering. “The idea is to look at locations for pro- viding safe pedestrian crossings because of the amount of pedestrians in the area and also the amenities they’re crossing to, such as parks and schools.” Mr. Holborn said those locations will depend on a number of factors, including the dynamics of the road itself. “We’ll also be looking at the geometrics of the road,” he explained. “There are a lot of curves and hills on those roads that can cause vertical and horizontal alignment issues. If we’re installing a crossing such as a stop sign we need to make sure drivers can see that in time to stop safely.” Once recommendations are sent to council, bylaws would have to be passed and further community consultation regarding any possible changes may be undertaken. safety Crossing guard recounts run-in with car in Pickering MetROlanD file phOtO PICKERING -- Crossing guard guided students across the street recently at the inter- section of Major Oaks Road and Pepperwood Gate. Taxes Durham needs to cut instead of spend To the editor: Re: ‘Durham looking at 2.35-per cent tax increase’ Pickering News Advertiser, Oct. 28 The arrogance, the arrogance, always the arrogance. And, I quote, “Pickering Councillor Bill Mclean said going below two per cent would mean, something has to be cut”. Coun. McLean, your arrogance is clearly visible in this statement. I can’t believe that with all of the unem- ployment and cutbacks that are going on all around you that you would ever make such a statement. What in God’s name where you thinking? What do you think we are doing? Cutting back. What is the private sector doing? Cutting back. Are you just not getting it? We are all cutting back in the private sec- tor. Now it is the public sector’s turn to feel our pain and start cutting back. George Olson Pickering Feedback Seventeen days for mail to arrive from Pickering To the editor: Re: ‘Several Bowmanville residents expe- rience mail stoppage without notice’ news, durhamregion.com, Oct. 20, 2011. I live in a Bowmanville subdivision and take delivery of my mail at a box on the corner of our street. I recently had to phone the company that provides cheques for my bank regard- ing an order for new cheques placed at the end of September. Using the confirmation number I had been given at that time, an automated sys- tem informed me my cheques had been shipped on Oct. 3. I eventually spoke with a service rep at this company and was informed the cheques had indeed been sent by Canada Post on Oct. 3 but I shouldn’t worry as she had received “many calls” recently regard- ing non-receipt of orders and that Canada Post was insisting the delay was caused by the holiday Monday of Thanksgiving. She suggested I wait another week, until Oct. 26, and then call again if they still hadn’t arrived. Fortunately my cheques arrived but I was appalled to see that they were shipped from Pickering. How is it possible that a piece of ‘letter- mail’ in a plain white business envelope takes 17 days to travel from Pickering to Bowmanville? How can a one-day holiday on Oct. 10 justify such a delay in service? Canada Post has some explaining to do. Carol Purdy Bowmanville conFlicT Pickering Santa parade so close to Remembrance Day unacceptable To the editor: I wanted to express my view to Pickering City Council and the media to the fact that the Pickering Santa Claus parade is being held just one day after Remembrance Day. I find this completely unacceptable. The parade should at least be held one week later so as that the full tra- dition of Nov. 11 can be honoured. In past years, the City has gradually brought the parade forward too far ahead of Christmas. I have written to the Pickering council members expressing my concern. It’s a task Rick Hansen undertook 25 years ago in his Man in Motion tour, and today the memory continues to inspire hope and excitement in all Canadians. Durham Region has been alive with excitement as the 25th anniversary relay rolled through this week, passing first through Clarington and raising awareness with each kilome- tre on the trek west. The relay rolls through Ajax tomorrow with local resident Rachel Ding as medal-bearer, and then Pickering, after a visit to Whitby where Mr. Hansen will be given a glimpse of the nearly com- pleted Abilities Centre. Mr. Hansen lost the use of his legs in an accident. Through role models, he found inspira- tion and hope for the future, leading him to take on the challenge of helping to make the world a more inclusive place. He has spoken in the past about the times he felt like quitting while on his mission, but kept at it and came back to Canada sur- rounded by supporters, a reflection of the struggle and ongoing journey spinal injury sufferers face on a daily basis. Scientists have yet to find a cure for spi- nal cord injuries and there are still barriers for people with disabilities, certainly, but this anniversary tour serves to remind us of the advancements that have been made, of the experimental therapies that are being tested, and of the abiding optimism that exists. The anniversary run features 7,000 par- ticipants from across Canada who set out to retrace part of Mr. Hansen’s journey. Those selected to participate work to pro- mote accessibility and improve the lives of others. Here at home, local medal bearers have earned the privilege to represent a portion of the run, a powerful example of com- mitment and camaraderie in the cause. Clarington residents Marshall Hohmann, Lynda Shewchuck, Don Welsh and Mark Hendrikx (posthumously represented by David Hendrikx) were among the first Dur- ham residents to welcome the relay as it worked its way west this week. When the relay is finished, participants will have covered the 12,000 kilometres completed in the original Man in Motion tour segment in Canada in a truly nation- wide team effort. More than $250 million has been raised to accelerate progress towards a cure for spinal cord injuries, and to promote a more accessible and inclusive world. Let Mr. Hansen’s relay be a reminder to every- one. Regardless of the challenge, where there is a will, there is a way. DURHAMCOLLEGE.CA/OPENHOUSE | 905.721.3000 New tool can derive data from Facebook, Twitter KrisTeN Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- UOIT researchers can now use Facebook and Twitter for more than just look- ing at photos and keeping in touch. The University of Ontario Institute of Tech- nology and United States-based Resolution Research and Marketing Inc. recently signed a memorandum of understanding that will give the university access to cutting-edge data analysis. The school’s Digital Life Research Cen- tre will use the company’s new Relevance Media software platform. The unique tool will support all types of research projects that will focus on data hidden in everything from social media to legal documents. UOIT president and vice-chancellor Tim McTiernan said this coincides with UOIT’s mandate to do research that has value, and to create opportunities to partner with com- panies locally and beyond. “This partner- ship captures all of what we’re about,” he said before signing the MOU at Bordessa Hall. The software enables quick, integrative analysis of multiple, disparate data sets, and connects data that was previously impossible to combine for discovery. This will provide the school with more affordable research analysis and data collec- tion, provide students with access to the soft- ware, and opportunities to engage in new and relevant research projects. Lead researcher Teresa Pierce, assistant professor in communication, said that in the past, researchers had to sift through lengthy documents to find the information they required. “It was very extremely time con- suming,” she said. Dr. Pierce was just visiting her daughter, who works at Resolution Research, when she mentioned a current research project she’s working on to one of the employees. He then created a specific algorithm and came up with ads, articles, comments and more relating to her topic. “It came up with more data than I could have ever found myself,” she said. So the idea took off from there. “It just hap- pened over a cup of coffee,” she said. Resolution Research staff are thrilled that the company is partnering with UOIT to spring its software into action. President Nina Nichols explained that in today’s abundant data world, the focus has shifted from data collection to observational research like listening, and now to the antici- pation of future behaviours. Relevance Media provides strategic foresight and predictive trends and analyses, she explained. “We hope our relationship is long, prosper- ous and I think it’s going to be really ground- breaking with our new technology,” she said. Other areas the software can pull data from are: marketing analysis, Internet content such as customer product reviews and competitor information, legal documents, government and corporate filings, and voice of custom- er data such as call-centre records, service requests, blogs and customer satisfaction surveys. Of the 60 new employees hired, Ms. Morra was able to retain 30 as regular staff once the store opened. “Normally I’d be putting out the ad, contacting everyone myself and scheduling interviews,” Ms. Morra said. “This definitely made my life easier, we would definitely use it again.” International Aquatic Servic- es, which has several retail out- lets in Durham, has had so much success working with the Sum- mer Job Service that it consis- tently hires students year after year throughout their university careers. “All in all it’s great because stu- dents get summer work experi- ence and because we’re high- ly seasonal as a pool company we’re able to accommodate sum- mer job seekers,” said Jenn Pitre, HR manager for the pool and spa company. “We’ve found excel- lent students through the pro- gram and it gives us the freedom to do as much hiring through the YMCA as we need to, and that makes our busy season much easier on me.” Employers interested in get- ting involved with the YMCA’s employment programs can call its Pickering centre at 905-427- 7670 or the Whitby centre at 905- 668-0044. Don’t believe me? Check out the event calendars on www.durhamtourism.ca and www.durhamregion.com. You’ll find live sports, art exhibitions, theatre, festivals, wagon rides, concerts, heritage tours, wine tastings-and everything in between. Tonight, for example, you could enjoy a guided walking tour of Rouge Park in Pickering, experience live theatre at the Her- ongate Barn Theatre in Pickering, watch a documentary at the Regent Theatre in Oshawa, check out the Discovering Hope art show at Ontario Shores in Whitby, or try out some local cuisine at one of Durham Region’s fine restaurants. Also happening in Oshawa tonight is First Fridays at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery. First Fridays is an event that takes place on the first Friday of every month (no, that’s not a coincidence) at the RMG. It’s free to attend, and each month the gallery opens its doors to feature a live musical performance, as well as interactive art experiences for the community to enjoy. Tonight’s First Fridays is certain to be full of excitement, as the evening takes on a hip- hop theme. H.E.R. (Hip hop in its Essence and Realness), a hip hop culture club at Dur- ham College and UOIT, will present award- winning dance troupe The Geek Freaks, in addition to a performance by Najjah Calibur, interactive graffiti art projects, and a live DJ. Durham Tourism will have a booth set up at tonight’s First Fridays, so stop by, say hello, and check out some of the great tour- ism resources we have available. We’ll also be promoting our upcoming Durham Tour- ism Summit and Durham Art of Transition Creative Awards, taking place at the Durham College/UOIT campus on Nov. 25. The Sir John A. Macdonald Public School student was chosen as the win- ner of the City’s annual Chief For a Day contest through a random draw. This is the eighth year Pickering Fire Services has hosted the contest, which aims to increase awareness of fire safety and pre- vention. The winner gets to spend a day as “chief,” which involves touring fire ser- vices facilities and meeting firefighters. “It’s really a good addition to our pro- gram for fire safety,” said Chief Bill Doug- las, while sharing lunch with his replace- ment at McDonald’s on Nov. 2. “It’s big with the kids and the biggest thing is that the kids bring the message of fire safety back to their family and friends. Plus it’s an easy day for me, I joked that I should have gone golfing.” Heather kicked off her day with a swearing-in ceremony at City Hall, where she met Mayor Dave Ryan, before head- ing to Fire Hall 5 to tour the Fire Servic- es administration offices. She then got to try out some equipment, including the fire hose and thermal imaging cam- eras, at Fire Hall 6. From there it was off to McDonald’s for lunch before firefight- ers dropped Heather back at her school in the fire truck. “It’s been good,” said Heather, not- ing that her favourite part of the day was meeting the mayor. “I entered because I thought it would be super fun. I learned a lot and got to do stuff like control Sparky the Fire Dog, I made him go in circles. I also learned how to make an escape plan, I’m going to show my sister how.” Heather’s mother Cathy Mantziaris said she was having a great time sharing the day with her daughter, and even learning a few things herself. “It’s been fabulous, there’s so much they’ve done with her and shown her,” she said. “We were shocked and thrilled when she won and everything today has been just fantastic. It’s actually been very informative for me as well.” Stephen Fowlds, fire prevention officer for Pickering Fire Services, said he hopes Heather shares her experiences with oth- ers. “We just hope her experience encour- ages her friends, family and the general public to practise fire safety, use smoke alarms in their homes and have an escape plan,” he explained. “We also hope it shows more of what the fire department does. Yes, we go to emer- gencies and we help people, but we’re also helping people to not have fires in the first place through prevention.” CoMMunity Pickering student takes over fire department jason liebregts / MetrolanD PICKERING -- Pickering firefighter Chad Redshaw showed Fire Chief for a Day Heather Mantziaris the siren switch Nov. 2 at Pickering Fire Hall Number 5. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 4, 201114 AP Look for our flyer in today’s paper! Visit www.artoftransition.ca for more information. www.falkenberg.ca DURHAM -- Pickering sculptor Edward Falkenberg has been chosen to design the Durham Art of Transition Creative Awards statue. at the galleries Karen Bigelow exhibiting in Ajax first solo show for whitby artist Mike ruta mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Artist Karen Bigelow sold her 30th piece of art when she was just 15. And while she was proud as punch, her mother wasn’t as enthusiastic. The Whitby resident notes that growing up on a farm in the Pembroke area, she got high marks in school and her mother wanted her to train for a high-pay- ing job such as a doctor. “It broke my heart, it really did,” Bigelow says. “It never stopped me drawing and painting and creating, but what I did was I had to go out and get a career.” She became a health information professional, much in demand in North America for developing computer systems for hospitals and, as a troubleshooter, for her ability to think outside of the box and solve difficult problems quick- ly. Art was put on a back-burner. In 1999 she scaled back from her career and, soon after her moth- er died, her father, more support- ive of his daughter’s artistic tal- ents, asked her to do his portrait. It was that year, 2005, when Big- elow decided to re-dedicate herself to art. The first time she showed a work in a gallery was in 2008 at Whitby’s Station Gallery and it was a confidence booster. “That said to me, you can do this,” she says. Bigelow is holding her first solo show, Come Walk With Me, exhib- iting 46 works at Cultural Expres- sions Art Gallery in Ajax starting Nov. 9. Many of the works she’s show- ing are acrylic landscapes and she’s been told her work is a com- bination of the Group of Seven and Emily Carr. Her profound attrac- tion to wild places is something she got from her father, a logger who would take her into the bush with him. “This is my love,” she says. “If it was summertime, I would load my canoe and my cooler and head off into the north. I would be gone. The love of wilderness has always been in me.” Also a writer, Bigelow composed a poem, Come Walk With Me, which both describes her passion for wild places and encourages the reader to join her, even for a little bit, on her artistic journeys into the wild through her work. She has combined her love for landscapes and the outdoors with a medium not normally associ- ated with landscape painting, sil- ver point, to create unique works she calls “landscapes in motion.” Bigelow explains that it’s literally drawing with silver wire and there’s no room for error as once a line is drawn it’s there forever. An ancient medium first used by scribes to write and then generally employed in portraiture and still lifes (Rem- brandt drew in silver), she came to it by accident. “It was love at first sight,” she says. “This amazing energy coursed through me.” One of her silver point works, Rushing Waters, received honour- able mention in the PineRidge Arts Council’s Juried Art exhibition, running to Nov. 27 at the McLean Community Centre in Ajax. Bigelow explains that when first put on a page, silver looks like black-and-white pencil. But the artist has to look into the future to consider that the silver tarnishes to create a patina. She’ll work in lay- ers in the medium, leaving time to allow oxidization to take place. Some works take several months to complete. “It’s almost like living art,” she says. The exhibition can be seen Nov. 9 to 11 and 16 to 18 from noon to 7 p.m. and Nov. 12, 13, 19 and 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. Meet Bigelow Nov. 9 from noon to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and during the Nov. 20 exhibi- tion hours. Cultural Expressions is at 62 Old Kingston Rd. in Ajax. Jason liebregts / Metroland WHITBY -- Whitby artist Karen Bigelow is showing her work in an exhibition titled Come Walk With Me. The Ontario Philharmonic music director says it’s his job to present variety to the audience in terms of the pieces selected for perfor- mance. But he often hears requests for a certain program. “Every year I have people coming to me asking, ‘when are we going to have Last Night of the Proms?’,” says the Ajax resident. The answer is Nov. 18 and 19, when British pride will be on dis- play at the Regent Theatre in Oshawa. Parisotto explains the concert is a big tradition in the UK, started more than a century ago and held at Royal Albert Hall in London. And it’s not really a classical music audience that fills the seats, as the event features the audience “sing- ing like at a rock concert” patriot- ic pieces such as Land of Hope of Glory. He says it’s a program the OP has done before, but not for a long time. For the Proms concerts, Parisotto is vacating his usual spot conduct- ing the OP and watching from the audience: South Korean guest con- ductor Rin-Jong Yang is taking the helm. “We’re really glad to have him here,” Parisotto says. “He’s done so many things around the world.” He notes that the conductor, also a violinist, has a Canadian connec- tion as he was once a visiting pro- fessor of violin at the University of British Columbia. Parisotto says a Proms concert tradition is to have a special guest. In addition to Yang, there’s a musi- cal guest named Beethoven as the OP is performing the composer’s 5th Symphony, which Parisotto notes is the most popular piece of classical music on the planet. For the December concert, special doesn’t go far enough to describe who’s coming to Oshawa. Michael Burgess has become a friend of the OP, and while you know Burgess from his signature role in Les Miserables and in other Broadway musicals, he is by no means out of place performing in Handel’s Messiah. “He has serious training as an opera singer,” Parisotto says. “He started as an opera singer; actual- ly at the beginning of his career he was singing opera but some Broad- way opportunities came up.” Burgess became so much in demand for Broadway roles that his classical career took something of a back seat. But Parisotto says Burgess is extremely pleased to be back in Oshawa singing the tenor part in Messiah. Also performing the classic is guest Inga Filippova- Williams. “I heard her last year and I was just absolutely in awe of her voice, really beautiful and powerful and emotional,” Parisotto says. Rounding out the Messiah line- up are Christina Stelmacovic, Andrew Tees and The Toronto Chamber Choir, whose director, Mark Vuorinen, will feel right at home as he’s from Oshawa. Tickets are available at www. ontariophil.ca, by calling 905-579- 6711, and at the Regent on perfor- mance nights, starting one hour before the performance starts and through the intermission. ROCK N’ AHARD PLACE ANEWHITCOMEDY! NOVEMBERSPECIAL $8.00 OFF with coupon PER COUPLE in November at the galleries Port Perry prominent in Ajax juried show ian Bodnaryk, Jennifer ross top Pineridge arts Council list Mike ruta mruta@durhamregion.com AJAX -- It’s fair to say Ian Bod- naryk’s Turning Point will always be a special work to the Orono artist. The acrylic painting took the Best in Show Award at the Pin- eRidge Arts Council’s 13th Annual Juried Art Exhibition. The opening reception was held Oct. 28 at the McLean Commu- nity Centre in Ajax. Bodnaryk chose the title care- fully and there’s definitely a per- sonal connection. The artist, who says he’s been drawing ever since he could hold a pencil, found himself in a bit of a rut a year ago. But when he switched genres, from landscapes to por- traits and still lifes, something clicked. Turning Point is a prod- uct of the change in direction that had Bodnaryk determined to paint whatever he wanted to, no regrets. “It was kind of inspired by a big change in my life,” he says. “It was a turning point in my life and I found whenever I looked at this piece it really rep- resented a big turning point in someone’s life.” The vertical painting shows a view of a man, his head resting on his clasped hands. But only the face from the mouth down is visible. It seems the person is at a crossroads, pondering some- thing momentous. Bodnaryk, who was raised in Port Perry and has lived in Bowmanville and Oshawa, says he has submitted to the PRAC juried show before but had never been accepted into the exhibition. Among the other honourees are: Port Perry artist Jennifer Ross, whose dry pastel, Bird’s Eye View, won the Ontario Power Generation Award; Pickering painter Robert Hinves, the Rus- sell David Johnson Award winner for his pen, ink and watercolour, Duffin’s Creek II; John Krasinski of Oshawa, the Veridian Corpo- ration Award recipient for his silver print, Limestone Waves, Bruce National Park; and, Linda Baker Cole of Oshawa, the May- or’s Award winner for her water- colour, Down by the Schoolyard II. PineRidge Arts Council presi- dent Cathy Schnippering noted that there were 207 applications for the show and 63 pieces were chosen. The PRAC awarded $4,300 to this year's winning artists. Ian Bodnaryk Brad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com durhamregion.com facebook.com/sportsdurhamregion twitter.com/scnewsdurhamSports durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 4, 201118 AP Pickering resident scores pair of trys in rugby sevens final Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com BRITISH COLUMBIA -- Being able to execute a two-point con- vert was the difference in John Moonlight being able to be part of a gold medal-winning Cana- dian sevens rugby team at the Pan American Games held in Mexico. Canada was able to turn the trick, while Argentina wasn’t, which ultimately made the dif- ference in the tournament. It started in the semifinal, where a late try and convert against the United States gave Canada a 21-19 win and berth in the gold medal game. With Canada holding a lead late into the championship game, Argen- tina scored a try at the whistle, but failed to make the convert, allowing Canada to claim gold with a 26-24 victory. Moonlight, of Pickering, had a pair of trys in the final against Argentina. “It was unbelievable,” he said of the experience. “I’ve been to the Commonwealth Games the year before and it was good, but there were a lot more rela- tionships with other teams this time.” With some down time between games, Moonlight, 24, was able to visit some of the other ven- ues, including field hockey and women’s soccer. Canada recorded opening day victories over Brazil 45-0, Chile 35-7 and USA 29-21 during their march to the medal podium. Moonlight is hoping this recent victory will get Canada back into the world sevens series of rugby. “It makes quite a difference because we got dropped from the core teams of the world seven series. We got dropped two years ago and we’ve been fighting to get back,” he said. Both the United States and Argentina are core members of the 12-team series. Moonlight, who lives and trains in British Columbia, said the Canadian squad would like to get back playing against the best in the world as they build toward the debut of rugby sev- ens at the Olympic Games in 2016. Next for Moonlight is a trip to Dubai and South Africa in a cou- ple of weeks, followed by some down time at home in Pickering over the Christmas holidays. You can follow his progress on twitter at @jmoonlight12. Gold medal for Moonlight in rugby sevens Pan american Games Silver, bronze for Beckberger in the pool ajax resident looking ahead to 2012 Olympics Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Jennifer Beckberger got to enjoy the experience of win- ning Pan American Games med- als from a couple of different perspectives. The first came in the 4x100m freestyle relay in which the Canadian team won bronze. Beckberger, having already completed her leg of the race, was leaning over the deck and screaming encouragement as her teammate brought home the third-place finish. The second medal, a silver in the 4x100m medley relay, pre- sented a different set of cir- cumstances. Beckberger had to stand on the deck, watching as her teammates completed the first three legs of the race before getting on the block and jump- ing into the pool to swim the anchor leg of freestyle. “It was a lot more nerve-rack- ing,” said the Ajax resident of having Canada’s medal hopes resting with her swim. “Seeing it come down to us and Brazil, going off the blocks right with them, I think I was a few tenths behind. I had to stay calm, keep my breathing on and get to that wall before they did. “I knew the Brazilian girl that was swimming was the girl who won bronze in the 100m free, so I knew she was going to be there and be a factor in the back half of the race.” The favoured U.S. team won the gold. The Canadian team may have been the sentimental favourites with the crowd, paying tribute to the Mexican culture by wear- ing colourful wrestling masks on to the deck before the race. The gesture earned them celebrity status. “I was a little hesitant because I had just finished the 50m free- style,” said the Arizona State graduate. “I was a little hesitant to have something over my face. “Once we got in the ready room and relaxed, the officials want- ed to take pictures with us and everyone was telling us what a great thing we were doing. It got me excited and pumped to wear it out.” Beckberger, 25, looked back on the experience in Mexico with a mixed bag of emotions. Of course the medals she returned home with made everything worthwhile, and she set a per- sonal best in the 100m freestyle, but she was disappointed with her result in the 50m freestyle. All in all it was an extremely busy time for the Whitby Dol- phins club member, competing in six events all told. Her final results included 4x100m free- style relay (bronze), 200m free- style (8th), 4x200m freestyle relay (5th), 100m freestyle (5th), 50m freestyle (8th) and 4x100m medley relay (silver). She will be continuing her training through the winter in preparation for the Olympic tri- als next year, where she hopes to earn a spot on the Canadian team that will compete at the Olympic Games in London. ryan Pfeiffer / metrOland AJAX -- Ajax resident Jennifer Beckberger won a silver medal in the 4x100m medley relay and a bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 4, 201119 AP JOIN NOW Pickering Old-Timers Hockey League Non-profit, 3x20 minute period games.
